Con su muestra Liminal, en el MALBA, logró un récord histórico de visitantes. Este mes, presenta una megainstalación en la Semana del Arte de Miami Beach. “El ilusionista del arte” reflexiona sobre el impacto de una producción creativa sin fronteras.

Entrar al universo pictórico de Pedro Roth es abrir la puerta a los colores encendidos, a personajes que emergen de su mitología personal y quedan plasmados en telas, hojas sueltas y cientos de cuadernos en los que dibuja y escribe sus reflexiones acerca del arte y la sociedad con letra imprenta mayúscula. Y lo hace todos los días. Sin excepción. Por las mañanas, pinta recostado en su cama, con sus lapiceras con tintas de colores.

“Abro los ojos y ya estoy despierto, no es que me tengo que desperezar, pintar en la cama está incorporado a mi vida”, asegura este polifacético fotógrafo, cineasta y artista plástico de 81 años, que siempre lleva un cuaderno consigo para dibujar en algún café.

Todas las paredes de su casa-estudio están cubiertas de obras, suyas y de otros. Pero su mayor archivo tiene que ver con la fotografía, profesión a la que llegó por consejo de su madre. Pedro Roth nació en Hungría el 8 de julio de 1938 y pasó su primera infancia en

Painting in bed is part of my daily routine,” says this versatile photographer, filmmaker and 81-yearold plastic artist, who always carries a notebook with him to draw when sitting in a coffee shop. Every wall of his home-studio is covered with works of his own and those of other artists. But his biggest archive is photography, a profession he got into at his mother’s urging. el gueto de Budapest. Su padre murió en el campo de Auschwitz. En la posguerra partió con su madre primero hacia Rumania y luego a Israel; en 1954, recalaron en la Argentina. Pedro tenía 15 años, no hablaba español. “Ni una palabra, pero como el rumano es lo más parecido al latín, en tres meses hablaba español”, cuenta, y agrega sobre su pasado: “Nunca miro para atrás. Creo que yo vivo en el futuro”.

Cuando se recibió de bachiller ya era fotógrafo. “Mi madre decía que además de tener una carrera yo debía tener un oficio, y me mandaron de aprendiz a lo de un fotógrafo húngaro. Mi primera cámara fue una Kodak Retina, una camarita chiquita de esas que se abrían con un fuelle, y la primera foto que saqué en mi vida fue frente a Aeroparque, en el Club de Pescadores”, recuerda.

Budapest. His father died at Auschwitz. After the war, he and his mother left Budapest, first traveling to Romania and then to Israel. In 1954, they arrived in Argentina.

Pedro was 15 years old at the time, and he didn’t speak Spanish. “[I didn’t speak] a word, but because Romanian is the closest thing to Latin, I could speak Spanish in three months,” he says, adding about his past: “I never look back. I believe I live in the future.” When he received his bachelor’s degree, he was already a photographer.

“My mother said that in addition to having a profession, I should have a trade, and they sent me to study as an apprentice to a Hungarian photographer. My first camera was a Kodak Retina, a small camera with a bellows, and the first photo I took in my life was of the Fishermen’s Club in front of Aeroparque,” he recalls.

Since that first shot, Roth has taken many photographs.

De aquella primera toma a hoy, pasaron muchas fotografías. Como fotoperiodista trabajó en medios como Panorama, Siete Días, Gente, Para Ti, Disney Club, entre otros; luego se especializó como fotógrafo de obras de arte, en los museos Metropolitan y de Arte Moderno (MoMA), y en Sotheby’s, todos en Nueva York. “Tengo más de un millón de negativos, todo lo de Ruth Benzacar, lo de Gutiérrez Saldívar y lo de Jorge Glusberg, desde el Di Tella hasta hoy. Hice 80 libros de artistas, la famosa foto del primer Partenón de Marta Minujín la saqué yo. Y me lo quieren comprar y no quiero venderlo, porque eso le pertenece a la Argentina. No donar, porque tengo hijos y nietos, y no quiero dejarlos sin el patrimonio. Lo que sí voy a hacer es digitalizar el archivo y ponerlo a consideración del mundo, porque es la historia del arte argentino del año 60 hasta ahora. Vamos a buscarle un lugar, también para poner mi colección de obras. Son más de 50 años de trabajo; por suerte, a los 81 todavía tengo memoria, porque si yo no llego a darle un orden, nadie va a saber.

Soy el que conoce todo”, advierte.

Por los años 80, comenzó con los libros de artistas, la primera muestra la realizó con 30 ejemplares en la galería de Sara García Uriburu. “Le dábamos un libro a cada artista, iguales por fuera, por dentro en blanco, y cada uno hacía su obra”, relata. Desde 2012, a partir de su iniciativa, junto con Pedro Cuperman, a través de la editorial Point of Contact de la Universidad de Siracusa llegó a la Feria de Libros de Artistas en MoMA PS1, en Nueva York.

La última edición fue en septiembre de 2019, donde participaron más de 300 stands. “Llevamos más de 60 libros de artistas argentinos todos hechos a mano –solamente a los fotógrafos les permitimos hacer libros impresos–, con todas las dificultades tremendas que significa llevar los libros. Como digo siempre, ‘soy el mecenas más pobre del mundo’, pero todo el tiempo hago cosas por los demás, por los artistas, todos me

By the 1980s, he began working on books of artists. The first one was for the Sara García Uriburu Gallery with a run of 80 copies. “We gave each artist a book. They were the same on the outside, but blank on the inside for each artist to add their work,” he says.
