ELLIE GOULDING SPLITS FROM HUSBAND

Sadly after 4 years of marriage, Brit singer Ellie Goulding and her art dealer husband Casper Jopiling have parted ways, with both releasing statements sharing the mutual love and respect they still have for each other and their wishes to co-parent their son Arthur, whilst still being “the Ellie took to her Instagram account to share the news: “In light of recent stories, I feel I have been left with no choice but to let you all know that Caspar and I privately separated some time ago. We remain the closest of friends and have been successfully co-parenting with our son’s best interests at heart. We are committed to protecting our family privacy and thank people in advance for respecting our wishes – we won’t be commenting further. Thank you.”

Casper responded with: “Ellie and I made the decision to separate some time ago. Our immediate family and close friends have known for some time – otherwise we chose to do what we could to keep this private. Ellie and I remain the closest of friends and, most importantly, ‘co-parents’ to the best kiddo in the world, Arthur.”

The couple married in 2019 and son Arthur was born in 2021.

The fact the couple have separated but stated they remain “the best of friends” may be hard to believe but on Monday February 26th the couple went out together smiling and putting on a united front. Sadly, there may be trouble in separated paradise as Ellie has been linked

NADIA LAUNCHES KIDFLUENCE APP

Surrey-born Nadia Essex has been working in TV for nearly 10 years including popular E4 Show ‘Celebs Go Dating’ and has been creating social media content for brands for over 7 years.

As a mum to a toddler Nadia was offered multiple ‘kid’ deals that she felt were not family friendly, but she eventually found a gap in the market to connect influencers with like-minded family businesses, and Kidfluence was born.

The Kidfluence App is designed to connect businesses with families as well as influencers and celebrities and vice versa. It’s a win, win situation!

It works by the influencers/parents viewing suitable offers from family friendly businesses on the App and in return they offer to create stories, reels, posts and shorts showcasing these businesses to show their followers.

The Kidfluence App also offer discounts, special offers and high value content showcasing businesses to potentially millions of active mums and dads looking for fun ways to spend time with their kids.

ROMEO & MIA SPLIT AFFECTS VICTORIA MORE!

Romeo Beckham has split from his girlfriend of 5 years, model Mia Regan, and Victoria is said to be heartbroken (more so than her son!) as Mia was like a daughter to her.

Romeo, the youngest of the Beckham boys clan, aged 21, had been dating the fashion model since 2019 and many suspected they would marry.

However, the split is amicable and aspiring footballer Romeo and Mia are said to be on good terms and will remain friends. Apparently mum Victoria, 49, is the most affected by the separation as she had been very close to the socialite model and they would meet up regularly and call each other for chats.

Victoria is planning on working with Mia regardless of the Romeo split as they both share a love of fashion and Victoria chooses the models for her campaigns; according to reports Mia is top of her list from her next collection. Romeo is said to be “cool” with the idea of his mum remaining friends with Mia.

FOR HIM WHAT'S TRENDING... # CHECK IT OUT

ing Charles III recent cancer diagnosis has turned a muchneed spotlight on male cancers, not just in the UK but globally. Charles broke royal protocol by announcing his health problems to the media, in the hope that more people will get checked out.

Although Palace officials have not given the exact details of Charles’ cancer he was treated for an enlarged prostate in January.

BBC One’s ‘EastEnders’ has also bravely tackled the subject of male cancers with one of its lead characters Alfie Moon (played by Shane Richie) having been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The show has touched on Alfie’s diagnosis, his prostatectomy, hormone therapy and radiotherapy treatments.

Sadly 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime. If you’re over 50, you’re black or your dad/brother has had it, you’re at even higher risk. Prostate cancer is not always life-threatening but when it is the earlier you catch it the more likely it is to be cured.

Possible prostate cancer symptoms include; difficulty starting to urinate or emptying your bladder, a weak flow when you urinate, a feeling that your bladder hasn’t emptied properly, dribbling urine after you finish urinating, needing to urinate more often than usual (especially at night) and a sudden need to urinate. It is advised you make an appointment with your local GP if you are experiencing any of the problems listed above.

However, most men with early prostate cancer don’t have any signs or symptoms so ensure you get regular medical health checks at your GP; a simple urine test can detect high levels of PSA, an indicator you could have prostate cancer.

For more information on the disease visit www.prostatecanceruk.org or call 0800 074 8383

LONG HAIR IS BACK

Longer hair for men is in this Spring/Summer, if you fancy taking the plunge? The 2024 Emmy Awards saw actors like Pedro Pascal and Jeremy Allen White grace the red carpet donning longer tresses. Not to mention Hollywood heartthrobs Leonardo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt and Jared Leto who are huge fans of longer hairstyles. Brad favours tousled mid-length, Leonardo prefers slicked-back and Jared has braved the all-out long, rocker style. In addition to these A-list celeb advocates, Google has seen a 200% increase in searches for “how to style long hair men.” However, maintaining longer hair can be difficult, especially when you're in that really awkward inbetween stage. Sit down with your hairstylist/barber and set a plan of how you want your hair to look as it grows. Make sure to discuss your desired end goal, in terms of style and length and this will help your stylist to understand how to shape your hair and customise your current haircut to achieve your look. Remember products are key when it comes to growing your hair out. We are huge fans of Bluebeards at Clean Cuts in Guildford, Oribe at Nico Bouquet in Cobham or Davines at Hair & Bone in Esher.

FOR HER WHAT'S TRENDING... # CUT IT OUT

hat is Domestic Abuse? Well for starters - It's NOT your fault and you are NOT alone, as your perpetrator would

Each year ESDAS (East Surrey Domestic Abuse Services) receives nearly 3,000 referrals and over 20,000 contacts from survivors and Domestic Abuse can be controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour or violence and abuse between family members or partners. Its more widespread than you think and can happen to anyone regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, orientation or income.

This month the #CutItOut Campaign was launched following a tragic murder. In 2017, weeks after confiding in her hairdresser, Kerri McAuley was killed by an abusive partner. ESDAS have been told by many hairdressers and beauty therapists that customers build up a relationship with them where they feel safe and comfortable – hearing many shocking parts of people's lives. The charity want to offer these female professionals free training on how to be confident in spotting the signs of abuse and how to refer people to get help.

If you work in a Surrey beauty or hair salon email tina@esdas.org.uk for more information. A simple one-hour training session with ESDAS could help to save the life of a troubled client that walks through your door.

ESDAS, said on the difficult subject of domestic abuse, “Understand that it’s not easy to accept that a loved one can behave like this. Often because you cannot justify or explain the behaviour, you assume that it is your fault. You are not to blame for the abuse.”

High profile female celebrities including Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Reese Witherspoon, Mandy Moore, Halle Berry and Fearne Cotton have come forward with their domestic abuse stories shocking the press – including reports of broken bones and black eyes, although a lot of the women claim that the psychological abuse was more painful than the physical abuse by their partners.

Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women and 2 women are murdered by their partners each week. This has to stop! See www.esdas.org.uk for help and advice.

The Surrey Awards 2024, rewarding “the best of the best” in Surrey is raising much needed funds for ESDAS this year as one of our chosen beneficiary charities.

LEMON HERB CHICKEN SKEWERS WITH BLUEBERRY-BALSAMIC SALSA

This is perfect light Spring/Summer recipe, packed full of flavour. Great for your waistline as well as your tastebuds. Blueberries are the standout ingredient for the sweet and sour sauce that accompany these healthy grilled kebabs. You can also serve any leftover salsa on bread with creamy camembert or tangy goat’s cheese.

INGREDIENTS

(serves 4)

• 1 garlic clove

• 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

• 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil

• 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon rind

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

• 4 skinless, boneless chicken thighs, each cut into 6 pieces (about 1 pound)

RECIPE

• 1 cup blueberries, divided

• 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

• 1/2 teaspoon honey

• 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion

• 1 teaspoon minced jalapeño pepper

• Cooking spray

DIRECTIONS

1. Drop garlic through food chute with food processor on; process until chopped. Add parsley and next 6 ingredients (through black pepper); process until finely chopped. Add 1/8 teaspoon salt; pulse to combine. Combine herb mixture and chicken in a medium bowl; toss to combine. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour. Wipe out food processor.

2. Combine 1/2 cup blueberries, vinegar, and honey in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low, and cook 10 minutes or until thickened, pressing with a spoon to break up blueberries. Place blueberry mixture in a medium bowl. Add remaining 1/2 cup blueberries to food processor; pulse 5 times. Combine chopped blueberries, 1/8 teaspoon salt, onion, and jalapeño pepper with vinegar mixture.

3. Preheat grill to medium high heat.

4. Thread 6 chicken pieces evenly onto each of the 4 (8-inch) skewers. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Place chicken on grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 10 minutes, turning occasionally. Serve with blueberry salsa.

WINE MATCH

Any dish with lemon has a high level of acidity, which will make any wine you drink taste sweeter. So although pairing a citrusy Sauvignon Blanc may seem like a natural choice it should be avoided as it could make the wine taste flat. A far better option would be to go for a neutral Italian or Spanish wine – something earthy like a Verdicchio an Albarino or Spain´s up and coming white Godello. If you are not up for hunting in a good wine merchants, a mid-priced range Pinot Grigio from your local supermarket could always do the trick.

If red takes your fancy, opt for a red with a marked acidity of its own like an Italian Valpolicella or tannic Chianti. An oak-aged Spanish red such as Rioja Reserva also tastes great with lemon and chicken. Salut!

MOVIE REVIEW ALBUM REVIEW BOOK REVIEW

GHOSTBUSTERS –FROZEN EMPIRE

Another outing for the Ghostbusters squad is upon us this March.

The Spengler family returns to where it all started - the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top secret research laboratory to take busting ghosts to the next level.

But when the discovery of an ancient artefact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new (Paul Rudd from ‘Antman’) and old (Bill Murray from the original 1984 ‘Ghostbusters’) must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

The film's director Gil Kenan last directed ‘A Boy Called Christmas’ and famed horror flick ‘Poltergeist’.

Jason Reitman who last wrote ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ and the critically acclaimed ‘FrontRunner’ was enlisted to write this sequel, and has done a fab job.

You can tell this movie has an equal amount of Kenaninduced eeriness and Reitman entertainment value. Enough to make you jump off your seat but not too much to scare younger audiences!

With a certificate of 12A and UK release date of March 21st – we hope adult and teen audiences enjoy this supernatural, ghostbusting thriller.

EVERYTHING I THOUGHT IT WAS –JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

Justin Timberlake is back after a six-year break with this belter of an album ‘Everything I Thought It Was’ dropping on March 15th.

Timberlake admitted the album (his first since ‘Into The Woods’ in 2018) took 4 years to produce but has ensured fans it will be worth the wait!

Lead single ‘Selfish’ has already proved a hit since its official release earlier this year and Justin has described this sixth studio album as “complex within its simplicity…my most straightforward album to date.”

It’s been a great year for Timberlake. He recently reunited with his former NSYNC bandmates to release the single ‘Better Place’ in support of the new ‘Trolls Band Together’ soundtrack - where he reprises his role as lead character Branch - as well as a collaboration with Nelly Furtado and Timbaland called ‘Keep Going Up’.

Promoting ‘Everything I Thought It Was’ Timberlake has enlisted the help of his good pal and actor Benicio Del Toro to narrate the trailer.

Justin also kicks off his ‘Forget Tomorrow World Tour’ on April 29th, where he will be singing songs from the new album and firm favourites such as ‘Bringing Sexy Back’ and ‘Cry Me A River’. Although no UK dates have yet to be announced, record label RCA has indicated that UK tour dates will be added in the coming months.

SEDUCTION – EMILY MARTIN

‘Seduction’ is billed as “a young woman's perplexing journey through the realms of love and lust.”

It is the first novel from Surreybased author Emily Martin and explores the depths of a toxic love affair; unearthing gaslighting, trauma bonding - but above all passion, all interwoven with soulsearching intimacy.

The story centres around heroine Louise and her on/off relationship with “the love of her life” Jack, whose seductive prowess ensnares the submissive Louise. This ignites a series of soul-searching sexual encounters that shatter her world.

Their passionate yet toxic relationship spans years, delving into themes of narcissism as well as the tricky subject matters (sometimes unnoticed in relationships) such as gaslighting and trauma bonding.

Louise attempts to move forward, even getting married, but Jack resurfaces unexpectedly, reigniting their love affair.

Are they fated to remain entangled in this fiery, disturbing rendezvous forever?

Beautifully written, Emily Martin delves into the deep and often difficult psyches of her main characters and tackles the ‘abusive relationship’ plotlines with panache. Available to buy from Amazon now.

SAM RYDER - SURREY

News broke this month of the return of Surrey’s most treasured family festival, Guilfest. After a 10-year hiatus the award-winning festival is back on 29th and 30th June with top acts including our cover star Sam Ryder, Boyzlife, The Stranglers, Black Grape, Peter Hook and The Light. What’s more Sam Ryder is such a huge fan of our beautiful home county he is also performing at the Hampton Court Palace Festival in June and also Pub in the Park Reigate in July. But what is the deal with Sam? How did he go from a relative unknown in 2020 to the huge star he is today?

SURREY BOUND!

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 31 39 FEATURES

UNKNOWN ARTIST TO GLOBAL SUPERSTAR

In 2020, as the world went into lockdown, Sam Ryder uploaded the first of his now infamous covers. They quickly caught the attention of some famous fans (think Justin Bieber, Sia, Alicia Keys and Elton John) with compilations of his videos appearing on The Ellen Show, BBC’s Newsbeat and more. As the videos kept coming, so did the fans!

Fast forward 4 years and Sam Ryder

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 31 40 FEATURES

stands with 18M social followers and is in the running to be crowned as Tik Tok’s most popular UK artist account for the second year in a row. This would be no mean feat should it happen, especially with Ed Sheeran in full campaign mode and a favourite to take this crown.

Sam’s 5 song EP ‘The Sun’s Gonna Rise’ rolled out a track at a time, amassed some 45 million streams globally. He has spent much of his adult life touring, writing and performing in bands, lived in Hawaii for a while and even owned a vegan coffee shop before closing it down and deciding the time was right to pursue his dream of becoming a solo artist.

The culmination of the EP campaign was the release of More, a song that touched the hearts of almost all who heard it. With the powerful chorus stating “All anyone wants is more time, more life, more healing” fans were often able to connect that sentiment to their own lives with 1,000s of stories emerging on line of a song that comforted those who were sick, had relatives who were unwell or who were simply sick of being separated from their loved ones.

Then came the first foray into the world of live shows for Sam Ryder the solo artist. First of just moments after the restrictions on venues lifted Sam performed a free show as a thank you to the fans that had joined him in the preceding year, at Dalston Roof Park. The predicted thunderstorms

stayed away, the fans didn’t and they came out in their droves. But did that mean Sam would sell tickets? Yes he would. A subsequent first paid ticketed event at London’s Courtyard Theatre in October sold out in under ten minutes, this was followed by the announcement of Sam’s first ever full UK tour for 2022. The whole tour sold out so quickly that a second London show at Lafayette went on sale, only to sell out again meaning a third now sold out show was announced.

So if 2020 was about lockdown and 2021 was about the beginnings of releasing original solo material, Sam representing the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2022 with song ‘Space Man’ where he became the highest scoring UK entrant with 466 points. Only to be outdone by Ukraine in what can only be seen as a bit of a sympathy vote due to the ongoing war with Russia, the UK and Sam were sort of the people’s winners on the night!

Then there was his amazing performance at the palace for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in his sequined union jack suit, also in 2022!

Sam’s Tik Tok causing quite a stir took over most of 2023 plus a whole raft of collaborations in discussion it seems that world domination might not be a stretch too far for this incredible talent in 2024.

That’s after he has done his fill of Surrey Festivals!

IWDINSPIRING SURREY WOMEN

FEATURES

Smart, kind, loveable, brave, clever, beautiful, funny and most importantly perfect just the way you are.

It’s International Women’s Day on March 8th and this month we’re celebrating all the incredible women we have in Surrey (and in our lives!) and thank them for all they have done for us. Mums, wives, sisters, friends… it is a day to celebrate and honour Women.

Surrey is definitely one of the most sought-after home counties to live in and we have a plethora of successful business women achieving amazing things day after day. These remarkable women are revealing all in this feature on what it’s like being a mum, wife, female boss whilst juggling family life and the obstacles they’ve had to overcome in a male dominated world. Plus their personal advice to women in Surrey.

Let’s take this month to really appreciate the amazing women we have in Surrey. Here are just a few….

CAROLINE LUNA WILLIAMS

– FOUNDER OF THE LUXURY

COLLECTIVE SURREY & THE THRIVE CLUB

Self-starter Caroline or Luna as she is known to friends and family is the founder of two successful Surrey based networking groups; the Luxury Collective Surrey and the Thrive Club. She is originally from Sweden, but Surrey has been her adoptive home for the last 15 years. With an impressive career, spanning 20 years in energy and commodities, she is also a full-time wife and mother. How does she do it all we hear you ask?!

“I love learning new things and meeting new people and I am always on the lookout for collaborations to explore new business avenues. Running my own business is exciting and gratifying and I am proud to have won the SME Surrey Business Award for "Best Networking Group" in 2023.

I have a large family and my husband also runs his own business so being organised is key, and I do love my colour coordinated google calendar... but of course even the best laid plans sometimes don't work out and chaos ensues, I think any mum, working, entrepreneur or otherwise can attest to that! I take comfort in Michelle Obamas words: "you can have it all, just not all at the same time".

I started my career in the early 2000's in the energy business, first in sales & marketing for an industry publication, followed by a decade as a commodities broker. In this heavily male dominated, pre-me-too world, I had to grow some pretty thick skin and learn to put my stake in the ground, hard learned lessons which have stood me in good stead ever since.

I have "She means business" by Carrie Green on audible and I must have listened to it 20 times at least. I think she has done a fantastic job in breaking down and detailing the actual work required to run a business and some great strategies and tips. Through my business I meet inspirational women every day, listening to everyone's individual stories, aspirations and achievements is hugely inspiring to me and I've yet to meet a boring business woman!

Entrepreneurship to me means having a viable business idea and the tenacity to drive the project forward and to make it happen. Not every business needs to become a million-pound enterprise to be deemed successful. Social media is terrible for comparing yourself to others. I am a big believer in only taking advice from people who have already lived and achieved my

dreams, not those who haven't. I would say confidence and selfforgiveness would be my biggest tips. We all make mistakes and bad decisions along the way and that's life so, learn from the mistakes, forgive, and have confidence in yourself”.

KATE GREGORY

– CO-FOUNDER & DIRECTOR OF THE GIN KITCHEN

Kate was a real-life Kelly McGillis aka Charlie in ‘Top Gun’, graduating with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering she went onto run air combat projects for the UK government. After deciding to live the quieter life she started the Gin Kitchen Distillery in Dorking in 2016 and is now serving her premium gin around the world and to the local folk of Surrey in her awardwinning Surrey Hills bar.

“As the Gin Kitchen started to grow, I found out very quickly that I was responsible for setting the company culture and I am really proud to have built a female-led business where women are truly valued.

For example, we can leave early to do the school run, or stay at home if we have a poorly child, knowing it won't count against us. We can just focus on making fabulous gin.

Juggling work with family life can be tough as the workload is very high but I'm fortunate to have three very patient children. It is important for me to dedicate time with my family and so I always set aside the hours between dinner and bedtime. I can then get on with admin work without distraction when they're asleep.

In my previous maledominated defence career, I was at a meeting in Paris. The room was full of French men who asked me for coffee. I made them all coffees and after a while they started to wonder where the chair of the meeting was. I introduced myself, to some very flustered faces. But I haven't experienced any real obstacles due to being a woman. When I decide to do something, I just focus on making it happen. I don't waste any time worrying about barriers.

Nobody's going to stand in the way of a bad-ass woman on a mission! So my advice for other women wanting to start a business is to find something you're passionate about and just get on with it.”

CORAL YOUNG – FOUNDER OF CY HAIR

Coral is a proud single mum of three and started CY Hair Extensions to get back into the world of business in 2022. She could have taken the easy route out and been on benefits and handouts as a single mum - but wanted to show the world that she can thrive in business, be a good mum and a positive role model to other women and ultimately her kids.

“I'm Coral, an expert extensionist and the proud owner of CY HAIR, where we specialise in delivering hair extension excellence in Surrey. Juggling the intricate dance of entrepreneurship while caring for

my lively trio of offspring - aged 2, 3, and 6, feels like starring in my own gripping saga!

Sending my youngest off to nursery three days a week may tighten the purse strings, but witnessing their radiant smiles as I dive into my work is truly priceless. Guided by my unwavering belief that "Where there's a will, there's a way, and Coral always finds a way!" I tackle each day's challenges with steadfast determination.

Mornings kick off promptly at the crack of dawn at 5am sharp. With skilled multi-tasking, I orchestrate the morning hustle, ensuring each little one is ready to conquer the day. It's a whirlwind of laughter, cereal spills, and superhero requests - a labour of love that sets the stage for the day's unfolding adventures.

To all the bold, ambitious women out there ready to embark on their entrepreneurial journeys: Craft your strategy, seize the moment, and march forward with unwavering resolve. Amidst the peaks and valleys lies the electrifying journey, waiting for you to conquer it”.

MARIA ROMANO – SPAGHETTI TREE FOUNDER

After discovering an old building in the picturesque village of Walton-on-the-Hill by a pond adorned by swans, ducks and a heron in 2004; the first ‘Spaghetti Tree’ restaurant was born, a dream materialised by female founder Maria Romano. Fast forward 20 years, 8 Awards and 2 spin-off restaurants, the dream continues.

“Throughout my life, 3 passions have been constant: family, food and music. These pillars continue to shape the journey of our restaurant, Spaghetti Tree, turning a vision into a reality.

This year marks 20 years since opening & we’ve faced our fair share of challenges including a couple of recessions and the pandemic. During these uncertain times my children were the reason to keep moving forward.

I still believe the key to our longevity has been our ability to adapt and stay current with the times. We’ve embraced new trends and kept things fresh.

At some time or another over the years I’ve been fortunate to have all my children involved. Creating a family driven atmosphere. Whilst my boys have ventured into diverse career paths my daughter, Dana, has remained steadfast, evolving into my valued business partner. She has also brought her expertise in cocktails which has made our restaurant even more popular and with our vibrant atmosphere it has made Spaghetti Tree a go to destination for many.

Together we have opened a further two sites. The key to my success as a female boss is rooted in leading by example - I never ask my staff to do anything I wouldn’t do myself! Balancing compassion for my teams needs with maintaining a professional boundary has been crucial. Recognising the fine line between being a boss and a friend has contributed to earning respect. My achievements in the industry including several awards for the restaurant, British Takeaway Awards, a Surrey Award and for community involvement have further solidified a reputation built on both leadership and accomplishment.

My advice to women is to pursue their dreams with determination and hard work. Success does not come easily. It requires giving 150% to everything you do. It’s about persevering and never giving up but also constantly learning and growing.

My daughter and I have been blessed with the support of our family and our partners Phil and Gemma. Without them we couldn’t do this.”

TINA TALBOT - AUTHOR OF THE SURVIVAL SUPER SQUAD

Tina is the Epsom-based author of the ‘The Survival Super Squad’ - a series of children’s books that are environmentally themed, educational and fun. She has written and published 7 books to date, with another 6 on the horizon. She has learnt so much from the children she visits in schools and the people she has been lucky enough to meet along the way, including Sir David Attenborough.

“Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’. These are powerful words, and yet they can seem quite daunting. It’s easy to think that these words are just for politicians and world leaders, people with influence and power. But don’t be fooled. These words are for everyone. Making the change you wish to see in the world can be as easy as showing kindness, being tolerant and helping others. Live by example and inspire with your actions, and you will make a difference. This is how I felt when I set up Wildlife Whimsies Publishing almost 10 years ago. I wanted to make a difference, and the only way I knew how to do this was through story telling.

Something I share with every woman on the planet. Trying to keep all those plates spinning effortlessly so they don’t come crashing down can be stressful at best and overwhelming at worst. The concept isn’t new; women have been juggling since prehistoric times when they hunted, gathered, created art on cave walls and kept their babies alive. As women, we wear many different hats. We work, manage our homes, nurture relationships, bring up children and try to find time for our sanity, and if we do too much, sometimes these hats become slightly off-balance. Different aspects of our lives start trickling into each other as we attempt to do it all. And, if that’s not enough, the responsibility tends to fall on our shoulders to find the solutions.

On this note, the solutions I have found to achieving my work-life balance and the advice I would offer to other women are as follows. Firstly, learn to say no without

feeling guilty about it. It’s the only way not to become overburdened and overstretched. Secondly, don’t be afraid to ask for help. I would not be where I am today without the help of my husband, my friends and all the wonderful people who have shown their support for my mission, including the talented, Surrey based artists who illustrated my stories: Judit Matthews and Karina Siba.

Lastly, create bonds with other women. Building authentic bonds can be powerful and rewarding and turn into life-long friendships. We need each other’s support because we can’t do it alone. Take it from our female forbears. Their collaborative endeavours ensured the survival of our species, and the handprints they left behind on cave walls is a message to us all that together, we’ve got this!”

DR. THEODORA BRAVIS – FOUNDER OF THAMES DENTAL & FACIAL CARE

Dr. Theodora founded Thames Dental & Facial Care back in 2007 when she made the brave decision to move her clinical practice from the heart of London, in Harley Street, to the beautiful area of Thames Ditton in Surrey. The practice started with a handful of patients; Theodora and her dental assistant, and now it has grown to a specialist clinic with 5 dentists, hygienists and assistants.

“Being a female boss is challenging as it involves a lot of hard work which goes beyond a 9 to 5 job and extends to the late hours of the day. However, there is a feeling of empowerment in breaking barriers and leading with confidence. It often involves navigating a complex interplay of professionalism, assertiveness, and empathy while striving to achieve goals and support team members. Overall, being a female boss can be rewarding, challenging, and an opportunity to drive positive change.

Being a mother and a female business owner also has its challenges as my kids grow up to know that their mummy works during most of their school half terms. I do need to manage my time as effectively

as a I can, and I have a support system in place that allows me to work the hours that I do. I have learnt that setting boundaries, delegating tasks, and prioritising responsibilities has helped.

Additionally, fostering an understanding of workplace culture that values work-life balance can greatly help in managing these dual roles. It's about finding a balance that works for both professional and personal commitments while being adaptable to the evolving needs of both spheres.

I haven't had one specific woman who has inspired me. I generally admire women who have a positive attitude to life and work, like progress, and are enthusiastic. These are the type of women I like to have as my friends, and I do believe in being surrounded by like-minded people who will inspire you to achieve things.

The one thing that I would personally advise women that want to set up a business is to choose their team members and support staff at work very carefully. Compromise is not a good option as it can hold one back from achieving their full potential.”

MARINA IKONNIKOVA –FOUNDER OF ICON STYLE BEAUTY

Marina founded her own luxury beauty and aesthetics business, Icon Style Beauty, in Cobham 7 years ago and has consistently been recognised as one of Surrey’s leading practitioners in the field of beauty with a great local following and hundreds of 5 Star Reviews.

“When I arrived in this country seven years ago, my dream of opening a beauty salon ignited within me. However, I quickly learned that dreams alone are not enough; it takes meticulous planning, knowledge, and unwavering dedication to turn dreams into reality. Despite facing numerous challenges along my journey, I persevered, viewing each difficulty as a valuable lesson that shaped me into the entrepreneur I am today. Instead of comparing myself to others, I focused on surpassing my own limits. In a competitive beauty market filled with professionals, finding my niche became a personal challenge. I firmly believe that everyone possesses the magic to create the life they dream of; it's a matter of holding onto your goals, working diligently, and maintaining honesty with your clients.

My source of inspiration comes from my beloved dog, Crystal, a positive and fluffy companion whose presence reminds me of the beauty of life. Walking her amidst nature allows me to appreciate the generosity of the universe and the countless extraordinary moments that lie ahead. I am fortunate to have found my dream job –one that fills me with passion and joy every day. Being my own boss grants me the freedom to travel regularly, explore the world, and create a schedule that allows me to spend time with my loved ones whenever I desire.

The positive energy I exude attracts wonderful

clients and friends, enriching my life in ways I could have never imagined.

To those dreaming of starting their own business, I offer this advice: reflect on what sparked your passion as a child, when limits, logic, and negative experiences were absent. Avoid blindly following social media trends; instead, identify that unique interest that sets your soul on fire and dedicate yourself wholeheartedly to it."

Natasha is the proud owner of EQlibrium Clinics in Weybridge and Harley Street London and the winner of the 'Best Beauty’ in the Surrey Awards 2023. She offers a range of beauty and aesthetic treatments including PDO Threads, Skin Boosting, Fat Dissolving and Injectables.

“As a single mother and business owner, the journey here has been a challenging and sometimes lonely one. There are times when I haven't prioritised self-care or a worklife balance. Running a business can be all consuming, especially on your own.

Years later, EQlibrium has become more than just a business; it's now a family affair.

I am fortunate to work alongside Beth my assistant who shares my passion for skin health and aesthetics.

Together, we love creating a welcoming and warm environment where clients can feel confident whilst knowing they are receiving the best care and treatments.

In addition, my son Theo heads up our sister company, our clinical supplies branch EQ Supplies. It is a real team effort and I feel proud that we have built this all together. It's a blessing to work everyday with the people I love, securing them a future and having a lot of fun on the way.

We are excited this year as we launch new locations for our clinics and academy in the United Kingdom and the UAE.

As we embark on this new chapter, I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire and help other women now to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.

To women aspiring to set up successful businesses, I offer this advice: Stay true to your vision and never underestimate your capabilities. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. With determination and perseverance, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.”

MARIA HORNSBY-ODOI, FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR, HOUSE OF AFRIKA

House of Afrika was created by Maria out of a need for wider fashion options than the High Street offered; not only in style and design but also in sizing and fit. Maria designs and makes custompiecesthatmakeHouseofAfrikacustomersfeelamazing and begin a love affair for African prints and fashion.

“Whilst you have celebrities doing amazing things, I am mostly inspired by those whose private lives I have had the privilege of having access to. Seeing them first hand navigate challenges with resilience is motivating and inspiring.

In "Boss Lady" style, they exhibit fearlessness even through fear; they speak out against injustice and intimidation whilst others would remain silent for fear of backlash; they push through to find a way in the face of obstacles to achieve goals.

Being a boss does not mean you have to lord it over others and shout to be heard but their persistence, consistency and confidence sets them up to enter spaces denied to many. One of the greatest impacts these ‘Boss Ladies’ have is the willingness to serve and support those within their sphere of influence.

My advice to women wanting to set up a business is your mindset is everything; it's important that you understand the nature of the beast before you start. The truth is you would never fully understand how tough it gets until you start engaging with your business. It does get hard and you would need to work

hard on many levels. The effort is absolutely worth it. Learn to manage discouragement; you will get discouraged but you don't need to stay there.

Be willing to take calculated risks; this is an inevitable aspect of business if you are to make any head way. Be your biggest cheerleader; only you know what it has taken to take the next step. Celebrate yourself with every step you take towards achieving goals no matter how small. It keeps you motivated. Sometimes we get caught up in the big picture we fail to see how far we have come. Avoid the sideways glance; discipline yourself to remain focused on your business and what you want to achieve. Being obsessed with what others in the field are doing is a great distraction. Prioritising is important. Although we have young adults at home, family life is very important and something I love to give attention to. So whilst working on my business, I am mindful of the needs of my home as a wife and mother. Some things may be pressing and would need more time and attention at any given moment, be it the business or home life. Thankfully, working from home and having my husband's support, makes it easier to juggle competing demands. There are times when the juggling may go wrong but I don't beat myself over it, just evaluate, learn and move on.”

LISA HARRIS - FOUNDER OF LISA HARRIS SKIN SCIENCE & HOLISTIC SKIN COACH

Proud mother of 4 daughters ages from 28 – 9 years and it has had it challenges from studying full time for 4 years as a single mum in beauty therapy & holistic in the 1990’s , to finding and affording child care to starting up a business in the recession 2007 not knowing if I could survive from normal day to day living paying a mortgage and running a business at the same time. But looking back now in those moments its been my most valuable lesson in my faith in succeeding as a business woman and no matter what circumstances you come up against you must have determination, drive, passion and integrity in what you do and allot of resilience.

“I grew up in Cardiff Wales, and from the age of 7 years I remember telling my mother that I would like to create my own skin care and help people feel happy, this little memory from my childhood has led into what I’m still practising today.

My story started over 30 years ago, after suffering from acne as a teenager I was constantly researching the best remedies to treat my skin. During this time I developed a deep curiosity for the subject of skin health and well-being.

I first qualified as an Advanced Beauty and Holistic Therapist to acquire my skills and quickly concluded that I wanted to educate myself further enhancing my skills all areas of electrical/energy therapies, holistics and mind energy to fully treat and offer skin treatments that work natural with your skin without any toxins that could cause more harm than good.

Following this, I moved to Canada, specialising in holistic therapies as healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness, it is a balance of what you put into and on your body. During this time I gathered knowledge of the power of natural ingredients & therapies.

Upon my return to the UK, I deduced, if I were to peruse my own business, I needed to acquire business acumen and spent the next two years working for global brands; Johnson & Johnson and RoC, utilising my experience and ideas, along with demonstrating my facial exercises to support launches of new innovative products.

I founded Lisa Harris Skincare Science after I applied for a loan in the recession and I got it to my surprise, now it begins, initially focused on delivering natural skincare solutions, utilising uniquely curated experience and core beliefs. I started with one clinical salon - in Weybridge in 2009 and a second location in London which I opened in 2015, partnering with ITV Dr Hilary Jones MBE.

In 2018, I became curious in biotechnological advancements and quickly realised it was possible for skin care with proven efficacy that is cruelty free, vegan accredited and without negatively impacting our planet. And now have formulated my own skin care with proven efficacy to treat most skin concerns without any toxins, and really does work, it’s taken 4 years to develop and now I can offer my skin care knowledge in a bottle which I’m very excited to launch.

My journey has been so fulfilling and now I still continue in my message of natural beauty, I look forward to educating young girls/ ladies in skin health from within and out, and that you don’t need to go down the botox, fillers and other toxic beauty routes to achieve younger looking skin, it’s not right for young girls to inject toxins or fillers into their young, beautiful faces. Beauty has lost its way somewhat and I hope that my knowledge and experience within beauty, as a mother and as a business woman I can now share some of my wisdom in helping woman achieve their goals in the most trying times be it skin or a business idea you would like to achieve, you can do it, just don’t follow the sheep follow your own idea it’s the only way and keep going you will get there eventually.

I’m looking forward to now appearing in Beauty Investigates (TBA on SKY TV) as a skin expert in a couple of episodes where I demonstrate transformational treatments for face and body using combination of advanced technology and skin care products. My inspirational people in business have been my mum and dad, I’ve seen the struggles they have had in business and taught me to be resilient and most of all always be yourself, be good at what you do, authenticity is everything.“

MADE WARM & FUZZY

The word is out on Pantone’s 2024 Colour of the Year! They’ve chosen Peach Fuzz as an emblem for a year in which, after so long spent in isolation, we finally come together again. British sofa makers, Arlo & Jacob have embraced the move towards the warm and soothing, casting their modern furniture designs in this tranquil tone. They find it beautifully encapsulates the many comforts of home, while emitting a soft hum of energy that’ll have you floating happily throughout 2024.

There’s a very tactile quality to Peach Fuzz, evoking the feeling of stepping out of hibernation and towards loved ones, experiencing those face-to-face, skin-to-skin interactions we’d been missing. The hue has also got a very natural, human quality to it. It’s familiar and grounding while light and gentle. It offers a moment of respite while emitting a soft and soothing tone. Even the name itself is a welcoming one!

Peach Fuzz has a velvety, pinkish-orange quality to it, taking on a nurturing character. That, in tandem with its innate beauty as a colour, makes it a fabulous choice for an interior.

Arlo & Jacob recommend giving it a try as a wall colour, giving off a sense of warmth and quiet energy. It looks great in a monochrome palette, so adding some of their matching furniture to the mix, really ups the ante.

RAGE ROOM

Brace yourselves thrill-seekers, the new Rage Room experience at the Holroyd Arms Pub in Guildford, is not just breaking the norm…. but everything else too.

So what exactly is a Rage Room?

A Rage Room is a facility designed for people to vent their frustrations and stress by breaking and smashing things in a controlled setting where stress relief meets adrenaline-fueled chaos!

OUR EXPERIENCE

We arrived at 3pm on a Thursday afternoon and after donning our overalls, hard hats and protective glasses, we listened to a brief safety talk and then were ready to take on the Rage Room.

There were 3 large tables full of smashable items – loads of glass bottles, a fan, a heater, a drink’s stand, a TV cabinet and a microwave were all there waiting to “get it!”

You can choose from 5 different tools to smash with; including sledge hammers and crow bars of varying sizes and weights. Only 3 people are allowed in the Rage Rooms at a time but there is a viewing gallery outside so any extra guests can stand outside protected and watch the action unfold. And that it did!

FEATURES
SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 31 65

Riley and Emerson took on the Rage Room first smashing their way through half the items with glee, the TV stand was a particular highlight as took a while to bring down, although the glass is definitely the most fun!

The noise of the smashing items is quite cathartic too by the way.

Riley described it as “Exciting and so much fun!”

That left myself and Archie with the remaining half of the smashable items – which we pulverised in the last 15 minutes of our 30-minute session.

The Holroyd Arms Rage Room benefits from Bluetooth speakers so you can blast out your own music whilst having a smashing good time!

Sam added, “With a particularly hard day at work, it was a fun, therapeutic way to release stress for sure!”

Prices start from £15 per person (if you bring your own stuff) and go up to £35pp if you have the maximum amount of breakables.

We’d definitely recommend taking a visit to the Holroyd Arms Pub, where they’ve turned letting off steam into an art form!

MINIMALISM CURVED

Embrace Comfort and Elegance with BoConcept’s Curved Capsule Collection

The ‘Curved Comfort’ trend continues to see us embrace curved lines and sculpted round shapes, inspired by organic forms of nature. A gentle curve adds interest to spaces with a multitude of straight lines. Soft shapes add flow, movement, balance and a sense of soulful minimalism to our interiors. They create an ideal environment for relaxation: a feeling of home, a sense of calm and serenity.

A free flowing sofa offers a more intimate and inviting living space, creating an element of softness and sophistication into your home. Incorporating sculped curves through your sofa is a perfect way to optimise limited space and can introduce a touch of femininity through your home. BoConcept offers several beautifully curated collections including the Bergamo sofa with a round lounging unit, the Salamanca sofa, the Bolzano sofa & armchair, and the Modena sofa.

The Bolzano collection epitomises this shift to curved minimalism. With a sculptural silhouette, the elegant sofa has a streamlined look and feel. Designed by Morten Georgsen, the capsule’s organic round silhouette has a cocooning effect with curvaceous frames and puffed-up seats enhanced by pairing with cosy, inviting textures, like Lazio Beige bouclé. BoConcept’s Bolzano collection stands out thanks to its curved front panel that gives a 360 degree curve all the way around the seat. Additionally, there is now an option to invest in the modern accent chair, available with swivel functionality, seamlessly blending soft organic shapes with minimalist lines.

Continue the organic curves throughout your home with the Santiago dining table. Where beauty and functionality meet, this dining table makes an elegant statement piece for people who love to entertain. The oval-shaped top comes in durable and hardwearing ceramic, available in white, brown and AshGrey. This curvilinear design with enveloping shapes bring a warm and welcoming quality to dining spaces.

Enhance the coherence of your space by selecting accessories that mirror the sculpted round corners of your furniture. This approach adds visual appeal and ensures a seamless aesthetic throughout your home. BoConcept offers accessories that effortlessly complement their furniture, including rugs, lamps, and ornaments, fostering a complete, soft, organic feel in your living environment.

WINNING DESIGNS

SENSATIONAL SURREY HILLS

Sensational Surrey Hills is one of the most fun Surrey interior design projects we’ve worked on. The client brief was to create a unique and quirky family home that was very user friendly but also a great party house! The clients came to us with some initial plans from their architect, but the flow wasn’t working. The kitchen was cutting off circulation. The utility was open to the entertaining space and the garden door openings didn’t make sense.

THE PROCESS

My client loves to cook and during our drill down chat we spent a lot of time analysing how he likes to move around a kitchen and where he prefers items to be. There was also a breakfast station and cocktail bar on the wish list along with Crittall doors and parquet flooring. The floor plan and concept stages brought together the whole design. With the kitchen being moved to a more accessible part of the space and a row of doors leading to a hidden pantry, utility, breakfast station and cocktail bar. We also lined up three sets of Crittall doors so that each zone (cooking, dining & dancing) led to the garden.

THE LAYOUT & CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

We work on layouts and concepts in conjunction as they always influence each other. Three kids means lots of noise, so the clients were clear they would love to find ways of reducing this. This is

how we landed on our first quirky material choice of cork. We sourced some incredible cladding which allowed us to create a magical wall of hidden doors. Which not only look sensational but also cork has great noise reducing qualities. Both the breakfast station and cocktail bar are hidden behind sliding pocket doors, allowing them to be in use at different parts of

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 31 89
HOME & INTERIORS

MATERIAL PALETTES

We also designed a large island using a warm quartz with a bronze vein that then transitions into a liquid metal breakfast bar to get the party going! This party spirit is also continued in the lit, gold leaf cocktail cupboard, which glows up beautifully at night. Our client loves plants and nature, so we reflected this with rich green cabinetry and decorative shelving to display pot plants. The cork we chose also has a beautiful green undertone. To contrast with this, we chose to add rustic brick slips along the kitchen wall.

A common mistake we see in homes is that too

much is squeezed into a space, allowing circulation space or dancing space is vital to the success of an open plan room. We positioned the dance floor in the centre of the space and the dining zone off to one side.

LIVING ROOM DESIGN

The living room is open to the kitchen, but has concealed floor to ceiling pocket doors so the room

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 31 90
HOME & INTERIORS

can be separated when needed. We continued the same colour palette in this room, but added richer fabrics and interesting textures to bring a calmer, cosier feel to the space. The kids living space is at the front of the house with a vibrant colour palette, pattered window treatments and vintage furniture.

INTERIOR PRACTICAL SPACES

The working rooms of the house are all hidden behind the cork, utility door. Here we incorporated a utility room, boot room, office

space with hidden bed and shower room.

The kids’ bedrooms are large spaces with their own unique personalities. The family bathroom continues the more playroom theme with bold bottle green metro tiles and daffodil accessories. A statement bath is positioned under the window with a glass globe pendant above.

HOW TO ACHIEVE A SUCCESSFUL INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT

The success of this project was down to the space planning and innovative material palette. We advised our client to invest in the strong design statements and then used clever, design trickery to reign in the spend in other areas. We are passionate about building relationships with our clients, we want to know them, find out their passions, how they live and then weave all this into a truly unique design that completely reflects them.

The Seven Stars Pub in Ripley has undergone a huge interior and exterior makeover and opened its doors to the public on November 28th. The popular pub has been taken over by The Running Mare in Cobham owners, Adrian & Ollie, who have spent the last 2 months renovating the manor building, dating back to 1536, to get it back to its former glory.

The Seven Stars has long been one of the landmark bars in Ripley. The new owners are really excited to turn The Seven Stars into a destination for all ages and tastes and make it a vibrant social hub for the Ripley community and beyond.

Whilst Adrian comes from a hospitality background – he has run a number of successful pubs and bars before the Seven Stars – he spent a large part of his life supporting and travelling with his younger brother, the racing driver Julian Bailey (aka The Stig!), on the route to Formula One. THE mARCH HARE

So as March is now upon us and we think about the onset of Spring and warmer weather (more in hope, than earnest) and also about such things as Easter, Daffodils and …Rabbits….or more specifically…Hares! March Ones!

The March Hare is one of the delightful Heartwood Inn establishments that seem to be popping up more and more throughout the beautiful Surrey Hills countryside and indeed this one is in fact appropriately enough set right in the heart of Guildford.

We all know the story of Alice in Wonderland and the ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ along with his own table companion, The March Hare. So, we wondered what sort of evening we were going to have as my wife Alicia and I arrived for our delicious meal last week. It was thankfully, a much more refined affair, in this beautifully revamped old building with décor that was classic, stylish and seemed to come from a much happier, cosier past. It was spacious, bright, clean and shiny almost as if 'through the looking glass'

itself and set out on two floors. We were made to feel almost immediately like we were old friends in a real ‘home from home’ environment.

David our host, manager and ‘Maître-de’ possessed much Gallic charm, with plenty of ‘Savoir Fare‘ and ‘Joie de Vivre ‘ as he showed us to our table for two. He then proudly introduced us to the lovely Jordan, who was to be our very smiley and helpful waitress for the evening.

We ordered our drinks; a large glass of New Zealand Sauvignon called ‘Turning Heads’ which Alicia has not stopped raving about and a pint of beautifully poured Guinness for myself. As we gazed at the other contented diners all around, we noticed there was a very young girl celebrating her birthday on the next table with her family. Thankfully the helium balloon which she kept letting go of (accidently/on purpose!) didn’t have far to travel up into the ceiling and was within easy reach of her very patient and chilled out dad. Dogs are also made very welcome here too, which is lovely to see.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

For Starters, I went with the Chef’s Special of Chicken, Streaky Bacon and Apricot Terrine served with Pickles, Chutney, Toasted Sourdough and Alicia opted for a Goat’s Cheese and Leek Tart with Apple & Walnut Salad with Red Onion Marmalade. We were both very happy with our choices and even shared a bowl of Wild Olives.

For the Mains, I scrolled through the diverse and yet so simple to read menu and salivated at most of the dishes on there, but every time I looked away, no matter how hard I tried, I kept being drawn back to the highlighted box which had first caught my attention. The 8oz Rump Steak, which almost had a label attached to it saying ‘EAT ME’. So, I dually obliged. Cooked medium rare to perfection with a side of fries, salad and some peppercorn sauce it was beyond my wildest expectations. An absolute triumph from start to finish, oh and believe me, it was finished. Alicia took the Vegan option which was a very tasty Roasted Celeriac Steak with Mash, Kale and Red Wine Sauce, which she thoroughly devoured with glee.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 31 108

We then chatted with Jordan, our waitress, about her aspiring photographic career, as David came back to wish us well and bid ‘au revoir’ as we ordered our desserts. Again it was the Chef’s special for me, a truly spectacular Dark Chocolate Orange Dome, which just had to be seen to be believed and accompanied by a Cappuccino (as I was tonight’s designated driver). The newly self-appointed Talking Heads Ambassador Alicia (who was now incidentally on her second large glass), opted for three scoops of assorted flavoured Ice-Creams; Salted Caramel, Vanilla and Strawberry with an accompanying Gavotte Biscuit Wafer.

I’m not sure Lewis Carroll had this quite in mind when he wrote his novels but this March Hare was certainly a ‘Wonderland’ of Food, never late with any course and certainly had 'Alicia through her drinking glass!’

A sheer delight from start to finish and if this is just a taster of what’s to come then the Heart really is in this Wood of impeccable Inns!

March is your time to stop procrastinating and get on with the work at hand. Furthermore, if you have been in a disagreement lately, this is your sign to apologise. The more you try to prove you’re right, the more challenging the relationship is going to be. It’s okay to say you were wrong and make amends. Finally, balance is key. Cancer

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

24 JULY – 23 AUG

Are your thoughts really clear, Leo?

Your mind is running wild at the moment, and you need to learn to slow it down. This month you are going to be taught to remain calm and collect your thoughts. Romantically, if you are single, this is going to be an important month for you, as love is about to enter your life. Look out for that special someone! Don’t be startled if you find yourself being moved by the simple things in life, as your dreamy mind is finally being set free. Furthermore, letting go of your past is your only option if you want to move forward. We can’t change the past, and we have no idea what’s round the corner. Stay focused on the present, as it’s all we have. As a nurturing person, looking after the people around you brings you great pleasure. This month, find someone who needs your help and offer your services. The joy you get after giving back is like no other.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 31 122

Libra

24 SEPT – 23 OCT

Have you allowed yourself time to contemplate your situation, Libra? A lot has changed for you over the new year, and you haven’t quite adjusted to your new circumstances yet. Take some time to think about what you want your life to look like in 2024. As you lead your new life, you must become ruthless in your pursuit for happiness. You naturally tend to be a people-pleaser, therefore, doing things your way no matter what anyone else thinks will be very important. Don’t feel guilty for choosing yourself. Think of March as investing in you. You’re putting the effort into making your life more enjoyable. In a few months’ time, your future self will be thanking you. Astrologically, with Aquarius playing a big role in your life right now, embrace your quirky side!

SCORPIO

24 OCT – 22 NOV

Decisions, decisions, Scorpio. You have some tough choices ahead of you which may cause some stress in the coming weeks. Remember, there’s no rush and the more certain you can be of yourself, the more confident others are going to be in you. Furthermore, take this as your sign to explore your shadow self, the darker side of who you are. This isn’t the negative aspect of yourself, it’s just something that people don’t know about you yet. Whether it be your dark sense of humour, or a secret project you’ve been working on, let it be known! Finally, an attachment to someone or something is taking a negative toll on your mental health. Figure out if you can detach yourself from it in order to improve your life.

Sagittarius

23 NOV – 21 DEC

The secrets you’re keeping are tearing you apart, Sagittarius. You may think no one will understand what you’re going through, but someone will. Express yourself to someone you trust, and you’ll find out just how much they care for you. As a fire sign, you are naturally persuasive and have no problem getting what you want from others. Use your powers of manipulation for good and help not only yourself but the people around you. This is a gift and one that must sometimes be accessed. Finally, you can’t survive on your own, and other people couldn’t survive without you. Working as a team is your best option. Collaborating with others will lead to big results. Astrologically, with Taurus playing a big role in your life right now, your material possession will be important to you.

Capricorn

22 DEC – 20 JAN

Good karma is coming your way, Cap! As someone who tries to be a good person, you are allowed to expect and accept positive things happening for you. As long as you aren’t intentionally trying to hurt someone, you’re doing the right thing. You have a passion for what you’re doing with your life, and it’s something many people admire about you. Keep going and never lose this characteristic. You are an enthusiastic person, and it’s the reason why you are so happy with your life. Finally, you are a person on a mission in March, and nothing is going to stop you. You are using your power of intellect to achieve your goals. People are in awe of your abilities.

Aquarius

21 JAN – 19 FEB

March is going to be all about your amazing friendships, Aquarius! These are the people that stick by you through thick and thin as you navigate your different life journeys. Enjoy their company and let them know how much you care. Furthermore, you aren’t taking accountability for something in your life. It’s easy to blame someone else for your actions, but it’s down to you to own up to your mistakes. The people around you will be grateful that you’re opening up. This month, protecting what means the most to you will be very important. There’s no shame in putting in the effort to defend what makes you happy. Reflect on this situation and do what needs to be done.

Pisces

20 FEB – 20 MAR

Inspiration is about to hit, Pisces! If you have been feeling stuck lately, March is about to bring a newfound excitement to your life. Allow the inspiration to flow through you freely, guiding your every move. In the coming weeks it’s time to release yourself from a sense of guilt. Feeling guilty for past events isn’t worth the energy you’ve been putting into it. What’s done is done and no one can do anything about it. You have an air of authority about you, and others are in awe of your talents. As a leader, you are fair and just. Use your power wisely and help others along on their journey. Astrologically, with your ruling planet in your ruling sign, allow your imagination to run wild and transport you to a different universe.

AGNES JONES

WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN WRITING MUSIC?

My own life experiences, life events and emotions.

WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS?

My icon is Tina Turner. Bless her soul. Rest in peace the “Queen.”

YOUR MUSIC IS SO CREATIVE AND ORIGINAL, WE LOVE YOUR TRACK “KITTY” WHEN WE FIRST HEARD IT IN 2022, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HOW IT CAME ABOUT?

“Kitty” was written a few years back with my producer Alex, during a studio recording session. We came up with the idea to write a song about a naughty cat and dog relationship. The song was born there and then. The first draft of the song was recorded the same night. We laughed and cryed our eyes out while writing and recording the song. Ideas were coming out one after the other. In 2022 I re-recorded the song, improved the lyrics and production of the song. Originally from Latvia, I decided to submit the song to the Latvian TV show “Supernova” who selects the entry song for Eurovision. At the same time, I was planning stage production and visualising how to deliver the live performance, if the song would be selected for the live show. I contacted people in Latvia who work in

the music industry, TV and radio. I was seeking advice and feedback on the song and looking for potential people for a collaboration team in Latvia. I also shared my vision regarding the live performance. Unfortunately, the song was not selected for the 2023 live show. Sad but not perturbed, my next goal was to create an animated music video for “Kitty” using the vision board I had created.

In early 2023 I was searching for animated music video producers and at the Bookham Food Festival in the Summer I met Craig, who introduced me to David, who is a master of animations. David with pleasure accepted a great animated music video for “Kitty”, which is nearly complete. I haven't had a chance to release the song on music platforms just yet, as I was waiting for a complete video before I start promotion. I am currently planning a release date.

WE HEARD THAT LATVIA SUPERNOVA RECENTLY PUT OUT A SONG JUST LIKE KITTY – USING SIMILAR LYRICS/SOUNDS & STAGE PRESENCE FROM YOUR 2023 APPLICATION FOR THIS YEAR’S CONTEST – HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

I was gutted and shocked. When I saw the Latvian TV show “Supernova” 2024 entry “The Cat’s Song’s” live performance I could not believe what I was hearing and seeing. It felt like a piece of my heart and soul had been taken away from me. It is not a coincidence that the same country and the same show 2 years in a row will have 2 “Kitty/Cat” song submissions with the same idea, sounds and stage production for a live show. I came to realise my idea had been “stolen” or “borrowed” and someone else is getting the credit for it.

Kate Staples has dedicated her life to health, fitness, and sports, leaving a lasting impact in each realm she ventures into. A British record holder in pole vaulting, having shattered 42 British records, and also a trailblazer for women in the sport, contributing to its inclusion in the Olympics.

As 'Zodiac' on the hit TV show Gladiators she captivated millions of viewers every Saturday for six seasons, showcasing her strength and charisma on a grand stage.

Despite facing a life changing injury when a 40ft training session fall on Gladiators left her with a double neck break, Kate Staples refused to be defeated. Following 12 hours surgery, she made a conscious decision to turn her adversity into inspiration for others, stating, "I was determined not to feel sorry for myself and to put my experiences to good use and inspire others."

Fifteen years ago, she joined forces with Olympic legend Daley Thompson to motivate and energise clients to get fit through bootcamps and overseas training holidays, providing a platform for adults to improve their health and overall well-being. Then, whikst trying to get Kate's daughter into a local athletics club, she discoveried there were long waiting lists and people were being turned away, Kate pivoted her focus towards working directly with schools, bringing in expert coaches, many of whom have represented their countries in competitions, to instill lessons in speed, functional fitness and important lifelong skills among children. Kate commented, "The challenges posed by the COVID-19 lockdown and school closures significantly impacted our operations, However, in the past year, the demand for our Breakfast and After School Clubs has surged and the kids are thoroughly enjoying the fun, games, teamwork and camaraderie of the clubs again".

In response to this growing demand, Kate Staples and her team now offer a diverse range of inclusive and fun clubs designed to engage children in enjoyable and exciting ways while promoting fitness and well-being. Working with hundreds of children each week in schools and community centres, Aspire to Greatness is inspiring and fostering a love of physical activity, quality movement and healthy habits from a young age. ❤

"Today's children are the least active generation in history and could be the first to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. I welcome any initiative which encourages more young people to become active. Aspire To Greatness is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get fit, develop skills and to have fun within schools and local communities."

Lord Sebastian Coe, President of the IAAF

"It's more important than ever that children are encouraged to be active, fit and healthy. The wonderful initiative Run, Jump, Throw that Kate

and Daley have developed can help safeguard

children's fitness and participation in sports".
