Happy birthday to Victoria Beckham! The fashion designer and former Spice Girl celebrated her 50th birthday on 20th April, in style. Victoria was dressed in an ethereal sheer mint green dress while her family coordinated in black tie. To mark the milestone, Victoria celebrated alongside her husband David Beckham and their four children: Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and 12-year-old Harper. Her A-list friends including Tom Cruise, Salma Hayek and Gordon Ramsey, also attended the event at the private member’s club Oswald’s in London. Missing from the glitz and glam of the night was Nicola Peltz Beckham, Brooklyn’s wife. Hmmmm?!
Victoria’s former bandmates; Geri, Emma, Mel B and Mel C were present too. It was the first time Geri and Mel B came face-to-face since Mel claimed that Geri had been lying about her age back in March. Scary Spice claimed that despite travelling the world together, she had no idea how old Geri was. Mel claimed Ginger Spice liked to keep her passport close to her chest. This has caused friction between the pair, and they kept their distance at the birthday bash in pictures and videos. Following the exciting evening, Mel appears to have attempted to smooth things over with a post she shared with her Spice Girls bandmates with the caption: “What an amazing girl power weekend with all my girls, I have soooo much love and respect for you ALL #friendshipneverends”.
Despite group tensions, David Beckham recorded the group performing the signature choreography from the single ‘Stop’ from their 1997 sophomore album Spiceworld. In a video posted to Instagram. Victoria even responded to the video captioned “I mean come on” with a comment saying “Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all
Mel B hinted at a potential reunion tour on an Instagram story by sharing the video with the caption “About last night #tourdatescomingsoon”. When interviewed by Today last month, Mel B also teased a potential reunion and stated that the Spice Girls were working on something “very good”. Yet nothing was officially confirmed. The last time all the members publicly performed together was 12 years ago, at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Spice Girls, who formed in 1994. Could there be a reunion in the works? We hope so!

SFW & MARSDEN FUNDRAISER
Celebrity journalist, Angela Sara West, was recently rocked by a cancer curveball when her husband was diagnosed with acute leukaemia. Consequently, her recent additional role as a carer has seen her have to push back the next star-studded Surrey Fashion Week (SFW) celebrity charity catwalk show. SFW launched with Surrey’s own Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt in 2021, and the exciting concept show has since been attended by twotime ‘Strictly’ champ Oti Mabuse and S Club 7 star Jo O’Meara. Angela is fundraising with a few famous faces to raise vital funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity with her Surrey Fashion Week team. Joining her on the inspiring Banham Marsden March on 12th May will be SFW models, including Helen Burgoyne who, sadly, has secondary, stage 4 breast cancer, and Angela’s Monzda TV co-founder Donia Youssef, who has bravely beaten cancer no fewer than three times, thanks to The Royal Marsden. The world-leading hospital’s Surrey branch successfully treated Angela’s father when he had aggressive prostate cancer, while other family members have also undergone treatment there. Follow Angela on @surreyfashionweekuk for updates.
PETER ANDRE WELCOMES 5TH CHILD
Proud Dad Peter Andre welcomed his fifth child (and third with partner Emily MacDonagh) on Tuesday, 2nd April.
The Surrey-based couple’s healthy baby girl was born weighing 7lb 3oz in Taunton, Somerset - where the couple is temporarily residing to be close to Emily’s parents.
Through an Instagram story, Peter shared a sentimental picture of him holding his daughter with the caption ‘pure love’. The ‘Mysterious Girl’ singer’s brood is now up to 5 children, with two children from his previous marriage to former glamour model Katie Price - Junior, 18, Princess, 16, and two children with his new wife Emily - Amelia, 10, and Theo, 7.
Although the couple are smitten with the new baby girl, they have yet to name her. When writing for his column in OK! Magazine, Peter said, "Emily and I don’t seem to agree on them. So, I think it’s only fair that Emily decides – I hope she picks a good one”. He’s calling her “bubba” at the moment although apparently Athena and Charlotte are in the running.
HARRY STYLES BECOMES A STALKING VICTIM
Popstar, Harry Styles has been getting the ‘Baby Reindeer’ treatment - being stalked by a crazed fan, Brazilian national, Myra Carvalho.
Carvalho has been jailed and banned from seeing the 'Watermelon Sugar' performer. Carvalho pleaded guilty to a charge of stalking involving serious alarm or distress at Harrow Crown Court. Prosecutors claim that of the 8000 cards sent to Styles’ address, some were wedding cards and two of the letters had been hand-delivered.
Carvalho was sentenced to 14 weeks imprisonment and issued a 10-year restraining order for persistently harassing the singer. She is barred from entering part of north-west London and must pay a victim surcharge of £134.
TAKEAWAYS FIT FOR A QUEEN
Although the late Queen Elizabeth II had eaten the most luxurious foods in the world, Her Majesty would order a takeaway when she stayed at Balmoral Castle.
An insider revealed to Fabulous Mag that the former monarch would have fish and chips as a treat, which a footman would collect on her behalf from a local town, Ballater.
According to Hello! Magazine, like a true Brit the late Queen also used to enjoy a kebab. Jayne Seymour, a royal correspondent, shared that a takeaway in Swaffham, Krazy Kebabs, received a delivery order for Sandringham House. However, the late Queen isn’t the only Royal to have a penchant for takeaways. On BBC Radio One in 2027, Princess Kate confessed that her favourite takeaway was a “curry” but clarified that Prince William wouldn’t have it with her as he isn’t fond of spicy food. William is a known fan of the restaurant chain Nando’s. And we all know Prince Andrew likes a Pizza Express in Woking (from his BBC Newsnight interview!)

DUA LIPA - RADICAL OPTIMISM
Grammy award-winning music artist Dua Lipa will be releasing her third studio album ‘Radical Optimism’ on 3rd May.
On her podcast Dua Lipa: At Your Service, Dua claimed the album was 50% completed and she had decided on the name of her album in March of 2022. ‘Radical Optimism’ takes a similar direction sonically to Dua’s previous release ‘Future Nostalgia’ with influences from 70s psychedelic pop and Britpop. This can be heard in the two leading singles of the album ‘Houdini’, released on 9th November 2023, and ‘Training Season’, released on 15th February 2024.
‘Houdini’ kickstarted Dua’s new era with an upbeat and cheeky dance track which sets the tone for the fun and freeing feeling that ‘Radical Optimism’ aims to capture. The music video has striking choreography which was performed live in Dua’s electric performance medley of ‘Houdini’ and ‘Training Season’ at the 2024 Brits.
Voted the Best Pop Act of 2024 at the awards, Dua Lipa will go on tour this Summer with Glastonbury being a stop on her tour. Dua will be headlining alongside acts like Coldplay and Shania Twain on the iconic Pyramid Stage.
BITS & PIECES - MY MOTHER, MY BROTHER, AND MEWHOOPI GOLDBERG
EGOT winner, Whoopi Goldberg is releasing her new heartfelt memoir of her family and their influence on her life.
Bits & Pieces is a tribute to the loved ones who supported her on her journey to becoming Whoopi Goldberg. If it wasn’t for family members like her mother and brother, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma Johnson gave her children the care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be their true selves. When Whoopi lost her mother, Emma, in 2010 and her older brother soon after she felt deeply alone. ‘Bits & Pieces’ pays tribute to her loved ones through her fond memories of growing up in New York City with trips to Coney Island, museums, and magical New York Christmases.
Whoopi writes, "Not everybody gets to walk this earth with folks who let you be exactly who you are and who give you the confidence to become exactly who you want to be. So, I thought I'd share mine with you."
Fans of personal memoirs will be moved by this sincere tribute to family. ‘Bits & Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me’ releases on 7th May.

EMBRACING LIFE RADICALLY
The radical optimism of Dua Lipa’s fans has paid off and has led to the announcement of a tour and the launch of her highly anticipated third studio album.
‘Radical Optimism’ releases on 3rd May this year. Followed by a Summer Tour where the 28-year-old pop star will be headlining Glastonbury 2024, alongside popular acts like Coldplay and Shania Twain on the iconic Pyramid Stage.

STARTING SMALL BEFORE STARDOM
Dua Lipa came from humble beginnings born and raised in London to Kosovar Albanian parents Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa. She is one of three children with a sister named Rina and a brother named Gjin.
Her dad was a lead singer and guitarist in an Albanian rock band called Oda. Dua grew up listening to his music. She lists her father’s band as one of her major influences. Dua enjoyed music growing up, attending cello lessons and singing lessons at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, a specialist performing arts school producing talents like Amy Winehouse. Shortly after her family moved back to Kosovo when independence was reached in 2008; however, Dua decided to move back to London at age 15 to pursue her music career. During this time, she modelled and posted her songs to YouTube and SoundCloud. After covering songs on YouTube and covering the song ‘Lost in Music’ in an ‘X Factor’ advertisement, Dua signed a contract with Tap Management before signing her record deal with Warner Bros. Records in 2014. With this label, Dua released her self-titled first album in 2017 which is now certified triple platinum. Now an honorary Ambassador of Albania, Dua, has won three Grammy Awards and seven BRIT Awards for her music.
A NEW ERA OF OPTIMISM
The Kosovar Albanian singer’s third studio album explores radical optimism, a philosophical concept. Dua defines radical optimism in a press release as
FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 33 40
‘going through chaos gracefully and feeling like you can weather any storm’. Radical optimism suggests looking at the good in every part of life and the ability to remain calm and grounded in the face of uncertainty or problems.
It has been four years since Dua’s last studio release. The successful ‘Future Nostalgia’ explored the sound of ’80s and ’90s pop-funk and was full of Madonna and Kylie Minogueinspired disco. The album received a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album and a BRIT award for British Album for the Year in 2021.
‘Radical Optimism’ takes a different direction sonically. It is a psychedelic pop-infused record with Brit Pop icons like Primal Scream, Gorillaz, Blur and Oasis as inspirations. The two lead singles of the album ‘Houdini and ‘Training Season’ are inspired by these artists with their sassy lyrics and energetic tempos. They capture the joyful and liberating experience that ‘Radical Optimism’ aims to capture.
The ’Radical Optimism’ tour starts in Berlin, Germany, this June to October with a break before the final show in London at the famous Royal Albert Hall. Other than a show at Glastonbury, Dua will be stopping at other festivals along the tour such as the Open’er Festival, Mad Cool Festival and Nos Alive Festival.
FASHION FORWARD
Named as a fashion icon, Dua has strong ties to the fashion industry and has been named a fashion icon over the years because of her Mugler performance outfits and ambassadorship of high-fashion brands.
In 2024, Dua became the global make-up ambassador for Yves Saint Laurent Beauty. She started working for the brand
FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 33 41
in 2019 by becoming the face of the Libre and Libre Intense fragrances. The singer was featured in advertisements for the brand and covered the song ‘I’m Free’ to promote the eau de parfum.
Dua Lipa has had a close relationship with Donatella Versace and the brand Versace since 2018. It was only natural for the pair to collaborate which they did for the 'La Vacanza' collection under Versace last year. In a press release for the collection, Dua stated that she and Donatella had “decided to do it on a night out in New York”. The beachwear-inspired collection was displayed to the world at the Cannes Film Festival in a blockbuster runway featuring sun-kissed models on the May 23rd. The capsule collection was playful and optimistic, it encapsulated Versace glamour with its references to typical Versace motifs and materials with its butterfly prints, and chainmail fabrics in slinky 90s silhouettes. The collection keeps a luxurious and indigent summer in mind with its sparkling high heels, butterfly
jewellery and co-ord sets that combine two archive Versace patterns. The Versace collection was not Dua’s first foray into the fashion world. In 2020, Dua released a collaboration with the British denim brand Pepe Jeans. The collection took inspiration from the silhouettes and style of the late 80s and early 90s fashion.
MOVIE DEBUT
Outside of her music and fashion, Dua Lipa has featured in two movies, 2023’s ‘Barbie’ where she debuted in the role of Mermaid Barbie alongside a star-studded cast including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Kate McKinnon. Dua featured on the soundtrack with the first single of the album ‘Dance the Night’. The single was nominated for the Song of the Year award at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Dua also featured in this year’s spy-action comedy ‘Argylle’ to rave reviews.
Is there no end to Dua Lipa’s talents?!
Sam Burnett, our celebrity columnist has done her hair for Fashion Weeks and said she is one of the nicest celebs he’s met too! Fantastic singer, songwriter, model, fashion icon, movie star, Dua Lipa is well and truly worthy of her cover star status.

COLLAGEN BOOST
Collagen is a protein needed to provide structure and support to different parts of the body. It plays a key role in the skin where it helps replace dead skin cells which helps to give structure and strengthen the skin. As we age, our collagen production slows down leading to fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of age.
• Taking collagen supplements can help to maintain hydration and elasticity in the skin. Available from your local supermarket, Boots or a Health Food Shop.
• Eat collagen rich foods like berries and broccoli and gummies like Haribo sweets and skin-on chicken.
FAKE IT BEFORE YOU MAKE IT
If committing to a fake tan is not for you, a gradual tanning lotion can be ideal for a slowly developing natural glow. It is unlikely to become streaky and patchy due to its moisturising and slowbuilding nature. If you start this 1 week before a holiday you can start the tanning process slowly at home while your skin will be super soft and supple ready for a natural suntan. We recommend:
• Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Butter
• Dove Summer Revived Gradual Tanner
WET AND WILD
As we all know heat affects our Summer beauty routine. With the hotter weather, normal mascara can smudge more easily, so to look hot to trot this Summer and be ‘Swimming Pool’ proof we recommend investing in a good waterproof mascara, such as:
• Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara comes in black and brown
• Maybelline do a cheaper alternative –Waterproof Lash Sensation - that passed our smudge test!
BEST TIKTOK HACK
Freezing lip liner p encil before sharpening is the latest beauty hack taking over the internet. The "Viral Lip Liner Freezer Hack" refers to a popular beauty hack that is currently circulating on social media platforms, particularly TikTok. It involves placing lip liners (and kohl eyeliners too by the way!) in the freezer for a short period before sharpening them to make the process easier and more effective. This hack gained popularity due to its simplicity and effectiveness in making the sharpening process smoother, especially for lip liners that tend to be soft or creamy. We tested it and it works –giving a much more definitive lip line or eye line!

BODY BEAUTIFUL
3D ULTIMATE PRO
This treatment has a few variations and can be used on many areas such as: abdomen, arms, love handles, thighs, buttocks etc. It treats stubborn areas of fat, cellulite, loose and sagging skin.
There are 5 parts to the machine:
• Cavitation (Fat Melting) - This is an ultrasound that shakes the fat cells causing cell death which is then dispersed through your lymphatic system.
• Cryolipoysis (Fat Freezing) - This targets small pockets of stubborn fat- freezing to -7/-10 degrees, again causing cell death and dispersing through the lymphatic system.
• Radio Frequency- This helps with Cellulite and Skin tightening by heating up the skin causing a controlled trauma which stimulates collagen and elastin giving a tightening effect.
• Vacuum - This helps the lymphatic drainage process and helps break down cellulite.
• Shockwave – This enhances the other treatments.

FAT DISSOLVING INJECTIONS
Celluform is specifically designed for the treatment of submental fat / commonly known as ‘double chin’. Until now, the only way to get rid of a double chin was through aesthetic surgery. However, through research, it is now possible to remove the accumulation of fat in a simple non-traumatic way. The fat dissolving treatment improves skin elasticity without leaving scars or bruises.
It is injected into fatty areas where they liquefy fat cells, destroying them permanently. The breakdown of these fat cells occurs over several weeks post-injection and can deliver excellent results that really make a difference. The injection into the subcutaneous tissue dissolves the cell membrane and the stored fat is released. The body then removes the fat naturally via the kidneys.

With an emphasis on innovative, contemporary design solutions we have risen to the challenge of every project, interior or exterior. Combining our unique approach to metal items with wood, glass, stone, and other materials. At JRD we offer a range of furniture items including the Otolo range. We also design and produce items sympathetic to their environment, be it a rustic bar restaurant with an artisan feel – normally providing seating, counters, bars, lighting, signage, etc. such as Dog Star Brixton – or one-off sculptural items such as the tables for Vivienne Westwood. Our inspiration will often come from the clients’ desires, as well as tapping into nature and art to find a suitable solution. Hardly any 2 projects are the same, we continue to provide new and hopefully better designs.

FEATURES LOTUS ELETRE
ELETRE
The Eletre is luxury car maker Lotus’ first allelectric hyper-SUV and getting to test drive this stunning new vehicle at Bell & Colvill in West Horsley was pure pleasure from start to finish.
FEATURES
The Eletre delivers class-leading ride and handling, steering and aero performance – all areas of automotive design and engineering where Lotus has pioneered and dominated throughout its 75-year history, on both its road cars and race cars.
It comes in 3 models; the standard Eletre (from £89,500) the S version (from £104,000) with more as standard; soft door close, dark rear windows, sportier wheels and a spoiler or you can choose the R version (starting from £120,000) which is the fastest, doing 0-60mph in a staggering 2.9 seconds with an impressive, longlist of added mod-cons.
The standard – which we got to test drive – was still
super impressive, doing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. You could literally feel the surge and power on acceleration. Plus, the Eletre is fast, with a top speed of 160mph in all 3 of its models.
The Eletre blends the core DNA of Lotus models Emira and Evija, reinterpreting them as a hyper-SUV with advanced suspension and chassis. As well as having full electric seats, an electric steering column there are massage seating options too. The head up display makes the vehicle very safe too, ensuring the driver doesn’t have to look down at the dashboard controls. It is not intrusive either as you can see from the image below on the front windscreen.
SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 33 64
FEATURES
FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 33 65
Eletre is also future-proofed for Level 4 autonomous driving capability. There is an adaptive cruise control to set to certain speed limits, this feature ensures discipline, keeps safety and prevents any unwanted speeding fines and accidents.
With the add-on Park Assist Package you can also let your Eletre park itself! It finds a parking space and parks perfectly for you. If you have the app you can even use from outside the car. There is also pre-collision braking with all the Eletre models. It spots if you are about to have a collision and the car brakes automatically to prevent this. Plus, there is a handy rear braking assistance too - if you miss a car driving or pedestrian walking behind your vehicle, it prevents the accident by automatically breaking for you.
Carl Wallis, Lotus Sales Expert from Bell & Colvill - Lotus Surrey, added: “You can easily see how we are going to eventually be reverting into a fully autonomous driving experience, given the futuristic functionality of the Eletre.”
‘Range anxiety’ (which was considered a problem associated with consumers purchasing electric vehicles a few years ago) is not a problem with the Eletre. The vehicle has a 112kWh battery, storing a maximum of 373 miles (depending on spec) when fully charged. And their rapid charging is a further plus point, from 10-80% in only 20 minutes, and up to 74 miles of range in just 5 minutes.
Plus, a simple Google search shows there are now 59,000 electric charge points in the UK now across 32,000 locations. This is compared to the 8,300 petrol stations. Running out of charge whilst driving your electric vehicle is not a problem in 2024.
The Eletre has an interior like no Lotus before it. The luxurious, spacious cabin effortlessly fuses a performanceorientated, technical design with world-class infotainment and connectivity.
The sound system is out of this world too! As standard the Eletre and R variant comes equipped with the KEF Premium audio, which boasts 1380 watts of power through 15 speakers, providing a unique listening experience.
Should you select the S variant, you will benefit from a KEF Reference audio system, which is enhanced further to 2160 watts of power through 23 speakers (cost option on Eletre and R).
There is also a stunning, intelligent panoramic roof design. In Winter, this retains the internal temperature of the car to extend the range of the battery, to its maximum. It flips in Summer so the heat can be kept out and the double-glazed roof glass goes opaque during use. Nice touch. There is also an option to have up to 6 people saved on the Eletre’s driver profile. It remembers individual drivers and alters the mirror, steering, seat setting and head up display positioning automatically.

Modern retro
Embrace with BoConcept
In the realm of interior design, the concept of “Modern Retro” beckons, offering a delightful fusion of nostalgia and innovation. It’s a design ethos that seamlessly marries the charm of yesteryear with the sleek sophistication of today, resulting in spaces that exude both character and modernity. At the heart of this trend lies an appreciation for classic designs re-imagined through a contemporary lens, where traditional elements are imbued with a fresh, streamlined aesthetic.
One of the hallmarks of the modern retro trend is its homage to warm wood tones. In an era where sleek minimalism often reigns supreme, there’s something inherently comforting about the rich hues and natural textures of wood furniture. At BoConcept, where furniture has been meticulously crafted since 1952, this reverence for timeless materials runs deep. Inspired
by the functionalism wave that swept through Danish furniture design in the 1950s, our pieces reflect a harmonious blend of heritage and modernity. From the iconic Bergamo sofa to the timeless elegance of sideboards like Fermo and Lugano, each piece is a testament to the enduring appeal of warm wood in contemporary interiors.
In addition to warm wood tones, the modern retro trend embraces playful touches of nostalgia through vintage-inspired accessories. Picture whimsical lamps casting a soft glow, charming vases brimming with blooms, plush cushions adorned with retro patterns, and sleek mirrors that harken back to a bygone era. These carefully curated accents add depth and personality to any space, infusing it with a sense of history and charm.
Yet, amidst the nods to the past, the modern retro trend remains firmly anchored in the present, characterised by its commitment to clean lines and functional design. Here, simplicity reigns supreme, with furniture boasting timeless silhouettes that effortlessly blend into contemporary interiors. Whether it’s a sleek sofa or a stylish sideboard, each piece is meticulously crafted to marry form and function, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical utility.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
THE WATERMILL
The Watermill in Dorking is an upmarket, gastro pub but with a warm, welcoming feel. A real home from home place…. with a fantastic menu, beautiful décor, views to die for, seriously good food, drinks and the best staff we have met in all our 189 reviews!
The recent interior makeover of The Watermill consists of a luxurious central bar, open wood fire and living room-style seating at the front. At the back is a plush restaurant with grand chandeliers, booths and seating areas with a vast 310 capacity; including its three exterior dining areas. The outside of The Watermill is a bright, eye-catching pink which really makes this restaurant standout.
The premises are famous for being the old Lido back in the 60's and have the most stunning views over the Surrey Hills. The Watermill has stayed true to its heritage by choosing a pink exterior (as was the Lido in the 60’s) and a huge picture adorns the wall on the upper-level showcasing this alongside other great artwork, exposed brickwork and wood panelled walls and a real cosy feel with comfy sofas, large armchairs, big plush pillows and fluffy blankets!
Dogs are welcome here too; bowls and biscuits are laid out for them.
OUR EXPERIENCE
We arrived for our Thursday dinner and the restaurant was already buzzing at our “earlybird” time of 5.30pm. It was our charismatic commercial director Matt Fielder’s 60th Birthday the next day so maybe this is a sign of things to come for him in his
vintage years! Although as lead singer from the talented rock band Ransom, I highly doubt this.
On the night (or should that be late afternoon!) there was a fun vibe and a mix of families, couples (Happy 28th Wedding anniversary Eileen and Brian!), Sav from Head of Magic and his uni buddy and a big birthday celebration on the grand main table that seats up to 14 guests.
We sat in the main restaurant with beautiful hill views at a gorgeous window seat. We were served diligently by Kashia,
SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 33 114
who also happened to be Assistant GM; she made our dining experience fun and was very attentive explaining The Watermill 'Stix' starters that offer a tapas style sharing platter instead of a traditional starter.
We heard the cocktails were impressive so ordered from their Signature Section; the most amazing concoctions!
Matt went for a Marzipan Manhattan (I had a sip and it was delicious but deadly strong!) and I had a Rhubarb Martini, served with pineapple juice and vanilla pod. Sweet from the juice and vanilla but savoury from the rhubarb, it really was impressive. Both cocktails were beautifully presented in decadent crystal glasses and garnished with glacier cherries (instead of olives on a stick) for Matt’s and dried orange for mine.
STARTERS
With 6 different Stix food options to choose from we opted for the Chilli & Lime King Prawns and Chicken & Miso Meatballs and they were both amazing.
The King Prawns were large, succulent and lime zingy; offset perfectly by the chilli which gave it an extra tang. The colours in this dish; with shaved green and red peppers on top were beautiful. They were cooked on a BBQ style grill and the flavours from this style of cooking really showed. Definitely ordering this dish again!

RESTAURANT REVIEW
The Sticky Chicken & White Miso Meatballs with Honey, Chilli and Soy Glaze were great too. Sweet with a kick of spice and great flavours from the Miso and Soy. The sauce accompaniments to dip was delicious too.
MAINS
We went for the Lamb Rump with Roasted Jersey Royal Potatoes, Garden Peas, Gem Lettuce, Red Wine Jus and Salsa Verde. We totally loved it. The lamb was so tender and it literally melted in the mouth. The Red Wine Jus drizzled over the dish was so full of flavour and plentiful, so good! (Isn’t it always a bummer when restaurants are stingy with sauces and you have to ask for more. Not here!) The salad and vegetables were cooked perfectly in a light garlic oil dressing; colourful, healthy and delicious.
We also went for the 10oz Dry Aged Fillet Steak, Chunky Chips and Peppercorn Sauce with a Herb Crumb, cooked perfectly medium rare. The steak was succulent, large but not too overbearing, served with a giant grilled Beef Tomato and a Portobello Mushroom on top.
Presentation was key here, as is everything at The Watermill, with a cute mini frying pan for the chips and colourful plates and side dishes. Plus, a lot of the serving platters are wood to ensure that home-cooked “good pub grub” feel. A lovely touch. We finished every morsel of food and were pleased to say that this review was going to be one of our finest.
We have to say that The Roast Cobb Chicken & Chorizo on the Specials Menu that night looked amazing. As did the Shetland Mussels, Pork Chops and Steak, Mushroom and Ale Pie on our neighbouring table.
We definitely need to come back soon to try out some more of their amazing dishes!

DESSERTS
There is a wide range of tantalising desserts on offer; from Sticky Toffee Pudding, to Stem Ginger Cheesecake, Chocolate Brownie, Lemon Curd Parfait, Mini Doughnuts, Sorbets, IceCream and a wide selection of Cheeses. I loved their style of sizing the cheese platters from Large to Medium to “A Smidgen”….Cute!
On the recommendation of Kashia, we had to go for the Sticky Toffee Pudding served with Honeycomb & Black Treacle Ice-Cream and Hot Butterscotch Sauce. It was delicious! Moist and full of flavour, the sauce was amazing too – sweet but not too sickly.
I decided to go for the Caramelised Biscuit and Pistachio Filled Mini-Doughnuts which came coated in Cinnamon and Sugar. There was also a pot of hot chocolate and spiced rum sauce for dipping. So good.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
“Beautifully crafted, wonderfully set a refuge away from the rain and the wet. But it’s Thursday night and the weekend’s here, time to kick back with some wine and some beer. Taking my boss, we search for a pub that pours a good pint and serves decent grub. Well, there was only one place that would fit the bill, that pink house known as The Watermill. Greeted by Kelly with a welcoming smile and shown to our table in just a short while.
There was Kasia our waitress with pure Polish Charm. Taking our orders and keeping us calm. Cocktails with starters and assorted dips, whilst I ordered my mains of hot steak and chips. As the sun came out briefly like the daffodils of spring, we were then joined by Isobel a lovely, sweet thing. Oh, what a treat for dear Sam and me, first-class service and hospitality. This pub is blessed with the most perfect view.
Now it’s Box Hill or bust for The Surrey Rocks Crew.... The Watermill 10/10,” says Matt Fielder (on his review experience)
IN SUMMARY
Hats off to the chef and the creators of this amazing menu, which also consists of Burgers, Pizzas, Salads, Fish & Chips and what looks like the most delicious Sunday Roasts. The Watermill are open from 10am Monday to Friday & 9am Saturday – Sunday till midnight. They also do private hire if you are looking for somewhere to host an event or birthday party. Dogs are welcome too! There are bowls of water and biscuits laid out for your furry friend.
As well as the food and ambience being standout...a special mention has to go to their amazing staff. Kelly, was an absolute delight as was newbie Isobel, it made our dining experience that much more special and enjoyable. And Daisy is an absolute legend! There is also a mother and daughter team that work here, Lauren and Paula. One is an author! It’s a joy to visit a restaurant that has such a good team behind it and you can tell it’s a passion not just a job for The Watermill staff – and that really shone through. Top marks The Watermill, we’ll be back soon, for sure!

PETE’S FISH & CHIPS
We were blown away by our recent visit to Pete’s Fish & Chips, the latest and greatest food vendor at Surrey’s premier food hall, Epsom Social.
Pete’s Fish & Chips opened to fanfare on Good Friday on the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend and has been ‘talk of the town’ since. It has the most impressive menu; the finest and freshest fish, amazing hand cut chips, homemade sauces, chicken and halloumi dishes and sensational sides.
Plus, the expertise behind its launch includes hospitality magnate, Peter Farrell and chef Javier Duarte from top Mayfair restaurants. The duo have excelled themselves here!
STARTING OFF SUPERBLY
We opted for the ‘Southern Fried Chicken Goujons’, which came with the most delicious dip; a smoky chipotle mayo which really tingled the tastebuds. The chicken was so succulent too, and the seasoned batter was light and crisp – overall a superb dish.

Next up we went for the ‘Loaded Halloumi Fries with Yoghurt Dressing, Pomegranate, Za’atar and Coriander’. The Halloumi was so delicious, and the flavours of the Coriander and Za’atar suited it perfectly. The Pomegranate was an excellent touch too and we loved the Yoghurt Dressing which was plentiful so no need to ask for extra. It was a beautifully presented Starter with so much colour, almost too good to eat. Although of course we did, devouring it all! It was seriously tasty.
MASTERFUL MAINS
And now onto Mains, and we were spoilt for choice. There is Fish Bites, Beer Battered Fish and Chips (Haddock or Cod) and Fish, Halloumi or Chicken Burgers, all served with their signature hand cut, double cooked chips.
We decided, on the advice of Javier & Pete, to go for the ‘Fish Burger’ which was the most succulent cod fillet, fresh that morning from their local suppliers - which flaked away perfectly on the touch of our fork, beautifully beer battered and served in a toasted brioche bun with shredded iceberg lettuce, chipotle

mayo and the tastiest homemade tartar sauce…EVER!
We quizzed Javier on this and found out the list of ingredients for this tasty tartar recipe. Mayonnaise, capers, dill, chives, tarragon, lemon, salt and pepper (oh and a dash of water!) it really was sublime and set off the whole dish.
Then we tried the traditional ‘Fish & Chips’ – the portion of cod was large but not too overbearing and the fish was cooked perfectly; moist, and fell away in chunks as we cut into it.
It was good to hear that Pete’s Fish & Chips use only the best local fish suppliers too. They deliver their fish daily to ensure quality and freshness.
And the light, crispy beer battered coating was cooked to perfection. Golden Brown just how it should be and not greasy at all.
Another huge plus was the chips. Handcut from potatoes fresh everyday and cooked twice with their skin on – they were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. They had much more flavour than any normal chip shop chip, and again there was hardly any, if any, grease.
As a fan of Fish & Chips on a monthly basis I don’t think I could revert back to the local Fish & Chip shop anymore. I would simply ask, “Where’s my tartar sauce, chipotle mayo, delicious fish, brioche bun and freshly cut chips?!”
Pete’s Fish & Chips, you have excelled yourself! We can’t wait to come back for more. This is the tastiest Fish & Chips we have had so far.
DELICIOUS DESSERT
Keeping it simple, Chocolate Brownies are the dessert “catch of the day” at Pete’s Fish & Chips! If you have room, that is! Homemade, served warm with your choice of vanilla ice-cream or cream - they are simply divine!

In today's fashion landscape, sustainability isn't just a buzzword – it's a necessity. As consumers increasingly demand transparency and ethical practices from brands, the concept of a sustainable wardrobe has become more prominent than ever. But where do you start when it comes to curating a closet that's both stylish and eco-friendly? To get you started, no matter where you are on this journey, here are 5 practical tips to help you navigate the world of sustainable fashion with ease.
SUSTAINABLE STYLE
1. INVEST IN TIMELESS PIECES
One of the keys to building a sustainable wardrobe is to prioritise quality over quantity. Instead of constantly chasing fast fashion trends that come and go weekly, opt for timeless pieces that will withstand the test of time. Look for well-made garments crafted from durable, eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, linen, or TENCEL.
If you love to follow trends, choose pieces with range that can be used in a variety of ways with simple additions from a preloved shop or friend's wardrobe to help you give a nod to your favourite looks:
• Crisp White Shirt: A versatile staple that can be dressed up or down for any occasion. Look for one with either a tailored fit or else oversized for a cool and slouchy, Parisian appeal. Choose high-quality fabric that will retain its shape and brightness over time.
• Tailored Blazer: A well-fitted blazer instantly elevates any outfit, but a man's blazer worn oversized with the sleeves rolled up can also add a knock-out punch. Choose a timeless silhouette in a neutral colour such as black, navy, or charcoal grey for maximum versatility, though monochrome mini-plaid can also work well!
• Little Black Dress (LBD): Coco Chanel famously declared that every woman should own a little black dress, and for good reason. A simple, elegant LBD is a wardrobe essential that never goes out of style. Opt for a silhouette that flatters your figure and can be easily accessorised for various occasions. Remember, a strappy silk slip is great either as the main event or for layering and can flatter every figure.
• Dark Wash Denim Jeans: A pair of dark wash denim jeans is a wardrobe workhorse that can be worn year-round. Whilst '70s flares are currently on trend, choose a silhouette that you will get the most wear from over the years - not just this week! Try a Mom, straight leg or slim fit with minimal distressing for a timeless look that pairs well with everything. A vintage, oversized denim jacket is also ideal as we come into spring and summer.
• Leather Jacket: Whether it's a classic moto, a tailored blazerinspired design or an oversized style, a leather jacket adds instant edge to any outfit. Invest in high-quality leather in a versatile colour like black or brown. It will only get better with age and to prove it, you can also find some fabulous preloved vintage versions online and in stores!
SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 33 135
2.
EMBRACE
SECONDHAND SHOPPING
Speaking of pre-loved, they do say that one person's trash is another person's treasure – and nowhere is this more evident than in the world of secondhand shopping. Explore charity shops, vintage markets and online resale platforms to uncover unique pre-loved pieces that add character to your wardrobe while reducing waste. Not only is secondhand shopping budget-friendly, but it also helps to extend the lifespan of clothing items that might otherwise end up in landfills.
When shopping preloved, it can be very easy to buy everything that catches your eye, but remember, the most sustainable closet is one which is 'shopped' from often and added too very little. Before buying every bargain you spot, consider how you will wear it and whether it will get worn 30+ times!
3. CHOOSE ETHICAL AND TRANSPARENT BRANDS
When purchasing new clothing, do your research to support brands that prioritise ethical production practices and transparency in their supply chains. Look for certifications such as Fair Trade, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), or B Corp status, which indicate a commitment to social and environmental responsibility. By voting with your wallet, you can encourage positive change within the fashion industry. Also check out the Good On You app, Fashion Revolution's Transparency Index and ReMake's accountability report.
4. PRACTICE MINDFUL CONSUMPTION AND CARE
For example, consider the fabric it is made from as some have a better life span that others. A jumper made of a synthetic material such as polyester, which is partially derived from petroleum, might look beautiful in the shop but will likely bobble after one wash and soon end up donated but unsellable, or in landfill. Also bear in mind that looser weave will bobble more quickly, (you never hear of jeans bobbling). Instead, choose pure natural fabrics, like wool and cotton instead.
Additionally, find ways to extend the lifespan of your clothing through proper care, repair, and up-cycling. Try and avoid tumble drying your clothes and seek out businesses like SOJO which offers door-to-door clothing alterations and repairs, helping you get as much life out of your pieces as possible.
5. SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS
Keep an eye out for innovative technologies and practices that are revolutionising the fashion industry. From biodegradable textiles to closedloop manufacturing processes, there are countless advancements being made to minimise the environmental impact of clothing production. By supporting brands that embrace these innovations, you can contribute to a more sustainable future for fashion.
CALL TO ACTION: JOIN THE SUSTAINABLE FASHION MOVEMENT
Before making a purchase, ask yourself whether you truly need the item and consider its long-term value. Adopting a more mindful approach to consumption can help curb impulse buys and reduce unnecessary waste.
As conscientious consumers, each of us has the power to shape the future of fashion. No matter where you are on your journey, by incorporating these practical tips into your lifestyle, you can take meaningful steps towards building a wardrobe that reflects your values and supports a more sustainable industry. Together, let's embrace the beauty of ecofriendly fashion and inspire others to join us on this journey towards a brighter, greener future.

A signature suit for such occasions would typically feature sharp tailoring, perhaps in a classic colour like charcoal or navy blue.
To add a touch of personality, you could opt for subtle yet statement accessories, like a bold tie or pocket square, or even a stylish lapel pin.
The key is to strike a balance between elegance and individuality while keeping in mind the formality of the event.
We highly recommend you visit and take a look at our “Mix & Match” signature stylist enquiring form online to help with this.

HELPING LONELY AND PEOPLE ON OUR
One of the charities we have chosen to support for the Surrey Awards 2024 is The Meeting Room. It provides drop-in centres and invaluable help for homeless, vulnerable and socially isolated people in our community, of which there are many. Unseen and largely unnoticed, they can remain unsupported despite the best intentions of our local authorities and other specialist charities.
As one of the Meeting Room clients
- Jason, 52 – said recently: “The Meeting Room helped me out of a very dark place. I’ve met friends who understand; I have somewhere safe to be, and kind people to help me”
Paul, chairman of trustees, explains: “The Meeting Room drop-ins are often the first port of call – and an ongoing community – for those who find themselves homeless, suffering with loneliness or social exclusion, or struggling with mental health problems, neurodiversity, poverty or addiction

issues. A place just to ‘be’ and to get help, to be respected, where you’re not judged and can find the friendly company, signposting and support you need. It’s a simple concept but crucial for so many people and never more so than in the current social climate”
Our clients come from all walks of life and vary in age and in terms of their
individual challenges. Here’s just three examples of many of the (*names have been changed*)
Leslie is a middleaged lady with a learning disability, deemed to have capacity but very vulnerable. She has issues with drugs and alcohol addiction and

was often – sometimes nightly –being coerced into casual prostitution. Her money was being taken by her ‘friends’ as soon as her benefit payments were made. We have worked to support her, liaise with her bank to stop unauthorised withdrawals and with her housing provider to improve security and stop unwelcome visitors. Just as importantly, she has been welcomed into and supported by The Meeting Room community, where she feels safe and can enjoy healthy relationships, healthy food and a feeling of belonging.
Toby is a young man suffering from PTSD from his time in the armed forces. He lives alone and has ongoing health issues which make it difficult to find work. He has become a much-loved member of the Meeting Room family, he now assists in food prep for us and his selfesteem and mental health is much better. But when he’s going through a bad time we are here for him.
Chris is a single man with autism living on his own with no family nearby or any friends. He has mental health issues and a serious hoarding issue which puts his safety at risk. We have sensitively helped clear his home on
several occasions and accompanied him to medical appointments when he’s been too anxious to attend on his own. He loves to come for lunch and often takes some donated food home with him.
Lisa, head of client services, tells this story: “A longterm and very regular client of ours recently died. She’d had problems with obesity and with hoarding as well as social exclusion. After her death, we received a message from her son who we’d never met. He wrote ‘My mother was someone who found it hard to socialise in the usual ways. The Meeting Room gave her a richer life and she was so happy that she had found a community to which she could be a part of’
Several of our clients, our staff and one of our trustees attended her funeral and I think this sums up why we’re here and how we feel about our clients. We listen, we care and we encourage the group to support each other. We’re a family”
Gayle, client support manager, adds: “I’ve been working with The Meeting Room clients for many years and it never fails to amaze me how many people need our help

and how much we can help them, simply by welcoming them into our group, listening not judging, providing them with a hot home-cooked meal, and having the skills and contacts to make things better for them. Some of our clients have been coming to us for years, others might only be with us for a short time while they are in crisis, but everyone is welcome and everyone benefits. including us. Our founder Graham Peddie, who sadly died in 2021, believed in helping the most vulnerable in society – no questions asked – and that’s what we strive to do.”
The Meeting Room Charity has a small group of passionate volunteers, who attend our drop-ins to chat to clients, organize activities, come on walks or cook lunches and puddings. Long-standing cook Mary Aegis explains why she enjoys volunteering: “I love cooking for The Meeting Room. The joy on the faces of everyone as they tuck into a home-cooked lunch around the table is priceless! And it’s great that I can choose my days to suit
my diary – and cook everything in advance in my own kitchen”
THE MEETING ROOM CHARITY
• Meets weekly at Leatherhead Football Club, Ashtead Baptist Church & Kings Church Epsom
• Provides a hot, home-cooked, two-course lunch and limitless hot drinks and biscuits at every drop-in
• Provides help with counselling, benefits, personal and health issues, finance, food and accommodation challenges
• Offers activities both at the drop-ins – games, quizzes and crafting - and out and about – theatre trips, walks, table tennis, camping/ barge breaks and visits to London and the sea-side. Christmas parties, birthday celebrations and summer BBQs are regular events in the calendar.
• Works closely with Leatherhead Start night hostel, the Community Fridge and Foodbank, Mary Francis mental health charity, MVDC, Surrey County Council and all our local churches
The charity relies solely on donations, grants and volunteer support. We need regular help to keep us going and to meet our goals of helping more people and helping people more. Please give generously tonight or visit our website www.themeetingroom.org.uk to see how you can support us in the future.

Your may Astrology Forecast from Pia Louisa may 2024 Hot Stars!
Aries
21 MAR – 20 APR
Are you allowing your creativity to shine, Aries? You seem to be neglecting a rather important side to yourself at the moment, but don’t fret, as May sees you being more creative than ever! Take some me-time and get back to doing the activities that lets your creative soul run free. You are someone who doesn’t like to be controlled, therefore taking orders from someone in a power of authority doesn’t sit right with you. Sometimes challenging their views is important and making sure your voice is heard. Only you can control your life. As a compassionate person, seeing others in pain affects you deeply. Take care of as many people as you are able to, but remember that you can’t save everyone. Some people have to save themselves.
Taurus
21 APR – 20 MAY
Your beliefs are very important to you Taurus, whatever they may be. Stay true to yourself and don’t let others tell you that you are wrong. This is your life, and you should live it the way you desire. Furthermore, May could see you feeling ‘stuck’ in your life. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s actually wonderful! Feeling this way means that you will finally shake some things up and start a brand-new journey in a new direction. However, make sure not to push yourself too hard, as you have a tendency to go too fast and eventually find yourself exhausted. It’s okay to take breaks whenever you need to. Listen to your body and mind, and take it from there.
Gemini
22 MAY – 21 JUNE
You are about to begin a new adventure, Gemini. Right now, you may be unaware of what an exciting journey you are about to go on, but it’s not long now! You don’t need much on this journey, just a positive attitude and an open mind. Furthermore, you have an abundance of love in your life right now. It can be easy to forget, but there are so many people who love you just for being yourself. Cultivate those relationships and let their love wash through you when times seem tough. Finally, a new idea has come to you out of the blue. Your creativity is at its peak, and now you must ask yourself how you’re going to use it. Will you bring this new idea to fruition, or would you prefer someone else to take the reigns?
Cancer
22 JUNE – 23 JULY
Are you allowing your clear vision to take the lead, Cancerian? You know what you want your future to look like, so don’t be afraid to act on it. Don’t let others influence you, only you know what’s best for your life. However, you naturally have a scattered energy, making it difficult for you to concentrate. This is never going to be an easy one for you to solve, but trying to stay as organised as you can, will help. Write up a plan and try your best to stick to it. Finally, you may feel as though you have a victim mentality right now, as you think people are out to hurt you. This is not the case. We all go through ups and downs but remember to have faith that the future can always get better.
24 JULY – 23 AUG
If you are feeling disconnected from your intuition, Leo, it may be best to stop listening to the opinions of others for a while and get back to listening to yourself. Bring your own voice back into the mix. You are just as important as anyone else. Furthermore, you may need some emotional healing this month, as you’ve been through some tough times recently. Spending time with yourself is your path to healing. Solitude isn’t always a bad idea. Finally, you have beautiful and blissful relationships in your life to be grateful for. May is a time to enjoy being with the people who bring you joy (once you feel ready to socialise again). You truly have wonderful people in your life.
Virgo
24 AUG – SEPT 3
It seems you have plans that have faced unexpected delays and obstacles recently, Virgo. You may be waiting on others to complete their tasks before you can step in. If you can, add extra time to your project to make up for external problems you don’t have control over. May sees a past addiction coming out of the shadows. Whether this is to a person, or a thing, remember that you gave it up for a reason. Don’t let yourself fall back into unhealthy habits. Finally, there has been sorrow in your life recently which has taken its toll on you emotionally. Let yourself recuperate and get back to your natural state. It’s okay to let things affect you, as you will bounce back stronger than ever.
Leo

Libra
24 SEPT – 23 OCT
Justice is extremely important to you Libra, and May sees you fighting for those who need your help. You are able to use your voice in a way that actually makes a difference. Keep going and know that others appreciate all that you do for them. Furthermore, a new creative project/venture is about to keep you very busy! This will be all about your career and will take you many steps closer to where you want to be. Your dreams are about to turn into a reality. Finally, you have a very pure spirit, as you always want the best for others. You have infinite wisdom that your loved ones thank you for. Remember how loving you are, especially when fighting for others causes you to feel negative towards the world.
SCORPIO
24 OCT – 22 NOV
Are you happy, Scorpio? This is a question people get asked many times throughout their life, but the real question should be, are you happy right now? It’s good to remember, we all go through days of feeling over the moon and joyous about life, and we also have days where we feel hopeless and sad, however, the important days are those when we feel comfortable and content with our lives, as they are the most common. Furthermore, night time seems to be the worst time for your stress and anxiety Scorpio. You may have even had some nightmares recently. Negative thoughts are weighing heavily on your mind, and it is now time to work through them, however long it takes. Finally, you are working towards financial security right now, which is going extremely well.
Sagittarius
23 NOV – 21 DEC
Has there been deception in your life, Sagittarius? It seems someone you know is trying to convince you of something that is not true. Do some digging before you make any accusations but remember to follow your intuition. Furthermore, you may have been told at some point that you have an overactive imagination. This is not true. As a Sagittarius, you need a good imagination in order to get through the tough, sad, and even boring aspects of life. Finally, the first half of the year has been lacking enough playfulness for you, but this is all about to change. May is going to be a month of play for you! Get ready, because the fun times are just beginning.
Capricorn
22 DEC – 20 JAN
It seems you are facing a creative block at the moment Cap, making it hard to express yourself. You are caught up in your worries and are forgetting to live for the present. Don’t worry about what others think, just live your life for you and nothing will stop your happiness. Furthermore, a sudden change is going to shake up your life in May. This is for the better and will leave you wondering why you were worried in the first place. It’s going to happen unexpectedly, so get ready for a great surprise. You are growing as a person in the coming weeks, more than ever. Trust the process and know you are getting closer to having what you want every day. Keep going.
Aquarius
21 JAN – 19 FEB
Self-love is going to be the most important part of May for you, Aquarius. You haven’t given yourself enough appreciation recently, but you can’t move forward in your life without loving who you have been in the past. Take the time to pamper yourself mentally in the coming weeks. Furthermore, you might be feeling as if you have no security or stability right now. You may have experienced many changes; this includes in your job and in your relationship. Even though this may feel unsettling, it is an important transition that you must go through. Once you are done with this transition, you will be reborn into an entirely new person. It might take time, but you will eventually begin a new chapter of your life.
Pisces
20 FEB – 20 MAR
It can be tough to hear, but you may need to apologise to someone you have hurt, Pisces. The more you try to prove you were right, the more challenging the relationship is going to be. This is your time to make amends. Through this reconciliation, you will be able to do some selfhealing and get back to being who you know you are. This argument was the last hurdle. Once you have worked through this, take some time to be kind to yourself and heal your mind and soul. Finally, you are an extremely determined person, one that will get what they want. Use this determination as much as you can in May, as you will need it to get to where you want to be. Trust yourself; nothing is going to stop you!

Kate Staples has dedicated her life to health, fitness, and sports, leaving a lasting impact in each realm she ventures into. A British record holder in pole vaulting, having shattered 42 British records, and also a trailblazer for women in the sport, contributing to its inclusion in the Olympics. As 'Zodiac' on the hit TV show Gladiators she captivated millions of viewers every Saturday for six seasons, showcasing her strength and charisma on a grand stage. Despite facing a life changing injury when a 40ft training session fall on Gladiators left her with a double neck break, Kate Staples refused to be defeated. Following 12 hours surgery, she made a conscious decision to turn her adversity into inspiration for others, stating, "I was determined not to feel sorry for myself and to put my experiences to good use and inspire others."
Fifteen years ago, she joined forces with Olympic legend Daley Thompson to motivate and energise clients to get fit through bootcamps and overseas training holidays, providing a platform for adults to improve their health and overall well-being. Then, whikst trying to get Kate's daughter into a local athletics club, she discoveried there were long waiting lists and people were being turned away, Kate pivoted her focus towards working directly with schools, bringing in expert coaches, many of whom have represented their countries in competitions, to instill lessons in speed, functional fitness and important lifelong skills among children. Kate commented, "The challenges posed by the COVID-19 lockdown and school closures significantly impacted our operations, However, in the past year, the demand for our Breakfast and After School Clubs has surged and the kids are thoroughly enjoying the fun, games, teamwork and camaraderie of the clubs again".
In response to this growing demand, Kate Staples and her team now offer a diverse range of inclusive and fun clubs designed to engage children in enjoyable and exciting ways while promoting fitness and well-being. Working with hundreds of children each week in schools and community centres, Aspire to Greatness is inspiring and fostering a love of physical activity, quality movement and healthy habits from a young age. ❤
"Today's children are the least active generation in history and could be the first to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. I welcome any initiative which encourages more young people to become active. Aspire To Greatness is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get fit, develop skills and to have fun within schools and local communities."
Lord Sebastian Coe, President of the IAAF
"It's more important than ever that children are encouraged to be active, fit and healthy. The wonderful initiative Run, Jump, Throw that Kate and Daley have developed can help safeguard children's fitness and participation in sports".
