SUSSEX LOCAL

Ashington Festival - 20th Aug 22

HELLO! August is traditionally the month when we try to slow things down a little. It feels like this month is different with no school (= less traffic) and many people taking things at a less frantic pace. Plus we have a final Bank Holiday before Christmas. The Late Summer Bank Holiday was introduced in 1871 to give us all a chance to make the most of the summer, and in particular for bank employees to attend cricket matches! It didn't always fall on the last Monday up until 1971 it took place on the first Monday of August. It was moved as it clashed with the traditional two week shut down that many companies operated then. In this issue: August events – outdoor theatre, festivals, open gardens; tips on how to find a plot if you’ve ever considered building your own home; health and wellbeing advice on Menopause; puzzles and things to win! There’s also an exclusive article on West Sussex Alternative Provision College, giving children excluded from school and poorly children the chance to learn. Until next month,

Kris & Jeff

212 Business Profile

Plan for the inevitable

Community Interest Company offering legal services in Arundel Making a will is something many people will put off, not wishing to think about later life and death. It is important to remember, however, that when a person dies intestate (without a will) the rules of intestacy will designate how the estate will be allocated and this may not be in accordance with the deceased's wishes and can lead to disharmony and acrimony within families. If cost is a worry then Sussex Wills CIC could provide an answer as Radford Chancellor explained to Sussex Local that they offer a range of highly affordable services including single and mirrored wills, trusts, Power of Attorney, Probate and legacy planning. Being a “not for profit” Community Interest Company means that 70% of profit is reinvested in their community interest activities. For those in financial hardship or with a terminal prognosis, a free will writing service is available. Radford is fully aware that some legal services are simply unaffordable to some low income families and he feels strongly that the establishment of this social enterprise will go some way

to address this inadequacy so that crucial guidance to complicated issues will become more readily available. Sussex Wills he confirmed are full members of the Society of Will Writers and Estate Planning Practitioners and are regulated by them. They aspire to their objectives of advancement, education and ethical standards within the Estate Planning Practitioners profession. In today's society, divorce, re-marriage, children and step children can have a pivotal effect on families so the importance of making suitable arrangements for the future is paramount. Outside of his business, Radford enjoys cycling, skiing, cooking and is an active member of the historic House Association. In Your Garden

Monthly gardening ideas & tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens

Creating a rose garden Rose gardens have been around for thousands of years, with mention of them in the gardens of Babylon and illustrations of rose gardens found in 14th Century BC pyramids. The main rose we use today is Rosa chinensis which was cultivated in China for display and for medicinal purposes for millennia. It wasn’t until the 18th Century that the Chinese rose cultivars came to Europe. By 1840, thousands of cultivars were available for sale. Today there are tens of thousands of cultivates from over 300 rose species.

Rosa chinensis

This your chance to add to this fragrant tradition and make your own rose garden! Over the last few years Glorious Gardens have been asked more frequently to create traditional rose gardens, as people are no longer worried about their old-fashioned reputation. Especially with new rose cultivars, interesting underplanting and contemporary plant combinations, a rose garden can be a very fresh addition to your garden. Space and soil The first thing you need is a good area to grow them. They don’t like too much wind, so a sheltered space is preferable, with moist soil. They love clay because of all the minerals in this type of soil and don’t mind having their feet wet in Winter as long as there’s not weeks of water logging. If you have more sandy or chalky soil, prepare the beds with a 50% mix of compost and manure and dig this into the ground. Go for at least 30cm of the good stuff. They can’t get enough richness. Your roses will need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight to thrive. If your rose garden will be considerable in size, you can prepare your holes individually and mix

the compost and manure with the pre-existing soil and then plant separate roses in their own space. Preparation is everything so if you are beginning from scratch, now is the time to put lots of effort into good soil composition. They like 6.5 PH which is slightly acidic, but they happily grow in the alkaline soils of Brighton where I live. Rose selection Think about what type of roses you want: what colour, what shaped flower, what height. Also think about the style of rose: Hybrid Teas, Grandiflora and Floribundas, Miniatures, Standards or climbing and rambling roses. There are so many roses out there I can’t possibly go into them now but if it is big project you might like to run it past me or another garden designer first. Colour combination is really important as colours that jar can ruin your whole display. Buying and planting your roses If you wait until November, you can buy bare root roses which have been lifted from fields and tend to have a greater root spread. Also, it is an ideal time to plant as hot whether won’t dry the new plants out.

ular watering can lead to problems such as blossom end rot in tomatoes and splitting of root vegetables, so make sure to water well during dry spells. Pests - check vegetables regularly for aphids and deal with them as soon as you see them.

If you are digging individual holes, take out an area at least twice that of the root ball volume, including the depth, and plant the nodule, where the stems meet the root, about an inch of two below the surface. This prevents the more wild rose, that your cultivar rose is grafted onto, from shooting up above ground, turning your lovely rose into a bramble like creature! Building the dream By Nick Roberts RMR Group Regardless of the backdrop, never do we enjoy our homes more so than in summer – there’s nothing quite like getting your dose of vitamin D in the garden to the sweet sound of birdsong. It’s the greatest escape and the perfect moment to dream about unlocking your property’s potential. This is where the right team can be the sun cream to your dream! They can protect you from unforeseen circumstances so you don’t get burned. So, where can you find this team? A good Architect is perhaps broader than you think – there are no minimum or maximum requirements that dictate involvement. Whether you want to make internal layout changes, extending a house, building an out-building, or even developing some unused land, the right architect can help both bring your vision to life as well as save you money. Naturally, the idea of bigger projects such as developing vacant or spare land can seem daunting, but your vision is only limited by your imagination. Developing vacant land is an involved process, to

varying degrees. If the land was once prepared for construction or it has been built on in the past, some of the work may be done for you. Developing vacant or unused land is an investment. Careful planning will save you many headaches down the road. Layout your vision with must-haves and start planning as soon as you can. Architects are experts in this field and a great place to start. Creativity doesn’t just stretch through design; it can be found in all aspects of development and finance. Again, it’s the team around you that makes the difference, and you may just find that you can achieve more than you thought. To live the dream, first you’ve got to build it. www.robertsmillerredshaw.com

Build your own home - how to find a plot 10 expert tips by self-build specialist Michael Holmes Finding a plot is the number one obstacle for people wanting to build their own home, according to a recent report from the National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA). 1) Patchwork Plot: Assemble a site from smaller parcels of land such as ‘infill’ plots from the ends of two or three adjoining gardens. 2) Future Vision: Don’t discount a site you like just because the current planning permission is for something you don’t want to build. You can vary the existing permission or make a new application. 3) Team Building: Small sites for 2-5 houses are often easier to find than single plots - consider forming a self-build group with friends of family.

4) Land Databases: Try www.plotfinder.net 5) Register of Interest: Going through the planning records of previous applications for single dwellings in your chosen area may lead to a plot. 6) Grow Your Own: ‘Garden grabbing’ has become politically sensitive but it’s still a good route.

7) Widen The Net: Plots are harder to find than houses, so looking further afield to improve your chances.

8) Call My Agent: Work out which local estate agents specialise in land and development and stay in touch with them. Regular contact will ensure they know you’re serious. 9) Boots on the Ground: Ask in local shops, pubs, and on building sites if there are any plots for sale. Use maps and Google Earth to search for hidden potential. A ‘map search’ via HM Land Registry will reveal the owner’s details if the land is registered. 10) Brownfield Land: It takes imagination to see a disused industrial unit or a scrap yard as the site for a beautiful home, but ‘brownfield land’ can have potential - always take advice before buying.

Fifty years of electrical services Hamilton Cole, Pulborough

To have an established business for over 50 years is quite an accomplishment particularly in the face of today's on-line giants. Hamilton Cole is a family-run business which prides itself on the service it gives to customers. Siblings Robin and Susan who have run the business since 2004, spoke to Sussex Local about their aims and successes. Face-to-face contact, said Susan, is of great importance to their customers. It is easy to purchase an electrical appliance online – all it takes is a click of a button, but there is no button to click to be able to touch it, study the controls or ask a knowledgeable person about how it actually works. It’s not just reassuring to speak to a human being, it is pleasurable! “We are proud of the friendly service given to all our customers, whether they are buying the latest TV or simply asking for a replacement watch battery.”

Susan was anxious to point out that Hamilton Cole have stayed abreast of market trends and the various changes relating to electrical standards. As well as the retail outlet they are able to offer a number of domestic electrical services. These include TV aerial/satellite installation, PAT Testing, repairs to TVs, microwaves and cleaners and most recently, the installation of Electrical Vehicle (EV) Charge Points. Robin and Susan told us, “There is a growing demand for installing EV charge points and our electrician Steve has been on a course so we are fully qualified to do this now.” High Streets are adapting and Robin and Susan hope that Hamilton Cole's commitment to excellent service will stand them in good stead. Sussex honey & peanut butter fudge

A tasty afternoon treat

Ingredients - find all ingredients at the Larder • 200g granulated sugar • 3 tbsp Sussex honey • 200g unsweetened peanut butter • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract • 60ml oat milk • A small handful of ‘Cocoa Locos’ chocolate buttons for decoration, leave whole or roughly chop Method 1. Brush an 8 x 8 cake tin lightly with olive oil. (A round or square tin will do, whatever you have in your cupboard.) 2. Pour the sugar and oat milk into a pan, boil to 110°c this should take around 3-4 minutes, then cool the mixture to around 45°c before mixing in your remaining ingredients. 3. Once cooled stir in the peanut butter, honey, vanilla, and chocolate buttons. If you’re not sure you have stirred enough, stir, stir and stir some more, this process is important to ensure the fudge sets.

4. Pour the mixture into the 8x8 tin. 5. Place remaining chocolate buttons randomly over the fudge mixture and refrigerate for a minimum of 6 hours, or ideally overnight. 6. Once set, divide into individual portions. If the fudge did not set, here are a few tips. • Cooling the fudge is key. • Use a food thermometer • Add a little powdered sugar to the mixture. • Freeze it; pop the fudge in fridge it for 6 hours and then before serving pop into the freezer for the last hour. Village Larder is open 7 days a week, collection service, please see our website for full details. www.villagelarder.co.uk

Storrington neighbourhood wardens Community Dog Safety session at Sullington Warren We recently held our first Community Safety Session at Sullington Warren, with a focus on dogs. We teamed up with the National Trust and dog behaviourists from Bone Canis and Ravendale to give advice on how to keep dogs safe, happy and well when in the community. We took along a gazebo for shade and water and biscuits for the dogs and we had a fantastic turnout.

We often receive reports about dogs not being kept under control when off the lead, or reports of dog fouling, so took the opportunity to engage with dog owners and to offer free information and advice. Dog fouling can result in a fine of up to £100 under the Public Space Protection Order, this includes on public footpaths. We handed out free dog poo bags, to encourage people to pick up after their dogs, although all of those who

attended the event already had bags, showing that it is a minority not taking on the full responsibility of cleaning up their dogs’ mess. The National Trust rangers shared that in an area like the Warren, the “stick it and flick it” approach to dealing with dog mess can alter the nutrients in the soil so this should be avoided at all times. They also gave out advice on the wildlife of the Warren and how owners can help to protect the environment. The behaviourists from Bone Canis and Ravensdale gave lots of advice to owners and had an arena set up should anyone want to do some work with them in an environment away from any distractions.

We would like to thank the National Trust, Bone Canis and Ravendale for supporting the event. We are also grateful to Gatley’s pet shop in Storrington for providing the dog biscuits. There will be another event on 6th September

Transitioning through Menopause A smooth transition through Menopause by Heather Smith Information for your approach to Menopause Menopause seems to have come into the spotlight recently, and it’s good that there is more quality information available. Sometimes though, trying to get your head around a huge amount of information can be overwhelming, and while menopause can be complicated, I feel it is important to start with the basics. Self-care is important during menopause, making sure you get the right nutrients and adapting some lifestyle habits can provide long lasting benefits and make the transition through menopause easier. Here are four key things to put in place as a foundation for your approach to menopause. Manage stress During menopause, our ovaries are retiring and passing the baton to our adrenal glands. Our adrenal glands are responsible for producing stress hormones, so it makes sense to manage stress better to take load from your adrenals.

Try breathing exercises/meditation, take more down time and go for more walks. Focus on sleep quality Now is the time to hone in on your bedtime routine. Turn screens off at least one hour before bed and wind down. Getting at least half an hour of natural daylight before midday will help you get quality sleep at night. Include resistance exercise in your routine Making sure you’re including some load bearing exercise will help to maintain bone strength. Pay attention to your diet Eating a healthy diet of protein and veg can help balance hormones and maintain a healthy gut. Getting enough omega 3 in your diet will also help keep your skin hydrated, plus other benefits. A base for other strategies There are a lot more strategies you can use to optimise your transition through menopause, but make sure you’re starting with these key basics first as they form a base for your other strategies to build on. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

Help for treating Hay Fever causes Finding the right balance by Clare Caldecott Hay Fever and Histadine Hay Fever can cause misery for many this time of year. Over the counter medications can help suppress symptoms, but what if you could treat the underlying cause rather than symptoms? You can! High levels of Histamine can allow your immune system to become reactive to substances. The enzyme Histadine may have the potential to increase histamine production, it’s stored in the skin and the liver. Food rich in Histadine include Red Wine and Pork. In effect eating Histadine rich foods adds fuel to the fire! We need some histadine to function, when there is too much our bodies need antihistamine to rebalance. Treating the cause of Hay Fever Finding the right balance is key to treating the underlying cause and reducing symptoms naturally without the need to suppress symptoms. Support from Vitamin C at the correct dose can help produce antihistamine too. There are natural solutions that help, including local honey that can lower your reaction to local pollens. Bio Résonance (energy medicine) can help identify

imbalances. A computerised frequency is transferred though your body via contact probes in your hands, and a reading of imbalances/sensitivities is given. A remedy is generated for individual imbalances, targeting you to treat the cause instead of symptoms. Often one remedy is enough for life. Get in touch for a free chat about how you can be treated naturally! Contact Clare: 07717 281604 / uknaturalhealthclinics.com

Money Matters

Keeping your finances in order Money doesn't grow on trees; in fact for most of us it is only accumulated through years of hard work. It makes sense therefore to look after it wisely and this can often be best achieved with professional help. Ivan Lyons (above) of Investment Solutions spoke to Sussex Local about the financial services offered and their approach to guiding clients through the sometimes labyrinthine world of investments and tax planning. Clients approach the company for many reasons including advice about investments, pension planning, making provision for long-term care, the benefits or otherwise of equity release and Inheritance Tax planning. In all instances, he told us, the dedicated team of advisers and administrators will always put the client's aspirations at the forefront and devise a plan which prioritises their specific requirements.

Ivan explained that the initial review is free of charge and will begin with a discussion about the client's main concerns. There is no obligation to proceed but clients who decide to take further advice will be offered a tailored programme with a dedicated named adviser on hand to answer any queries which may arise. The firm's goal at all times is to make the client journey as simple and stress free as possible. Of course, financial advice will involve costs but Ivan confirmed that charges can be structured to suit clients’ circumstances and are always discussed openly and transparently. Ivan joined Investment Solutions in 2008 and took partial ownership and became Director in 2011. He has reached the status of Fellow and Chartered Financial planner of the Chartered Insurance Institute. When not working, Ivan is a keen runner and is on his way to his 300th full marathon! West Sussex Alternative Provision College Schools for excluded pupils in West Sussex. By Lynn Smith West Sussex Alternative Provision College (WSAPC) provides education to pupils who have been permanently excluded from school and those who cannot attend their own schools for medical reasons, and also supports referrals for pupils at significant risk of permanent exclusion from school. Head teacher, Doug Thomas tells me that, like all schools, WSAPC is committed to maximising student attainment with children working towards nationally recognised qualifications, and all students – regardless of their starting points - are provided with opportunities to achieve and celebrate their progress. The college strives to give pupils a fresh approach Head teacher Doug Thomas to learning in supportive, personalised alternative provision settings; the aim being, vulnerable young people and decided to address where possible, to reintegrate children and young this by forming a college that would have a vision, people into schools or other appropriate long- ethos and philosophy that embraces excellent term educational settings. practice for their students and one that has the leadership commitment to drive and demand Operating in seven West Sussex locations only the best for their cohort of young people.” Formed in April 2013, the college delivers 292 Addressing social and emotional needs as well full time places for children and young people. as educational needs WSAPC’s schools are strategically placed to offer educational provisions across West Sus- WSAPC, Doug Thomas says, “Encourages pupils sex, with centres in Chichester, Littlehampton, to continue their educational progress both within Worthing, Lancing, Burgess Hill, Haywards the time they are with us and when they are ready to move on to other schools and establishHeath and Crawley. He goes onto say that, “We are also the only school in West Sussex that has never permanently excluded a student at any time. A record that we are very much proud of as it embraces our vision, ethos and philosophy.” Re-engage, ReFocus and Reintegrate This vision, ethos and philosophy is encapsulated in the acronym FOCUS: Future – every pupil starts with a “clean slate” at WSAPC. The school focuses upon children’s futures and builds on their ambitions and hopes, in order to make them a reality. Opportunities – the school endeavours to give pupils a variety of opportunities to learn about themselves and who they are as a person, to learn about their strengths and skill sets, and to understand their needs so that it can support their growth as positive individuals and prepare them for moving on. Curriculum – the school wants to deliver a wide curriculum in all of its centres, to cater for its pupils’ development both academically and

socially, giving them opportunities to further their educational careers in different settings whether in a mainstream school, a specialist school or college setting. Us: Doug Thomas says that, at WSAPC, “We do not have a “them and us”. We have an us! Our staff are dedicated to lead our pupils in an empathetic way in order to guide them to make informed and positive decisions. We are dedicated to work in an environment that promotes inclusion, equality and fairness and encourage our pupils to make positive changes for themselves, for their school community and for society.”

School: “First and foremost, WSPAC is a school. We may be a school for a short period of time as our pupils transition from one key stage to an other or when they are considering different educational settings, but nevertheless we are a school. This means we expect our pupils to learn and respect each other at all times and to thrive in our community.” Providing consistency across the centres WSAPC has over 140 staff spread across its seven centres and central teams ensure that students receive the care and attention required in order to thrive in their setting, and also to enable positive transition to future establishments, including post-16 provision. These teams include an Outreach team, providing one to one education support within the home or community, a Blended Learning Team, supporting distance learning from home and working with those pupils who are too ill to attend school, and the Inclusion Team, supporting young people at risk within their mainstream setting to prevent exclusions. “This structure further ensures that our college can respond

effectively to the changing needs of our cohorts and that our practices are of a high quality and educational trends and good practice is kept up to date.” Not a “school for naughty children” When I ask Doug Thomas what he sees as the greatest challenge currently facing the school, he answers honestly that the main challenges are largely due to a general misunderstanding by the public, and at times, by the local community, around the work that the school does. He reiterates that WSAPC isn’t a “school for naughty children” but is, rather, a college for reengaging and refocussing and then reintegrating its young people into a workable society. “Some examples over the years include exstudents who are now, police officers, successful businesswomen and men, NHS workers, solicitors, teachers etc. Without the ‘Three WSAPC Rs,’ many of our young people would have been put on the scrap heap and excluded from society.” Contact: email: hcentral@wsapc.co.uk or call 01444 232771. www.apcollege.co.uk

244 Legal

Will exclusions By Will Writer Emma Wells MIPW There are three types of people who can make a claim on your Estate, they are your legally married spouse or civil partner, your children and anyone who has been financially dependent on you in the two years immediately prior to your death. For most people when they make their Will, they tend to ensure that they have made a provision for those that fall into these categories. But all families are different, and we all know that situations aren’t always straightforward and sometimes utilising a non-provision clause within your Will may be appropriate. If for example you have allowed someone to live with you, perhaps rent free or for very little, it could be argued that provision for them should be made via your Will on the basis that this arrangement made them financially dependent on you, when in reality you were helping someone out whilst alive but had no intention of them benefiting from your Estate when you’ve died. You may feel confident that no claim would be made but as we all know, money can make people act quite

differently to how you would expect and planning for different scenarios is always wise. You may be in the process of a divorce and wish to have a Will in place that specifies your children (or other family member) not your current spouse should inherit your estate entirely. Sometimes people become estranged from their children for all sorts of reasons and they therefore wish to make clear that omitting a child or children from their Will was not an oversight but deliberate. If you wish you can include the reason why you have chosen to exclude someone, or you can simply state that the exclusion is deliberate. If you include a reason, it is important to remember that once probate has been granted anyone can view your Will online for a small fee of £1.50 and unless you want to air your dirty laundry in public post death it may be best to list the reasons why in an accompanying letter to your executors. For more information please do get in touch on 01903 821010 or email wills@nsure.co.uk.

Imagine Eating Lemons

A children’s introduction to mindfulness Brighton based Jason Rhodes came to write this book as part of a much larger vision. He wants to educate the younger generation with the simple tools needed to help manage their thoughts and feelings, resulting in a much more peaceful and connected world. The book is illustrated by Richard Dearing. Copies of the book can be bought from local bookshops or from www.graffeg.com

In Imagine Eating Lemons we follow the journey of Chester Chestnut as he learns about his anxious thoughts and feelings, where they come from and how to control them.

Inspired by the authors own struggles with anxiety, Imagine Eating Lemons is a brilliant introduction to mindfulness techniques for children, as well as a perfect way to open up discussions about anxiety and mental health both in a classroom and at home. With the events of the past few years, from the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine, children’s feelings of anxiety have become heightened. Imagine Eating Lemons is hugely beneficial in helping deal with these feelings and a brilliant tool for teachers to discuss issues of mental health and feelings of worry and anxiety.

Driving laws from around the world By Nadia Goldsmith Although most driving laws are designed with safety in mind, some are more peculiar. Here are some of the strangest driving laws from around the world to intrigue you. Eating while driving – Cyprus Cyprus prohibits motorists from eating and drinking behind the wheel as they must keep both hands on the wheel at all times. Like many Scandinavian countries, Cyprus asks drivers to have their headlights on at all times. In Cyprus sneaking a snack can cost you an €85 fine. Dirty number plates – Russia You may have read it’s illegal to drive a dirty car in Russia; that’s not true. In Moscow however, motorists can get fined if their number plate is covered in dirt, salt or road grime. Personal breathalyzer kits – France Since 2013, French motorists have been required to carry an unused breathalyser in their car to test their own alcohol levels. While motorists who chose not to purchase one originally

risked receiving an €11 fine, the sanction didn’t make it into the final version of the law so this law has been historically under forced with no penalty in action at present. No splashing – Japan Japanese motorists must think twice before driving through a puddle. The law states they need to have mudflaps fitted to their vehicle, reduce their speed and/or take other measures before ploughing through water or mud to ensure they don’t spray pedestrians with it. June in Japan is known for Typhoons and this is month that the enforcement of this law goes up. 24-Hour headlights – Sweden It could be the sunniest summer day but in Sweden you must keep your headlights on. Drivers are required to keep their headlights on 24 hours a day throughout the country.

254 Parish Council News

Ashington Parish Council Queen’s jubilee & planning applications The hanging baskets went up in time for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend. This year they are red/white/blue to mark the occasion. It was lovely to see so many residents on Jubilee weekend at the ‘Old Ashington’ Exhibition, Vintage Teas at the Youth Club and the Ashington Scouts rifle range. Huge thanks must go to: Margaret Alford and Lee English for the Exhibition; Helen, Philip, Valerie, Pat, Wendy, Doreen, Bobby and Lewis for the Vintage Teas and activities at the Youth Club; David and Sharon Newland for the Scouts rifle range and to the many others that helped in any way. Still no news on the planning application for the Tearoom. However, we have a mobile coffee van coming to the site this summer so that’ll provide a service to both residents and visitors. Also, no news on the Chanctonbury Nurseries planning application and no update from Bellway Homes on their initial proposals for Church Farm. Planning doesn’t move very swiftly.

The Parish Council recently supported the Ashington Community Centre Trust’s (ACCT) application to HDC to use Developer funds to extend their car park by a further 9 spaces. The money was given to HDC in June 2012 for use on Community Centre ‘extension’ projects but as it was £27k it wasn’t enough for any major extensions. A planning application needs to be submitted by ACCT and approved by HDC but hopefully this will be done before the funds expire in June 2022. In June 2012 we might reasonably have expected that additional Developer funds would have become available from new developments that we could combine to facilitate bigger village projects but there has been very limited new development in Ashington since 2012. www.ashingtonpc.org.uk

Thakeham Parish Council Roundup of local village news from the Parish Council Village Hall Thakeham Village Hall has weekday daytime and evening slots available for regular hirers. If you are looking for a venue, please get in touch via email info@thakehamvillagehall.co.uk or call 01798 815 467. (Please note we are not looking to increase our exercise/ yoga/pilates classes at this time.) Recycling Thank you to everyone who continues to use the local recycling Sussex Green Living facility which is now available every weekday morning (9.30-12.30) at the Village Hall. For details of what materials are accepted, visit our website. Platinum Jubilee memorials A bench commemorating the Jubilee has now been installed at the Abingworth football fields, and a new specimen tree will be planted this autumn. Parish Councillor vacancies At time of writing we have two councillor vacancies, (although this may change by time of publication). If you are interested, contact the Clerk for information. Planning Most new housing schemes in Horsham district remain held up by the need to meet 'water neutral' requirements, due to pressure on resources in the Arun catchment area. This situation seems likely to continue to at least the end of 2022. Several local planning proposals, e.g. the 25-house site at the ex-Rushfield Nursery, are affected by this. Construction of the last 75-house phase of the Abingworth development is in full swing, and will run through to late 2023. However, the Parish Council has objected to the detail of Bellway Homes’ house design proposals, as they appear to imply a further increase in occupant numbers. There is no further news about the proposal for 30 new homes at the site South of Furze Common Road, which the Parish Council strongly objected to. Monaghans Mushrooms closure latest A further conversation with Monaghan’s managers is scheduled, and will update residents on anything we learn about their plans for the site.

Kinsbrook Vineyard and Farmhouse

The doors of the new farm shop building will open soon at this local enterprise (just west of the B2139 near Picketty Corner, RH20 2RZ). As well as a farm shop and café overlooking the site, the visitor centre will offer wine-tasting and vineyard tours. Find out more at www.kinsbrookvineyard.com Road safety The Parish Council has asked WSCC Highways to consider reducing the speed limit on the B2139 north and south of the Picketty Corner junction with West Chiltington Road, due to the poor sightlines there. Football fields Works to improve winter drainage at the Abingworth football fields are complete and we are monitoring the recovery of the surface for the next season. Allotments The final scheme for the new Abingworth allotments is now agreed, and they are due be delivered mid-2023. Washington Parish Council Residents’ meeting, survey, traffic, cable route & vacancies Report from Washington Parish Council. From the Chairman, Cllr Patrick Heeley. A date for your diary Due to the pandemic, it has been several years since the Parish Council organised a meeting for residents of the parish. To make up for this, a special meeting will be held on Friday 23rd September at 19.00 at the Washington Memorial Hall (Chanctonbury Room). An agenda will be published on the Council’s website and noticeboards nearer the time. Andrew Griffith MP has kindly agreed to be our guest speaker, and he will outline his support and involvement in those issues which are of most concern in Washington Parish. There will be reports from the local members of Horsham District Council (HDC) and West Sussex County Council (WSCC), as well as Sussex Police. Members of the Parish Council will outline the key issues that the parish currently faces. After the presentations, there will be adequate time for questions and answers, and refreshments will be provided throughout. After the meeting, there will be an opportunity to chat informally over a glass of wine. Admission to the meeting is free and limited to residents of Washington Parish (including Heath Common and Millford Grange), subject to hall capacity. Residents will be required to show evidence of residency (e.g. driving licence, utility bill) to ensure that capacity is restricted to those who qualify. Please join us for what promises to be a most interesting evening.

Investing in our community As a parish with a “made” Neighbourhood Plan, WPC now receives 25% of the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) which is paid by developers when consent is given. (For parishes without a neighbourhood plan, the amount is 15%). The Parish Council set up a working party to look at

how these funds could best be utilised for the benefit of the parish. We now want to hear from residents, with a chance to have your say over local priorities, before final decisions are taken. This will be one of the topics discussed at the September meeting, but in the meantime, a survey is underway and leaflets and posters are in distribution. The easiest way to complete the survey is to visit the council’s Home Page at www.washingtonparish.org.uk and complete the online form before the closing date on 31st October 2022 or you can email the dedicated survey address at: cilresponse@washingtonparish.org.uk Traffic issues Two members of the council recently met with WSCC Leader Paul Marshall and the Highways team to discuss residents concerns about speeding in Washington Village. Police have recently provided surveillance and reprimanded motorists who illegally use the bus crossover from the A24 into the northern entrance to the village. Meanwhile, we are progressing the installation of a speed activated warning device in Rock Road, following the results of the recent speed survey commissioned by the parish council. Rampion 2 cable route Following recent survey activity in the village, we are informed that the next stage of the Rampion 2 windfarm expansion proposals will be the consultation feedback to the public during September. The Parish Council has pressed for alternative routing of the inshore cable route to avoid Washington Village. Parish Council vacancies We currently have vacancies for co-option in both the Heath Common and Washington Wards. All members are volunteers and there is no political affiliation. If you are interested in supporting your local community and having a say in matters that affect our area, please contact the clerk for further information and an application form. clerk@washingtonparish.org.uk Website For all information about the council, its members, meetings, agendas and minutes, visit www.washingtonparish.org.uk

Storrington & Sullington Parish Council

Mill Lane and Browns Lane traffic calming applications Edited extracts from draft minutes of the Parish Council meeting on 29th June 2022. Mill Lane. Residents attending the meeting referred to several cases of speeding, crashes and near misses including a serious incident recently involving a car colliding with a power pole, causing loss of power to several homes over the Jubilee bank holiday. This stretch of road is widely used by pupils walking to school and the pavements are very narrow. It was also reported that the school buses regularly cross the white lines and speed along the road. Residents of Hillcrest also described problems with entering and exiting their driveways due to vehicles driving too fast on the bend in the road. Councillors acknowledged the comments from members of the public and it was generally agreed that traffic calming measures were appropriate. Councillors voted eleven in favour, and one against. It was therefore decided to support the application for traffic calming measures to be introduced in Mill Lane.

Meadowside and Browns Lane. Members of the public spoke about this stretch of road being used as a rat run to avoid the High Street and described incidents where residents’ vehicles have been hit by speeding motorists. Dist. Cllr. Wright and County Cllr. Marshall had met with some residents and had witnessed vehicles being driven too fast along the narrow road. Councillors acknowledged that this stretch of road was being used as a rat run to avoid the High Street and heard of cases of vehicle collisions and near misses, and agreed that traffic calming measures would be appropriate. However it was felt that as existing speed limits were not being enforced, rather than applying for a reduced speed limit, West Sussex CC should be asked to assess what measures can be put into place to deal with the problem. Councillors voted unanimously to support the application for traffic calming measures. www.storrington-pc.gov.uk
