R Celebrating 25 years of couture The secret behind the glamour

enowned for her iconic style, couture designer Angelina Colarusso is celebrating her 25th year in bridal wear with the long-awaited launch of her first ocassionwear collection; a range of exquisite dresses with all the elegance of her bridal gowns, perfect for every special occasion, from evening and cocktail wear through to Ascot and mother of the bride. Each dress is cut and made to perfection in the UK, by her highly skilled team, where vintage glamour is woven into every stitch and fold of fabric and discreet corsetry is used to give the unmistakebale hourglass silhouette. The beauty of this brand lies in it not being governed by passing trends, whilst remaining true to its influences and values; the golden age of couture, the timeless elegance of the world’s most unforgettable women, and a firm belief that anyone can be glamorous regardless of age, shape or size. “We see few really glamorous women these days as the alchemy has been lost in the blur of our busy modern lives, along with its original definition… a Scots word meaning ‘enchantment or magic’ There is nothing formulaic about this illusive concept. Despite media insistence it simply isn’t just born of the latest fashion or cosmetic trend. Yes, it’s good to know what’s going on and what works for you; it can help you look elegant and stylish, but glamour is so much more; i’ts that extra magic; a decision you make to shine. Marilyn Monroe could turn it on and off at whim, switching from being unoticable to the star she was in an instant. It really had very little do with what she was wearing, but, the rest of us may need a little help with the right frocks and a few carefully selected baubles to give us the confidence we need to sparkle! Ultimately though, glamour is our willingness to celebrate our individuality: to have fun and delight in the part of our personality that is so often hidden in the details of our every day lives. Its the aura we exude when we know in our hearts that what we are wearing looks and feels amazing and is exactly right for us.” Angelina Colarusso Listening to her clients, understanding their needs and encouraging them to express their own personal style is fundamental to Angelina’s business. Designing dresses that help women feel confident is the secret behind the glamour and her 25 years success. The occassionwear collection is now available in the Angelina Colarusso Richmond boutique. Editors’ Letter Dear Readers

The key to gorgeous new season hair? Intense sunshine, sand and salt water from the summer months wreak havoc on your hair and can make it dry, dull and brittle. To keep hair shiny and healthy, it is essential to pamper your locks with a deepconditioning treatment at least once a week. Use a treatment such as Sassoon Professional Intense Restore (RRP: £18) in addition to your regular conditioner as it will replenish and retain moisture. Top Tips:

• • •

Allow hair to dry naturally, instead of rubbing it dry with a towel. Air-drying hair will prevent breakage, which maintains softness and combats frizz. Avoid shampooing hair in hot water, as heat can damage and dry the hair. Use warm water and then a cool rinse as this will add extra shine whilst locking in vital moisture.

Healthy hair gets its strength and shine from a combination of proteins and vitamins, just like our skin. Your hair needs customised care to help keep it healthy, radiant and supple. Thankfully, the experts at Sassoon Salon are on hand to recommend the perfect treatment for you. “Glossy hair means well-conditioned, hydrated hair, so it is important to inject it with moisture that can be lost in the summer months,” says Bruce Masefield, UK Creative Director. Both instant (£15 for 5 minutes) and luxury (£25 for 20 minutes) in-salon treatments replenish the hair. Whether it’s brilliant shine, replenishing moisture or longer lasting colour that you are looking for, the range of luxury treatments at Sassoon will deliver bespoke care for your hair.

7 musthave handbags

12

the riverside journals

Handbags are there to keep all your necessities in one place, sure. But they are also items that complement your outfit or make a bold fashion statement. There are also different kinds of bags for different occasions. You wouldn’t take a beach bag to a formal wedding, nor would you take your best and most expensive clutch out when going for a casual drink at your local pub. Here, we have chosen seven of the different kinds of handbags all women should own.

Handbags are not just a place in which to store your purse and phone. Over the years, handbags have become fashion art, beautifully constructed and brilliantly designed accessories that all women want.

1

1. The everyday bag This one allows you to show off your personal style but is still practical for everyday use. There are plenty of options that won’t break the bank too. On days when you can have some fun with your look, switch things up with this bag in your nine-to-five routine. Shoulder bags are sophisticated and are perfect for your daily go-to. Don’t be afraid of throwing in some statement colour pieces as a bold colour bag can liven up the usual black, white and grey corporate world! www.piajewellery.com

2

2. The formal bag

3

A tailored daytime clutch is a fantastic option if you can deal with editing what goes in and what stays out. Try to choose one that has multiple pockets and a bit of dimension so you can carry your essentials. This is one of those bags you can have fun with so try playing with different materials and colour. If you need a bigger bag for the office but love the idea of carrying a trim clutch for a work lunch or event, just pop the clutch into your larger bag and pack it with your necessities. www.piajewellery.com

4

1

3. The evening clutch Rarely do women choose to buy a fancy evening bag before a special occasion calls for it. But most of us will need one at some point. The most timeless and versatile style you can own is a simple black satin or metallic clutch in gold or silver. If you want a little bit of sparkle, pick one with a jewel on the clasp. www.rockmyvintage.co.uk

4. The hobo bag This kind of bag, which is best for daily wearing, is any big bag that hangs off the shoulder and has a key slot closure. Great for days when you need to be rushing around, it’s big enough for all your essentials – a jumper if you need one later – and looks fashionable too. www.oliverbonas.com

5

5. The weekend tote bag Every woman needs a tote, and not just a big bag to haul stuff around in but one that can also look polished and professional. The canvas weekend tote is an easy, throw-everything-in bag for weekend trips that looks great and can even be thrown in the wash for easy cleaning. A leather tote can work well at the office for hauling laptops and mobile devices to meetings. www.atelierdenagy.com

6. The black one

6

A good black bag is timeless and can be matched with anything you are wearing. This is the essential go-to handbag. A medium to large top handle bag in black that can hold almost everything and a small evening clutch in black are the two you should not be without. www.barefootgypsy.com

7. The cross-body bag

the riverside journals

Choosing a handbag can be tough, after all there are so many factors that go into the decision and so many kinds to choose from. No one says you can only have one of each style, so start your collection of handbags, from the stylish and chic to the colourful, fun and a bit weird!

13

7

A hands-free option is great for nights out on the town and the festival season. This bag affords you great freedom of movement while keeping your necessities close, and it looks much chicer than a backpack. A good cross-body bag will have a sturdy strap that’s adjustable with a front flap that’s easy to manoeuvre. It shouldn’t be too heavy and should be a medium size (go too small and it’s not going to be very functional, too big and it can overwhelm you). www.oliverbonas.com

hether you aspire to collecting or are a connoisseur searching for that elusive object, members of the Cotswolds Art and Antique Dealers’ Association will be on hand to help, inform and guide you to your chosen collecting goal at a fascinating exhibition, ‘Why Antiques? 100 Years of Collecting’ at the Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock. For over 100 years there have been antique dealers in the heart of England helping collectors acquire fine art and antiques. The members of CADA are proud to be continuing this tradition. Visitors will be able to view a selection of furniture, clocks, textiles, glass, ceramics, fine art objects, paintings and watercolours – all labelled with their description and date and displayed by theme or by the specialist’s area of expertise. There will be a Cotswolds Art and Antique Dealer on hand every day of the exhibition to share their passion and knowledge about art and antiques, and to answer any questions about collecting antiques. Saturday 24th September, Lecture by Rebecca Scott: ‘Now Whilst My Hands are Thus Employed’ – Three Centuries of Historic Samplers at the Museum Coachhouse. Tickets (£8 each) are available in advance from the Museum Reception and proceeds will be donated to the Friends of Oxfordshire Museum.

Costume jewellery trends

N

ot only is costume jewellery affordable, it also comes in hundreds of colours, styles and designs. From necklaces to rings and everything in between, this kind of ‘cheap jewellery’ has been popular since the early 20th century and has been used by many fashion designers like Coco Chanel, who introduced it to ‘complete the costume’ in fashion shows. Much like clothing, costume jewellery went through different stages of designs that were trending at a particular time. During the 1920s, Art Deco was the craze and the jewellery reflected that. Art Deco jewellery was all about sharp geometric and symmetrical shapes, long pendants, bangle bracelets, cocktail rings, and elaborate accessory items like cigarette cases and holders. The ’30s brought with it the Retro period, where the jewellery started to mix natural materials with plastics. The look was all about glamour, elegance, and sophistication with a Hollywood flair and saw the jewellery to have themes like flowers, bows, horse motifs, military influence, and ballerinas. The Art Modern period surfaced in around 1945 after World War II. Jewellery became a lot more tailored and a little less bold. The look became a mixture of lavish looking jewellery like charm bracelets and jade and opal stones being used and chunky bracelets, poodle pins, Christmas tree pins and other Christmas themed jewellery. Today’s costume jewellery can be seen to have a mixture of all the mentioned periods. The current trend is to mix and match from different styles and eras to create your own look. Stackable items are also very desirable, with rings and bangles being favourites to stack and mix to your personal style. Headbands faded away for a while but are set to be back this year, from crystal adorned to beaded, dainty to statement pieces. If you are looking for a necklace, turn to dark blues and blacks this year, with a hint of chains or buckles to add a bit of flair. The days of the choker are gone and so are the days of long, chunky necklaces. It’s all about the collar bone length necklaces now. They demand attention and are face-framing too. Necklaces are leaning away from geometric and chunky and more towards thin chains with single pendants on them, a more toned down and sophisticated look. Rainbows on your ears is what you want this year. Statement earrings are all about colour at the moment so grab your favourites in as many colours as you can. And while you’re at it, no need to have a matching set anymore, as single or different earrings in each ear are trending on the runways. Rose gold looks are also taking over, knocking out the silver era and introducing a soft, dainty look to your accessory draw. Many brides choose to wear costume jewellery for their wedding day as it is less expensive and makes a strong statement. When wearing costume jewellery for your wedding day, you do need to be careful not to let the jewellery make a bigger statement than your dress! Costume jewellery is a great accessory for semi-formal and casual events because it has more variety and is more accessible, so get your favourite jewellery and start mixing and matching!

Celebrate National Champagne Week

F

21

Battle of the Bubbles

lutes and coupes at the ready, National Champagne Week is slowly bubbling to the surface; the 5th annual celebration since Searcys founded the event in 2011 will once more be toasted for a delicious week-long festival of our capital’s thriving Champagne scene. Hospitality experts and connoisseurs of all things bubbly, Searcys is delighted to announce that they will be hosting a week long Champagne Safari to include a glitzy Opening Party on Saturday 1st October, in collaboration with a selection of major Champagne Houses and drinks partner Sipsmith. Along with tastings punctuated by delicious gastronomic pairings and expert master classes, during the week Searcys will celebrate the diversity of Champagne. Through a variety of approachable and accessible experiences with a focus on France, they will take guests on a journey through the Champagne region at different events across the city. Guests will be given their own Champagne Passport where they can stand to win prizes throughout the week whilst sipping on Champagne. In the UK we’ve long been the most avid consumers of Champagne and now there has never been a better time to raise a glass. While the eponymous region of France is, strictly speaking, the birthplace of Champagne, the word on the grapevine is that England’s very own vineyards are now having their moment in the spotlight. This year, legendary Champagne houses Taittinger and Pommery have announced that they will both be taking to England's verdant countryside to start producing their sparkling concoction – making the most of England’s increasingly temperate climate and chalky soil. So while the northeast of France is the only region that can carry the esteemed title, it would appear that the picturesque counties of Hampshire and Kent are holding their own in the battle of the bubbles. With this in mind, Searcys is putting Champagne enthusiasts to the test with a week of events that will both excite and challenge even the most discerning of taste buds – from master classes with top chefs to sampling with engaging sommeliers, through to an informal quiz and fizz night – this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate France and England’s love of Champagne. And for the bubbles aficionado, regardless of where it is made, no excuse is needed to join in the prestigious festival of fizz. Burgers and Bubbles, champagne cocktails and pairings with indulgent chocolates; it’s all on the menu this October. As if a reason is needed… "I drink champagne when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it – unless I'm thirsty." – Madam Lilly Bollinger

Looking for the perfect place to start your happilyever-after? We’ve carefully chosen four of our most romantic destinations, ideal for honeymooners. From laid back Caribbean vibes to ultimate shipwrecked-instyle seclusion in the Maldives… where will your honeymoon take you?

Honeymoons in the Caribbean You’ll find a range of couples-only resorts in the Caribbean, making this beautiful part of the world a natural honeymoon destination. One of our favourites is Rendezvous in St Lucia, an all-inclusive resort where you can choose to add-on romantic experiences, such as a candlelit dinner on the beach, sunset catamaran cruise or special honeymoon massage. The staff will even ready your room for the ultimate night-in, turning on soothing music, decorating with a sprinkling of rose petals and lighting all the candles… with the bonus of breakfast in bed delivered the following morning! In Antigua, our first choice for honeymooners would be a stay at Hermitage Bay. The accommodation is split into separate cottages, which are shrouded in vegetation for complete privacy. Set into the hillside, the views are to die for. There’s a clue in the name ‘hermitage bay’; it’s miles away from anywhere – perfect for getting away from it all (quite literally). The seashore is unspoilt, with powdery sands stretching out into perfect turquoise waters. If you’re after romantic seclusion, there can’t be a better place to stay in the whole of the Caribbean. Enjoy an intimate candlelit meal for just the two of you, on the beach A candlelit dinner is quintessentially romantic. Take it up a notch with 5 courses of indulgent cuisine accompanied by the sunset, champagne and the feeling of your toes in the soft white sand. Romantic meals don’t come much more special than this…

Honeymoons in Thailand Thailand has so many different regions that even if you’ve visited before, there’s so much to explore. Make your honeymoon even more memorable by staying in multiple places around the country. Experience the breathtaking countryside and culture in the north, the picturesque islands of the south and the hustle and bustle of Bangkok – all in one holiday. Picture yourselves strolling hand-in-hand along an 11km white sandy beach with tranquil turquoise waters lapping the shore, and acres of lush tropical rainforest forming the backdrop. If this sounds good to you, the beautiful setting is just one of many reasons why The Sarojin in Khao Lak is an excellent place to stay on your Thai honeymoon. One of the resort’s highlights are the private dining experiences – from a candlelit dinner by a jungle waterfall or a private beach BBQ, there are plenty of romantic settings to choose from. For a real once-in-a-lifetime meal, hop aboard their luxury yacht to a private desert island (accompanied by a waiter), where you’ll be able to sample fresh fish dishes in a breathtaking setting under the stars.

Honeymoons in the Maldives A holiday to the Maldives, with the soft white sands and turquoise waters found almost nowhere else on earth, is often considered the ultimate romantic escape. Surrounded by nothing but unspoilt ocean, you’re really and truly away from it all in the Maldives. If you can, upgrade to a Water Villa – especially one on the sunset side of your chosen island – they really have the wow factor! They’re perfectly positioned for amazing views of the sun disappearing into the Indian Ocean at the end of the day, illuminating the sky with awe-inspiring shades of red, orange, yellow and pink. Can there be a more romantic backdrop?

Experience a Maldivian Bath Ritual There’s no better way to relax at the end of the day than a long soak in a hot bath. They take that feeling to a whole new level in the Maldives. Imagine returning to the comfort of your villa after a hard day at the beach, to find your bathtub has been filled with warm water, aromatic oils and petals with candles lit everywhere. Not to mention that the open air nature of many Maldivian bathrooms means you can watch the stars twinkle above you… bliss! Discover your inner Robinson Crusoe with a Castaway Experience to a private island Imagine a desert island, and you’ll probably envisage a small sandy patch with a few token palm trees surrounded by crystal clear turquoise waters. The reality of this vision exists near to JA Manafaru. They own a separate, small, private uninhabited island, where you can choose to be stranded with your loved one in complete isolation from the outside world. A unique castaway experience, staff will drop you off by boat and pick you up at sunset (or even the next morning, if you’re feeling intrepid). Nestled amidst the palm trees, there is the luxury of a small hut with a bed, showers and a loo – together with a hamper containing essential supplies, and a walkie-talkie so you can radio the hotel if you want to be picked up prematurely!

Mauritius frequently tops lists of the world’s most romantic holiday hotspots – for good reason! Butler-run baths, private pools and helicopter transfers are all on the cards. There’s ample choice on the accommodation front, with exquisitely beautiful beaches and a cultural attitude that places a big emphasis on hospitality; partly why everyone comes back from Mauritius raving about the service. Picture yourself gently swinging in a hammock nestled between two palm trees, caressed gently by the prevailing breeze, whilst your loved one calls over a waiter to order a mojito. It’s hard to imagine a more idyllic setting. Feel your heart-rate slow as you slip through tropical gardens on the way to the spa; tantalise your taste buds with some elegantly prepared pan-seared scallops, or charter a catamaran for the evening and go in search of dolphins. See the island from a different perspective and enjoy sundowners as you watch the sky fill with beautiful sunset hues – an enviable photo opportunity that’ll leave a lasting memory of your honeymoon in Mauritius.

Iberian Peninsula special:

A guide to the most wonderful beaches in Spain and Portugal

28

the riverside journals

The Iberian Peninsula, comprising Spain and Portugal, has been a popular tourist destination for generations and its popularity shows no signs of abating, as increasing numbers of people head to its sunny shores from the UK every year. It’s easy to see why – with nearly 7,000 miles of shoreline between them, these countries boast some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Tourists are spoiled for choice, so it can be hard to pick the best beaches to visit. With this in mind, the luxury travel experts at Voyage Prive have created this guide to the best beaches on the Iberian Peninsula to make planning your next trip easier.

Best beach for surfing –

Mundaka, near Bilbao, Spain Reputed to have Europe’s longest and best left-breaking wave, Bilbao has been a mecca for surfers since the late 1960s. Not for beginners, this is the perfect beach for pro surfers or those who want to play with the big boys. The yearly “Billabong Pro Mundaka” takes place every May and draws tourists and surfing pros from around the world. The town of Mundaka itself is also great for exploring, with a historic town centre where all the houses are medieval and face the sea.

Best beach for families –

Praia da Rocha, Lagos, Portugal The beaches in the Algarve, located in the south of Portugal, are among the best in the world. For families, we particularly recommend Praia da Rocha. This beach tends to be less busy, so there’s plenty of space to build sandcastles and play freely. There are also some amazing caves to explore in the surrounding rocks. If the kids get bored of the beach, the nearby Portimao Museum has fascinating historical exhibitions and is very child-friendly. There are also many reasonably-priced food options around for lunch.

Best beach for romantic walks –

Costa de Caparica, Lisbon, Portugal At 30km, this is the longest beach in Portugal, so your romantic walks can last as long as you want. The pristine white sands beg for exploration, and there’s lots of lovely little cafés, bars and restaurants serving local food and wine. During the high season of July and August, you can pick up souvenirs and gifts at one of the seasonal arts and crafts markets. In the summer, the west-facing beach plays host to spectacular sunsets, providing an idyllic end to the day.

Best beach for sunbathing –

Bolonia Beach, Province of Cadiz, Spain Cadiz is bathed in sunshine for 3,000 hours of the year, making it the perfect spot for sun-worshippers. Bolonia, a secluded cove of golden sand sheltered by a 30-metre high sand dune, is the best place to make the most of the rays. Relax with a book on the beach and punctuate your day with dips in the crystalline Atlantic waves and visits to one of the wooden chiringuitos or beach bars. Visit during the week for fewer crowds, and stop by the Roman ruins to the north of the beach on your way home.

Best beach for escaping the tourist crowds –

Playa del Silencio, Oviedo, Spain

the riverside journals

With a name that literally translates as Beach of Silence, this is the ideal beach for peace and quiet. One of the most northerly beaches on our list, it owes some of its solitude to only being accessible by car from the tiny village of Castañeras. The high cliffs which surround the beach block out all sound except waves and birds, and also make a great place for climbing and exploring. There’s plenty to see for those with snorkelling equipment, but definitely bring a wet suit as the water can be very cold even at the height of summer. There are no amenities or restaurants nearby either, so pack your own towels, chairs and lunch.

W

hen luxury automotive specialist Alex Prindiville struggled to find a suitable property to buy near his Limehouse Marina supercar showroom, he came up with a revolutionary solution. Alex gave up his search for bricks and mortar and instead commissioned master boatbuilders to construct a floating apartment – a fabulous new-build, 1,000 sq ft, two-bedroom luxury dwelling, delivered within four months of order. Alex was so pleased with the result that he founded Prindiville Marine http:// www.prindivillemarine.com. With the apartment – now moored in St Katherine’s dock – having proved a resounding success, Alex is convinced he’s hit upon a groundbreaking residential concept, and is now taking orders for the vessels from customers. “I always thought the idea of living on a boat was romantic, and my thoughts originally turned towards a Sunseeker-type luxury yacht,” Alex explained. “But whilst they look very sexy, I quickly realised they are designed for the sea, and internally the amount of space and layout doesn’t make them practical to live on. “I also looked at traditional large barges and houseboats, but found that everything on the market was a bit tired and not particularly well thought out. So I found the best boatbuilder in the UK and embarked on producing this wonderful vessel.” Constructed with a hand-crafted ‘Sheffield Keel’ hull, each wide-beam vessel is built as a completely new, purposebuilt unit. The configuration provides a fully functional kitchen, fully functional bathroom, living room and two bedrooms. It comes with central heating, hot and cold water, telecommunications systems and all the modern conveniences one would expect from a luxury apartment. Some of the optional extras include a log fire and additional television units. The design is fully flexible; one of the bedrooms can instead be built as an office – one customer has even used the second bedroom space for a recording studio – whilst the interior, including furnishings, worktops, kitchens and flooring, can all be customised. Outside, the boat is equipped with an al fresco dining area at the rear of the vessel and a sun-deck area on the roof. A propulsion unit can also be fitted for those who wish to experience the adventure of travelling Britain’s picturesque canals and waterways. It cost Alex £300,000 fully furnished, a fraction of the price he would have paid to buy an apartment in central London. Permanent mooring costs are typically £10,000-£13,000 or you can buy a £700 annual canals mooring licence, which allows you to stay in the same location for two weeks at a time. “The floating apartment offers some experiences that simply cannot be captured with traditional bricks and mortar,” Alex explains. “When you’re standing inside, the port-holes and water are at eye-level. The light shimmering off the water is magical, and you’ve got a fantastic outside living area for entertaining guests. “You can live in some of the most desirable parts of any city with a waterfront, with the freedom to go up and down the river or the canals, and you have all the benefits of a luxury apartment. “The boat has a real holiday feel to it. It is very romantic, a great way of destressing, and the kids love it,” he adds. What makes it unique is the way onboard space and storage has been maximised – a focus Alex admits proved tricky during the design stages. “My background is in manufacturing and engineering, and I was personally involved in much of the design of the boat,” he said. “How do you maximise the storage space on a boat that has approximately 1,000 square feet? It was very difficult and very challenging, there were hours and hours of reconfiguring the design. Yet from that process we have managed to develop an apartment that is incredibly spacious.” Whilst Alex himself uses his apartment as his primary residence, he says the boat is an ideal solution for anyone looking for a city crash-pad, parents with a child heading to university – one couple are buying a boat for their teenage daughters to use as undergraduates – or simply anyone with a love of the water. “We’ve had huge interest from a wide range of people – young professionals, retired couples, divorcees, students and romantics. The demographics really are very varied,” he explained. Prindiville Marine will initially look to supply 15 apartments a year, and already has plans to produce a number of other versions of the boat. This includes a sea-faring version for longer trips, and a larger vessel with 3-4 bedrooms. “Urban property prices continue to escalate, especially in the most desirable waterfront areas. The Prindiville Marine floating apartment offers you a bespoke, luxury lifestyle at an affordable price, and we look forward to continuing to make waves within the property industry with our luxury houseboat offering,” Alex said.

x Brexit & The Illusion of Democracy

Well that was a lively month! The FTSE plummeted, sterling plummeted and various open ended property funds halted redemptions. Panic in the streets, mob rule – The end is nigh!

Except World War III has not erupted. The Conservatives quickly found a new prime minister and the austerity budget we were promised by Osborne was immediately shelved by him – what a surprise! Indeed I could list the lies from both camps in the run up to the referendum – £350m a week to be given to the NHS anyone??? But frankly I don’t have the energy. The entire process was a disgrace. Nevertheless the result came as a surprise to most in London, so we saw an immediate panic in the stockmarkets and various scare stories about the property market fuelled by some property funds halting redemptions.

But this is not a repeat of 2008.

There have been buyers for the assets as shown by Aberdeen Asset Management’s sale of their Oxford Street building for £124m. Now I have been using commercial property to highlight a point. It doesn’t matter what market we are talking about; it could be property, classic cars or stamps. They all have one thing in common: human nature. And humans, on the whole, are not logical. We are driven far more by our emotions than we are by facts. Even worse, we often mistake opinions for facts or look at the wrong facts when making decisions – this is why Bernie Madoff succeeded in duping so many people. You can see from the FTSE 100 & S&P 500 that there have been some fairly wild gyrations which can have nothing to do with the underlying value of the companies in the indices. It is fear and greed. So let’s go back to the property market. Prices are definitely down. However, there is not a liquidity issue – there are very few forced sellers and very few good quality properties available at prices that I think are attractive. But then I often say this in a strong market too. The difference is that in a strong market even the average and poor properties will be in demand. The good news is that there are opportunities and we have agreed favourable terms on four excellent properties for our members since the Referendum. Indeed we have also been extremely busy taking on new members as both UK and international buyers see this as an opportunity. There are two underlying reasons for this: Sterling weakness coupled with lower prices The belief that London will still be a global powerhouse in 50 years

And if you believe that London will continue to be a global super city, then now is an opportunity just as 1998 (and the market turmoil then) also proved to be an opportunity, despite the massive upheaval and negative press at the time. You must, however, be very selective and have a very clear understanding of what prices are doing in your target market.

Make an impression with innovative art This unique take on mosaic art fuses ancient painting techniques with modern interactive LED lighting. Developed by artist Ghizlan el Glaoui, these distinctive artworks are cleverly illuminated, allowing you to remotely change the colour and the light intensity depending on your mood or the time of day, resulting in a stunning look that’s reminiscent of glittering Byzantine mosaics. “My wish is to find the ideal lighting to enhance the portrait, in order to achieve an ever-changing image. The grid for the mosaic was created using the golden ratio’, which is the hidden maths behind beauty. It’s considered the most effective layout for the human eye and is taken from nature. It is also known as ‘the divine proportion’ - designers and artists since Rennaissance have used it.”

Born in Morocco in 1969 into an artistic family, Ghizlan spent much of her childhood in the studio of her father, the world-renowned painter Hassan el Glaoui. Often the subject of his portraits, she became his muse. With the inspirational and exotic surroundings of Morocco and France, for Ghizlan it was like swimming in a magic potion mixed with the rich colors of her father’s work, the heady smell of paint and linseed all around. From this world, ancient and modern, old and new, was born Ghizlan’s love of art and her unique artistic style. Ghizlan went on to study Arts at the Academie Charpentier and developed a style influenced by her father in the use of light and colour. Modigliani, Botticelli, Klimt and Da Vinci inspired her in the use of line and texture. Raised in two worlds, Ghizlan’s physical and cultural duality found their artistic expression in the fusing together of the physical and the metaphysical, the outer and inner self. The physical body serves as a bridge or conduit to a more powerful force, the inner light and aura that are the true self. To this end, Ghizlan has devoted considerable attention to the natural essence of the female form, the sacred feminine within. Her subjects share timeless features and beauty that bare an intuition, wisdom and solemnity while revealing their complexity. She has a gift for capturing the sacred female form, exposing the strength, enlightenment and symbolic good in all. www.ghizlanelglaoui.com

Henri Barande

O

ctober 2016 will be the first time to see the remarkable work of French-born artist Henri Barande in the UK. Both intriguing and stimulating, Henri Barande’s artistic practice is as unique as it is compelling. Barande’s creativity first emerged when he was a child living in Tunisia, where he played among the ruins of the ancient Phoenician capital of Carthage. His practice is dedicated to exploring the dialogue between life and death, the found and the fabricated, which led to the creation of a world of miniature forms and figures. These small sculptures have since been buried at an undisclosed location or destroyed by his own hand, carefully and purposefully concealed from view. From this seeming act of destruction has arisen a stunning array of monumental paintings, many of which employ motifs from the “lost” sculptures. Distant and yet intensely absorbing, the luminous canvases initiate a provocative dialogue between the abstract and the figurative. The Henri Barande exhibition will consist of an installation of 45 canvases and 25 sculptures. Despite the fact that his practice is prolific, until recently Barande has sought anonymity. For 50 years he kept his work private so that his achievements remain largely unknown to the art establishment. His works are unsigned, undated and untitled, and they are not for sale. This freedom from commercial considerations has allowed him to pursue his artistic goals without compromise, to disappear behind his work and to live through it alone. Barande’s original decision never to exhibit his work, to conceal it from the gaze of others, even to destroy it, has allowed the artist an extraordinary degree of creative freedom. Twenty years ago the American curator and critic David Galloway persuaded Barande to share his extraordinary vision with others – first through publications, then through exhibitions. Barande will only show his work once in a single country and the Saatchi exhibition will be the only chance to see his work in the UK in his lifetime. Curated by eminent American art critic David Galloway, the exhibition is presented by the Violet Hour and sponsored by HB Collector.

Alongside the exhibition, a book exploring the artistic practice of Henri Barande including full colour reproductions of his works and a series of essays edited by David Galloway will be published by Booth-Clibborn Editions on September 8th. For the book’s 4,000 print run, each book jacket will be unique, with 4,000 individual covers based on Barande’s paintings and designed by Christoph Stolberg.

Images John d Green

I

n the spring of 1966, a British photographer embarked on a project to photograph the most beautiful women in the country. Birds of Britain, the seminal photographic book by John d Green celebrating the brilliant and beautiful women of the UK, was published in 1967. Featuring models, society girls, singers, actresses and debutantes, Birds of Britain was a celebration of Swinging London’s movers and shakers and went on to become an immediate mainstream success selling 60,000 copies, 20 times the original print run and went on to develop a cult following. Some of the images in this unexpected and exciting collection caused controversy when originally published due to their quirky and outrageous style. They are, as Green says, ‘a truly British phenomena, the most fabulous “birds” who put Swinging London on the map.’ This was a glorious explosion of everything Sixties London represented to the rest of the world and Green captured its very essence in these stunning, often bizarre and beautiful images. In October 2016, John d Green’s amazing photographs from his legendary, long out-of-print book Birds of Britain are to be exhibited for the first time. The photographer will also open up his untouched Birds of Britain archive, featuring some unseen images that are not included in the original book, for the exhibition at Snap Galleries in St James’s. The Big Book of Birds of Britain, a sequel to John’s 1967 classic Birds of Britain book, will be released in December. Birds of Britain stars Julie Christie, Dusty Springfield, Suzannah York, Mary Quant, Charlotte Rampling, Marianne Faithfull, Jane Barry (Birkin) and Viviane Ventura. It features Sandra Paul, stylish model who later became wife of Michael Howard; Jane Asher, then girlfriend of Paul McCartney; Martine Bestwick star of two James Bond movies; Hayley Mills child star, actress and daughter of the late Sir John Mills. Fans of The Smiths will recognize the image of The Champions actress Alexandra Bastedo, which appeared on the cover of their album Rank. Pattie Boyd, former wife of George Harrison and Eric Clapton, was the cover star of the original book. It-girls of the day including Honorable Victoria Mills and Jacquetta Lampson are featured and darling of London society set Mary-Gaye Curzon, daughter of the 6th Earl Howe and now perhaps better known as the mother of Cressida Bonas, longstanding friend of Prince Harry, is photographed wearing only black engine oil in a startling high-octane photograph. These black and white images capture the spirit of ‘Swinging London’, and pay tribute to a very special time and place and the “birds” who made it famous. Birds of Britain, 1st Oct-26th Nov 2016, Snap Galleries, 12 Piccadilly Arcade, London SW1Y 6NH. www.snapgalleries.com Book published in December.

3. Higher and Degree Apprenticeships

Not as far-fetched as it might seem – such degrees are sometimes called sponsored degrees. A new degree developed by The University of Chichester and Peter Symonds College in Winchester has produced a BA (Hons) in Insurance. The academics worked with Be Wiser Insurance to create the UK’s first degree in Insurance. Schemes vary, but this particular programme offers undergraduates a salary of £18,000 a year and covers tuition fees. Students are offered a management level job on graduation.

These are quite new and similar to sponsored degrees. Many universities are working in collaboration with businesses to offer such apprenticeships – covering all sorts of roles and industries. Early adopters include Airbus, Morrisons and Barclays. Sheffield Hallam University has been working with Nestlé to create the ‘Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship’, which will give young people the chance to become the next generation of business leaders. To find out more about Degree Apprenticeships visit The Student Room’s Apprenticeship Zone.

2. Study abroad Brexit might mean this option is not available for the full three years, but currently there are opportunities to study free (or very low cost) in; Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Austria, Greece and more – visit topuniversities.com for more information.

www.careerwiser.co.uk

4. A full fee scholarship Such scholarships do exist, but they’re a bit like an albino tiger…rare. A couple of examples include those offered by Newcastle University and London’s Goldsmiths university. This year Goldsmiths had 10 full tuition fee waivers – worth £27,000 each for Lewisham’s brightest talent, covering fees for three years. Use http://www.scholarshipsearch.org.uk to search for more of these.

5. Crowdfunding Crowdfunding means you are relying on the generosity of others, be they family, friends or absolute strangers to pay your fees. This radical route seems to be most successful if you have a fabulous back-story, ask for smaller sums of money and offer something tangible in return. One successful crowdfunding student, Sarah Atayero from Luton, managed to raise over £6000 from 210 ‘backers’ to help with her MSc at King’s College London – she starts this September.

Can you get a degree for free?

ews out this month revealed that graduates left their universities owing an average £41,000 and new research suggesting students’ financial worries are causing depression and drink problems is leaving some to ask, is a degree now too costly to contemplate? Well these days the average cost of three years’ tuition fees alone is £18,000. It seems a huge sum to pay for a higher education but English undergraduates paid an average £6,000 in yearly tuition fees in the 2013-14 academic year according to the OECD, (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). And now some universities in England are telling potential students their tuition fees will rise in 2017 - the first increase since 2012. Depressing enough but worse still new graduates in England face average debt levels of more than a third of the average mortgage, according to research from The Money Charity. It says this year’s graduates will owe at least £41,000 when they start repaying their maintenance and tuition loans. Worryingly but perhaps not surprisingly, being in debt is affecting students’ health. Research out this week from the University of Southampton and the NHS reveals student debt worries are causing depression and alcohol dependency. So is there another way to get a degree – for free? Here are five ways of doing just that.

Move over apps…. the Bots are coming

any Brits suffer from Nomophobia, which is the fear of being out of mobile phone contact. A whopping 38.7% of us would feel most anxious if we left the house without our mobile phone, compared with 23.6% for wallet and 37.6% for keys. Not that it matters. Thanks to Apple Pay and Android Pay, you really can leave your wallet at home and still spend to your heart’s content. You can even get ‘smart’ locks for your front door that use your phone to grant you access. This year, our smartphones are getting smarter than ever before. If you have an iPhone, soon you’ll be able to say: “Hey Siri, book me two tickets to Bridget Jones Baby on Wednesday night at the nearest Cinema,” (that is, if Odeon or your local cinema chain enable this functionality). Besides the cinema, you’ll be able to use your voice to book restaurants, taxis, send money to a friend and more. Alternatively, you could be chatting via Apple iMessage to your other half, wondering what to have for dinner later that evening. Rather than open the Just Eat, Deliveroo or Hungry House app you’ll be able to choose your food and order it all, within the message stream. Apps have made it much easier for us to complete tasks – from the very simple, such as getting from A to B, to the very complex like booking a holiday. People who have an Android phone are also able to do similar tasks – where they can use the Siri alternative, Google Now. This year, it’s all changing. Apps will still be there, but they will take more of a backseat role. All of this is because artificial intelligence is coming to our phones this year. Welcome to the new era of the ‘bot’. If you use Facebook Messenger, you will be able to ‘interact’ with a ‘bot’ to answer questions or take actions on your behalf. For example, it may message you and say, “It’s your wife’s birthday soon, would you like me to order flowers?” You can reply with a simple Yes or No, but you could also say, “Yes, but can you show me some options?” and it will come back with options. All of this is designed to help keep you in the same place. Rather than downloading and jumping around in different apps, you will soon be able to do many tasks from within a popular chat app such as Facebook Messenger or Apple’s iMessage, directly with Google Maps or Apple Maps, or by asking your phone to do a task. This is meant to make it easier for us to use our phones and to put a bit more ‘smart’ in smartphones. Ultimately, companies like Apple and Google want us to use technology in a smarter way. They want technology to be so good, we can do more, but spend less time using it and it seems as if the new wave of ‘bots’ may be the perfect way to help them achieve this vision.

Feeding Baby

I

53

the riverside journals

asked around what people made for their babies to eat. There were no hard and fast answers in the responses, apart from the obvious health implications (not serving food that is too hot, or that poses a choking risk, or is too spicy, or may make your baby ill etc.). There are hundreds of options for buying readymade baby food, which can be perfectly good, but these can be expensive, and of course they have to come from elsewhere, thus creating a carbon footprint, and you may not like what goes into them. So the primary feedback I got was that it was preferential to make food for baby at home, and preferably in one form or another from what the rest of the family will been eating too. You can of course adorn your domestic goddess/god hat and lovingly create recipes just for baby, but the reality of it all is that a lot of that lovingly crafted food will end up on your walls, or floor, or in the dog, so do remember that it is a baby you’re feeding, and not Fay Maschler. So, being mindful of salt and sugar content, if the food is relatively uncomplicated that you are serving for the family, then separate some and blitz it up for baby too. You can always adjust the seasoning for the rest of the family before serving. Similarly when there are leftovers, see what you can salvage by blitzing up and freezing for future use (note, always follow strict food hygiene rules when it comes to doing this, google if you’re not sure). You do have to consider that just like the rest of us, baby will prefer certain foods and textures to others. So before you go and fill up your freezer with what you think is a delicious recipe, make sure that baby is going to like it first. We waste millions of tons of food every year in the UK, and food brought in from supermarkets etc. will invariably come in packaging, a lot of which will end up in landfill. So we can help reduce this by making our own food for baby, and by doing so you know exactly what has gone into it, and you will probably save money too. Try the following simple recipes. When boiling root vegetables for the Sunday roast, remove potatoes, carrots and swede before serving to the rest of the family and blitz these all together for a root veg mash. Make a simple pasta sauce with tomatoes, courgettes and mushrooms, and before serving to the family, mix in with pasta and blitz it down for baby. Macaroni cheese is a favourite too I’m told. Freeze what you don’t use. Adrian Brett owner of catering company Grand Union Dining Den (GUDD) www.granduniondiningden.com also on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook

Behind the doors of a private GP practice

s founder of samedaydoctor, which has three walk-in London based clinics, my day starts as soon as I wake up at 6.30am. My wife (who works with me) and I turn on our phones and computers and collect the emails and text messages from overnight. As our website runs 24 hours a day, we get a lot of email enquiries and requests for appointments from the night before. Samedaydoctor makes it possible for patients to see a doctor as soon as they realise they need one. Therefore, dealing promptly with requests is key, so all enquiries are dealt with before our doors open at 8am. My wife and I live in a one-bedroomed flat near my consulting rooms in Wimpole Street to ensure I am always close to work and available to my patients. Samedaydoctor’s typical patient is neither rich nor famous, but a hard working professional who needs a medical consultation and cannot take time off work to see their GP. We will see an average of 60 people on a walk-in basis each day, and we do not turn anyone away. Doctors are an expensive commodity so most private clinics operate by only having one doctor available, but we have broken the mould and have several dedicated doctors and nurses on duty seven days a week, so waiting times are kept to a minimum. After dealing with emails, my next job is to review results of blood tests and x-rays and communicate them with the patient – as we work very closely with a laboratory we can get results done very rapidly, again making things easier for the patient. One morning I saw a woman with a sore throat on whom we took a swab and we were able to email her the result 3 hours later – much faster than a normal GP. We are also able to carry out more investigations than a standard GP practice and are lucky to have a scanning clinic next door. Today, I have already ordered 2 MRI scans and could look at the images online immediately after they were done. Our patients pay for the convenience of seeing a doctor at a time to suit them and quickly – we can do long consultations but our average consultation is 15 minutes. We work very hard under a great deal of pressure – it sometimes feels like an A+E service and seriously ill patients can walk through the door at any time. Therefore, keeping my life support skills up-to-date is essential. I am often in the practice for 13 hours but even after we close our doors we are still working. In the evening I have to check on the blood test results which have accumulated during the day and send these out – often we are working till 10pm. In this 24 hour world it is very difficult to switch off – you will never get an “out of office” email reply from me – even when we are on holiday we keep in touch and look after our patients.

These are my top tips for how and why you should care for your décolletage:

• • • • • • • •

Skin benefits from hydration so increase your oral intake of water to at least 2.5 Litres a day. Ultraviolet rays break down collagen to form wrinkles so use a broad spectrum UVA/UVB with a minimum SPF of 30 on your neck and décolletage. Reapply every 2 hours to keep this optimised. This is also essential for preventing skin cancer. An SPF foundation is not enough. Use products containing the antioxidant Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid). This will help to lighten, brighten and even out skin tone. Sleeping on your side can increase wrinkling, especially if you’re blessed with a generous bosom. So learn to sleep on your back, which also does wonders for the skin on your face. Use your cleanser on your neck and chest also. The skin here needs cleansing and priming too so this shouldn’t just stop at your face. The thin skin here is prone to redness and inflammation caused by sun damage, so a standard body lotion won’t help. Choose a fragrance-free, antioxidant formulation that will not only hydrate, but treat the underlying oxidative stress and redness. A build-up of dead skin cells will make your décolletage look dry, lifeless and accentuate lines and wrinkles so integrate mild exfoliants into your home skin care. Step up to a medical grade facial treatment for deeper exfoliation to include your chest.

Don’t Forget Your

any of us are now more aware of the risks of sun exposure and frequently wear sun protection to prevent Ultraviolet damage. What we may forget to do though, is apply this to our neck, chest and décolletage area. The late Nora Ephron wrote a book in 2006 called “I feel bad about my neck”, which made it to #1 on the The New York Times Non-Fiction Best Seller list. So clearly, beauty goes beyond, and below, the roll neck. The majority of sun damage occurs in our childhood, teens and early adulthood. As the skin on the décolletage is very thin, fragile and produces less oil than on the face, this can quickly show signs of sun damage, and become visible, sometimes earlier than on our face than we can imagine. I typically see this in my patients who enjoy the outdoors. From running, taking part in sport and the leisurely pastime of gardening, irrespective of the seasons, UVA rays penetrate through the ozone layer, clouds, conservatory, windows, our clothes and finally our skin, to cause cellular damage, textural change, pigmentation and loss of elasticity.

Making the most of the Olympic legacy, in and out of the water

atching elite athletes in action is always inspirational and this summer’s 2016 Rio Olympics was no exception. With Team GB fielding a 26-strong swimming team led by 50m and 100m breaststroke World Champion Adam Peaty, alongside 11 British divers including the nation’s favourite, Tom Daley, there was plenty to cheer for poolside this summer. But there is a serious side to pool-based activities too. Learning to swim is a life skill, and with the abundance of beaches, lakes, rivers and reservoirs throughout the UK, it can also be a life saver. At Better leisure centres across the region we offer a range of group and individual swimming classes for everyone, from three-month-old babies to adults. During late summer and early autumn our lidos – including Abbey Meadows in Abingdon and Woodstock Outdoor Pool – are great places to enjoy a swim in the fresh air, while the weather remains mild and the evenings are light. Our swim school programmes are designed to be as flexible as possible, with a range of lesson times, memberships, and easy payment methods. Our experienced, qualified swimming teachers undergo regular training and follow the Amateur Swimming Association National Teaching Plan for swimming, providing a structured, nationally recognised pathway to swimming proficiency. Swimmers who advance through our lesson stages have the opportunity to move into competitive swimming through a variety of swimming clubs and many have gone on to national and even international success. Swimming is great at any age and people swim with us for a variety of reasons. Parent and baby lessons develop a unique bond while building trust and helping to develop key motor skills and strength. Water confidence is a key skill that will not only keep your children safe, but also help them feel comfortable whether they are at the beach on holiday, or taking part in water related sports and activities. Health professionals claim that those who receive an early introduction to water are more alert with better sleeping and eating habits due to the regular exercise and social interaction. It’s also never too late to learn. We have beginners’ lessons for all ages as well as ‘one to one’ lessons for those who would like personalised coaching to help achieve their goals in the water. Not a keen swimmer? As well as pools, we have facilities for a host of Olympic sports like tennis, squash and badminton, plus opportunities for athletics, basketball and many other activities. We work closely with National Governing Bodies such as the Lawn Tennis Association, Badminton England and British Gymnastics to deliver a wide range of structured programmes for all ages and abilities. We are also proud to support athletes, from grassroots level all the way through to professionals. Our GLL Sport Foundation is designed to assist young talented sportsmen and women achieve their full potential by reducing the financial burden of associated training costs and widening their access to sporting excellence. We’re delighted that this summer seven of our Foundation-supported rowers from the Thames Valley, crossed the Atlantic and represented their country at the Rio Games.

What is teeth whitening? It is the process by which the discolorations of the enamel of your natural teeth are lightened – not crowns, veneers or fillings. If your teeth are heavily stained you will probably see a big change. If not the change may not be as great. How long will it last? This will depend on the patient and their oral habits. It should last several years. Is the treatment safe? Yes. Clinical studies have shown that bleaching under the supervision of a dental professional is safe for teeth and gums. Your dental professional will advise you on how to use the Pola Day and Pola Night take-home kits. How does it work? The active ingredient (either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide) is broken down, allowing oxygen to enter the enamel and dentin, causing the stains to be lightened. What causes teeth to discolour? There are many causes. Some of the most common include the consumption of highly coloured foods (beetroot, sweets, etc) and drinks (coffee, sodas, red wine); antibiotics taken in early years; natural ageing; smoking and trauma. Do all teeth whiten evenly? There is an overall whitening of all teeth. The biting edges are more likely to whiten faster than areas adjacent to the gum. Are there any side effects? Not for the majority of patients. However, some will experience temporary sensitivity (dull or sharp) on the teeth and/or gums but after several hours this will subside. Topical desensitising toothpaste or gel can be used. Abstain from carbonated drinks, citrus foods and beverages to avoid sensitivity for a few hours after treatment.

Teeth whitening is a highly effective, safe and proven way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without damaging any of the tooth surface. Great results can be achieved with just one “Power in Surgery” Teeth Whitening System appointment or within 7 to 10 days by using a “Take Home” Teeth Whitening Kit.

Are there any long-term effects? Dental professionals have been using peroxide whitening for over 50 years and there have been no known long-term adverse effects. After whitening, are my teeth more easily stained? No, the chances of staining your teeth are not increased once they have been whitened if you follow the post treatment care instructions sheet.

62

the riverside journals

Is it better for my dental professional to do the entire procedure or for me to take home Pola and do-it-myself? If you want a fast 30-minute result, let your dental professional perform Pola Office on you. If you have spare time, do-it-yourself with Pola Day or Pola Night. Do over-the-counter bleaching systems work as well? No. Without the expertise of your dental professional the trays are not perfectly fitted to your teeth and sensitivity can be a problem The bleaching solution is not evenly distributed, and saliva can seep in and dilute it. Many over-the-counter systems contain an acidic rinse which can remove significant amounts of the tooth structure and they usually contain a lower amount of peroxide.

Coach on the Couch

The Psychological Top Tips for Impact of Building Confidence The Brexit Vote Devise coping techniques

The Unemployment Factor In the last decade of a global recession, employment throughout the EU has become challenging. Many professionals lost their jobs and are still searching for work. This loss of identity of self through a career adds to those feelings of loss of national identity. It is also further expanded by the loss of the ability to self-govern based on the needs of the country rather than of the wider group of nations that form the EU.

The Visible Reaction As the levels of anxiety and stress over the issues mentioned above grow collectively within a nation, the risk of violence, aggression and reactionary behaviour escalates. As things become more tense and polarised, people are more likely to see themselves threatened at the core of their identity. Similar to the Hero Archetype in Jungian psychology, people strive to find ways to set themselves apart and to master the situation, being strong and taking the battle to the enemy. This allows people to fight for what they perceive to be a common good, even if it may mean entering into a situation that is, as of yet, completely unchartered territory for the very identity they are trying to protect.

Fake it until you make it Hold your head high and speak with conviction – no one needs to know you are quaking inside. Practise speaking with authority and you may be surprised just how much people will believe in you!

Feel the fear and do it anyway Often the biggest introverts can appear extreme extroverts when they need to. A little fear can be a good thing; harness it to keep you sharp – it will help you perform better. Challenging our personal boundaries on a regular basis keeps us on top of our game and stops us settling into being boring and predictable!

Find your passion What are you good at? When you can do something well you are much more confident talking about it. Find things you love – family, project, hobby, whatever your ‘thing’ is – enjoy talking about it. Harness this ‘passion built’ confidence and use it in other situations where you feel less self-assured.

Accept who you are Spend some time getting to know you. Understanding yourself, knowing your strengths… what makes you happy, or sad… selfawareness and acceptance of the person you are will empower you and give you confidence to be who you want to be and allow you to forge your own path to achieving your own personal Zen of happiness, contentment and serenity. Change begins by thinking, and then acting differently. Sometimes we can make those changes on our own; sometimes we need support to make change happen. Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, is available by appointment for private consultations and motivational meetings.

The change in the structure of the European Union is, in itself, a change in the way all Europeans see themselves in relation both their own country as well as the EU as a whole. In the development of the EU, it is very possible that moves were made too quickly and there was little consideration for how individual national differences would be impacted by the change. Rapid changes and decisions made by the European parliaments without an understanding of the anxiety, anger and frustration of the citizens of various countries within the EU triggered nationalism within countries. In some ways, this could be equated to tribalism with increasing emphasis not on strengthening the EU, but rather in setting a country apart as “my nation, my people, my country and my identity”.

63

The Root of Nationalism

Identify where you feel lacking in confidence and work out how you could tackle this. For example, something many of us struggle with is walking into a social situation alone. So, try this: When you arrive, scan the room for someone else also on their own, take the initiative and go start up a conversation with them – chances are, they are feeling just like you and will be really grateful of your efforts. Give yourself time limits and small challenges – say to yourself, “I will not leave until time x”. It is surprising how effective these small steps can be – you might even find yourself having a good time!

Fat Freezing: How to find safe and effective machines If you find the right Fat Freezing machine, you can get incredible results. Fat Freezing has become so popular that you can find it in nail salons for £75, or at high-end clinics for £1,000, and they all promise the same benefits: “Freeze and destroy fat permanently”. Fat Freezing is a non-invasive, safe and effective method to reduce stubborn areas of fat, as long you go to a reputable clinic with clinically proven technology. Cheaper options often lead to wasting time, money or ending up with serious injuries.

Anyone can buy cheap fat freezing machines off the internet, but you’ll probably need 4-5 treatments to see any results at all. These types of machines have no clinical tests, are usually made in China and don’t meet European health and safety standards. Ask the clinic what brand of machine they use, and do your research. Another machine known to be less effective is the “All-inone” with Fat Freezing, Radio Frequency and Cavitation. All three treatments require different mechanisms and are ultimately different types of technology so each one is compromised and you aren’t likely to get the results you’re hoping for, if any.

Top 5 ingredients that will keep you on top form this winter Winter can be a rough time both physically and mentally. Not only are the days shorter and colder, but we tend to let healthy eating slide whilst on a quest for warmth and comfort; a bummer for our health and skin. Vidhi Patel, Nutritionist at Minerva Research Labs, reveals which five nutrients we should all try to include in our diets for a better quality of life this winter. 1. Vitamin A: Clinical studies have repeatedly shown how beneficial the role of Vitamin A is, from general wellbeing, to boosting immunity. It plays an important role in key bodily functions such as healthy skin repair, bone health, brain functions, cellular regeneration, and immunity. Honestly, anyone who wants younger-looking skin should consume Vitamin A as it’s been proven to reduce wrinkles, fade brown spots, and promote smooth, supple skin. Luckily this antioxidant can be found in many everyday foods like carrots, broccoli, kale, spinach, sweet potato, beef liver, mango, papaya, apricots, peppers, eggs and squash. 2. Vitamin E: Vitamin E is found in abundance in oily foods, fats, and several oils. It has antioxidant properties that help protect the body from serious diseases. It’s especially good at making red blood cells, protecting cell membranes and DNA from free radical damage. It easily penetrates the vital membranes of the skin cells to protect against nasty free radicals. For strong, moisturised and soft skin during the cold weather, Vitamin E is a must. 3. CoQ10: It may not sound very natural, but CoQ10 is in fact an essential natural nutrient. It is produced by the body and used in everyday functions including cellular energy. CoQ10 has been found to be beneficial for those suffering from Parkinson’s disease and Dementia and plays an important role in fighting premature ageing. It’s especially good at fighting first signs of ageing by reducing fine lines, which are increased by dehydration from the cold weather. 4. Vitamin B6: Nicknamed as ‘Energy Vitamin’, Vitamin B6, helps the body turn food into energy. Vitamin B6 is a must for winter, as it plays an important role in building the immune system. Eat more liver, chicken, fish, wholemeal cereals, wheat germ, yeast extract and eggs, and you’ll be full of Vitamin B6! 5. Green tea extract: For good reason, Green Tea is a very popular superfood. It contains high amounts of antioxidants, enzymes, amino acids, and phytochemicals like polyphenols. It also includes B vitamins, folate, manganese, potassium and magnesium. Just one cup of good-quality green tea can make your skin produce less sebum, reduce inflammation levels, and boost your immune system. It can be quite difficult always eating a balanced diet and obtaining the freshest food to consume all of the nutrients listed above.

he Vineyard is a Relais & Châteaux 5 star hotel and spa, renowned for its impeccable service, 3 AA Rosette restaurant and awardwinning 30,000 bottle wine cellar. Hidden in West Berkshire, The Vineyard began life as an 18th century hunting lodge. In 1998 it was purchased by Sir Peter Michael, founder of Classic FM, who transformed the property into the sensational hotel it is today. Their philosophy is Eat. Sleep. And Drink Wine. They offer this experience – and so much more. From award-winning fine wine list and world-class cuisine, to the friendly, knowledgeable staff and exclusive spa, you will not be disappointed. Only an hour away from London, The Vineyard is a million miles from ordinary and welcomes each guest to experience this as soon as they enter the hotel. Guests are greeted by an iconic wine vault which showcases 5,000 bottles from both the New and Old World along with the award-winning wines from owner Sir Peter Michael’s estate in Sonoma County, California. Each of the 49 bedrooms and suites is individually styled and designed to tell you a story. Inspired by iconic wines from all over the world, you will find details such as luxurious marbled bathrooms filled with REN products, large flat screen televisions and personal Nespresso machines – just a few of the indulgent features that ensure you will enjoy a wonderful night’s stay. When visiting The Vineyard an absolute essential is to indulge in the award-winning 3 AA Rosette restaurant. From the art on the walls to the pianist’s repertoire, this is one not to be missed. Menus are inspired by new Head Chef Robby Jenks’s approach to create a simple but perfect dining experience, taking local, sustainable and seasonal produce to deliver a triumphant blend of Old World taste and New World values.

You can choose from the five- or seven-course tasting menu, which include spectacular dishes such as Cornish lobster, watermelon, black curry and basil; saddle of Oxfordshire lamb, potato press, pea, mint and balsamic. For pudding we highly recommend the coconut éclair, praline, mango and passion fruit for two – truly delicious. If you would rather enjoy a relaxed wine bar atmosphere where you can enjoy a few glasses of wine and a bite to eat, then choose the stylish surroundings of the California bar. Having recently been named in the Top 20 of The Caterer’s 2016 Hoteliers’ Hotels Top 100 and recently retaining the prestigious Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for a sixth year, The Vineyard continues an unforgettable year of achievements with the inspiring accomplishment of newly appointed Head Chef, Robby Jenks receiving an Acorn Award. Affectionately known as the 30 under 30, the Acorn Awards are celebrating their 30th Anniversary and have sought to recognise the brightest prospects in the hospitality industry. One of the top wine hotels outside of London, The Vineyard is dedicated to providing each guest with an unforgettable experience, whether you are a wine connoisseur, a wine novice or simply love a fine wine with your dinner. Having recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Judgement of Paris wine tasting that inspired The Vineyard’s journey, they have invested passion and knowledge of wine for guests to enjoy, which is showcased through the signature Judgment of Paris seven-course tasting menu. After an overindulgent feast of sleep, food and fantastic wines, you can relax in the exclusive Vineyard spa. This timeless sanctuary is an oasis of calm… soft candle lights, relaxing music and heated treatment beds are just a few of the added touches that help you leave feeling completely relaxed, recharged and ready for the day ahead. The Vineyard is one of the only 5 star hotels in Berkshire that has been awarded the prestigious 5 luxury bubbles spa rating by the Good Spa Guide. Also rated one of the best spa hotels in the UK by The Times, you can be assured that you will receive extra special treatment. This iconic destination fills you with fond memories and leaves you with a lasting impression. Zayane

O

pened this spring to instant acclaim. Critics applauded the transformation of traditional Moroccan cooking into groundbreaking and contemporary cuisine. Now, to celebrate the arrival of autumn, Zayane has conjured some spectacular new dishes for the cooler months. The star of the main course menu, Tagine Maghdour is an elegant twist on a classic once served at Moroccan wedding feasts. Melt-in-the-mouth lamb pieces are slow-cooked in a rich and hearty olive oil-based sauce. Served in an individual claypot it makes for the perfect cold-weather comfort food. Next, a locally sourced short rib of Sussex beef is delicately flavoured with authentic Moroccan spices; a touch of added sweetness from prunes and seasonal baby vegetables makes this dish a true taste of Zayane. Seafood lovers will adore how the autumn harvest of apples and hazelnuts comes together in a dish of sparkling-fresh scallops spiced up with a vibrant swathe of chermoula. Owner, Meryem Mortell has personally selected a wine list celebrating some of her country’s most sought-after wineries. From Les Celliers De Meknes, a 2014 Gerrouane Rouge Les Trois Domaines hails from the foothills of the Atlas Mountains nestling between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean. This soft, fruity red makes for subtle easy-drinking with gently spiced red meat or fish. Or how about pairing the robust red cherry and raspberry notes of the 2011 Carignan Riad Jamilben M’Tir with Zayane’s rich Sussex beef short rib. A perfect match. Indulgent desserts marrying the flavours and perfumes of Morocco make for a lavish end to the meal. Zayane’s interiors ooze Moroccan charm, with seating fabrics in burnished orange and luxuriant leather. Clever use of lighting from Moroccan pendant chandeliers, sconces and tea-lights are picked out in silver and brass. Terracotta and midnight-blue walls surround the atmospheric dining-space which is partitioned, here and there, with the use of decoratively-carved wood jali screens. With a whimsical nod to the restaurant’s British influences, Meryem has added an eclectic array of vintage Denby crockery, antique cutlery and an attractive mixmatch of quirky condiment pots to the dining tables. From its pioneering British-Moroccan menu to the highly eclectic wine list Zayane has changed the face of Moroccan dining in London for good. It’s not for nothing that it’s been touted as one of London’s most exciting new launches of the year. Chiswick’s NEW Cocktail Bar!

A little bird told me it’s cocktail time!

5 - 7pm Now Open for Weekend Brunch Sat & Sun from Midday!

1 Station Parade, Burlington Lane, Chiswick, W4 3HD chiswick@littlebirdchiswick.com / www.littlebirdchiswick.com

Pizza is a simple dish, using just a few ingredients – therefore it’s essential to use the best quality ingredients you can.

The Little Bird Cocktail Method

Take a mixing glass, add 12.5ml of fresh lime juice, 12.5ml of gomme (which is ordinary white sugar syrup), 50ml of Little Bird’s own infused ginger and vanilla pod

At Firebrand we use Caputo flour from Naples – but any strong 00 flour will do. For the dough you’ll need:

infused Caribbean Dark rum,

1kg flour 2 x 7g sachets of yeast 650ml lukewarm water 1 tablespoon of fine sea salt

(Blackcurrant liqueur mainly produced in Burgundy, France),

Pile the flour onto a clean work surface and make a well in the middle.

When it’s nice and chilled, strain it into a glass and garnish

Add the yeast and salt to the lukewarm water and mix with a fork. Pour the liquid into the well, mixing the flour with the fork. When all the flour and the water is mixed in, use your hands to exercise the dough, kneading it back and forth before rolling into a ball. Put the dough into a floured bowl and cover. Leave for a few hours – overnight is ideal, but you can use after an hour. Then cut into 8 portions, setting aside 7.

Serve with a shot of prosecco or champagne.

12.5ml of Crème de Cassis 25ml passion fruit purée, and 75ml pineapple juice, add a scoop of ice and shake. with half a passion fruit and blackberry.

Sit back and enjoy.

Preheat the oven to 220. Roll out one portion of dough 12 inches (about 30cm) in diameter using your hands in a circular stretching technique or using a rolling pin. For the tomato sauce blend a can of good quality tinned tomatoes (we use San Marzano from Naples) and a couple of pinches of salt or alternatively use passata. Spoon into the centre of the dough and using the back of the spoon move around the sauce so there is a thin layer over the base. Tear a ball of good quality Mozzarella into chunks and arrange around the base. Add 4 or 5 slices of spicy salami. Add some sliced roasted peppers (these can be from a jar). Sprinkle some chopped chillies or chilli flakes. Put in the oven!

f you have a bottle that’s over 15 years old from top Australian producer Penfolds, then you can do just that on 30th September when the Penfolds Re-Corking Clinic comes to London. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, the Penfolds Re-Corking Clinic sees Head Winemaker Peter Gago and his team come to Haberdasher’s Hall (EC1A) for the day to visually inspect, then open (if necessary), assess, top-up, certify and recap collectors’ Penfolds wines. For the lucky ones who are awarded the authentic seal of approval, this is a rare opportunity to add substantial resale value to their wines. “After 25 years, the Re-corking Clinics continue to amaze and evolve, transcending all our expectations,” says Peter Gago. “The notion that every bottle has a story continues to reign true. As winemakers, it is so meaningful and rewarding to meet collectors and share their personal story of their wine’s unique journey.” Anyone signing up for the Clinic will also have the chance to meet and speak to the winemaking team, learn more about their particular wine, discuss optimum drinking windows and cellaring recommendations. Penfolds are the only winery in the world to offer this after sale service – it’s completely free to come along, but booking is essential at www.penfolds.com/ recorkingcliniclondon

8 smart ways to exercise at work

1. Take the stairs Any activity you can do while not sitting behind your desk is a bonus. When you get to work, have a meeting on another floor or are on your way out for lunch, take the stairs instead of the lift.

2. Coffee break leg exercise Sneak in some glute exercises every time you head to the kitchen for a coffee or water refill. Standing tall, balance on one leg and lift the opposite leg straight back. Keep the lifted leg as straight as possible, focusing on squeezing the muscles.

While reading emails, sit with your back straight and feet hovering just off the floor, place just your fingertips on the edge of your desk. Contract your core and use your abs to twist slowly from left to right. Try for 10 twists to each side, three times throughout the workday.

Hold your abs tight. Extend one leg until it is level with your hip. Hold it for ten seconds, then slowly lower it. Repeat this 15 times on each leg.

Champions Tennis 2016

I

t’s 1987; a 13-year-old boy sits at home in Queensland, Australia, watching in awe as Pat Cash defeats Ivan Lendl in three straight sets. Although a tennis enthusiast, this boy could have never imagined that he would grow up to be a World Number 1, yet this was to become a reality for Pat Rafter. Rafter recalls fond memories of first walking onto the Wimbledon grounds in 1992 as a qualifier, and walking onto Centre Court in 1993 for the first time. This was also to be his first ever match against Andre Agassi, a great challenger throughout his career, whom he defeated in both the 2000 and 2001 Wimbledon semi-finals, to reach the all-important championship decider matches. Whilst he recalls the subsequent finals as “great to walk out to”, becoming a Wimbledon Champion was never to be for Rafter, one of the few disappointments in his glittering career which saw him achieve 11 career titles, two of which are US Open titles. Now 43, you’d perhaps expect Rafter to be happily enjoying a relaxed retirement, but this is most definitely not the case. Since his retirement, Rafter has gone on to become an underwear model for ‘Bonds’ and a successful business man, all whilst raising a family and still playing tennis. This November, Rafter is set to play at Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall, the season finale of the ATP Champions Tour. Returning this year for the fourth time, and going for his third win at the iconic venue, Rafter has credited the tournament’s “unique atmosphere” as “special, exciting, historical and fun”. For Rafter the Royal Albert Hall is one of his top three destinations to play at, alongside Madison Square Gardens and the Sydney Opera House.

Rafter explains why: “I am thrilled to return to Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall and have the opportunity to play tennis in front of the British fans again. Through my years on tour, Wimbledon was a major highlight because of the amazing appreciation that the fans have for the sport and I can’t wait to return and help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Champions Tennis.” Rafter is most definitely out to win, and admits that he very much sees the Championship as “a competition”. He can’t wait to play alongside ‘Johnny Mac’ (John McEnroe), who plays “a million miles per hour” and Timmy Henman (Tim Henman), a “great fellow”. Is he scared that McEnroe might lose his temper like the old days? Racket-throwing? Shouting? “Yep; I love him!”

McEnroe too is looking forward to the tournament:

Pat Rafter, John McEnroe and Tim Henman will be playing Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall from 30th Nov – 4th Dec 2016. Find out more at www.championstennis.co.uk

“Every year I look forward to coming back to London and playing in Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall event, which over the last two decades has become one of my favourite stops on the Champions Tour. f you have ever come across media adverts from double glazing companies implying that their prices will be cheaper allegedly because they do not have a showroom, their products may well be cheaper, but ask yourself why? It could be that they only employ sub-contract fitters prepared to work for minimum wages, or may-be they are using cheaper window, door or conservatory products? For your own sake, do think carefully about the consequences of being unable to see the double glazing products you are considering buying displayed in a showroom before you order. If you cannot see what you are thinking of buying, can you be certain what the window or door or conservatory you will actually get will look like or will be made out of if you opt for the “cheapest” quote? Given the significant investment required when double glazing part or all of your property or adding an extension onto your home, it is worth seriously considering only dealing with a company that has a showroom containing wellmade high quality, properly fitted products, as you get to see what you are buying before you buy it. Also, if you do not get what you ordered, or the quality you were expecting, you then have somewhere easily accessible to go back to, as if need-be you’ll be able to compare what got fitted with what is on display in the showroom. For example, if you visit the Hazlemere Group’s High Wycombe 8,000 square foot showroom in Wellington Road on Cressex Business Park, or their Welwyn Garden City showroom in Hertfordshire on the Mundells Industrial Estate, you will be able see on display a wide range of UPVC, aluminium and composite doors in lots of configurations and finishes, various double glazed window systems, aluminium and UPVC conservatories, orangeries, roof lantern lights, bi-folding doors, solid roof extensions, as well as roofline cladding, plastic guttering, UPVC fascias and soffits etc. Having been trading since April 1985, most of Hazlemere’s experienced home improvement consultants have over two decades of industry expertise, and are on hand to give anyone who visits the showroom, or calls on 01628 879244 during opening hours, free expert help and advice, whether or not in the end they decide to buy anything from Hazlemere Windows, Doors and Conservatories. Most double glazing firms do not manufacture, but simply supply and fit. As independent manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Windows are not tied to any particular double glazing system or product, so are able to genuinely advise you what is the best solution for your particular home and for your specific requirements. Hazlemere may not always be the least expensive on the market, but, as with most things in life, “you get what you pay for”. They will not compromise the quality of their products, and pride themselves in their robust 10-year guarantee, not only that they will deliver it in a timely fashion when their dedicated service engineers are called out, but you can be reassured that they will be around to do so in future, given they own their entire premises in South Bucks, including their Head Office, 38,000 square foot Factory and Showroom. It is true that they have a large adjacent showroom in High Wycombe, but as it is already well established and paid for, it is not a cost that needs to be passed on to Hazlemere’s thousands of satisfied customers. Hazlemere see their showrooms, and the industry leading home improvement experts they employ, as essential parts of their customer service. Both are accessible six days a week – before and after purchase – with the High Wycombe showroom also open every Sunday 10am to 1pm. Given Hazlemere Windows, Doors and Conservatories offer a no obligation quotation and free consultation (whether at your home or in one of their showrooms at your convenience), why not take advantage of their decades of experience when choosing the right product and home improvement partner for your property?

Farrow & Ball launch three mesmerising new wallpapers inspired by the 1940s British craftsmen in paint and paper Farrow & Ball is celebrating its 70th year with a new collection of wallpapers inspired by the decade in which it was founded. We sat down with Charlotte Cosby, Head of Creative at Farrow & Ball, to find out more about the collection and the stories behind each of the designs. Can you talk us through the new wallpapers and the inspiration behind them? As 2016 is our anniversary year, I wanted to create a collection that celebrated the history of Farrow & Ball while embracing what’s to come. The collection comprises three new papers, Arcade, Gable and Enigma, which are all inspired by 1940s prints in honour of the decade we were established. Influenced by the art deco movement which characterised design into the 1940s, Arcade is a soft, romantic take on the classic curved motif. The beautifully tactile scallop design gently dances across the length of the paper, which gives it an inherently sophisticated feel. Depicting a charming rural scene of ploughed fields, picket fences and farmyard animals, Gable perfectly captures the youthful innocence of simpler times. The paper features an intricate mural design filled with playful details that captivate the imagination. Named after the encoding machine famously deciphered by British mathematician Alan Turing during World War II, Enigma is a beguiling and bold geometric design. The deceptively simple print encompasses a series of interlocking rectangles which stimulates the mind, making it perfect for a study or drawing room.

Farrow & Ball wallpapers are so recognisable – what makes your designs so distinctive? Farrow & Ball wallpapers are quite simply unique. All our papers are made at our factory in Dorset using our own environmentally friendly, water-based paints and traditional manufacturing methods. Each wallpaper design has a unique texture which is achieved by using a hand brushing technique to apply the background colour. The application of real Farrow & Ball paints means each paper can be paired with a shade from our thoughtfully created palette of 132 colours, to help create a seamless look in any space. The new wallpapers are available to purchase from Farrow & Ball showrooms and stockists, by phone on 01202 876141 and online at www.farrow-ball.com from 1st September 2016.

Wallpaper is enjoying a resurgence of late. What would you say has influenced that? Wallpaper has enjoyed a revival in popularity over recent years, and can be used to striking effect as an accent or to refresh an entire space. As people have become more confident in their use of colour, so too have they become more interested in the use of pattern and the introduction of texture in a scheme. The popularity of the feature wall has also encouraged a more adventurous approach to decorating, providing an opportunity to indulge in colour and pattern without the commitment of covering a whole room. Try Enigma BP 5505 behind shelving in an alcove with Vardo on a chimney breast and Wimborne White on the woodwork for a really striking look.

Bulbs

G

the riverside journals

ood gardening is all about good planning, and that’s why although it’s Autumn now I am writing about Spring bulbs, as this is the right time to buy and to plant them. We all know what a bulb looks like, just think of an onion, which is a bulb, although we are talking flower bulbs here, and specifically Spring flowering bulbs, as there are also Autumn flowering ones too. Most of us probably have some bulbs already in our gardens, which come up every Spring to surprise with a splash of colour, but are you really making the most of bulbs in your garden? Bulbs are great in pots or containers. I would refer to this use as ‘seasonal displays’. These are usually mixed with Spring bedding plants such as Wallflowers, Pansies, Forgetme-nots and Bellis. Their use here is twofold; most Spring bedding plants just offer green foliage through the early Spring, so some carefully chosen very early flowering bulbs can be planted with them to push through and give a burst of colour before anything else has started. I would be bold and bright here, they’ll be on their own amongst lots of green foliage so don’t be subtle. There are some great bright orange or red small Tulips that will flower in March, even pushing through snow to do so. Their secondary use in mixed plantings is when the other plants are flowering so, depending on your preference, you could select colours to either complement or contrast with the other blooms, and you could even plant some April flowering bulbs and some May flowering bulbs to give you two separate bursts of colour. Tulips are a garden designer’s favourite as they come in almost any colour that you may need for your designs, from pastels through to deep moody shades and then colours that just jump out at you. Most varieties of Tulips are, however, a little unpredictable about flowering reliably in future years. Tulips originate in the warm and dry climate of the eastern Mediterranean, quite a different climate to ours. Therefore, with Tulip bulbs only, I usually throw away the bulbs after they have flowered and buy new ones each year. This also means you can change your colour scheme every Spring! Daffodils, or Narcissus as they are known botanically, are probably most people’s favourite Spring bulb, and unlike Tulips they are suited to our climate and will multiply readily when planted out in the garden. So, whilst we are still on the subject of temporary seasonal displays, I will use the dwarf varieties of Daffodils in this way, so they do not overpower other plants with their size. These can also be the early flowerers, the Daffodil ‘February Gold’ lives up to its name, or they can flower later to mix in with other plants. With these bulbs I always replant them in permanent positions when emptying out the Spring displays. Tulips and Daffodils are not the only bulbs for Spring pots and containers, you could use any Spring flowering bulb such as Crocus, Hyacinths, Alliums and a personal favourite of mine, Fritillaries. When bulbs are permanently planted into garden areas, in order to flourish and spread, it is known as ‘naturalising’. Careful thought should be given to these plantings as they will be there for decades, and also it’s not easy to remove them and start again if you change your mind. Snowdrops and Bluebells are great examples of bulbs that naturalise, we’ve all seen them looking spectacular in huge drifts in woodland settings, and this is how we should plant up our bulbs for naturalising in our garden areas. If you happen to have great expanses of lawn to mow and maintain why not change some to long grass areas and plant up with similar huge drifts of whatever Spring bulb fills your requirements. If you have the space don’t think hundreds, think thousands, and all of one variety for the biggest impact, or if you want some variation have groups of single varieties. If you go for the long grass and daffodil combination remember it can be followed by perennial wild flowers, which will give you midsummer colour and attract bees and butterflies too. Now, back to Tulips, they also make great cut flowers, so buy some bulbs just for cutting, plant them somewhere in the vegetable garden, or even better under glass or in a polytunnel so that the flowers themselves are sheltered from the weather. The extra heat in an unheated greenhouse will give even earlier blooms. All you have to do is choose what colour and type of flower you like, and something that goes with, or contrasts against, your interior decor. Apart from cut flowers, bulbs are good in pots for indoor displays too, Dwarf Daffodils, Grape Hyacinths, Dwarf Tulips and Hyacinths all look good in pots, kept cold to develop and allow the roots to grow, then brought into the house when in bud. Grow in simple terracotta pots, or plastic pots to drop into more ornate containers. Hyacinths and some varieties of Daffodils will have the added attraction of filling the house with scent too. Of course, in the Spring you can buy flowering bulbs in pots or Tulips and Daffodils as cut flowers, but there’s something very satisfying about growing your own, and you can choose the exact colour too, so do some homework first and then go and buy loads of Spring bulbs – you won’t be disappointed. Happy bulb planting! Richard Richardlucasgardens.com

Two of our favourite actors, Robert Powell and Liza Goddard, bring their own charm and humour to this beautifully crafted comedy, Alan Ayckbourn’s first West End hit. Greg only met Ginny a month ago but is sure that she’s the girl for him and decides to ask her father for his daughter’s hand. He finds Philip and Sheila enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning in their garden but the only thing is – they’re not Ginny’s parents. As ever, Ayckbourn pokes fun at the middle class convention that prefers the social graces to confrontation, as the truth unfolds amid misunderstandings and mistaken identities. Swiss Luxury Spas

96 the riverside journals

Switzerland may be one of the smaller European countries but its spas are seriously special. The culture is calm and healthy, the air is clean and the scenery is seriously breathtaking. Caitlin Dalton, Editor at Good Spa Guide (www.goodspaguide.co.uk), says head to Switzerland for a relaxing, rebalancing and renewing break at these sublime Swiss spas.

Getting to Switzerland Switzerland is very close. Zurich is just over an hour away and Geneva is about 90 minutes by plane. SWISS, British Airways and Easyjet all fly to cities in Switzerland. The trains run on time and you can admire the snowy scenery from the windows of the Glacier Express train (www.glacierexpress.ch).

Badrutt’s Palace, St Moritz www.badruttspalace.com Badrutt’s Palace is a legend and a landmark. It was opened by Herr Badrutt in 1896 and still has a sense of Victorian grandeur. The spa is a delightful surprise. Take the lift six stories below the hotel and you step out into a cave with three small waterfalls. Suddenly the space opens out to a bright, modern spa. The huge glass-sided room with an oval 25-metre pool is the centrepiece of the spa. Swim through a lift-up screen to the outdoor hot tub, and soak up the view of snow covered mountains. There are heat experiences in each changing room, and shared thermal rooms in the main spa area. The aim of the spa is to bring a sense of wellbeing to guests, treatments have an Ayurveda theme, and ingredients are organic and natural. Don’t miss arriving by train – which takes you through the snowy mountains and the hotel has three vintage Rolls Royces to collect guests from the station in style.

Alpina Gstaad, Gstaad www.thealpinagstaad.ch Gstaad itself is quite small and very select; it has been home to superstars such as Julie Andrews and Roger Moore. The Alpina Gstaad is built into the hillside above the town to make the best of the mountain views. The hotel is beautiful and the service impeccable. You could get lost in the beautifully designed Six Senses Spa. The indoor pool is 25 metres long so great for lengths, or you can just laze in one of the two whirlpools. There are huge blocks of limestone at one end, with waterfalls running down the wall, so it feels like being inside an alpine grotto. There’s also an outdoor pool and separate sex thermal experiences are in the changing rooms. In the ladies’ there is a steam room, a sanarium, a hot tub, a cold plunge pool, an ice shower, and two experience showers. Don’t miss MEGU, a modern Japanese restaurant that offers ultra-fresh sushi made to order. Watch the chef creating tiny parcels of intense flavour.

Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues, Geneva www.fourseasons.com/geneva Geneva is in many ways at the centre of things. This is where the river Rhone starts, where world banks meet and the Red Cross was founded. The Four Seasons Hotel de Bergues is elegant and beautifully restored. It’s also in the centre of Geneva with views overlooking the lake to Mont Blanc. Spa Mont Blanc is on the 6th and 7th floors with a good sized lap pool on the top floor and windows looking out over the city. There is a distinct Art Deco feel to the design and the loveliest hammam with soft grey marble walls. Even the showers have sinuous silver handles on the front. The relaxation room is dark, quiet and cocoon-like. The petit spa is absolutely luxurious, with gorgeous views and very effective treatments. Don’t miss taking an evening swim in the rooftop pool at sunset when you can watch as the mountains are gilded with warm sunlight.

97

Silvaplana village nestles in a lovely sheltered valley just a few miles from Saint Moritz. Spend the day on the slopes then come back to the Nira Spa and warm up. You enter the hotel through the garage, a true sign that this is a snow heavy area! Once inside, the building is arranged so that large floor-to-ceiling windows give views of the valley and the mountains. The spa is a softly-lit haven on the second floor, with a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, foot baths and experience showers. Sit in the warm hydropool and look out over the mountains. Just outside the wet zone is a nursery slope for children learning to ski, so in winter you can watch little ones becoming proficient skiers, and maybe pick up a tip or two! Don’t miss the really very good massages – try the Alpine Journey which combines hot stones and a warm bamboo stick in a deep muscle massage.

The new dealership is located on Bruton Street, adjacent to H.R. Owen’s famous Jack Barclay Bentley showroom, and is the only place in the UK to view the new Bugatti Chiron. The Chiron is the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive production sports car, and the new dealership has been created to reflect this. The showroom design celebrates the brand’s heritage and future, with the legendary Bugatti blue playing a prominent part in the modern and clean styling around the room. Some of the pieces that visitors will be able to enjoy include scale models of the Chiron, and artwork that celebrates the brand. While configuring their dream car, customers will be able to relax in chairs from the Bugatti furniture range, specially selected from the recently launched Bugatti Home Collection. The chairs will give a taste of the sort of luxury that the owner will be able to expect from their new car, as they are made using the finest leather and blue carbon fibre, the same high-spec materials that feature in Bugatti’s cars. At the centre of the room, though, will be the car itself, as there will always be a Bugatti on display in the showroom. The Chiron is the quintessential ultimate super sports car: ultra-modern, incredibly fast, agile and powerful with a stylistically demanding design and the highest possible levels of comfort. It comes with a fully redeveloped 1500hp 8.0-litre turbocharged W12 engine that is 25% more powerful than the Chiron’s predecessor, the Bugatti Veyron. It gets from 0-60mph in just 2.5 seconds and is limited to a phenomenal top speed of 260mph. The styling is recognisably Bugatti, but the all-new carbon fibre monocoque has an aggressive look to it, with the eight-LED headlights giving the front end of the car an air of menace. Inside features soft, supple leather, beautifully-laid carbon-fibre with just the right degree of gloss and jewel-like instrumentation. A long, elegant and curving illuminated C-bar separates driver and passenger. Dr Stefan Brungs, Member of the Board of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. for Sales, Marketing and Customer Service, and Anita Krizsan, H.R. Owen Bugatti Brand Director, cut the ribbon to inaugurate the new dealership. Anita Krizsan said: “The Chiron is the greatest car in the world, and it is only right that it has a showroom that reflects that. We aim to deliver the most exclusive, most luxurious and most bespoke service of any car dealership in the world. “At H.R. Owen we are proud to have been chosen to be the only Bugatti dealership in the UK, and the first standalone showroom in the history of the brand in the country. This is truly a reflection of our standing as the premiere luxury car dealer group in the UK.” The new dealership will be open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday and by appointment only at the weekends. he Wool Fair will feature homewares, menswear, womenswear and more, and celebrates the very best in wool and wool-crafts from across the UK. Visitors can also expect a truly memorable urban street food experience with a select number of artisan food and drinks on offer all day, around London’s Famous Monument, which will also be open and offering one of the most unique Panoramic views across London for those climbing its 311 steps! Traders taking part in this year’s Wool Fair on Sunday 25th September include bedding from The Wool Room, Southdown Duvets, and Penrose Alpaca, luxury knitwear from Ross Barr, hand-crafted knitted homewares and kidswear from Crowns and Coronets, tweed clothing from Settlers Stores, heritage project OneHutFull, natural wool products from Romney Marsh Wools, knitwear accessories from Chelache, family run homewares business Chapman House, hand-made dichroic glass designs by Blissimore Designs and the people behind North Down Farm. This is the first year for this exciting new event, and is accompanied by the traditional London Bridge Sheep Drive, staged by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, where participants will drive their sheep across London Bridge in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and the Woolmen’s Charitable Trust. Former Formula One World Champion Nigel Mansell CBE will exchange his F1 car for a flock of sheep for his next drive as he leads the woolly beasts across London Bridge to promote the wool industry and interest in wool, wool products and sheep farming.

Hazell Dean started her career in the 1970s, and the emergence of electronic dance music in the mainstream charts in the Eighties saw Hazell achieve global success as the “Queen of Hi-NRG”. She has had hits, including Searchin’ (I’ve Gotta Find Me a Man), Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go) and Who’s Leaving Who. She has performed at venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and will no doubt go down a storm at Rewind South this summer. We caught up with Hazell at the start of the festival season. You have an exciting summer of festivals planned Hazell, including Rewind South at Henley-on-Thames in August. Have you performed on the festival scene this much before in your career? I do festivals every year. I haven’t done a Rewind festival here before. I have done it in South Africa, but I always do festivals all through the summer at various locations. The festival experience is great. At Rewind, you know everyone is going to be there because they like the nostalgia of the Eighties, so there is always a really good atmosphere, people dress up and they are just out to have a good time. It makes it really good fun! What was it like being part of the dance scene in the Eighties? Oh, I loved the Eighties! I was having a ball wasn’t I? I was having hit records; I was achieving things like travelling the world and having a fantastic time basically! Most of the time I was out and about all over the world. From 1983 to 1991 I used to travel to America for about a month at a time. I loved touring America; the big limos used to turn up and I was treated like a Goddess! It was just great fun. I even performed in the club with the glass dance floor from Saturday Night Fever! In the Eighties you were playing in places like the iconic Heaven, one of the first gay clubs in London, and you have always had a large gay following. How did that come about? Searchin’ (I’ve Gotta Find Me a Man). It was the gay anthem. The first gay club I ever did was Heaven, back in 1983, and Searchin’ had already been number one in the gay dance charts for about five weeks, long before I stepped on that stage. They were going crazy before I even walked on stage, it was absolutely fantastic, and I wanted more of it! That audience has been loyal to me throughout and vice versa. I do the Gay Prides every year as part of festival season. In the old days there was only one Pride in London, but now they are all over the country really. They’ve changed a bit now for me because some of the audiences are a lot younger and it’s definitely more family orientated these days.

Who was inspiring you when you started out on your career? I used to love all the Sixties stuff. I loved Dusty, and I’m a huge Beatles fan, Tamla Motown in my early days and we got into the Seventies and I was very inspired by people like Carole King, Joni Mitchell, I love singer-songwriters. I love Barbara Streisand, all the greats. I am also inspired by contemporary musicians now. On the pop side, I love people like Olly Murs, I think he is brilliant, he comes up with some great pop songs! I like music right across the board! What do you still have left to achieve, what are your ambitions now Hazell? I think I have done most stuff that I wanted to do and, now I have a family myself, career comes second in a way, but I do have a nice balance. I get out there and I am still doing live shows, still record, so I am very happy with what I have and, as long as I can carry on doing what I am doing, I am more than happy! A perfect Sunday now is being at home we go walking the dog in the park, normal things, nice things.
