River Road: 700 signatures obtained on Petition objecting to proposed erection of Airbnb on River Road garage site. More are needed and all Councillors urged to find more signatories. Likely to be a factor in May 2023 District Council elections.
Street Lighting: Andover lighting company asked to produce a steel design lamp that would replicate appearance of cast iron heritage lamps. Details would be available for Council meeting. Design hasn’t arrived but contact made with Petworth Parish Council who took over responsibility for 5 cast iron lamps and obtained quotes for public liability and accidental insurance in respect of assets and maintenance person responsible for them. Situation not comparable to Town Council as Petworth Parish Council only have 5 lamps with none on roadside. Request made to Insurers Zurich for public liability and accidental damage quote for streetlights. Unable to provide quote without re-instatement cost which was requested from WSCC.
Environment Working Group: Following Council Climate Change workshop 7th Nov, working group reviewed input generated by attendees and decided they’d focus on addressing issues of waste, recycling and ‘refilling’. Actions to be pursued:
1. Establishing a “Recycling Hub” alongside Repair Cafe in Norfolk Centre once a month. Would be launched as part of Sustainability Weekend (18th19th March). Hub would be opportunity for residents to recycle materials that go to landfill. Could be extended to refill centre, seed and plant exchange, clothing exchange and energy advice station.
2. Possibility of setting up a community compost station would be investigated.
3. Continue to campaign for green recycling bins. St. Philip’s School plan to create wildflower meadow at front of school. ACE and St. Philip’s propose to offer “satellite” “Repair Cafes” where pupils could learn to use tools and repair items. Working group to address WSCC’s continued use of toxic weed killer on Arundel verges and cobbles. arundeltowncouncil.gov.uk
