Editors’ Letter Dear Readers Well, I hope you survived Halloween and all it brought with it! In this issue we are focussing more on the less scary, perhaps, things in life – or are they?! Weddings can be quite scary when you’re trying to decide what you should wear as a guest taking in challenges like the autumnal weather and the fact that you want to look good but be comfortable too. Angelina Colarusso (see opposite) can help take the pressure off with their expert knowledge and fabulous collections. Let’s not forget, of course, the other big event of the year which is being covered in this issue – yes Christmas. It can be scary too if you’re the one hosting for the day. We have a lovely feature on how to get to the big day minimizing your stress levels; after all Christmas is meant to be fun for everyone, isn’t it? We also have a few ideas for buying presents (aimed at the men in your life) and maybe – speaking to the travel company Letsgo2 – finding something special for you to look forward to. I think all that leaves me to say is, we at the Riverside Journals would like to wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful time over the festive season and into the New Year, and thank you to all our readers, advertisers and contributors for your loyal support. Fashioning The Future… Utopia Sassoon Aw16 Salon Collection Inspired by the relationship we have with the digital age and fashion’s many creative visions of the future, the UTOPIA collection captures the optimism of the unknown by drawing on the 60-year brand heritage to create the ultimate hair designs in high definition. “We are living in an age where boundaries are pushed, UTOPIA conjures up a space-age arcadia of ethereal beauty. Strong cut and colour techniques are used to reveal an effortlessly sophisticated look with ultimate high shine” says Bruce Masefield, UK Creative Director.
Super chic, convenient and effortless, this season’s update on the classic Sassoon bob is the messy bob (or mob). To bring this cut to life “shades of pale oyster blonde, pearl beige and lavender have been used to give vibrancy and guarantee ultimate reflection” says Edward Darley, UK Colour Director.
High Definition Shine Contemporary Classic A feminine, modern length, shades of deep mocha, chocolate and light caramel have been placed to softly frame the face and add definition to the cut. To achieve a luxe high shine look, “Use Sassoon Professional Illuminating Oil combined with Halo Hydrate after blow-drying.” says Bruce.
The little black dress of the hairdressing world, “The bob is a versatile look that remains as current today as it was when it was reinvented by Vidal in the swinging 60s.” says Bruce. Blonde hair is timeless and adds radiance to the face. “This season, shades of oyster blonde are combined together with a light cashmere for subtle, head-turning shine.” says Edward.

The Instant Update
A men’s guide to buying lingerie for their partners and getting it right 1 What is the most common mistake men make when buying lingerie? Not knowing the size. To be fair, as 70% of women wear the wrong size bra, we don’t expect men to know any better! But for some reason, before Christmas everybody seems to be a 34B bra and 8-10 bottom. And trust me, most women are not. Our best selling sizes are usually 32D, 32E and 34E in that order. 2 How can they get it right then? Well, they can start by having a look in the lingerie drawer, and check out favourite pieces. Even if it is not the size they should be wearing, at least it is a size they are happy wearing. We need ALL the information: 34 is not a bra size, nor is D: 34D is. For knickers: small, medium, large will do – 1, 2 or 3 won’t. Or a dress size would work. 3 What if they don’t have access to the lingerie drawer? A nice picture will be more helpful for guesstimating the size than saying she is ‘about this size’ whilst demonstrating with their hands. A good bra fitter should be able to tell a woman’s bra size with her clothes on.

4 What is the most popular item men like to buy? There is a tendency to think men like to buy red and black lingerie. Maybe if they are buying for the first time they think it is what is expected of them. Actually, red lingerie is invisible under white tops, so really it is quite practical colourwise. 5 So, what should they buy? Whatever they want to see their partner wear. Lingerie doesn’t have to be practical all the time, or just for the bedroom. A woman can only feel sexy if she is wearing something she feels comfortable and confident in. 6 Is there a lingerie brand men tend to go for? We do sell a lot more Aubade although we also sell from all our ranges if we have their wife’s/girlfriend’s details and know what brands they prefer and their sizes. The colour is up to them… This way, come Christmas morning, everybody is happy. 7 Can they gift a bra fitting? Yes. We usually recommend they either buy a lingerie set or a negligee so there is something to open on the day.
8 What if they really are scared of getting it wrong? Then we would recommend a gift voucher, equally if the lady in question has just had a baby. Although some men think getting sexy lingerie then will cheer her up, trust me, it is not always what she would want. 9 When is the best time for Christmas shopping? Not on Christmas Eve! Any gift purchased between now and then will be exchangeable up to 14th January 2017. We will have a few late night openings the week before Christmas and open Sundays in December 11am-4pm. For a lingerie set I would recommend sooner rather than later as there comes a point when we get a very limited selection. 10 What if a lingerie set is too expensive? Then they can buy her a pretty pair of knickers, or a pair of Wolford tights or stockings. These will always be appreciated and make a great stocking filler too.

fashionable friend asked if I wanted to see her latest purchase. She ducked into her understairs closet and emerged wearing a charcoal grey, cashmere wool coat. As she twirled I noticed it was elegantly collarless. A concealed belt emerged to softly envelope her waist. It was the perfect fit. To the naked eye, a quality item. The label read, Jaeger, and she had bought it for £15. Yes, £15! Welcome to the world of charity shop purchases. I am hardly a charity shop novice. Throughout my college days, on a limited budget, I trawled charity shops, assembling outfits to suit occasions. There was no denying the frisson of excitement when I found the perfect look at an affordable price. In adulthood I continue to do so, albeit on an irregular basis and for different reasons. There is an eclectic, fun element to the whole process. You never know what you are going to find. You are not faced with rail after rail of ubiquitous clothing. A high street purchase may sit alongside a designer item and you are the person to discover it. This type of shopping offers you the opportunity to experiment with colour and style in an inexpensive way and if you make a fashion faux pas you can always exchange or re-donate. It reduces, if not eliminates, all those unworn expensive items taking up wardrobe space. It offers the chance to customise and be creative. Like any type of shopping it can become addictive and you may find that you buy for the sake of buying. This is however easily remedied. Discernment is key. I know some people who only buy labels, and certain labels at that. Others buy accessories to complement clothes they have bought elsewhere and still others are simply looking for a bargain. The choice is yours. My advice is to enter the shops with an open mind, don’t panic buy – shop at your leisure. You don’t always find something to suit but if you pop in regularly, you will. What can be more of the moment than recycling? Charity shops were ‘vintage’ before the term was even coined. Frequenting them and buying from them enables you to do your bit for the planet while at the same time contributing towards a worthy cause. While clutching your ‘to die for item’ you can feel smug and altruistic at the same time. What other shopping experience offers that? The ultimate high is when someone stops you on a London street to admire your outfit. In this instance a grey/blue checked tweed trouser suit from, if I remember rightly, Saks of 5th Avenue. I bought it in Ireland one wet October day while sheltering to avoid the deluge. At £8, it was a steal. However, it was not the price that determined the purchase. I just simply fell in love with it. It was an amazing item to wear and every time I wore it I received compliments. So, if you have never entered a charity shop, I would urge you to do so. My friend’s beautiful coat has reignited my interest, so much so that I have set myself the target of only buying from charity shops for the next year. I know I will make mistakes with some of my purchases, but they won’t be expensive mistakes and I can guarantee I will find some fantastic items and have a lot of fun along the way.

Looking after your Skin in Winter
A
s we move from autumn to winter, the change in weather and central heating can sap luminosity leading to dull and lifeless skin. Incorporating a facial oil into your routine is an excellent way to preserve optimal levels of hydration. They work to penetrate deeper than a cream, enhancing skin’s ability to renew and strengthen itself when faced with the harsh winter elements. Using skincare products infused with oils will nourish and protect skin against future moisture loss. We have discovered a new product range, Lumière Essentielle, which hydrates and illuminates with a powerful combination of the finest botanicals to help lift the veil of dullness, boost moisture and plump skin for a glowing complexion. Formulated by the exquisite Parisian cosmetics brand, Darphin, we found it being offered at Spa Illuminata in Danesfield House near Henley-on-Thames. At the heart of the new crystalline Oil Serum and cashmere-soft Oil Gel-Cream is a blend of meticulously chosen essential oils including tangerine, orange, neroli, rose, ylang ylang, cedarwood and ginger. Artisanally blended drop by drop, 7,000 encapsulated essential oil bubbles are weightlessly suspended in the Oil Serum. Upon application, the evanescent membrane bursts and disappears on the skin leaving a unique texture that blends the freshness of an aqueous serum with the comfort of oil. The Oil Serum is followed with the Oil Gel-Cream giving a featherweight finish that imparts a glowing veil of nourishment. Instantly, hydration is boosted, glow is enhanced and skin blossoms with beauty – a perfect winter skincare regime.

Face the Fat:
The Evolution of body contouring procedures Fat remains one of the most common concerns and widely talked about topics amongst men and women. Even with a good diet and healthy exercise regime, a large proportion of individuals have stubborn or resistant pockets of fat that may seem impossible to lose. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 2015, liposuction was the most commonly carried out procedure (396,048) with abdominoplasty coming in at third place (180,717).
The History and Evolution of Body Contouring Surgical abdominoplasty, otherwise known as the ‘tummy tuck’, has remained the mainstay of excising fat for decades. Whilst the history of body sculpting dates back as far as the 1920s, new methods for fat reduction evolved in the 1970s with the father of modern liposuction, Dr Yves Gerard Illouz (1929–2015) demonstrating his ‘Illouz Method’ using suction-assisted cannulas through small incisions to remove fat. A large percentage of my patients lead busy lifestyles and request procedures to deliver results whilst giving them little or no recovery time. As their doctor, it’s important to offer treatment options ranging from nonsurgical to surgical, tailoring recommendations to patient’s needs and safety.
The commonest non-surgical technologies include: 1 High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) HIFU waves are like sound waves, which penetrate through skin into targeted fat without harming surrounding tissues. Your body slowly absorbs the damaged fat. One or more treatments may be needed. 2 Radiofrequency Radiofrequency produces an alternating flow of current to create an electric field. This drives energy to the areas of fat, which generates a controlled heat deep within the fat cells, which subsequently destroys them. 3 Cryolipolysis Cryollipolysis (‘fat freezing’) received FDA approval in 2010. Fat is disrupted using a form of controlled frostbite by sucking up the treatment area into a hand piece between two metal plates. The area is slowly cooled and localised cell death occurs. Post treatment massage of the frozen block of fat is carried out which is slowly absorbed and metabolised by the body over time.

Here are my top tips when researching your treatment: 1 Ask about independently verified clinical data. FDA-approval is considered the world’s most stringent authority for approving medical devices. 2 Ask your practitioner how many procedures have been carried out and their qualifications. 3 Discuss the pros and cons of the procedure and any potential adverse events. 4 Be clear about your expectations. 5 Large volumes of fat or patients with a high Body Mass Index (BMI) may be unsuitable for non-surgical options. 6 There is no substitute for a healthy lifestyle so ensure you maintain a balanced diet and have regular exercise. 7 If you are considering a surgical procedure, further Information is available on http://www.bapras.org.uk/

4 Laser This latest technology received its FDA approval in early 2015 and launched in the UK this year. This latest laser technology precisely targets the delivery of energy, which bypasses the skin without damaging it, meaning little or no downtime. No massage is required and patients can resume normal activities immediately post treatment.

‘Kensington Acceptance & Mums’ Denial
A
ward winning ‘Mummy group’ and parenting support network, Kensington Mums, has reached its 5th blog anniversary and is holding its second Family Christmas Fair in support of Best Beginnings Charity. Parents can enjoy festive shopping from exhibitors including Bambini and Me, Club Petit Pierrot, Hesper Fox and Finns of Chelsea, while their children are entertained with a variety of interesting arts and crafts activities. Importantly, the exhibitors are also mums in business, and Kensington Mums use the fair as a way of supporting and financially empowering these entrepreneurial mothers. Dina Maktabi, finding herself 2,000 miles from her Beirut home and struggling with post-natal depression, founded Kensington Mums in 2011 aiming to reconnect with other women and create the support network she was missing. It is now a celebrated free-to-join support network open to mothers from all over London with an audience of over 24,000 affluent London-based mothers. They received Mumpreneur UK’s bronze award for Best Website, were shortlisted for the Brilliance in Blogging Awards and listed as a Top 100 winner of the Mumsclub Business Mum Award. Kensington Mums provides everything from family friendly healthy and delicious recipes, to regular competitions giving families a chance to win prizes from a host of wellknown brands, with a destination website (www.kensingtonmums.co.uk) for honest reviews of products and services for London families. In 2014 Kensington Mums launched a (free to download) KM App, meaning modern mums have instant access to the online magazine’s resources.
Now consider: “I accept I drink too much.” This doesn’t mean that you are an alcoholic – it is merely an acknowledgement of an issue that causes you concern – this shift in language and mindset allows you to work out what you want to do about the situation. Awareness is the beginning of change. From here you can work out strategies to tackle the issues you face. Acceptance sounds easy but isn’t. It takes real strength and motivation to let go of how you think things should be, or how you wish they were, and to work wisely and effectively with your reality, especially when you don’t like it. Accepting can be the hardest and bravest thing you can do. Sometimes we can achieve change on our own; sometimes we need support to make change happen. If you need help, Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, is available by appointment for private consultations and motivational meetings.

When you are struggling with a situation and a well-meaning friend tells you that you need to accept it and get on with it, how does that make you feel? Often when challenged our first response is anger and denial. But acceptance is an initial step towards successfully dealing with a difficult situation. It is not the same as resignation, or denial. By being resigned to something, you are effectively telling yourself that there is nothing you can do to change the status quo. Denial is worse! But acceptance means you understand x has happened and although you may not like it, you recognize that you can’t change what has been, only how you move forward afterwards. When you give up resistance and denial you can instead use your energy to find a way forward. In this way, acceptance is liberating. This example is about drinking to excess but it could equally be about any sort of damaging behaviour. Think about this statement: “Sometimes I drink too much and can’t remember everything that happens to me. But this is ok because I don’t do this more than once a month.” This demonstrates the language of someone in denial, someone who will be resistant to changing the status quo.

ardware Club, the first community-based venture firm for hardware startups, has partnered with Harrods and, this October, launched its first-ever UK retail space. This launch marks the advent of a new way of retailing technology products, bringing Harrods customers the opportunity to experience the most innovative technology from around the world. For the first time, a range of gadgets carefully curated by Hardware Club co-founders Barbara Belvisi, Alexis Houssou and Harrods Head of Technology, Stewart Mancey have been brought together in an immersive space as part of the Harrods Technology department on the Third Floor of Harrods. Described as “the place where startups grow together”, Hardware Club offers an alternative route into the world of technology retail to those with an idea for the next big gadget. The club’s mission is to empower the next generation of hardware founders by providing its members with access to the club’s resources, which includes expertise in manufacturing, distribution and retail to support their growth. This community-based approach allows the startups to grow and develop organically. Since its inception in 2014, Hardware Club has selected more than 225 companies from 30 countries as members. Hardware Club believes that consumer electronics should not be about merely showcasing products. Instead, they are proud to have teamed up with Harrods to build an exclusive discovery space, allowing consumers to explore devices in their own environment.

How to spot a bargain property in prime central London As a buyer you have one basic goal: To acquire the best property for the lowest price possible.
It sounds simple but is not easy to achieve as: You are in competition with other buyers The estate agents are trying to achieve the highest price possible for the sellers The market is extremely fragmented You need access to off-market properties Valuing a property is complex Property negotiation is a skill that most buyers don’t possess
So how can you find a bargain property?

There is no substitute for thorough research. You must ensure that you have total market coverage so that you see every opportunity. If you don’t then you will fail. Secondly, you must be confident in your own judgement. Why? Because humans are herd animals, e.g. if a property has been on the market for ages, people ignore it because they assume that there is something wrong. However, our best acquisitions have often been when we have taken advantage of such ignorance. A case in point is a house we have just bought for one of our members. It is the best house on one of London’s finest garden squares. Over 18 months it had been gradually reduced in price until it was valued at less than inferior houses on the square. We were able to secure the property for a further £1.5m (or 12%) discount on an asking price that was already below fair value. Now this property was on the open market yet no one had offered as everyone was wary. But you have to look at the facts. If you are swayed by popular opinion then you are doomed to follow the herd. Now, you will probably have to look at a lot of shocking properties before you find such an opportunity, but if you don’t have total market coverage and only see 33% of the market (most buyers see less than this), then what chance do you have? This is not glamorous work; I have personally inspected over 20,000 properties for our members and have bought less than 1% of these. Now you may be thinking it’s much easier to find these opportunities if you have a budget of £10m+, but actually it’s true across all price ranges. We have helped several people buy excellent properties at £1m as well as much bigger transactions. The strategies we use don’t change.
So if you want to buy a home or investment but: Don’t have the time to see all the properties on the market Don’t have access to off-market properties Need help negotiating Are unsure of market conditions and the effect of Brexit

De-stress your festive season planning
W
e all love the festivities that come with the Christmas season. The fire roaring while we sip mulled wine and watch classic Christmas films. But what those films don’t always show is the stress that comes hand-in-hand with planning the perfect Christmas Day; from last minute gift shopping to making sure the turkey is cooked on time. We have you covered with an essential guide on how to plan your Christmas without the stress. Take turns. Whether you celebrate Christmas with family or with friends, try to take turns hosting the lunch or dinner each year. You can also delegate the cooking; you supply the sides while a family member cooks the meat. Get your groceries delivered. Thank goodness for online shopping! Avoid the shops altogether by doing all your Christmas food shopping online and getting it delivered directly to your door. Festive season delivery slots fill up fast though, so be sure to book your slot early. Most supermarkets set up their Christmas online delivery service in late November/early December so get checking the sites now. Have all gifts bought and wrapped by the 20th. Shop out of hours if you
can, most shops stay open till 10pm in the run-up to Christmas, so make the most of late night shopping! Make sure you get all your shopping done as early as you can, you don’t want to get caught up the day before Christmas Eve trying to find a gift for your fussy aunt. Watch what you’re spending and stick to your shopping list. If Christmas spending is your biggest stress, write a list of what food and gifts you need to get and stick to it! Cheat when cooking. There’s no need to make everything from scratch, no one will even notice. Buy pre-made cranberry sauce and gravy instead of stressing over getting the taste just right. Avoid Pinterest ideas (unless you’re super good at homemade crafts).
Pinterest is great for getting DIY and celebration ideas, but homemade Christmas decor can be another stressful element to your planning that is not necessary. Try to keep away from the need to ‘pin’ ideas to your board for at least two weeks before Christmas Day. Choose what’s important and scrap the rest. Christmas time competition
can make you go crazy with throwing in too many aspects to the day. Remember what is important about the holiday and stick to the basics. Give vouchers to people hard to buy for. Print out personalised vouchers or Buy pretty paper plates so there is less washing up to do. Anything that will reduce the post dinner clean up is worth getting; Christmassy paper plates are not only pretty but make it super easy to clean up. Take a break. At the end of the day, the Christmas season is supposed to be a happy time, so when you start feeling the stress weighing you down, stop the planning and take some time out for yourself.

Chococo
ward-winning chocolatier Chococo was founded by husband and wife team Claire and Andy Burnet 14 years ago in Swanage, Dorset. Claire wanted to create delicious chocolates that were freshly handmade and didn’t use any additives or preservatives, in the style of artisan chocolates she tasted in the 1980s when her parents lived in Brussels. From the beginning they made all the chocolates freshly by hand with origin chocolate and this is something that the company still does today. Working with only fine origin cocoa from the Caribbean, Venezuela & Madagascar, their mouth-watering creations are unique as they also use local Dorset and Hampshire produce, including fresh Dorset cream, wherever possible. To date, Chococo has won 68 fine food awards for its chocolates and in the recent International Chocolate Awards 2016, it won two World Silvers and one World Bronze. Always innovating in the flavours of chocolates it offers and also in the stylish way it packages them, their chocolates make great gifts for the festive season. The Christmas range includes stocking fillers, gifts to share, chocolate hampers, and of course selection boxes of its seasonal, freshly handmade chocolates. The Christmas Selection Boxes (£14.95 for 16 chocolates; £19.95 for 25 chocolates) include festive flavours such as Gingerbread Caramel, Figs steeped in port, Mulled Wine, Nutmeg and a Fizzy Pudding of spiced praline with popping candy! No matter what size you choose to buy, all the chocolates are presented in Chococo’s iconic, colourful presentation boxes. For the young and young at heart, why not select one or more of the new Nutcracker and Sugar Plum Fairy Tubes (£5.95/100g each). Each of these gorgeous tubes is filled with chocolate Christmas shapes including snowmen, Santas and Christmas trees. They come in 43% Venezuelan milk chocolate, 67% Madagascan dark chocolate, or aromatic Dominican Republic white chocolate. For a more substantial gift you could order one of Chococo’s Chocolate Hampers. Prices range from £25 for a Hot Chocolate Hamper, to £100 for the Giant Christmas Hamper. This hamper is full of tempting treats including a box of Gold award-winning Gingerbread Caramels, dark chocolate covered orange segments, studded slabs, festive novelties and many other goodies. It’s a great gift to buy a whole family for the festive season. As well as being able to order online at chococo.co.uk, chocolate lovers and Christmas gift buyers can also visit Chococo’s three Chocolate Houses in Swanage, Winchester and Exeter, its newest one. Visiting one of the Chocolate Houses is a totally immersive experience into the world of fine chocolate. Not only can you browse the selection of Christmas chocolates, you can also enjoy one of Chococo’s addictive origin hot chocolates, delight in a chocolate fondue or enjoy locally baked cakes.

oot7 have taken the Corkcicle Classic to new levels and created the Corkcicle Air, designed to keep your wine chilled from inside the bottle. The Corkcicle Air includes the exciting new addition of a pour through spout, with a stateof-the-art aerator that instantly expands the aromatic profile of your wine as you pour. Just like the original, the Corkcicle Air also cools down wine to room temperature and maintains this perfect chill for up to an hour. The innovative built-in aerator instantly brings balance to your wine as the icicle chills. The aerator works by drawing air into the second hole in the top of the Corkcicle and the velocity of the wine being poured brings the air down into the Corkcicle, mixing with the wine before leaving the spout. Aeration of wine helps to release characteristics and aromas that might otherwise have been missed. The addition of the pour-though-spout means you no longer have to remove the Corkcicle from your bottle when pouring. Simply leave it in and tilt the bottle to pour the wine through the Corkcicle Air, drawing out the properties gained from extended decanting, immediately when pouring. To experience the benefits of the Corkcicle Air, simply place in the freezer for about two hours before you enjoy your wine. Then put the Air into your chosen bottle and let the Corkcicle do the rest.

nyone who is a foodie knows about the Michelin Guide, and even those who are not would probably be aware that the world-renowned guide rolled on from a tyre business. But did you know they have a museum space dedicated to Michelin? As I approached the Adventure Michelin in Clermont-Ferrand, located close to the famed Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin rugby stadium, I was greeted by the biggest tyre in the world – a not-to-be-missed photo-op. Upon exploring the interactive museum, I was guided through the ages and stages of the Michelin group and a common symbol throughout is, of course, the Michelin mascot man himself; Monsieur Bibendum, after whom the fantastically French, Fulham restaurant in London is named. It is impossible for anyone to talk about Clermont without making reference to Michelin. Historic statues in the town bearing a tyre is a wink to both industrialisation and the importance of Michelin. Often statues in Clermont feature grapes as Auvergne used to be famous for its wine, but unlike Bordeaux, Auvergne never recovered from a disease that wiped out many a grape crop, and so it was Michelin who offered alternative employment to the vexed vintners. Even now 13,000 of the 140,000 inhabitants of Clermont are employed by Michelin. As well as the Michelin Guide which gives out the coveted stars to deserving restaurants worldwide, the company has made its mark globally with developing radial technology found on all tyres, as well as the convenient concept of folding maps. However, there is much more than this magnetic museum to see in Auvergne. For a start, to carry on the cuisine theme, a wine tasting is a good place to begin and a trip to St Pourcain vineyard to taste their white – 90% Chardonnay blended with the local variety Tressalier grape – is a real treat. Close by is the beautiful Charroux village, literally listed as one of ‘France’s Most Beautiful Villages’ – a coveted title. More than beauty, this village is home to the best mustard available, perhaps because of the Champagne vinegar and Volvic water, as only 2% of the mustard seeds used are French, the remaining 98% comes predominantly from Canada. After eating in nearby Michelin restaurants, for example Maison Decoret where chef Jacques Decoret, who was born and trained in Auvergne, celebrates his surroundings using locally sourced ingredients in surprising, enticing ways – you may want to rebalance your indulgences with some sport or spa. The Auvergne region includes 13 spa towns, the most revered being Vichy, which oozes Art Nouveau architecture and a laid-back healthy appeal, not to mention it’s the only town in France to open its shops on a Sunday. As I walked around the Vichy thermal spa, whose volcanic springs were first discovered by the Romans, I tasted the various waters, from the eggy yet 15-mineral-rich efficacious Chomel spring, to the pleasant tasting and sweet smelling, slightly sparkling, Celestines spring. You could finish your Vichy tour, as I did, by betting on your favourite horse at the Vichy racetrack. Built in 1865 it’s one of the greatest tracks in France. Be sure to book in a tour with the friendly guide for behind the scenes equestrian excitement. Once you’ve had your fill of Auvergne, you can always take some edible memories home, from local delights such as Saint-Nectaire or Cantel cheeses, to a bottle of Kir Chataigne (chestnut syrup to go in your white wine), though my sneaking suspicion is you’d probably prolong your holiday and enjoy it in situ…

You started off your career by singing, would you consider going back into it again? I started off singing by default when I was 18 years old although I never had any intention to be in a pop band. I’ve just done a musical – Thoroughly Modern Millie – on a six-week tour. I’m a bit old for a singing career as such but I like to think of myself as an actress who can sing. I’m not a West End Wendy but I can put a song across. From Eastend girl, to mum in the Hebrides, a tattooed alcoholic to landlady at the legendary Rovers Return, your characters have been many and varied. Which role, if any, would you like to return to? I loved playing Abby Wallace in Two Thousand Acres of Sky which lasted three years, 8 episodes a year; the scenery was amazing and my daughter was young, so I could take her with me. Being a tattooed lady as Marigold Westward in the TV film The Illustrated Mum was fun. It did well, but was a one-off. Was the life of any of your characters ever so appealing that you would like to live it yourself ? I suppose in an ideal world I would like to take myself off to a small island and open a B&B like Abby Wallace, to go back to nature and not worry about hair and make-up! Have you picked up any of the mannerisms or characteristics from the characters you have played? I don’t know – I’m sure it happens along the way but it wouldn’t be for me to say, it’s for others to say. Of course there will be similarities, but when you play a character, you like to make the character as different from yourself as possible. You try to throw yourself in all the roles that you undertake. You played the role Stella in Coronation Street and Cindy in Eastenders, which do you prefer Eastenders or corrie? Well there was a 20-year gap between the two characters, I was a very different person then. Cindy was a more exciting character to play, but both characters were at such different times in my life. You must feel absolutely privileged to be an ambassador for the charities Barnardo’s and Great Ormond Street Hospital. Does it take up a lot of your time? A lot of what I do for them is squeezed in-between work, but that’s what it is all about, giving up your time for them, it’s worthwhile. I have also been a patron of Chickenshed for a long time, the production Kindertransport will be their first production with professional actors. I will be taking part myself. Is it true you are fond of shoes and is it an expensive obsession or frivolous fancy? Years ago I had an obsession with shoes when I was younger and had more money to waste, now I’m older and wiser. I love shoes but I always wear heels at night and trainers in the day. I normally look at someone’s shoes before someone’s face. Expensive shoes last longer! Describe your perfect Sunday? Normally Sunday is my only day off, unless I’m performing on a Sunday. If I’m not working, I would walk the dog, go to the gym, do some hot yoga, go to the pub and have a nice lunch with friends, catch up on TV and clear up in the house. I like pottering, I don’t spend time at home so it is a nice change. I would possibly also see my sister who lives by the seaside. If you had a dinner party who would be your dream guests and what kind of food do you like? I would invite my close friends, I’m not bothered if a celeb came to my house, I’d just want my friends. I love Thai or Japanese food, I’m not a junk food person as I don’t feel great if I eat junk food. I have also disciplined myself to be like that, I see myself as a bit of a product – a machine that has to keep going.
Michelle Collins will be making wishes come true by bringing all the magic of the Christmas season to life as the Genie of the Ring at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre’s much loved annual panto Aladdin Fri 09 Dec – Sat 31 Dec, alongside local comedy fave Andy Collins, TOWIE’s Jasmin Walia and Britain’s Got Talent’s La Voix. With Genies by the lamp-load, belly busting comedy, chart topping songs, bags of audience participation, panto-lands biggest boo-able baddie and maybe, just maybe a real flying carpet this is sure to be the panto that makes all of your wishes come true.
Do you have any pets? Yes, a rescue dog called Humphrey and two cats called Lottie and Lulu. I’m a patron of the charity All Dogs Matter which is a smaller rescue charity than Battersea Dogs & Cats Home but still manages to rehome a good amount of dogs per year. How many pantos have you starred in and do you have a favourite?
As you are starring in Aladdin at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, what wish would you most like to be able to grant for yourself ? To get through the panto run without keeling over! It’s three weeks, but will be fine, I have worked with Chris Dennis before and I’m hoping to stay at nearby Champneys spa, so I’ll be pampered at the same time.

Our children’s education – technology is there to help

T
he world is ever-evolving. Changes in society, politics, science and the environment as a whole will constantly alter the ways in which we live, and we must adapt in order to thrive. In Britain, we pride ourselves on the belief that we lead the world in education. However, while we are certainly ahead with our use of 21st century technology in learning, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the OECD’s international survey of education systems worldwide, shows that we are, in fact, only ‘average’. This result is based upon the skills and knowledge of 1,510,000 15-year-old students in 65 economies across the world. With the teacher shortage, funding cuts, and greater expectations from Ofsted with new regulations all the time, how can we improve our education system, and in turn, boost the skills of our students? A lot rides, of course, on the quality of the school that your children go to. What was the result of its last inspection report; Good or Outstanding? If it was less than this the school is probably not delivering the best education for your child. Mango Marketing works with many schools to educate parents about why they would want their children to be educated there; whether that’s curriculum standards, school values or extracurricular and vocational provisions. By doing this, schools not only keep parents informed but they also attract the best teachers from across the country which, in turn, improves their overall educational standards. Another important element to a child’s education is their ‘at home’ learning experience. Many parents will recognise the constant battle with their children who are transfixed to their digital device. However this needn’t always be a bad thing. There are numerous games and activities available that, although not necessarily clear to the child themselves, are very educational. If you child struggles to read long and, in their view, ‘boring’ books explore Oaka Books and revision material designed to help visual learners learn. Another resource worth exploring is Studytracks, created by Ivor Novello Award-winner George Hammond Hagan, where the hard-to-learn facts within the GCSE curriculum are set to music. The results are incredible! The pace of technology change means that we can’t even begin to envisage the tools our children will be using in their future careers. But if we can encourage them to explore new technologies and new ways of applying them, we are supporting their learning pathway. Shows such as Bett (25-28th January, 2017, ExCeL, London), the world’s largest technology in education event, attracts teachers and parents from across the world and gives them the chance to explore the latest learning resources. Thirty-five thousand educators and parents visit Bett each year. It is open on the Saturday and, in addition to a wide range of eLearning providers demonstrating their learning tools, it also offers a seminar programme with many being of interest to parents. More importantly, it is also free to attend! Check out the website www.bettshow.com and register to attend today.
Understanding Boarding School Syndrome
S
ending children away to boarding school may not be as common as it was in the past, but it is still a predominantly British tradition. Boarding schools of today are much different than in days long ago, but the tradition of leaving young children at a school and away from the parents does have significant implications with regards to attachment theory and mental health issues throughout life. Today, attachment is seen as a primary component for a child, and later an adult, being able to feel a sense of trust and security in their life. This is developed through the continual support of a primary carer, which is often the mother but may also be a father, grandparent or a guardian.
The Boarding School Issue To a child, being dropped at the doors of the boarding school can be devastating. Their sense of trust and security is abruptly severed, and they are seemingly thrown into a world where they have to try to make sense of the situation on their own. Additionally, children often felt and still feel a sense of betrayal and abandonment, and see their parents as the force that put them in this emotionally unsupportive environment. This was seen, at least in early times, as a chance to build strength, leadership and character. Children in these schools typically gravitated towards teams or older students, but this also has risks as these attachments can be unhealthy, unstable and even abusive.
The Results Not all children going to boarding schools experience this “Boarding School Syndrome”. Some children coming from dysfunctional and abusive home environments may thrive in the setting where there is structure, routine and clear expectations. These children may, in fact, do better when not in these destructive home environments. For other children, the result of being ripped away from their primary care creates trauma, emotional pain, anger, anxiety and depression. Many children struggle for the rest of their lives to trust in a relationship. They are also in a group that is more at risk for substance abuse, for repressing emotions and for seeing themselves as their sole resource in life.
St George’s where music and singing are a way of life
S
t George’s School was founded in 1348 to educate a handful of boys to sing in a newly built chapel within the walls of Windsor Castle. Seven centuries later, the school is a thriving establishment of 350 children where music remains at the heart of what we do. An unbroken tradition of choristers singing daily in St George’s Chapel continues, but that is only part of the musical buzz that is tangible in every corner of our school. As a school which recognises music as one of its four founding principles, St George’s seeks to realise the musical potential in every one of our pupils: we do this by providing a wealth of resources and learning opportunities to cater for their many needs and desires. Kodály and Dalcroze influence our teaching, allowing the children to access music from all angles and make it great fun! There are choirs, instrumental ensembles, jazz bands, a music theatre group, regular concerts, tours and workshops, to name but a few. This year, the pupils have the added excitement of a new recording studio and iMac lab, three grand pianos and a battery of new trumpets and trombones. The Chamber Choir will be going on tour to Poland, whilst the Chapel Choristers will tour the Netherlands. The larger Supers’ Choir will perform at the Cadogan Hall in December alongside musicians from the Royal Academy of Music and our senior instrumentalists will visit Wellington College for a day of orchestral music making. At the heart of our children’s musical journey is an understanding and love of music – the joy of music in our school is infectious, and it inspires happiness and confidence in our children helping them achieve their goals, dreams and ambitions.

Parents as First Teachers
I
have worked in an educational environment for many years. However, I am choosing to write this piece, not from a professional perspective, but from that of a parent, as parents are children’s first teachers. In my experience, self-motivation is key to the whole learning process. This is something that we can foster in our children from a young age. We do this every time we praise/reward our children for effort. It is invaluable as it encourages them to try and try again. Success, when it comes, is all the sweeter for it. Make a fuss of them when they succeed. It encourages future success. A combination of encouragement and celebration minimises the fear of failure. View setbacks as a stepping stone to success. Talk to your children about times you may have failed and how you used that experience to succeed. Failure is not something to fear. All learning involves anxiety. We fear what we do not know. Consider how you feel as an adult when challenged to learn something new. Uncertain? Excited? Anxious? From my point of view, there is always an element of anxiety. This is not necessarily detrimental so long as it is contained. Anxiety, effectively harnessed, can prove productive. Encourage your children to talk to you about their anxieties. Search for solutions to problems together. Problem solving is an essential skill for your child to acquire, in order to learn independently. Probably the best piece of advice I received when my children were young was to read to them. I was advised to read not only contemporary books but also the Classics. When my son was 11, I remember my husband reading Great Expectations by Charles Dickens to him. It became a nightly ritual. My son did not understand a lot of what was read, but it led to many questions and so an opportunity for incidental teaching. Not only were they spending quality time together but, without knowing it, my son was developing his vocabulary. It led to him becoming an avid reader. He now earns his living through writing. It is important that learning is as much fun as possible. Children learn well when they are relaxed and enjoying the experience. I taught my children their times tables by making a game of it. Just before I dropped them at school each morning we would do a quick-fire session; seven times seven was their favourite as it was their father’s age at the time. Encourage your children to have goals and to work towards those goals; to not expect instant gratification. Delayed gratification is a superb self-motivator for learning. It teaches perseverance and enhances willpower. It helps with the attainment of ultimate goals. Children learn by example. Unfortunately, you may have to resist that chocolate biscuit if your goal is to lose weight and influence your children positively!

amian Elwes started out painting the studios of his favourite artists in Paris as a way of learning from the artistic luminaries. This body of work has now grown into a vast collection of visually stunning paintings that will be exhibited in London next month. Following on from recent exhibitions of the work in San Francisco and Los Angeles, this is the first time many of the new paintings will have been exhibited in the UK. Taking the artists’ own work as a point of reference, Elwes uses their own aesthetic as a way of recreating their studios, many of which no longer exist. To research each artwork, Elwes delves deeply into history, scrutinizing dozens of photographs and literary sources as well as the masters’ own paintings. He also seeks out the buildings where the artists’ studios were once situated. In the case of Matisse, his sleuthing resulted in the rediscovery of the house in Collioure where the artist invented Fauvism in 1905. In the case of both Cézanne and Kahlo, he successfully reconstructed the original arrangement of furniture. “The sense of painterly well-being that pervades [Elwes’s canvases] comes from painstaking research,” explains the art critic Anthony Haden-Guest. “Elwes wants the viewer to feel he is witnessing creation...to feel what it is like to inhabit each of these painters.” For Elwes, there’s also the conviction that these studios are found compositions. “These people were so visual that even the negative space has been thought about,” Elwes observes. “So what I’m doing is painting thousands of still lives laid out for me by the most creative minds of the last century.” Alongside the detailed Artists’ Studio images, Elwes will also be displaying some of his “Goddess” paintings, a series of reclining women in nature inspired by the Amazonian mythology that the source of the river is a woman and all life comes from her. The two sets of work exhibited together show the range of Elwes’s style, often mimicking the style of deceased masters for his studio pieces, while being much freer and more at home in nature with his Goddesses. Damian Elwes was born in August 1960 in England and now lives and works in Santa Monica, California. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across America and Europe.

The British ‘Godfather’ of Pop Art
t’s Friday evening and I can hardly contain my excitement as I am about to board the CCA Art Bus parked on the pavement next to the ‘Eye Like’ Gallery at 18 Gregories Road, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. Saro, the gallery director, has secured a pit stop for the mobile work of art by the British godfather of Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake, and the bus, I am told, contains many of his stunning limited edition signed prints. Before now, the bus route included stops at the Goodwood Revival, Christies, the Mall Galleries, the Royal Albert Hall and Babington House, with passengers including Harry Hill, Helen Mirren, Kevin Spacey and David Tenant. ‘Eye Like’ Gallery is also the first gallery worldwide to show Peter Blake’s brand new piece ‘Dazzle’ as well as other pieces by the famed pop artist. Nik, Saro’s husband, introduces me to this new masterpiece and I fall in love with it immediately. In a white square frame, the screen print is circular, a disc shape reminiscent of church rose stained glass windows. It uses primary colours, first used at the Bauhaus in Germany, and encompasses many references to Blake’s early work as well as his recent exploration of the ‘dazzle’ effect. This effect was originally a method of helping vessels avoid enemy detection in World War One. In 2015 Blake was commissioned to ‘dazzle’ a Mersey Ferry; the result was ‘Everybody Razzle Dazzle’. The use of bright yellow, blue, red, green, black, white and the pink center are totally mesmerizing. Nik is very keen to distract me with more of Blake’s prints: there is his stunning silver dust Union Jack, an ‘I Love You very much’ lit panel with gold and silver leaf limited edition. This one is number 15 out of 25 and the small print run means the price tag is more elevated than any other masterpieces here tonight: it retails at £8,000.00 and is worth every penny if you want to have a collectable piece of history. Blake’s lenticular ‘Eiffel Tower’ catches my eye too, but for now I am very keen to get on the bus and grab a drink at the bar. I get my bubbly and canapé, courtesy of Benedict’s the great little café a few doors down, and go up the bus’s narrow staircase. There I am greeted by more iconic Blakes: bright, bold and stunning such as his cigarette packet prints, amongst many others. After a heady tour of the bus gallery and a chat with one of the Worton Hall Studio representatives (Studio where the Blakes are printed), I go back inside ‘Eye Like’ Gallery. I quiz Nik about the birth of this art space and he explains that it opened in May 2014. With Nik’s background in graphic design and Saro’s passion for paintings and prints developed at the Chelsea School of Art, they were keen to create a London gallery in the middle of Buckinghamshire but without the mystique: an approachable space showing contemporary colourful art for the home without the intimidating feel of the Capital’s galleries. At ‘Eye Like’ gallery there is a relaxed atmosphere but you can tell these people are serious about their part within the collectors’ market. This small gallery is chic but it has a Tardis-like feel about it; clever sliding walls hide further works such as Banksy signed prints Pure Evil, Bonnie and Clyde, Lora Zombie and more limited editions. They offer an art consultancy service and you can discuss your requirements at the gallery or, if you prefer, they can come and visit your home. They also offer a framing service. Nik and Saro certainly know their contemporary art business and have impeccable tastes. They will undoubtedly make any interior feel homely and I have certainly been charmed by their art magic, and like a very well-known sport’s presenter sharing this space tonight, I go home in the knowledge that, like her, I may have just purchased a little bit of classic British Pop Art … can’t wait to get it home!
Buy your Christmas Gifts at Auction With Christmas fast approaching, it’s also time to start thinking about finding the right gifts for family and friends. Deep down we all want to find the perfect gifts, but with online shops selling the same products all around the world and most shops on the high street now chains, it’s actually quite difficult to find unique, quirky and more personal presents.
But why not try and buy Christmas gifts at auction?
A catalogue will be available from the middle of November, for more details, please visit www.catherinesouthon.co.uk. The sale can be viewed on 6th December and the morning of the sale at Farleigh Court. Catherine does regular valuations in her office at the Ripley Arts Centre in Bromley and around the South East – please visit the website for more information.

Catherine Southon, well-known through BBC antiques programmes like Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip, will have an auction just in time for Christmas – on Wednesday, 7th December 2016 at 11.30 am. It will take place at the Farleigh Court Golf Course and you can view everything in the sale the day before and on the morning of the sale. A catalogue, which may help you pick out a few potential gifts, will be available from mid November. Catherine’s sales always include a wide range of jewellery and watches, paintings and prints, ceramics and glass, silver, small furniture, other works of art and collectables. All make good gifts for someone – think nice necklaces, cufflinks, watches by well-known brands, stunning vases, modern prints, an antique tea service, a decanter or a Dinky toy. This particular sale will give you a chance to buy some of the best in decorative arts when the collection of a fashion designer with impeccable taste comes up for auction. Richard Channing began collecting in earnest when the family moved to Kew in 1968. Business trips to fashion shows and design fairs all over Europe meant that he could gather an eclectic mix of antiques. He cultivated an early love of ceramics and the Arts and Crafts movement – his unerring good taste meant that he greatly admired the works of Keith Murray and Christopher Dresser. The sale also includes ceramics and glass by designers such as the Martin Brothers and Rene Lalique. He often travelled to Scotland, where his love of Charles Rennie Mackintosh lead him to the Glasgow Print Studio. He was an avid supporter right from the beginning in 1972, and bought a large proportion of the works on paper there, including Peter Howson and June Carey. He was also very involved in the London art scene and his collection reflects that. His collection is a true reflection of the life of a collector who did not just know what was going to be fashionable, but also had a real feeling for what worked well together. So anyone attending the auction has now a chance to bid for some of these lots and give a stylish Christmas present.

oland started shooting fashion 12 years ago. After travelling around Europe for many years, he eventually made London his home while he kept working worldwide, realising both editorial and advertising commissions for the fashion and beauty industry and collaborating with music artists, film actors and celebrities. From cinematic natural-light scenes to sophisticated studio settings, Woland creates elegant and imaginary visuals and videos, with a mysterious sense of timeless beauty and suspended atmospheres, influenced by Renaissance and Art Deco masterpieces. He recently realised a video for Gucci inside Westminster Abbey – first artist ever allowed to do so – published on Harper’s Bazaar Arabia. Over the years he has been producing many editorials for magazines such as Elle, V Magazine, Wonderland, Vogue.it, amongst others, campaigns and look-books for a vast array of fashion brands and emerging designers, swimwear, jewellery, cosmetic and hair products advertising. He is currently realising the 2017 edition of the much celebrated and utterly bizarre “Bearded Men In Silky Kimonos” calendar.

SelfCleaning Conservatory Roof Glass, Fact or Fiction?
81 the riverside journals
S
elf-cleaning glass was once described as “an impossible dream”, but thanks to an intensive research and development programme many years ago by the world’s leading glass manufacturer, Pilkington, self-cleaning glass is neither fiction or an old wives’ tale, and it can even over time (with a little precipitation to assist) make bird droppings disappear! Pilkington Activ was the world’s first self-cleaning glass and has a unique dual action that harnesses the forces of nature to keep the glass free from organic dirt, providing a surface that requires less cleaning, whilst also at the same time delivering clearer, better-looking windows. The secret of Pilkington Activ is a special coating that reacts with ultra-violet (UV) rays from natural daylight (which works even on overcast days and during the night) to break down and disintegrate organic dirt. Organic dirt generally comes from living plants and creatures (i.e. tree sap or fingerprints or bird droppings), whilst inorganic dirt comes from non-living sources (i.e. cement or plaster dust etc.). The special coating needs 5-7 days exposure to daylight to activate fully. Self-cleaning glass really is no fable, as its special coating breaks down organic dirt, whilst reducing the adherence of inorganic dirt. When rainwater runs down self-cleaning glass it washes away the loosened dirt (both organic and inorganic), as the special photo catalytic process used on the coating causes water droplets to spread out to form a “sheet”, enabling dirt particles on the surface to be easily picked up by water and washed off the glass. Inorganic dirt will only be removed by water. Compared with conventional glass, thanks to its hydrophilic form water on self-cleaning glass dries very quickly, reducing unsightly streaks or marks. The special coating on Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass can break down even heavy deposits of organic dirt, but does need UV light reaching the glass to enable the breaking down process to work. So during long dry dusty spells, or if windows get heavily soiled, it is advisable to clean the glass using a hosepipe to replicate rainfall or a soft cloth and warm soapy water to enable the process to start all over again. Please note that a period of reactivation may be required, which again is typically 5-7 days. The beauty of Pilkington Activ’s special coating is that it lasts the lifetime of the glazing itself, as it will not be worn away or rubbed off under normal conditions. The coating is integral to the glass, it will not flake or discolour and can only be affected if the surface itself is damaged, for example by abrasive cleaners or steel wool. The coating is environmentally friendly, containing harmless chemical substances already found in the home (i.e. in bath oils and toothpaste). In fact as only small amounts of cleaning agents are ever needed, self-cleaning glass is kinder to the environment than normal glass which needs regular cleaning. Self-cleaning glass can be installed on almost any exterior application, such as windows, conservatories and glass roofs. It can be installed vertically or at an angle of at least 10 degrees, although most efficient at an angle of 30 degrees or more. Self-cleaning glass is ideal for inaccessible windows where organic dirt normally collects, such as skylights. Specialists and Pilkington glass installers Hazlemere Windows, Doors & Conservatories, advise that self-cleaning glass will prove ineffective if installed under an overhang or in a position where daylight and/or rain cannot reach it, as it has been designed for exterior use only. It should also be noted that slightly darker tints perform slightly better than clear glass in terms of heat reflection. Self-cleaning glass is an excellent long-term investment, as over a period it will save time and money, plus from the cleaning standpoint it is far safer than ordinary glass windows, particularly for conservatories. Pilkington self-cleaning glass can be combined with other glass products in insulating glass units to provide benefits such as thermal insulation, noise reduction, solar control and fire protection. Pilkington Activ is available in clear or blue tinted toughened glass for increased safety and security. It is therefore safe to say that self-cleaning glass is no longer fiction, but a fact. For further information, help or advice about self-cleaning conservatory roof glass options available nowadays contact Hazlemere Conservatories, who have over 30 years’ experience and expertise to fall back on, or visit one of their showrooms in High Wycombe or Welwyn Garden City, where you can see self-cleaning glass on display. Telephone 01628 879244 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

emon Compendium has been brought to you after much research, tasting and travelling, offering a fascinating and varied account of all things lemony, including health tips, beauty tips, household tips, historical accounts as well as countless ‘lemonlicious’ recipes from around the world. Lemon Compendium is an essential book for anyone who has a thirst for knowledge, an interest in healthy living and a love of the surrounding world, different cultures and their cuisines. The ‘must-have’ book for anyone who likes to dabble in the kitchen, conjuring up tasty delights. Riverside Journals special Christmas offer, save £5 (RRP £25.00). To order, email yasemen@parmuto.com quoting RJ in the subject line. To make your copy even more special, ask for it to be signed.
Not only rich with its cuisine, Latvia hosts many fascinating pagan traditions, particularly around Christmas. Such as a yuletide log being lumbered through Old Riga, followed by dancing and burning it on a huge bonfire, signifying ridding of negatives. In the houses children adorned by animal masks, prance around, again to ward off evil. I call this celebration cake, as it derived from sampling both traditional Latvian Christmas yellow bread and Birthday cake (Kringel). Due to ginger cookies being a big Xmas hit, I had to add a touch... Dissolve the yeast in a bowl in half the milk. Set aside for 20 minutes, then add the remaining ingredients to make a dough. Cover with clingfilm, pop into the fridge overnight. The next day, divide the dough into three long strands of equal size, for plaiting. To plait the dough, pinch one end of the three strands together with your fingers, plait them and pinch at the other end to seal. Now connect the two pinched ends, to produce a plated circle. Leave for an hour, after 45 minutes, preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F/ Gas 5. After an hour, the plait should have increased in bulk. Place it on a baking tray, brush with the egg yolks, sprinkle with the almonds. Bake for half an hour, until golden. Dredge with icing sugar, slice and serve.

“For me, lemons are as essential as salt in a kitchen, and I have often thought I would enjoy writing a book of lemony recipes. Yasemen Kaner-White has beaten me to it” Nigella Lawson
Lemon Compendium by local author Yasemen Kaner-White, is a truly unique gift to give your loved ones this Christmas…
A Taste of Italy We are delighted to have been given these two seasonal recipes from the wellknown Caldesi family. Giancarlo and Katie have two restaurants and a cookery school. Caffé Caldesi, an informal bar and restaurant in London’s Marylebone, and Caldesa in Campagna in Bray, Berkshire, both showcase Italy’s finest regional cooking. At their cookery school couples and guest chefs can share the secrets of their trade.
These are the recipes with Giancarlo’s own personal comments:
Marmellata di Mandarini Clementine marmalade We loved this bright orange bittersweet marmalade for breakfast on yoghurt when we were in Sicily. It is equally at home spooned over ice cream, ricotta or on toast with mascarpone. The perfume of bubbling clementines fills the house as you make it and a jar makes a good gift. This will be a loose-set marmalade and fairly low in sugar compared to traditional varieties. There isn’t enough sugar to enable the marmalade to be kept safely out of the fridge, but since we’re only making a small batch a few jars don’t take up too much room. Makes approximately 1.5kg (3lb 5oz)
1kg (2lb 3oz) clementines Juice of 2 lemons 1 litre (34fl oz) water 400g (14oz) granulated sugar
84 the riverside journals
Remove the stalks and hard knobbly bits at the top of the clementines and cut in half, keeping the skin on. Now roughly chop into smaller pieces by hand or in a food processor. The pieces should be no bigger than 1cm (½ in) cubes. Put them into a large heavy-based saucepan with the lemon juice and water and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down to a simmer and allow the mixture to bubble away slowly for 1 hour. By this time the skins should have softened so that you can squash them easily with a spoon against the side of the pan and the marmalade will have thickened to a soft, runny set. Next add the sugar and stir through. Bring to a rapid boil for around 5 minutes or until the sugar has dissolved. Pour into clean, warm jars (I do this by rinsing them out with hot water from the kettle) and screw on the lids. Allow the jars to cool and keep in the fridge. The book is available from Amazon and all good bookshops. ‘Sicily – Recipes from an Italian Island’ published by Hardie Grant. All photography by Helen Cathcart.
Ragù tradizionale di carne Slow-cooked pork, beef & sausage ragu This is the opposite of the Quick Beef Ragu. Traditionally, ragu was made on a Sunday and normally it would be the mamma of the house who would get up early to get it started over a fire, so that it would be ready in time for a late lunch. Nowadays, with slow cookers and heavy, cast-iron casseroles like Le Creuset, you can get it going, turn the oven on low and go out for the day. You will come back to a heavenly feast that is the wonderfully rich and sticky ragu ready to cling to pasta shapes or gnocchi. We tested this recipe at our restaurant in Bray. A couple of the staff are Sicilian and they ate it for their dinner. They loved it and actually became quite emotional! I think we got pretty close to the original recipe. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the types of meat – it really should be made with what you have to hand, so use more beef or pork accordingly. Do try to find proper Italian sausages, though, as they are full of flavour from garlic, wine and sometimes fennel seeds and don’t contain rusk. Serve this with dried or fresh long pasta.
Brown the meat in batches in the oil in a large casserole dish over a medium heat, setting it aside in a large bowl when done. Add the onions to the pan in the remaining oil with the garlic, bay leaves, rosemary and seasoning and cook over a gentle heat to soften. It should take 7-10 minutes. Add the meat back into the pan with the wine and bring to the boil. Allow to reduce for few minutes. Add the tomato purée, tomatoes and stock and stir to combine. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and allow to cook slowly for 4-5 hours. The time will depend upon the cut of meat and the size. You need to cook it until the meat falls easily from the bones. Add the potatoes after around 4 hours and continue to cook until they are cooked through. Add the peas, if using, towards the end of the cooking time. Cook for 15 minutes if using frozen peas and 30 minutes if using fresh ones. Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary. Eat the stew as it is or ladle off most of the sauce and serve it with pasta, followed by the meat and potatoes as a main course served with the purple sprouting broccoli.

team of international artists will be transforming Blenheim Palace into an illuminated wonderland as part of a magical new festive trail this winter (November 25th – January 2nd). ‘Christmas at Blenheim’ will see the Oxfordshire estate lit up by a series of stunning outdoor attractions including a scented fire garden, dancing cascades, sparkling hedgerows, fairy-lit arbours, singing Christmas trees and a lake aglow with brightly-lit boats. Blenheim’s lakeside boathouse will also become a temporary home for Santa Claus as part of the hour-long illuminated festive discovery trail. The event is being created by Zoe Bottrell, director of Northumberland-based Culture Creative, who is enlisting a team of talented artists to create specific illuminations inspired by the UNESCO World Heritage site. Among those taking part are ‘And Now:’ who will be building a scented living fire garden within the existing Rose Garden, Brighton-based light artists and sound designers ITHACA, who are installing singing Christmas trees, and Light Works who will be creating the Fibreoptic Cascade and Fairy Woodland. The French artistic studio TILT are designing 10-metre-tall light flower sculptures and actors from the Walking Theatre Company who will be providing interactive encounters and performances throughout the visit. The trail has been specially designed to appeal for visitors of all ages to enjoy. The Great Outdoors made magical.

Zayane, on Golborne Road, brings Modern Moroccan cuisine for the first time to London.
H
ead Chef, Abdel B’tina, who learnt his craft under the likes of Marco Pierre White and Gordon Ramsay, takes seasonal British ingredients and carefully blends them with authentic Moroccan spices to create food, the likes of which we haven’t quite seen before. In a dining room laced with fragrant cardamom, with bursts of colour from ornate cushions, little wooden stools upholstered in yellow fabric, vibrant wall hangings, glowing lanterns and North African teapots on shelves, the feel is of a mini bazaar. Guests can begin with a trio of dips; a punchy Kalamata tapenade, a light artichoke dip and a sumptuous sun-dried tomato dip are accompanied by flat bread crafted daily in the kitchen. Zayane’s ingenious take on a mixed grill brings together a tender chicken roulade with spinach and herby basil, slices of succulent beef, melting minced lamb and an innovative merguez and mushroom roll. Meanwhile, a lamb shank with couscous and baby vegetables, cooked to perfection, is elegant but heady with the flavours and scents of the souks of Marrakech. A delicious surprise is in store with desserts. White chocolate mousse is given a Moroccan twist with a sprinkling of the national spice, Ras El Hanous, and served with a nutty Sellou crumble – another favourite amongst Moroccans. At night, low lighting and cosy corners make Zayane a perfect choice for a hot date; a heart shaped pistachio mousse and crumble with nougat ice cream is quite literally the icing on the cake!

Evergreen Foliage for Winter Colour www.richardlucasgardens.com Images by Richard Lucas
Happy Gardening! Richard.

W
inter is here and in most gardens herbaceous plants will have all died back, and deciduous trees and shrubs will have dropped all their leaves, so it is now that the evergreen plants come into their own. In the winter these evergreens provide structure in the garden, add interest and colour with their leaves, and whilst some may flower it really is the foliage that is their strength at this time of year. If you are going to use your garden in the colder months then shelter is important, and a south facing sitting area cocooned by tall evergreen shrubs will give you just that, creating a microclimate that is a few degrees warmer than the rest of the garden. Evergreen hedges work well in the garden too; clipped boundary hedges provide complete, all year round privacy, whilst hedges within the garden are useful for dividing up the space into distinct areas. Creating outdoor ‘rooms’ makes for a much more interesting garden, and of course one room can be a winter garden, full of evergreen foliage interest. Evergreens need not be green either, there are golden leaved varieties of Bay, Escallonia, Choisya, Privet, Holly, Tree Heaths and Pittisporum. Golden foliage can really light up a dull corner, but for the brightest colour some direct sun is required. A good idea is to partner a golden foliage shrub with a purple or red leaved one. The contrast is great, each one making the other look more colourful than it is! Good purples and reds include Pittisporums, Cordylines, Hebes, Phormiums and Photinias. The most common form of Photinia is ‘Red Robin’, a large but easily controlled shrub, and although it’s only the new foliage that is red, it does put on new growth all year round so you should get some winter colour from it. Recently a smaller growing variety has become available; Photinia ‘Little Red Robin’ is more compact and has smaller leaves − a definite favourite with me. So mixing evergreens with green, golden, purple and red foliage, and selecting contrasting foliage textures too means that an evergreen planting need never be dull or boring again, and although I am concentrating on their foliage attributes, many of these plants flower too; Escallonia ‘Gold Brian’ has wonderful golden foliage and deep rose-pink blooms, a really eye-catching combination. I often mention the importance of focal points in the garden; objects that are used to draw the eye in a particular direction, and whilst these are usually large pots or sculptures there is no reason why they cannot be clipped evergreen shrubs, or topiary. Topiary specimens are readily available in a variety of shapes and sizes; obelisks, spheres and pyramids are all good, but I do like spirals for the element of movement that they have. In addition to these classical shapes you could also inject some humour into your garden by opting for a topiary dinosaur, peacock or kangaroo! Carefully sited they can actually look quite good. One group of plants that are often overlooked, but are really useful evergreens, are Bamboos. Many people are aware that bamboos can rapidly spread and become a nuisance, but that applies only to certain varieties. For most gardens there are many well-behaved clump forming varieties available. There are many different ways to use bamboo in your garden. I often incorporate bamboos into my designs as a natural hedge or screen, and fortunately bamboos are usually always available as semi mature plants, giving an instant effect. Bamboos also make good specimen plants, isolated on their own in a large lawn, or in woodland areas with low ground cover plants around them. Bamboo stems, or canes, can be green, yellow, black and striped green and yellow too, so it’s best not to crowd them with other shrubs, so that you can see the full beauty of their stems. An issue I often come across in gardens is an overgrown conifer hedge, originally planted as an evergreen screen for privacy, but now out of control and far too large, usually the culprit is the fast growing ‘Leyland Cypress’. Luckily there are some good alternative evergreen trees that can be used to replace these overgrown hedges, which will look attractive, and allow much more light through, enabling other planting at their feet. The Photinia ‘Red Robin’, that I have already recommended as a shrub, also makes an excellent tree, and can be easily obtained as a tree sized specimen. Also worth considering is the evergreen Magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora, which has large green leaves that are rusty brown underneath, and large creamy white scented flowers in summer. The Japanese Privet Tree, Ligustrum japonicum, also has white summer flowers, and camellia-like glossy green foliage. All of these trees can be used as individual specimens, or can be closely planted as a stilted hedge, which is usually what I recommend as a replacement for overgrown conifer hedges. The added advantage with these varieties is that they all respond well to pruning or trimming, to keep them to a certain size if required. Where size is not an issue varieties of Pines and Eucalyptus make great large trees that allow enough light and rain through their canopy to allow under-plantings to flourish, and if you want a subtropical look then the Chusan Palm, Trachycarpus fortunei, is the tree to go for, big exotic palm tree leaves top a hairy trunk and give a feeling of the tropics even on a cold winter’s day.

Lßbeck – the magical medieval town with mounds of marzipan!
I
’ve been to Germany before but not Lübeck, and for late September what a pleasant sunny surprise this town – a short drive from Hamburg and a UNESCO world heritage site, offered. Dominated by eye catching eclectic architecture, from Roman to Renaissance with touches of Baroque and Classical but predominantly Gothic, it’s known as the city with the seven golden steeples. There really is no other town on the Continent with a skyline quite like it. As you enter the town through the famous Holsten Gate, inscribed in gold with the words CONCORDIA DOMI FORIS PAX (unity at home, peace abroad) it is interesting to know that it is the only town in Germany to decide Hitler couldn’t go and spread his propaganda there, a decision by the then 1,932 inhabitants. So famous is the gate throughout Germany that the late Deutsche Mark held its image and now the local 2 Euro coin does the same. Built between 1464 and 1478, it is a powerful reminder of Lübeck’s role in the Hanseatic League and is featured on the renowned marzipan brand Niederegger – the only logo to do so, and so to marzipan – what Lübeck is now most known for today. I was lucky enough to have a tour of the factory to breathe in the allure of roasted almonds myself, in true Willy Wonka style. With Christmas fast approaching, marzipan is THE flavour of ‘the season to be jolly’, and the factory has already kick-started (since summer) production of sultry marzipan santas and rich marzipan reindeer. You can go and visit their stand, alongside many other festive German offerings, at the historic Lübeck Christmas market, founded in 1648 and held annually from the 21st November to the 30th December. If you can’t make the market, Niederegger has a fabulous marzipan café, a must see. I would recommend a selection of marzipan cakes with a marzipan coffee, yes marzipan flavoured coffee! The inspiration of this traces back to Zarenmutter Luise Charlotte, the mother of the former Russian Tzar. A long time ago, pre-planes, in the days of horse and cart, the Tzar would order marzipan from Lübeck but by the time it arrived in Russia the marzipan was rock solid, so his mother dropped it into her coffee to soften it, a lasting legacy. Whilst in Lübeck, located neatly between both the North Sea and Baltic Sea, I’d recommend a boat trip around the city and book a guided tour on foot and spot the remnants of interactive scientific games dotted over the town, a wink to when three years ago Lübeck was crowned the City of Science, and don’t forget a visit to the fascinating parliament building. For food, book dinner in The Seafarer’s Guild to sample traditional local cuisine. If you are brave, like me, order labskaus – one of the most bizarre meals I have eaten; a combination of hot corned beef hash, a fried egg and cold pickled herring and pickled veg. For the main, as Lübeck is so close to the sea, I would suggest the local fish Zander. Wash down with a Spezi, the German ‘delicacy’ of half Fanta and half Coke mixed together or my preference, and more waistline friendly, an Apfelschorle, apple juice and soda mixed. Enjoy!

Smart fortwo
W
hile standing on the forecourt of a petrol station refuelling my car I noticed a man casting admiring glances in my direction. Naturally I was flattered. The sun was shining, the sea was sparkling and I was aware I looked well. He approached, smiled and said, ‘I hope you don’t mind but I was just admiring your car’. Admiring my car! I could only laugh as my inflated ego quickly deflated. I drive a powder blue Smart Fortwo. I have been enthralled by it since I purchased it some four years ago. Initially I bought it as I was a nervous driver and required a car that was easy to park. No problem there. This car is a doddle to park and takes up so little space that it can squeeze in anywhere. It has boosted my driving confidence no end. I bought it in Smart of Beaconsfield and had a number of happy years driving in Britain before moving to Ireland, specifically West Cork. The terrain is somewhat different here to Buckinghamshire, and friends were incredulous that I thought my car would suit. I was advised to buy a stronger, larger vehicle. However, one year on my car is still going strong, passing its recent MOT with flying colours. Rather than incredulity, my car has generated genuine interest, especially from women, and I am regularly stopped and asked questions pertaining to it. The conversations tend to take place in car parks. I return to find someone looking at the car. They smile politely and ask if it is electric. The conversation flows from there. I explain that it is an automatic petrol driven car. I confirm that I find it economical to drive as it has an automated shut start system. I explain that it is a two-seater hatchback and, although a small car, it is surprisingly roomy. This comment is usually followed by a request to sit in the car and I am happy to oblige. I am amused by the interest but not surprised. I have only ever seen one other Smart car in the area so there is a certain novelty value. It is the type of car that attracts comment. It’s small, looks like a toy car but is far from being one. When I mention it is engineered with Mercedes Benz there are gasps of astonishment. I explain that in Britain it is exempt from Road Tax but unfortunately that is not the case in Ireland. I refrain from mentioning that it has interchangeable plastic body panels as I don’t want to blow their minds completely. Although marketed as a compact city car, it holds its own on the narrow, circuitous country roads that I drive. As it is a high car I enjoy good views of the road, sea and surrounding countryside but it also means that I need to be aware of strong winds and drive accordingly. I recently read that in 2002 the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) introduced a first generation Smart Fortwo into its permanent collection. If true, I am not surprised. From my point of view, it is deserving of all the attention.

Quays Culture presents UK’s biggest digital light festival

T
Find out more by visiting: www.quaysculture.com facebook.com/QuaysCulture Twitter @QuaysCulture #Lightwaves2016
his season, Quays Culture will host the UK’s biggest digital light festival, at Salford Quays and MediaCityUK. The annual festival, Lightwaves 2016 will run from Friday 9 December until Sunday 18 December and will feature nine outdoor light exhibitions. #Lightwaves2016 Featuring new and exclusively commissioned digital art displays alongside emerging talent, light workshops, and legendary illuminations - from local, national, and international artists. Lightwaves 2016 will bring light to those dark winter nights, as nine FREE light experiences span across The Quays, from the Plaza between The Lowry and the Lowry Outlet, to MediaCityUK’s Piazza, and even in the River Irwell. A brand new, large-scale commission, specifically for Quays Culture, is Heart Beat, the brainchild of artists and installation specialists, GNI Projects. Heart Beat is part of the GNI Project’s ‘Light Love Collection’ - from one angle Heart Beat is an animated 3D heartbeat pulsing through the sculpture. From another angle, the lights join to form a heart. For the heart to appear spectators are encouraged to make a connection of love, or friendship, by joining hands in front of the sculpture; human touch reveals the heart. Once the connection is lost the heart is broken into fragments again. A first-time showcase for Salford Quays and MediaCityUK, Voyage is pre-existing artwork, which has been shown globally. Created by Aether & Hemera, Voyage features six lines of 33 origami boats. The 198 boats were designed to engage with the community and transform the waterfront. The fleet composes an organic matrix of interactive lights, which change colour when passers by interact with it on their mobile phones. 2016 will see Quays Culture collaborate with lighting legends of the North, Blackpool Illuminations. Quays Culture will be showcasing items from Blackpool’s light collection, including Dr.Who Daleks, Tardis, and Spacemen. There collection will also feature iconic, freestanding children’s characters, including Noddy, Postman Pat and SpongeBob. Today I Love You, created by Massimo Uberti & Marco Pollice, was commissioned for Amsterdam’s Light Festival 2015. Italian artist, Uberti is known for his poetic light installations; he wrote out this simple, yet beautiful sentence in light, so that the words become matter and, more importantly, the uplifting words are repeatedly enjoyed. An emerging talent programme, SHINE, in partnership with Leeds Light Night, sees the creation of three new commissions. Footsteps, by Sam Sebbage, consists of 80 illuminated footsteps walking a path. Edyta Masior is the artist behind Laiki#3 – fluorescent fishing lines are suspended, this interactive installation creates air vibrations, when the strings are plucked, creating sound, like that of a harp. Fire Flies, a creation from Fixed Grinn Collective, is a series of floating illuminations, which interact with their surroundings as they ‘fly’ amongst those that visit them. As part of Quays Culture’s Northern Artist Film Competition, Chris Paul Daniels and Sam Meech won the new commission category. Their commission, One Square Mile, co-commissioned with University of Salford, will employ a range of cinematic techniques to explore environments, architecture and communities within one square mile of Salford Quays and MediaCityUK. Light Graffiti Workshop, by Finnish artist, Tekla Inari, is a creative session, for all ages in small groups or solo, to try painting with immaterial light graffiti. Visitors can make their own memorable light experience, this interactive workshop captures a photograph of their light graffiti, in digital form, following their experience. This is available from Friday 9 December – Sunday 11 December at 12pm-5pm and 6pm-8pm. Quays Culture delivers outdoor arts and cultural events combining the latest in digital technology with the vision of world-class artists throughout the year. Its work ranges from the intimate to the monumental, acting as a series of interventions and invitations to the public realm. Lightwaves 2016 will run daily from 12pm – 10.30pm.
