Of course, quite possibly the perfect summer day out would be watching a game of polo at one of the many polo clubs in the area. For lots of summer productions and events check out our three pages What to See, Where to Go guide for inspiration, written by our very own Jill Menghetti, We have been very fortunate to visit some lovely establishments over the last few weeks, in particular The Woburn Hotel nestling in the picturesque village on The Woburn Estate in Bedfordshire, perfect for a weekend break. We can thoroughly recommend their 2AA Rosettes restaurant Olivier’s. For Indian food lovers, check out Vineet Bhatia London, the progressive Indian restaurant in the heart of Chelsea, shaped by the imagination and unique experience of Michelin-starred Chef, Vineet Bhatia. his May, the V&A will open the first ever UK exhibition exploring the work of Cristóbal Balenciaga and his profound and continuing influence on modern fashion. It will be the first of its kind to look at his unique approach to making and will showcase pieces by his protégés and contemporary designers working in the same innovative way today. The exhibition marks the centenary of the opening of Balenciaga’s first fashion house in San Sebastian and the 80th anniversary of the opening of his famous fashion house in Paris Rather than a retrospective, Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion will focus in detail on the latter part of Balenciaga’s long career in the 1950s and 1960s, arguably one of his most creative periods as ‘the master’ of haute couture. It was during these years that he not only dressed some of the most iconic women of the time, but also introduced revolutionary shapes including the tunic, the sack, ‘baby doll’ and shift dress – all of which remain style staples today. Highlights will include ensembles made by Balenciaga for Hollywood actress Ava Gardner, dresses and hats belonging to socialite and 1960s fashion icon Gloria Guinness, and pieces worn by one of the world’s wealthiest women, Mona von Bismarck, who commissioned everything from ball-gowns to gardening shorts from the couturier. On display will be over 100 garments and 20 hats, many of which have never been on public display before. These will be accompanied by archive sketches, patterns, photographs, fabric samples and catwalk footage revealing Balenciaga’s uncompromising creativity. In addition x-rays, animated patterns and short films on couture-making processes will uncover the hidden details that made his work so exceptional. The exhibition will draw mostly on the V&A’s fashion holdings – the largest collection of Balenciaga in the UK. The collection was initiated for the Museum by Cecil Beaton in the 1970s. Cassie Davies-Strodder, V&A exhibition curator, said: “Cristóbal Balenciaga was one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century. Revered by his contemporaries, including Coco Chanel and Hubert de Givenchy, his exquisite craftsmanship, pioneering use of fabric and innovative cutting set the tone for the modernity of the late 20th century fashion. At the height of his success in the 1950s when Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ was the dominant force in fashion, Balenciaga went against the grain to revolutionise the female silhouette, creating a more modern, architectural aesthetic that stood away from the body rather than restricting it. For the first time, this exhibition will take a forensic look at Balenciaga’s most iconic ensembles from the V&A’s collections to reveal what made his designs so exceptional. His lasting impact on fashion will be explored through the work of those who trained with him and through recent garments by designers including Molly Goddard, Demna Gvasalia and J.W. Anderson who reflect the legacy of his vision today.” Two unique collaborations have helped the V&A to reveal the secrets of Balenciaga’s ingenuity, and will feature in the exhibition. For the first time the V&A has used x-ray technology to take a forensic look at the hidden details inside Cristóbal Balenciaga’s garments. These x-rays, made with x-ray artist Nick Veasey, show structures invisible to the naked eye, including dress weights strategically placed to determine the exact hang of the skirt in one of Balenciaga’s most minimal designs, and boning in dress bodices, dispelling the myth that he did not use such structures. In partnership with the London College of Fashion, pattern cutting students have taken patterns from some of the most iconic Balenciaga garments in the V&A’s collection. These have been digitised and animated to show how these building blocks come together to form the finished piece. In a number of cases, the patterns reveal that the main body of the garment has been crafted from one single piece of fabric, demonstrating Balenciaga’s mastery of materials. Three of these animations will be displayed alongside Balenciaga’s original garments to give a deeper understanding of each. Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion will be organised around three main sections: ‘Front of House’, including Balenciaga’s salons, behind the scenes in Balenciaga’s ‘Workrooms’ and the lasting impact of ‘Balenciaga’s Legacy’. The Balenciaga brand still references its founder today, yet his influence spreads far wider. The ‘Legacy’ section will feature the work of over 30 designers of the last 50 years tracing the influence of this most revered figure in fashion right up to the present day. Themes include an exploration of his minimalist aesthetic reflected in the work of his former apprentices André Courrèges and Emanuel Ungaro, and more recently revived by designers such as Phoebe Philo for Celine and in the strong lines of J.W. Anderson. Balenciaga’s perfectionism and attention to detail are reflected in the work of Hubert de Givenchy and Erdem. His pattern cutting and explorations of volume can be seen in the work of Molly Goddard and Demna Gvasalia, while his creative use of new materials is referenced in the work of former Balenciaga creative director Nicolas Ghesquière. Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion opens on 27 May 2017 and will be accompanied by a new V&A publication and a series of related events, courses and creative workshops.

Important factors to consider when buying swimwear With summer just around the corner, we are selling a lot of swimwear now at Odette and we are reminded of what is important to consider when purchasing your holiday wardrobe. There are four main points to consider particularly for the swimwear:

Fashion Do you go for a bikini or a one piece swimsuit?

The swimsuit is seeing a huge revival at the moment and is very on trend. You can now choose from the bandeau, cut-out, one-shoulder, cross back, low back, low front. There is so much variation and colour going on that ladies of all ages are going for the full one piece as the cut can give a more flattering silhouette and there are so many fabulous prints and embellishments around that you definitely don’t lose out on style.

Fit Very important. You will always need support but do you

need padded, non padded, cup sized with underwires or an itsy, bitsy triangle style? That will all depend on your size and shape. We can advise and offer a good selection of all of the above and as bra fitters we are perfectly experienced in advising on the best fitting swimwear. Some of our swimwear is made by lingerie brands and so they should know a thing or two about fit.

Fabric You need to not only consider the colour or print but

also the quality of the fabric. Thin, flimsy lycras will not stand the test of time and will stretch out of shape or become transparent. Look for double thickness lycras in the best quality swimwear.

Functionality What do you need the swimwear for, is

it for practical purposes or for posing around the pool? Do you want to expose as much as possible for a great tan or need a more modest option for a particular trip with family? Will you be running around with young children for example. Is it an exotic tropical resort or a buckets and spades holiday? Then above all else is comfort, you will feel more confident and gorgeous if you are comfortable. So bear in mind the above, give yourself time to have a proper fitting session and hopefully come and let us at Odette help you choose the perfect piece of swimwear. aunched in November 2016, Vineet Bhatia London (VBL) is the progressive Indian restaurant that takes diners on a culinary exploration of India, shaped by the imagination and unique experience of Michelinstarred chef, Vineet Bhatia. Forever evolving, VBL is the first Indian restaurant to eschew the traditional A La Carte offering, serving only their signature Experience Menu. The inspiration behind the dishes extends across the length and breadth of the country, bringing together the flavours and cooking techniques of many regions onto a single plate, melding flavours from across the regions of India with Vineet’s signature twists in the form of European ingredients and refined presentation. Set in a restored Georgian townhouse off Kings Road in Chelsea, the 32seat restaurant offers an intimate and relaxed setting, reflecting the heritage and culinary vision of its owners. This vision extends to the new Experience Menu, which showcases dishes that cross borders, evoke nostalgia and harness exciting flavour combinations to forge a new direction for Indian cuisine in London. Determined to change the perception of Indian cuisine, Vineet was the first to introduce an Indian tasting menu, presenting plated Indian food served over a series of courses. VBL’s Experience Menu is the culmination of this journey, bringing together Vineet’s Mumbai heritage, global travels and British residence in a refined and unique tasting menu. At £105 per person, guests can enjoy a tasting menu experience like no other – the menu proceeds with a selection of delicate canapés and ends with an elegant array of desserts. Dishes include Vineet’s unique take on Duck Korma, Patiala Chicken and Chocolate Cure, and can be enjoyed with a wine flight for an additional £70 (£175 per person). VBL’s first-floor private dining rooms — named Wittet and Lutyens — make an entrancing setting for anyone looking to host an exclusive dinner with colleagues or a celebratory meal with friends or family. Themed to reflect the owners’ dual Indian/British heritage and bringing to life the townhouse’s original features, Wittet and Lutyens seat 8 and 12, respectively, with a connecting door offering the possibility of renting out both rooms at once. Part of VBL’s private dining package also includes access to an unparalleled outdoor atrium terrace, a lovely spot for drinks and canapé receptions during the warmer months.

Sofitel

London St James

A

by Lorraine Fleming

rriving at the Sofitel London St James you immediately feel enveloped by the friendliness of the ground floor staff. With our luggage safely sent to our room, check-in was straightforward and we noticed can be done in one of a number of languages. Our luxury room was on the fourth floor. It was spacious with room to sit and relax as well as the more obvious sleeping arrangement. An amply sized bathroom had both a bath and separate shower. The hotel is ideally situated just off Pall Mall, near Buckingham Palace, and only a short walk from Piccadilly Underground station and is very accessible for shopping in the West End and visiting all the main tourist areas. The concierge, of course, is very knowledgeable and the staff are all superbly helpful. They will organise anything from tickets to taxis for the guests. The Sofitel London St James has the very inviting SoSPA occupying three floors, with marble walled halls and tall arched windows that let in the daylight, offering all the relaxation that you might need after a hard working week. You can indulge for an afternoon, a full day or even a full week and enjoy your chosen spa treatments. The Balcon restaurant, I can safely say, offers one of best eating experiences I’ve had in London. We started our culinary adventure with the Seared Scottish Scallops, pea tortellini and lobster beurre blanc which was absolutely delicious. We then moved on to the Sea Bream and Braised Welsh Lamb – both dishes again were executed and delivered above our expectations. We both agreed that we would seek out The Balcon whenever we were in London to eat. Again the staff were all so amazingly knowledgeable, and helpful, so much so that we opted for dessert to be delivered to our room and decadently ate in bed whilst watching Comic Relief on TV. The hotel bar, the St James Bar, is a great space for relaxing and socialising. The design was inspired by Coco Chanel’s 1920’s Parisian apartment and you can enjoy vintage, or the hotel’s signature cocktail, wines and champagnes. You can order a main dish all day long from the bar menu, or maybe have a platter to share or a pre-theatre meal in these delightful surroundings. Next morning we were faced with a phenomenal choice for breakfast. However, as we had eaten quite lavishly the night before, we chose the healthy breakfast option. This included an egg-white-only omelette, but we did add a not-so-healthy black pudding slice each, a particular favourite, which probably rendered our healthy breakfast option null and void! This beautiful hotel is a joy to stay in. It has everything to offer and we look forward to returning again there very soon.

The World’s Your Oyster

T

HERE’S literally a world to choose from when it comes to marrying abroad and why more couples than ever before are saying ‘I do’ in far-flung and exotic locations. A ‘destination’ wedding package with a specialist tour operator offers excellent value for money as you take a back seat and leave it to the experts to take the strain of organising your big day. And now that independent travel companies have joined the market to offer a more tailored approach to booking, there’s an even greater chance you will find a romantic package that’s perfect for you. “We recognise that planning a wedding overseas has changed over the past few years. More couples want to plan the details with our wedding experts in advance rather than with a wedding co-ordinator when they get to the resort, which is traditionally how it’s done,” says wedding planner Sam Berry in The Kuoni Worldwide Trends Report 2017.

Having decided to tie the knot overseas – whether it’s in an iconic city, on safari or on a beautiful beach – here are some practical tips to kick off your wedding abroad planning: Decide the date and a wedding budget. Do your research before choosing your destination, checking things like what will the weather be like if it’s a long-haul destination and whether your vaccinations are up-to-date. Make sure your wedding date is confirmed before you book your guests’ holiday arrangements. Get copies of all the relevant legal requirements and paperwork that’s needed. (When you’re married, request an extra copy of your wedding certificate as it’s easier to obtain a copy at the venue, rather than when you return home.) Check with your airline how best to carry your wedding outfits and the additional luggage you may want to take. Organise travel insurance to cover expensive items, including rings, photographs and those all-important wedding outfits.

3 The outdoor Grotto at 2 Rayavadee in Thailand 4 The beach at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa, Jamaica 5 On the shores of Lake Louise, Banff in Canada

Arrange to have your wedding ceremony videoed. This can really bring it to life for those who couldn’t make it when you return home. (Don’t forget to back-up your wedding photos.) Have fun – remember that your wedding abroad will last longer than just one day, so grab a map and enjoy planning this unique experience. Thomson & Scott Skinny Prosecco is huge hit in UK... ... and at forefront of raising awareness of what consumers are drinking

homson launched Thomson & Scott Skinny Champagne and Skinny Prosecco as part of her singular mission to encourage consumers to demand more information about what goes into their wine. “We’re all obsessed with what’s in our food, but rarely do consumers ask what’s in our bottle,” says Thomson. “I have been demanding the industry focus much more on transparency in labelling - particularly in respect of sugar content, manufacturing processes and whether it is vegan or even vegetarian. Thomson & Scott Skinny Prosecco, which contains up to 7g of sugar per litre, was the number one searched product on Selfridges’ website, including the food and drink, tech, beauty and fashion sections. It continues to be Selfridges’ biggest selling wine online. Customers have also had the chance to upgrade from business to first class with Thomson & Scott Skinny Champagne Grand Cru Brut and Rosé – which contains up to 0.1g of sugar per litre, developed with the help of celebrated French Champagne producer Alexandre Penet. Thomson & Scott Skinny Champagne Grand Cru Brut and Rosé, and Thomson & Scott Skinny Prosecco are vegan with the Prosecco also made using 100% organic Glera grapes. Thomson & Scott founder Amanda Thomson was raised on a vegetarian and no-sugar diet by a health conscious mother who thought sugar was the devil – and it turns out, she was right! Following a successful career as an Arts Broadcaster for the BBC, Amanda gained a Diploma in Wine from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Compelled by her love of quality Champagne and keen interest in healthy living, Amanda sought out Alexandre Penet to develop Thomson & Scott Skinny Champagne. Amanda says: “I was raised on a sugar-free diet and realised that everyone always asks what’s in their food but never what’s in their wine. I was amazed at the amount of sugar in wine and how little information we’re given about what’s in the bottle. “I’ve brought a brand to market that offers a top quality portfolio of Champagne, Prosecco and sparkling wine with up to 7g of sugar per litre. Our Prosecco is also certified organic and vegan. We’re setting the drinks world alight with our transparent approach to drinking.” Thomson & Scott’s range is available for purchase by the case via thomsonandscott.com, or by the bottle from Selfridges’ stores and online. It’s also on sale through 31 Dover, Harvey Nichols, Fenwick, Dalloway Terrace, The Roof at Selfridges, The Mondrian Hotel and Veeno as well as many other top UK hotels and restaurants. Thomson & Scott Skinny Champagne Grand Cru Brut contains up to 0.1g of sugar per litre and is RRP £50 bottle. Thomson & Scott Skinny Prosecco contains up to 7g of sugar per litre added in the production process, is certified Organic and vegan and is RRP £17.99 bottle.

A

recent art project led me to create a house entirely of greetings cards. While doing so I discovered a tatty pile of Father’s Day cards that the children had sent their father over the years. I sat down and gingerly opened the first one that came to hand. The years tumbled back and the memories flooded in. I remembered the children’s joy in creating them and their father’s in receiving them. For us, as a family, Father’s Day has always been about the card, preferably homemade. Each card pinpointed a time in their lives and that of their father’s. The first Father’s Day is always special and worthy of recognition. Following the birth of our first child, I sent a card to my husband that reflected all the excitement and joy generated by the baby’s arrival. It celebrated the fact that my husband’s status had changed, he was now a father, responsible for all that entailed. The next card demonstrated the intensity and frustration required to form letters for the first time and the inevitable back to front formation as our young son signed his name. Other cards were made at school; tissue paper overload and an avalanche of glitter. Then the adoring card; ‘World’s Best Dad’ and the proclamation of love, ‘I Love you Daddy’. And then, when the eldest was aged about 9 or 10, the cheeky card ‘Happy Farters Day’ and the glee with which it was delivered. Numerous other cards followed and as the years passed the message contained within hardly changed. It may have become more constrained and respectful, but it remained a simple declaration of love. Father’s Day is celebrated in the UK and a host of other countries on the third Sunday in June. This year it is on June 18th. Dates vary for some countries. Its origin is disputed but the Father’s Day we know today is an American invention. The first celebration of Father’s Day in June was in 1910. An influential figure in the establishment of the day was Sonora Smart Dodd. She was inspired to create such a day in honour of her father, Jackson Smart, a single parent who, single-handedly, raised six children. Her desire was to create a day to honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood. In 1966 President Lyndon B Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers by designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. In 1972 the then president, Richard Nixon, declared Father’s Day a public holiday. Unfortunately that is not the case in the UK, but this should not deter the important recognition of fatherhood. If you have a father whom you love, let him know this Father’s Day. Dads claim that they do not want a fuss but, secretly, they do. You could buy a gift, there are many to choose from, or simply send a card. You could pick up the phone and call or, better still, pay him a visit. He will be glad you did, despite protestations to the contrary.

enny Blanc used her natural flair for design when she created the world acclaimed “Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons” in 1983, with her then husband Raymond Blanc. Following this success, she founded her own interior design practice simply called “Jenny Blanc”. Her varied portfolio spans country homes, town houses, apartments as well as exotic commissions in the Caribbean where Jenny also has a showroom, on the West Coast of Barbados. “Our aim is to be a centre of design excellence with a secondto-none service and to create beautiful, distinctive homes for our clients.” Jenny Blanc

Her distinctive style and exquisite use of colour has brought international success and in December 2012, competing against stiff competition from design practices across the world, Jenny Blanc was presented with the coveted award of Worldwide Winner – Best Interior Design Private Residence at the International Property Awards. In the early days of Jenny Blanc Interiors she met her design director, Sue Thomas-Richardson, a Barbadian interior designer, and together with showroom director, Chrissie Marshall they have created an exceptional interior design business which focuses on the clients’ hopes and aspirations for their homes. Jenny recognises that clients need an efficient, all-encompassing design and project management service underpinned by an experienced and creative design team and this, together with an exceptional knowledge of the best, most beautiful fabrics and furnishings on the market, wins her clients’ confidence that she will design the home they have always wished for. Jenny is always personally involved in each project to ensure the finished works meet with her exacting standards. “Our work includes beautiful old country houses in the UK as well as chic London apartments. Each project allows us to create entirely unique homes for our clients that go beyond their aspirations. This is what makes our job so special.” Jenny Blanc Contemporary, classic or more traditional each project has the Jenny Blanc design style encapsulating a sensitive use of colour and rooms which flow seamlessly from one to the next creating a peaceful and comfortable ambience. Equally at home working on period country houses, smart modern apartments in London or Barbadian holiday retreats, the design team take their inspiration from a client’s wish list and the style and location of the property to create the ideal home.

City Living

City Living is a contemporary garden on several levels imagined in a typical urban apartment block. While these dwellings are often cold and slightly forbidding in appearance they could easily be transformed with the addition of attractive green outdoor spaces for residents use with comfortable and sheltered seating areas surrounded by appealing planting and tranquil water features. This garden could be added to existing buildings or easily inserted into new builds to effectively ‘green up’ city spaces and provide valuable habitat for wildlife and birds. The garden is set on three levels with a mezzanine floor and is positioned directly adjacent to the dwellings making use of the space beneath and alongside the building, providing an interesting and ‘green’ route to and from the resident’s homes. A stairwell clad with back lit concrete featuring cantilevered steps and a perforated metal screen provide stability to the structure whilst allowing light to filter down to the lower levels. This ensures each level can be effectively gardened and utilised for recreation. Green walls and a water feature are incorporated into the scheme to add a sense of tranquillity and movement. The hard landscaping will include sustainably sourced bamboo decking from Loknan , luxury decorative tiles and a specialist back lit concrete which will be particularly eye catching when the garden is lit in the evenings. Two Anglepoise® giant outdoor lamps will light up the garden while solid teak stools by Mark Gabbertas serve as stylish seating on the mezzanine. The idea of greening up city spaces is one that is close to Kate’s heart. She has explored this theme twice before at the RHS Chelsea Flower shows in 2009 and 2013 receiving highly coveted Gold medals on both occasions as well as a ‘Best in Category’ for her 2009 ECO Chic Garden. Her 2013 Show Garden ‘The Wasteland’ transformed an abandoned industrial site into a public garden, reusing the old structures and waste materials found within. This garden resonated with the public and RHS judges alike who awarded it a Gold Medal. Please visit www.kategouldgardens.com for images of Kate’s previous RHS Chelsea Gardens.

Anthology launches two glamorous upholstery fabrics to accompany its luxurious wallpaper collections.

nspired by the intricate patterns and fine textures discovered in the natural landscape, Anthology’s latest upholstery collection consists of two innovative fabric designs named after Japanese words with simplicity at their heart. Hibiki, meaning ‘sound’, or ‘echo’ is a stunning, two-tone viscose and polyester velvet. With a subtle, ribbed texture this design recreates what an echo would look like, should you be able to see it! The undulating, origami-style pattern interplays with the subtle, metallic colours, of which there are 20 tempting variations to choose from. Each colourway has an elegant mix of bright accent tones and sophisticated neutrals and is suitable for domestic and contract upholstery. Ikko, which means ‘fragment’, is a plush, 100% polyester velvet, inspired by the crevices found in ancient tree bark, and fissures created in the arid, cracked earth. This covetable design is available in 19 stunning, trendinspired colourways and is the perfect complement to other designs in the Anthology collection. Ikko is suitable for upholstery and drapes. The collection is available via a network of stockists nationally and internationally.

Interview/ Business Profile with

Hayley Bystram Bowes-Lyon Partnership

I understand that Bowes-Lyon is a dating agency with a difference. What sets your company aside from other such agencies, Hayley? We describe ourselves as a modern dating agency with old-fashioned values. By meeting everyone personally, and taking the time to understand our members’ lives and needs, we become trusted confidantes. By not using technological shortcuts, we believe there is more heart and soul in the process. We match people with people, not profiles with profiles. We offer a friendly and relaxed service and we make our members feel at ease throughout the dating process. We talk through each introduction at length and take feedback after each date. Taking the time to truly get to know our members allows us to make the dating process more enjoyable and less daunting for them, and it allows us to matchmake our members more successfully.

I have read that you have worked in America during your working career. Which State were you in? And did the experience that you gained there influence you setting up your own business? I spent my early career in Florida, working in a very exclusive and huge resort. Guests were often VIPs and were affluent, well known or both. They expected the best. I was struck by the high standard and the consistency of customer service. Nothing was too much trouble and every need was catered for – the customers’ demands were met before they even asked. If I’m honest, I thought it was brilliant and so simple. I think America’s level of customer service is un-matched and I wanted to bring that back to the UK and channel it into my business. Now, delivering first class customer service is paramount to what I do.

42 the riverside journals

How do you access applicants on registering and do you conduct any special checks? All applicants, whether in their 30s or 70s, are met for an in-depth interview before we offer them membership. This helps us establish whether they are a good fit for the agency and whether we are a good fit for them. They provide photo identification, and a sign a mutual confidentiality agreement with us to maintain privacy and discretion on both sides. Our fees range from £8,000 - £12,000 + VAT per annum. As well as enabling us to deliver incredible results and customer service, the fee acts as a filter to ensure that all members are serious about committing to a relationship.

Do you have lots of success stories? Or is there perhaps a memorable story you can tell us – maybe about specific clients that have kept in touch with you? Success stories are why I do what I do! I love nothing more than hearing about an impending marriage or, even better, getting sent a baby-scan photograph! I love that families have been created by matches that I have made. My older members, who are perhaps divorced or have been widowed, are often quite daunted about the thought of dating again. I love to hear their stories of the happy dates they have been on, or new places they have visited or holidays they have taken with their dates. I’ve had many members say it feels like getting a second chance at life at an age where they thought it wouldn’t happen. One of my favourite stories is from a female member in her fifties, who was being charmed by one of our gentlemen. He had whisked her away to some fabulous locations. She texted me one day to say they were on their best date yet sitting in the garden on a sunny Sunday morning, eating breakfast and reading the newspapers. They were so comfortable just being in each other’s company that they hadn’t felt the need to make conversation; they just sat there smiling at each other over the top of their papers. When it comes to love and romance it really is the simple things that count.

Can you talk us through the steps in creating a good profile. I write all of my members’ profiles for them. After our in-depth interview, we get a great understanding about our members’ backgrounds, upbringing, lifestyle, relationship history, hobbies, interests, their morals, values and future aspirations. We talk through all potential introductions over the telephone in the first instance then follow with a profile and a photograph of them. When writing the profiles, I try to convey who my members are, in terms of their personalities, rather than what they do. People are surprisingly similar in what they do and what they like, so talking about who they are in a profile –their traits, their qualities, their hopes and wishes – makes them more individual.

Is your dating service only available for people living in or around London? Our Head Office is in Central London and we have a second office in Surrey. Our members tend to be based in London or the Home Counties. We do have members in Scotland, Europe and even America, but the condition is that they have an affiliation with London or the South-East and spend at least 50% of their time in these areas.

How do you encourage new and slightly timid or maybe skeptical prospective applicants? I don’t think there is any one of my members who hasn’t found the dating process a little bit daunting at one time or another Dating is so much easier when you are relaxed and don’t over-think the process. We ensure that all our members go into an introduction armed with all the information they need and encourage them to enjoy meeting new people and trying new experiences. They know that we are always at the end of the phone or on email. I try to remind all my members that they are all in the same boat – they all just want to meet that one person to spend their lives with and that puts everyone on an equal level.

One of my goals is to raise peoples’ awareness about personal matchmaking agencies. Elements of matchmaking have been around for centuries, yet there are many people who are unaware of what a personal matchmaking/dating agency can offer. Technology and online sites are such a dominant part of the dating industry that people don’t seem to know that there are other, perhaps more suitable, options that are out there. I think that both online dating sites and matchmaking agencies will become more niche in the markets they serve. Sites such as Match.com and PlentyofFish have such a diversity of members that the filter process to find someone like you is time-consuming and difficult. There is an ever-growing emergence of niche dating opportunities such as Jewish Dating or Bowes-Lyon Partnership – dating for successful professionals. The current extreme examples range from Bristlr (dating people with beards) to Tindog (dating for dog-lovers)! I think dating businesses will shrink their market reach to improve their quality and success rates. We currently get over 65% of new business through personal recommendations of members. Our intention is to build on that even further, so that we are the agency professional singles turn to when they’re looking for love.

And, finally, how do you see your company, and indeed the whole dating agency business, progressing in the next five years?

Les Classiques de HJ

With its new collection of fifty Essences, Henry Jacques is resurrecting the beauty of a gesture.

ince its inception, nearly half a century ago, Henry Jacques has aspired to invest everyone who so desires with a style of excellence. Here perfume reigns supreme in its most noble function, conjuring up powerful memories or whispering one’s presence. Despite its peerless respect for tradition, the Henry Jacques Perfume House is resolutely avant-garde. It draws on time-honoured codes to design contemporary elegance. In a blending of balance and boldness, the simple, delicate beauty of timeless perfumes meets the complexity of creative genius. Over the years, Henry Jacques has taken up a singular challenge: to form a selection of perfumes representative of the immense olfactive work accomplished. The simple name of Les Classiques de HJ conveys the achievements of a lifetime. The entire diversity of the Henry Jacques legacy needed to be portrayed in a collection accessible to all. These fifty fragrances are like first steps at the gateway to the Henry Jacques universe. The purity of the Essences, one of the foundations of the Henry Jacques identity, brings back an elegant gesture forgotten for too long: that of applying perfume to the skin. Such a fine collection could not have been conceived without experience and knowledge painstakingly transmitted over several generations. Each nectar has enhanced the personality of a woman or man of taste. A universal appeal seems written into the formulas, speaking to all with the force of a memory or an impression of life. The perfumer becomes a matchmaker between customers and the ideal they seek day after day. The nuances of the Les Classiques de HJ collection are beautifully set off by the sleek lines of the new crystal bottle. Christophe Tollemer’s artistic direction opted for minimalism to let the deep, rich sparkle of the essences shine through, contained by a design of rare distinction. By harmonizing the Henry Jacques codes with the majestic proportions that are a hallmark of his work, the architect has truly transcended a technical and artistic challenge. Each Classique is presented in a case that expresses the same philosophy of utter refinement free from fad or ostentation. The varnished wood case is generously embellished with gold leaf. It opens to reveal the bottle delicately resting on a silk cushion.

When did you decide to become a surgeon and why? I grew up in Malaysia and come from a family of doctors, so medicine has always been a part of my life and in my blood. After graduating as a doctor in the UK, I worked alongside some incredibly skilled surgical colleagues in the NHS. I enjoyed the skill of operating to improve both the functional and aesthetic outcome of skin to help patients, which I found incredibly rewarding. I followed my dream to be a surgeon and have spent 12 years in surgery within the NHS of which six years was in reconstructive plastic surgery.

Miss Sherina Balaratnam MBBS, MRCS, MSc (UCL) Surgeon and Cosmetic Doctor

What made you decide to launch S-Thetics in Beaconsfield and when was that? I had been visiting Beaconsfield with family and friends for over 10 years and it’s such a beautiful place. I finally moved here three years ago so starting my own clinic here was a natural evolution. I wanted to create a clinical and personal space for patients to benefit from the latest medical aesthetic treatments which I believe to be some of the best in my profession, and that I have personally put together in a unique way based on my knowledge and experience in surgery. I launched S-Thetics in May 2015 together with our Town Crier and Mayor and am delighted to have received such a warm welcome to integrate within our local community. What do you like most about being based in Beaconsfield? Beaconsfield Old Town has a beautiful charm and history to it. When I realised that the Beaconsfield May Fair had been running every year since 1269, it made me realise even more what a special and unique town this is. I like the contrast of the history that surrounds me outside my clinic, and the cutting-edge technology that surrounds me inside my clinic. I enjoy being able to offer patients the access to these latest treatments without potentially the need for them to travel into London. What’s the best thing about your job? My patients. I enjoy the daily interaction with my patients and each is unique. Every clinic day is varied and my team and I enjoy the variety of patients, who we see and treat on a daily basis. Establishing and building relationships is a vital and enjoyable part of what we do and watching our patients’ progress with their results and showing them this is incredibly rewarding. I now purely specialise in non-surgical aesthetic medicine and there is so much that can be achieved non-invasively, starting from the basic concept of addressing skin wellness. The field of aesthetic medicine has moved forwards dramatically and is continuously evolving at a fast pace. I am privileged to combine the knowledge that I have learnt during my time in reconstructive plastic surgery, to be able to help my patients achieve their aesthetic goals.

Marlborough House, 45 Wycombe End, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, HP9 1LZ 01494 670 990 info@sthetics.co.uk www.sthetics.co.uk

If you hadn’t have become a surgeon, what would you have been? A dermatologist. Or a chef. When you’re not working, where do you like to spend your time in the local area? Taking a long walk in the woods in Buckinghamshire followed by a leisurely pub lunch with friends and family in the countryside. What’s your guilty pleasure? Holidays with my husband. I work hard and have to remind myself to take some time out sometimes too. What item or person could you not live without? My SPF. And my Pug. What’s the best piece of skincare/beauty advice you give people? Ultraviolet (UV) damage from the sun’s rays can cause up to 80% of premature skin aging, so don’t forget your SPF. And ditch the face wipes.

These days, UK spas have embraced a holistic approach to wellbeing and given it a luxurious twist. ‘Are we our own worst enemy?’

T

he choices we make shape everything we do. They determine our successes, but also predetermine our failures. We make decisions based on the facts as we know them, but, in order to make good choices, we must differentiate between what is actual fact and what is self-limiting belief. Statements that begin with ‘I don’t /can’t, I’m not /mustn’t…’ all need challenging with the caveat, ‘Why?’ By believing, as fact, something that is actually only opinion, we can block ourselves from trying anything new and challenging. While this does reduce the possibility of failure, if we never aspire, or never fail, we will never learn to do new things, never challenge our horizons, never leave our comfort zone… When we say we can’t do something, we immediately restrict our capabilities. Often these self-limiting beliefs come from the opinions of others – I was told that I couldn’t sing by a music teacher as a child and for many years this belief held me back. One day, after a few drinks, I was persuaded to do a turn in a karaoke bar – talk about a baptism of fire! But from then on, I didn’t care if I could or I couldn’t, what I worked out was that I enjoy singing, and good or bad I was going to carry on! Being limited by the opinions of others is one thing, but it pales into insignificance against the impact of the restrictions we place on ourselves. We tell ourselves we don’t deserve something or we set our expectations at a low level knowing that we will achieve this minimum with little effort. We need to ask ourselves, WHY? Why do we hold ourselves back in this way? Would life not be much more exciting, would we not be more successful, happier people if we embraced life more and just gave it a go? My challenge to you is: dance as if no one is watching and sing as if no one is listening! Be your own best friend, not worst enemy!

The increase in anxiety due to political events

T

here is an increasing level of overall anxiety in the population of the United Kingdom as well as around the world. Upheavals in political events, the Brexit referendum results and the increase in what is seen as global terrorism are giving rise to a very real and very concerning change in the emotional status of the country. While this anxiety is apparent across all age groups, it is particularly evident in the younger population. In a recent poll completed by The Prince’s Trust, 58% of the total 2,215 individuals ages 16 to 25 reported feeling fear for their future based on the political events of the last year. This is a significant increase of 41% reporting fear over the future from the same survey completed in 2016. However, it is not just youth that worries about the future. In studies completed in the over-25 adult population, increasing numbers of people reported fear of loss of employment, fear of personal harm or injury and fear of lack of ability to support themselves and their families in the future. An increasing number of people across the UK and around the world are reporting fear of terrorism and a very real fear that the governments of their respective countries have no power or ability to provide safety and a positive life for their citizens. Contributing Factors Many leading experts on anxiety point to the constant stream of reports, both real and “fake news”, as a triggering point for anxiety. People tend to listen to television news and engage in discussions on social media with like-minded individuals, which creates an echo chamber of both facts and misinformation that can escalate emotional distress. Constantly being bombarded with images, news and social commentary about the negatives in the world and in local communities also creates anxiety. This is often without any balance in hearing about the positives in the community and creates a falsely negative view of how the world is changing and becoming more hostile and unwelcoming. Helpful Changes Anxiety that is impacting your ability to enjoy life, to work, study and interact with others is serious and should be treated by a psychotherapist or a counsellor. Often the issues of today are triggering related traumatic events in the past. By exploring these issues in a safe, supportive therapeutic environment, it is possible to release the anxiety and develop healthy coping mechanisms to avoid anxiety in the future. Several coping mechanisms can be helpful for anyone to use when there is generalised anxiety about what is going on in their world around them. Changes in viewing and using social media can be helpful to avoid constantly being bombarded with negative and dire messages that are often incorrect and false. Finding trustworthy sources for news and avoiding the highly-politicised sites can be very beneficial in obtaining balanced information. Setting personal goals and working towards positives in life is also an excellent option in focusing on the things you want to experience in life rather than the “what ifs” of worry and anxiety. These goals can include personal and professional goals and should include building in mental and physical health activities such as mindfulness, meditation, regular exercise and healthy living and lifestyle choices.

inding love, when you’re looking for a serious relationship, whether you’re in your 30s, 40s 50s or 60s, can be challenging to say the least. The chances of randomly bumping into a like-minded potential partner in the street, at a party or a work event are remote, especially when you have a busy life, a successful career or are divorced or widowed. Step in Hayley Bystram, who spotted a gap in the market for the return of the old-fashioned matchmaking service, and set up elite dating agency Bowes-Lyon Partnership. Since its inception in 2009 Hayley has been quietly making a name for the agency successfully introducing eligible, high-calibre, accomplished single people who are looking for love and a serious relationship. The secret of Hayley’s success is quite simple; she spends time really getting to know her clients. She meets each prospective member for a complimentary and informal chat over coffee, before they join, to ensure that Bowes-Lyon is right for them, and they are right for Bowes-Lyon. The elite dating agency has won itself a reputation for tact, confidentiality and unrivalled attention to detail. With annual memberships starting at £8,000+VAT, members can expect a bespoke service that is tailored to their individuals needs and works around their personal schedules. Every step of the match-making process is handled with the utmost delicacy; from initial profile creation to chats with potential suitors. Discretion and confidentiality is of paramount importance at Bowes-Lyon Partnership. Rather than showcase profiles and photographs online, all member information and details are securely stored and shared only with potential matches. Only first names are shared with introductions so that each member is in control of their personal information and can reveal details about themselves at a pace that suits them. Hayley Bystram, Founder and Director of Bowes-Lyon Partnership, says, “As a leading dating agency, we specialise in bringing together accomplished individuals who are looking for a committed, meaningful relationship. Testing Times by Claire Quirk

Early to mid summer is a beautiful time of the year for getting out and about, brushing off the cold winter blues and spring showers and freshening up for the longer, warm days ahead. However, for thousands of children and young people it is the most stressful time of the year. Coping with exams can be a whole family affair but there are few things you can do to help. Here are my top five tips for supporting your child through their exams:

Revision timetable Know the exam timetable and create a revision plan. Organise revision into small manageable chunks, from 20 minutes up to an hour long, depending on the subject and age of your child. Build in regular breaks with a burst of different activities to refresh and reward them. Plan ahead, if you have significant family events during the exam period then make sure the whole family has time to enjoy them.

Essential books and resources Invest some time and money in supporting your child with the tools they will need for effective revision. Check they have all the relevant books and texts they need for study and order them well in advance. Buy some new stationery such as highlighter pens and funky notepads so that revision notes are more fun, creative and interesting.

Maintain a balanced daily routine Keep home life as calm and pleasant as possible. Avoid possible conflict and help siblings understand what their brother or sister is going through. Make sure there is time for relaxation and exercise, encourage your child to maintain their exercise routine such as the gym or team sports or go out with the family for walks. Wind down at the end of a hard working day, the mind needs to be relaxed so they can get a good night’s sleep. As well as planning for healthy meals make sure there are always plenty of healthy snacks in the house as well as the odd treat.

Be there Plan to spend as much time at home as you can, and let them know you are there if they need you. Talk through their day with them but try to avoid reviewing every detail of every paper. Allow them time to express their thoughts and experiences then move on. Listen to your child rather than lead the conversation.

Make sure your child knows you will love them whatever the outcome of the exams. As well as being encouraging, reassure them by discussing different options and routes to achieve their goals. Remember to make allowances for stressful behaviour and praise all positive efforts. Although bribery isn’t advisory, try and offer incentives along the way and when the exams are over the whole family can enjoy a special treat.

Musical Magic The Royal Albert Hall

he power of song and choral singing has been recognised, explored and celebrated over the last few years by the nation’s favourite choirmaster, Gareth Malone, through programs such as The Choir and Military Wives. The children of Buckinghamshire continue to be given this opportunity through their schools which culminates in a bi-annual concert at the Albert Hall. This year the performance was titled ‘Songs for Life’ and brought together nearly 2000 children, from 52 primary schools, who sang and played instruments they learnt in whole class practical music lessons. The children sang a collection of songs called ‘Circles and Cycles’ which told the story of our memories and own life story and ‘Songs for the Seasons’ a song cycle on children’s poems by Enid Blyton. The finale of the concert was a piece commissioned for this concert by Marlow based composer Sheila Wilson. Bringing a performance of this scale and quality together is only possible with the commitment and drive of all the music leaders in Bucks. The focus is on singing and reflects the value that the music educators in Bucks place upon that activity. The Director of Buckinghamshire Learning Trust Music, Paul Guenault highlights: “The depth of musical understanding that the children gain from singing in groups is incalculable”. He goes on to explain how children develop advanced listening skills from singing different harmonies within a whole as well as learning performance and team-working skills valuable in many life situations. Singing in schools is often a part of assemblies but not always developed across the curriculum and throughout the school day. Children can learn so much through songs and rhymes to enhance their learning, such as practising the times tables and number facts. Old fashioned nursery rhymes are now very much forgotten but are valuable in helping children develop phonic and memory skills. Beyond the most obvious benefits the children also learn physical skills that support their health and well-being; develop confidence in their creativity that improves their overall learning skills. Most of all singing is fun and who knows how many of these children will be inspired to go on to be the musicians and singers of the future that we all enjoy. The opportunity for children to come together in the Albert Hall and perform to their parents and friends is a magical experience. In the pressurised world of exam results, league tables and a busy curriculum, Buckinghamshire’s children are still able to enjoy the magic of music.

Do you need a smartwatch? A few years ago, the technology industry thought that smartwatches were going to be the next big thing. While the sales have been increasing, there were only a total of 21.1 million sold last year, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. To put that into perspective, Apple sold 78.3 million iPhones over the Christmas quarter alone. Smartwatches are an accessory to your phone. But as your phone is the main device you use, it deserves accessories that help you get the most out of it.

Here are five reasons a smartwatch may be for you. 1. Notifications Instead of instantly reaching for your phone when you feel a notification, you can simply give your wrist a very quick glance and decide whether it’s important or not. If you’re in the company of other people, you can also wait for the right time to give your wrist a quick glimpse. This makes smartwatches the perfect companion for people who tend to keep their phone in their bag or who are at risk of losing them by always leaving them out on a table.

2. Paying for things Apple Watch, and soon smartwatches for Android devices, lets you pay for things using contactless payment. And it is simply the easiest way to spend money. There is no need to get anything out, which makes it ideal when hands are full (or your wallet is buried in a coat or bag).

3. Distraction free navigation If you like going for walks to unknown destinations, a smartwatch lets you navigate around by (in the case of Apple Watch) subtle taps which tell you which way to go. This also works while driving, though does take some getting used to.

4. Fitness tracking Fitness tracking is one of the main reasons people buy a smartwatch. You can use many smartwatches for swimming, running without your phone and keeping track of your fitness.

5. They can be standalone devices There are smartwatches that can act as standalone devices, meaning you don’t need to have your phone nearby. With my Apple Watch I can go out for a run without my phone, listen to music using Bluetooth headphones, and pay for things with the watch. As it has GPS, it can even map my run. But other smartwatches also have a mobile connection, meaning you can make phone calls or send messages.

So you may not need a smartwatch, but you may want one. If nothing else, they’re very good at telling the time. www.bigideasmachine.com

Santorini The only inhabited caldera in the world, the most southerly of the Cycladic islands, lying between Anafi and Ios, conjures up images of stunning sunsets, blue domed churches, white washed houses, red and black beaches and legends of the lost city of Atlantis. This extraordinary island, which was once inhabited by the Minoans at Akrotiri, is probably the most intriguing of all Greek islands. The towns and villages on the west sit densely on top of the massive cliffs of the caldera, a circular lagoon like body of water, giving spectacular views of the breath-taking sunsets that streak the sky from lilac to purple, yellow to orange, gold and blood red. Highlights of the island include the village of Pyrgos, the beach resorts of Kamari and Perissa, the Red Beach, the still active volcano, accessible by boat, Imerovigli, where celebrities are aplenty and Oia, in the north, where many gather each evening to view sunset. Donkeys are a common sight here and a good way to access Fira, the capital, from the port below.

Paros With its natural beauty, sandy beaches with crystal clear waters and traditional villages, it’s no wonder that Paros is up there as one of the most popular Cycladic islands. The capital, Parikia, is also the main harbour of the island with ferry and hydrofoil connections to other islands. If arriving by sea, one of the first sights you will see is the ports traditional windmill, which has become the trademark of the island. A few minutes walk from the port will bring you to the heart of the town and the castle which dates from the 13th century, and just 10kms east of the capital is the picturesque fishing village of Naoussa which, despite its popularity, has managed to retain its traditional character and charm.

Thessaloniki

Kefalonia

South of mainland Greece and with 650 miles of spectacular coastline and beaches, lies Crete, the largest Greek island and the 5th largest in the Med. Lying equidistant between Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa, this stunning island was home to the Minoan Civilisation over 2000 years before Christ. Made up of 4 ‘counties’, each varying differently, it is impossible to see the whole island in one go, but highlights include: Knossos, the most famous of Minoan palaces; the Samaria Gorge, the longest, narrowest gorge in Europe; Agios Nikolaos – the ‘St. Tropez’ of Greece; the Venetian and Byzantine influences in Hania and Rethymnon; The Lassithi Plateau, birthplace of Zeus, king of the gods, in the Dikte Cave; Matala, where, in the 60s hippies made their homes in the caves; Ierapetra, the most southerly town in Europe; Vai, in the far east, with its palm tree lined beach and Spinalonga, the former leper colony which lies in the bay opposite Elounda, the former fishing village to the east of the island and the most beautiful of all.

Greece’s second city, in the north of the country, is vibrant and walkable with a less hectic pace than the capital and is filled with monuments and museums, historical sites and Byzantine walls, where old meets new in chaotic abundance. Its most famous sight is the White Tower, a monument and museum on the waterfront, which was once a notorious prison during the Ottoman rule. Much of the city was destroyed in the great fire of 1917, but the Rotonda and Arch of Galerius remain. Aristotelous Square is the focal point of the city and its 12 buildings have been listed by the Hellenic Republic. Nearby Halkidiki provides glorious beaches with azure seas on its 3 peninsulas, along with excellent tourist facilities, and, on the 3rd, Mount Athos, an Orthodox spiritual centre since 1054 which has enjoyed autonomous statute since Byzantine times. Women and children are forbidden on the Holy Mountain which houses around 20 monasteries inhabited by approximately 1400 monks. Thessaloniki has two universities, two symphony orchestras, a flourishing arts community and a renowned nightlife making it an ideal year round city break destination.

Like a jewel, Kefalonia sparkles in the sunlight and its rich lands hide a majestic treasure trove of attractions for the visitor, from sandy beaches to coral coves, hillsides of olives, cypress pines and citrus trees to the lofty heights of Mount Aenos. Made more famous by the novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, this gorgeous Ionian island has it all. Day trips from the capital, Argostoli, can be made to Fiskardo in the north, Myrtos beach, Lixouri, Assos and even a day trip to neighbouring Ithaka. You may even be lucky enough to spot caretta caretta sea turtles or monk seals on your travels. A fabulous day out is to the Melissani Cave, discovered in 1951 and housing a vast underground lake, an unique geological phenomenon caused by the dissolution of the calcareous rocks, where boat trips are available. Myth mentions that Melissani committed suicide here and fell into the lake because Pan did not return her love.

Quite possibly the perfect summer day out – watching a game of polo! Yasemen Kaner-White

68 the riverside journals

Polo is one of the oldest games in the world, dating back to around 600 BC in North Persia. From there it was taken to China and Japan but was popularised in North India during the 19th century. The UK polo season kicks off in May and ends in September, with indoor (arena) polo being played throughout the winter. The best polo players rotate around the globe following the seasons to partake in the most prestigious games. They start in Argentina, followed by America and then go to the UK. Here are six games not to miss this summer…

The Gloucestershire Festival of Polo – Beaufort Polo Club, Cotswolds 10th and 11th June The club which kick-started polo in the Cotswolds and home to the famous Tomlinson polo dynasty showcases polo games of all levels, from low to medium to high goal. The successful Gloucestershire Festival of Polo event pairs top-class polo with fantastic entertainment and – much to the delight of the shopaholics out there – a huge tented shopping village. https://beaufortpoloclub.com/the-festival-2017/

The Queen’s Cup Guards 23rd May to 18th June The most important trophy played for at Guards Polo Club in any year is ironically, probably the smallest. Not surprisingly, the skill of the players and ponies is equally matched by the pomp and pageantry of finals day itself. HM The Queen historically attends the final to present her trophy to the winning patron and watches the match from Guards Polo Club’s Royal Box; it really is a special day and worth an outing to partake. http://www.guardspoloclub.com

Chestertons Polo In the Park 9th, 10th and 11th June World-class polo in the heart of London, returning international polo to its ‘spiritual home’, where the rules of the game were originally formalised in 1875. The first match happens Friday evening, so you can come and cheer on England straight from work. http://www.polointheparklondon.com

The Warwickshire Cup Cirencester 21st to 25th June Cirencester is the most historic club in the UK, and now has 10 match grounds. The Warwickshire Cup culminates with a premier high goal final day and is the club’s flagship event. A fun family day out with much more besides polo to entertain everyone is guaranteed. http://www.cirencesterpolo.co.uk/About

British Beach Polo Championships Sandbanks 7th and 8th July Top: Chestertons Polo in the Park Middle: Sandbanks Beach Polo Below: Gold Cup King Power team and Cup Bottom: Gloucestershire Festival of Polo

Last year saw even more viewing areas for all visitors during the day, whilst hospitality and VIP guests relished their private terraces looking out over the polo arena against the beautiful coastline forming an unforgettable backdrop. After a day of spotting the oversized orange polo ball to be easily spotted in the sand hit to and fro between fast paced horses, Trevor Nelson brought the house down with the famed beach after-party. This year is their 10th anniversary and they are planning to celebrate in style! http://www.sandpolo.com/info.php

The Gold Cup Cowdray 27th June (with semi-finals on 19th July and the Final on 23rd July) Played to determine the British Open Polo Championship, it is the premier polo tournament in the world, at 22 goal (High Goal) level. International stars of the game play, whilst the crowd is made up of polo enthusiasts from all over the globe. Pack a picnic and dress up to fully embrace this special day’s offerings, with the heavenly backdrop of Cowdray Park’s illustrious lawns. http://cowdraypolo.co.uk

s the changing season ushers in the warmth of summer, The Garden Players are well into rehearsals on another Shakespeare play for our many friends and the loyal supporters of our charities. This year’s exciting new production will be Shakespeare’s masterpiece, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and we are supporting Child Bereavement UK, a national charity based near High Wycombe which supports parents and children when there is a bereavement in their family. We are delighted and excited to be back at Stubbings where, by kind permission of the current owner Dudley Good, the superb gardens and lawns of Stubbings House, Maidenhead, a truly stunning venue, will be our outdoor theatre during midsummer week from June 20th to 24th for our performances. The lawns will be open for picnics from 5.30pm prior to each performance. While the performances will be open air, our audiences will once again be in the covered stand with raised seating which was so successful in improving comfort and visibility for Henry IV Part 1 in 2015. If you go down to the woods tonight, what big surprises will await you? Mischievous fairies and star-crossed lovers, comic labourers, an ass-headed monster and a hungry lion all play their part in ensuring that the course of true love never does run smooth. This magical tale of enchantment ranks amongst Shakespeare’s finest. “Shakespeare’s greatest comedy and greatest play, full of superb characters!” This year’s production will be produced by John Timewell who will be directing his fourth new production for the company. John has gathered around him a particularly strong cast of well-known local actors from around the Thames Valley, many of whom are stalwarts of The Garden Players, as well as some exciting newcomers. Since the inaugural 2009 production of Much Ado About Nothing, The Garden Players have raised in excess of £78,000 for various charities. Our aims are to stage high quality productions while maximising charitable donations and raising public awareness of the charities being supported. The Garden Players are fortunate to be supported once again, by Deloitte and Stuart & Trish Fletcher as the main sponsors, and our thanks go to them for their continued and invaluable contributions.

Stubbings House Grade II listed Stubbings House was built in 1750 by Eric Ambler (Attorney General) and later added to in the Victorian era. As the previous occupier to the current owners, Sir Thomas Merton, physicist and art collector, converted the Stable block into the largest private laboratory in the UK. The current owners, Mr and Mrs Dudley Good, have been in occupation since September 1977.

Gardens The gardens are dominated by the lawn and the surrounding trees. The two giant Cedars (Cedrus Libani) are estimated to be in excess of 200 years old and thought to be amongst the largest cedars in the country. The Monkey Puzzle Tree (Araucaria) is also a noted specimen. Beyond the lawn across the HA-HA the arable land of the estate stretches to the trees beyond. Flanking the gardens to the south are some 250 acres of woodland, known as Maidenhead Thicket, managed by The National Trust. The gardens were first opened to the public under the National Garden Scheme when it was inaugurated in 1927. Apart from this year’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the gardens have formed the background of the annual Stubbings Opera event for the last 17 years. This year’s productions will be The Marriage of Figaro and La Bohème on the 21st & 22nd July.

hy limit yourself to a hotel room when there is a host of alternative accommodation right on your doorstep, often with mind-blowingly good views. Swing from treetops in the Lost Meadow Treepod tree house; a cute cedar-clad wooden ball nestled between branches in the whimsical woodland of north Cornwall. Both spherical and sustainable, it is an idyllic spot to explore. The seaside of Looe is only half an hour’s drive away. Or if that isn’t far out enough, how about bedtime in a bus? More common than you might think, there are a range of buses out there, refurbished and waiting for you to visit. The Big Green Bus in East Sussex sleeps six and pets are welcome too, fitted out with up-cycled furniture, oak flooring, painted walls, and a beautifully custom-made kitchen and shower room. The log-burner makes it a warm welcome all year round. We all know Devon is divine, the cream teas alone are worth the journey, but have you explored a stay in a shepherd’s hut? If not, why not? Handcrafted Jacob’s Hut perched near a pond, with a summerhouse nearby, is where you go for your home-cooked hearty brekkie or a healthy continental if you prefer. Birdwatchers, hikers and bikers are all at home in the surroundings with days culminating with dinner around a campfire. For the Bear Grylls among us, perhaps even those offerings are too pretentious and a Persian-inspired tent in the Monmouthshire countryside is more fitting, so pick the Oakes at Penhein. Though don’t be fooled, although a tent, with a clear inside colour scheme, king sized bed and a private flushing loo in a separate adjoining pod, it is more sleeping beauty than survival. Neighbouring flower meadows are perfect for picnicking. I’ve always thought the idea of being a free spirited gyspy seems alluring, the beautiful quaint rosy red, Rose Gypsy Wagon in Yorkshire allows you to feel the free outdoors the authentic gypsy way but with a touch of luxury. Rose is a 100-year-old renovated traditional bow top wagon with a feature stained glass window, kitted out with a cool coal burning stove to keep you toasty and magical fairy lights to add to your ‘glamping’ glamour. Finding left-field lodgings couldn’t be easier, and not only are they often more environmental, they are more economical in comparison to swish hotels, you won’t regret it…

Woburn A stone’s throw from London

rive out of London on a Saturday morning, joining the M1 at junction 1 and within one hour and 20 minutes you could be starting your weekend at The Woburn Estate in Bedfordshire. This was a temptation we found hard to resist. However, instead of taking the motorway we decided to take a more leisurely drive through the country roads and villages of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. Whichever route you choose, there is no doubt you will be charmed and chilled by the stunning, picturesque Georgian village of Woburn. When visiting Woburn, experience a taste of history with a contemporary and modern feel by staying at The Woburn Hotel which stands proudly at the gateway to The Woburn Estate. When we arrived we turned into the entrance of the hotel through the old courtyard which immediately relaxes you and draws you into the Woburn weekend experience. We were greeted by friendly staff who showed us to our room, one of the superb individually designed cottages, facing the courtyard and main building. The room was spacious and cleverly designed, consisting of a cosy sitting area leading down a few stairs into the bedroom and bathroom area. The décor was traditional with a contemporary twist, reflecting the culture of The Woburn Estate. After settling into our room we wandered into the hotel to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea in the Drawing Room. A selection of sandwiches, scones and delightful cakes and pastries were accompanied by a choice of teas all served with friendly impeccable service. Aside from Woburn Abbey, tourists can visit Woburn’s Georgian centre which is not only a residential village but also a tourist attraction with a variety of shops to browse. It is very easy to while away an afternoon in antique shops, or choosing gifts and treats in unique and interesting family owned shops and curiosity outlets. It is also worth visiting The Woburn Heritage Centre in Old St Mary’s Church on Bedford Street, it contains a museum of the local history of Woburn and offers a tourist information point where hard copies of walks around the village can be picked up and enjoyed. The walks are clearly marked with white arrows with the Woburn walk logo. Some pass through the deer park with views of the Abbey.

The Abbey itself has been open to the public since 1955 and is still the home of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, the Abbey has been part of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford’s family heritage since the early 17th century. There are 22 rooms to roam packed full of 18th century English and French furniture, magnificent silver and gold collections, a range of porcelain and many privately collected items treasured by generations of the Russell family. The Abbey also houses one of the most significant private art collections in the world. The Abbey’s captivating rooms and fascinating antiques show a personal side to a public family that has been instrumental in many significant periods of English history. Following a visit to the village and Abbey our room offered the perfect ambience for a rest in the cozy lounge area and very comfortable facilities to prepare for dinner at the hotel’s multi awardwinning – including 2 AA Rosettes, restaurant - Olivier’s. The restaurant is very welcoming with warm and friendly service that helps you to relax and feel both at ease and pampered. The menu was delicious and it was a real challenge to choose from the interesting range of English and Continental dining which is beautifully presented. The next challenge is knowing when to stop! A nightcap in the Tavistock Bar rounds off the perfect country day. The next morning offered a traditional English breakfast and all the Continental trimmings you could wish for and a blue sky. We made the best of the weather to enjoy a walk through the 3,000 acre Deer Park and Woburn Abbey Gardens. We explored much of the 28 acres of the Humphry Repton inspired gardens. The highlights for us were the tulips and hyacinths, Prunus and Pear Blossoms, Narcissi and various Clematis. The dedicated gardens team offer visitors everything from flower beds bursting with colour around neat, green lawns through to ponds and woodland areas that help to preserve local biodiversity. Highlights throughout the year include the bog garden, designed in the 21st century to make use of a boggy patch and historic features, such as the romantic Doric Temple and Wyattville Seat. We were also treated to a tour of The Sculpture Gallery, originally built as an orangery and then increasingly used to display the 5th Duke’s personal collection of sculptures in the 18th century. The Sculpture Gallery would make a perfect setting for conferences, special events and, of course, weddings. Throughout 2017 there will be a number of unique events taking place at the Sculpture Gallery including: Natalie Williams’ Soul Family Motown Review: 13-14 October, an exclusive evening of musical entertainment and fine dining. War Notes from Woburn: Remembrance Sunday: 12-13 November, Lili la Scala will perform a poignant blend of vintage songs while guests enjoy a traditional two-course Sunday lunch. A Touch of West End: 10 December, back by popular demand - musical entertainment and fine dining. For further information on these and all events visit www.thewoburnhotel.co.uk/events/ All in all, a stay at The Woburn Hotel has so much to offer, we particularly enjoyed the sophisticated mix of traditional and cool contemporary surroundings, food and friendly staff. But, most of all we enjoyed the quintessential weekend in the country.

Good Food, Good Wine, Good Friends, Good Times…

T

he Vineyard is a luxurious Relais and Châteaux retreat nestling in the Berkshire countryside, famous for an award-winning wine list with a cellar containing some 30,000 bottles. Add into this mix chef, Robby Jenks, creator of world-class cuisine, and The Vineyard’s reputation, as a place where one really can eat, drink and sleep wine, is definitely well deserved. There are few greater pleasures in life than enjoying food and wine in the company of friends so when I read about their Ladies Lunches I booked in my friend and I quicker than you can say, ‘Chin Chin’! On arrival, we were welcomed with a glass of deliciously, champagne and canapés, before being shown through into a private dining room. The three-course lunch menu with paired wines was a perfectly choreographed taste sensation. We started with goats cheese salad and sorrel sorbet served with a divine white Bordeaux, followed by the tenderest pork loin, accompanied by a robust Portuguese red. The dessert was a heavenly combination of strawberries with nougat glace and a delectable Californian Black Muscat. Coffee and petit fours rounded off a delicious lunch. The food and wine on their own were amazing, but we also had the pleasure of our lovely lunch speaker, Amelia Singer, offering an insight into wine from a female perspective. Her irreverent but informative style meant we were all sorry when she had to leave at the end of lunch, to film the new series of ITV’s ‘The Wine Show’. Amelia is part of a new generation of women in the food and drink industry determined to demystify and remove the snobbery from wine-buying and drinking. It’s big business and becoming very female centered – we spend around £10billion a year on wine in the UK, with 74% of us choosing wine over other alcoholic drinks and 55% of women drinking wine as a preference, compared to just 22% of men. It would certainly appear that in the UK we are adopting a more European attitude to food and wine, regarding it as an opportunity to get together with friends and family in a convivial atmosphere. The Vineyard are experts at this – lunch was a wonderfully social affair, full of laughter and a shared love of food, wine and good company. Feeling replete and content, we changed into bathrobes and spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in the luxurious 5-star spa before, perhaps rather surprisingly, finding we had space for a light evening repast from the Californian Bar menu. Taking advice from the lovely lady sommelier, we enjoyed wine flights from Portugal and Austria with our supper, before heading up to our beautiful deluxe bedroom suite with its fluffy pillows and crisp linen, ensuring we slept like princesses until morning. The only meal here without wine is known as breakfast! But that was only because we unfortunately had to drive home after it! Thank you to The Vineyard for a memorable and very enjoyable Ladies Lunch and overnight stay. Here’s to the next time! Chin Chin!

hen the children were young and we enjoyed sun-soaked summers, I would often drag our sofa from the living room into the garden. In doing so, I was attempting to recreate the comfort of our living room outdoors. Fast forward to summer 2017 and I am surprised to discover that it is something of a trend. The difference now is that the sofa or ottoman is created for outdoor use. This summer, it is all about bringing the outdoors into the home and the indoors out. Outdoor furniture is enhanced by throws and pillows. Vibrant, jewel-like, colours complement neutral tones. This summer, as you sit relaxing by a glowing fire pit, your bare feet may rest on textured patterned rugs, wine glasses may grace colourful mosaic tables while drinks cool in a fridge nearby. Yes, even a kitchen, of sorts, is now outdoors. Lighting is all important. This season garden furnishing facilitates opulent lounging. Natural materials are in, reflecting our growing interest in sustainability and the environment. Wicker is witnessing a resurgence both indoors and outdoors. Indeed, it feels as though we are spiralling back to the 70s, albeit a more luxurious 70s, with a renewed interest in such materials. There is a move away from hard industrial metals and plastics to more natural textured materials such as cork, wood, clay and brick. Sunbaked terracotta is popular once more. Rose tinted copper is on the wane. Cool marble maintains its dominance particularly when coupled with the warmth of brass. A little bit of yin and yang. Bronze is the new kid on the block. Soft pastels are set to enhance the ubiquitous pale grey tones that feature in many of our homes. Although shades of grey still hold an appeal, earthy warmer tones such as sand, ochre and olive, vie for our attention. Various shades of blue evoke a feeling of summer but green is a strong contender. Contemporary patterned wallpaper continues to trend. Anything with a botanical, tropical print is popular as are geometrics. Indeed, geometric patterns are enjoying something of a moment in all interior aspects. Furnishing trends can sometimes leave you in a daze. Most of what trends exists for a fleeting fickle moment and then, like a puff of smoke, disappears. Ditch your pineapple accessories, they are no more. Long live the butterfly or parrot or whatever. The trick seems to be not to follow trends religiously but to either be a trendsetter and celebrate your individuality or to embrace aspects of trends that appeal to you. As you dress your clothing with an accessory, so too you dress your home. Cushions and throws in a fashionable, textured fabric and colour, instantly update. Summer trends are fun and often inexpensive to follow. I am toying with the idea of a couple of terracotta pots, a wicker chair, and a statement indoor plant. I’m considering perhaps an aloe vera or a cactus or even an olive tree. Though not a fiddle leaf fig as I understand that it is so last season.

From School to Scorsese: Asa Butterfield shares his Advice for Aspiring Actors

M

odest, ambitious, and down-to-earth, at 20 Asa Butterfield already has an astonishing filmography behind him, including lead roles in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo (2011), Morgan Matthews’ X+Y (2014) and Tim Burton’s magical Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016). Following his starring role in Peter Chelsom’s interplanetary adventure The Space Between Us, Asa will play Raleigh in the film adaptation of R C Sherriff’s seminal WWI play Journey’s End. He’s worked with Harrison Ford, Emma Thompson and Samuel L Jackson among many others and is passionate about helping aspiring actors. He will be taking time out of his filming schedule to host a three-day Masterclass with The Reel Scene (June 23-25).

Modern European in style, British ingredients, French at heart...

In his exclusive interview with The Reel Scene, he gave these tips: How do you prepare for an audition? “I usually start by breaking the scene down into digestible chunks so I can track where the changes are, where the important moments in the scene are and then piece it all together at the end. “ Do you review your work and question choices you’ve made? “As an actor, you’re naturally very critical of your own work. Every actor I’ve met is that way and doesn’t really enjoy watching themselves. It’s not easy to review your work and it’s definitely not a skill I’ve particularly mastered yet. You tend to judge yourself harshly. Surround yourself with the right people and there will always be someone to help you critique your work.”

ne of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Milton Avery (1885-1965) is celebrated for his luminous paintings of landscapes, figures and still lifes, which balance distillation of form with free, vigorous brushwork and lyrical colour. The gallery’s first exhibition by Avery since announcing its representation of the Milton Avery Estate, and also the first exhibition of the artist’s work in London for 10 years, features paintings and works on paper from throughout his career, ranging in date from the 1930s to the 1960s. Included are pairings of Avery’s oils and associated works on paper, in addition to works created as a result of his sole trip to Europe in 1952, when he visited London, Paris and the South of France. Many of the works on display have never been exhibited outside of the US. An accompanying publication will include an essay by Edith Devaney, Contemporary Curator at the Royal Academy of Arts and co-curator of the recent Abstract Expressionism exhibition (currently on display at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao), examining the development of Avery’s career and his influence within the canon of American art. “Avery spanned, and to an extent became the link between, two significant twentieth century national movements: American Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism. His highly sophisticated understanding of colour was passed on, in particular, to Rothko and Newman.” – Edith Devaney

an and Marisa Cornford, The Cornford Duo, both professional musicians living in Buckinghamshire, share a passion for live music. Marisa, a pianist and composer who teaches at the Royal Academy of Music and until recently was Head of Music at St Piran’s School in Maidenhead, feels strongly about the decline of classical music in schools. Her husband, Dan, plays viola with the London Philharmonic orchestra among other top UK orchestras, and also worries about the diminishing status of classical music. Dan and Marisa have concentrated on a more innovative approach to their performances. “We emphasise the use of multi-media in our events”, remarks Marisa, “that way we can give new dimensions to works and it is very stimulating for us as well as the audience!” The Duo recently gave an Easter themed concert which featured the first performance of a new work by Marisa based on the Stations of the Cross inspired by the 14 paintings on that subject by the late British artist Norman Adams. “We are looking to explore these ideas further in a silent film project in May”, explains Dan. “Marisa has composed an original score for Alfred Hitchcock’s final silent movie, The Lodger, which we will perform live alongside the screening. There will also be an appearance of Hitchcock himself (played by actor Anthony Lewis) which follows the tradition he established of popping up for a short cameo in his movies!” The festival will be launched during the Wycombe Arts Festival and there will be a further screening at Norden Farm on August 23rd with additional showings later in the year. They will be running a Come and Perform day on May 27th which will culminate in a performance of Dido and Aenaes by Purcell showcasing talented young local singers and musicians alongside professional players. On May 30th, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bourne End library, their performance will include an original musical adaptation of Patrick, the popular children’s book by Quentin Blake. www.cornfordmusic.co.uk

orks by Paul Day, Simon Gudgeon and Stephen Newby will be among this year’s packed visual arts programme at Henley Festival 2017 (5-9 July). Against the unique backdrop of Henley Festival’s stunning riverside setting, works by some of the UK’s most exciting contemporary artists will include large-scale sculptures, immersive outdoor light installations and a string of pop-up galleries. The festival’s sculpture garden will include pieces by renowned British sculptor Paul Day, who created the official Iraq and Afghanistan memorial unveiled by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in March this year. Known for his high relief works and widely recognised as a leader in his field, Day’s best known works include the Battle of Britain London Monument on the Victoria Embankment, and the Meeting Place in St Pancras International Station. The lawns of the festival site will showcase a series of installations, sculptures and interactive artworks from leading artists including Ivan Black, who’ll be showcasing his stunning kinetic work alongside Richard Jackson and Sally Fawkes’ expressive glass sculptures, as well as Simon Gudgeon’s minimalist, semi-abstract forms in his signature smooth style, and Dawn Conn’s whimsical sculptures inspired by fairy tales, romance and simple pleasures. Stephen Newby’s Beating Heart will dominate the festival’s Riverside Lawn, a beautiful installation that demonstrates the artist’s mission to challenge preconceived notions about the nature of materials and their possible forms. As the Festival moves from day to night, David Ogle’s illuminated forest of light, with its canopy of interlocking, glowing branches, will bathe the lawns in pools of neon light, while Jig Cochrane’s Jigantic epic light garden will bloom with magical giant illuminated glowers. Festival-goers can also create their own multi-coloured light show simply by talking to trees, as part of Ithaca’s interactive installation, Whispering Trees. Contemporary art mogul Eddie Lock has teamed up with regular collaborator Liam West of urban art gallery Beautiful Crime to once again showcase an array of striking urban photography, painting and mixed media artworks that will adorn the walls of the Art Bar. Newcomers to the Eddie Lock & Beautiful Crime Galleries this year include New York make-up artist Sonja Yaso, and Dutch artist Hayo Sol, whose fans range from actress Denise Richards to Prince Albert of Monaco, alongside works by Fin-Dac, Goldie, Pam Glew, Dan Balwin, Illuminati, K-Guy, Russell Marshall and many others who are turning heads in today’s art world. Elsewhere in the festival grounds, quirky work from The Connor Brothers will be on display in the new Jazz Garden Gallery, whilst visitors will be invited to sit for their very own stitched portrait by Harriet Riddell. Riddell has travelled the world with her sewing machine, stitching deeply personal portraits and landscapes including in the slums of Nairobi and the tea fields of the Himalayas. Henley Festival’s spectacular Visual Arts programme sets it apart from other festivals, with organisers working with top galleries worldwide and presenting the perfect opportunity for festival-goers seeking to invest in great art.

Antiques S and so much more By David Bailey

ome people may tell you that Portobello Road is all buskers, food stalls and Japanese tourists looking for the Blue Door. But behind all the razzamatazz, the real business of the road goes on: antiques. Portobello is the largest regular antique market in the UK, with around 500 dealers every Saturday. Trading between dealers starts early in the morning. Some are bringing items in from all over the UK, knowing that in Portobello, they’ll find the right buyer. Others are seeking fresh stock for their antique shops in the home counties and beyond. Portobello’s own traders are active buyers, too. Most have a regular customer base – sometimes built up over decades – and whether they’re collectors, traders or interior decorators, they always want to see what’s new. In this way, Portobello still acts as a giant clearing house for every kind of antique and collectable. You just have to look a little bit harder to find them. So get off the street and dive into the shops and arcades. Don’t rush; take time to explore and you’ll discover an amazing variety of antiques and collectables, from Greek and Roman antiquities through to 1930s art deco and stopping at every epoch in between. One trip to Portobello could trigger a lifetime’s interest in textiles or silver, porcelain or watches, chinoiserie or cut glass. Many Portobello traders are among the leading experts in their respective fields. And when you buy from a member of the Portobello Antiques Dealers Association, you can be sure that the items you buy are accurately described and the transaction properly documented. Over the years, some arcades have been lost to fashion. But the Council has responded by opening up a new run of stalls along Westbourne Grove, with a full complement of traders in silver plate, jewellery, frames, furs and general collectables. Meanwhile, along the stalls in Portobello Road itself, you’ll find toys, stamps, cameras, books, records...sold by knowledgeable, enthusiastic traders. Many Saturday street traders ‘stall out’ on Fridays, too, when the crowds are thinner and the atmosphere is more relaxed – there could be up to 40 in the summer months. Unless you have an RBKC Permit, parking will be a problem. Fortunately, Notting Hill Gate station is served by three tube lines, Ladbroke Road by two and 14 bus routes stop on or near to Portobello Road. Living in London, we can enjoy one of the world’s great antiques markets, right on our own doorstep. So come and make your own discoveries, any Saturday. www.antiquesportabelloroad.com

Fans of hit Channel 4 show Posh Pawn have currently been watching Series 6. Are you surprised at the success of the show? The format and the insight into the lives of our clients makes great viewing. I never imagined it would be as successful as it’s become, but to be honest even though it’s part and parcel of what we do on a daily basis I’m glued to the box when it’s on as I’m often not privy to the outcome. What would you say has been the most exciting item someone has brought in and, of course, the strangest? For me it was the collection of rare classic vehicles which had been stored in an underground car park in Madrid for the past 40 years. The millionaire Spanish owner had deceased and his estate was to be disposed of. Low mileage unrestored examples included a 1959 Mercedes SL 190 with only 13000 miles on the clock, a super rare Porsche 356C from the 60s with, again, low mileage. All in all, there were 32 vehicles including a Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes, Jaguar and an Aston Martin. It was all such an amazing find, a real Aladdin’s cave of near perfect rare examples and a once-in-alifetime discovery. “I guess the strangest would have to be what was apparently super rare whale faeces!! You hail from Surrey and your background is in property developing, why pawnbroking? It must be in my blood. My mother had told me stories about my grandfather pawning his suit on Monday and then getting it back on a Friday to wear down the local pub. I’m from the East End and pawnbroking was a way of life back in the day. I love the wheeling and dealing side of it and I’m well suited to that style of business. Prestige Pawnbrokers can now be found in Weybridge, Richmond, Hatton Garden and Manchester. Where next? We will be looking at further stores throughout the UK in the coming months and putting that into action. We have also been contacted by businessmen in other parts of the world who are keen to become involved in the brand and that too may be of interest. As an entrepreneur, it’s important to keep evolving. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? The beauty of being a serial entrepreneur is that you don’t know what the future holds or quite where it may take you. All I do know is that for now the pawnbroking sector is very exciting and a great business to be involved in. Every day is different and that’s what drives me to get up in the mornings. If there comes a time when it becomes drab or mundane I will move on. James, can we expect to see Series 7 of Posh Pawn anytime soon?

James Constantinou Entrepreneur and star of Channel 4’s Posh Pawn, James Constantinou operates his successful Prestige Pawnbrokers in Surrey, Richmond, Hatton Garden and Manchester overseeing one of the UK’s most varied and enthralling businesses whilst reinventing the way the world views pawn….

Posh Pawn is currently airing from Friday, 21st April at 8pm on Channel 4.

Furnish your outdoor space to create a haven you won’t want to leave…

s the weather warms up we are naturally gravitating towards the great outdoors. Whether you have a garden, patio or communal grounds, it’s easy to make a beautiful outdoorsy base in which to relax, read, or relish the sunrays. For a fashionable on-trend approach, search the shops for Scandi influenced items. From folding teak chairs, floor-standing paper lantern lamps, to black and white striped linen cushions and tables topped with potted on-trend cacti, the region offers endless inspiration. When I think of the garden I think of eating outdoors, whether it be a sarnie to be savoured with the backdrop of birdsong, or indeed a bustling BBQ with chums. The Flame Fire Bowl by online shop ‘Scandi Living’ serves the purpose whilst being a stylish addition to the garden vista, as does their savvy Ship’s Lamp, designed to keep the wind out within it’s minimalist cylinder frame. When the sun is shining not much beats a dozy nap stretched out on a cushy day-bed, the Casbah Daybed from Maize Living, which specialises in ever-popular, easy to maintain rattan, coming with two footstools and a glass topped coffee table, so inviting you’d probably stay out way past sundown. Of course hammocks should not be overlooked, not only do they have a childlike appeal but they are super duper comfy too, and add fun to your garden setting. As living space is often never enough, there is a shift to using the outside area as an ‘extension’ to the home and therefore shelter is a must. Tents offer just the answer, creating a cozy space with snuggly Nordic fake fur rugs, candescent candles and colourful cushions, all lit up by magical fairy lights in a range of hues and intensities. When it comes to the actual garden, again modern minimal is the way to go, less concrete, more gravel and slate slabs interspersed with wild flowers such as lavender to attract and boost the dwindling bee population. Plant more native, drought-tolerant plants like lilacs, to strengthen the ecosystem. Give your selected plants a proud place to sit and choose vibrant pots in keeping with the bright in vogue colour blocking trend, or create a chic clean and natural look with terracotta or glass, or be seriously sustainable and use unwanted large paper bags. Lastly, the Danish concept of ‘hygge’ – essentially conceiving a sublime space oozing warmth and feel-good factor is an important element of garden glamour in 2017. Think comfort with reclining chairs and creature comforts such as soft blankets and cushions.

n England Permitted Development Rights (often referred to as “PD” Rights) where they are still in force, or not already all used up, allow UK homeowners to improve and extend their homes without the need to seek a specific planning permission. However, don’t get too excited, as many more modern properties have had their PD Rights withdrawn retrospectively either by their local council or by the developer who built their home in a deal done by them with your local planning department in order for them to be able to build more houses on the same site. Also previous owners have sometimes already extended a property to the maximum allowed under Permitted Development. For example semi-detached and terraced houses can put a conservatory on the rear of their homes with a projection from the rear wall of up to 3m if the PD rights are intact. If not, then a planning application will be required before one can be legally built. Before even replacing windows, doors, adding a porch, conservatory or an extension, it is wise to check that you can do so on your particular property even if you own it outright. For example if your property is a flat in a residential block of flats or in a Conservation Area or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or is a Listed Building, you are not legally permitted to replace any windows or doors or add any structure without first obtaining planning permission. This may come as a bit of a shock to flat owners, as even if their management company organise the replacement windows, they are not allowed to do so without getting planning approval from the local council first. However UK homeowners (excluding flat owners unfortunately) can perform certain types of work without needing to apply for planning permission. These are called “Permitted Development Rights”. They derive from a general planning permission granted not by the local authority but by the British Parliament. Sadly as just mentioned, the Permitted Development Rights which apply to many common projects for houses do not apply to flats, maisonettes or other buildings. Similarly, commercial properties have different Permitted Development Rights to dwellings. In some areas of the country, known generally as “designated areas”, Permitted Development Rights are more restricted, such as in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or a World Heritage Site or in a Conservation Area. If this is the case for your property you will need to apply for planning permission for certain types of work which do not need an application in other areas. There are also different additional requirements if the property is a Listed Building. The UK Government’s Planning Portal’s general advice is that you should contact your local planning authority and discuss your proposal before any work begins. This may or may not be a free service. Your local authority will be able to inform you of any reason why the development may not be permitted and if you need to apply for planning permission for all or part of the work. Sometimes local authorities require written submissions before being prepared even to look at a potential project, and many now charge a fee to ask them such questions. It is also worth noting that your local planning authority may have removed some of your permitted development rights by issuing an ‘Article 4’ direction. This will mean that you have to submit a planning application for work which normally does not need one (as is the case in some areas of Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire for example). Article 4 directions are made when the character of an area of acknowledged importance would be threatened by over development. They are most common in conservation areas. You will probably know if your property is affected by such a direction, but do check with your local planning authority if you are not sure. There are an awful lot of rules surrounding permitted development, planning and building regulations if you are looking to make additions or changes to your property, so it is sensible to partner with firms experienced in dealing with these matters so that you can be as sure as you can the advice you are given is accurate. For example glass extensions such as conservatories or orangeries (including previous extensions) and other buildings must not exceed 50% of the curtilage of your whole property. This limit includes outbuildings. Also as a general rule homeowners are not permitted to build an extension onto the front of their house if it faces a road without planning permission, as usually local authorities expect extensions to be put on the rear of a property. Homeowners in England are permitted to add a porch (if not in a Conservation Area etc.) up to a maximum of 3 square metres (external measurements) under Permitted Development, so it really is very important before buying a house or before making changes to a house to establish what PD Rights are still intact (if any). The bottom line is that if there are insufficient Permitted Development Rights to undertake the project you have in mind, you will need planning permission, and unless it would be deemed a temporary structure (like a conservatory), you will also probably need to submit a Building Regulations Application. The most a homeowner can extend beyond the original back wall of their house without planning under Permitted Development is 3 metres if it is a terraced or semi-detached property, or 4 metres if their property is detached. It is not possible therefore to have a conservatory on the back of an extension that projects beyond these limits without planning permission.

The transformation of London’s South bank – why now is the time to buy at one of London’s oldest cultural hubs

T

he South Bank’s prominence within the capital city has ebbed and flowed throughout history, with humble beginnings as a strategic port and naval base for the Roman army, when the city was first carved out as the country’s capital. From being no more than desolate marshland only frequented by commuters from the south embarking a ferry boat to the City of London, or those being transported to the grim confounds of The Clink, England’s oldest prison built in 1151, it is fair to say that London’s South Bank has evolved and transformed enormously. It wasn’t until the mid-18th Century and the Industrial Revolution that the South Bank regenerated into a core commercial centre for the city once again, with a plethora of factories, mills, tanneries and workhouses changing the face of the river front. Further deprivation came to the South Bank following relentless bombing raids during the Second World War that razed a number of the riverside works. However, the area is again on an upward trajectory seeing significant regeneration and transformation in recent years, with the 5.25 acre Southbank Place development, surrounding the iconic Shell building, taking centre stage. The result is the creation of a new cultural destination in the heart of London, which is drawing in property purchasers who appreciate its fantastic riverside location, high specification homes and excellent connections across London. Southbank Place, among others, is helping transform the South Bank into a prime residential area. According to Knight Frank, average prices in the area rose by 28% between 2013-2015, an 18% growth when compared with the rest of Prime London. Richard Oakes, Sales & Marketing Director, Europe, Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company said: “What we are offering at Southbank Place is an opportunity to experience the best of what London has to offer. We expect demand for the stylish new apartments to remain high as purchasers are not only receiving an excellent lifestyle that brings together innovation, sensitive design and exceptional craftsmanship, they are also investing in a location which we expect will see continued strong long term capital growth.” When complete, Southbank Place will feature seven new buildings which complement their iconic surroundings and maximise natural light, designed by leading architects, Kohn Pederson Fox, Squire & Partners, Patel Taylor, Stanton Williams, GRID and Townshend Landscape. With Southbank Place situated on the former site of The Festival of Britain of 1951, Belvedere Gardens (the latest phase to be released) has been designed to celebrate the area’s heritage and culture. The visually striking exterior pays homage to the Festival’s emblem, the ‘Festival Star’, embossed across the façade, with the bronze colour also echoing the nearby Palace of Westminster. This small and detailed texture can also be seen in the perforated aluminium panels on the sides of the building, which interacts with sunlight making the building appear to evolve and take new shape throughout the day. Prices at Belvedere Gardens, start from £1,050,000 www.southbank-place.com or call 0207 001 3600

Smart-Home Technology

What is a smart-home?

Why would I want one? The thing about smart-home technology is – it’s almost like explaining the benefits of electricity, or the internet – it’s difficult to pick where to even begin. So – let’s start with the beginning of a day: Your favourite play-list fades in on your in-the-wall, hidden speakers, as your lights automatically fade up (if it’s dark) or your blinds automatically open (if it’s light). Your intelligent heating system has assessed your wake-up schedule and has made sure your home is at your perfect level of comfort relative to the outside. Your kitchen TV switches to the news, or the newest episodes of your children’s prized TV shows. And when you leave for work, or holiday, or the school-run, your front lock engages and can be remotely controlled through your phone (just in case someone needs to run back!). You can monitor all of your home CCTV whilst you’re away, or get alerts whenever the front door is opened (so you know when the kids have come home).

It’s also about making entertainment more entertaining.

It’s one thing to have a cinema-sized TV, it’s another to have a cinematic experience. At Communitec AV, our smart-home integrations ensure that your entertaining spaces are true experiences. Remote-controlled technology, however, needs to be secure. That’s why, at Communitec AV, we use encryption methods that are military grade. Life truly is easier, safer and more enjoyable with smart-home technology. Even more than this – smart-home technology is incredibly eco-friendly. Not only are each of our systems highly-tuned to reduce waste electricity, they also respond depending on whether you are home or not, and they deliver the exact right levels for your personal comfort. That means they learn, or deliver, exactly how light or dark you want your home to be, and how long you need it to be heated for. If you head to bed early, all your lights can be turned off with the touch of a single button – and your heating can be remotely shut down, or engaged as you travel home from work. Smart-home technology is personal – and a good smart-home installer will build all of their integrations around your needs and desires. A smart-home is, after all, a home. Whether you think you’d enjoy extended control of eco-friendly, impressive lighting, improving your home security, or gaining all-round smartcontrol of your devices, smart-home solutions are the future of home comforts. There you have it! Smart-home technology is about improving every aspect of your home’s devices in order to make life easier, safer and more enjoyable.

It’s all about making life easier and safer with smart control.

Imagine having a movie-night and – at the touch of a button on your phone or all-in-one remote control – you lower the blinds, turn the lights to a low dim, drop your cinema screen, or power up your cinema TV and have the latest film ready to play. Once it begins, the lights turn off, and the sound is broadcast through high-quality, surround-sound speakers to give the full cinema effect.

s the warmth of summer arrives bringing with it vibrant flowers and luscious greens, it’s the perfect time to give exterior spaces a new lease of life. With a palette of 132 timeless shades, the signature depth of Farrow & Ball colour is available in three eco-friendly paint finishes suitable for exteriors, so outside areas can be just as inspiring as exquisitely decorated interior rooms. Whatever the style of your home and garden, and the look you are creating, there are many ways to introduce colour to exteriors, from exterior walls, front doors and window frames to garden furniture, fences and plant pots. Farrow & Ball head of creative, Charlotte Cosby said: “Being creative when painting outdoors can help show a sense of personal style. “You don’t need acres of land or lots of garden furniture to create an inspiring outside area. If you have minimal space to play with, look at metal railings, masonry walls or a garden bench as an opportunity to freshen up your garden with some colour. “Choosing the same colour for the interior and exterior of your home is a lovely way to create a thoughtfully cohesive scheme. To create a sense of flow, try taking your wall colour and using the same hue on a flowerpot or bench within your garden. This will really connect the two together and can often make your rooms feel bigger as they seemingly extend out of the window and into your outdoor space. “Don’t be afraid to layer colours to add interest to your garden scheme. Using a combination of complementary colours on outdoor furniture is a brilliant way to do just this, accents of strong colours like Radicchio, St Giles Blue and Inchrya Blue would be perfect for this effect. “Alternatively, choosing colour with a natural feel like fresh greens Lichen and Green Blue and heathery purples like Brassica and Calluna will create a cohesive feel in the garden and will complement the colours of nature. Soft multi-tonal blues like Oval Room Blue will echo the skies of warmer seasons and is perfect for summer houses.” Available in Exterior Eggshell, Exterior Masonry and Full Gloss, Farrow & Ball exterior paints are perfect for brightening up tired brickwork or adding pops of bold colour to exterior woodwork and metal. Made using the finest quality ingredients with hard-wearing formulations, all three finishes have been designed to protect exterior surfaces and withstand the elements. Pick Full Gloss for a striking finish, reach for a tin of Exterior Eggshell for a more relaxed feel or Exterior Masonry as the perfect finish for your house and garden walls.

A lounge is traditionally a space for relaxing and entertaining and increasingly, a room to recuperate and feel uplifted, away from the daily grind of our digital lifestyles. By Kerry Allan Use the following top trends as a guide when furnishing your lounge to create the perfect sanctuary at the end of a hard day. 1 Kale – not just a food trend While dusty pink and clay-pink shades remain a favourite with designers, Pantone’s colour of the year ‘Greenery’ is the inspiration behind a host of furnishings. If you’re not bold enough to paint the walls or carpet your floor this ‘fresh and zesty yellow-green’, settle for a splash of an accent colour – such as the less vibrant ‘Kale’ – with a cushion, a chair, or indoor cacti and succulents, which continue to be the houseplants of choice for 2017.

2 What a corker “The more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their innate cravings to immerse themselves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world,” said Pantone when launching its colour of the year. It’s no surprise that nature is another key trend for 2017, providing the perfect partner to ‘Greenery’ and a way to bring more of the ‘outdoors in’ during the summer months. Create a welcoming feeling at the flick of a switch with a wicker or bamboo ceiling light, or invest in a cork table lamp as experts predict a cork comeback. As well as helping you feel harmonious and calm, this nature-inspired trend will also provide a great talking point when entertaining friends.

3 Lush velvet Hugely popular on the catwalk, velvet is back in full swing as an interior trend that brings sophistication and serenity into your life. Opulent and elegant, velvet is cosy in winter and warm in summer. A striking pastel velvet sofa guarantees a gorgeous luxurious feel to your lounge. 4 Mirror, mirror Decorating with mirrors adds instant class and the illusion of space for a small lounge. From contemporary and art deco, to traditional styles, mirrors reflect both natural and artificial light that will brighten your lounge (and more importantly, your mood) day and night. 5 Be more Danish Sometimes the simplest steps can have the biggest impact. If you can’t afford to splash out on redecorating or new furniture, never underestimate the power of a candle to provide a flickering escape from the business of the day and give you an instant ‘Hygge’ moment – the ubiquitous Scandi trend Hygge (pronounced ‘hueguh’) of creating a warm, cosy feeling in the home. So whether you’re inspired to pick up the paintbrush or simply add a few on-trend accessories to your lounge, enjoy creating a peaceful and calming hideaway devoid of digital distraction – just remember to leave your phone/tablet/laptop in another room.

Find luxury in

Orlando, Florida 108 the riverside journals

While this city is best known as the theme park capital of the world, of course, there are many other reasons why adults visit the city each year, even without children, says Ruth Brindle.

Above: Sit back and relax by the Sapphire Falls Caribbean-style pool. Below: Take a swing at some golf at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando.

There are accommodations to suit every taste and price point imaginable here, including a vast number of self-catering options which we Brits love (check out the luxury options at www.jeevesfloridarentals.com). But over the many years I’ve visited, I’ve been drawn to the increasing number of upmarket hotels complemented by a sophisticated offering of entertainment, fine dining and spa pampering. Here are my latest recommendations of where to stay, what to do and dates for your diary:

Universal-ly luscious Universal Orlando Resort’s five themed hotels all have their own very distinctive character from rock ‘n’ roll to Italian elegance. The latest is the Caribbean-inspired Loews Sapphire Falls which is a fabulous, relaxed haven set around a large, palm-fringed ‘lagoon’. With so much space and comfy loungers to enjoy in secluded spots, it feels exclusive. My suite was super spacious with a full dining table and comfy settee, plus a vast bathroom and separate TV in the bedroom. I also loved the free water transport to the Universal parks where hotel guests get early admission and enjoyed choosing from 75 rums for cocktails at the Strong Water Tavern. For more information, visit www.universalorlando.co.uk

Disney dream The rooms at Sapphire Falls.

The things I most loved about staying at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort which has recently enjoyed a £96 million renovation was my beautiful, bright room with balcony, enjoying the most melt-in-the-mouth steak I’ve ever eaten at Shula’s restaurant; and taking an evening stroll to Disney’s Boardwalk with its waterside restaurants and shops. The resort is nestled between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios with water transport to take you to both, plus transport to all the other Disney attractions – so convenient! There are five pools, two health clubs, a spa and tennis and you can book your preferred rides and attractions 60 days in advance though the Disney FastPass+ service. Any Disney veterans will know how valuable that is. Find out more at www.swandolphin.com

Spa heaven Two luxury hotels that offer golf courses as well as spas are the Waldorf Astoria Orlando and the Rosen Shingle Creek. The Waldorf, the first of that name to open outside New York, is minutes from the Disney parks and after a hard day on the thrill rides you can recoup some energy at its spa. If you don’t have time for a full treatment, enjoy the tea lounge, Jacuzzi and steam room for £15 a day. You can even book a ‘bath butler’ for your room at a cost of £50 who would draw your candlelit bath, sprinkle orchids on top and leave a ‘blooming hot tea’ to help you relax. (If only my husband was so obliging!) www.waldorfastoriaorlando.com The Rosen Shingle Creek hotel is a 10-minute drive from Universal Orlando, five minutes from SeaWorld, and also has a gorgeous spa. I enjoyed a super indulgent body treatment which involved being slathered in Everglades mud and wrapped in foil to bake luxuriously for half an hour. Heaven. Then it was the turn of my face to get ‘the treatment’. This was the most thorough and fantastic facial I’ve ever had, www.rosenshinglecreek.com

Enjoy a rum cocktail at the Strong Water Tavern.

Fine dine for less You are spoilt for choice when looking for excellent places to eat in Orlando but if you travel between August 25 and October 1 this year you can enjoy prix fixe, three-course dinners at more than 70 of the city’s top restaurants for the bargain price of just $35 (£27) per person during Magical Dining Month. It makes sense to make your way to the city’s upmarket Restaurant Row on Sand Lake Road to make your choice of eatery from those taking part in the popular event. They range from Polynesian-fusion, to Italian and American with a modern twist. At the ultrachic Slate restaurant with its open kitchen and cool bar the innovative menu offers super fresh and often locally sourced ingredients. It’s obviously a top hang-out in this upmarket area. Choose from charcuterie and cheese plates, inventive starters, pizza, salads, pasta, and mains. My hearth roasted snapper and cornmeal spoonbread was gorgeous. Pandora –The World of AVATAR at Animal Kingdom will be the latest attraction to open at Walt Disney World this year. Visitors will be able to enjoy a flight simulator-based banshee experience and a boat ride through the mind-blowing landscapes of Pandora. Find out more at www.disneyworld.co.uk At Universal this year an exciting tropical island-themed water park Volcano Bay will open its doors and is a welcome addition to the existing two parks Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, www.universalorlando.co.uk

Summer exercise ideas – with Better

Leon Popplewell, Sports Psychologist GLL/Better

My First Reiki Experience eiki is the beautiful life energy that flows through all living things. A person’s energy should be strong and free-flowing. When this is the case a person is physically, mentally, and emotionally balanced and their body and mind are in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance. The art of Reiki is a healing technique whereby the Reiki Practitioner administers energy healing through placing their hands above the client’s body. This “life force energy” flows through to activate and strengthen the body’s natural healing processes to help restore mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Reiki simultaneously works to enable the body to heal itself. Through personal experience I have found Reiki to be a powerful healing method which serves to align and balance you in a beautiful, natural, gentle and non-invasive way. Receiving Reiki healing is a deeply relaxing and peaceful experience, which will leave you feeling balanced and rejuvenated. Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all stress, tension, anxiety, fear and negative emotions to reach our natural state of health, balance, peace and well-being. Shaylini makes you feel relaxed and at ease on meeting her, you will also have a full confidential consultation pre any treatment. I came out feeling very invigorated and ready to take on the world. ith the winter blues a distant memory the coming of summer brings the promise of lighter days, warmer temperatures and the opportunity to be ourselves again in our favourite clothes. Seasonal fluctuations in eating habits and exercise levels are a real psychological phenomenon with summer typically being the time of year where we weigh less and exercise more so why not make the most of this natural change? Here are some trending summer fitness ideas that will shake up your routine for summer and get you looking and feeling great.

Running

Running is huge at the moment. You can’t go far without stumbling across a running club and can find a race pretty much every weekend. There are also ‘get into run’ classes where even the apprehensive can be given the support they need to build up a regular habit.

Meditation

There’s nothing new about meditation. Meditation is a mental training and calming exercise, and taking time out of your fitness schedule to focus on gathering your thoughts and slowing yourself down is important in combatting the stress of daily life.

Minimalism

Do your workouts include push-ups, squats or pull-ups? This is Body Weight Training and is a back to basics, minimalist, approach to fitness. Popular in parks or outside spaces, do this with an exercise partner to make it more fun and keep motivated.

Business interview with Aya Husni Bey The Benefits of Playtime What is the name of your business and can you give us an introduction? My company is Creativity Unmasked, and I am a practitioner at Therapy Harley Street. I am a Holistic Counsellor and specialise in using art in adult therapeutic practice. People tend to think of play as childish rather than being childlike, however even as adults when we are immersed in play we tend to let go and talk more freely. Giving adults the opportunity to relax and engage in creative play activities gives them the opportunity to engage in sensitive subjects, to open up and explore their feelings and emotions. We can use a number of different activities such as role play, clay works, drawing and painting. Really I take the lead from the individual and work with them to support their creative needs and reflect that.

How long have you been in business? I have been working in this field since 2010 and set up Creativity Unmasked in 2015. I started at Therapy Harley Street in October 2016.

What inspired you to start the business? I originally trained with children and worked on play therapy as a way to engage with the child. However it became apparent that other adults around the child were also benefiting from the therapy and it grew from there.

114 the riverside journals

What sets your business aside from others in the field/area?

It was fascinating talking with Aya and a real insight into the benefits of play. We could all learn something from being more childlike and less childish at times!

In my practice we reflect the needs of the client. It may be that they just want to talk but there are so many other opportunities. For example, I sometimes use a sand tray where the client can create a small world context, using symbols to represent people and challenges, where individual circumstances can be played out in a safe place. We are very client led. Technology is turning the world around and we’ve all got to adapt and change at such as pace. We need different therapeutic methods to respond to people’s needs. Therapy requires a broader spectrum and we are meeting that need.

What about your business makes you the most proud? Working in connection with individuals and inspiring others through support. Ultimately it’s beneficial, helping others. This is what really matters and I find it very motivating.

What plans do you have for the future? I would like to travel and deliver therapy abroad, set up my own centre for practice and to offer training to others. I also want to continue with my charity work with the Prince’s Trust and Path Retreats.

What’s the best way to contact you? I can be contacted at aya@therapyharleystreet.co.uk or by phone on 07727 170906.
