Booking in for a haircut should be part of your pre-holiday prep. “I would suggest getting your hair cut just before you go on holiday, as this will ensure that any dry or split ends which are especially prone to damage, will be removed before you spend time in the sun,” says Bruce. To ensure your hair remains healthy and shiny, book in for a treatment whilst at the salon or opt for an at home alternative such as Sassoon Professional Intense Restore, a deep conditioning treatment that will lock in moisture. Quick tip: “For a slick summer style on the beach, apply a hydrating conditioner to the roots and then comb your hair back off your face, pulling the product down through the length,” says Bruce, “ensuring you look effortlessly stylish without sacrificing your hair’s health.”
Sun proof your locks with Sassoon Dry right Salon
“Never rub hair dry with a towel after being in the pool/sea as this will break hair and cause damage to the cuticle making hair appear dull and straw like,” says Bruce. Instead leave it to dry naturally, adding texture for a ‘surfy’ look by twisting individual sections as it dries. Rinse salt water and chlorine with fresh water after every dip and reapply a sun protection spray to prevent chemicals penetrating the hair and causing drying effects.

Pimp up your ponytail The classic ponytail has been given a new lease of life this year. For an instant update, perfect for hot humid days in the sun, add a touch of tousled texture. To create the look, spray Wella Professional, Ocean Spritz onto dry hair close to the roots, then scrunch your hair using your fingers and air-dry.
Welcome one and all to our exciting Summer Edition of the RJs. I want to start my letter with a rant – I keep hearing the words, “We’re going digital, we don’t do print any more”. Well, I say, “Long live print”. I love flicking through a high gloss magazine or turning the pages of a really good book and obviously you do too or you wouldn’t be reading this – I rest my case. Rant over. This issue we have some lovely fashion for the girls and the boys and a must-read for me is how to protect your skin in the sun. Your tan doesn’t, however, have to suffer as we show you how you can bronze and not burn. Our regular features are all bursting with summer flavours and full of good ideas whether you’re planning a wedding or sending your loved one off to school. There’s something in the summer issue for everyone so enjoy the page flicking and I’ll speak to you again in August. Until then, stay safe. 101 and Historical Reverso linked to England
J
aeger-LeCoultre is celebrating the 85th anniversary of its Reverso watch this year which is still a very important watch for the luxury watch brand. It was started by a Swiss businessman called César de Trey who was at a Polo match in India and one of the players challenged him to create a model that was tough enough to withstand a Polo game without incurring any damage. With the help of two other Europeans they came up with a watch that was capable of sliding within its frame and turning completely over on itself. The Reverso has been a hit ever since. Jaeger-LeCoultre also has its own watch calibre, the Calibre 101, which is the world’s smallest mechanical manually-wound watch movement and is made up of 98 components which weigh in total barely one gramme. Both the Reverso and the Calibre 101 have connections with British Royalty so in recognition of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations, Jaeger-LeCoultre has loaned Berry’s Jewellers four of its heritage watches to have on show in their Windsor store. These are historical watches that are not for sale and are rarely available to view in public so Berry’s are privileged and honoured to have them on show in their store until the end of June 2016.

Marco Pierre White is most welcome in Windsor ecently I was doing my usual stroll down the Long Walk, then back into Windsor town centre, along the High Street, and there it was, advertised in the window of the chic Castle Hotel, ‘Marco Pierre White Steakhouse soon to open.’ As a local and more importantly, as a foodie, I was thrilled, little did I know that soon I’d be speaking with the man himself life really is full of little surprises! So, why did Marco choose Windsor? “I always say, they choose me, I used to live in west London, I have friends in this area, lovely part of the country” having had a stint working on a stud farm, growing up chums with jockey Frankie Dettori, he appreciates Windsor’s equestrian links; such as the local annual horse show. We discussed local eateries, with me saying that apart from Heston’s enclave in Bray including the famous Fat Duck and the Roux brothers Waterside Inn of which Marco claims the best maître D in Britain can be found – Diego, I was disappointed with Windsor town centre offerings, until his arrival of course! After all, the aforementioned are not everyday, rather they are a treat, whereas Marco’s steakhouse offers indisputably good food at an affordable price, which hotel guests, locals and visitors alike can savour. What can you expect on the menu? Well, you guessed it, steak! But made to the exacting Marco standard, who, by the way, personally enjoys his steak medium rare (because he likes the contents hot) accompanied by a glass of burgundy, “much nicer than claret”, and eaten with chips and salad, served in stages. He recounts his early career days, working at Michelin starred Yorkshire restaurant - The Box Tree, “if someone asked for a blue steak at The Box Tree, they’d put it on the rack above the stove, so it penetrated the heat into it, then they would flash fry it, so blue, but it wasn’t cold in the middle. Chef Michael Lawson always said, the perfect blue steak should be like it’s walked through a warm room, if you want a blue steak, have a steak à la minute or a steak tartare, don’t have a thick fillet – it’s not nice” If you don’t fancy a steak, there are of course other appetising alternatives - roast belly of pork with butter beans and honey roasting juices or mouthwatering mushroom macaroni, the list goes on. Marco came from humble beginnings in Leeds, where the contribution to gastronomy was mushy peas with a hot pork pie – gelatin oozing out into the runny pea mush… His father sent him to Harrogate to find a kitchen apprenticeship, but it wasn’t until he started at The Box Tree, hearing tales of Michelin starred chefs, that his journey to becoming the first 3 Michelin starred British chef was ignited “they would tell me with great detail, it was like gastronomic Jackanory” I was totally mesmerised, the combination of that and the combination of what was on the plate was what inspired me” yet, unfazed by his stars “they are very generous now the Michelin stars, its like going to a wedding, they dish them out like confetti” it is sublime simple food that drives him. “I love a slow roast shoulder of lamb, crunchy belly pork, creamed potatoes, chip butty, fish and chips; no tartar sauce, instead with salt, malt vinegar and mushy peas, scotch egg with salad cream, pork pie with English mustard, ham sandwich with tomato and Branston… our palates are formed when we are a child, and what we loved as a child will stay with us.”

The The Garibaldi Pub Astor Grill
C
hris Lillitou and Amanda Baker have taken over The Garibaldi, a Victorian pub in heart of Hedsor village life in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, and turned it into the most amazing gastro experience under the creative hand of head chef Ben Haywood. All the staff at The Garibaldi are up-to-date on the fresh produce used to deliver everything from the exquisite meals to real local ales and artisan ciders – and all presented by them with a beaming smile showing how proud they are of their products. We were privileged to eat there for dinner one sunny evening recently. We were welcomed with warm cheer and a chilled glass of house wine, a dry one which suited my pallet. The menu is definitely gastro pub with ‘specials’ on offer every day. The starters included such interesting combinations as spiced pumpkin salad with caramelized walnut and feta at £6.50, to gin and coriander cured salmon with horseradish and lemon at £9.00. Each starter we tried was executed perfectly and tasted delicious. The main dishes again offered something for all tastes and the soy braised pork neck with chilli caramel crackling suited my needs for the evening while one of my colleagues had the ‘special’ which, on that day, was mussels in a white wine sauce. We ordered vegetables and extra hand cut chips with truffle and parmesan but, to be honest, the dishes all came dressed with enough to satisfy a decent appetite. Alas we had no room left for a dessert but they all sounded amazing.

he Astor Grill is a fairly new restaurant and a welcome addition to Cliveden House, Taplow, situated within the charming stable block, which many years ago housed many of Lord Astor’s most prized fillies. The restaurant has maintained the equestrian theme, including the old grids for drainage running along the middle of the dining room floor – probably used years ago for drainage when washing the horses down – horse-themed blinds, cushions and pictures on the walls, even individual dining cubicles which were probably the partitioning of the old stables. The restaurant has 48 covers, with adequate outdoor seating in a pretty courtyard setting with panelled trellis and planters. It is open to serve brunch, lunch or dinner. The menu is overseen by Executive Chef André Garrett and its main focus is a mixture of classic American and British dishes. The name for the grill was adapted from the name of the Astor family who owned the house from the 1900s. After much deliberation I chose the Crispy Cornish Squid with devilled tomato mayo priced at £11/£16 and my partner chose the Tanqueray-cured Loch Duart Salmon with crispy shaved fennel and orange dill priced at £12/£18. For our main dishes I opted for the Astor Burger 8oz handmade beef paté and smoked raclette, house relish and spiced carrot slaw with fries at £18 and my partner chose the Grilled Fillet of Cod caponata, with Jersey Royals, sprouting broccoli and lemon almonds at £22, served with chargrilled vegetables for an extra £4.50. This was accompanied by a Camel Valley Bacchus dry white wine from Cornwall priced at £44 a bottle. It would have seemed rude not to finish with the recommended pudding choices, so, I had the Baked Strawberry Cheesecake and I must say I was slightly envious of my partner’s choice, and the waiter’s recommendation, which was the Raspberry Jam Soufflé with lemon thyme custard. Both desserts were £9 each. All three courses were delicious and our compliments go to the Executive Chef and his team, and the Astor Grill which offers its customers a delightfully relaxed dining experience.

I Savoy by Tony Cox

The
t was a pleasure and an honour to be asked to visit The Savoy and experience an overnight stay at this fine establishment in the heart of London. The Savoy was built in 1889 and was the first truly luxurious hotel of its time, situated in a fantastic location only a short walking distance from Covent Garden and nearby Theatreland. When we arrived the doorman ushered us into the foyer, where we checked in and were shown to our room. Our One-Bedroom Suite, complete with a kingsized bed bedecked with luxurious Italian linen, was filled with light spilling from the stunning Murano chandeliers and reflecting off the marble floors. Leading from the bedroom was an opulent bathroom, complete with Le Labo toiletries and ‘rainhead shower’. Afternoon tea can be taken in the light and airy Thames Foyer where daylight floods through the glass dome making it the perfect place to relax with friends after a hard day’s shopping. For pre-dinner drinks, where better than the famous American Bar with its extensive choice of cocktails, or you can head into the beautiful ‘Art Deco’ Beaufort Bar, decorated in black and gold with plush upholstery, deep carpets, polished finishes and lots of gold leaf. The Beaufort Bar is built on the former cabaret stage and prides itself on pushing the boundaries of cocktail making. There is an impressive choice of restaurants and bars within the hotel itself; the famous Savoy Grill is but one, with Chef Kim Woodward, and Simpson’s-in-the-Strand equally offering perfect classic British cooking with old favourites like steak and kidney pie. We had the pleasure of dining at Kaspar’s Seafood Bar and Grill with stunning views of the River Thames in an art deco setting. Executive Chef Holger Jackisch, who has created a menu that focuses on locally sourced seafood, beautifully prepared and elegantly presented, leads The Savoy’s culinary team across all the hotel’s restaurants and bars. After eating and drinking to your heart’s content there is always the very well equipped gym on the 3rd floor complete with a sauna, steam room and swimming pool with loungers scattered around the pool where guests can relax, and a wide range of beauty treatments and therapies are on offer in the Beauty and Fitness Centre. This really was a fabulous experience and a very special stay at one of the most luxurious hotels in the world.
Where to eat in Canary Wharf?

We’ve picked out some of our favourite places to satisfy your hunger for whatever mood you may be in.
We love afternoon tea onboard a super yacht There are so many afternoon tea concepts in London it could almost get tiresome but when you have the option to do it onboard a super yacht suddenly it’s a game changer. The Sunborn super yacht hotel on Royal Victoria Dock has partnered with The Hummingbird Bakery to create its Under the Sea Afternoon Tea, which is available every day between 12.30pm and 5pm. They serve delicious cream filled choux pastry shells, macarons and a selection of unique cupcakes with frosting in the shape of sea horses, anchors, starfish, lighthouses, shells and yachts. The bakery has even designed a cupcake exclusively for the occasion. Two people can tuck into four cupcakes, two brownies, a selection of finger sandwiches, scones and a pot of tea, not forgetting that evertempting glass of bubbly as an optional addition.
We love dining on the terrace Ibérica’s awesome Spanish eats are always a great dining choice so when you couple that with a bit of post work sunshine at Ibérica La Terraza, it brings a touch of the holiday feeling to the corporate day. London’s authentic Spanish restaurant reopened Ibérica La Terraza’s doors in the spring to once again deliver the authentic atmosphere of Spain’s famous terrace culture to the city for the summer period. Located just moments from Canary Wharf tube station, opposite the established Ibérica Restaurant in a leafy corner of Cabot Square, Ibérica La Terraza’s bespoke cocktails, sangrias, cured meats and cheeses and signature tapas await. It is almost impossible to pass up on the twice-cooked lamb burger with fennel. Wash it down with a red wine sangria infused with mint, cucumber and fresh fruit.
We love brunch with friends The weekend is for meeting up with friends to swap stories over brunch and since this can take a few hours, a bottomless brunch at Roka makes for an ideal reservation. The award-winning Japanese restaurant serves contemporary Japanese robatayaki cuisine. It overlooks Canada Square Park so is a suitable vantage point for observing the goings on down below and spotting who is out to play in the busy district. Guests are greeted with a Bellini, Bloody Mary or green tea and passion fruit iced tea. As for the food, the pic ‘n’ mix starters from the counter are a great opportunity to flirt with the offerings without immersing yourself fully into a tasting menu. Indulge in sushi, tempura, hot soup, chicken wings and gyoza to find out if the restaurant is your kind of place. Then follow that with a main dish from the robata or kitchen. The cedar roast baby chicken is married with flavours of chilli, lemon and garlic soy while the baby back ribs are glazed with spiced master stock and cashew nuts. There are about six mains to choose from after which a dessert platter tops off the meal.
We love picnics on the lawn Picnic food has to be the best and freshest local produce you can find because it is all about taking a hunk of just-baked bread and pairing it with top quality cold cuts, cheeses and fresh fruit. There truly is a fine art to the perfect picnic – the right spot, accessories and, of course, the food – but thankfully the experts at Tom’s Kitchen delis in Canary Wharf and St Katharine Docks have packed hampers of classic favourites sourced from some of the best producers in the UK. Emmental ham and salad, egg mayo and tomato, and smoked salmon and cucumber baguettes, crisps, popcorn, flapjacks and a piece of fruit have been selected to create a nostalgic British picnic. Pick one up and head over to the big summer screen in Canada Square Park to relax and watch the Wimbledon Championships or the Rio Olympics. There will be entertainment on the lawns every day from June 27 to August 21.
We love boogie woogie If you haven’t already been over to check out the live music at Boisdale on Cabot Place, then maybe it is about time you did. The restaurant-cum-whisky-specialist, cigar boutique and jazz bar is hands down the coolest spot in this area with a supper club feel to it. Jools Holland serves as the sommelier of sound bringing in the best musicians for the daily calendar of live music acts that perform on stage in the restaurant. The menu is Scottish fare and the best of British. Roast Blackface haggis, ragu of wild Highland venison and poached Cornish sea bass feature on the à la carte menu and the cheese menu has more than 20 British cheeses to choose from. What’s special about this place is its cigar library and tasting room that has some rare vintage tobacco that predates Castro’s revolution and if single malt whisky is your thing, they have a staggering selection of over 900 of them including some priceless bottles from defunct distilleries of the 1930s and 40s.
We love being naughty, really naughty

When it’s treat day and you want to go off the rails with a massive hit of calories, you don’t want those calories to be just any old calories, you want them to be so tasty and over the top they are worth all of the effort in the gym and all of the glasses of wine you have politely declined. When we want to do that we go to The Big Easy. This American barbecue and lobster shack has limitless hog roasts, 35oz rib eye steaks, whole lobster mac ‘n’ cheese and unlimited boozy barbecue brunches that go on for up to two hours. They even have weekday happy hours from 7am to 10am in case you wake up and fancy a lobster slider washed down with a Martini. It’s everyone’s guilty secret.

Everybody needs good neighbours…but new survey reveals we haven’t all got them Three-quarters say they live on a friendly street and over half (51%) of us socialise with our neighbours But 56% have argued with neighbours and at least a quarter of those (27%) say they have argued many times Northern Ireland, London and the North East say they have the friendliest streets A new survey* by Sarah Beeny’s estate agent, Tepilo, has revealed the state of neighbourly relations in Britain, and it’s a mixed bag. Whilst over half (51%) of us socialise with our neighbours and three quarters (76%) of us say we live on a friendly street, more than half of Brits (56%) say they have had at least one argument with their neighbours and at least a quarter of those (27%) say they have argued many times. Just a friendly word each morning
When neighbours aren’t good friends However, almost a quarter (24%) of those surveyed said the street they live on is unfriendly, with 45 per cent of those people saying that this is due to everyone keeping themselves to themselves. More than half of Brits (56%) say they have had at least one argument with their neighbours, with at least a quarter of those (27%) saying they have argued many times. In London, 72 per cent of people have had an argument with their neighbours whereas in Wales, East Anglia and Yorkshire six in 10 have never argued with their neighbours, making these the best areas for peaceful neighbourly relations. Sarah Beeny, owner of Tepilo, said: “It’s great to hear how friendly we are with our neighbours generally and this brings fantastic benefits to local communities and general quality of life. Neighbourly relations are certainly varied across Britain and whilst it all happens in London – socialising, play dates and street parties; Wales, East Anglia and Yorkshire certainly seem like more peaceful places to live! “Living on a friendly street where everyone socialises together can add value to your property and it’s definitely worth checking out what the neighbours are like when you are looking to buy a house. You could start with asking the vendor about the neighbours, but be aware just because they don’t get on with the neighbours doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t either. Check out neighbouring houses to see if they look well cared-for and pop by at the weekend to get a feel for the atmosphere. If you’re thinking of putting in a serious offer, see if neighbours are in and introduce yourself, ask what the street and neighbourhood are like.” Teplio is an estate agent owned by property guru and TV personality, Sarah Beeny. She set up Tepilo to help redesign the property selling process around the customer, offering hugely reduced fees and 24/7 customer support from a highly experienced team working to help their customers secure the best possible price for their homes. Tepilo also offers customers an easy to use website and an app that allows them to track their property sale on the go and receive instant notifications.

We’re generally a friendly bunch, with over half of us (51%) saying we socialise with neighbours. Of these, 17 per cent go so far as saying they’re great friends with their neighbours and socialise regularly. A further 28 per cent say they’re friendly with their neighbours if they bump into them on the street but they don’t actually socialise. Three quarters (76%) of us also think they live on a friendly street with the majority of those who think so (53%) saying this is because everyone smiles and chats when they bump into each other. Britain’s friendliest streets can be found in Northern Ireland, London and the North East where the percentage of those who say they live on a friendly street rises to 86 per cent, 83 per cent and 81 per cent respectively. People interact with their neighbours on a regular basis, with over a third (38%) seeing their neighbours a couple of times a week and 18 per cent seeing theirs every day. Over a third (39%) of us are friends with five neighbours or more. Three in 10 (30%) hold annual street parties and four in ten (40%) say children on their street play together regularly, with the highest play date rates in London (57%) and Wales (40%).

aint & Paper Library was founded over 20 years ago by London-based interior designer and acclaimed colour expert, David Oliver. Providing inspiration, colour expertise and design ideas for interior decorators, architects, specifiers and discerning homeowners worldwide, Paint & Paper Library is credited with an unrivalled understanding of colour balance, mood and light in contemporary interiors. Under new ownership, the brand has streamlined its colour offer, raised the quality of its finishes to include the mattest emulsion paint on the market, and created a new colourcard which contains the proven Paint Library colours and 40 unique new shades. Paint & Paper Library’s colour card is made up of two palettes: ‘Architectural Colours’ and ‘Original Colours’. ‘Architectural Colours’ is an easy-to-use, colour-by-number system, designed to provide simple alternatives to white. It comes in a choice of 95 graduated shades, individually formulated using different strengths of the same pigments to achieve subtle shade differentiations within any interior. Arranged chromatically in 19 groups of five gradual shades, numbered I, II, III, IV and V and ranging from light to dark, warm to cool, each tone can be used either individually or in effortless combination on ceilings, cornices, walls and woodwork. The 85 ‘Original Colours’ are an eclectic mix and can be used independently or as part of the same scheme to add more depth, or to provide accents or highlights, without disturbing an overall sense of colour balance. Inspired by historical, traditional and contemporary interiors from all over the world, the ‘Original Colours’ are tremendously usable shades bursting with personality and sophistication. The latest colours to be added to this comprehensive offer include Porcelain I–V and evocatively named shades such as ‘Paris Rooftops’, ‘Sea Nor Sky’, ‘Stable Green’, ‘Aeoli’ and ‘Geisha’. Marketing Director, Ruth Mottershead explains: “We looked at the existing colour offer very carefully, editing shades and adjusting the balance between the Architectural Colours and the Original Colours. We’ve introduced tones at both ends of the spectrum, such as ‘Clean White’ and ‘New Black’, with nuances of colours in between. The new shades really complete the look, complementing the existing palette whilst taking the re-launched colour card into a new, exciting dimension.” Paint & Paper Library now offers its full colour palette in five superlative finishes. The signature finish, Pure Flat Emulsion, is a matt, water-based emulsion paint with the ultimate soft chalky finish. Its high pigmentation gives a profound depth of colour and its premium base ingredients make this the flattest emulsion available. Pure Flat Emulsion is also microporous, to allow the fabric of a building to breathe; an important consideration for historic buildings. The water-based finishes, collectively known as Architects’ paints, are designed for all areas of the modern home. Fully washable, these finishes do not resort to the aesthetic compromise of a higher sheen. Architect’s Matt Emulsion provides a high performance water-based alternative to Pure Flat Emulsion. Completely washable, it offers excellent scuff and stain resistance. Architects’ Eggshell is a low sheen, tough and durable water-based acrylic paint suitable for all interior woodwork and walls, especially for kitchens and bathrooms where condensation may be problematic. It can also be used for metalwork, furniture and conventional radiators. Paint & Paper Library also offers low VOC oil-based Eggshell and Gloss paints; the choice of the professional given their excellent flow, smooth finish and legendary adhesion to interior and exterior woodwork. Paint & Paper Library makes every effort to minimise its negative impact on both the environment and health. All the company’s paints are traditionally manufactured in the UK to exceptionally high standards. They use the highest quality eco-friendly ingredients and meet all global regulations on VOC solvent; formulated to make an impact on your walls, not on the environment. Paint & Paper Library paints will be available nationally and internationally through a network of distributors, by mail order and online at www.paintandpaperlibrary.com.

arrods is delighted to announce the launch of ‘Made with Love and Precision’: their first-ever storewide Fine Watch takeover which will hero the exceptional watch portfolio that has firmly established the Fine Watch Room at Harrods as the ultimate destination for fine watches. Harrods has worked closely with the world’s finest watch brands to secure an extraordinary exhibition of men’s and ladies’ timepieces, all of which will be launched exclusively at Harrods during the campaign. For six weeks from 1st July, these exclusive timepieces – some of which have been specially conceived for the occasion – will take pride of place both in the Fine Watch Room in the exhibition space and in the Brompton Road windows. This will be the first fine watch window takeover in the history of Harrods. The window displays all along the Brompton Road will focus on artisan craftsmanship and rare materials: an oversized version of each hero timepiece will be embedded into a particular piece of material in its dedicated window, carefully chosen to accentuate the distinctive identity of each brand and to highlight the provenance of design and materials in each timepiece. The Brompton Road Exhibition Windows will be dedicated to Roger Dubuis, who will celebrate the global retail launch of the ladies’ Black Velvet World Premiere Diamonds and the Excalibur Skeleton Flying Tourbillon with Black Spinels. To celebrate the occasion, a number of watch brands have created bespoke men’s and women’s timepieces which will be launched at Harrods exclusively during ‘Made with Love and Precision’. Key horological highlights will include a bespoke, limitededition Panerai Luminor Marina, made especially for the occasion and featuring a green dial and ‘Harrods’ engraving on the caseback; as well as ‘The London Chronograph’ – a unique edition timepiece designed by Speake Marin exclusively for Harrods and dedicated to the watchmaker’s early years. In addition, HYT has conceived a special carbon edition of its signature Skull Bad Boy exclusively for Harrods featuring an Arabic dial, while Baume and Mercier have created a bespoke strap in blush pink, which will debut alongside the launch of the brand’s ladies’ Petite Promesse collection. Other notable launches will include Bremont’s B2 Marine Chronometer which has been created in celebration of the brand’s partnership with the America’s Cup and is the only clock in the exhibition; Breguet’s Harrods “Exclusive” Classique 7337 – the first ever edition of this particular model to feature a blue dial – and Omega’s Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon Meteorite which premiered at Basel in March 2016 and features an innovative meteorite dial.

F
lowers can give the wow factor to your wedding day – the bridal bouquet; bouquets for bridesmaid(s); buttonholes for the groom, best man, fathers and mothers; flowers for the ceremony site and centerpieces for the reception tables. But first find a florist who will get the job done right. Meet at least two/three florists to compare styles. Check out the venue, magazines, websites for recommended florists or obtain referrals from your friends/family.
The Florist will need to know: Your budget: Most couples allow about 3% of their total wedding budget for flowers and décor – most floral designers will work within the parameters of your budget. Your numbers: To determine quantities/prices, the florist will need to know the number of guests, and how many bouquets/buttonholes etc. are required. Your style: Have a general idea of the look you want, compile an “idea file” of photographs/cuttings of floral designs/colour schemes you like.
Bring to your First Appointment Your ‘Ideas file’ if you have made one. A bridesmaid dress fabric swatch: Important to help the florist suggest coordinating flowers (it’s not enough to say “lavender” because there are so many variations). A photo of the wedding dress: so the florist can suggest complementary bouquet styles. Photographs or a brochure of your ceremony/reception sites: to give the florist an idea of the scale. Don’t forget to ask if they offer any other decorations – and the cost. Ask what flowers are least likely to wilt over the course of the wedding, what happens if specific flowers ordered are not available on the day and if they can guarantee the flowers will be fresh and arrive on time. Be sure to get a written estimate based on what you’ve discussed. Take notes or record on your phone and listen carefully. The florist should point out examples in their portfolio and may make a few quick sketches to show you how they envisage your bouquets/arrangements looking.
The Second Meeting Having committed to a florist, set up a second meeting to finalize the details and make any adjustments. Trust your florist’s knowledge and expertise, and be willing to mix and match your ideas and desires with their recommendations.
The Contract When you sign a contract, florists will normally ask for a 50% deposit, with the balance due the week of the wedding. This should be clearly stated in your contract along with: the number/description/price of each item; the date/ place/time the flowers will be delivered and assembled; any rental fees for vases or decorations that the florist is providing, along with pickup and return procedures plus any other charges.
How to Choose Wedding Flowers It requires a special eye and attention to detail - which is why we get help from the professionals.

America’s most famous highway is celebrating its 90 year anniversary this year so there is no better time to check out some of its most nostalgic attractions. The affectionately-named Mother Road starts in Chicago and travels 2,448 miles across eight states and three time zones all the way to Los Angeles. This ride is about seeing the real America – mom and pop diners, neon signs, roadside motels and homemade pies, not to mention some important historical sites.
Celebrate at a festival.
From bluegrass music and balloon fiestas to chili cook-offs and street parties, there is a year-long calendar of events and festivals taking place in towns and cities along the highway. In Springfield, Missouri, The Birthplace of Route 66 Festival is on from August 12 to 14; The 80th Annual Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo will be on in Vinita, Oklahoma, from August 24 to 27, and the International Mother Road Festival will entertain people in Springfield, Illinois, from September 23 to 25. These are just a few of the events that make this year one to remember for anyone exploring the strip. For more information visit www.historic66. com/events.
Delve into the life of Lincoln Head to Springfield, Illinois, to the hometown of Abraham Lincoln. It is the perfect place to trace the steps of America’s 16th president. You can visit the only home he ever owned, his final resting place as well as a range of Lincoln-themed attractions. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is known to be one of the best presidential museums in America. It will immerse you into his life with interactive exhibits and recreated settings of dramatic moments in his life. The library holds carefully-preserved documents and artefacts and more than 12 million items from Illinois State Historical Library. A truly magical experience awaits at Lincoln’s New Salem, which is a reconstruction of the village where he lived and worked between 1831 and 1837. Period reenactors make the experience come to life, as does the nearby outdoor theatre in the park.
Spray paint a caddie An art installation of 10 Cadillac cars, which were buried into the ground nose down at the side of the highway, has become one of the most loved iconic sights on Route 66. First buried in 1974 by three artists from San Francisco, the cars make up what is known as Cadillac Ranch, which is an ever-evolving art installation as visitors spray paint the caddies creating a new look everyday. The man who commissioned the installation, the late millionaire Stanley Marsh, often said he thought the Cadillacs looked better covered in graffiti than they did when they were put into the ground in their original classic pastel colours. These days hundreds of tourists flock to the site in a cow pasture off of Interstate 40, in Amarillo, Texas, to paint and photograph the cars.
Have a swinging time From its jazz age-style entertainment to its Louis XV interior, The Coleman Theatre in Miami, Oklahoma, is definitely the best place to stop off and indulge in some good ol’ American culture. It is a real jewel, not only because it is one of the largest grand theatres in America, but also because the local community raised funds and put in a joint effort to renovate the building to its original glory. The theatre, which was opened in 1929, offers a full programme of performances and shows, which include classic silent and western movies, amateur dramatics and live music. It also offers free tours to passing visitors.
Quench your thirst What could be more nostalgic than soda pop out of a glass bottle? The Pops Arcadia store on the Oklahoma City stretch of Route 66 pays homage to the famous fizz with its amazing store. Most people’s first sight of the store is its four-tonne pop bottle sculpture, which is visible from miles away as it lights up at night with a multi-coloured neon glow. Inside the store there are more than 600 different flavours of soda to choose from. Brave guests can head to an aisle dedicated to weird sodas that feature more unusual flavours, such as teriyaki beef jerky soda, bacon flavour soda or even ranch dressing flavour soda. Of course there are also hundreds of super tasty flavours, some of which have been sourced from a variety of countries around the world, including Italy, Jamaica, Brazil and England.
Taking on the enormous feat of planning this massive journey can be a daunting task so let a tour company do all the hard work for you. Virgin Holidays, Kuoni, Titan Travel and The American Road Trip Company are among of host of operators which, provide ready-made itineraries to make sure travellers have the drive of their lives. One example is Wexas Travel’s (www.wexastravel.com) selfdrive tour that covers key places on the route including Chicago, Illinois; Springfield, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; Springfield, Missouri; Oklahoma City; Amarillo, Texas; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; The Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona; Las Vegas, Nevada and Santa Monica, California. If your dream is to experience Route 66 on the back of a Harley Davidson motorbike you can make it a reality with Bon Voyage (www.bon-voyage.co.uk), which has put together a 14 night guided motorcycle tour of the whole of the original route. The original 1926 Route 66 hasn’t been in existence since much of it was replaced by the Interstate Highway System. Parts of the route are still intact. The portions that pass through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been designated a national scenic byway called Historic Route 66.

PC the London Polo Club is only eight miles from Hyde Park Corner, situated in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is very proud to be the last surviving London polo club out of the 12 or so that existed in London’s Greater Metropolitan area earlier this century. HPC London Polo is also one of the oldest clubs in the UK. Founded in 1926, it is proud to be an all-welcoming, friendly, family (children and dogs) polo club. The club’s facilities include three polo fields (two boarded), a stick and ball field, an exercise track, livery service, coaching and a clubhouse for the members with a restaurant and bar. Polo is played at the Club between May and September. There are around 125 playing members at Ham and several hundred social members. Situated next to the National Trust’s Jacobean Manor Ham House and nestled beside the River Thames the Club has 23 acres of tranquil setting – quite hard to believe it’s only a short and easy drive/tube ride from the hustle and bustle of central London. The restaurant and bar area overlooks the polo fields and the food that is served is amazing, the drinks are very reasonable and they have a good range and extensive list from which to choose. If you prefer to picnic you can bring your picnic basket and set up opposite the clubhouse, the views are amazing whichever side of the field you’re on to watch the polo. HPC London Polo states that anyone, rider or non-rider, can learn to play polo, providing they have an eye for the ball and possibly hand eye coordination! Polo matches occur most Sundays starting in May for people who would enjoy watching. We were very honoured to meet the Chairman of HPC and, in fact, President of FIP (Federation of International Polo) Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers Esq. Nick, as he’s fondly known, gave us lots of information on the history of the HPC and the surrounding area. He is very proud of the fact that polo can be, and should be, for everyone, so his vision for the future is to drive the club to greater heights while still maintaining its friendly professionalism. We all thoroughly enjoyed a relaxed day at the historic HPC London Polo Club. It’s a great way to spend a sunny afternoon having lunch and watching the beautiful polo ponies and skilful riders playing this wonderful game.

Mark Petchey By Karen Rolfe
56 the riverside journals
Leading activity holiday specialists Neilson Holidays have announced Mark Petchey, the former GB tennis player , as their tennis ambassador and consultant for the next two years launching a new tennis programme for the company in all their beachclubs. We were delighted that Mark took some time out from his busy schedule to talk to us about this exciting venture. This is how the conversation went:
What do you think sets Neilson Holidays apart from other activity holiday companies regarding the tennis coaching and facilities? One of the reason’s I chose to work with Neilson Holidays was that they already had a great tennis programme. They’ve got years of experience about what guests want on the court and have come up with a great model. It’s all about doing as much, or as little, as you like. It is a holiday after all. But by making the coaching sessions engaging, offering a range or coaching options and by adding a social element, the guests get really into it and many do more than they expect! They have courts at all of their beachclubs, except cosmos in Greece, so you can get involved wherever you chose to go. What do you see as the main challenges for you being an ambassador and consultant for them as well as coaching and playing tennis with their guests? When I first started, the main challenge was to make sure that the programme was delivered uniformly across all the Neilson beachclubs. We want the guests to know that wherever they chose for their holiday, the coaching will be of the same standard. That’s why I spent two days training all the Neilson head coaches ready for the start of the season. We want to make Neilson beachclubs the go-to place for tennis holidays, whilst keeping the holiday spirit alive. We need to keep that balance. I can’t wait to get on the court and start playing with guests myself. I love to coach! How do you feel about working with the 20 or so other Neilson coaches? Have you met any of them yet? As I said, we ran a two-day training event for all the Neilson head coaches. They’re a fantastic group and it was great for me to meet and work with them. Over the two days, we made some helpful decisions to fine-tune the programme at our beachclubs and I shared my top tips on how to teach new skills and increase guests’ confidence. I have full confidence that we’re all on the same page and that they will be able to strike the right balance between helping guests to improve and remembering they’re on holiday so want to have a good time! Is there any particular part of these roles that you are looking forward to most? Simple answer. Getting on court at the beachclubs. Cant wait! The holidays seem to encourage everyone from beginners to competent tennis players. Do you have any specific ideas which you hope they will incorporate into their programmes? The concept for the programme is that everyone leaves their holiday a more confident player, whatever their ability. We do this by making sure that guests are coached with players of the same level. As well as providing a range of coaching and practice options so that people can do as much, or as little, as they like. If you’re a beginner, you’ll work to improve a particular shot (or shots) on your tennis holiday e.g forehand/serve. If you’re a more advanced player, you’ll leave your holiday with a better understanding of strategy whilst still improving your shots where necessary. On a personal level what has been the highlight of your career? I think my wins over Michael Stich and Chang when they were both ranked two in the world and when I beat Muster in Davis Cup were highlights for me. I enjoyed playing Becker at Wimbledon in the third round despite being beaten comfortably!! Assuming your daughters play tennis, do they allow you to coach them? My daughters are 17 and 14 and yes they still allow me to coach them. I have learnt an incredible amount working with them too. It has really opened my eyes to how hard it is to bring young kids up and develop their games. It can be intense on the court at times as you’re trying to help them do something they love and be the best they can be. It’s been great fun too. Most importantly, we have always managed to leave the intensity at the club and never bring it home. I think I have a great relationship with them both but maybe you should ask them what they think!!

After the success of the British Davis Cup team winning, what do you think Andy Murray has to do to win Wimbledon this year? Andy is currently playing some of the best tennis I have ever seen him play so I don’t think he needs to do too much different. He is serving great and has made a few changes which have been very beneficial. If he can continue to do that at Wimbledon with his returning game then he can win it again for sure.

Discover the real Dubai and you won’t be disappointed…
I
Yasemen Kaner-White
’ve been to Dubai a fair few times, and whilst yes, it is glitzy and glam, remnants of the tiny fishing and pearling village, first settled by 800 of the Bani Yas tribe in 1833 still remain. It was when oil was discovered in the 50s that the gilded Dubai, as we now know it, began to come to fruition. If, like me, you appreciate both rich trappings and tradition, learning the origin but indulging in opulence, Dubai has it all. Equally equipped for partying singles, friends, couples and families, there are a host of activities, delicious dishes and sights to satisfy your senses. Here’s my guide to the best…
Where to stay – Reasonably priced XVA Art Hotel found within the famed arty area of Bastikiya, means you’re in the heart of old Dubai, and one of the best contemporary art galleries to boot. The café serves fantastic fresh food – for a treat I recommend Mona’s lemon pound cake. Ibis World Trade Centre on the renowned Sheikh Zayed road is your best bet for budget with location. To indulge, stay at Burj Al Arab Jumeirah – Dubai’s tallest building and most famous hotel, or feel like royalty with a stay at the One & Only Royal Mirage, conveniently on Jumeirah Beach and close to the Mall of the Emirates. For something different but still luxurious, I’m a fan of Al Maha Resort – soak up the desert atmosphere with a backdrop of sumptuous sand dunes, you can’t help but fall in love with the romance of it. What to see – Learn the story of Dubai in a sensory succinct way, go to Dubai museum and watch the video guiding you through the ages. Dubai is vastly multicultural and reflected in the quirky Global Village, taste your way around global stalls found within this must-see attraction. Get in touch with your inner creative and meander around the cultural quarter of Bastikiya, hosting dozens of open artist studios. Live like a Bedouin, if only for an evening – smoke sheisha and ride a camel in the sand dunes, or opt for a fast and furious 4x4 ride. Cool down and get wet in the Wild Wadi Water Park or recently opened Nikki Beach. When in Arabia… something ‘horsey’ is a must- watch, a game of polo at Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. This year, new attractions include a Safari Park and the world’s largest ferris wheel.

What to eat – dine in the dunes at Al Maha Resort, make sure you eat their scrumptious Umm Ali pud. Don’t forego a visit to Al Fanaar, fascinating hybrid of a museum and typical Emirati cuisine, try their hearty harees dish – a wheaty-meaty ‘porridge’. Don’t leave Dubai without eating a Khameer; Bedouin flatbreads, Mama Tani is a specialist. Camel milk is common, try variations from chocolate to a popular ‘Camelcino’ at The Majlis Dubai. Dubai is synonymous with Friday boozy brunches often ending in a party; Al Qasr, Bubbalicious and The Ivy are at the top. Lastly, wash it all down with the drink that originated in England, now a local staple – Vimto!
Let the rays of sun touch you, as you ‘lay bare’ in your swimwear Yasemen Kaner-White
S
wimwear has come a long way since the ancient Romans and Greeks sported bandeau’esqe tops with briefs in bathhouses. Throughout the ages, swimwear has become scantier for sure, with the first official bikini coming on the scene in 1946 designed by Louis Réard and the introduction of the string-like-cover-up thongs – where only the brave need apply, in 1974. Nowadays of course, variety is key, from sexy to sporty to plus size.
So what styles are out there and how do you choose? Quirky Cutouts And The Monokini… Show-stopping swimsuits with flattering cutaways add fun to your swimwear wardrobe. The cutouts are placed to perfectly accentuate your curves and offer a flattering shape. Elongated plunge lines, keyhole, waist and back slashes ensure you look beautiful on the beach. L’Agent By Agent Provocateur, Basta Surf, Lispy and Mara Hoffman have great ranges to choose from. The Tummy Covering Tankini A perfect solution if you want the coverage that a one-piece provides but if you’re happy to reveal a little more skin, allowing for a flash of midriff. Whilst they are not the best bet for a tanned tummy, they will stay put whilst you swim and have fun in the water. Very. co.uk and Figleaves.com offer some of the best. Sexy Push Ups, High Legs And Thin Thongs For those who are uber confident strutting their stuff, seductive swimwear is what’s needed. Almost a cross between lingerie and swimwear, head to Minimale Animale, Victoria’s Secret and Amiclubwear Relax And Be Retro From cherry patterns, polka dots to high waists, boy leg and ruched one-pieces, retro ensures fun in the sun. The Vintage range from Boden works a treat, as does UniqueVintage.com Sporty Swimwear For The Speedy Not Sluggish From surfing where you can opt for swish new brands such as Abysse or Perfect Moment, to girl ‘trunks’ from Thorsun, making transitions from swimming to beach sports a breeze. The Home Run Bikini from P.E is a must for any active beach bum. Sweaty Betty offer one-piece wonders for the competitive swimmers out there.
Personally, when it is sunny, all I care about is an even tan, and above all no strap lines! thus I prefer bandeau type tops and I’m in love with the scalloped versions from Marysia Swim. As with any attire, the answer is to wear what you feel comfortable and attractive in, intuition will lead the way…

Embrace the great outdoors this summer Rakhi Shingadia, Community Sports Manager at Better Leisure, offers her expert advice on the best ways to enjoy open air exercise this summer. Nothing beats the feeling of exercising outdoors on a sunny summer’s day. The physical and mental benefits of training in a natural environment are now well documented. In fact researchers writing in the Journal of Environmental Science and Technology found that exercising in the open air makes people feel more revitalised, more energetic and offers an effective way to reduce tension, anger and depression.
Pick up a racket Tennis is the ideal summer sport and is suitable for virtually everyone, regardless of experience or fitness levels. Playing tennis elevates your heart rate, improving your circulatory health, lowering your risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Even better, the average person will burn around 220 calories in just 30 minutes when playing a singles match. And, because tennis is played with a partner it adds a social element to exercise, making it a great way to establish and maintain friendships. Your co-ordination is also likely to improve as you improve your tennis game. Benefits include better balance, speed, flexibility and physical accuracy. The White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre in Abingdon is one of the region’s leading tennis centres offering the opportunity to play casually or competitively, providing coaching for beginners through to county level players.
Take the plunge While outdoor swimming isn’t always for the faint-hearted in this country, the Thames corridor boasts a number of heated outdoor pools, which really come into their own during the summer months. Abbey Meadows Outdoor Pool offers great family fun, with an outdoor pool, splash park and spray fountains. While for a more sedate experience try Woodstock’s retro 1970s lido, which is heated to a balmy 29 degrees. Swimming outdoors regularly leads to a strengthened immune system. And while swimming itself is a great form of exercise, swimming in cold water is even better as your body burns extra calories to keep warm. Studies have shown that the long-term health benefits of regular outdoor swims include reduced blood pressure and cholesterol, reduced fat disposition and inhibited blood clotting.
With brighter, warmer, longer days summer is the ideal time to join a running group. If slogging it out on the treadmill isn’t for you, then give the joys of running in company a try. By joining one of the numerous running groups based at Better leisure centres across the region and surrounding yourself with experienced and enthusiastic runners, you’re much more likely to exercise regularly, rather than depending solely on your own motivation. Being part of a group will also encourage new friendships with likeminded people who share your passion and who will inspire you to keep training.

Signs of Burnout Signs of burnout are often very similar to signs of depression. You may experience: Inability to focus, concentrate or make decisions A feeling that there are no good days anymore Feeling mentally and emotionally numb and disengaged Difficulty in maintaining relationships Isolation and withdrawal Chronic physical and mental exhaustion Feelings of being empty and having no motivation to make the necessary changes in life These symptoms are pervasive and result in a change in your ability to cope, to enjoy life, and to address even small issues that arise.
•• •• •• •
The Solution to Burnout Through counselling and support burnout can be reversed and people can learn to develop a resiliency to burnout in the future. Talking out their situation and developing effective coping mechanisms, which may include setting boundaries and learning how to say “no” to increasing demands on your time are often key elements in treatment. Other very helpful coping strategies to treat burnout include changing lifestyles to include exercise, sleep and healthy eating combined with a priority on “me time” to rejuvenate the mind. Stress management and learning to focus on yourself and recognise early signs of burnout will also be key elements in treatment and in becoming more aware for the future. www.philippejacquet.co.uk 020 7206 2438
Life can be overwhelming… too much to do, too little time. My three steps help you to prioritise what’s important and reduce the feeling of overwhelm.
1. Ask yourself – does this job really need doing? What are the benefits of doing it? Could I delegate this to someone else? When you have worked out if it really is something you need to do, challenge yourself to make even the most mundane and boring job as interesting and fulfilling as possible by keeping in mind the reasons you identified for doing it in the first place. Also accept that some jobs are just tedious. So, in these cases, utilise the carrot principle and treat yourself to something special when you have done something dull, but necessary.
2. So, here’s how to get it all done. Using a journal, make a list, first prioritizing and then breaking all your jobs down into small and achievable chunks. Tick things off as you do them. Sometimes it may seem like you are making slow progress but know you are moving in the right direction. Looking back through your journal will help you see just how much you have achieved. It will also help you cope when your list is continually added to. It will give you perspective and a record of success, plus a fast track route when the same jobs come up again!
3. Know you are not alone – it may be the kindness of strangers, a professional or a good friend, but a problem shared is a problem halved, so talk to someone. You may be surprised just how much of relief it will give you, knowing you are not alone in feeling the way you do. Problems can be isolating, but brainstorming solutions brings people together. Change begins by thinking, and then acting differently. Sometimes we can make those changes on our own; sometimes we need support to make change happen. Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, is available by appointment for private consultations and motivational meetings.

nyone can experience a psychological condition known as burnout. This is most commonly associated with chronic types of fear and worry in life when people begin to feel helpless, hopeless and overwhelmed, usually because of situations that are out of their control. Think of burnout as the mind’s reaction to continual mental exhaustion. Just as the muscles of the body get tired and stop working with intense or ongoing repetitive exercises, so can the mind become exhausted by constant worry and stress. Whilst we can relax the muscles and change our physical activity, is it much more challenging to stop thinking about stressful situations or to fully rest the mind. Burnout is not just boredom, temporary stress, or sudden changes in life. It occurs over a long period of time when people feel trapped in a negative situation where they simply cannot see a way to make a change. This can occur because of health issues, caring for an aging or ill family member, financial pressure, relationship problems or even issues at school or on the job.

ental health problems can affect the way we think, feel and behave. They affect around one in four people in Britain, and range from common mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, to more rare problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Most people know someone who has experienced a mental health problem. They can happen to anyone, at any time. And it’s likely that, when you find a combination of self-care, treatment and support that works for you, you will get better. Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems in the UK – it’s thought that around one in 20 people will experience anxiety each year. Stephen Buckley, Head of Information at Mind, says: “The reasons for experiencing anxiety vary from person to person, but might include having low self-esteem, trying to take on lots of different responsibilities or past and childhood experiences. “Many people wait too long before seeing their GP, discounting social anxiety as just day-to-day stress. But it’s not the same as being ‘a bit shy’ and it’s important to seek help as soon as possible if you feel like your anxiety is interfering with your ability to do the things you normally would. “If you feel that you or someone you know may have anxiety it is important to speak to someone, such as your GP or friend or family member, as soon as possible so you are not alone in dealing with it and can get the right help and support.”

Tell someone If you feel that you may have anxiety, speak to a friend or a professional such as a counsellor. Exercise and eating well Exercise is good for your mind as well as your body. Regular exercise will lift your mood, help you sleep better, and give you more energy and it’s also proven to be as effective as antidepressants in treating mild to moderate depression. Make sure you get a balanced and healthy diet including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as these are proven to lift mood. Sleeping well Getting enough sleep is one of the most important contributors to good mental health and not getting enough can affect our mental wellbeing and quality of life. Online support Lots of people also find online forums helpful, particularly if they are unable to confide in friends or don’t have strong social networks. We would encourage those people to visit online peer support networks like Mind’s Elefriends website (www. elefriends.org.uk) where people can discuss their problems with others who are going through similar experiences and talk about potential solutions.

Everything you wanted to know about LIP FILLERS, but were afraid to ask. Whilst there’s no doubt that a full pout is considered sexy and desirable, a “full-time” pout is a dead giveaway for overinjections. Whether you’re worried about fine lines around the lips, dehydration or want to regain a little more volume, there’s a filler of choice that can be tailored to your needs, to create beautiful and natural-looking results. According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), 2015, ‘tweaked, not tucked’ appears to have become the new aesthetic ideal with patients seeking more subtle, understated cosmetic procedures with minimal downtime. The aim is for a more refreshed look rather than looking ‘done’.
Here are 8 steps to guide to through your lip filler journey: Ideal lip proportions: The Golden Ratio for ideal lips is 1:1.6 with the lower lip being 1.6x fuller than the upper lip. Keeping within these mathematical proportions help create beautiful and natural-looking results. Bigger is not necessarily better. Hyaluronic Acid (HA): Is the best injectable product for your lips. Being temporary, it will naturally dissipate with time. HA is a naturally occurring sugar molecule with unique water-loving properties found in the dermal layers of the skin providing moisture and hydration. Is there downtime? Treatment can take up to 15 minutes. I advise patients not to consume alcohol, or exercise on the day of treatment as this may cause unwanted bruising and swelling. Daily activities can be resumed afterwards. Are the results immediate? Yes, and continuously improve as HA gel slowly break down and bind more water over time giving smooth, plump and hydrated lips. Will they feel unnatural? When done correctly and gradually using the correct product, together with the right technique, lip fillers will feel like they belong to you. Do the injections hurt? The latest dermal fillers contain lidocaine, an anaesthetic within the product, and we use the finest needles. Topical anaesthetic cream can also be applied 30 minutes prior to treatment, all of which make treatment relatively painless. What happens to the filler eventually? The benefit of HA fillers are their reversibility. Our bodies produce an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which naturally breaks down our own HA daily. Depending on the type of HA filler used, results can last up to 1 year. Qualified practitioner: Finding a qualified practitioner is vital to ensuring a safe treatment. Knowledge of anatomy and technical delivery is crucial but most important is your actual consultation, facial assessment and mutually agreed treatment plan.

onria Dental Clinic is a friendly, long-established and modern dental practice situated in the heart of London. The dentists provide the highest standard of care in a technically advanced and relaxing environment. High quality and personal attention are the hallmarks of the practice’s philosophy. As they themselves put it: ‘At Sonria, we pride ourselves in treating people, not just teeth – never forget that on every tooth hangs a person.’ Sonria is run by Leyla Packham, a dental surgeon with more than 20 years of experience in private practice. The team is friendly, highly trained and experienced in aesthetic, restorative and preventative treatments for adults and children alike. All aspects of general and cosmetic dentistry are undertaken, including teeth whitening, dental veneers, crown and bridge work, dentures, implants and orthodontics. As the needs of everyone are different, here are some of the most common problems:
70 the riverside journals
Yellow and Stained Teeth Your teeth can become discoloured by stains on the surface or by changes inside the tooth. There are three reasons for stained teeth: Extrinsic: Popular coloured drinks and foods, such as coffee, cola, tomato sauce, and wine, can stain teeth, as does smoking. Intrinsic: With time, the inner structure of the tooth (the dentin) darkens or gets a yellow tint. You can get this type of discolouration by overexposure to fluoride during early childhood, use of some antibiotics during pregnancy, or trauma.
Age-related: Dentin naturally yellows over time. Tooth whitening is a safe and effective way of brightening the natural colour of your teeth without damaging their surface. Great results can be achieved with just one Zoom! In-surgery laser whitening appointment, or within 10 days using a Zoom! home teeth whitening kit.
Gum Disease Your mouth is full of bacteria, which, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colourless ‘plaque’ on teeth. The accumulation of this plaque, along with a sugar rich diet, can result in gum disease and dental decay. These diseases range from simple gum inflammation (gingivitis) to serious disorders. They could result in major damage to the gums and bone that support the teeth (periodontitis), which could consequently lead to tooth loss. Whether your gum disease gets worse or not depends on how well you care for your mouth. One of the biggest risk factors associated with gum disease is smoking.

Dental Decay and Erosion
Keep Teeth and Gums Healthy
Tooth decay (dental caries) is common and, with gum disease, the main cause of tooth loss. The bacteria in your mouth changes foods, especially sugar and starch, into acids, which damage the enamel of the teeth and, if left long enough, will create a cavity. While a cavity in a tooth can potentially lead to an abscess and loss of the tooth, a build up of acid can cause dental erosion. When the enamel is worn away, the dentine underneath is exposed, which may lead to pain and sensitivity issues. Teeth can become more sensitive to hot or cold drinks, and to acidic or sweet foods. Prolonged and excessive consumption of drinks and foods that contain acetic acid (found in condiments such as vinegar), carbonic acid (found in fizzy drinks), or citric acid (which occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables) affect the oral pH and demineralises tooth enamel. One way to help prevent dental erosion is to avoid consuming these products too often. However, if you do consume any of the above, or similar, wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. Once the enamel is gone, the only way to replace it is with crowns or veneers. If a tooth is lost, whether naturally or from being extracted, there are various ways to replace it – dentures, bridges and dental implants. This latter solution is probably the closest you will get to the actual tooth.
Dental Implants A dental implant is used to support one or more false teeth. It is a titanium screw that replaces the root of a tooth when it is lost. It is placed in the jawbone and will last for as long as you care for it. They are the new standard of care.

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Floss regularly. Visit the dentist routinely. Avoid smoking. Wait 30 minutes after consuming acidic drinks or food to brush your teeth.
Crooked Teeth Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that is concerned with improving the alignment of your teeth. The need for orthodontic treatment is influenced by both social and cultural factors. Sonria’s specialist, Noor Al-Mansouri, uses the latest appliances and techniques to help patients achieve their ideal smiles. Some of these include Invisalign, Six Months Smiles, Incognito lingual braces and Damon System low-friction, self-ligating braces. There are many advantages of orthodontic treatment. These include the psychosocial benefits, improved chewing and speech, and better overall dental health.
Main Reasons for Carrying Out Orthodontic Treatment Aesthetics – Orthodontic treatment can provide an attractive smile and contribute to the overall beauty and youth of the face. Dental appearance can have psychosocial benefits, which affects a person’s self esteem, and contribute to the overall quality of life. Function – If teeth do not bite properly, masticatory function can be impaired, with patients reporting difficulty in chewing. This can also have a serious effect on a person’s feeling of self-worth. In addition, crowded teeth are sometimes difficult to clean properly and harbour areas for food and bacteria to stagnate. This can cause decay and gum disease, which could eventually lead to tooth loss.

A Day in the Life of a Consultant Plastic Surgeon Cadogan Clinic

M
y name is Mr Olivier Amar and I’m an internationally trained Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Cadogan Clinic, based in Sloane Square in Chelsea. I am originally from France and come from a family of surgeons. I graduated in France before coming to the UK to work at Cadogan. I specialise in Facial Aesthetics, Fat Transfer, Liposuction and Natural Breast Augmentation. I am most renowned for the Stem Cell Rejuvenation (FAMI) technique, which my father pioneered and I have continued the research and practise of. The procedure involves extracting fat from the body which contains powerful stem cells and inserting it into areas of the body and face to help slow the ageing process down, rejuvenate scars and act as a natural filler. A lot of people have a stigma against fat in the body, but it is extremely powerful. Fat contains mesenchymal stem cells which work tirelessly to rejuvenate and fight the ageing process within. My typical day starts at 7.30am when I arrive at Cadogan Clinic on Sloane Street. I live in on the River Thames in Chelsea so I luckily don’t have a long commute. In the morning I carry out surgical treatments on my patients, I usually do one or two procedures in a morning depending on the length of each. Cadogan Clinic are the leaders in day-patient surgeries and, therefore, we do the procedures in the morning so we can continue checking on our patients throughout the rest of the day, ensuring they are ready to discharge at the end of the day. I usually finish surgery around lunchtime and then take a quick break, grabbing salad and a raw juice for lunch. After lunch, I start my consultations throughout the afternoon. As Cadogan Clinic has state-of-the-art theatres, I can easily check on my surgery patients, in between my consultations. It is really important to me that I am regularly seeing my surgery patients to make sure they are recovering well and I am able to discharge them at an appropriate time. After my consultations I usually have a meeting at Cadogan Clinic either about the new research in the industry or the organisation itself. I usually get home by 6pm. I either have a meeting to do with my research or consultancy or I go for a run along the Thames, or go swimming. I like to get a bit of exercise in every day even if it’s just for 20 minutes. I like exercising in the fresh air, particularly now it’s summer. Exercise keeps my body and mind healthy but also helps relieve pressure from the day. After exercising, I’ll come home and have some dinner, which is usually something Mediterranean, I then head to bed early, ready for the next day working at the Cadogan Clinic. Although I have a routine, every day is unique with lots of different procedures and consultations to carry out, and lots of different patients to see. I am extremely passionate about my work and continuing research in my field and I enjoy what I do every day.

ranmore School, one of Surrey’s leading prep schools, offers an unrivalled, broad-ranging academic focus that challenges young enquiring minds underpinned by strong pastoral care. The extensive 25-acre site, including a dedicated Forest School, has superb sports and music facilities providing opportunities for all. Our most recent ISI Inspection Report awarded top grades for both the main school and Bright Stars Nursery. Learning is designed to be stimulating, challenging and enjoyable; to encourage self-belief and to allow each individual child to attain the highest standard. The breadth of opportunity at Cranmore is outstanding, especially in sport and music, and all children are encouraged to develop at least one special area of interest where they can shine. The Cranmore years begin at 2½ when boys and girls enter Bright Stars, the school’s nursery, with year-round care and extended hours. Offering a welcoming yet purposeful introduction to structured school life, the outstanding team make it their business to know and nurture every child. All children then transfer into the main school. Cranmore introduced Mandarin for their 8-year-olds in addition to French; older pupils study Spanish, Latin, and Greek, too. The senior pupils also take a course in Philosophy so that they are fully rounded and prepared for senior school. Altogether there are over 20 sports available which truly means a wealth of opportunity. Triumphs are celebrated in major sports plus those not often offered at prep schools including judo, fencing and golf, plus rowing and skiing, both of which are strong with several wins both locally and nationally. Specialist subject teaching begins when pupils enter the senior department (8+). The older children also relish the benefits of the House System, part of the pastoral network reflecting Cranmore’s Catholic ethos that cares for and encourages each individual. Michael Connolly, the Headmaster, has a final word for any prospective parent, “You can be sure of a warm welcome on your visit and you will quickly come to realise why Cranmore is such a special community”.

ur national dish of Fish & Chips is now a global phenomenon, and recently regained the title of most popular takeaway food in the UK, a title that had for several years been upheld by chicken tikka masala. No longer sneered at as the national dish of that nation that knows nothing about food, it is now lauded the world over. But you don’t have to be a dietician to know that however delicious a piece of fish in batter is, it isn’t advisable to eat this dish every night. And for many years that was the one and only way a lot of us ate fish. The criticisms of our diet from overseas may not always have been unjustified, but a lot has changed in recent years. We now know much more about the food we eat, and the food available to us now, compared to then, is hugely different. And that goes for fish as much as any other food group. The better informed we are becoming can hopefully help us and our families to live longer and healthier lives. The Japanese are considered to live longer than any other nation, and fish is a major part of their diet. There are thought to be a multitude of benefits to our health from eating fish, particularly fish high is Omega-3 fatty acids (examples – salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring), from lowering blood pressure, to preventing dementia and even Alzheimer’s; there is limited evidence to suggest that they may prevent certain cancers and arthritis too. Oily fish can help lower cholesterol, and in so doing prevent heart attack, and is good for our skin and our hair, and even our eyesight. It can relieve the symptoms of diabetes, and even prevent diabetes altogether. So it’s a no brainer really that we should be eating more fish, and particularly those high in Omega-3s. If you are unfamiliar with cooking fish then don’t be put off, just give it a go. There is a lot of help and information out there. Speak to the people behind the fish counter at your supermarket or fishmonger, they are there to help. There is a ton of videos on the internet that can give you methods and tips too. Try this simple recipe – warm some extra virgin olive oil in a pan, and add a drained can of butter beans, break the beans up with a fork in the oil until crushed and warm through, then stir in the zest of a lemon and a few torn basil leaves and salt and pepper. In a frying pan add a drizzle of oil and pan fry a smoked mackerel fillet for a few minutes on each side, then serve on top of the crushed butter beans.

Lorraine Angliss Owner of Annie’s restaurants in Chiswick and Barnes, and Rock & Rose restaurant, Richmond
How long have you been in business,Lorraine? I have been in business for 30 years now. What motivated you to start this business? It’s a love of all things really, food, drink, looking after people and most importantly, having fun. Can you give a short description of your business? Rock & Rose is an eclectic, glamorous, special award-winning restaurant and cocktail bar. It’s a place where you can have a romantic meal for two or a fun get-together with friends. Annie’s is your home from home, a charming and lovely restaurant serving traditional British dishes with an Annie’s twist; breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. What are you best known for and why? (Special service you offer?) Being around for a long time. The average shelf life for a restaurant is small but we seem to have conquered the test of time and we hope to have achieved institution status! I also add the feminine touch to a male dominated industry. What sets your business aside from others in the field/area? The bespoke way I design, aimed at a wide range of people, my businesses feel loved and cared for which is really important to me. Why should a customer choose your business? That’s a difficult question, as there is so much choice out there now which is so good and varied. I’d still recommend my own, of course, there’s still something quite lovely about dining at an independent. It still carries all the character that is often lost and the ability to change menus and cocktails easily is also a great reason to keep going back to see what’s new! Do you have a lot of repeat business? What keeps customers coming back? Yes we do! And I’m so grateful to my loyal customers that use us on a regular basis. I’d say it’s consistency of our food and service. We’re friendly and always go out of our way to please.
What plans do you have for the future? Always looking to find and create something new.

Set amidst 33 acres of stunning riverside grounds, The Oakley Court offers fine dining, Afternoon Tea and al fresco dining menus which are sure to impress. The introduction of the family friendly restaurant ‘The Scullery’ and the award winning fine dining restaurant ‘The Dining Room’ have ensured all tastes are catered for with excellent food and service. The Dining Room specifically caters for fine dining, offering a seven-course tasting menu and matching wine flight served by their expert wine sommelier, which showcases the very best dishes Head Chef Damian Broom and his team create using the ingredients grown in the hotel’s Kitchen Gardens. Individual service from the professional waiting team only adds to the overall experience provided to guests, one of which is designed to offer the opportunity to not only taste incredible, inventive dishes, but to embrace the gastronomic journey. Since joining the hotel in 2014, Damian has dramatically enhanced the food that we offer. His visionary approach to using home grown, seasonal produce has ensured simple but creative dishes focused on providing a ‘gastronomic experience’ to customers. With his dedicated team, Damian has sought to change the approach to creating dishes, teaching his team to be actively involved in the ‘soil to plate’ journey and encouraging them to not just see the obvious, but utilise their ingredients to provide the ultimate variety and creativity in a progressive, exciting menu. Damian’s dedication to using only the freshest produce has seen him introduce the Kitchen Garden, which is run by his team of chefs and focuses on growing seasonal produce which he states ‘dictates the menu’. The gardens are accessible to all guests, offering the opportunity for them to embrace the ‘soil to plate’ ethos by seeing first-hand where ingredients are grown and their journey right through to the dishes which make up the weekly menus. With their own on-site honey bees producing homemade honey, and a smokehouse where the chefs cure locally sourced meats, Damian’s desire to provide the very best produce is testament to his passion for the industry and the dishes he creates. Recently awarded both ‘Restaurant and Chef of the year’ at the Berkshire & Buckinghamshire Food & Drink Awards 2015, The Oakley Court has rightly established itself as one of the home counties’ finest culinary experiences and one not to be missed. The Black Swan Hotel Helmsley North Yorks
he Black Swan – something extremely rare, and I have to agree after spending two nights at The Black Swan, Helmsley, North Yorks. It was certainly a pleasant rare experience from the beautiful drive, through some of the most wonderful countryside Britain has to offer, I arrived at The Black Swan to receive the warmest of Yorkshire welcomes from the staff. The first thing I would like to say about this establishment is that my very faithful four-legged friend was made as welcome as I was. After checking out my room with its lovely window seat looking out onto Market Place, its comfy bed, iron, hairdryer and all the usual things you would expect from a luxury hotel (and with a few added extras you wouldn’t expect like dog bowl, blanket and doggie treats) I went off to explore the restaurant whilst the receptionists looked after Ruby (the dog). The Gallery Restaurant exhibits some fabulous works of art from local artists which are all available to buy. The staff were very attentive and I soon had a lovely cold glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in my hand while I decided whether to order à la carte or choose the six-course tasting menu – I went for à la carte and decided to try the tasting menu the following evening when my colleague would join me. I was hungry but should probably have only had two courses, however everything prepared by Chef Alan O’Kane and his team was so delicious I couldn’t help myself. The torched salmon preceded the red deer with Hereford snails, chervil root and wild mushroom beautifully and with just enough digestion time before the lemon and olive oil cake, pickled fennel, baked white chocolate with yoghurt sorbet. The Black Swan has an array of awards and accolades for their cuisine and services and after my short stay I can certainly see why. A comfortable night’s sleep and an early morning stroll round one of the many walks nearby then it was back to the hotel for a well deserved breakfast. So that I could have breakfast with Ruby (my four-legged friend) I asked to eat in one of the many superbly decorated lounge areas. I think I counted five on the ground floor which made them all wheelchair friendly too. The haddock and poached egg was cooked perfectly and when the waitress asked if Ruby would like some sausage I couldn’t help but look surprised. Yes, please! So she brought her a foil tray with it all sliced and cool enough to eat. A must-try experience when in the area, so I had heard, and as such booking is preferable, is the Afternoon Tea served at The Black Swan. My colleague had arrived by this time and so together we headed to the Tearoom which is adjacent to the hotel and is decorated in an old tearoom fashion. We were in luck and got a window seat so we could still see what was happening in the market square. The tiered plates displayed delicate sandwiches, homemade scones, homemade jam and clotted cream, and delightful pastries which were all washed down with some Darjeeling tea. I definitely needed to walk round the nearby castle and roam around the beautiful gardens and the local shops before even thinking about evening dinner. After a leisurely shop, Ruby got a new bowl and I got a new outfit – it’s only fair, having taken a lovely walk to the outskirts of Helmsley it was back to the hotel to get ready for our six-course tasting menu experience. My colleague went for the vegetarian option so between us we had the pleasure of both menus. Each course was served with expertise and precise care to every detail from the ham knuckle and foie gras, celeriac rémoulade, caper jam, pease pudding with quail egg to the buffalo ricotta cheesecake, calamansi, passion fruit curd with pistachio and every dish in between. If it’s locally sourced ingredients mixed into sublime flavours and served as fine dining you’re looking for then look no further. here are few better automotive experiences than heading out on a glorious summer’s day in a car with the roof down, and doing so in a luxury or supercar only enhances the experience further. Visitors to London can experience hassle-free and convenient access to the convertible supercar lifestyle this summer thanks to H.R. Owen Luxury Hire – the best hire fleet in the country. The UK’s largest luxury dealer group continues to expand its hire fleet, which now includes the Aston Martin Vantage V8 Roadster S, so customers can sample life with one of the most desirable British convertibles. The 436bhp Vantage V8 Roadster S is capable of 0-60mph in just 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 190mph. It offers the stunning looks that Aston Martin is famed for, with a roof that can be raised or lowered electronically in just 22 seconds for quick and easy access to the glorious sound of the engine. Keep the roof in place, though, and the cabin is quiet and relaxed. If you fancy something with even more power and a couple more seats, then the sporty Bentley Continental GTC is also available through H.R. Owen Luxury Hire. The Bentley’s 6.0-litre W12 twin-turbocharged engine boasts a huge 582bhp and gets from 0-60mph in just 4.4sec, making this a genuine performance car. This is by no means a no-frills car, though, as the Continental GTC offers all that is great about Bentley, which means a sumptuous interior with the finest leathers, metals and other materials. The boot has plenty of room for luggage for a longer trip away. There are plenty of options if you fancy a short summer holiday with one of these two, or any of the other cars on the H.R. Owen Luxury Hire fleet, with hire periods ranging from a day to a week or longer. The Aston Martin Vantage V8 Roadster S is available for £650 a day, while a weekend (Friday 12pm to Monday at 12pm) costs £1950. Planning a longer trip? A week will set you back £3950. The Bentley is available for the same periods, with a day costing £850, a weekend £2950 and a week priced at £5950. The H.R. Owen Luxury Hire offering is not limited to convertibles, though, with the four-door, four-seat, four-wheel drive Ferrari FF another new addition to the fleet. It joins the likes of the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte, the Lamborghini Huracán and the Rolls-Royce Wraith – all the very latest models, and fresh from the showroom. The cars can even be personalised, even down to wrapping them in the customer’s favourite colour, and can be delivered to your home, or collected from H.R. Owen’s Mayfair headquarters. For those that want to spend the whole summer, and beyond, in a high-performance, luxury convertible of their own, then H.R. Owen has an array of options from Italy and Britain. As well as the Aston Martin Vantage V8 Roadster, and the Bentley Continental GTC, the Rolls-Royce Dawn offers a supreme level of personalised luxury. It is a four-seater with generous levels of space for rear passengers, and offers a whisper-quiet driving experience thanks to its six-layer fabric roof that keeps all unwanted noise outside the cabin. Despite this, it offers a fantastic level of performance, with the 6.6-litre V12 engine capable of 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds. For those that prefer their convertibles with more in the way of aural drama, then two of the newest cars to appear at H.R. Owen – the Ferrari 488 Spider and Lamborghini Huracán Spyder – offer that and much more. The 488 Spider is the most powerful mid-engine convertible that Ferrari has ever made, with a turbocharged 660bhp V8 engine. It comes with a folding hard top, which drops in just 14 seconds. The 488 Spider is blisteringly fast, too, with 0-62mph coming in just 3.0sec. The Lamborghini Huracán Spyder is no slouch either, with its 5.2-litre V10 engine managing 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds. It is more than fast, though, and it provides a glorious soundtrack to accompany you wherever you go.

arlow Tyrie is the world’s oldest manufacturer of teak garden furniture, and we’re very happy to be exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show again this year. This will be our ninth year at the show, and it’s always a highlight of our calendar. Of course, this year marks the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth, and is bound to be a particularly special one for all at Chelsea – exhibitors and visitors alike. At Barlow Tyrie, we passed our 90th a few years back, and we’re looking forward to celebrating our centenary in 2020. In the meantime, we’re concentrating on developing new products, hoping to add to our 18 awards for design excellence. We have our own award-winning design team, led by Mark Tyrie, but we also like to work with independent designers. Currently we produce five major ranges designed by internationally-respected designers; each very different in style and approach, but each bringing valuable variation to our catalogue. Back to this year though, and another highlight for us was to have been chosen by the Royal Academy to complement their exhibition ‘Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse’. This has been a hugely successful exhibition, running from January to April at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and attracting almost 400,000 visitors. Those of you who had the chance to visit will have noticed that many of the individual ‘rooms’ making up the gallery space also contained teak garden furniture. This was an assortment of Barlow Tyrie Glenham teak seats and armchairs, and Balmoral teak tables – 29 pieces in all, and was designed to give visitors the opportunity to sit and reflect on the paintings as if in a real garden setting. But we’re not all about teak, lovely though it is. We also manufacture outdoor furniture in stainless steel, powder-coated aluminium, and hand-woven synthetic fibre. And our ranges often feature a combination of materials; chairs with a stainless steel frame and teak seat and back, for example, or tables with a powdercoated aluminium frame and a teak top; a ceramic tabletop on an aluminium frame, or cord on our teak Monterey chairs. Whichever materials we use, we make sure to source the best available, and to combine ergonomic design with manufacturing expertise. Our aim is to make outdoor living as comfortable as it is stylish. In fact, to make sure that everything in the garden . . .
. . . is lovely! 91 the riverside journals

ow the weather’s finally getting warmer, and you can spend more time outside, thoughts always turn to making sure that the garden furniture, patio areas and pots are all looking good for the summer. Hard surfaces will always benefit from a good spring clean with the help of a pressure washer as, depending on the aspect, a thin layer of dirt and algae will have accumulated over the winter. Even dirty hardwood furniture will come up looking like new after a blast from the pressure washer! Pots may need a scrub too, before planting up for the summer. So you may be reading this thinking that your paving needs more than a spring clean, and that it’s actually time to replace your existing patio, or install a brand new one somewhere, so where do you start? The main considerations are choosing the right site within your garden and selecting the most suitable materials for construction. As far as the site is concerned I always like to incorporate more than one sitting area into a garden if space permits, usually somewhere to catch the early morning sun, and hopefully sometimes have breakfast, and another area that would be designed for evening use – this would be your ‘outdoor dining room’. Why not consider having a ‘secret’ sitting area, secluded behind screens, trellis or tall plantings? This is a really good option if your garden is overlooked by neighbouring properties, and although it’s nice to get a blast of warm morning or evening sunshine it’s also good to have somewhere to relax in dappled shade too. Your outdoor dining room will be best if it’s not too far from the kitchen, but if it is consider using a nearby existing outbuilding to fit out with a mini kitchen. Lighting is important too, so that you can relax even after the sun goes down, and your choice of light fittings can suit the style that you wish to create, whether it’s formal, relaxed or contemporary. Most important though is to give yourself enough space; you should be able to walk around the outdoor furniture without tripping over pots or stepping onto garden areas, and great consideration should be given to steps and any changes in levels. The choice of your hard landscaping materials should reflect the style that you have chosen for your garden, consider the architecture and period of your house when making your decision too. It’s also worth looking at local materials, particularly if your house is constructed from the same type of stone, however, you will usually find that most real stone products available are imported from around the globe, but the advantage with this is that the price of real stone has come down considerably. Try to visit a specialist paving centre where you can see displays of products laid as patios, and then arrange to take samples home to make your final selection. An integral part of a well designed garden is having the right balance of different surfaces. Most gardens will comprise an arrangement of lawn, gravel and hard surfaces such as paving or decking, so always consider the whole garden when planning a new area, maybe repeating a material already used elsewhere to give continuity. After furniture, all hard landscaped areas benefit greatly from some well-positioned pots. Pots and other containers provide an opportunity for seasonal colour and interest, and may be used as focal points or to frame a view, or flank an entrance. Very large pots or urns are usually best left unplanted, the pot itself is the star and is being used as a sculptural element. The choice of pots or containers is very much about personal preference, but really they should follow the same style as your outdoor area. Painted wooden planters, often referred to as ‘Versailles Planters’, are quite smart and formal, whilst terracotta pots may be used formally or informally. I would always recommend that pots in one area should all match each other, and if planted the plantings should match too. Always buy good quality, frostproof pots; they may be more expensive to start but will outlast cheaper alternatives by years, if not decades! The larger the individual pot the better too, it’s best to have fewer, larger pots than a cluster of smaller ones. Large pots make more of a statement in their own right, and provide a greater volume of soil for plants to grow in, thus giving a better floral display as well. Planting possibilities for pots are endless, from traditional summer favourite mixtures of Pelargoniums (‘Geraniums’), Fuchsias and Petunias to more formal alternatives. If you are opting for a summer floral display try limiting the amount of plant varieties and repeat the same mixture in each pot, this gives a much stronger impact. Also consider a colour scheme such as all white flowers, or just plant for foliage effect. The Peppermint Geranium, Pelargonium tomentosum, is a favourite choice of mine for this type of planting. For a more formal look with permanent plantings use clipped box, or in mild areas, clipped bay. Camellias also look good and will give you winter or spring flowers depending on the variety, surprisingly they respond well to a light clipping with secateurs after flowering. Other less formal permanent plantings include evergreen grasses, Lavenders and Phormiums, again just choosing one variety and making an impact by repeating it in every pot. So now’s the time to cast a critical eye over your outdoor rooms, and do any spring cleaning or refurbishments as required, so you can sit back and relax this summer.

Outdoor lighting can help create a magical space and bring your garden, balcony or patio to life. Make the most of long summer evenings and transform your garden or balcony into a glowing living space you can use after dark.
Outdoor lighting can be used in so many ways; to illuminate a pathway, to create a dramatic effect on a wall, to add romance to an al fresco dinner or to liven up a party atmosphere.
Getting the perfect outdoor atmosphere doesn’t have to come at a huge price. There are so many different lighting types available from fixed electric lamps and movable, battery powered lanterns to DIY lighting. The sky is the limit to getting the perfect outdoor living atmosphere.
Landscaping and architecture You can highlight the beautiful architecture of your home’s exterior or landscaping with strategically placed outdoor lighting. While you might get caught up in the look of the lighting you want, make sure you consider what type of bulb you are after. Solar lights are becoming very popular. They are eco-friendly and can reduce the cost of keeping your outdoors lit up. LED lights are also on the most popular list, and although may cost more upfront, they provide quality lighting and last longer than other bulbs. Wall lighting is the perfect way to frame your front door or an area in your garden that you want to stand out, like a fountain or outdoor dining area. Don’t forget to light up your way with some smart spotlights installed along your pathway. For a less permanent option, use lanterns that can be removed and repositioned if need be. If you want to highlight a flower bed, rope lighting creates a great uplighting effect when placed on the back of the flower bed edging. Tree trunks can be a focal point by facing a spotlight from the ground up, towards the middle of the trunk. It will accentuate the texture of the trunk and create a pretty glow.
Garden lighting For some DIY lighting, you can easily hang some mason jars on shepherd’s hooks, with an LED light inside, and place these around your garden. If you want to illuminate a wooden division wall or fence, hammer nails into it and hang different coloured mason jars at different heights on the fence. Strings of lights hanging in trees or lanterns placed on the ground are great options if you only want the lights around for the summer or for an al fresco dinner party. Try something different with glow-in-the-dark pots, they act as plant holders and lights, and will be a great talking point when you have guests over!
Party atmosphere Colourful lanterns and strings of naked bulbs are always great for bringing a party atmosphere to your outdoor space. Lighting can add so much to creating the theme you are going for. If in doubt, a few fairy lights and white paper lanterns are always a safe bet for any party. For something unique and different, get some battery operated LED carnival themed lights, spelling out a word or a symbol, to add character to a party theme. If you are on a tight budget, get some plastic bottles, fill them with water and pop different coloured glow sticks inside to create instant party lighting that doesn’t break the bank!
Balcony illumination
Winter wonderland And who says lighting can only be magical in the summer? A garden covered in snow with a combination of tall street lamp style lights and shorter lanterns can look like a magical winter wonderland, a perfect white backdrop to your Christmas dinner.
99 the riverside journals
If you don’t have a garden, you can still get a great lighting effect on your balcony. Solar or battery powered lights are the best option for any balcony, they are easy to move around and there is no need for electrical leads or complicated wiring systems. Go for drama by hanging lanterns together at different heights to create a chandelier effect, or drape fairy lights over a wall or railing to create a pretty curtain of light. If your balcony is covered, why not opt for using candlelight instead. You can use candles in lanterns, put them in large vases or just in simple candle holders to create a relaxed and romantically lit space. Be sure to use candles only where there is no chance that they could be overturned and create a fire hazard. If you are unsure, why not try LED candles that give a flickering effect.

Turn Up the Summer Heat Go pro with gas
Summer is all about yummy cocktails, tanning and beautiful, homemade al fresco dining. Pulling out the barbecue has become something of a Bank Holiday tradition (weather permitting). If there is one thing that describes summer, it’s a back garden barbecue with the family. Barbecuing is an art in itself (if you do it properly), and there are many options out there when choosing your perfect grill. From the top of the range gas powered cooking machines to the humble charcoal grill and even a quick, last minute decision disposable barbecue, here is your guide to choosing the grill that suits your al fresco cooking needs.
From simple models to ones with dozens of dials, gauges and settings, gas barbecues are easy to use and the easiest in terms of post cookout cleaning.
q LG Outdoor Grillstream Island BBQ – £799 from John Lewis. King of the barbecues, this one is sure to impress your dinner guests. It comes with a rotisserie system so you can even make a spit roast dinner. It also comes with handy shelves and cabinet space so you can keep utensils and sauces close to hand.
w Klasen Gas Barbecue with Side Burner – £395 from Ikea.
w
Never have to rush back inside for serving plates while the sausages burn again. This barbecue has tons of extra storage and workspace so you can prepare your salads, meats and serve your guests all from the same space.
q
Keep it classic with charcoal There is nothing quite like lighting your own fire and allowing the smoke to flavour your meat and vegetables. The incredible smell that wafts through the air is also pretty great! Bar- B-Kettle® Charcoal BBQ – £133.92 from e Weber® homebase.co.uk. When you think of a barbecue brand, Weber comes to mind. It has been the classic family barbecue brand for over 50 years and is still a favourite. Big enough to cook for all your guests, the grill comes with an ash tray to make tidying a breeze.
r e r
Big Green Egg BBQ – £1,280 from John Lewis. One of the barbecue big players, Big Green Egg combines age old knowhow and unique design to offer strength, durability and heat insulation that makes for perfectly grilled meat. The ceramic shell doesn’t get as hot as most barbecues, meaning it’s safer to use (especially if you have children around).
On the move with portable barbecues If you are limited on garden or balcony space but still love to barbecue, a portable grill may be your best friend.
t Landmann Piccolino Portable Charcoal BBQ – £34.99 from homebase.co.uk. This nifty little barbecue is a must-have for out and about cooking. It comes in a variety of colours and includes tongs and a warming rack; all you need for a barbecue at the park.
y Gentlemen’s Hardware Portable Suitcase BBQ – £55 from y
u
John Lewis. A neat idea that will see you grilling up a feast wherever you may roam. This mini suitcase-style portable barbecue is lightweight; ideal for camping or festivals. It has the words “The Adventure Begins” printed on it and comes in a vintage design box as a fun addition.
Disposable grill for last minute cookouts Sometimes an impromptu fry-up is called for when the sun unexpectedly starts to shine on a Sunday afternoon. If you don’t own a barbecue of your own, you can always pop into your local retailer and pick up a handy disposable version.
u Bar-Be-Quick Party Instant Disposable Charcoal BBQ – £10 from Tesco. Perfect for an unplanned barbecue in the park or at the beach, it’s big enough to cook for up to 10 people.

Silver Speaks:
‘Form’ is an exhibition of work by members of Contemporary British Silversmiths. It offers a behind the scenes look at the techniques that enable makers to create work in silver, while exploring their relationship with materials, processes and tools. It is part of Silver Speaks, the year long programme of events celebrating the exceptional level of creativity and skill in British silversmithing today. Running from 1st June until 23rd September 2016, it will take place at The Goldsmiths’ Centre in London. The exhibition will provide an insight into the processes behind the making of objects and what is used to create them. Showcasing 33 works alongside the makers’ tools, original samples and drawings. The silversmiths selected were those whose designs successfully interpreted one of the themes outlined in the brief (Strike, Construct, Enrich, Innovate and Colour) as well as simultaneously exhibiting excellence in design and craftsmanship.

Karin Paynter, Director of Silver Speaks, comments: “Form is all about celebrating the making process, demonstrating the importance of tools and materials for individual silversmiths and showcasing the breadth of craftsmanship in British silversmithing. Through the Silver Speaks programme, Contemporary British Silversmiths is putting silver on the world stage to show how beautiful pieces can be created to enhance contemporary living, architecture and fashion.”

Awarding winning multidisciplinary designer Anne Kernan worked alongside Contemporary British Silversmiths to design the show. This exhibition complements Silver Speaks’ current V&A exhibition ‘Idea to Object’, which traces how a work in silver is brought into being from the design concept through to the final piece. The 18 selected designs in this free display encompass a variety of beautiful and intriguing objects – both sculptural and functional – created using a range of different processes, from the traditional to the most cutting edge. Silver Speaks will shine the spotlight on some of the most exciting artists and designers – exploring the diverse applications of the material, from the experimental to the traditional, the sculptural to the functional. It will showcase the remarkable uses of silver and how works can be commissioned to enhance contemporary living, architecture and fashion. The programme of events has been organised by Contemporary British Silversmiths, the leading association for design-based contemporary silver, which is sponsored by the Goldsmiths’ Company. The focus of the programme, Silver Speaks: ‘Idea to Object’ and the supporting public symposium ‘Silver in Contemporary Life’, are produced in collaboration with the V&A.

ompletely self-taught and without any formal training, Echo has created artwork professionally for 37 years, garnering the attention of some the world’s top corporations, institutions and celebrities as collectors. He has collaborated with designer Paul Smith for a London Fashion Week range and has sold works to celebrities including Madonna, Elton John and Oprah Winfrey amongst others. Born in Colorado, USA, Echo is best known for creating more advertisements for ABSOLUT vodka than any other artist, having developed four 2000 square foot billboards on the iconic Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Echo has also worked relentlessly for various charities and institutions, raising nearly $850,000 from the direct sale of his work for a multitude of projects, including selling 10 paintings at the prestigious Wallace Collection in London. All of the money raised was used to rebuild an earthquake destroyed school in southern China. He also created one of SWATCH Watches’ most successful artist watches, the “Imagine Love” watch, selling more than 153,000 units and giving all his royalties to paediatric aids causes in New York state, sending over 80 children afflicted with AIDS to a healthy summer camp with full health care. Most recently, he worked in cooperation with HRH Prince Charles and The Elephant Family in London, creating a one-of-a-kind TUK TUK that was auctioned at the private residence of Prince Charles and raised £52,000 ($81,500) – all of which was dedicated to saving the Asian Elephant. In 2013-14 Alex painted a bespoke guitar by request of Eric Clapton, which was played by Eric then sold at auction, raising £20,000 ($30,000) for the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, a rehab facility founded by Mr Clapton. After years living and working in New York’s East Hampton – renowned for its creative artist community – Echo now lives in the UK where he cites the English landscape as his primary source of inspiration. This year, he is launching a new collection, named the ‘The Shape of Things’, which seeks to portray human emotions and the elemental beauty found in nature. An exhibition of works from Alex’s ‘The Shape of Things’ collection will launch at Castle Fine Art, Windsor on Saturday 25th June 2016, and will run until Sunday 3rd July.

Business Profile
Kristine Balingit A Personal Stylist with over 11 years in the Fashion Industry.
“My mission is to bring fashion and style into people’s lives and bring out the confidence in them regardless of their lifestyle. I want to inject coolness and sophistication through shape, trend, and classic pieces which will embody who they are.”
Where did you train and grow your talent as a designer/stylist? I am originally from New Zealand where I studied a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Technology. This gave me the experience to fit garments on different body shapes and tailor them to the specified client. More recently I studied at The London College of Style What motivated you to start this business? As much as I love the industry I really wanted to do something that was important to me. It was as basic as I wanted to make people happy and confident within themselves. I feel if you help someone feel good about the way they look it changes the way they perceive themselves and they are more willing to open other avenues in their life. What are you best known for and why? I guess I am best known for my creativity, determination and passion to always stand up for what you believe in! I think you can always have your cake and eat it too. Otherwise what’s the point in having cake! Does your business suit a specific age/sex group, and what inspires you to create a style for a given person? I would say that my business is for a broad market. For anyone who has ever felt like they do not know where to start when they are out shopping, anyone who would love to shop and doesn’t have the time or for someone who just wants to find themselves again. I have styled both men and women from their mid 20’s to mid 50’s. I would say it’s more about how comfortable and confident they feel in letting
me help them feel good about themselves. I always look at their story and what brought them to me. I look at their lifestyle and their goals, what makes them truly happy and then I focus on trying to bring out the best in them whether it’s by focusing on a specific look or just bringing them out of their comfort zone in an outfit that makes them feel amazing. I try and keep my prices as competitive as possible as I want my clients to see my service as getting a luxury haircut. What packages do you offer? Have you worked in other areas of the Industry? I offer a range of styling packages from a Wardrobe Edit to Personal Shopping and Holiday packages. I have worked in many Design offices as a Garment Technologist for different brands such as Reiss, Ted Baker, Hobbs and other British retailers. In my earlier years I worked as a Visual Designer for an Australian brand which I loved. How do you get the work/home balance? I have to admit I work all the time even when I am at home. I try and go to the gym regularly and see friends to keep me level headed. I don’t feel like I work to be honest because I love what I do so much that it’s hard to turn it off (this is true and not a cliché). What plans do you have for the future? Do you have plans for expansion? I would love to incorporate my own accessories and jewellery in with my styling – I think it is the perfect topping. I want to be able to style other parts of the UK and musicians. I love travel and creativity.

Surviving the Sun:
What sun cream you should use for your skin type
A
113 the riverside journals
long with typical summer activities like drinking cocktails in rooftop bars and having Saturday afternoon BBQs with the family, there is the risk of getting too much sun. Most of us just pick up the first (and admittedly cheapest) sun cream from the shelf while we do our weekly shop, without paying attention to which brand and SPF rating is best for our skin type. The paler your natural skin tone is, the more protection you need, so an SPF50 is your best bet if you are very fair skinned. For those with darker skin, SPF15 will do for a day in the sun, but no matter your skin type, you should make sure you apply sun cream periodically during your time in the sun. Best for children: Children’s skin is more delicate and sensitive than adult’s because of the lack of melatonin, it is more vulnerable to UV rays. Some chemicals in generic sun cream may irritate young skin, so getting a cream that’s made for children is a good idea. The Organic Children Sun Lotion SPF30 from Green People is great for parents who prefer all-natural creams for their children and it’s not sticky either! Sometimes, getting children to use sun cream is half the battle, so why not try a spray instead. The Soltan Kids Dry Touch Spray SPF50 is great for beach days, as it’s not sticky and is very water resistant. For allergy prone skin: If you are prone to developing allergic reactions to creams and beauty products, you should avoid sun creams containing preservatives or fragrances, as well as those containing alcohol. Riemann P20 Once a Day SPF20 is water resistant, quick drying and is paraben and fragrance-free, making it perfect for allergy prone skin. For dry skin: Dry skin can benefit from moisturising sun creams. These are most often creams, lotions, or ointments, so look for these terms on the label. Vichy Capital Ideal Soleil SPF50 Velvety Cream Complexion Refining is perfect for dry skin because it’s rich and creamy. As well as protecting, it also helps reduce dark age spots and encourage your tan to last longer. Jurlique Sun Specialist High Protection Cream SPF40 is also a great choice. This high protection sun cream conditions and nourishes sun-parched skin and feels more like a moisturiser than a sun cream. For fair skin: People with fair skin are more at risk when out in the sun, so a sun cream with an SPF of 30 or more is recommended for extra protection. Frequent reapplication (after two hours outdoors or immediately after swimming or sweating heavily) is especially important. Lancaster Sun Beauty Dry Oil Fast Optimizer SPF50 is perfect for skin that burns easily. The non-greasy oil combines the benefits of an ultrahigh SPF, with a tan-boosting formula. For darker skin: If you have darker skin, you probably tan easily and rarely burn, but you should still use sun cream to protect your skin from UV radiation. You will only need a cream with an SPF of around 15 though. M&S Beauty Sun Smart Moisture Protect Clear Spray SPF15 is paraben-free and made with a skin-caring blend of sunflower oil, aloe and vitamin E. It’s easy to rub in and doesn’t leave any white marks. Don’t forget to protect your locks in the sunshine if you’re prone to split and dry ends. Clarins Sun Care Oil Spray SPF30 can be used on both skin and hair to protect against the drying effects of the sun, salt and chlorine. A transparent, water-resistant dry oil that doesn’t feel greasy!

Hobson’s Choice Wednesday 8 June-Saturday 10 September Vaudeville Theatre London
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first UK production of Harold Brighouse’s enduring and warm comedy. Henry Horatio Hobson, played by Martin Shaw, is one of the great comic characters in English drama. Selfmade man, shopkeeper, skinflint and boozer, he’s a tyrant to his daughters and a law unto himself. When his eldest daughter Maggie defies his wishes by marrying his employee Will Mossop (played memorably in David Lean’s 1954 film by John Mills) a battle of wills ensues in which he stands to lose his customers, his girls and his pride – but ultimately it’s Hobson’s choice. 404 Strand WC2R 0NH; 0330 333 4814, nimaxtheatres.com/ vaudeville-theatre/hobsons_choice

The Science Behind Fantastic Skin at S-Thetics By Alex Bailey-Staines
F
ollowing on from visiting the newly opened S-Thetics, medical aesthetic clinic in Beaconsfield last year I was delighted and excited to be invited back to trial their latest facial treatment, the HydraFacial. Currently enjoying a lot of publicity from celebrities such as Karren Brady, Paris Hilton, Alex Gerrard and Ivanka Trump, I was very interested to learn if this was mere PR hype, or, if it really would make a difference. Walking in to the clinic is rather like walking in to an expensive and luxurious private medical centre with scented candles and soft lighting and I was made to feel very welcome by the friendly and knowledgeable receptionist, Louise. After completing a comprehensive medical questionnaire, I met with S-Thetics Director, surgeon and medical aesthetic specialist, Miss Sherina Balaratnam, MBBS, MRCS, MSc (UCL), who spent some time discussing with me my general health and any concerns or issues I had specifically with my skin health. Before starting any treatment, and immediately after, close up pictures are taken of all patients using both a camera and a state of the art imaging system (VISIA) that examines key areas of your complexion (UV damage, wrinkles, redness, pores etc.). These are not the sorts of pictures you will want to post on Facebook! But they do enable the best course of treatment to be identified for you, as all treatments are personalized to the individual, and, while maybe not for social media publication, they also provide some fascinating, before and after, comparison data.
S-Thetics would like to invite all Riverside Journals readers to have a Complimentary VISIA skin health consultation and a £25 gift voucher to use toward your first HydraFacial treatment at the clinic. Please contact S-Thetics and quote “RIVERSIDE JOURNALS”.
Although every HydraFacial treatment follows the same formula, the cocktail of complex ingredients is individually tailored to each client, according to their needs. Miss Balaratnam talked me through each stage, clearly explaining exactly what she was doing and why. Understanding the science behind the treatment was fascinating and I loved that a lot of the active therapeutics were natural botanicals used in combination with the latest scientific research to ensure the best possible outcome using a non-invasive, non surgical intervention for no side effects, no down time and great results! The procedures are all, unexpectedly, quite relaxing, and I think if I hadn’t been quite so interested in all the science, I would probably have actually dropped off! Indeed Miss Balaratnam confessed that it is quite common for clients to fall asleep during treatments! The HydraFacial is a bit of all round magic with so many applications, whatever your needs - age spots, acne, congestion, anti-ageing, skin brightening, and pigment reduction... It offers skin health, for life, to clients whether they are male or female, young or old… S-Thetics is a dedicated Medical Aesthetic Clinic specializing in advanced face and body treatments and to making your skin the best it’s ever been. I went in with skin that was tired, tight, lumpy, and bumpy and came away feeling like my face was alive again… plumped, smooth, firm, super clean and healthy. Sherina Balaratnam knows her stuff and, for once, the hype is right – if you want great skin, go visit! ulu, the lifestyle brand behind the pioneering British designed Laundry Ladder and other laundry-friendly products, are gearing up for an exciting time beginning in June including becoming a proud supporter of clothing campaign Love Your Clothes. When it comes to the laundry process, the ethos for Julu and Love Your Clothes is very similar. They both want to promote the benefits of caring for clothes properly so that they stay in good condition for longer. Julu’s passion is centred on finding new innovative products that aim to revolutionise domestic life. Love Your Clothes encourages the general public to care for clothes in the best possible way throughout the laundry process by following the instructions on care labels when washing and drying. There are so many benefits to line drying – it helps clothes last longer, helps to minimise creasing and opting to line dry rather than using a tumble dryer saves on energy bills as much as up to £160 per year. Julu also offer products such as Laundry Wash Bags, and Sock Sorters – which keep socks paired throughout the wash ready for drying. You can see what Julu has to offer at Spirit of Summer at Olympia this month. Returning for a second year, it’s an opportunity for customers to meet co-founders Julia and Lucie and see the products up close and personal. Julia said, “We always enjoy hearing from our customers especially at shows when they often call by the stand to share their own experience of using the Laundry Ladder”. Lucie added, “Finding products that will make the laundry chores easier always brings a smile to my face”.

So when is a door not a door? When it is not double or triple glazed and securely shut!
123 the riverside journals
t is strange how we can often remember old jokes that our school friends and parents told us.........particularly the bad ones! That said, in this energy conservation age, thermally efficiency wise, a door in practical terms is not actually a door (in the energy saving sense) when it is a-jar, as obviously when open a door lets out all the energy that has been generated by the property’s heating system. A door is also not a door when it is a-jar in the security sense either, as it is designed to provide access and egress for the owners of the property, along with their friends, family and visitors. Nowadays you don’t find many UK householders who leave their front and/or back doors unlocked at night! Some old fashioned folk still choose to risk leaving them open during the day, but if they were to be burgled their insurance company would not pay them anything, in the same way if an unlocked car is stolen. In today’s modern society, most insurance companies insist on multi-point locking for front and back doors, and sometimes require an additional deadlock, and unless when you leave your property you do lock both locks (i.e. both the yale lock and the mortice lock) its contents simply will not be insured, despite the fact you have paid a premium! Doors are a common cause of draughts and leaks in most homes, so fitting replacement double glazed or even triple glazed residential doors is a sure way to reduce the amount of heat your property is losing as a result of retaining old inefficient doors. The added bonus is that multi-locking comes as standard on virtually every aluminium, composite and UPVC double glazed front door in the UK marketplace. By raising the door handles vertically on these high security doors, one not only activates the locking mechanisms, but also engages the gaskets around the door frame, which creates a seal, keeping out the cold, reducing draughts and keeping expensive heat inside. A door is neither a container (i.e. a jar!) when it is open or shut, but when open it does let the cold outside in and the warmth stored inside out. Thermally efficiency wise, your property will greatly benefit by fitting it with high quality double glazed doors, and obviously will benefit even more if you install a triple glazed UPVC front door, back door or a set of triple glazed French doors. Aluminium double glazed residential doors are excellent replacement doors in terms of added energy efficiency and security, however the most thermally efficient and secure doors are the top of the range composite front doors, and composite French doors that are available in the UK. The downside is that high quality double glazed composite front doors do cost more than UPVC or aluminium replacement doors, but when it comes to saving energy, the security of your home and fantastic aesthetic appearance, do you really want to compromise and settle for second or third best? Even though Hazlemere’s composite door ranges are the most expensive types of replacement doors in their High Wycombe doors showroom (although still far less than the cost of double glazed solid hardwood front doors), they are still Hazlemere’s best-selling front doors, a fact which rather tells its own story. That said, when it comes to replacement back doors, kitchen doors or French doors opening into the garden or onto the patio, most owners in the South of England are more than happy to install UPVC or aluminium doors as their back door or kitchen door, given these areas are usually more secure in the first place, and the double glazed replacement aluminium or UPVC doors are a dramatic improvement both security wise and thermally wise on the old leaky and draughty doors.

Property and the great Brexit lie It’s like watching an episode of Jerry Springer: Extreme views, a lot of shouting and not much listening. Unfortunately this also seems to be the way the “debate” over EU referendum is being conducted – a gigantic talk show with egos and emotions getting in the way of common sense. At the moment the bookies are pretty certain that the UK will vote to stay which is good for property prices. But what will happen if we do vote to leave? According to the “Remain” campaign: 1. House prices may fall 2. Interest rates will rise 3. Inflation will explode 4. Jobs will be lost 5. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will ride into Mayfair And indeed this may happen (well maybe not number 5). But only if we decide to shoot ourselves in the foot. Indeed, as Ed Conway of Sky News and others have pointed out, it is a scenario that is so unlikely that it is absurd that the Treasury is focussing on it. What are much more revealing are the figures that they are omitting, which show that the most likely scenario will be similar to the “Norwegian” agreement. This suggests that there will be no recession and that the world will keep spinning! Understandably many buyers and sellers are waiting and watching. Interestingly virtually everyone I speak to thinks the “Remain” vote will win, because of point 4 it is enough of a fear to persuade many voters to avoid upheaval and an “uncertain” future. But whichever way the vote goes little will change. What I can promise is that even if the UK remains in, there will still be reports in the press about an imminent property crash in prime central London. This is good news for buyers because: Prices should not bounce too much after the referendum It is impossible for the market to crash if everyone thinks it will. There is simply too much money on the sidelines. This is essential to understand. The big property market crashes of 1990 and 2008 happened when the consensus was that prices could only go up, i.e. everyone who could buy property was in the market. Hence the mad frenzy with prices increasing 25-35% per annum in 2006 and 2007. Compare that with the last six years in London where prices have increased at 10% per annum compounded and the fact that this has happened with very careful lending (according to Lloyds Bank 54% of properties bought for over £1m between 2011-2013 were bought with cash and a further 25% with mortgages of less than 50%). In years to come people will look back on 2016 as a great year to have bought property just as we look back at 1998 as a good year, despite the fact that back then things seemed appalling: we had the collapse of the Asian “Tiger” economies, Russia defaulted on its bonds and Long Term Credit Management collapsed putting the financial system in severe danger. So beware being influenced by continued negative reporting. Just remember most of what you read is “noise”. You have to be very clear on the facts so you must not rely on most statistics. They are simply too general and are consequently misleading. Just because falling prices are being reported does not mean that they are in your target area and price range. You must have complete understanding of what is happening in your target market. If you are serious about acquiring a property in London then I suggest you request a complimentary copy of my book, The Insider’s Guide to Acquiring Luxury Property in London, by emailing veronika@mercuryhomesearch.com quoting LRE.
