Steve Whyley, who lives in Storrington, is the chairman of the local group carrying out the Remap projects in West and East Sussex, he tells Sussex Local “We have a team of around 25 people centred around the Brighton area and we need more volunteers, offering whatever time they can spare, to help us ensure we can support as many people as we can, and to ‘make things possible’ for our beneficiaries. Our local group’s area of interest is along the south coast from Littlehampton across to Eastbourne, and northwards to Horsham. There are similar neighbouring local groups covering Chichester and Portsmouth, and in Surrey, and others right across the UK.”

The design process
Remap is a charity that helps people with disability to achieve greater independence and quality of life. Volunteers design and make bespoke equipment for people of all age groups and ethnicities, and varying conditions and disabilities. Affordability is not an issue since equipment is provided by the charity free of charge.
The charity focuses on providing equipment which isn’t readily available under NHS or normal commercial routes. It relies on volunteers with various engineering or practical DIY skills, or occupational therapy know how, or administration experience. There are 70 local groups across the UK, comprising around 900 volunteers in total, undertaking 3000 projects each year.

Steve explains the process further “Once the initial enquiry is received, our occupational therapy (OT) volunteer experts in the group review the needs of potential beneficiaries to make sure that the issues and requirements are understood. They often make first contact to discuss further before considering the practical or engineering skills to tackle the case. It is often the situation that standard and readily available equipment is not appropriate for a person’s specific requirements, which sometimes involves multiple conditions. A volunteer engineer visits to discuss the ‘specification requirements’ and agrees a plan of action with the beneficiary.

“We help people with a diverse range of ages and conditions. For example, medical conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinsons Disease, etc; physical conditions such as amputees, little people, and arthritis, or consequences of a stroke; issues like reduced flexibility, strength, and co ordination; wheelchair or bed / armchair bound difficulties.”

Whether a simple adaptation of a clothes peg to help a one armed person hang washing on the line, a modification to a standard wheelchair or rollator to suit a specific person’s need or helping a person with arthritis in their wrists to continue playing the piano, the charity does it all. Steve’s group in Sussex was set up in 1976 by staff and students at Brighton University, one of its original founders is still involved.

The poorer the soil the better as your dry tolerant plants will need to search for their nutrients and moisture, developing the long roots they will need to survive drought conditions. Make sure when you are preparing the bed, dig very deeply to give these longer tap rooting plants an easy passage.
Poor and stony soil is a bonus in gardens where you want to grow a wide range of ground cover plants with little maintenance. The gravel garden is a good op tion, suppressing the germination of weeds almost entirely. This balance between plant and stone is characteristic of Mediterranean landscapes. One thing you may want for a more wild natural look is for your plants to self seed, so your gravel needs to be thick enough to prevent normal English weeds coming up, but not too impenetrable that your self seeding plants can’t germinate.

Stachys byzantina offers excellent weed suppressant ground cover, with silver foliage and attractive summer flowers. Stipa gigantea, the large feather grass, is great for height and autumn seed heads. Eschscholzia californica and Nepeta nervosa ‘Blue Moon’ are sun lovers that add vibrant sea sonal colour. Jarman was one of the most important artists and gay rights activists of his generation, making ground breaking avant garde films such as Sebastian, Caravaggio and Jubilee. Since he died of an Aids related illness in 1994, his cottage and garden have become a site of pilgrimage for art students, architects and garden designers. As a young boy he was enthralled by flowers, he dreamed of a magical rose garden emerging from the arid shingle. His parents gave him the 1926 illustrated manual, Beautiful Flowers and How as an experiment. The area is one of the driest parts of England andhasn’t been irrigated but is well known for its display of drought tolerant plants. It is also well worth visiting the Scree Garden because it has helped many work out what to do. There is big collection of easy alpines mimicking the growing conditions of stony, mountain ous slopes.

The vehicle’s minimalist dashboard features a ‘plug and play system’ that enables fitment of different kits. The dashtop includes a system of holes that can take additional storage modules like cupholders or smartphone docks. Electric motoring for the masses
On the inside, the space features a large mounting bracket where the passenger seat should be. This space allows fitment of different modules such as a storage basket, child’s car seat or pet carrier, depending on personal needs. In addition, Fiat are offering the option to change seat fabrics so owners can personalise and update their Centoventi during ownership.
On the outside, the Centoventi is an evolution of the Fiat Panda city car. Design features include a boxy overall look with interchangeable plastic body and roof panels so owners can change the look to suit tastes. The nose features a multi bar grille, inspired by the original Panda, to show the charging status of the electric powertrain.
As noted by AutoExpress, Fiat are using the Centoventi to make electric motoring available to masses. When revealed in Geneva in 2019, the Centoventi had a battery capable of delivering a 60 mile range. I often find myself conveying the importance of resistance exercise, and this is because resistance exercise is repeatedly shown to have the most rounded overall positive effects for health and fitness.

You may be in the process of a divorce and wish to have a Will in place that specifies your children (or other family member) not your current spouse should inherit your estate entirely. If for example you have allowed someone to live with you, perhaps rent free or for very little, it could be argued that provision for them should be made via your Will on the basis that this arrangement made them financially dependent on you, when in reality you were helping someone out whilst alive but had no intention of them benefiting from your Estate when you’ve died. Jack received his marching orders after argument with the Colonel's agent. With utter dismay, the Long family had to vacate their cottage. Jack's mother then rented one of the dilapidated Mill Cottages close to the old windmill site (ironically also owned by Colonel Thynne).
38 Local History
During Jack’s army period, a herd of pedigree cows had been installed at one of the Muntham Farms. It later became one of his tasks to take the cattle down to and from Worthing Railway station when they attended shows.
Jack could recall how around 1903, when almost 6 years old, he witnessed the disused windmill being demolished. He also remembered beer being carried up Stable Lane from the Gun Inn to the thirsty workmen.
Twelve months or so on, Jack joined the army and left Findon once more. Following the cessation of hostilities, Jack duly arrived back and found work, this time at Gallops Farm. As a sideline he continued to break in any horses required.

One person who actually recalled seeing the old Findon Windmill at the east of the village was Jack Long. He was born in Findon 1897 and he died one hundred years later in 1997.
The Findon Windmill had been standing derelict since the last recorded occupier, Edward Weller, in 1891. After this miller's tenure the mill was a forlorn sight on the hillside, overlooking the valley and directly in view of Muntham Court. I believe that the Thynne family may have considered the dejected "industrial site" a blot on their landscape and this was the reason for its ultimate demolition.
The Mill Cottages were a disgrace and in a state of terrible disrepair by 1926 and the formidable Colonel was ordered to carry out renovations. Controversy was caused when he refused to do so. The scenario that followed was reported in the press at the time and readers wrote in to say they had no idea that a windmill had existed in Findon.
The Long family eventually moved from Findon to Pulborough when Jack was in his teens. One Saturday in 1917 Jack Long returned for a brief visit to take out a village girl he had set his eye on. During the outing he called at the Gun Inn with Harry John Gurd (a valet and chauffeur employed on the Muntham Estate owned by the Colonel Ulric Thynne). It was while they were supping their pints that Harry suggested to Jack that he could also work on the Muntham Estate. This was to be a turning point in Jack's career. He duly arrived at Muntham the next day, Sunday, to be interviewed by Mr. Sutton, the Farm Manager, and was promptly offered the position of cowman. For her finally accepted a position, Jack dared to speak up and tell the manager that there was also his father, mother and his brother, Harry, requiring employment. A suitable job was then found for his father, who eventually became a shepherd. Mr. Sutton promised that something could be put Harry's way later. This is how the Long family returned and settled in one of the Muntham Farm cottages. Jack started work as a cowhand, with the added incentive of the prospect of also breaking in horses. His varied duties involved driving a cart to Worthing to collect the coke and coal to stoke the mansion's boiler.
In the early twenties
One of the first residents to move into the newly built council estate in Findon in the 1920s were Jack Long and his young wife Emma. It took a while, but the Colonel eventually relented and Jack gained part time employment back on his estate, just a couple of days work on and off. This was mainly at threshing time, and again to break in the odd horse or two as required. Over the years Jack was still the holder of a key to the Muntham stables. Unfortunately, on one visit Jack arrived to feed the horses to encounter the foreman from Cobden Farm face to face. The foreman demanded the stable key be handed over. A heated argument ensued. It resulted in Jack throwing down the key and telling the foreman what he could to do with it. Thus, Jack departed from employment with the Colonel for the second time, and forever.
Jack lived at 14 Old Council Cottages near the Fire Station in Findon (opened in 1965), until he was 99 years old. He received a telegram from the Queen upon obtaining his 100th year and a party was held in Findon.

The Council’s small team of around 45 Cook Supervisors, Catering Assistants and Officers fought off competition from other councils and private caterers to scoop the top prize at the Awards for Excellence organised by LACA, the professional body for school meals.

A Worthing Olympian swimmer who represented Great Britain when she was just 16 years old has been honoured with the unveiling of a blue plaque. Angela Barnwell was just 11 years old when she took up swimming seriously with Worthing Swimming Club at the former swimming baths at Heene Road. She quickly turned into one of the nation’s most promising sporting talents and was soon selected at just 16 years old to race for Great Britain at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. There she made the 100 metres freestyle final and became the fastest woman swimmer in Britain into the bargain.

The TwinningWorthingAssociation (WTA) was due to visit our French twin town of Les Sables d’Olonne in the Vendée between 23rd and 28th of August to officially sign a new charter between the twin towns following their re organisation.
The new look Portland Road, in the heart of Worthing has been unveiled as a vibrant and encouragepublicwelcomingspacetopeople to visit, with comfortable seating areas, improved lighting, additional cycle racks and landscape planting. The development has been managed by Worthing Borough Council but funded by West Sussex County Council and Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.
Project Centre designed and led the project scheme, with the build by local contractor Landbuild Ltd.

The judge did not question the Local Plan’s designation of Chatsmore as a Green Gap and ruled the inspector did not give adequate consideration to its policies to protect open spaces.
Worthing Borough Council has won its High Court challenge against plans to build 475 homes in the Goring Gap. Mrs Justice Lang found for the Council against the government and developer Persimmon Homes when she quashed a decision by a public inquiry inspector to give the scheme at Chatsmore Farm the go ahead. She ruled that the inspector had not given enough weight to the impact such a large development would have on the setting of the South Downs National Park and the view within.

We have just moved to the area and forgot all about the MOT needing to be done on my son's car. They fixed a door that wouldn't open did the MOT and service and were brilliant, keeping me updated throughout the day. The best bit was the price. For that quality and efficiency I was expecting my bill to be huge, but they were so reasonable. I am definitely booking my car here too.
