Healthy Summer Hair They are finally here, those few precious months in the middle of the year that we all love. When it comes to summer hair, it is difficult to avoid the seasonal hazards such as frizz and flyaways. Thankfully the experts at Sassoon are on hand to ensure you are well tressed and holiday ready this season.

Editors’ Letter Letter from the Editorial Team It’s already been a spectacular start to the summer, with the promise of a balmy August ahead. Our buzzwords this issue were Carnival & Colour married with Enthusiasm & Extravagance. We were hugely inspired by our vivid covers this issue, beautifully painted portraits capturing the spirit of summer, courtesy of artist Alea Pinar Du Pre at The Ransom Gallery in Belgravia, a must-see this summer. Speaking of must-sees, it’s important to make hay while the sun shines, and that means making the most of all the outdoor events in and around the Capital. Our ‘What to see, Where to go’ guide is awash with inspirational attractions, and little somethings for the weekend. You might spot me in the crowds at The Red Hook Criterium, London’s adrenaline fuelled cycle event, which will no doubt leave me exhausted simply spectating. If you prefer a slower pace, try an evening (or two) at the Baglioni Hotel, overlooking Kensington Gardens, it boasts the final word on elegance and timeless splendour. We were delighted to be invited to sample the undeniably impressive service in a memorable overnight stay, my only regret was checking out. Finally, if at any point you’re feeling a tad hot and bothered, grab yourself a glass of something cold and a copy of The Riverside Journals and head for a shady spot! Happy reading. Enjoy the issue. Get a head start

To keep your hair from drying out mid-flight, apply one pump of serum through your hair before you board. It will soak into your locks without leaving it greasy, guaranteeing you step off with hair that looks super sleek and glossy.

Moisturise It is essential to pamper your locks with a deep-conditioning treatment at least once a week to keep hair looking healthy and glossy. For a slick summer style on the beach, apply a hydrating conditioner such as Sassoon Professional Intense Restore (£24) to the roots and then comb your hair back off your face, pulling the product down through the length. Ensuring you look effortlessly stylish without sacrificing your hair’s health.

Boutique Shopping in Old Amersham

A

imed at modern women who want easy to wear clothes but not at the expense of style, the store is full to the brim of gorgeous, covetable womenswear brands all curated in the distinctive relaxed IRIS way and all carefully edited with customer knowledge built on 12 years of experience. When IRIS first opened its doors in Queens Park they stocked mainly Danish brands and had a bohemian luxe, ethos. Over the years IRIS has managed to retain this feel, but has grown to include must have brands such as Isabel Marant, Frame Denim, Ulla Johnson, M.i.h Jeans and Masscob, alongside lesser-known, eclectic up and coming designers – giving a real treasure trove feel. Also in-store is the delightful Little Iris collection for kids with mini-me fashion from Wild & Gorgeous, Louise Misha and the ever popular Bob & Blossom along with sumptuous bath and beauty products, lingerie and swimwear and a great denim selection – it really is a one-stop destination for a seasonal wardrobe update, and is brilliant for gifts too. The IRIS story began when founders Sarah Claassen and Annie Pollet met at antenatal classes and became firm friends. With different backgrounds – Sarah in jewellery design and Annie in fashion – they both felt that their local Queens Park area lacked a place for fashionable women to buy stylish wearable clothes without having to make the journey to the centre of London. At the time they both had young children and realised how difficult it was to shop with kids in tow and were determined to create a local fashion destination that didn’t scrimp on style or quality. They were also keen to create something that felt part of the community, which went further than being a retail enterprise. The Queens Park store opened in 2004, followed by the Battersea store two years later and then a store in Chiswick in 2006, lastly opening their gorgeous Amersham boutique in 2014. Founder Annie Pollet says: “The business ethos was very much to target the London village feel – and supply these areas with brilliant fashion brands in a non-intimidating environment with store staff that are very approachable and knowledgeable”. The store in old Amersham was their first foray out of London but the girls felt that it fitted their village profile perfectly with its beautiful high street, village feel and community spirit. Manageress Karen says: “It took a while for people to learn that we were there but now the store is busy, buzzy and people travel from the surrounding areas aware not only of the brilliant brands that we stock but that they can pop in for a chat and retail therapy in a friendly environment. Amersham offers so much and it is the perfect day trip where people can park, shop and eat all in one pretty historical village area perfectly suiting the Iris remit of being your local fashion destination.”

Wedding etiquette is rapidly changing. It is no longer frowned upon to stray away from tradition and experiment with themes. Whether you’re attending a traditional or more eclectic wedding, New & Lingwood has sharp, sartorial advice for the gentleman groom or guest.

Keep it Traditional A formal wedding calls for classic dressing and attention to detail. Opt for a timeless three-piece day suit in navy or grey, or the more formal black tailcoat. Traditional weddings carry a conservative dress code, but that doesn’t mean attention to detail should be lost – to add a spot of colour, opt for New & Lingwood’s mid-calf cotton sock in Sky as your “something blue”. To enhance the colour of your suit, add an immaculately knotted silk tie or pocket square.

Evening Elegance An evening wedding calls for black tie. You may wish to go for a classic black dinner jacket or a dark suit for a sophisticated and elegant look. Don’t forget cufflinks: they are a great way to add a personal touch to your look. New & Lingwood have a themed range for every eventuality or interest, including cars, guitars, skulls, and even Wellington boots. Whatever you do, always remember to shine your shoes to a mirrorfinish… unless, of course, you’re wearing New & Lingwood’s handmade velvet evening slippers.

Summer Days and Warmer Climes

Casual Couples At a more casual wedding, you can skip the suit and wear smart chinos paired with a white or light blue button-down shirt. Opt for less structure and don’t be afraid to experiment with cooler or open-weave fabrics, such as cotton or linen. You can also swap out classic brogues or loafers to try a short lace up boot, like New & Lingwood’s ‘3 Tie Chukka Boots’ in brown suede.

Country Weddings Rustic weddings have become an increasingly popular and less conventional theme over the last few years. It calls for earth toned attire. In Summer, try New & Lingwood’s Layton trousers in olive and pair them with a white shirt and Oxford shoes. Add a bow-tie to complete the look and if it’s a cool day, make sure that you’ve got your New & Lingwood Safari jacket to hand. In Autumn or Winter, opt for New & Lingwood’s boldly coloured checked tweed or soft flannel suits.

Timeless Men’s Style for Weddings

In warmer seasons or climates, you need to choose lighter weight fabrics for comfort. After all, you don’t want to look like you’re overheated and on the verge of collapse in the photos! Choose high-twist, tropical wools or linens, which are specifically made to keep you cool. Be it classic navy or cooler shades, a crisp shirt in white, pale blue, ivory or pink will set it off to perfection. You can skip the tie and add a flourish of colour with an exquisitely designed silk pocket square.

Here are some top tips on how to successfully reinstate period features into contemporary homes:

Do your research Many old properties will have been modified over time. You can find features dating back to different eras in a single home – high ceilings and bay windows in one part and sash windows and smaller rooms in another. The best thing to do is to investigate the main eras of your home, before deciding which features to focus on.

Too much detail can be overkill

Reinstating period features into contemporary homes

Adding period features is akin to choosing art. Focus on features you notice regularly, like reclaimed doors, floors, fireplaces and staircases, to introduce contrast. However, do your best not to get too carried away – too many reinstated features in one room is overkill.

Display features out of context A striking way to display period features in a contemporary setting is to install them out of context. Withhold the urge to reinstate them to a perfect state: you will lose part of the character, and they should blend into, rather than stand out from, the room. The more time-worn your features, the better.

Blend in radiators Modern radiators often look out of place against more traditional décor. It is important to blend radiators with the interior of a room. Heavily adorned ornate radiators can be used to great effect, and are becoming easier to source due to rising popularity.

Add a ceiling rose Reinstating a ceiling rose can return opulence to an older home. If you choose to add a new rose, align it with the centre of the chimney breast rather than the centre of the ceiling. Traditional patterns and simpler designs are on offer, so you can complement the age of your home.

By Jayson Branch, Creative Director, Castrads Pay attention to flooring

Encaustic tiles were a feature of Victorian and Edwardian hallways, often covered by more contemporary floorcoverings. If they’re long gone, buy them new or go for reclaimed tiles instead. Patterned tiles are a sensible alternative answer for a hallway whatever the age of your home because they’re hard wearing, easy to clean, and won’t show marks as the family troops in and out.

Fit a fireplace Fireplaces are often removed in modernised homes, but adding one can restore much period character. Ensure you keep the design you choose in proportion to room height. If your fireplace is going to be more than decorative, have it fitted by a professional so it’s safe.

Restore windows Owners of older homes often replace original wood windows with uPVC designs to be more efficient. However, opting for a glazing style and a wooden frame creates more historic harmony. A wooden window is also an option for newer homes when uPVCs come to the end of their lifespan.

Returning a period house to its former glory can be a lengthy exercise. However, there are simple ways to restore a touch of original character and introduce period charm.

Contemporary Bathroom Mirrors: The Colosseum Family

Colosseum Mirror

J

ust because bathroom mirrors are an essential in any bathroom, it doesn’t mean that they have to be boring. Gone are the days of simple bathroom mirrors, because this year, you are about to take a step further. When it comes to enhance the look of your bathroom, mirrors play an important role as the main focal point of the space, as wonderful accents to any bathroom and also each mirror has a specific use that can be coordinated with different types of bathrooms. The Colosseum Family was inspired in the Coliseum also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, which is an oval amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. Our designer Joaquim Paulo says: “The aim of the Colosseum Family is to add a luxury touch to every bathroom, but it goes beyond that, we want our client to feel and leave a unique experience though the lines and materials”.

Colosseum Mirror A vanity mirror is a bathroom accessory that is generally attached to the wall with a row of lights in the mirror itself. With an elongated shape, the Colosseum mirror has a fusion of modernistic and classical elements depicted in the golden arches which turns this into an exquisite design piece and a perfect accessory for a luxury bathroom.

Colosseum Floor Mirror A floor mirror isn’t just useful for checking all of your reflection, it’s also useful in adding light to your hallway and adding a unique style into your bedroom and master bathroom. The Colosseum floor mirror offers the possibility of rotating the rings into the desired position.

About Alea Pinar Du Pre As an Austrian/Turkish Painter born in Vienna, Alea Pinar Du Pre has been influenced deeply by the artist of Künstlerhaus and Wiener Werkstaette. As a highly talented autodidact she started painting and is now an internationally acclaimed artist exhibiting her work in galleries and at art fairs around the world. Pinar Du Pre is an artist with an immense curiosity in the nature of reality. The insights of quantum mechanics and M theory point to a universe that’s undivided, in which all parts merge and unite in one totality. The ultimate nature of physical reality is not as a collection of separate objects (as it appears), but instead an undivided whole in a dynamic state of flux. Inspired by these findings Pinar Du Pre creates artistic metaphors reflecting this more challenging view of a very new kind of reality. Her work explores the territory between the world ‘out there’ and our very different ‘worlds within’. Building on the synthetic intensity of digital art, her figurative style depicts a familiar but warped daily life. Paying tribute to one of her main influences, Pinar describes her style as “Jugendstil Pop-Art”. But where Pop was stimulated by the iconography of materialism and the mass culture of its time, her vision is more intimate in its subversive intent. Her aim is to help administer a small dose of inner perceptiveness. Looking into and beyond the canvas, she hopes we will find new ways to narrate what we see. Each piece has its own narrative, designed to stimulate the audience to reflect on the blurred playground that bridges the visible and invisible, reality and perception. ‘What is reality?’ is the central theme across the series and in each painting, we glimpse only a fraction, before it escapes. Eclectic history of plywood revealed in new V&A exhibition exploring material that made the modern world

31 the riverside journals

L

ight, strong, affordable and versatile, plywood is the unlikely material behind an eclectic array of groundbreaking designs to be celebrated in a world-first exhibition at the V&A this summer. From the fastest and highest-flying aeroplane of WWII, the de Havilland Mosquito, to the downloadable self assembly WikiHouse, more than 120 objects will be brought together in an exploration of how the often-overlooked product has helped create the modern world. Fragments of layered board have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, but it was the advent of mass production in the 19th century that saw plywood’s adaptability and potential fully exploited. Used to construct everything from a tube to house an experimental elevated railway in 1867 New York to hatboxes, tea chests, surfboards and skateboards, plywood has been embraced by designers, architects and engineers; each successive generation finding ever more innovative ways to shape, mould, cut and fix it. Opening this July, Plywood explores the near-ubiquitous material’s global impact and history from the 1850s to the present day. The exhibition brings together significant new research with new acquisitions and objects that have never before been on public display. It will take visitors through plywood’s many reputational transformations; from a cheap product that was often hidden or maligned for its inferiority to solid timber, to the material prized by midcentury modernists and by today’s flourishing maker movement. Coupling objects drawn from the V&A’s world class furniture, design and architecture collections with significant loans from across the globe, highlights include early experiments in plywood, such as a 1908 book printed during Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod expedition to Antarctica and bound with plywood covers; celebrated pieces by modernist designers such as Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer, Grete Jalk, Robin Day and Charles and Ray Eames; and striking examples of transport design such as 1917 moulded canoe, a 1960s British racing car with plywood chassis, and some of the first ever surf and skateboards. Interspersed throughout the displays are three ‘process’ moments that mark important milestones in the evolution of plywood manufacture: the invention of the rotary veneer cutter in the early 19th century; the advent of moulding techniques that inspired the groundbreaking forms of 1930s modernism; and plywood’s recent dominance as a material for CNC cutting and digital manufacture. In the John Madejski Garden, a cluster of ice skating shelters designed by Patkau Architects will be on display throughout the exhibition. Visitors are invited to take a seat in the structures which are made by bending flexible plywood sheets and attaching them to a timber frame to create sculptural forms. The shelters were originally designed to sit on a frozen river in Winnipeg, Canada and the installation is supported by the American Friends of the V&A. Christopher Wilk, exhibition co-curator and Keeper of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion at the V&A, said: “Plywood is such a common, everyday material that most people barely notice when it is used. One could say that it has been hidden in plain sight. Since Victorian times, it has been one of the most popular and versatile materials used in manufacturing, and by designers and architects. Today it is more popular than ever.” Ruth Wassermann, Head of Design at MADE.COM said: “Plywood as a material has hidden depths. Created to have more strength and reliability than solid wood, its development as a mouldable material has changed furniture design immeasurably through the 20th century, and with current moods around provenance and honesty of material, has now come into its own for its decorative properties. Plywood is integral to the soft wooden curves of Nordic design and features in furniture and home accessories from every design style at MADE.COM.”

ow lucky were we to be invited to stay at the magnificent Baglioni Hotel in the heart of Kensington. Positioned as it is directly opposite Kensington Gardens, this would be one hotel where you would opt for the garden-facing room. We knew as soon as we arrived that we were going to be well looked after, in fact we were treated like royalty and delighted to observe this treatment wasn’t especially for us – this is how they treat everyone at the Baglioni Hotel. We had arrived early enough to have time to relax before our dinner reservation at 8.30pm and enjoy some of the hotel’s fabulous facilities. After checking into The Kensington Suite we went for a stroll – and that was only around our room! I don’t think I have stayed in such a large area in a hotel in London before – and I have been lucky enough to have stayed in a lot of hotels. Our bedroom had a walk-in wardrobe, two balconies overlooking Kensington Gardens and in our bathroom the bath was large enough for even the tallest of clients and the shower could fit a family of four. The room came with a separate lounge area in which to relax with lots of interesting reading material. Each room has a TV but to be honest when you’re blessed with a large balcony, comfortable seating with a table and complimentary gin, whisky or brandy, all you want to do is sit back and relax enjoying the hustle and bustle of London going on below you while you look over onto the beautiful gardens. The hotel boasts an amazing spa and gym where they will tailor make any package for you, so if you wanted your PT to take you for a work out in the gardens instead of the gym this would be accommodated and the staff in the luxury spa will try to facilitate all client requests. The décor throughout the hotel was designed by an Italian and the finishes and furnishing are also Italian, adding to the ambience and general style. The restaurant displays works of art by, yes, Italian artists which are changed regularly. The menu at Brunello Bar and Restaurant is run under the expert hand of resident Chef Alberto Rossetti and each dish is served by staff who absolutely know their food and drink from the prosecco we had on arrival to the tiramisu on departure and everything in between. We had such a lovely Italian meal we went back the following day for lunch with a friend who enjoyed it so much she was going back to tell her partner he had to go, as he’s a bit of a foodie too. When we went to check out and leave the hotel our bags were put in a Maserati which was the mode of transport complimentary to all hotel guests. The Maserati is one of a number of Italian cars available to take guests to their next destination, or in fact at their disposal for the whole of their stay; incidentally they also have a Lamborghini and a Ferrari – to name but a few! Never a truer word spoken, once you check into the Baglioni Hotel you’ll never want to check out, and with rooms starting from £275 per room per night, based on two adults sharing a room on a B&B basis, you can’t afford not to.

The White Oak, Cookham he White Oak opened in the lovely village of Cookham in November 2008 and has a sister ‘Oak’ in Gerrards Cross called The Three Oaks which opened in July 2011. In 2012 The White Oak were delighted to receive their first Michelin Bib Gourmand which has been retained to date. This award champions good food and service at reasonable prices. It also features in the AA Restaurant Guide (2 AA rosettes), The Good Food Guide 2017 and both the Michelin Red and Pub Guides. The seasonal menus are changed regularly and they also offer fantastic Set Menus which are fixed £15 for 2 courses & £19 for 3 for both lunch and dinner – available Monday to Saturday. The White Oak also has excellent à la carte and Sunday lunch menus, children’s menu and bar food. They hold a Steak Club every Monday night (except on Bank Holidays when it’s held on a Tuesday) where all the dry-aged Highland beef steaks are 33% off plus you have the opportunity to BYO (bring your own bottle) for £5 corkage per bottle! Fizz Friday? Don’t mind if I do! Available every Friday from 5-7pm, The White Oak offers a generous 20% off any of their ‘house fizz’: Sylvoz Prosecco Le Colture Brut, Guy de Chassey Grand Cru Brut & the Cremant de Bourgogne Sparkling Rose. We had a very enjoyable evening at The White Oak. Upon arrival, the staff, who are very welcoming, saw to it that we were greeted, served and seated with ease. There are a wide range of drinks to choose from including a cocktail menu and an extensive wine list. I was the designated driver for the evening so my friend chose a Martin Miller gin which was served with Fevertree tonic over ice, strawberries and cracked pepper, a lovely drink for a summer’s evening she tells me and me with my orange juice and soda water, which we enjoyed in the garden while we pondered over the menu. The menus were varied with many meat, fish and vegetarian options as well as a range of side dishes, a set menu and allergy advice. The staff are all attentive and very well informed about the items on the menu and willing to answer any questions. After choosing from the menu we were led to our seats inside the restaurant which had a very relaxed and warm atmosphere with a mixture of diners, family parties, couples or just friends, like ourselves, enjoying an evening out. The decor was beautiful, oak obviously, with fresh flowers on the tables, in the restaurant and even in the toilets. I enjoyed creamy goat’s cheese which was served with truffle toasts, pickled mushrooms and really sweet beetroot while my friend raved about her crispy Squid starter. To follow the Cornish turbot that I chose for my main course was cooked perfectly and served with a delicious crab croquette, crab bisque, samphire and apple and sorrel salad and my friend went fishy too with roasted cod. I also ordered a cheeky portion of triplecooked chips which were really fluffy and crispy. The dessert of peanut and chocolate terrine was my favourite dish, served with strawberries and raspberry sorbet, I could definitely have eaten more of that! We then finished our evening enjoying a relaxing coffee in the bar.

Oven Fried-Chicken Everyone loves fried chicken! This is healthier as you oven roast it, the brine helps keep it moist. 1 leg and 1 thigh of chicken of free-range chicken per person, skin on. For the brine: 2 litres of water, 3 tablespoons of salt, 1 tablespoon of runny honey, a torn bay leaf and a few peppercorns. Submerge the chicken in the brine and place covered in the fridge, for a minimum of 4 hours. Pat the chicken really dry with kitchen roll. For the coating, mix well together: 150g plain flour 1 teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon of powdered vegetable bouillon 1 teaspoon of dried oregano ½ teaspoon of pepper ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper or chilli powder (optional) ½ teaspoon of smoked (preferably) or regular paprika. Pre-heat the oven to 180c. When you have patted dry your chicken, roll in the coating thoroughly, making sure all is covered. Put 1 tablespoon of sunflower or vegetable oil into a roasting tray, and put in the oven for 5 minutes to heat up. Then add the chicken, tossing around in the little bit of hot oil, and roast for 20 minutes. Then raise the temperature to 200c for another 10 minutes, and the skin should be lovely and crisp. Depending on the size of your chicken pieces, cooking times may vary a little, so be sure to pierce it at the thickest part – if the juices run clear, they’re done!

1 small red onion, finely chopped 3 spring onions, finely sliced 1 punnet of cherry tomatoes, cut in half if small 100g each of cooked and blanched fresh sweetcorn 100g freshly podded peas 100g broad beans (double podded, it’s fiddly, but worth it!) 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 clove of garlic, finely crushed A handful of fresh basil leaves, ripped Juice and zest of 1 lime ½ teaspoon of Cajun seasoning 1/2 teaspoon of sugar Salt and pepper to taste Mix together the onion, tomatoes, sweetcorn, peas and broad beans. Then mix together the seasonings, zest, juice oil and garlic and sugar, until the sugar is dissolved. Toss the vegetable mix in the dressing, and then stir through the freshly torn basil.

ith its Michelin star dining, luxurious country house hotel Lucknam Park is the perfect destination for foodies. Not only can you enjoy stunning dishes in the Restaurant Hywel Jones, but you can learn to cook like a professional chef at the eponymous Cookery School, nestled within the 500-acre estate, just a short stroll from the 5-star hotel and spa. I joined eight other ‘students’ to learn how to create delicious canapés under the expert tuition of Head Chef Ben Taylor, who’s led the Cookery School for the past four years. We meet the man himself over coffee and Danish pastries and his friendly and down-to-earth approach immediately puts everyone at ease. Creating beautiful food is clearly what drives this award-winning chef and he is passionate about inspiring others to do the same – whatever their age or abilities. Then, dressed in our chefs jackets and clutching our trusty recipe folders, the process of making our canapés begins – each time, gathering round for a practical demonstration by Ben, before it’s our turn to master the culinary skills and techniques to produce exquisite hors d’oeuvres. The airy, hi-tech kitchen has been recently revamped with all the equipment required by budding chefs. Ben has created dozens of cookery courses to suit every taste – from learning how to cook fish and shellfish, to mastering authentic Thai or Spanish classics and designing the ‘perfect’ dinner party. Despite there being numerous ovens, sinks and equipment, it feels like a domestic kitchen, which helps to create a relaxing and informal mood. Trainee chef Freddie, (on loan for the day from the hotel’s fine-dining kitchen), is also on hand to lay out ingredients and clear away, which helps things run smoothly and efficiently. It is clear safety is a top priority, as Ben shows us how to use the correct knives for each task and teaches some valuable and impressive chopping skills. Safety is also why our moreish Mushroom and Truffle Arancinis are deep-fried by another chef in the Cookery School’s second kitchen, tucked away in the charming cottage. Working our way through the recipes, we learn how to make delicious small bites using exciting flavour combinations – including Black Olive Muffins and Crab, Mango and Avocado Salsa – and Ben’s infectious enthusiasm makes the process fun as he flits between each student, sharing a joke, answering questions and imparting top tips on techniques, flavours and the art of presentation. This hands-on course ends with a tasty lunch around the kitchen’s communal table, where the Class of 2017 get the chance to sample our efforts and chat over a well-deserved glass of wine. Buoyed with new confidence, we leave vowing to impress friends with a repertoire of canapés for the summer party season and grateful to Ben for helping take our culinary skills to the next level.

ed Red Wine is the product of a partnership between UB40 and Eminent Life, who have created a special wine to celebrate Britain’s biggest reggae legend’s forthcoming tour for Summer 2017 and new album “Unplugged”. A classic blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes, this red, red wine is an archetypal claret – a deep colour with plenty of warm blackberry flavours and a long and elegant finish. Very drinkable. It takes a while to open out, so either decant it or open the bottle an hour before you want to drink it and use up the time by listening to Ali, Astro and Mickey’s top hits. The band’s much anticipated return to the music scene coincides with the launch of their ‘Red Red Wine’ and hails their new era of music and beverage ventures. The Tour presents an excellent opportunity to see UB40 – featuring Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue with their fantastic 8-piece reggae band at their best as they bring their enthusiasm, passion and winning combination of chilled and upbeat tracks to the centre stage. They will be joined by special guests Level 42, also performing a host of their greatest hits, along with The Original Wailers featuring Al Anderson and introducing Raging Fyah. For tour dates http://ub40.org/ub40_live/ The wine is available from Eminent Life (www.eminent-life.com), a company dedicated to celebrating excellence in music and the arts by creating limited-edition products, selected and manufactured to the very highest standards. The wine retails at £28.50 and Riverside Journals have one bottle (signed by the band) to give away, along with a copy of their album “Unplugged”. The Ivy Marlow Garden It was truly both a treat and a pleasure to be invited to the newly opened Ivy Marlow Garden restaurant in the heart of Marlow on the High Street.

W

44 the riverside journals

alking into a small reception area with the restaurant hidden away behind two double doors, we were greeted by exceptionally polite and very well dressed staff and escorted by one of the managers to a curved seating area and a table looking across to the central part of the restaurant. Our first impressions: the décor and the furnishings were very appealing with colourful mosaic-type pictures across the far walls, in bright colours. We also looked onto the cocktail bar, with a seated area that is very endearing for customers and situated towards the front of the restaurant. One of the restaurant managers informed us that the restaurant serves 150 covers and what makes it quite lovely is that the first main seated area leads into a large conservatory-type room with a roof that can be opened up together with the doors on a lovely summer’s day or evening. This leads into a fine walled garden with adequate seating, ornamental statues and planted areas – this was unusually charming to find in a busy high street establishment and a pact was made that when we visit again we would really like to dine outside. Our waiting staff were exceptional and nothing was too much trouble. The dress code was smart and some of the waitresses wore a shirt and tie and trouser suit and another waitress wore a stunning red fitted dress (first appearances always count!). After much deliberation we made our choices and I chose the Soft Goat’s Cheese Salad (£6.50) and my friend opted for the Prawn Cocktail (£9.75). Being one of her favourite starters, she said it was one of the best that she had eaten, and my Goat’s Cheese Salad was fresh with caramelized hazelnuts, Belgian endive, mixed grapes and picked herbs – a great choice. Excited about our main dishes I had picked the Crab Linguine (£15.95) pasta and courgette linguine with Devon crab, chilli, smoked garlic, lemon and rocket and I added some extra chilli flakes and oil (as a red hot chilli type of girl!). My friend chose the Aromatic Duck Curry (£14.75). This, I must say, looked absolutely delicious, fragrant coconut duck curry with lemongrass, lime, chilli, roasted cashews and steamed jasmine rice and she said it was absolutely scrumptious and allowed me to try. The contrasting flavours were amazing. We complemented our meal with a bottle of the house Prosecco. It was then time for dessert. Well, with not much room left (but rude not to try) after much deliberating we decided to share the Chocolate Bombe (£8.50) on the waitress’s recommendation; a melting chocolate bombe with milk foam, vanilla ice cream and honeycomb centre with hot salted caramel sauce. It was incredible and was the perfect finish to a fabulous meal. In summary, this delightful and sophisticated dining establishment in the heart of Marlow comes extremely highly recommended, with a well-priced menu and a very relaxed environment, serving all day menus to businesses and residents along with visitors to the charming town. What more can one want? You can secure your booking online at: https://theivymarlowgarden.com/ or phone 01628 902 777 The only thing really left to say is that we will surely be visiting again…

Ellis

Delicate and endlessly romantic The 2017 Collection leads with softly silhouetted and exquisitely embellished designs. With a focus on expertly crafted details that accent the contemporary shapes, the feel is modern ethereal. We have continued to refine our signature shape, with soft, dreamy lines layered above gifted construction – flattering every bride’s individual shape. This collection sees the introduction of new Mikado’s and organza’s, overlaying the softest tulles and laces to fashion a three-dimensional look that is enhanced by its intricacy. Special attention has been paid to laces this season: custom embroidered, handcrafted and woven with subtle metallic threading that airily catches the light – a sheen that is reflected through the rest of the collection.

Bridal designer Caroline Castigliano talks us through next year’s biggest bridal trends. Simple is the big word in bridal now. Beautifully cut clean dresses in stunning fabrics. Crepes and Mikado are both on trend. We will continue to see a lot of lace appliqué on gowns with a range of laces. Guipure will still be huge in 2018, there will also be corded laces and beaded Chantilly. Off the shoulder styles are important and the use of layering fabrics with tulles and lace is key for next year. Colours of soft mocha and pale water wash nudes will be seen along with other pale soft water colours.

48 the riverside journals

Day to night is an important trend that will stay with us. Brides really like to arrive with a look for the day and the ceremony that can transform to something completely different for the evening. A bride may decide to choose a gown with a detachable lace top with a high neck and buttons down the back and long sleeves looking very conservative but contemporary and, in the evening, she may remove the top to find a revealing gown that she then adds a stunning jewelled belt, earrings and a bracelet and now she has a red carpet glamorous look. All Caroline Castigliano dresses are handcrafted in the United Kingdom. All dresses ordered from the Knightsbridge boutique are Made-toMeasure to ensure a perfect fit. The 2017 palette is defined by sophisticated warm tones: an understated mix of antique gold, blossom pink and warm ivories offer an enchanting alternative to the classic ivory wedding dress. These colours perfectly highlight the detail of the lace, divinely complementing both elements. For 2017, the beauty is in the detail. We adore the confidence of the Ellis bride. Modern and creative, she understands that she is unique, and desires and deserves a dress to reflect her. Following the success of our customisable separates, we understand that our Bride looks for designs that are beautifully made and style-led: quintessentially her. We create for her moment. Her style is her essence: luxe femininity that is effortlessly individual.

Sassi Holford

Lingerie and corsetry references are translated into exquisite underpinnings…their graphic lines sitting beautifully under layers of delicately embroidered tulle and lace. Textural georgette and ethereal tulle is worked back with rich floral embroideries, whilst fine lace is embellished with graphic jewel embellished ribbons that contour the silhouette. An impeccably cut ivory tux and a lace trimmed silk satin jumpsuit offer a chic and contemporary wedding dress alternative to the modern Wakeley Bride.

Recently celebrating her 35th year in bridal, Sassi Holford has always made brides dreams a reality by creating timeless wedding gowns. Exquisite lines and sumptuous fabrics echo the bride’s own style, and nothing is spared in the structure and the detail to provide the renowned Sassi Holford cut and fit. All the gowns are designed and handmade in Sassi’s studios, located in the South West of England. Launched earlier this year, the Sassi Holford 2018 Collection features everything from quintessential lace to fashionable bridal jumpsuits. Sassi Holford wedding gowns are available at retailers around the globe - see her website for more information. As well as the successful launch of the 2018 Bridal Collection, Sassi Holford has this year taken the occasion wear market by storm. Her pieces are perfect for every event, from a day at the polo to a gala dinner. Sassi’s designs have been favored by the likes of Helen Mirren, Darcey Bussell and Natalie Rushdie to name a few and the collection is exclusively available at Sassi’s London flagship store in Chelsea.

15 Minutes with Neil Duttson

eil Duttson is a leading diamond and jewellery authority offering clients a personalised bespoke gem buying service, combining expertise and integrity with sophisticated and stylish design to create a totally unique gem buying experience.

What is the number one rule when buying an engagement ring? This will vary for everyone due to different tastes: however, my thoughts are as follows – try and establish your future fiancé’s tastes and choose or have made a ring that will complement that, i.e. if she wears or likes the 1920’s or 30’s eras then perhaps look at diamond cuts such as Square Emerald cut or Emerald cut either on their own or with baguettes. The word is ‘Research!’

We hear all about coloured stones, what is the truth when it comes to their rarity? Coloured diamonds if sourced correctly can be an amazing ‘Store of wealth’. I personally source the ‘beyond rare’ coloured diamonds by appointment for several clients. Put it this way, there are only 30 Red diamonds on the planet, I have owned two of them they are now owned by some very lucky people as the financial growth of these diamonds has increased immensely. Pink diamonds (Argyle mine especially) are some of the rarest diamonds in the world. The Argyle mine is closing in 2021 so the maths is good as these diamonds are seeing a huge upside year on year and will only increase in value as the closing of the mine gets closer. There are some rules here though when sourcing pinks: Fancy intense and Vivid are the only stones to invest in and when it comes to Argyle diamonds then 1p or 1pp – 5p or 5pp is where one’s money should be. Fancy intense and Vivid Yellow diamonds are also very popular set in jewellery but larger, rarer stones are also a good investment. Any concerns then call me as we own an inventory that will make Bond Street jealous!!

Does size always matter? Absolutely Not, but some women will disagree! A well cut fiery diamond which is small often looks better than a large diamond as it’s often more chic and understated than a huge rock that often makes the wearer self conscious.

Are there cultural differences when selecting an engagement ring? Do young ladies from France and England prefer different designs? A The only differences I have come across in my career is from the ‘Swedes’ who present a wedding band style ring as an engagement ring and what we call an engagement ring on their wedding day. B The French have similar tastes to the English which I think is due to well known fashion houses creating French designs to a UK market.

What are the advantages of designing something from scratch rather than using a traditional retailer? I believe that putting your own stamp on an engagement ring is such a lovely thing to do – it creates history, it forms a journey and is normally less expensive than buying over the counter. Other than that one can add extras to the ring that you would not be able to do when buying from a shop.

Reward yourself on a trip to New York

N

Travel more for less money with this smart scheme, writes Ruth Brindle

ew York is a fantastic, exciting and vibrant destination, but because there is just so much to do here plus a bewildering choice of accommodation it’s hard to choose the best deals. But I’ve learnt about a hotel loyalty scheme that has been hailed as one of the best in the industry. Wyndham Rewards was launched in 2015 and upgraded in 2016 and I found out more on a recent trip to the city. Hotels to suit any budget and style

Wyndham Garden at 93 Bowery is in vibrant Chinatown (from £153 per room) and is a good base. Floor to ceiling windows give panoramic views of the skyline and discovering the amazing food shops nearby is fun. Another easy walk away is the world-famous Katz’s Deli (picture Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal’s memorable scene in When Harry Met Sally). The hotel is one block from Little Italy and two blocks from trendy SoHo for great shopping. But if it’s a touch of history you want in the very heart of Midtown there’s the newly-refurbished New Yorker (from £137). JFK and Muhammad Ali stayed here and I was impressed by the spacious, luxurious rooms and the Art Deco style of the building itself, which has two restaurants and a 24-hour gym and business centre. Also in Midtown is The TRYP by Wyndham Times Square South (from £163) with Broadway and Madison Square Garden on the doorstep. It has a European feel, is really cool and modern with big work/eat tables, free WiFi and tapas and cocktails on offer at the Gastro Bar. The guest rooms include some of the biggest in the city (455 sq ft) to sleep up to eight people. But for good value go outside Manhattan to the new Wyndham Garden Long Island City Manhattan View (from £111) in the district of Queens. This is an excellent option with fast travel links into the heart of the city plus spectacular views of the skyline across the East River. Long Island City is the hottest area to visit right now. Enjoy the views from the riverside Gantry Park, eat at the hip restaurants and bars such as Dutch Kills or visit the Museum of Modern Art’s PS1 gallery and The Noguchi Museum.

Facts With Wyndham Rewards earn a minimum of 1,000 points for every qualified stay and 15,000 points earns a free night’s stay at Wyndham hotels across the globe, with no dates excluded. At 25 destinations you can take advantage of extra rewards that include a pizza tour of New York, indoor skydiving in Orlando or a cooking class in Shanghai. Try Toronto for a long weekend Ruth Brindle explores Canada’s surprising city

I

f you thought New York was your only choice for a short transatlantic hop to shop ’til you drop and enjoy an exciting city break, think again – Toronto should now be on your list. It ticks the same boxes. You can fly here in just over eight hours (under seven hours on the way back), it’s a very diverse and vibrant city where skyscrapers jostle with hip, artsy districts and with a food fusion culture that has everything from sushi pizzas to Chinese Jamaican. It’s friendly, multicultural and with an easy going atmosphere with a lot to fill your days. The upside is the more favourable money exchange rate than between the American dollar and the pound. My long weekend was a big pleasant adventure from start to finish. It started with my first sight of the city as I flew in to Toronto Pearson Airport. Looking down I saw the impressive skyscraper skyline beside Lake Ontario. The city is growing fast and the many high-rise condo blocks create a distinctly New York feel. So much so that it is often used as a ‘stand-in’ for the Big Apple by film makers. Toronto is the place where Prince Harry met girlfriend Meghan Markle star of the series Suits which is filmed here. Staying Downtown in the newly-renovated Sheraton Centre was an ideal location a quick walk (in cold weather use the underground PATH system) to the giant Eaton Centre mall and the famous Hudson’s Bay department store. I swam in the beautifully warm outdoor pool with snow falling on my head!

Fly to Toronto with WestJet (00800 5381 5696; westjet.com) from Gatwick from £300pp. Stay at the Sheraton Centre Toronto, www.sheratontoronto.com (from £120 per night for a standard room). For more information on Toronto, visit SeeTorontoNow.com

Here are my top tips for a Toronto city break: Enjoy a memorable dinner at the revolving 360 The Restaurant 1,151ft up the CN Tower for spectacular views. Glass-fronted lifts and a glass floor provide pre-meal thrills, www.cntower.ca
Step back in time at the charming Black Creek Pioneer Village, www.blackcreek.ca Book a walking tour with historian Bruce Bell. You can take in: St Lawrence Market to try the famous Peameal Bacon sandwich and delight in the many food stalls; Toronto’s First Post Office – send a letter written with a quill pen; and finish at the historic Distillery District, www.brucebelltours.ca Enjoy a performance at the Four Seasons Centre by the Canadian National Ballet, www. national.ballet.ca Get a great view of the city on a Toronto Double Decker City Tour, www.citysightseeingtoronto.com Where to eat: Reds Midtown Tavern, a trendy space in the centre of town, www.redsmidtowntavern.com Drake One Fifty, for a modern take on Canadian-style cooking, www.drakeonefifty.ca and Sassafrazz, an upscale eatery with a fabulous vertical garden, www.sassafraz.ca Make your way easily back to the airport aboard the new Union Pearson Express train that departs every 15 minutes and takes just 25 minutes to get you to your flight, www.upexpress.com

W

hen I was younger I used to think of a big weekend away being in a big city with big shops and big nightlife. These days I’m bigger on style than I am on big noise and have recently embraced the enjoyment of a small town. And one of my favourite small towns in which to spend the weekend is Old Amersham in Buckinghamshire. Nestled in the Misbourne Valley, Old Amersham is a small market town big on history, style and culture. It’s a pretty, intriguing town with a wonderful variety of periods of architecture. The main attraction is the town’s unusual charm and character, it’s variety of houses of all shapes and sizes, unique shops, restaurants, cafés, pubs and hotels amongst the 150 listed buildings, preserved in streets that maintain the same general appearance that it had in the 17th and 18th centuries. Steeped in history, Amersham became an important staging point for coaches from London to the Industrial Midlands and you can still see the high arches which were built for the many old coaching inns which catered to the travellers and their horses. Today, there are number of places to stay from bed-and-breakfast in unique surroundings to classically luxurious hotels such as The Crown Inn, a historic, timber-framed building with some parts dating from the 16th century. The hotel is famous for its appearance in Four Weddings and a Funeral, especially room 101 which featured in a romantic scene in the blockbusting film of the 1980s. Along with The Crown Inn, The Kings Arms offers the perfect quaint, quintessentially English retreat, having had starring roles in Miss Marple and Midsomer Murders. The hotel offers 37 deluxe rooms in traditional and contemporary styling with seven suites and four poster rooms. The Kings Chapel, set snuggly in the courtyard of the hotel, is one of Old Amersham’s best kept secrets. The original build and traditional feel of the picturesque 18th century chapel has been refurbished to fit modern needs, yet still provides an intimate and unique setting for any perfect special event, such as a special birthday or wedding. Dine in The Courtyard Restaurant, The Crown Bar & Brasserie or alfresco in the courtyard or have morning coffee or afternoon tea in the Elizabethan lounge. If you would rather walk for your supper there is an enticing range on offer in the town. As a staging post on the coach road, Amersham has always had a good supply of inns. Good food and drink in pleasant surroundings are still high on the menu here. Within the town you will find a wide variety of establishments offering a range of menus to suit all tastes. There are Italian chains offering pizza and pasta and several other great restaurants and cafés. My favourite daytime haunt is Season’s Café Deli. The welcoming informal atmosphere and extensive menu has something to suit everyone. With a love of good food, coffee or the odd bottle of prosecco, it offers a friendly place to while away lunchtime with friends before enjoying the shops of the Old Town.

Shopping in Old Amersham is full of surprises. Search out the unique specialist stores along the High Street, Whielden Street, Market Walk, the Broadway and London Road. Amersham’s historic Old Town successfully blends the beauty of the old with the practicality of the new. Today, its enchanting shops stock everything from antiques to contemporary fashion. The town offers a characterful and refreshing alternative to the bustle of London and uninspiring shopping centre template. There is something for everyone, you just need to walk along the picturesque, wide streets and peer into the variety of shops offering a wonderful array of quality gifts, antiques, interior furnishings and stunning fashion. As much as I enjoy browsing antique shops, art galleries and choosing gifts for my family and friends, a weekend away is a great time to treat myself to some unique new shoes and clothes. Cecilia Quinn is one of the Old Town’s newest shoe shops. They have an original range of luxury Italian designed shoes that are both stylish and comfortable. From diamante heels to elegant and trendy footwear, there is something for everyone and every occasion. And for those who don’t have a weekend to stay and shop they offer a taxi service from Amersham train station to the boutique for clients travelling from further afield! One of my favourite clothes shop is Chatterton’s. The Old Amersham boutique was the first to open before the next three opened across the country. However, the shop has never lost its skill of selling timeless classics as well as contemporary designs from innovative designers. Clothes, shoes and accessories from well known names such as Giorgio Armani, Diane von Furstenberg, and Ralph Lauren sit alongside collections from HIGH by Claire Campbell, Rebecca Taylor and Velvet. The personal touch from the Amersham team makes you feel so welcome and caters for the individual tastes of each customer with passion and flair to find distinctive, quality pieces which enhance your personal wardrobe. I also enjoy browsing in Iris Fashion. I love the chic and bohemian look, floaty cotton maxi dresses and festival fashion. But cleverly there is also a great choice of dressed up styles for those special occasions. From summer weddings to Chelsea Flower Show, to garden parties or even Ascot, to a simple summer pub night or sophisticated dinner date with someone special, they have dresses and even a few jumpsuits that will take you to any summer occasion in perfect style. I also discovered Odette, the exciting boutique specialising in lingerie, nightwear, swimwear and the latest activewear. There are some beautiful brands from around the world. The seductive underwear has quality, style and above all else perfect fit and comfort. Their nightwear is ideal for lounging in or something more slinky for enjoying room 101! An exotic resort room provides all your holiday essentials all year round and stylish activewear which are great for the gym, yoga and pilates. After a busy afternoon shopping, there are opportunities to relax and pamper yourself. Elle – The Beauty Box offers a professional range of cutting & blow drying, colouring, perms and hair treatments for ladies, gentlemen and children. The personal touch invites you in for a free consultation with any of their trained and friendly stylists to ensure that you leave happy with your style. The experienced team of therapists offer a comprehensive list of treatments for both ladies and gentlemen that incorporates everything from sensual pampering to the latest cutting edge anti-ageing techniques. the thinking behind certain principles and support this with a suitable and sustainable nutrition plan. If you’d rather stay out in the fresh air then Old Amersham is a great place to walk around, discovering the rich and sometimes shocking history of the town. Amersham is an ‘old town’, unlike its newer developed area – Amersham on the Hill. Amersham existed as far back as the 8th century, and the Domesday Book lists no fewer than six manors in the area, one belonging to the wife of Edward the Confessor. The High Street is a delight, with historic buildings covering a wide variety of periods lining the broad roadway. Of particular note is the town hall, rising on arches in the centre of the High Street. Amersham was also a centre of political and religious dissent. On the hill above Amersham a monument known as The Martyrs’ Memorial marks the spot where religious dissenters were burnt at the stake under Queen Mary. The cast of the Martyrs Community Play lead walks to the monument every Saturday starting from the Museum. The walk guides tell the story of the Martyrs and life in Amersham in the early 16th century.

These are common problems. They cause severe discomfort for some people, and are a cosmetic problem for many more. Problems can range from tiny thread veins to large varicose veins that create leg ulcers. We have treatments suitable for every issue — no vein is too big or too small for us. For varicose veins, we no longer advise surgical stripping which requires a general anaesthetic and involves a recovery period of several weeks. Our treatments need only local anaesthetic and for thread veins, we can offer sclerotherapy. 01494 257494 enquiries@adsumaesthetics.co.uk www.adsumaesthetics.co.uk

The pretty church of St Mary’s stands in the centre of the town next to the small park created as a memorial to the two world wars. A stroll round the graveyard could lead you to discover the unmarked grave of murderer Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in England in 1955. She is said to haunt the graveyard of her victim, and lover David Blakely in Penn, as well The Crown Inn. Old Amersham may be quiet and tucked away but this jewel of the Chilterns should not be overlooked. There is so much to enjoy and could easily fill a busy weekend, if not longer. So drive the 30 minutes out from London or take the Metropolitan Line to Amersham and enjoy a Big Weekend in a Small Town.

Peony Garden Treasure

Peonies: More than just a pretty bloom … The heavenly fragrance of peonies

Peony Coral Charm

Peony Bartzella

Peony Sarah Bernhardt

P

eonies are undoubtedly one of the showiest plants in the garden with big blousy blooms. There are hundreds of varieties in various shapes and colours, many making excellent cut flowers. Peonies are pretty low maintenance and easy to grow too, making them practically perfect in every way. Early summer in the garden just isn’t the same without the spectacle of peonies flaunting masses of striking flowers and exerting a commanding presence in the flower border. Stunning though the blooms are however, peonies offer more as they seek to overwhelm your senses and romance you; their fragrance is captivating and incredible. People are often surprised to learn that peonies are fragrant which is odd, because there are so many peonies that are fragrant. Perhaps it is because the old-fashioned double red peony we are familiar with has little or no fragrance (Paeonia officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ AGM – it’s a cracking plant though and has been given the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society). Its fair to say also that the single peonies rarely possess a scent, and there aren’t too many scented red peonies so look for the double and semi-double peonies for the best perfumes. Admittedly some peonies are more delicately scented than others but the more heavily scented peonies are quite something and there are plenty of them to choose from. The fragrance can be musky, sweet or rose-like and some have a citrus or spicy scent. Paeonia lactiflora ‘Festiva Maxima’ AGM is heavily scented with a sweet and musky perfume and Paeonia lactiflora ‘Duchess de Nemours’ AGM is a sumptuous white with a pale cream ruffled centre with an intoxicating lemon scent. Another great lemon-scented peony is Paeonia ‘Bartzella’ AGM which is an intersectional peony (a cross between a tree peony and an herbaceous peony) which offers huge bright yellow flowers to boot. For more scented peonies consider Paeonia lactiflora Silver Gilt winner at Chelsea ‘Dr Alexander Fleming’ AGM (double rose-pink), Paeonia lactiflora ‘Honey Gold’ (single white with golden-yellow centre), Paeonia lactiflora ‘Boule de Neige’ (double creamy white ‘snowballs’), Paeonia lactiflora ‘Lady Alexandra Duff’ (double sugar pink) or my favourite, Paeonia lactiflora ‘Catharina Fontijn’ which is a very soft pink, almost blush double flowers that are excellent for cutting. An excellent late-season scented peony is Paeonia lactiflora ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ AGM (double rosepink with darker flares), an old favourite but one which will reliably flower into July. For fragrant red peonies look for any of the following: ‘Inspecteur Laverge’ (double crimson red); ‘Big Ben’ (double bright pink/red); or ‘Felix Crousse’ AGM (double raspberry red). There are however many, many more and it seems an injustice to highlight these few varieties.

he clients had downsized from a very large family home to a much smaller ground floor apartment where much of the living and bedroom space looked directly out onto the garden. The outside space was nothing like they were used to (which was large and spacious) and had been left in an awful state by the builders with paving coming up and half dead plants. Kate Gould was called upon to design a garden based upon topiary shapes that was contemporary in design but still gave the impression of a green space even though there was no room for a lawn. The garden is rectangular and quite small. It is situated at ground level but to retain the other land on the site which slopes considerably the space is contained by walls over 3m high all the way around. The garden is also overlooked by balconies from above; consequently it feels more like a basement space. The problem of overlooking was not expressed as an issue by the clients who were installing large automated blinds but greening all the walls was. The family had come from a garden that they had tended for over 20 years and although they considered this a chance to try something new, they felt that the orange bricks in the retaining boundary walls were very dominant and it was these that had to be minimised most in the scheme. Originally a green wall was considered but this was discounted due to budget. The brief for the scheme was a garden that was primarily to be used for relaxing. It was a garden that should look good all year round. The garden is wider rather than deep and so it was requested that something be designed to extend the shorter aspect. Mirror polished stainless steel panels were designed and commissioned to bounce light around the space as well as providing a false sense of depth to the garden. The garden also had to be very low maintenance with only white or blue flowers, if any. The paving was to complement the new exterior wooden floor which was a light silver colour. The stone selected was a sawn grey sandstone in 600x600mm slabs with a special order of smaller setts cut from the same stone. The materials all have a grey/silver theme; stone, concrete coloured pots from Urbis Design, mirror polished stainless steel in the form of reflective panels and a water feature and also brushed stainless steel details to contrast the mirror effect which created a small arbour to the rear of the water feature.

Sports Day Fun emember when primary school lunch times seemed to last for hours and hours? Rushing out of class straight into those school field games, rounders and running races, games of football interspersed with cartwheels and handstands, Stuck in the Mud, British Bulldog, panting thirst and long walks to the water fountains. The summer school field brings back so many happy memories! But the highlight of the school field, for me, was always Sports Day. Back in the day, Sports Days were all about winning running races, enjoying the egg and spoon race and working as a team in the obstacle race. Sack races really tested your perseverance and the wheelbarrow race challenged your bravery. Mums and dads sat in a line along the tracks cheering you on and telling you how great you were to get 4th place! Toddlers and younger siblings would make you laugh as they zig zagged their way up the race track. And then finally the parent races at the end gave you the opportunity to return the favour and will your parents on to success. Good fun, competitive and a special time to bond with your friends. Whatever has happened to Sports Day? They haven’t gone anywhere! Sports Days are still an important part of primary school calendars. They may have changed over the years but they are still there to be enjoyed and celebrated. Nowadays Sports Days may take many different forms. In some schools there is a focus on teamwork and taking part with little or no emphasis on competition. This can take the form of a round robin of activities whereby teams collect points and there are no individual winners. The activities can build on children’s skills, including basic motor and coordination skills. Other Sports Days can be focused on more individual skills and athletic competition such as running races, throwing and jumping. The best Sports Days probably incorporate a bit of both. Some team activities so everyone can participate and feel successful, whatever their sporting ability, followed by a succession of competitive races and events, giving sporty children the opportunity to shine. The most important aspect of any Sports Day must be the taking part and opportunity to succeed whether that is individually or as part of a team. However you child’s school celebrates Sports Day it is also a great opportunity for you to take part and enjoy a memorable experience to share with your child. So pack that picnic, layer on the sun cream and dress up in your best summer outfit and join the other mums and dads on the school field. But most importantly don’t forget your trainers and have fun at Sports Day.

Your little people deserve to be well dressed too... owadays there is more children’s fashion choice than ever, bearing in mind budgets from across the board. Premium brands are booming, which if you want to splash the cash – you can, or you could always use them for inspiration. The latest celebs to go ‘all creative’ with a children’s line of their own, are Kim Kardashian and Kanye West with TheKidsSupply.com. With West’s previous clothing lines and Kardashian’s boutique shops which she ran with her sisters, they’re both equipped with fashion retail knowledge, though, their names must help. In fact childless fans have already been snapping up adorable mini hoodies and baseball caps in support. Erstwhile model Jools Oliver, wife of Jamie and mum to their five children, designs the colourful Little Bird clothing collection for Mothercare. If towelling Boden fabric tickles your fancy, then head in to see her amazing yellow rainbow dress and cutesy vintage inspired swimsuit in striking stripe, they will ensure your child stands out this summer. If you are serious about your child’s fashion sense, you’ll be serious about whom you trust in terms of style advice, and Liberty who could be better than former Vogue veterans? A newly published not-to-be-missed child centric website is ‘Maisonette’, founded by Sylvana Ward Durrett – previously Executive Assistant to Anna Wintour – and Luisana Mendoza Roccia, who in days gone by was Vogue’s Accessories Editor. Hot off the press, currently the website is only serving US customers but soon international delivery will be added. It’s worth having a look not only to keep your finger on the pulse with expert editorial posts but also to discover carefully sourced smaller, independent children’s boutiques from around the world. Another website serving as both a blog and platform for international children’s garment offerings from independent stores is ‘Babyccino’. They even have Kid-Friendly City Guides for five major cities, and represent more than 400 childrens’ shops from around the world. Every shop mentioned on their site has a personal write-up, so you know they have been there, it is almost like getting a recommendation from a friend. Their ShopUp events in London offer readers the chance to shop in person from some of the finest children’s brands and boutiques, the blog founders also promise to be on hand to meet in person. England’s homegrown brand ‘Caramel’ caters for mothers wanting both beautiful and tough wearing clothes for their little ones, which are both functional and fashionable. Founded by lawyer turned clothes designer Eva Karayiannis, her shops in London and across the globe offer cute collections ranging from easy wear lightweight jumpsuits with detailed stitching and pockets, to glam gold multi-layered tulle tutus with silk ribbons. For the busy mother, online ordering is a no brainer and often bargains can be had. ‘FarFetch’ launched a kids division last year featuring upscale outfits with luxury childrenswear brands such as Moschino, Dolce and Gabbana and Stella McCartney – with prices to match. The sale section is tempting, set the ‘sort’ tab to Price (lowest first) and you may be pleasantly surprised. If you would rather get your children to try clothes on before a purchase, there are a wealth of stores to peruse whilst shopping for your cherubs including the ever classical Liberty’s in London. Little Liberty houses clothes for expectant mothers, babies, toddlers, children Boden and teenagers in eye-catching prints. If you need to buy gifts for birthday parties then their toy selection makes a sensible start. Popular ‘Petit Bateau’ should be a first stop shop this summer when buying their swimwear, the lively colours and pop prints will ensure your child brings a burst of joy to the beach; their printed hats to protect young faces shouldn’t be overlooked either. Mini Boden claim their collections are designed with exploring in mind, so they’re big on comfort and machine wash-ability. From unique boys’ T-shirts and twirlable girls’ dresses, to coats, shoes and accessories in a kaleidoscope of colours, they are on hand to dress your children from head to toe; free UK deliveries are a bonus. Another firm favourite is cool ‘Kath Kidson’. I’m particularly drawn to the nightwear in soft jersey cotton, glamorous girls can wear Notting Hill Rose nighties, whilst boys stand out in soldiers featured on the London Streets PJ sets. Let them feel grown up by giving them useful accessories in the Kidson iconic prints, from Liberty watches and wallets to brollies and bags. Rachel Riley, a favourite of Kate Middleton when dressing her children, since founding her company in 1994 it’s grown to become a multi-award winning brand. Formerly Director of Childrenswear at Laura Ashley, her clothes cater well for occasion wear in particular. If shopping for garments made from environmentally friendly materials matters to you when buying for your offspring, then websites such as ‘Style With Heart’ should be on your radar. Ethical and eco-conscious clothing for children that makes use of fairtrade, organic, recycled or fairly traded materials are a promise when buying from them. Best of all, there is a huge variety from carefully curated brands available to buy from under the umbrella off the one website.

s the summer sun fades into an autumn chill a visit to a London museum can be a warm and refreshing experience. Not only do London’s museums hold some of the world’s most dazzling collections, they are world class when it comes to temporary exhibitions. And autumn 2017 is no exception. What is so special about London museums is the variety they offer. Fashionistas can enjoy the Balenciaga exhibition while music lovers can rock away the hours at the Pink Floyd Exhibition under the same roof. Scientists can dive into nature, go beneath the waves to explore the extraordinary lives of whales and follow the history of India’s scientific culture, past and present. Robots and surfboards, poster girls on London Transport demonstrate design and innovation, while badges and artefacts offer glimpses into the LGBT histories. The battle for Civil Rights in America to Reflections on Helmand in Afghanistan span the political spectrum, portrayed in photography, paintings and a range of mediums. So leave the kids at school and enjoy some adult time. Don’t feel guilty for leaving the parks and festivals behind and coming indoors throughout the autumn, choose from our recommendation of London museum exhibitions and enjoy some culture – whatever your taste.

Indoors this Autumn

The Victoria and Albert Museum, Knightsbridge, is the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design, housing a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects. It is known for its spectacular exhibitions and permanent decorative arts collection. Fashion lovers will enjoy Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion. This exhibition examines the work and legacy of influential Spanish couturier Cristobal Balenciaga, with over 100 pieces created by the master of couture, his protégées and contemporary fashion designers working in the same innovative tradition. And if you prefer music try The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains. Unbelievably it is a staggering 50 years ago that Gilmour, Waters and co released their first single. The V&A is hosting a retrospective of those psychedelic pioneers. The British Museum, Bloomsbury, is dedicated to human history, art and culture. This spectacular building hosts classic and modern exhibitions that entice and enthral visitors. Traditionalist will love exploring the museum’s most famous treasures with an illuminating 90-minute guided tour. Discover the Rosetta Stone, Parthenon sculptures as well as some lesser-known but fascinating objects. Add some twist and spice to your visit by visiting the Desire, Love, Identity: Exploring LGBTQ Histories exhibition. This display offers glimpses into LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer) histories, experiences and lives by examining objects from around the world, covering ancient civilisations right up to today. The Science Museum, South Kensington, is a vast treasury of science and invention, famous for its state-of-the-art interactive exhibits. In early autumn the Robots exhibition explores the 500-year story of humanoid robots and the artistic and scientific quest to understand what it means to be human. Set in five different periods and places, the exhibition features a unique collection of over 100 robots, from a 16th-century mechanical monk to robots from science fiction and modern-day research labs. Twelve of the robots are working models and you may even get the chance to interact with one. In later autumn, Illuminating India is a series of exhibitions dedicated to the people, culture and skills of India. The programme will centre on two exhibitions celebrating the country’s rich culture and history of innovation. One is an ambitious and unprecedented survey of photography in India from the emergence of the medium in the 19th century to the present day. The other will highlight India’s long tradition of scientific thought from the ancient past to the present day. It will look at the country’s expertise in observation, calculation and innovation, emphasising the importance of science in India as a way of understanding the world and creating a better society. The Natural History Museum, Kensington, is a landmark museum of animals and natural phenomena, with hands-on exhibits and animatronic dinosaurs. The museum exhibits a vast range of specimens from various segments of natural history. This autumn go beneath the waves to explore the extraordinary lives of whales. Dive through one of the world’s most compelling evolutionary journeys. More than 100 specimens from the museum’s collection will be on display together for the first time, from parts of a colossal blue whale to a small harbour porpoise. Travel back 50 million years to the beginning of the evolution of the whale. See how whales became sociable, aquatic mammals, some of which can communicate over vast distances. The Tate Modern, Bankside, is a modern gallery with international works on display. Autumn’s Soul of a Nation exhibition shines a bright light on the vital contribution of Black artists to a dramatic period in American art and history. The show opens in 1963 at the height of the Civil Rights movement and its dreams of integration. In its wake emerged more militant calls for Black Power: a rallying cry for African American pride, autonomy and solidarity, drawing inspiration from newly independent African nations. Artists responded to these times by provoking, confronting, and confounding expectations. Their momentum makes for an electrifying visual journey. Vibrant paintings, powerful murals, collage, photography, revolutionary clothing designs and sculptures made with Black hair, melted records, and tights – the variety of artworks reflects the many viewpoints of artists and collectives at work during these explosive times. The Wellcome Collection, Bloomsbury, houses the 19th century collector Henry Wellcome’s medical antiquities, plus hi-tech modern displays and art. Our relationship with nature is explored in the autumn exhibition – A Museum of Modern Nature. The exhibition challenges the common thought of nature as something separate from ourselves – something elsewhere, somewhere to visit and not part of our daily lives. Yet in reality nature is all around us. Whether we live in densely packed cities or rural countryside, we are part of a complex ecosystem with the plants, animals, land, air and water that surround us. The exhibition will shine a light on how each of us connects with nature. There will be displays of objects borrowed from members of the public that tell a story about their relationship with nature. Together they’ll create a snapshot of how we think about nature in the 21st century. The London Transport Museum, Covent Garden, records the history of London transport from horse power onwards, with loads of contraptions to clamber aboard, and seeks to conserve and explain the transport heritage of Britain’s capital city. Girl Power comes to the museum with Poster Girls; a major new exhibition that celebrates the female graphic artists whose work illuminated London’s transport system during the 20th and 21st centuries. Get an insight into these women’s lives, from their background stories, to the period in which they worked and the designers who inspired them. And find out how they in turn influenced 20th-century designs. The Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, was established while the First World War was still being fought and will mark its centenary in 2017. To commemorate 100 years of its study of modern war, IWM is presenting a programme of exhibitions and events. The programme includes responses to conflict and the personal stories of those whose lives have been affected by war over the last century. In the autumn, Afghanistan: Reflections on Helmand examines the British arrival in Helmand province, Afghanistan, in 2006 and the decisions that shaped the way the conflict escalated, exploring the impact this period had on those who were there and the lessons learnt from this deployment. On display are newly acquired objects, photography and video and audio interviews, most of which have never been displayed before.

The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, houses a collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900. Throughout the autumn art lovers can discover how van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait was one of the beacons by which the Pre-Raphaelites forged a radical new style of painting and explore the tradition of painting in black and white from its beginnings in the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and into the 21st century.

The Design Museum, Kensington, displays contemporary design and innovation, from the everyday to the cutting edge The museum covers product, industrial, graphic, fashion and architectural design. The early autumn exhibition – California – is the first exhibition to examine its current global reach. Picking up the story in the 1960s, the exhibition charts the journey from the counterculture to Silicon Valley’s tech culture. The central premise is that California has pioneered tools of personal liberation, from LSD to surfboards and iPhones. This ambitious survey brings together political posters and portable devices, but also looks beyond hardware to explore how user interface designers in the San Francisco Bay area are shaping some of our most common daily experiences. By turns empowering, addictive and troubling, Californian products have affected our lives to such an extent that in some ways we are all now Californians.

There’s always a reason it seems

B

ritain, and London in particular, is riddled with some of the most peculiar rules and privileges. These are manifested in the many royal prerogatives or parliamentary and legal statutes (though nowadays some are no longer adhered to, relevant or enforced). To the unwitting tourist they must seem both extreme and endearing in their quirky British-ness. If you take in the Tower of London, you are bound to be unaware of a decree of Charles 2nd stipulating that six ravens must be kept there at all times. For, according to legend, if the ravens leave, both the Tower and the Kingdom will fall and so, as insurance, the Raven Master makes a point of keeping chicks on site. Beside the Tower, alongside its pier, for every Royal Navy ship that moors there, she must deliver a barrel of rum to the Tower’s Constable. This has been in effect since the 14th Century. Every ship that came upstream to the City had to unload a portion of its cargo to enjoy the protection of the Tower of London guns. In the past such bounty would have included oysters, mussels, cockles, rushes and wine. The current stipulation for a barrel of rum acts nowadays as a symbol of the former rights. Also, on the river Thames, for reasons more understandable in this day and age, is the regulation that prevents you from heating or melting “pitch, fat, rosin, grease, tallow, oil or other combustible matter” on board ship between Blackwall and Westminster Bridge. On London Bridge however, life’s a joy if you’re a Freeman of London. Not only are you permitted to drive a flock of sheep across the Bridge, you can also herd a gaggle of geese down Cheapside. This is according to an old book of traditional ceremonies and privileges first presented in 1237 and it is still a title taken up by 1,800 people every year. Even better, you can get as drunk and disorderly as you like without being arrested. There’s no room for disorder for shoppers however over in the West End on Piccadilly. They may be amazed to hear of a rule that is still enforced rather too vigorously for some. On the Burlington Arcade, Regency decorum is kept with a rule banning singing, humming, whistling, hurrying and “behaving boisterously”. If you are in festive mood, book a party of 13 at the Savoy Hotel’s famous Grill. You’ll find that your table is set for an extra guest called Kaspar the black cat. He is a three-foot high sculpture and has joined guests ever since the 1920s. What happened was that in 1898 a guest called Woolf Joel, gave a dinner party to which only 13 were able to come. There was an old superstition that tragedy would hit the first of the 13 guests to get up from the table. Woolf took no notice and was fatally shot following his return to Johannesburg. The hotel took steps to prevent any chance of a repetition and Kaspar was created specially for the job. The handsome cat was at one time even under the protection of Winston Churchill, who insisted on his safe return following a prank by members of the RAF. Interesting that for someone who secured liberty for the entire world still held to superstitious tendencies!

Stop worrying The perks of tennis: and get that mole sorted, summer mole checking by Anna Gucova, Nurse Specialist at The Mole Clinic, www.themoleclinic.co.uk

Do you have a peculiar looking mole? Or a new mole, or one that is changing shape? Self-monitoring is easier than you think – just follow the ‘ABCDE rule’ on what you should be looking out for: A: Look for moles that are asymmetrical in shape, where one half of the mole is unlike the other B: Does the mole have an irregular border? Is it scalloped, jagged or poorly defined? C: Is the colour of the mole different from one area to another or does it have different shades of tan, brown or black? D: Check the diameter of the mole to see if it is bigger than 7mm (about the size of the end of a pencil) E: Is the mole evolving or changing size, shape or colour? It is really important to take note of ‘E’, as any mole that is evolving or changing needs to be examined by an expert like The MOLE Clinic right away. Get any abnormal moles diagnosed at The Mole Clinic using a non-invasive technique that captures highly magnified images of the mole beneath the surface to identify cancerous changes. With skin cancer, only early detection saves lives – if you follow the above guidelines, it’s as easy as ABCDE to keep your skin-health in check.

s the nation prepares for its annual fortnight of sporting drama at The All England Club, Nick Elliot, National Head Tennis Coach at GLL – the UK’s largest public tennis provider – explains why it’s not just sporting superstars that can enjoy the benefits of taking to the court. “We welcome customers of all ages and abilities to our Better facilities, to enjoy tennis in a number of ways. Some work with our specialist coaches to develop their skills for competition, while others simply enjoy socialising with friends whilst taking part in sport. Either way, tennis is a great way of making more people more active, more often. “Tennis offers a plethora of benefits to a person’s health and wellbeing. As well as the social benefits, enjoying a game of tennis is a great way to reduce stress, lower your resting heart rate and blood pressure. What’s more, it’s also a great way to improve flexibility, strength and muscle tone whilst also burning fat. According to Harvard Health Publications, a 155-pound person can burn 260 calories in just 30 minutes on court! “So, this summer, while the sporting elite chase a Wimbledon crown, remember, you too can reap your benefits of picking up a racket.”

ummer is just around the corner, meaning now is the perfect time to get moles checked ahead of the warmer weather. We should make the most of sunshine when it arrives but it is important to take precautions and not bask in it too generously. Damage to the skin can occur from sun exposure to the sun and cannot be reversed. Precautionary steps to prevent yourself from further damage include avoiding sun bed use completely and following sun safety advice, such as wearing sunscreen with high SPF and UVA rating whilst also avoiding burning in the sun completely. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, affecting 1 in 10 people. Whilst caught early, Melanoma is easily treated – caught too late it can kill. Rates of melanoma are increasing faster than any other cancer. The MOLE Clinic believe early detection would reduce the number of deaths drastically in the UK, which currently stands at over 2,000 per year (more than Australia).

or many professionals, work is a part of their identity. This is particularly true for people that may have management positions or those that are business owners, entrepreneurs or those in positions of power or trust. For these people, taking a holiday may mean physically getting away from the office, but they are still mentally engaged, concerned and monitoring what is going on at their place of business. Unfortunately, without a “mental break” from the demands of their work, their holiday may be restful physically, but mentally it can be more exhausting than being at work. He or she may constantly be worrying if things are being done correctly, if deadlines are being met or if opportunities are being leveraged in the best interests of the business. If you fall into this category and cannot seem to disengage mentally from the workplace, you will not have the time and space needed to refresh, re-energise and rejuvenate for the days, weeks and months before your next break. To help any business professional to be able to take a psychological break from work, here are some key tips anyone can use on holiday: – take a break from email, social media, business • Unplug messenger systems or other types of work-related online activities. If you can’t take a complete break, consider accessing these types of accounts only once a day and for a set period of time.

to a trusted colleague – find someone you trust • inDelegate your organization to handle issues that fall under your responsibility while you are away. Instruct this person on how to handle issues before you leave, then have them contact you only in the event that they are unable to make a decision.

Distract and enjoy – find things to do on your holiday • that are of interest to you and something you will find distracting. This doesn’t have to be something extremely exciting or extravagant, perhaps consider reading a book you are looking forward to or spend time doing something you enjoy but never seem to have the time. Finally, it is always a good idea to get outdoors. Find a new place to explore, go for a hike, spend a day at the beach or stroll around a neighbourhood you have never been before. A favourite outdoor place is also a great idea, just make sure you leave your internet connected devices at home.

In Pursuit of Happiness and Success We all seek it, here’s how to get it! Health Health is everything, without it we have nothing. Looking after ourselves is paramount: eat well, drink moderately, exercise every day. Have Goals and Dream Big Know what you want and make a plan to get it. Without a desire to aspire, mountains would not be climbed, nor pinnacles reached. No Excuses, No Procrastination We all make mistakes but our choices are our own so take responsibility, learn from them and do better next time. Thinking about something is not the same as doing it – a job started is already half finished. Be Flexible The tree that stays strong bends in the wind. Strength comes from being able to change direction and adapt when you need to. Small Steps A journey of a thousand miles starts with one small step. The path will sometimes be steep and progress will be slow but by continuing to move in the right direction we will eventually get to our destination. Cherish the Little Things Don’t allow the pursuit of perfection to diminish the beauty of the moment. Every day endeavour to take time out to appreciate something… a flower, a piece of music, a child’s laughter… and just enjoy it. Focus on what’s Important It’s easy to become sidetracked, and diversions can often prove fortuitous, but success is never achieved overnight, or without discipline and dogged determination. To Lead, or Follow? Relinquishing control can be difficult – but good leaders delegate, allowing others to learn and grow, while also knowing when they need to retake the helm. Learn to Say No and Ditch the Doomsayers Don’t be a doormat, push back on some of those commitments and free up time for more important things. Are there people in your life that you dread spending time with? Cut them out, or at the very least, cut down the time you spend with them to a minimum. Balance and Moderation A little of everything over time is better than everything all at once. Do you need some help to achieve your happy state? Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, is available by appointment for private consultations and motivational meetings.

How to get the most of your holiday with true relaxation

Get a head start for summer

W

ith holidays on the horizon, why not give your hair a summer lift and experiment with freehand hair colouring? According to a survey by Wella, 40% of women admit the first thing they notice about someone is their hair. Just like make-up contouring, hair colour can be tweaked and tinted to flatter your facial features. Freehand colouring techniques such as Balayage and Ombre involve sweeping sections of hair lightly with colour to enhance your natural features. Colour is strategically and individually placed to add tone, shine and depth. The result is a bespoke transformation and hair that appears brighter, healthier and multi-dimensional. Wella’s colour expert Claire Chell explains: “Freehand enables professionals to create accents of colour to flatter your natural colouring. They are trained to assess your face shape, skin tone, eye colour and hairstyle to ensure your colour is truly personalised to you.” Unlike traditional hair colouring from foils, you don’t need to worry about noticeable regrowth lines as the freely-applied highlights are soft and subtle. One of the best things about freehand colouring is that it works with every hair type and colour (even greys!) and its lowmaintenance upkeep makes it a popular choice for all ages. “Professional hair colours and lighteners have evolved so much over the years that with the right haircare regime both at home and in salon, the world of hair colour is your oyster,” adds Claire.

Good Spa Guide (www.goodspaguide.co.uk) uncovers the best spas in this farflung paradise.

Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa

Six Senses Laamu Six Senses Laamu is on one of the southernmost atolls in The Maldives, a 50 minute flight from Malé. Olhuveli Island, home to Six Senses, has 96 villas which fan out from three jetties. Half the island and its attractions are over the water and the rest – including the spa – are on land. A few minutes’ walk from the reception, the discreet spa is screened by trees. The nine treatment ‘nests’ are scattered around the spa area; the rooms are woven from branches entwined around each other. Post treatment, take a seat in the neighbouring juice bar which has an undisturbed view of the beach, or head to the steam room in the changing rooms – if you can take the added layer of heat. Treatments are rooted in Ayurveda (a traditional medicine system from India) or traditional spa facials and massages.

www.sixsenses.com

Coco Bodu Hithi

Coco Bodu Hithi is a smaller boutique resort in the North Malé Atoll, a boat ride from Malé airport. Arrive at the main pontoon and you’ll walk past the beach area, pool and Air, one of the seven restaurants. The accommodation is made up of island villas on land and two sets of over-water villas; the Escape Water Residences come with a lifestyle concierge to abet your stay. Coco Spa is set on stilts over the water; the six treatment rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the ocean. The wooden sauna and slate-lined steam room are at the centre of the spa space with loungers and cabanas, a Jacuzzi and cold plunge pool just beyond. Make time to take a yoga class, too, the pavilion looks over the beach – your sun salutations will never have felt so good.

www.cocoboduhithi.com

Amilla Fushi

Amilla Fushi is on Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve full of colourful sea life. As with many Maldivian resorts, there are plenty of pristine beaches, coconut groves and a lively reef, but there the similarities end. Amilla is a contemporary take on Maldives living and is full of personality. The resort centres on the infinity pool; you’ve got bars and restaurants, a long beach with cushion loungers, the kids club and the watersports centre. Villas are scattered around the island or part of over-water wings. Javvu Spa has coconut and almond trees to one side and the ocean to the other. The 10 treatment pods are wood-clad so merge into the trees; each has a bathroom, shower, deck area and either a sauna or steam room. Try the single-sex thermal facilities which have green-lit steam rooms, traditional wooden saunas and unheated plunge pools. Treatments range from holistic ila rituals to results-driven facials and personal training with Notting Hill favourite, Bodyism.

Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru

Landaa Giraavaru has the whitest sand and bluest waters, it’s as close as you will get to paradise on earth. Take a sea plane from Malé or island hop from the sister property Four Seasons Kuda Huraa. The resort is subtly, comfortably grand with 103 villas, four restaurants, diving, water sports and a marine conservation centre which rehabilitates injured or sick turtles. The spa, which is at the centre of the island, is divided into two. On one side of reception you can have western treatments in over-water rooms, there’s also a hair studio and nail suite. On the other side is a walkway lined with a Tibetan prayer flag that leads to the wooden Ayurvedic rooms and a spa garden flourishing with plants and herbs used in the treatments. The Ayurvedic treatments are some of the best we’ve ever tried.

Hideaway Beach Resort and Spa

Hideaway is in the northernmost part of The Maldives, but the distance travelled buys you space and peace. The crescent-shaped island is very traditionally Maldivian; expect bungalows on stilts, large wooden furniture and decadent bathrooms. There’s a huge amount to do on the island with four restaurants, three pools, water sports, an on-water inflatable obstacle course and photolab – an adult dressing up box. The spa draws on Balinese traditions with intricate wood work, peaceful trickling water and plenty of blooming flowers. The therapists are all Balinese, too. The spa is all about privacy, so you’ll find steam rooms and Jacuzzis in most of the large treatment rooms. The relaxation area has swinging seats; curl up post treatment and have a refreshing cold ginger tea. Treatments use German brand Dorissima for holistic rituals or results driven facials and massages from Natura Bissé.

The Shangri-La resort on Villingili in the Maldives is a ridiculously beautiful setting for meditation and rejuvenation. Think miles of white sand fringed with coconut palms, huge wooden water villas on stilts and a glittering sapphire lagoon. There are 142 villas, three restaurants, an impressive beach-side infinity pool, water sports, a golf course, an eco-centre and the spa, CHI. CHI, The Spa, is on the north side of the island and has 11 thatched treatment rooms (some with their own gardens and steam rooms), a dedicated Ayurveda treatment space, a yoga and meditation pavilion jutting over the sea, and a beachside hammam. Treatments are either western facials and massages with American brand Kerstin Florian or Ayurvedic treatments and programmes with an expert Ayurveda consultant. Supermodel Elle Macpherson signed up for a 10-day Ayurveda programme when the resort opened in 2009, and if it’s good enough for her…

eiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word Rei which means “Universal Life” and Ki which means “Energy”. Reiki is the wondrous life energy that flows through all living things. It is believed that a person’s ki or energy should be strong and free-flowing. When this is the case a person is physically, mentally, and emotionally balanced and their body and mind are in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical, mental or emotional imbalance. Eastern systems of medicine have always recognised and worked with this energy. This energy is known as “Ki” in Japan, “Chi” in China and “Prana” in India. All traditional and modern forms of energy therapy such as Reiki, Yoga or Acupuncture are believed to work by stimulating clearance of energy blocks and allowing natural healing mechanisms to work. The art of Reiki is a healing technique whereby the Reiki Practitioner administers energy healing by means of touch. This “life force energy” flows through to activate and strengthen the body’s natural healing processes to help restore physical, mental and emotional well-being. Reiki simultaneously works to balance the chakras in the body enabling the body to heal itself. Reiki is a natural, gentle and non-invasive yet powerful healing method which serves to align and balance your Sacred Self in a beautiful way.

f, like me, you thought contouring was a celebrity secret, then think again. While most of us don’t live a red carpet-lifestyle, using make-up to create the illusion of a stronger jawline, more chiselled cheeks and a slimmer, radiant face is a trick of the trade we can all learn. Not all faces are the same shape, so there’s no onesize-fits-all. To help get you started, go online for a host of tips and how-to videos. With practice, you’ll learn how to define and shape your features in the most flattering way, even if it’s just adding a touch of bronzer on your chin for a natural sun-kissed glow. You create a blank canvas when applying foundation, so you need to add the dimensions back in and alter the shape of your face by using: Lighter shades to conceal or enhance areas of your face, or make them appear brighter (highlighting) and, Darker tones to create depth to areas you want to appear softer or more drawn in (contouring). The make-up techniques use foundation, cream-based, or powder products – or a combination of all three – along with pencils, concealer sticks, palettes, brushes and sponges. Eventually, you’ll build up a make-up kit that’s perfect for your face shape, skin tone and the amount of time you’re able to devote to the art of contouring.

Here are eight steps to help you on your facial filler journey:

Dermal Fillers How to choose your practitioner

1. The reason Consider how facial filler treatment is going to benefit you.

2. Research Do your research. There is a lot of information online, but if you can contact someone who has previously undergone treatment, even better! Visit www.this-isme.com to read more about real life experiences.

3. Location An important yet regularly dismissed aspect. A clinical setting with good lighting is crucial – do not let someone inject you in a domestic setting.

4. Qualified practitioner Finding a qualified practitioner is vital to ensuring a safe treatment. Ask your practitioner about their qualifications, and preferably only continue treatment with a qualified doctor, nurse or surgeon.

5. In-depth consultation Ideally this should be at least half an hour, and your practitioner should record your medical history, note any known allergies and discuss with you any safety concerns associated with treatment.

6. Clinical assessment A good practitioner will undertake a detailed facial assessment before starting any treatment and advise you on the best areas to treat and give you an idea of a realistic finished result.

7. Treatment planning You should receive a personalised treatment plan because, after all, no one size fits all. At S-Thetics we use a full-face approach, done gradually so that all areas are gently addressed to create refreshed and natural-looking results.

8. Aftercare support Before proceeding with any treatment, ensure you will have access to aftercare support. This will allow you a more relaxed treatment journey, with your practitioner on hand to address any queries or issues that you may have. Following these eight simple steps will help to ensure you have a safe and stress-free treatment journey.

To find out more or to schedule a consultation, please contact S-Thetics on: S-Thetics Medical Aesthetic Clinic Marlborough House, 45 Wycombe End, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, HP9 1LZ 01494 670 990 info@sthetics.co.uk www.sthetics.co.uk

Dermal fillers are a non-permanent cosmetic injectable treatment which can effectively treat some of the deeper underlying signs of ageing, such as lines, wrinkles, loss of volume and jawline sagging. The most commonly used fillers today are largely composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar molecule which occurs naturally in the body. HA is found in abundance in our skin, cartilage, joints and the fluid in our eyes and is the most water-loving molecule known to man. Around one third of our total HA is made and broken down daily, and as we age our bodies’ natural ability to regenerate HA slowly decreases. With our advanced understanding of your facial anatomy and the ageing process, we at S-Thetics take a full face approach to your treatment, rather than the old fashioned method of merely ‘chasing lines’. Our patients find they receive compliments on how well they look, rather than being asked if they have had ‘work done’. Miss Balaratnam, medical director of S-Thetics, is a fully qualified surgeon and cosmetic doctor and holds the prestigious title of “Local Country Ambassador” (LCA) for Allergan, the manufacturers of BOTOX® and the Juvederm® Ultra and the latest Juvederm® Vycross range of fillers. As one of only ten UK surgeons and doctors selected as an LCA, she believes in the importance of a patient taking the time to select the right practitioner for them.

Thirty years in Notting Hill

hen I chose Notting Hill as the area in which to buy my flat over 30 years ago in the winter of 1985, it was because it seemed to possess many contrasting attractions. It is undeniably central with the West End in walking distance and yet with the private gardens uniquely interspersing the larger domestic streets, there was a true sense of seclusion. With the Cold War still alive and ill in the eighties, the many embassies and communities under the Soviet regime suggested secrecy and espionage. Garages were stuffed with protest placards and a Czech hostel had an altar outside the front door on which flowers were offered up to the Prague martyrs of 1968. This was all to change in 1989 with the collapse of the Berlin Wall. It was the storms of 1987 that caused the first literally radical change: trees were uprooted and the gardens lost their Alice in Wonderland mystique. No longer did the birds twitter louder than the taxis screeched. Then came the ‘Trustafarians’: wealthy bohemians leaving Chelsea the moment the Markham Arms, with her beautiful bay windows, on the Kings Road became an Abbey National branch. This new tribe revelled in the Rizla culture, the unmatching socks and the string used as dog leads. Poor lived side by side with the rich and ethnic pockets were to be explored and shared by all. The police had had their fill of the ‘no-go’ All Saints Road and the demonstrations outside Tesco. The carnival went through an era of unbridled debauchery and violence. Then came the movie “Notting Hill”. It changed everything. American wives assumed the area was full of bumbling Hugh Grants and bullied their corporate husbands to snap up the property. The Portobello Road, honest as a street market, became popular beyond the consequence of its guidebook appearances. As in many Mediterranean souks, where carpets were a hard sell for tourists keen to travel light, so the Portobello began to sell postcards and antique trinkets rather than oil paintings and coffee shops studded the pavement as a welcome break for the shoppers. The private gardens lost much of their charm. Hedge fund wives, elected onto the committees, wanted more signposts installed and further tarmac laid as if to make unloading picnics from the car boot all the easier. Houses were bought to be gutted into so-called iceberg homes, where underground rooms were created as cinemas and, doubtless, squash courts for the nannies. All to the irritation of the neighbours, caked in dust and living in shaking homes with permanent parking restrictions. I know that house prices across Britain have often destroyed the local fabric. My area still has a ‘village feel’ if a little self-consciously, especially as the definition would appear now to be one that requires five estate agents to be located in a row. The bohemian streak of the nineties went, in keeping with its ephemeral and fickle nature, first to the cheaper East End of Shoreditch and then Dalston to move once again now to New Cross and Peckham. But a legacy endures. The market, both the property and the fruit one, is sustained. Arguably only the Golborne Road has kept its full authenticity. The writers have held on (with over seventy published authors still in the area) and the Carnival has withstood the pleas to have it relocated to Hyde Park. Local eccentrics are accepted parts of the furniture. And thousands of “Bridge and Tunnel” types flood to have a look and, in the main, come away gratified by all that it offers. I am reluctantly staying put!

‘Tribute to 70Years of Ferrari’ Special Ferrari celebrations for Salon Privé Concours Masters Saturday 2nd September, Blenheim Palace, Woodstock

Tickets for Salon Privé 2017, which will take place over the three days from 31st August to 2nd September, are on sale now and further information on the Concours Masters and Chubb Insurance Concours d’Elégance can be found at www.salonpriveconcours.com

S

alon Privé, the UK’s longest-standing, professionally-judged Concours event, will dedicate its finale day to Ferrari’s 70th anniversary on Saturday 2nd September. Concours Masters will present ‘Tribute to 70 Years of Ferrari’, showcasing 70 Maranello’ marvels on the majestic lawns of Blenheim Palace. Early entries include the oldest-surviving UK-based Ferrari – a 1949 Ferrari Tipo 166 Inter Coupe Touring, one of only 11 built. The world-class entry will track Ferrari history right to the very latest 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta. Becoming the UK’s only Concours event to singularly celebrate the 70th anniversary of the legendary marque, Salon Privé is delighted to announce early entries to its Concours Masters Ferrari celebration. The Auction viewing in the Showground begins at 9am on Saturday, 2nd September. Salon Privé opens at 11am with a Classic Car Parade at 11.45. Guests will be dazzled by a timeline of 70 special, and inherently different models from the Maranello-based marque, after which they can enjoy the established event set-up of a Champagne Reception and Luncheon. At 2pm the special Ferrari Parade will take place, then the Auction in the Showground. English Afternoon Tea will be served at 4pm followed by the announcement of the Ferrari winners and the day will close at 6pm. All the luxury brands have to offer will be on display within the stunning surroundings of Blenheim Palace, where guests will have the opportunity to admire some of the world’s rarest classic cars and motorcycles. With the promise of bringing some of the rarest Ferraris in the world to the lawns of Blenheim Palace, the entry list for Concours Masters includes the UK’s oldestsurviving 1949 Ferrari Tipo 166 Inter Coupe Touring, which has competed and finished no less than four Mille Miglias in its lifetime. This particular example, the eighth road car ever made by the marque, is the fourth Tipo 166 Inter with a Touring body of a total of 11 produced. With such an early example of the Maranello marque, it seems fitting that the Ferrari 166 Inter Coupe Touring will be joined by a very rare UK-supplied 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta, ‘book-ending’ 70 years of incredible machines from the world’s most iconic sports car maker. New for 2017, the all-new Concours Masters will pay tribute to a celebration theme each year, be it an anniversary of a marque, coachbuilder, or a focus on countries of automotive excellence. Following on from the long-standing Chubb Insurance Concours d’Elégance, Concours Masters will make Salon Privé the first event in the world to host two Concours during the same event. The judging will be more subjective and aesthetic than the traditional scrutiny of usual Concours events, being as much about participation and celebration of the Ferrari marque. “Considering Enzo Ferrari gave me my first professional drive, Formula 1 race, and first Le Mans, I’m obviously very excited to celebrate 70 Years of Ferrari with the Salon Privé team,” said Chief Judge and five-times Le Mans winner, Derek Bell. “I’ve been judging cars at Salon Privé for 10 years now and the move to the new home of Blenheim Palace is without doubt one of the most significant enhancements in its time. However, the new Concours Masters represents another milestone turningpoint for Salon Privé and I’m very excited to be heading up the judging team.”

ritish craftsmen in paint and wallpaper, Farrow & Ball is searching for real homes that showcase the unique look its paint and wallpaper brings to properties around the world. The renowned colour experts are asking décor lovers to come forward and share their homes for the chance to be featured in the Farrow & Ball Top 50 digital book. Those selected to feature in the digital book will win 10L of paint and a copy of the Farrow & Ball book ‘How to Decorate’. Whether modern or traditional homes, classic or eclectic, large or small, the Dorset-based paint and wallpaper company is looking to showcase its fans who have made the Farrow & Ball look uniquely theirs. Farrow & Ball enthusiasts from across the world are invited to share images of their own homes on social media by using the hashtag #myFaBhome and on the Farrow & Ball dedicated Inspiration website, inspiration.farrow-ball.com. Commenting on the campaign, head of creative at Farrow & Ball, Charlotte Cosby said: “Homes are shared with us every day and we love seeing how others have incorporated our paint and wallpaper into their interiors. Each home is different, and they all have a distinct look that beautifully reflects the customer’s own style. “As a result, we decided to create the Unique Look ambassador campaign, which aims to find real people in real homes that we can showcase in our #myFaBhome Top 50 digital book.” Those selected will have their homes featured in the book and throughout the year in Farrow & Ball brochures, social media, website and more. Farrow & Ball attributes the distinctive look to the extraordinary way its highly pigmented paint and handcrafted wallpaper responds to all types of light, bringing walls to life. The rich blend of pigments within these absorbing colours create an unmatched vibrancy in every room of the home. www.farrow-ball.com

Al fresco activities are the way to go…

hen it’s sunny outside, the last thing you want to do is spend your time indoors, so here are some ideas of how to amuse yourself out-ofdoors this summer… Even now, I have fond memories of the first open air theatre that my mother took me to as a child; it was A Midsummer Night’s Summer Dream at Regent’s Park open Air Theatre. I was entranced and being able to devour a divine picnic whilst fixated on the characters was a mere bonus. Check out their website and purchase yourself some tickets, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist and Jesus Christ Superstar in a sublime setting are sure to be a nice surprise. You don’t have to be a royal to visit Somerset House, built by Edward Seymour, Lord Protector and Duke of Somerset, in 1547, who ordered a palace for himself on the banks of the Thames, he left behind a stunning legacy for you to enjoy. Grab yourself a ticket to see both emerging and established artists in one of central London’s most iconic gig locations, Summer Series at Somerset House includes Norah Jones, Goldfrapp and Birdy to name a few. If film is more of what you fancy then their Summer Screen line-up is for you, family fun in the form of Bhaji On The Beach, or Jaws perhaps – just two among a select series of cinema classics. The Rooftop Club and Luna Cinema also have a huge offering of films to watch in the great outdoors this summer. Not much beats sitting with a crowd as spurred on by your favourite sport as you are, so why not watch the Wimbledon Tennis Championships or headlining football tournaments at one of the many outdoor sports screenings in London with a drink in hand. Head to Hyde Park to fill your ears with music live from artists, Kings Of Leon and Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers who are waiting for your arrival. If classical is more your calling then The Pavilion Café in Greenwich is the place to be, jazz, with a licensed bar and bustling BBQ are sure to tempt. Holland Park is the perfect setting for opera this summer, something for everyone with six levels of opera, from entry level to expert. If you are happy to provide your own entertainment but don’t have a garden in which to grill your chosen meat, try one of the many specifically designated BBQ sites across London; Wandsworth Park, Burgess Park and London Fields are waiting for you and your burgers. Ever fancied yourself a chess master? Now is your time to show off with your chums, Springfield Park in Hackney has a few outdoor chessboards to play the game in style. Lastly, if a safari isn’t quite in the budget this year, why not see the animals as the sun sets with a stroll around London Zoo. ZSL has a number of ‘Lates’ this summer, if the wild things aren’t enough, talks, music and themed tours are on offer too…

T

he Red Hook Criterium’s unique racing format challenges competitors over a short, technical race circuit riding brakeless, fixed-gear bikes traditionally raced on a velodrome. Attracting skilled athletes from multiple disciplines across the world all competitors need to possess street-tuned handling skills and exceptionally high levels of physical fitness to compete for a place on the podium. One of the most visually spectacular, spectator friendly, adrenalincharged bike races in the world, the RHC has rapidly grown since its humble beginnings in Red Hook, Brooklyn in 2008. Expanding first to Milan in 2010, followed by Barcelona in 2013, and making its return to London after its debut in 2015, it firmly establishes The Red Hook Crit as the world’s premiere track bike criterium. From its beginnings as a standalone bike race in Brooklyn, the Red Hook Crit expanded into an international racing championship series when Rockstar Games joined as title sponsor in 2013. Featuring races in Red Hook, Barcelona and Milan – each venue carefully selected to reflect the special culture of the original race in Brooklyn. The Red Hook Criterium championship series is unique in that it requires athletes to race multiple laps around a 1km (approx.) technical circuit on brakeless, fixed-gear track bikes. Taking cues from international motorsport, athletes begin by competing in timed qualification rounds to establish grid positions for the main event. The finals, traditionally raced at night, are held in front of thousands of spectators at each destination. Athletes accumulate points for finishing each race, travelling from one city to the next, vying for a position on the championship podium. With the continued, four-race schedule, riders will need to perform consistently if they are to contend for the series trophy with each race bringing its own dynamic throughout the season. The Red Hook Criterium Race Series has grown year on year since its inception in 2008, bringing global media attention, big crowds and increased interest from series sponsors. In 2016, The Red Hook Criterium, having already established firm roots in the cycling community, is ready to move forward again as one of the most compelling, competitive, spectator friendly sporting events in the world. The Peninsula is big, eclectic and original. A whole new swathe of London that brings together design with community with the river with film studios with stunning architecture against vast skies. A collection of seven neighbourhoods, 15,000 new homes and the sense of a new place inventing itself before your eyes. Not landlocked, and not an island, the Peninsula doesn’t pretend to be one thing – it’s more interesting than that. The Peninsula wants to attract first settlers who are bold, curious and interesting. People excited by the unparalleled opportunity to put their mark on a completely new part of London. This year the London race sees the return of 2016’s women’s winner, Olympic gold medallist Dani King, who will be trying to retain her winning title.

n recent years this area has seen a greater need for the image hungry media market, old companies that have been trading for years realising they need good media feed as more and more new young trendy brands are competing for their business. Lens & Hound are well placed to provide this service, for small independents wishing to take their first steps with a professional photo shoot or much larger campaign shoots over several days. From ladies fashion dresses, cashmere or jewellery to men’s jackets, tweeds and shoes. Step 1: the client would contact us directly or meet us via an introduction at a trade show such as Pure London or Moda in Birmingham. It’s always nice to see new emerging brands and many of our clients like to meet us and interact with our stand showcasing our images – the bigger the better. Step 2: we decide if it is best for you to attend the shoot, as many are more than happy to send us their product/s which leaves them free to carry on with the job of selling their brand. Organising and attending shoots takes up many hours of precious time. We then get a rough mood board of the theme the client is after. Step 3: we source the model. We have some great models on our books as well as working with several leading agencies. Once we have shown the client the model and all is agreed we will book a location or studio. All this is arranged by ourselves. Step 4: once the items arrive they are all steamed and hung on rails along with any other items we have sourced that we may need, i.e. shirts, shoes etc. If the client only sells ladies’ sandals, for example, we can make up the rest of what the model needs to be wearing. We do travel to a client’s location and can work with in-house models, it’s always good to preview models prior to a shoot. Sometimes we might feel that an in-house model does not reflect the brand or the campaign and may suggest alternative models who more closely resemble the ‘look’. Our aim is to sell our clients’ brand to the fullest potential, the more sales they generate the more money for bigger and better future photo shoots. Step 5: editing. This is professionally edited in-house. The lead time can be one week to ten days from the shoot date. Images are sent digitally, ready for our client to post. We back up with the high resolution version if needed for big posters or banners at some point. We work with brands of all sizes from one image to 40 which allows clients advantage of the flexibility to get constant fresh images all year round as new styles come in. Our real passion is lifestyle location shoots while keeping the focus on the brand, trying to make it both interesting and eye-catching this way our clients’ customers stop on that advert then research more to find the traditional product shots on websites. Social media is a huge marketing tool now, so the need for good images has never been more important. We pride ourselves on our abilities, from finding a great model and location to steaming all clothing on arrival, to getting our clients’ images the exposure they need to promote their brand.
