everyone’s talking about... AWARD-WINNING MUSIC ACTS COME TO SURREY

Three Surrey-based Festivals have announced a raft of top musical talent coming to Surrey next Summer. Hampton Court Palace Festival, has just revealed Paloma Faith, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Sheryl Crow, Deacon Blue, Sam Ryder and The Rest is History podcast, as the first acts on a stellar programme for their 2024 summer festival. Once again, the iconic Tudor Palace will open its gates, welcoming festival goers to enjoy the stunning East Front Gardens 'after-hours' before the nightly concerts begin in the spine-tinglingly intimate setting of Base Court. Next up, Pub in The Park Reigate, have secured 90’s boy band McFly, former Spice Girl Melanie C, Gabrielle and Scouting For Girls to headline their Reigate Festival next July. And Jockey Club Live have signed up the superstar DJ Pete Tong (MBE) for one of their Sandown Park Racecourse Live events next Summer. More details to be announced shortly.

I’M A CELEBRITY GET ME OUT OF HERE MAKES HEADLINES Whilst most eyes have been firmly fixed on the Ofcom backlash mainly directed at Nigel Farage and the premature exiting of Britney Spears “weepy” younger sibling Jamie Lynn and ‘Masterchef’ star Grace Dent on medical grounds. Surrey Rocks can exclusively reveal their own inside scoop, which is bound to get tongues wagging, even more. Our 'insider' source has privately revealed to us, that none other than Yoko Ono is being secretly flown in to advise with the next set of Bush Tucker Trials! Apparently, as our unnamed ‘informant’ tells us, ITV bosses believe she is the perfect person to come in, as she has been blatantly been living off nothing but a ‘Dead Beatle’ for nearly forty-three years now! Sorry we couldn’t resist.

SURREY FASHION WEEK 2024

The Crown’s come under fresh fire by a former friend of the late loved-up couple, who has labelled episodes of Netflix’s new smash-hit series as a ‘travesty of the truth’. Michael Cole, head of PR for Dodi Fayed’s father, former Harrods’ honcho and magnate Mohamed Al Fayed, said The Crown is ‘a travesty’ and the new series gets ‘so much wrong’, fumes the former Harrods spokesperson and friend of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed. The sensational show’s come under fresh fire from former BBC Royal Correspondent Michael who claims he’s one of the only people still alive who knew all three people who were killed in the infamous car crash, slamming the show for "cruel" and "malicious" scenes watched worldwide. He firstly insists Dodi Fayed was not 'pushed' into a relationship with the Princess by his father, as perceived in the current series, which makes out Mohamed ‘engineered’ their romance, with Michael telling The Sun, “It was quite the reverse,” and the ill-fated pair were happy and very much in love. "Dodi adored Diana. It’s injurious, it's nasty, it's untrue. And Diana was happy with Dodi. I'm quite sure that she was sincere about the relationship." A main point of contention is the delineation of Diana's snapped kiss with Dodi on a yacht, which was front-page news across the world, with the plotline making out it was set up by Mohamed in the Harrods owner's quest for British citizenship. "When the photograph came out, I was with Dodi and Mohamed and they were devastated, because up until then, we'd kept it under wraps," Michael discloses. “Far from conspiring to bring about this photograph, Mohamed then actually sued the agent who sold it.” In another ‘false’ portrayal, Michael blasts scenes showing Mohamed badgering his son to move things along faster with The Princess, revealing how he actually told his son to take things slower, "literally the opposite of The Crown.” In the hit series, Princess Diana and Dodi's night in Paris is portrayed as almost an inconvenient stopover on the way home, specifically so Dodi could propose to her at his ‘puppet master’ father's request. However, Michael claims that “was utterly untrue,” too. “It's ridiculous.” He reveals the pair took secret incognito trips together abroad away from the cameras, and alleges they opted to travel to Paris together on a separate occasion before that fateful 1997 night. "Diana and Dodi had gone to Paris on a quiet weekend that nobody knew about before they holidayed on the boat. And until that photograph was published, nobody knew. Dodi wanted to protect her.”

Surrey Fashion Week's festive celebrity charity catwalk show, has sadly been pushed back due to an unforeseen issue with the venue. But our sparkling SFW events will be back with a bang in 2024, with an exciting update re. SFW24 celeb workshops & runway shows (in aid of 'planet saviours' Think Ocean and Carshalton High Street) from SFW co-founder - our celebrity journalist Angela Sara West and her colleagues at STK International, who will feature all future SFW events on their various TV channels - coming in our Jan issue. RECIPE CHRISTMAS DINNER PARCELS Christmas dinner in minutes! A great alternative to a full Christmas turkey dinner to be had anytime in December as a prelude to the main event! Wrap turkey breast, sausage meat and cranberry sauce in streaky bacon to make an all-in-one main course that's guaranteed to impress your dinner guests. (From the BBC Good Food Guide.) INGREDIENTS • 450g turkey breast steaks • Drizzle of vegetable oil, plus extra for greasing 1 onion chopped • 24 rashers smoked streaky bacon • 2 tbsp fresh breadcrumbs • 400g pack sausages (we used pork & leek) meat squeezed from the skins • 8 sage leaves, chopped, plus a few small leaves to serve • 250g cranberry sauce METHOD 1. Heat a drizzle of oil in a frying pan, and use a little more to grease a 900g loaf tin. Put the onion in the pan

and cook gently for 10-15 mins until caramelised. Tip into a large bowl and set aside to cool. Line the loaf tin with a double strip of foil, leaving plenty overhanging either end (you can use this as a handle to remove the parcel once cooked). 2. Stretch each piece of bacon a little with the back of your knife. Arrange the rashers so the base of the tin is covered with overlapping bacon and the rashers come neatly up the sides in a single layer, overhanging generously. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs on top of the bacon. 3. Once the onion has cooled, add the sausage meat and sage to the bowl. Mix everything together, then pack half

the mixture into the tin. Spread over about a third of the cranberry sauce. 4. Cut each turkey breast steak into three strips. Layer roughly half the turkey on top of the stuffing mix, filling any gaps like a jigsaw, but keeping the turkey in one thick layer, then season. Spread over a little more cranberry sauce, then top with the remaining stuffing, cranberry sauce and turkey in the same way, making sure there are no gaps between the layers. The parcel should be full to the top when you’re finished. Fold over the overhanging bacon and wrap the tin in foil. 5. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4. Put the tin on a baking tray and cook for 1 hr 30 mins. Remove the tin from the oven and leave to cool for 10 mins. Carefully lift the parcel out of the tin, using the foil handles. Roll the parcel over onto a baking tray. Return to the oven for a further 15-20 mins until the outside is crisp and browning. Test the internal temperature with a thermometer, if you have one – it should read 75C when it’s ready. Or insert a metal skewer into the centre of the parcel and check it is piping hot. Cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for at least 15 mins before serving. Top with the reserved sage leaves, then slice.

WINE MATCH We all like a bit of bubbly at Christmas! Champagne or sparkling wine pairs remarkably well with festive dishes from turkey to cranberry sauce to stuffing. Brut is the driest of sparkling wine classifications with no perceptible sweetness. Rosé-style sparkling wines are slightly sweeter and also good choices. However, our top sparkling wine pick would be a dry sparkling Shiraz or on the upper end of the scale a Laurent Perrier Rose will do the trick nicely. If you want to stick with wine you could go for a Cabernet Franc, a Chardonnay with low or no oak or a dry Riesling. Beaujolais Grand Cru, Beaujolais Nouveau, Merlot, Pinot Noir or a fruity Zinfandel are also excellent choices that will bring out the turkey and cranberry flavours nicely.

WONKA

MORE THE MERRIER – THE EXTENDED EDITION – SARAH REEVES

THE TREMENDOUS TREES

This December 15th will see Willy Wonka hit the big screen…..again! At the forefront of this new movie is the budding, young actor Timothee Chalamet, who embodies the young Wonka with panache. Having starred in blockbusters such as sci-fi smash ‘Dune’ and emotional debut ‘Beautiful Boy’ with Steve Carell - his portrayal of Willy Wonka is surely Oscar worthy. Hollywood is taking note! While Gene Wilder was humorous in the original 1971 film ‘Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory’, Johnny Depp was eerie in ‘Charlie & The Chocolate Factory’ in 2005, Chalamet is completely endearing whilst spellbinding in this latest role as the plain and simple ‘Wonka’. Finally, a Wonka we like! What can only be described as “a delightful journey into the whimsical world of the Willy Wonka” the supporting cast; including Olivia Colman, Jim Carter and Rowan Atkinson, are on point too. Stealing the show on the supporting cast front, however, is Brit actress Sally Hawkins from ‘Bridget Jones’ fame, portraying Wonka’s mother, adding an emotional performance that really tugs at the heartstrings. Rather annoyingly the bed-ridden Grandpa (that was over praised in previous Wonka outings) never gave the stalwart maternal figure of Charlie’s mother - that supported a family of 5 - any kudos or credit, until now. The striking costumes and amazing set designs bring to life the essence of Wonka’s crazy yet cool imagination in this flick. Paul King, known for his work on the ‘Paddington’ films, executes his latest directorial debut ‘Wonka’ beautifully and like Timothee Chalamet is already hitting the Oscar 2024 nomination “rumour” list. Wait and see who picks up in March.

This fantastic Christmas-inspired extended album from Nashvillebased pop artist Sarah Reeves will see you through the festive season and beyond with plenty of Christmas cheer - and a big band to boot – for 2023’s revival. ‘More the Merrier’ is a deluxe edition of Sarah Reeves original 2022 yuletide effort which includes 4 new songs for the Christmas period including the 2023 radio single ‘Holly Jolly Christmas,’ ‘Winter Wonderland’ and ‘Last Christmas’ among others. Hot on the heels of her new studio album ‘Best Days’ Sarah Reeves is now an Instagram sensation with 131m followers and is also one of the most viewed Nashville-based singer/songwriters. She has a staggering 174 million global streams of her songs. Get the album in time for Christmas and get in on the festive spirit with one of the most soulful and melodic voices around. Sarah Reeves opens up about ‘More The Merrier’ being her favourite project so far: “I am extremely excited to have the Deluxe version of ‘More the Merrier’ out this Christmas season. This project is my favourite thing I’ve made in my career. The atmosphere in the studio was magical as we had all live jazz musicians play on this album. I hope it brings you all the warm and cosy feelings this year.”

The 7th instalment in Surrey author Pia Talbot’s Survival Super Squad series is called ‘The Tremendous Trees - A Very Hedgerow Christmas.’ The story centres on Chadwick, a poor church mouse, who uses the hedgerows to find his way to the big city to write his letter to Santa Claus. Little Chadwick’s journey is fraught with danger…. will he get there by Christmas Eve, and what will he ask Santa to bring him? Tina Talbot, has now written 7 children's books with the aim of engaging children in nature. Accepting that our advance in technology is as human as our dependency on nature, Tina, is striving to create a balance between the two. She believes that nature has been as integral a part of our evolution as the innovative accomplishments of our ancestors. She hopes that children will fall in love with the characters in her books as much as they love their technology, inspiring a lifelong harmony and reverence of nature that will ensure the survival of our planet. This is a perfect Christmas present for kids aged 5-8. Illustrations are provided by the wonderful Judit Matthews. Tina is based in Epsom, Surrey and all her books are read by her at local Surrey libraries. Order direct from Tina at www. survivalsupersquad.co.uk with next working day postage. STACEY JACKSON – SUPER WOMAN! Stacey Jackson is an award-winning singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, TV presenter, author and mother of four. She became an inspiration for stay-at-home mums when she shot to fame, having launched her music career at the age 40! Following the chart success of her debut single, Stacey has gone on to release four albums and over a dozen singles, recorded a track ‘Live It Up’ with legendary rapper Snoop Dogg. Now in her fifties, Stacey is back with a new album ‘Super Woman’, book and tour. We caught up with the London-based songstress to find out more.

FEATURES Q: We are so excited about the new album release. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind ‘Super Woman’? SJ: All songs have an eighties vibe – relating back to my time in an authentic eighties girl band in my teens. The messaging is to inspire people to live their best life and follow their dreams. You don’t know till you give it a go! The album is very dance led and I’m working with some of the best DJ’s around the world to have certain tracks remixed for the club scene. Can’t wait to tell you who! All my albums are very dance led – mirroring who I am as a person. Very fun and high energy…they are loved by the dance world, gay community and are also great to work out to. Q: What’s your favourite track on the album? SJ: That’s a tough one. The acoustic version of ‘Soldier’ is beautiful and the song has so much meaning for me. I wrote it originally about a gay friend of mine who was facing a tough time “coming out.” It’s an emotionally liberating anthem (the original version of ‘Soldier’ made it to the Top 20 in the World Indie Music Charts and peaked at #7 in the Music Week Pop Chart) but for 2023 we’ve stripped it right back but given it new rich acoustics. The black and white accompanying music video gives a great insight into the recording studio process with stunning behind the scenes footage. The result is a really intimate and emotionally resonant experience, that I am very proud of. The title song to the album ‘Super Woman’ is also incredible and one of my personal favourites. Q: Can you tell us about your soon to be released book? SJ: The book is part autobiographical, part fiction. It’s about a woman trying to make it in the music industry, so it does really come from the heart. I had to run it by my kids first as there were so many

mentions of life with them in it. They all had their comments but were mostly all OK with it! It’s a very inspiring and fun book that I hope will be well received. Q: And we hear you have an upcoming album and book tour? SJ: Yes it all kicks off in March next year till October 2024, I will be playing key dates in London, Brighton, Gay Pride as well as UK and US Festivals. I can’t wait – although I may have to go on beta blockers to help with my anxiety!! As the saying goes if you want something done, ask the busiest person you know! I do thrive on being busy! "I want to be rocking when I’m 80!" Stacey Jackson

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28

35

FEATURES Q: What was it like recording with the legendary Snoop Dogg? SJ: Being with Snoop was an experience in itself, it was really great that he agreed to rap on my track 'Live It Up' he believed in what I was doing and he got to know what I was about. He got the whole, “OK, it’s time to leave the PTA mum thing… you’ve been there, done that …now it’s time for you to live your dream!” We really bonded as have kids the same age and he’s a real family guy. We still stay in touch. Q: How do you juggle being a mum to 4 kids with your illustrious music career? SJ: Well it takes a village! Luckily my mum flies over to

help with the kids when I need her and my husband is wonderful and supportive. There is also a 12-year age gap between my oldest and youngest kids, so the older ones help out and muck in when they can. I can’t believe my eldest is 28! Q: They must be so proud of your achievements? SJ: Yes they are. I think it’s especially good for my youngest and only girl for her to see her mother live her dreams. Q: Fitness also plays a huge part in your life, can you tell our readers more? SJ: Yeah, I just love the gym and I really find solace in doing aerobics. It’s habitual for me just like brushing my teeth. I also launched my own patented workout top called ‘Staefit’ a few years ago which sold really well on home shopping channels. I created it to tackle issues women may have while working out finding the right support as it has a built-in-bra. It’s something I may revive in the future but right now I’m concentrating on the new album and book.

36 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28

FEATURES

Q: And you’ve also had a top TV career, being a presenter on your own show? SJ: I wrote and recorded 54 episodes of ‘Stacey Jackson in the 80’s’ which was a music TV series on Sky TV. I loved it – it was the pinnacle of my career. I have since been approached to appear on reality TV series ‘The Real Housewives’ but that’s not something I would really consider doing as I don’t want to talk about my family and it’s all about the really personal stuff on those TV shows. Q: And how do you like living in London? SJ: I just love it although I am travelling a lot so I have to 1 week to 2 weeks per month where I am not in the UK. I always love coming back to my Chelsea home though! When my family and I first moved to London 25 years ago we wanted to start supporting a football team and became season ticket holders for Chelsea, so we are all mad Chelsea fans. We even named our malti-poo (maltese crossed with a poodle) Frank Lampard. When the real Chelsea player Frank lived in London he had one the same that we’d always see out on walks! Our maltipoo Frankie as we call him features in this cover shoot, and is the most adorable dog, hope he likes his new claim to fame! IT’S A NUMBERS GAME An ideal dinner party suits 8-12 people comfortably. Any more than 12 and you have seating dilemmas and people shouting over each other. Plus, you’ll more than likely have to get in caterers. You can be more flexible with a cocktail party, as that can work well with anything from 20 to 80 people. This is probably the best and most plausible option as you can manage the planning, décor, canapés and music mostly on your own. the big guns!! This could be too difficult to organise on your own and would be impossible without additional caterers, waiter staff and or bartenders. If you decide to throw a party without outside help, here’s how to do it from start to finish with ease.

DELECTABLE DÉCOR Simplicity is key to getting the décor right at a party. So, try to stick to one colour theme and follow

throughout. Try purple tree decorations, flowers, table runners and napkins blended with gold or silver, to make a tasteful yet Christmassy look. Simple Christmas bauble decorations hanging from the ceiling can give a great look with minimal effort Alternatively, a Winter Wonderland theme of white is a great festive look – just be careful when serving red wine, as spills will certainly ruin your décor. Stick to one or two focal points in your house, such as the fireplace and Christmas tree. Then get soft lighting

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28

FEATURES and uplighting on your focal points. Any more and you’ll look cluttered. Illuminate your front drive or pathway to your front door with garden torch candles. This is a simple yet classy touch that makes any home look inviting. Garden torch candles are also very inexpensive and can be reused for a number of occasions. These can be found at any home depot store. Clear, clear and clear again. Your house should look like your house but we all collect a lot of junk over the years, which you could do without showing off. Try hiding away any ornaments or possessions you normally have lying around, in the rooms you’re going to be entertaining in.

TOP TIPPLES Champagne is always a good option to serve as guests arrive to get people in the party spirit. If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, prosecco is a great alternative, which tastes delicious and can be spruced up with a raspberry garnish in each glass. Or for extra colour and a sweeter taste add a dash of Crème de Cassis to make a Kir Royale. Mulled wine is a great winter warmer to serve your guests as they come through the door. A delicious and easy recipe involves adding:

garnish – as this looks perfectly like a sprig of pine from a Christmas tree! Most official party planners recommend allocating four glasses of wine or equivalent to the average guest drinking and then throw in a few extra bottles. Personally, I would double that quantity, there’s nothing worse than running out of drinks at a party.

CATERING 750ml red wine, 150g caster sugar, 1/2 cup orange juice, peel of one lemon, peel of one orange, 1 star anise, 1 cinnamon stick, 5 cloves, 1 tsp fresh nutmeg and a pinch of ginger. Boil in a large saucepan and serve in glass cups. (Serves 10 so multiply accordingly.) Create your own party cocktail depending on your colour theme then decorate with something appropriate. For example, if you love a Cosmopolitan, make that your main drink and add candy canes to the glasses. If you prefer Mojitos, add caster sugar that’s been dyed with red food colouring to the rim, then decorate with a sprig of faux holly leaves and berries. The joy of cocktails is that many of them can be made up before guests arrive and laid out on a drinks table, so you can enjoy the party without rushing around. Another great Christmassy drink to serve is a light and refreshing Winter Sun Cocktail. It contains clementine, lemon, and vodka with a citrus sugar rim and the herbal piney scent of a rosemary

You don’t have to be Delia Smith to throw a few bits together at home to make delicious party finger food. Aim for variety (meat, vegetarian, hot, cold, spicy, and sweet). Estimate six canapes per person, but remember that it's better to have too much food than not enough. Opt for shortcuts such as ready-roll puff pastry topped with goat’s cheese, sundried tomato paste and basil, they will taste far better than any ready-made or frozen canapés available from the supermarket. Other great and easy options are smoked salmon blinis made with cream cheese and garnished with a sprig of dill, pigs in blankets - it is Christmas – and they taste even better with a sweet chilli dip. Mini mince pies dusted with icing sugar are also a great and inexpensive option.

THE WORLD’S SMALLEST CHRISTMAS DINNER These simple yet delicious bite-sized Christmas dinners will hopefully wow your guests in a big way. INGREDIENTS: (Makes 20 canapés) 500 grams of potatoes 1 packet of apple and chestnut stuffing 6/8 slices of roast turkey 20 small sage leaves 20 individual semi-dried cranberries 400g of mini brussel sprouts 1 pack of braised red cabbage 1 packet of cocktail sticks

METHOD: 1.Thickly slice the potatoes and then cut with a rounded cutter. Fry the cut-out potato shapes in a little oil until golden. 2. Use the smallest circular cutter available and fill with stuffing to form a small disc - then dry fry in a pan until golden and crisp on the outside. 3. Drop the sage leaves into some hot oil and fry for 3-5 seconds - then leave on some kitchen towel to drain.

4. Cook the sprouts and red cabbage. 5. To assemble the canapés, first place the potato disc on the base of a tray, then the stuffing, top with some hot red cabbage, a small slice of turkey and a sage leaf then place a brussel sprout and some cranberry on a cocktail stick and secure all ingredients in place. Another main tip is to always keep the canapés small, if they are more than a mouthful then accidents will happen as guests attempt to juggle drinks and food. And keep plenty of napkins nearby for greasy fingers and spillages. Also make sure you pre-prepare the food and bring it outdoors as soon as possible so that hungry guests don’t hang around while you’re stuck in the kitchen.

HIRING CATERERS This can save you a significant amount of time and effort. It can be relatively inexpensive per head depending on the level of catering required. This may sound expensive, but if you consider how much you actually spend on food, including all the little extras, and how much time you spend preparing and cleaning up, then it can be a great alternative. This also means you get time to enjoy the party rather than rushing around, making sure that everyone is happy and full. A popular choice of food for a party in the winter months is spit-roast cooked meat with salads.

TO THEME OR NOT TO THEME! Theme parties could be borderline tacky… but, hey, they can also inject some much-needed fun and spirit into an evening! And generally, when people are in a fancy garb or disguise, they tend to relax and let their hair down more! If you’re thinking of doing a themed event make it one that’s easily accessible to all. It would probably not be a great idea to hold a workout-themed party when you know your elderly in-laws will be there. One theme that’s easy for everyone is horrible Xmas Jumpers. A 60s or 80s theme always gets people making an effort and can be the greatest fun. If you

want to go big and glam, how about opting for a Masquerade, Great Gatsby or Marie Antoinette Ball? That’s one way of really making your event stand out. You can’t beat a classic black and gold, red or white themed party either.

MAKING THE RIGHT NOISES The entertainment on the night can be one of the most talked about aspects of the whole event and is something that can really bring people together. Depending on the size of your party it’s always good to hire a DJ for ease and to really get the party rocking.

That way you can have the lighting, decks (if necessary) and great sound system all brought in for you. For smaller scale parties, how about making an iTunes playlist with your favourite songs? Intersperse with Christmas songs to lighten the mood if you prefer a more dance-led playlist. For larger events you may well want to hire a singer or band.

HOMETIME Most cocktail or larger parties usually have a finishing time on the invite. On average, cocktail parties are

48 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28

three or four hours long, so don’t be afraid to write a wrap-up time of midnight on your invites. Some people actually prefer you being specific so they can book taxis and babysitters. Music – to wind down a party just turn the volume down 20 minutes prior to the finishing time and switch off at finishing time. Alternatively, if you don’t want the party to end – ignore these party planning rules and carry on! It’s your event. Just remember if you are thinking of doing this then pre-warn your neighbours you are having a party. Or better still invite them so they can’t complain about noise levels!

SLADE EXCLUSIVE To celebrate 50 Years of 'Cum On Feel The Noize' & 'Merry Christmas Everybody' British glam rock band Slade are embarking on a UK Tour coming to the Royal Holloway Students Union in Egham on Friday 8th December. Surrey Rocks were lucky enough to catch up with guitarist and founding member Dave Hill on all things Slade, Touring, Christmas and lifting people’s spirits!

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28

FEATURES ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING TOUR? Very much so! We have been doing Christmas tours for a very long time now – 50 years to be exact! The fifty year Anniversary of 'Merry Christmas Everybody' & 'Cum On Feel The Noize' is a milestone! It’s about all our songs – it’s very special to a lot of people – especially me! We are looking forward to visiting to Newcastle, Egham and of course visiting the black country, home of all this music with its working class roots and rock band heritage. (Dave and the band still live in Wolverhampton!) WHAT IS THE BEST & WORST THING ABOUT TOURING? The best thing is our audiences and being on stage with all the fans having a great time. Playing the 1 hr and a quarter of solid Slade hits – what’s not to like! The worst is the late nights, delays, traffic and Brexit was actually a real bummer! I also really miss the wife and kids when I’m on the road too. I’m a family man at heart. ‘MERRY XMAS EVERYBODY’ REGULARLY TOPS ALL TIME GREATEST XMAS SONG LIST. WHAT WERE YOUR RECOLLECTIONS OF COMING UP WITH IT? We recorded it in New York in July 1973 in 100 degree heat. It was quite amazing – we stole John Lennon’s harmony and his studio time (as he wasn’t able to use the studio). Our country was on a big low at the time in 1973 – we didn’t know it was going to be a monster track. A total original – the public took to it like a duck to water. It definitely lifted British people and everyone’s spirit. WHATS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG TO PERFORM AND WHY? ‘Come Feel The Noize’ speaks volumes with what the bands about. People come to hear a racket when they come and see us. We really are a bunch of guys from Council houses making a lot of noise! YOU WENT FROM A ROCK BAND TO SKINHEAD BAND BEFORE GOING BACK TO ROCK AGAIN – HOW DID YOU MAKE ALL THESE TRANSITIONS?! It was a really funny story actually. We met manager Chas Chandler in a pub in London, he was not producing for Hendrix at the time which meant he had a gap in his schedule. We were definitely in the right place at the right time! We were there busily doing gigs and Chas liked us so we were told to pop down to Rasputin in Bond Street and we got him involved. There was a skinhead movement at the time and they didn’t have a band to represent the movement. So Chas got us all down the hairdressers and we did it. Tried to look a bit hard you know!! That only lasted 12 months then we gave up on it and grew our hair back! SO MANY BANDS STRUGGLE TO ‘MAKE IT’ – WHO WAS INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR SUCCESS? Management was definitely the key to our success, Chas was highly influential having been the ‘Animals’ bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager.

76 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28

READING FESTIVAL IN 1980 CHANGED YOUR LIFE? We were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, we literally stole the show, kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, we signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem "We'll Bring The House Down", which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! A blade of grass blows in the wind! We can’t be stiff need to move and our resurgance in the 1980’s was definitely down to doing that show.

JONATHAN ROWL

At Jonathan Rowlandson Design we have provided a unique design and build service for a range of clients for over 20 years. With an emphasis on innovative, contemporary design solutions we have risen to the challenge of every project, interior or exterior. Combining our unique approach to metal items with wood, glass, stone, and other materials. At JRD we offer a range of furniture items including the Otolo range. We also design and produce items sympathetic to their environment, be it a rustic bar restaurant with an artisan feel – normally providing seating, counters, bars, lighting, signage, etc. such as Dog Star Brixton – or one-off sculptural items such as the tables for Vivienne Westwood. Our inspiration will often come from the clients’ desires, as well as tapping into nature and art to find a suitable solution. Hardly any 2 projects are the same, we continue to provide new and hopefully better designs.

THE SEVEN STARS PUB

The Seven Stars Pub in Ripley has undergone a huge interior and exterior makeover and opened its doors to the public on November 28th. The popular pub has been taken over by The Running Mare in Cobham owners, Adrian & Ollie, who have spent the last 2 months renovating the manor building, dating back to 1536, to get it back to its former glory. The Seven Stars has long been one of the landmark bars in Ripley. The new owners are really excited to turn The Seven Stars into a destination for all ages and tastes and make it a vibrant social hub for the Ripley community and beyond. Whilst Adrian comes from a hospitality background – he has run a number of successful pubs and bars before the Seven Stars – he spent a large part of his life supporting and travelling with his younger brother, the racing driver Julian Bailey (aka The Stig!), on the route to Formula One. RESTAURANT REVIEW

OUR EXPERIENCE We arrived at Kinghams on a Wednesday evening and were pleasantly greeted by the owner and front of house manager Jack, who incidentally was celebrating his 39th birthday (Happy Birthday Jack!) We were shown to our table in the restaurant which was full to the brim – a good sign on a midweek night in November. Luckily, we had pre-booked well in advance, as Kinghams have waiting lists of over 2 weeks at times. Our lovely waitress Lisa was attentive and fun making the general ambience thoroughly enjoyable. The menu choice was wide and varied but not overbearing – with four choices in each course; To Begin (starter), The In-Between (second starter/mini main), To Follow (main course) and To Finish (dessert) we were indeed spoilt!

TO START We opted for the 4 Course Menu Option, starting with the In-Between Courses of ‘Hand Dived Scallops with Parsnip and Curry Butter’ which was sublime, presented beautifully in scallop shells

and the equally impressive ‘Venison Ravioli with Braised Seasonal Vegetables and Marsala Broth.’ The locally farmed venison was extremely tender, the freshly made pasta cooked perfectly and the broth sauce was delicious giving a rich favour and kick to the winter warming dish. Next up was the amuse-bouche of fish soup, served as an appetiser before the main. It was delightful, and contained a mussel and a piece of prime sole in a cute coffee cup with a frothy top. A very nice touch, Kinghams!

MAIN COURSES For mains there was so much to choose from, including delights such as the ‘Glazed Octopus with Romesco and House Harissa’ (pictured here) it was hard to decide on just one! We went for the enticing ‘Duo of Partridge, Applewood Smoked Breast and Leg with Poached Pear, Jerusalem Artichokes, Walnut Ketchup and Chestnut Jus’ on the advice of Jack, the owner. It was an amazing dish, presented beautifully and the flavours of the game were perfectly offset the sweetness of the pear and crunch of the walnuts.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28 105

RESTAURANT REVIEW Our second taster, comedian and TV personality Bobby Davro, went for ‘Pan Fried Sea Bass with Heritage Carrot, Blood Orange Puree and Confit Fennel.’ The sharp flavours of the blood orange and fennel were a winning match with the succulent and generous portion size of the Sea Bass. The Heritage Carrots were also cooked perfectly al dente.

TO DRINK Kinghams has some great partnership deals with local distillers - including the infamous Silent Pool and Albury Vineyards. (Look out for a new trout main dish on the Festive Menu incorporating their gin!) Unsure on what to have as a predinner drink we went for the Special Recommendation of ‘Kinghams 30th Anniversary’ Wessex Gin and Fever Tree Tonic - with a Juniper nose and a hint of cinnamon and citrus – it was so light and refreshing and got the meal off to a great start. To accompany our Mains we went for a glass of the 2022 Italian Seraffa Gavi di Gavi and a glass of the 2021 Domaine Colonge Fleurie. Both were excellent suggestions from Kinghams in-house Sommelier. The Wine List at Kinghams is extensive and includes some of the finest wines and vintages.

DESSERT Although feeling a bit on the full side, there was no way we were turning down desserts! Following our refreshing palette cleanser of ‘Kiwi and Bubbles Sorbet’ from Albury Vineyards, we went for the Kinghams classic of ‘Apple Tart Tatin’ served with calvados caramel, roasted apple puree and crème fraiche sorbet – it was simply divine,

the sweetness of the caramel perfectly offset the sharpness of the roasted apple in the Tatin. This looked too good to eat, presented beautifully with a whipped chocolate topping, but we managed it! Hats off to Jack, Mo and the team for a fabulous menu and the ultimate dining experience.

Kinghams has been delighting guests for over 30 years and we can certainly see why this gem of a Restaurant has stood the test of time. Kinghams was easily one of our tasters best ever Restaurant Reviews. The quality of the food, service, décor, surroundings and overall ambience made for a perfect dining experience. We have also heard wonderful things about their Sunday Lunches (prebooking is essential) and have already secured our sought after reservation to try out next month! We cannot recommend Kinghams highly enough.

RIA ELAINA ATKINS A MUM’S LIFE

LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF – I’M RIA, MUM OF TWO, MARRIED TO MY HANDSOME HUBBY. I’M BORN AND BRED IN MY BELOVED SURREY AND SPEND MOST OF MY TIME BETWEEN HERE AND LONDON. ith the festivities kicking off in full swing this year, it's no wonder that people want to go all out when it comes to decorations. I think it's a wonderful way to express your creativity and makes for such a lovely atmosphere. While traditionalists believe that Christmas trees should go up 12 days before Christmas, we love to enjoy the festivities for a little longer and so our tree is up by mid-November. The wonderful Fabienne Egger and her team help me style it by sourcing some wonderful decorations. I also have a collection of my own decorations from over the years which gives my tree some history and meaning. This year we opted for traditional red, green and gold. We chose a crimson red which is the universal symbol of love

FUN and almost identical to the infamous jewellers - Cartier. What could be more luxurious than a Cartier inspired Christmas tree?! London hotels are fabulous for those festive celebrations. My favourite being The Savoy and Claridge’s. This year Francis Bourgeois officially unveiled 'coming home for Christmas' at The Savoy. Stationed in the front hall, the Savoy steam train is the star of the show for a quintessentially London Christmas. Guests can indulge in a glass of Laurent Perrier rosé and

enjoy the nostalgic ambience of the decorations. I shall certainly be paying a visit with the kids this Christmas I think they are going to love the train! The iconic Claridge’s Christmas tree has everyone in suspense. Each year they collaborate with a leading creative from a fashion house to create a unique tree. This year Louis Vuitton have created a tree within two large open wardrobe trunks towering on top of each other. Each trunk is adorned with Claridge’s travel stickers and an oversized LV luggage tag. The tree itself is composed of 15 chic chrome trunks to create a silhouette of a Christmas tree and an ode to transporting one's most personal and precious items. The most magical place for families at this time of year has to be Lapland UK. If you haven't been then, where have you been?! Unless like us you missed out on getting tickets back in March...major faux par! So, this year we have

decided to go to the REAL Lapland in Finland. It has been on our bucket list for some time and we realised it was actually the perfect time to go before baby number 3 comes along. There are many package holidays that you can opt for which organise everything for you from the moment you step foot on the plane. After extensive research I decided to book everything separately. As the children are still young I felt as though the packages were too jam packed with activities and we wanted to do things at our own pace. Whilst Rovaniemi in Finland is known to be the main 'Father Christmas village' I got the impression that it was very much a production line, and dare I say it, a little tacky. From extensive reviews I've read and speaking to friends, people have said it's very commercialised, full of queues and souvenir shops and you don't actually get to spend very much time with Santa. We will be staying in a town called Levi. Levi is best known for its winter ski slopes and is only a 20-minute drive

112 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28

from Kittila airport. We will be going on husky rides, reindeer rides and of course going to visit the main man himself. In Levi, visiting Santa is less commercialised and located in a beautiful remote location in a wood by a frozen lake. There are little huts scattered around for gingerbread making and activities with the elves. You also have at least a 10-minute private meeting with Santa. Stay tuned on my Instagram where I will be documenting everything. Ice-skating is also a must to get into the Christmas Spirit. A winter tradition of mine is to go ice skating at Beaverbrook. This year, it will be returning up to the 30th January 2024. It's an enchanting ice rink with stunning views of the Surrey Hills. Adults can sip on a glass of champagne whilst they also offer sweet treats for children. Please note that you cannot skate only and have to book it as part of a skate and dine package. This ensures that it is never overcrowded and makes for a really special exerience. After visiting Battersea power station in the Summer, I was so impressed. There are over 140 shops, bars and restaurants to choose from. Not to mention a handy car park so you can drive straight there. London's only riverside ice rink, Glide at Battersea power station, is open until 7th January 2024. This is not one to be missed. Enjoy unrivalled views of the Thames as you skate around on three interconnecting rinks under the iconic chimneys. It's the perfect spot for shopping, dining and festive fun. Whatever you wish for this Christmas, the best gift of all, is love.

SID DA BARBER

s December’s chill settles over Surrey, our hair stands witness to the changing seasons. This month in the spirit of festive grooming we embark on a journey through the world of barbershops, exploring the art of giving, the secrets of winter hair care and the resolutions that groom us for the year ahead. As frost adorns the Surrey landscape our hair requires a winter wardrobe of its own! So let’s have a dive into our winter haircare tips for the ultimate guide to keeping those strands resilient against the cold.

HYDRATION IS KEY

Winter air tends to be dry, and indoor heating further strips the moisture from your hair. Keep your hair hydrated by using a nourishing conditioner regularly or a daily leave in conditioner.

MINDFUL SHAMPOOING

Avoid over washing your hair as frequent shampooing can strip away the natural oils leaving your scalp and hair dry. Opt to washing your hair every few days and avoid using shower gel in your hair as these have high levels of sulphate, further drying your hair and scalp.

LEWIS SIDNEY GUMBRELL AKA SID DA BARBER IS AN ESTEEMED BARBER, EDUCATOR, AWARDWINNING FINALIST AND PROUD AMBASSADOR FOR TOP BRANDS SUCH AS THE BLUEBEARDS REVENGE, KIEPE PROFESSIONAL AND RUDE CAPES. E GROOMING HAT HAIR PREVENTION

While hats are essential for warmth, they can often lead to hat hair. To combat flattened or static prone strands, use a lightweight styling product or hairspray before you put your hat on so you can maintain your style throughout the day. Avoid wearing a hat if your hair is still wet as this creates a place for bacteria to grow.

TRIM AWAY THOSE DRY ENDS

Regular haircuts help keep the hair healthy and able to grow at a quicker rate, make sure you are having your hair cut every four to eight weeks.

COLD WATER RINSE

As tempting as a hot shower may be in the winter, it can contribute to dryness. Finish your shower by running your head under cold water to lock in moisture and close the cuticles of your hair. This also calms frizz and keeps your hair looking healthy and shiny.

SILK PILLOWCASE

Swap your regular pillowcase for a silk one. Unlike cotton silk causes less friction, prevents breakage and minimises frizz. This is a game changer for keeping hair healthy and top condition.

HAIR RESOLUTIONS

Tis the season for self-reflection and personal growth, and our grooming resolutions go beyond the standard promises. Join us in setting intentions for a year of impeccable style, health and confidence. Here is a small list of ideas for your New Year's resolutions. • • • • • •

Experiment with a new haircut Upgrade your grooming products (check out our list) Commit to regular haircuts Set up a daily skincare routine Take time off for self-care days Stay hydrated and eat well

As we bid farewell to 2023, let's take a stroll down the barber's chair and reflect on the iconic hair trends that shaped this stylish year. in 2023, proving that simplicity can be the ultimate sophistication. Barbers crafted clean, close-cropped styles that exuded confidence and showcased the timeless appeal of a well-executed buzz. From military-inspired crew cuts to more textured variations, the buzz cut dominated the scene, offering a versatile canvas for self-expression. In a surprising turn of events, the modern mullet made a triumphant comeback. Coming from its '80s roots, the contemporary mullet embraced a more refined aesthetic. Barbers skillfully blended shorter sides with a longer, tapered back, creating a style that seamlessly blended business sophistication with an edgy flair. It became the go-to choice for those seeking a bold, unconventional look that still retained a touch of classic charm. 2023 witnessed the revival of the centre-parted haircut, a style that effortlessly struck a balance between polished and casual. From soft waves to sleek locks, barbers crafted centre-parted looks that suited various hair types and lengths. Celebrating the beauty of natural hair texture, the grown-out look gained momentum in 2023. Keeping the hair longer and less well kept - this haircut is here to stay. As we bid farewell to the trends that defined 2023, the anticipation builds for what the next year holds in the realm of men's grooming. IT’S CHRISTMAS I BE KIND & COSY

Sadie Pizzey Sadie Pizzey Interiors is a full-service design firm based in Guildford. Sadie designs with practical knowledge gained from extensive renovation experience. Her exceptional organisation and project management skills mean she keeps projects running to time and budget, developing innovative schemes and beautiful spaces to inspire clients. Sadie’s philosophy is: “We need our homes to be our battery chargers, to help us re-build and recover from everything that life throws at us. Designing spaces that embrace this, will dramatically improve our quality of life”. www.sadiepizzeyinteriors.com 124 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28

I don’t know about you, but this December I’m feeling a bit wrung out! It is always an exhausting time of year, but after everything we’ve been through and witnessed this year, I would really like to curl up in a ball and have a good sleep! And to be honest why shouldn’t we? We put so much pressure on us to have and make the perfect Christmas! We can still create a great Christmas whilst carving out time for ourselves to recuperate and finally relax! Our homes are so important for rest and rejuvenation. What we surround ourselves with, how we present our spaces and the materials we add to our homes, can have such a strong emotive response in us. By the time I finish work in December I want my home to be a sanctuary, I want it to look, feel and smell amazing, giving me the chance to unwind and gather momentum for lots of exciting projects next year.

HOME & INTERIORS

IN SURREY, SO LET’S SNUGGLE! KEEP IT SIMPLE WITH INTERIOR CHANGES Now it’s December so chances are you are going to have a tree and I love a Christmas tree, twinkly lights and glittering decorations instantly lights me up inside (excuse the pun)! I actually love the nostalgia of seeing the same decorations come out each year. There is no need to come up with a different design theme and completely change all your decorations, adding a few, new special additions each year is magical enough. But aside from the tree, how else can we add the warmth and tranquil mood to our homes, without decking the whole house out in tinsel. It really comes down to establishing what you want from your home, and the experiences you want from each room in your home over the festive period.

LOUNGING IN OUR SURREY HOMES Now I’m sorry if this makes me sound a bit dull, but actually want I’m really hankering after this year is to snuggle down on the sofa with the girls and

Chris and watch all my favourite Christmas films. I can visualise the whole thing and I know for me; the set-up of the room will hugely impact the success of the cosy experience. I want my sofa to be tactile with velvet cushions and fluffy throws tucking us all in. I want the scent of my favourite White Company Christmas candle to be filling the room with smells of cinnamon, cloves and oranges. I want my Quality Street chocolate arranged in a beautiful, fluted glass jar with bronze lid

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28 125

HOME & INTERIORS and I want all our drinks arranged on an oversized tray on top of our velvet ottoman. Firstly, I’m very sorry if this makes me sound like a Surrey princess, but our time is precious and as the girls get older and older, I get less precious time with them, so I want our experiences to be pure magic. I’m not advising that we quickly nip out and buy a new sofa in time for Christmas, but I’m saying let’s use what we have and make the extra effort to create these heighten experiences in this season. And if you do see a new velvet cushion you fancy, then know that this will bring you so more much joy then a whole new range of Christmas decorations.

KEEP IT QUIET IN OUR SURREY BATHROOMS Sometimes over Christmas we really need to lock that door and just enjoy some alone time. Our bathroom experience has been reduced more and more as we learn more about our environmental impact. There are still moments where we can treat ourselves to our R&R and the bathroom is still the perfect escape space. It’s simple; light candles, dim the lights and I love my bamboo bath tray for holding my kindle and iPad. This quiet time is essential for looking after yourself, but also giving you time to reflect and build for the year ahead.

FESTIVE MAGIC IN THE KITCHEN

OUR SURREY HOMES ARE NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS

The kitchen requires more energy, it’s where we cook our festive delights, connect and laugh around a dining table and have some much-needed fun with friends over our kitchen islands. The material palette for this space should, therefore, reflect the elevated enjoyment we want to feel in this space. We love incredible finishes in our Surrey Interior Design projects and we find that the quirkier material palette we select provides the perfect backdrop for our clients to get the most out of this space. Breakfast bars don’t need to be just a regular stone, add some extra impact with more niche finishes such as stainless steel, quartzite or sintered stone. We designed this breakfast bar in our recent Surrey home with a liquid metal bar, it catches the light and adds a magical element to the space. The same can be said for hidden elements in your kitchen. This hidden bar creates the ultimate party experience when open and then closes away for practical family life. Adding for Christmas in this space can be understated and just work with what you have. If you have brass tones in your Surrey Kitchen, then opt for gold baubles in jars or gold paper pin wheels. I love adding simple botanical elements that can be either bought or foraged for. Simple red roses on a dining table or stems of eucalyptus in a vase is subtle but still impactful. And when you do decide to be social, prearrange your kitchen setup for ease and impact. Prepare food in advance, put drinks in large jars and lots of extra sparkle goes a long way!

The takeaway message is our homes should be designed to work for all year round, for every season, occasion and daily task we throw at it. When we renovate, we often become distracted with what’s in vogue, or what did our neighbours do, but actually what do you want? How do you want to feel in your home and how can we achieve this? When Sadie Pizzey Interiors start working with a client our first stage is our Drill Down Chat, where we delve into everything about you, we learn what’s important to you and how you love to spend your time. We then translate this into creating the ultimate home that represents you, a place that excites, elevates and rejuvenates you.

Although we are predominantly a Surrey Interior Design firm, we do also work across the whole of the UK. If you have a project, you would like to discuss with us then visit: https://sadiepizzeyinteriors.com or email us at: info@sadiepizzeyinteriors.com SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28 127

This non-invasive treatment targets dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines around the eyes for a more vibrant gaze. On the fifth day of Christmas, let's talk about PDO threads and the lift you have been wishing for. These dissolvable threads are a secret weapon for lifting and tightening sagging skin. I call them 'the superheroes of the anti-ageing industry'. Whether it's on your face or body, PDO threads can help you achieve a tighter lifted look without the need for surgery. My signature 'EQ face lift 'is absolute game changer for those wanting a life changing transformation. This is non surgical facelift includes bio stimulation that dramatically reverse ages the skin. These dissolvable sutures are strategically placed beneath the skin to lift sagging areas, such as the cheeks, jowls, and neck. On the sixth day of Christmas, it's time for Botox and the gift of youth. This popular treatment can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving you with a refreshed and rejuvenated look. Say goodbye to forehead lines, crow's feet, and frown lines. I often say Botox is an art practised by many and mastered by few. In addition to the standard areas above, an expert injector should also be able to use this to lift hooded eyes, shape the nose, firm the lower face & neck, improve a downturned smile and produce a lip lift. On the seventh day of Christmas, let's prepare our lips

harmful UV rays is crucial. So, slather on that SPF and keep your skin safe and healthy all year round! On the tenth day of Christmas, consider non-surgical body contouring such as fat dissolving treatments to help you achieve a slimmer silhouette. With the festivities in full swing, it's natural to indulge in delicious treats. However, unwanted fat deposits can sometimes be a concern. Fat dissolving injections can target stubborn pockets of fat, such as double chins or love handles, effectively contouring your body and boosting your confidence.

for mistletoe moments. Christmas is a time for love and romance so let's pamper those lips. Exfoliate your lips gently with a sugar scrub, followed by a nourishing lip balm. For a plumper pout, consider lip fillers to redefine or enhance your natural shape and add volume with a subtle enhancement. After all a beautiful smile is the best accessory during the festive season. On the eighth day of Christmas, let’s talk about Dermal Fillers. As we age, our skin naturally loses elasticity and plumpness, resulting in sagging cheeks, thinning lips, and deepening nasolabial folds. Dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid-based injectables, can effectively restore lost volume and provide a naturallooking lift. We can also enhance cheekbones, chins, define the jawline, shape the nose without surgery and fill out wrinkles. On the ninth day of Christmas let's look at your skincare routine this winter. In addition to aesthetic treatments, a well-rounded skincare routine is essential during the winter months. Hydration is key, so opt for moisturiser's with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides to lock in moisture and protect your skin's barrier. Consider adding antioxidants and vitamin C serums to brighten your complexion and combat free radicals. Lastly let's not forget the importance of sunscreen. Even during the winter months, protecting your skin from

Gemini

Leo

21 MAR – 20 APR

22 MAY – 21 JUNE

24 JULY – 23 AUG

This Christmas will be a time for using your willpower, determination and strength. You have decided to live your life in alignment with your values, and now you are acting on it. Take this as your sign of encouragement; you are doing the right thing. You may feel some delays taking place this month, but don’t let this get you down. Some things just need a little more time than others. Keep yourself occupied in the meantime, and don’t lose hope. Finally, with the year coming to an end, it’s time to move on from the negativity of 2023. Don’t start the New Year with sadness or regret in your heart. Move forward and focus on a fresh start.

Don’t let your high expectations stop you from enjoying the festive season, Gemini. Things go wrong and people can be unhappy, that’s just life. Try not to be too much of a perfectionist in the coming weeks, as it will only cause you disappointment when you should be feeling your happiest. Furthermore, a healthy dose of escapism is exactly what you need to relax and get out of your own head. Watch a movie, read a book, or get lost in your favourite album. Take yourself away from your own life and escape into a different world for a while. Finally, this New Year, make sure to get your truth out into the open. Holding on to secrets won’t help anybody. Express yourself and let your emotions be seen and heard.

With the festive season approaching, now is the time to decorate your home and spend time in an environment you’re comfortable in. You may find yourself wanting to settle down during this period and not make as many wild plans as you’re used to. Relax, stay calm, and enjoy Christmas. Furthermore, sending a message to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while is a brilliant idea. Connections with the right people last forever, so don’t worry if it’s been a while since you have both spoken. Be strong and make the first move. Finally, you have more influence over people than you think. Those around you listen to what you have to say and are genuinely interested in your opinion. Take some time to help someone who may need your wise words as guidance.

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

21 APR – 20 MAY

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

24 AUG – SEPT 3

Hurt from the past is keeping you from enjoying the present. Someone has caused you pain, and it hasn’t been easy to shake off. Remember that you did everything you could to help the situation, but sometimes people just aren’t meant to stay in each other’s lives. On the positive side of this, you now have a freedom like no other! You are able to live your life on your own terms without worrying about what someone else might think. Be yourself and don’t worry about other’s opinions of you. Finally, with Christmas approaching, don’t let wishful thinking cloud your judgement. Stay realistic about what is likely to happen this Christmas time. Have fun and enjoy yourself, but don’t set yourself up for disappointment.

New beginnings and opportunities are making their way towards you this month, especially when it comes to your career. You might be offered a new job, given an unexpected amount of money, or an idea you’ve been thinking about for a while may come to fruition. No matter what it is, there is a sense of abundance going on in your material life. Furthermore, an apprenticeship offer coming your way will be an exciting opportunity to accept. Whether you are deciding to start fresh by learning a new skill, or someone else is offering you their help, don’t hesitate to say yes! Working with others on a shared project is right up your street. Finally, with 2023 ending in only a few weeks, now is the time to manifest what you want next year to bring.

You’re an independent soul Virgo, and now is the time to embrace it! Don’t be afraid to spend time on your own right now. Take yourself on dates and have solo adventures while you have enough time. Furthermore, there may be some competition in your life right now. Whether it be at work, within the family, or in your friend group, trust that you stand out just by being yourself. No one can do what you can, so remember to believe in yourself. Finally, you have a brilliant ability to know what will be needed in the future, and this is especially great with the festive season approaching. You understand what to do to make this time of year amazing for everyone. Utilise this skill by making yourself and everyone around you happy.

Libra

Aquarius

24 SEPT – 23 OCT

23 NOV – 21 DEC

21 JAN – 19 FEB

Are you aligning yourself with your internal values, Libra? Right now, your moral compass in guiding you to do the right thing. If someone in your life is making you feel uncomfortable with their actions, don’t be afraid to stand up for what you believe in. With Christmas nearly here, this month is all about contentment for you. There is no need for drama right now. Everything is where it’s supposed to be, therefore you can allow yourself to relax. Finally, when it comes to New Year’s resolutions, working on your emotional maturity should be top of the list. You are aware of your emotions, which is wonderful, but showcasing them is a whole other story. Think before you speak and understand that other people are going through things too.

Saving money is high up on your priority list right now, Sagittarius. You want your Christmas to be amazing and know that closing your purse is the right thing to do until the time comes to splurge. Use your willpower and stick to your principles. You are also likely to find yourself in a relationship with someone exploring their ability to communicate and share ideas. This relationship won’t always be easy, as tension and conflict may sometimes make it too much to handle. If you need to, give yourself a break from them, then come back with fresh eyes later on. Finally, finding your purpose is a New Year’s resolution you can put all of your effort into! Figuring out what you want your life to look like is important to you and should be explored.

Set clear boundaries for yourself Aquarius. Some people are trying to walk all over you, but this needs to stop now. Let them know where you stand and what you are willing to tolerate. Furthermore, using your femininity right now is your best bet. Whether you are a man or a woman, this is your sign to stay strong and approach situations in your life with a softer touch. The people around you who matter will appreciate being treated with a little bit more love. Finally, developing your skillset is going to get you far this month. You are already great at what you do but remember to carry on learning as much as you can. This is your time to become an expert in your field.

SCORPIO

Capricorn

Pisces

24 OCT – 22 NOV

22 DEC – 20 JAN

20 FEB – 20 MAR

Have you been giving yourself enough self-love, Scorpio? December is all about taking care of yourself and remembering how amazing you actually are! It’s easy to forget this, so throughout the month, make sure to set little self-love reminders. This Christmas will be a magical one for all you Scorpio babies out there. The season is going to be full of abundance and love, giving you major festive vibes. Be grateful for all the incredible people and things you have in your life. Finally, as the New Year approaches, you will see big changes in your life. This is likely to happen towards the end of December and is something to prepare yourself for. Change isn’t a negative thing, and with some adjustments, you will see yourself thriving very soon.

Don’t worry about the judgement of other people, Capricorn. Everyone is always going to have an opinion, but what truly matters is how you see yourself. If you are proud of yourself and everything you have achieved, then why bother listening to anyone else? Furthermore, see this now as your sign of encouragement. Your mind is expanding and getting ready to branch out into new horizons. You are craving stimulation and will soon jump at the next chance to learn something new. Finally, a painful ending has stayed with you for a while now. When something comes to an end, it can hurt and leave you with unanswered questions. However, with a fresh year about to begin, it’s time to let go.

A part of your life has come to a completion, Pisces. You are finishing a significant chapter and are getting ready to start something new. Don’t force yourself to get over this ending if you aren’t ready though, it can take time to begin a new era. However, when you are ready for this fresh start, new opportunities will be coming to you out of nowhere! It’s safe to say this new chapter is going to be a busy one. You are allowed to pick and choose what you want, as you have many options to select from. Finally, make sure you stay organised over the Christmas period. You have a tendency to be a little bit disorganised in your life Pisces, but right now you have to keep to schedule.

WINTER FUN OR SUMMER SUN WHICH WILL YOU CHOOSE?

PAUL MERTON WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT BEING IN DICK WHITTINGTON AT RICHMOND THEATRE? I'm looking forward immensely to appearing in Dick Whittington at Richmond Theatre as Sarah the Cook. Pantomime is a very traditional form of entertainment, and it's not often that I get involved in traditional forms of entertainment, because when I started as a comedian in the 1980s I didn't work with older comedians, it was just a bunch of very young people together. So to be following in the footsteps of many famous comedians who have made playing a pantomime Dame a joy for audiences over the years is something - to be a part of that long line is thrilling for me. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER SARAH THE COOK? My character Sarah the Cook is an incredibly beautiful woman. Very, very, very, very beautiful. Quite, quite stunning. But also she doesn't know it, which makes it very sweet. But she is gorgeous. I mean, you only have to look at the photos. WHAT IS SO MAGICAL ABOUT PLAYING A DAME IN A PANTOMIME AT CHRISTMAS? I think playing the part of a Dame in a pantomime, you're given a certain amount of license to ad lib a little bit - or improvise as it's called these days.

160 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 28

But there are certain scenes where you've got to play the drama of the scene because you can't, you know, you can't muck around with that. You want to make sure the story is hitting where it needs to be dramatic. I'm playing with my wife Suki, we're both used to improvising, so there may be a few odd lines here or there that fly around, but for the rest of the actors, we will give them their cue lines. But they might have to wait half an hour before they hear them.

ARE YOU GOING TO BE WRITING ANY OF YOUR OWN JOKES FOR THE SHOW? There might be a couple! From before

[playing the Dame at New Wimbledon Theatre in 2018], you'd ad lib something on one night and think "that worked". Or you keep it in and the part grows a little bit bigger, but generally speaking, the script is in pretty good condition. So I think we'll look at it and maybe tweak it here and there to suit the two of us, but fundamentally it's in pretty good shape. I think if you saw the pantomime at the beginning of the run and saw it at the end of the run, you would see the differences, because over the course of 60 performances there will be changes. But as I say, those are in the comedy scenes rather than the dramatic scenes, as the dramatic scenes have to be played straight.

Writer, actor, comedian, radio and television presenter Paul Merton will be stepping out from behind the iconic ‘Have I Got News For You’ desk and donning the Panto Dame’s heels at Richmond Theatre this Christmas! He will be joined by comedian Suki Webster as Suki the Sweet Maker, musical theatre performer Wendy Mae Brown as Spirit of the Bells and West End star Vivien Parry as Queen Rat from Saturday December 9th to Sunday January 7th.

HAVE YOU PERFORMED IN RICHMOND BEFORE? I have. I've appeared at Richmond Theatre on several occasions with an improv show that we've done, Paul Merton's Impro Chums, which tours the country every couple of years. So we have been to Richmond before, which is the most magnificent theatre. It's a Frank Matcham Theatre, and it's 125 years old next year - opened in 1899. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT RICHMOND THEATRE? Today is the day that we've first got into costume and makeup and met two other members of the cast, but

standing on stage, looking out into the empty auditorium and just seeing what a beautiful space it is. It gives you a thrill and a real feeling of expectation about appearing here during the Christmas holidays, and that's before the audience comes in. There's something about a really beautifully designed theatre that lifts your spirits as soon as you go in. As soon as you come into somewhere like this, you're already in a good mood before the show starts.

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COME AND SEE DICK WHITTINGTON THIS CHRISTMAS? I think that Dick Whittington is going to be very funny. There's going to be lots of audience participation. There's a really horrible villainess in there who you can boo, and there's great heroes who you can cheer. And in Sarah the Cook, you can have one of the most beautiful women ever to appear on stage. I fancy it itself, to be honest.

H O W T O S T Y L E I T: WA R M M I N I M A L I S M Master the interiors trend that combines clarity and comfort with expert guidance from BoConcept’s interior stylists.

There is a happy medium to be found between minimalist and maximalist and it’s called warm minimalism. Sometimes referred to as ‘relaxed minimalism’, this is a design philosophy that combines the simplicity of minimalism with the inviting warmth of natural elements and cosy textures. It embraces the concept of ‘less is more’ while at the same time creating a space that feels comfortable and welcoming. At its core, warm minimalism focuses on decluttering and removing unnecessary

items, resulting in clean lines and open spaces. However, unlike traditional minimalism, it adds a layer of warmth via the use of earthy tones, natural materials, and organic textures. Warm, neutral colours like beige, caramel, and soft greys are often used as a backdrop, creating a serene and soothing atmosphere. How to master the trend? Drawing on their Danish heritage and leaning towards simple, beautiful and always-functional design, BoConcept’s specialist interior stylists share their tips on how to achieve the look.

a beautiful textured fabric like Lazio and complete the look with a Madrid round table made from a natural material like oak.” The Berne sofa in leather also taps nicely into this trend bringing natural elements and a warm feeling to a space. Then, opting for a curved living room chair like Charlotte in Wellington wool fabric adds both texture and warmth to your space.

Less is more: “The warm minimalist style represents an interior that we will declutter by favouring quality over quantity”, says Claire Lempereur, interior stylist for BoConcept. “We simplify the decor to create a warm atmosphere.” Make the furniture count: Warm minimalism favours clean and simple designs, with an emphasis on natural materials and timeless craftsmanship. “The new Bolzano collection is the perfect example thanks to its light, minimalist design and cocooning effect”, says BoConcept stylist Jennifer Palbras. The organic curves add softness to the silhouette. “The Bergamo sofa perfectly encapsulates the relaxed minimalism approach”, says Lempereur. “Especially when you opt for

Embrace materials like wood, stone, and incorporate indoor plants. These elements add warmth, character, and a refreshing touch of nature to the space. Total Real-AXE-ation for all the Family When you are looking around for things to do with the kids at Christmas, after you’ve exhausted the usual list of suggestions Go karting, Laser quest, Winter Wonderland, Paintball, Cinema, Pantomime and you still can’t get them away from their X-box or Play stations’…well perhaps now I may have another idea that just might. ‘Axe Throwing’ may not be the first thing that comes to mind when planning a family day out but then again, when has there ever been a venue that’s local and well run, that has advertised such an activity. Well, The Holroyd Arms, In Guildford are now offering such a service, with their highly enjoyable ‘We are MAXESIVE’ experience. So not wanting to miss out on such an opportunity to drag my two teenage kids out ‘Kicking and screaming, On a cold miserable winter Wednesday evening recently I dually obliged! The pub itself has been completely refurbished and transformed by owners Andy and Lisa, with a fantastic, refitted stage and sound system and open bar area inside. Outside, where the ‘Axe Throwing’ takes place, it is beautifully lit up and Andy is there already waiting for us to go through the safety procedure. After signing the waiver and we got to grips (literally) with the technique and my two siblings happily while away the next hour, lobbing axes to their hearts content at the circular wooden targets. The scoring system was easy, 2 points for inside the blue ring, 3 points for the black, 5 points for a bullseye plus a bonus of 10 points if you hit the two red dots outside each circle. Well, rediscovering my inner Viking was a total joy, there is something hugely satisfying about the sound of metal splitting wood. After we finished and ‘Daddy’ showed his siblings, just who was boss, it was time for ‘Burgers and Chips’ already pre-ordered and waiting for us inside. And of course, although no drinking is allowed before or during the activity, it is a pub after all, so there was also a well-deserved victory pint for the ‘Winning Axe Wielding Warrior of Worplesdon’ I highly recommend this activity for family, friends, Christmas work do or just for taking the mother-in-law out… Andy tells me they are also opening some enclosed ‘Rage Rooms’ soon as well, where you can smash up, Glass and electrical items of your choice, now that does sound like fun for a ‘Dry January’ festive hangover!
