SUSSEX LOCAL

July 2022 Cover image: Sandgate Park by Kris Thomas

HELLO! July marks the start of the long break for students and teachers across the country and it’s anticipated that millions will be jetting off on holiday especially after all the limitations of the last two Summers. It's also “Plastic Free July” a global movement aiming to highlight the harm of single-use plastics and also provide resources and ideas to help us reduce our plastic waste. Visit www.plasticfreejuly.org. Pretending to be ill or seriously injured sounds like an unusual way to spend your free time but for Casualties Union volunteers there’s nothing they enjoy more. It also provides valuable training opportunities for the emergency services. Find out more about their important work in this month’s Charity profile feature. We also have local council and community news, gardening and property features, recipe, puzzles and of course our comprehensive events guide. If you have something local to publicise, please get in touch. Happy holidays!

Kris & Jeff

214 Charity & Community News

Sussex Snippets Community news from across the counties The National Garden Scheme (NGS) doesn’t just open beautiful gardens for charity, they are passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of gardens too. They also support charities and help community gardening projects. They have donated over £63 million to nursing and health charities and made an annual donation of over £3 million in 2021. Their core beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. For more information and to view all the open gardens near you, visit www.ngs.org.uk. Nature-friendly road verges are helping pollinators across West Sussex. If you notice a verge with grass that’s longer than you’d expect, it’s likely to have been left to help nature. Inspired by the council’s Pollinator Action Plan, which aims to increase the number of crucial pollinating insects - bees and moths – this has become a much higher priority in recent years. Friends of South Downs are focussed on the pollution caused by plastic tree guards. On 21 May their band of volunteers collected over 700 plastic tree Guards for recycling in Singleton Forest in partnership with Forestry England. Details on: www.friendsofthesouthdowns.org.uk/ban-plastic -tree-guards Sussex Search & Rescue, a team of volunteers that support Sussex Police in searching for vulnerable missing people, has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This is the highest award that can be given to voluntary groups in the UK. More information on the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and all winners can be found at www.gov.uk/queens-award -for-voluntary-service The end-of-life charity Marie Curie is calling on people in Sussex to throw a Blooming Great Tea Party in July to help fund vital care and support for those living with a terminal illness, and their families. Simply set a date and invite family, friends, or colleagues to tuck into a treat and catch-up over a cuppa. Every penny raised will go towards ensuring more people have access to

the care and support they need at the end of life. More details at: www.mariecurie.org.uk/ teaparty or contact your local Community Fundraiser Clara Gill on Clara.Gill@mariecurie.org.uk / 07717 480602.

Arundel & South Downs MP, Andrew Griffith, is leading a bid for West Sussex to pioneer trialling new acoustic cameras to catch anti-social road users in the act. The Department of Transport confirmed it would be trialling four innovative noise cameras across England and Wales. Andrew Griffith MP has joined forces with Sussex Police, the Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne, West Sussex County Council, Sussex Safer Roads Partnership and local campaign groups, to make the case for a camera to be located on the noise ‘hotspot’ on the A29 at Bury Hill. West Sussex Libraries are looking for volunteers from age 14 up to support children with the Summer Reading Challenge in libraries. The ideal commitment is a minimum of 10 hours from July to September but there can be flexibility in choosing days and times. Young applicants could also use this volunteering opportunity as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award, (must be agreed with the library in advance). For more details and to apply visit www.westsussex.gov.uk and search for ‘Summer Reading Challenge volunteer’. Students from West Sussex Alternative Provision College (WSAPC) brought a sustainability and recycling stall to the “Goodwoof” dog event at Goodwood recently. Students teamed up to make a range of products from recycled materials, including dog toys, bandanas and waste bag pouches; they raised a total of £2,012 for WSAPC’s College Enterprise Fund. WSAPC delivers the equivalent of 292 full time places for children and young people from West Sussex who have been permanently excluded, those at risk of exclusion and those out of school for medical reasons.

216 Charity & Community News

Charity & Community News Jubilee Market Raises Funds Storrington Community Market (est. 1943) hosted a special Platinum Jubilee Market on Friday 3rd June, which was a great success. The usual stalls were there with local businesses selling home made cakes, crafts, eggs, locally grown plants, fruit & veg and health and skincare products. The cafe was offering free tea and coffee to celebrate the occasion. Everyone stopped to sing the National Anthem halfway through the morning, led by Royal Opera soprano Jill Arthur. Fundraising stalls including a tombola with dozens of prizes donated by local businesses including Waitrose Storrington and Tesco Pulborough raised a total of £224. Charity & Community Success for Swans Under 12s

Freedom Boxes for Ukraine

The Storrington Community U12's boys’ football team began their first competitive season, sharing dreams of winning games - ultimately trophies. Little did they realise just how successful they were going to be.

On 24th February, Storrington residents Richard & Diana Watkins were with their son Stuart and his family in the Czech mountains, enjoying a half term holiday. Computer programmer Stuart started to receive calls from his work colleagues in Ukraine and Russia saying that war had broken out. Stuart kept in contact with his frightened friends and colleagues and two days later started to receive requests for help with basic provisions by the people in Ukraine. Richard cancelled his flight home and helped convert Stuart’s offices in Prague into a warehouse to collate and pack boxes of goods which were being purchased by friends and other volunteers. Within a week they acquired a fire rescue van, three SUV’s, eight drivers and a plan to drive the ten hours to the Ukraine/Poland border in order to deliver the essential items to a Ukrainian Government warehouse and try to bring families back to Prague from the border. Months later, and the operation is organizing weekly transfers of refugees from the Ukraine borders and sending boxes of essential supplies.

Storrington Swans squad with their coaches

Their league campaign ended in a share of the Championship with Horsham Herons, both finishing with only one defeat. With the league season over, the squad headed off to Bedford for a whirlwind tour, playing three games in as many days. They beat Bugbrooke St. Michaels FC 8-3 on Friday night, then drew 1-1 with County Cup winners Wellingborough Whitworth FC on Saturday morning. Football then took a back seat in favour of afternoon antics for all on the inflatable obstacle course back at Wyboston Lakes Hotel. After a rest the team finished the tour on Sunday morning with an impressive 2-0 victory over a very strong Bedford Town side. The weekend ended with a session of Bubble Football on the way home! Back in Storrington, their success was complete when the following weekend they took on the joint 'A' League winners, Horsham Herons, in the U12's League Cup Final at the Horsham FC Camping World Community Stadium, and came away 4-2 winners. Pictured above, the full squad with Manager James Davis, Assistant Coaches Nigel Beyer & Henry Saunders. Squad: Tyler Saunders, James Bernstein, Dan Nicholson (Captain), Daniel Henderson, Henry Fourcade, George Reynolds, Taylor Beyer, Harry Davis, Josh Hayles, Charlie Austin, Alex Varga, Fenton Scerri & Bobby Rose).

Children with their boxes in a Bucha orphanage

The items are organized into three sizes of box which are be sponsored by donations. The first, costing EU107 is a Family Box and has basics such as toiletries, medicine, nappies, bedding, coffee, tea and bedding. The second is a Children’s Box, just EU9.25, has toys, sweets and books. The last is a Children’s Hospital Box, with bedding and costs EU45. To learn more and donate, visit www.freedom-boxes.com. Children can upload messages to Ukrainian children via Stuart’s other website www.messagesofhope.uk.

West Dean - Creative Spaces Like all Head Gardeners, Tom Brown can’t speak without stooping to pull out the odd weed as we make our way around West Dean Gardens. With 100 acres of garden including an Arboretum, College grounds, 13 Victorian greenhouses, orchards, walled gardens and plenty of other interesting spaces, he has a lot to do in a day. Founded in 1927 the scheme encouraged people to open up their gardens to the public to raise money for the newly formed district nurses role in poor urban areas. It has moved on since then, from “a shilling a head” to raised over 20 million pounds for a variety of charities in the last 10 years. If you go to the NGS website and type in ‘Sussex’ the dates you are free and you will find 36 gardens that are opening their gates in July though each garden is just open for a day or two only. Unlocking the potential of your home By Nick Roberts - Roberts Miller Redshaw Group Each and every one of us has pondered about what improvements could be made to our homes – no-one is immune. After all, our home is our castle, and tranquil escape from the stress sitting just outside the front gate. But inside every property resides the potential for improvement, and this is where the right architect can become your artist. With a palette of experience and a brush of creativity, a good architect can transform your home. One of the most popular options are single story rear extensions. We’ve all seen magazine pictures of property transformations and they almost always feature this modern upgrade. Full-width bifold or sliding doors into the garden with an open plan kitchen is a major tick in the box and one of the most transformative changes you can do. Wrap around extensions are similar, but make use of the often neglected space to the side of the property. Overgrown side passages often camouflage the true amount of space to extend into, making this option a potential diamond in the rough.

No garden to extend into? Then a loft conversion might be the crown jewel. You’ve probably got a neighbour that’s already done it and revelling in the extra space – either as a bedroom, bathroom or ensuite. Garage conversions are one of the most economic ways to create space and get a return on your investment. In recent years, they’ve become a popular office conversion to host uninterrupted zoom calls! Two story extensions can be the most transformative. Combining the benefits of opening up the ground floor whilst expanding the space upstairs too. As always, we recommend seeking the assistance from an architect. They’ll be able to paint the picture you’re looking for and help you materialise the canvas into a reality. www.robertsmillerredshaw.com

New poll reveals moving house is more stressful than having children or going through divorce, as 70% of respondents in the South East ranked moving house as the most stressful life event. It takes 3 - 4 months on average to move in the South East, the highest of any UK region. Life after lockdown has seen no shortage of households looking to up sticks. New research from Legal & General Retail reveals the average UK adult moves four times in their life – yet it’s still the most stressful thing you can do. Storrington neighbourhood wardens Projects to benefit Storrington's young people We have recently embarked on an early intervention scheme with the young people in Storrington so they know who we are and see us as adults they can talk to and trust. It also helps us to engage with them and to stop persistent issues arising. Initiatives include:

Little life savers: We have arranged first aid training for the year 6 students at Storrington Primary School. The Rotary Club very kindly funded this event for us, and we hope to continue the training on a yearly basis. Lodge hill: With funding from the Rotary Club a group of pupils from Storrington Primary went on team building days, to increase their confidence and learn to work as a team. Meet and greet: We arranged an end of term meet and greet session for the year 6 students with ourselves, Sussex Police, and the Fire Service. We did this so the students that will be moving up into year 7 would feel more confident about people they can turn to should they have

any problems, as they start to gain independence. This also will include patrols at the start of the new term at Rock Road. Football sessions: We arranged for the Leisure Centre to offer the 3G football pitch at a reduced rate for our young people at allocated times. The Leisure Centre has built upon this and have offered football coaching for 11 to 14-year-olds during the week for £1. Partnership project: We have supported a project which looks at the provision of activities for young people in the area and how best to advertise what is already available. We are always looking for projects that we can support that benefit the community and improve safety in the area. If you have any ideas or would like more details on the projects we have already run, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us, as we would love to hear from you. What’s best for weight loss Cardio or resistance exercise? By Heather Smith You’ll use more calories during a cardio workout than a resistance workout, but there are several reasons that the resistance work is still the better option. The raised calorie burn during your cardio workout stops as soon as you finish your workout, just like you’d expect. But, when you’re doing a resistance workout, that doesn’t happen and instead our metabolism gets a boost which lasts for up to 72 hours after the workout! Our bodies learn over time to become more efficient at cardio workouts – especially when we’re eating in a calorie deficit with the aim of losing weight. This means you’re burning less calories during your workout today compared to when you did the same workout a couple of weeks ago! Remember the ‘fat burning zone’? For long duration cardio exercise, our bodies will use fat for fuel. And part of the adaptation to training will involve our bodies learning that it can reduce muscle mass and store the fuel required for this type of exercise. With less muscle on our bodies, our metabolism starts to slow, and we find our-

selves having to eat less and exercise more in order to not gain weight. Our bodies do become more efficient at resistance work too, through the gaining of muscle – which is calorie hungry stuff in itself. Because of the increased muscle, we’re now able to use higher resistance, which brings us full circle and means that you’ll actually need more calories to perform the same workout today than you did a couple of weeks ago. This all said, let’s take the cardio exercise out from under the bus now because there is a benefit to adding in some non-resistance type exercise too. Alongside a good resistance training program, you can use cardio exercise to increase your calorie deficit without having to reduce your food intake. Remember too that there’s no need to go for a ‘traditional cardio workout’ like a run or a cycle – particularly if you don’t enjoy it. Increasing your step count and finding ways to move more is surprisingly effective too. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

UK Natural Health Clinics Identifing foods you are intolerant to - Clare Caldecott What is food intolerance? Food intolerance is difficulty digesting certain foods and having an unpleasant physical reaction to them. It causes symptoms such as bloating, tummy pain, skin rashes or itching which usually happen a few hours after eating the food. Food additives and crop spray Some people react to the additives in the foods or the pesticides or anti fungal sprays. Washing has little effect to these as they are formulated to be rain resistant. Washing with 10% white wine vinegar and water solution can help wash off some of the additives. Some foods can affect our mood too. Additives and “E” numbers can cause low mood and tiredness in adults and hyperactivity in children. Identifying problematic foods Identifying foods that are having a poor effect is part of the analysis I use to help people restore their health. Screening for over 300 everyday foods, chemicals and additives plays an important part in helping you restore optimal health.

When my son was younger we found he was reacting to tomato ketchup. His behaviour was challenging after eating it. Once he stopped eating it his teacher even commented on how much better his behaviour and concentration were, so much so his grades increased too. If you would like to know what foods you are reacting to, get in touch and let us help you find out! www.uknaturalhealthclinics.com

240 Charity Profile

Casualties Union Supporting rescue, first aid & medical training by Lynn Smith This month’s charity is unusual amongst those organisations I’ve interviewed recently, its mission isn’t to raise funds to enable research into a particular disease or condition, or to assist a particular group in society, or to conserve a specific area of land or species. In fact, Casualties Union doesn’t engage in fundraising as an activity at all and the charity’s remit is to provide a service to a whole stratum of society – those in medical care, first aid and rescue services. A registered charity and independent voluntary organisation, Casualties Union provides acting and reacting casualties, and patients, for the medical profession, emergency services and those teaching first aid, nursing and rescue. The charity’s volunteers spare the time to train and practice casualty simulation, sharing the conviction that rescue, first aid and medical training is improved by having casualties and patients who look and behave as realistically as possible. Using make up members create the illusion of illness or injury, from a faint to a heart attack or from a splinter to a protruding broken bone. Studying how victims would behave, adopting appropriate posture and facial expression and speech they respond to “treatment” by providing vital feedback both during the scenarios or roleplay and in debrief sessions.

have served for many years as General Secretary and one of the Trustees.”

Bringing realism to training for 80 years

No paid workers - fun volunteering opportunities

Hon. General Secretary and Trustee, Caroline Thomas tells me that the charity was founded in 1942, during World War II, by Eric Claxton, who was training the Civil Defence to bring bomb victims out of damaged buildings. To improve the rescuer’s skills, Eric Caxton introduced the idea of casualty simulation, with real people and madeup injuries, which would require greater care to extricate than would dummies. “The success of this idea inspired his colleagues to form an organisation, which carried on into peacetime,” Caroline says, “And this year we are eighty years old.”

Casualties Union has no paid employees. Caroline tells me, “Every member of the organisation is a volunteer, doing the work because it’s worthwhile, rewarding and fun. We currently have about 260 members. It is a lot less than during the 1950s and 1960s, when people were looking for ways to spend their leisure time. Nowadays people are so busy and have many other interests. But it’s the dedicated ones that stay on year after year. “Our volunteers are attached to units around England and Wales, where they attend training sessions in these skills and volunteer for duties, ranging from a first aid course to a big plane crash exercise at an airport.”

Caroline first discovered Casualties Union, at a big first aid competition run by St John Ambulance, which she had joined as a volunteer. “There were these people, apparently badly hurt or collapsed unwell. With an interest in drama and theatrical make-up I decided to join them. Before long I was London Branch Leader, worked up through the grades to Senior Instructor, and

Worthing Branch Leader Norleen Smith with a simulated head injury

Unsurprisingly, the 2020 lockdown hit the organisation hard: “We could no longer meet for training or carry out any duties. It was a bad time for the whole of Casualties Union, not being able to be with our colleagues doing the thing we love so much. Worthing Branch lost two members

who were nurses and no longer had the leisure time to be members. ”Caroline goes onto say that the Trustees used this ‘inactive’ time to consult together on governance for improving and modernising our charity. “The autumn of 2021 saw easing of restrictions and we felt safer with vaccination, so outdoor duties with masks commenced in some parts of the country, and it is now picking up very nicely.” How is the service funded? Most of Casualties Union funding comes from those organisations that use the charity’s services. Caroline tells me that, “When a client wants to use our volunteers to help in their training or practice exercises, the local branch negotiates a figure that will cover their expenses to get there and back, make-up costs and a bit to cover administration, training and generally to support our charity.” The greatest challenge said Caroline is matching the client’s need with the number of volunteers available to provide the service. Worthing branch needs a training venue Active since 2015, the Worthing Branch is one of the more recent branches and Caroline encourages “… that anyone in the area needing realism

in their training programme for rescue, first aid and medical care should please contact Worthing Branch.” She goes on to say that more urgently the branch is seeking an inexpensive venue for holding their training meetings “and would be delighted to receive offers.” However, the branch’s continuing success, along with that of the charity, relies upon recruiting more volunteers and welcomes anyone, “From the age of eight upwards, with no upper age limit, and from any background or culture. We embrace diversity because it reflects the population. A knowledge of first aid helps but is not

242 Charity Profile

essential: we train new members in everything they need to know [in order] to make-up and act a variety of conditions and injuries, and we keep studying and practising throughout our time with the charity.” Car crashes, explosions and terrorist attacks

Worthing branch is, “In the very capable hands of (Branch Leader) Norleen Smith,” and has provided its services as casualties for a diverse number of organisations. Worthing Branch has worked with student doctors and paramedics, setting up scenes that portray accidents and medical emergencies. “At Brighton University a scene was set up in a laboratory where the mixing of chemicals had caused an explosion. The Branch members simulated burns and embedded glass in their faces and hands.” The branch has also participated in a mock terrorist attack, staged at Gatwick Airport, to help the airport staff and emergency services to perfect their procedures and members have been extricated from smashed cars in a simulated traffic collision for East Sussex Fire Brigade. They have helped train Red Cross first aiders and the Navy on Whale Island in Portsmouth.

Be Smart, Glaze Smart.

Worthing Branch of Casualties Union runs regular training meetings where volunteers learn skills in acting, professional make-up techniques and staging – all to make the incident and injury seem as realistic as possible. A key factor when the members provide their services as “casualties” for organisations; it is these skills, that provide the realism that the charity’s clients need in their own training. Casualties Union volunteers are offered a full training programme and as well a comprehensive manual to study. All members are covered by the charity’s public liability insurance. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact the Worthing Branch direct and, Caroline says, branch members plan to have a stall at the Heene Community Centre this summer, where they will hand out publicity leaflets, display photos of their work and demonstrate injury makeup on each other. They will welcome all enquiries from anyone interested in either using them or joining them. Life interest trust By Will Writer Emma Wells MIPW Regardless of how you feel about paying for later life care, it is always important to explore your options. Many clients approach me regarding putting their home into a Trust as they are worried about it being used to fund long term care, leaving nothing for their family to inherit however, this is rarely a viable option. In fact, if you have been advised to put your property into a Trust to avoid it being used to fund care home fees then it is very likely that you have been mis- sold a product that won’t work. The local authority are wise to such Trusts and should you require care, they simply set aside the Trust as though it doesn’t exist and value your estate with your property included. The onus is on you to prove there was a legitimate reason for creating the Trust that wasn’t anything at all to do with care home fees. What you should be doing is looking at what you can legitimately do that isn’t going to land you in hot water with the local authority, the Tax man or leave disgruntled children.

Using a Life Interest Trust in your Will secures half of your property for your chosen beneficiaries. It does so by you leaving your half of your property to beneficiaries other than your partner on first death but with a Life Interest in the property for your partner. This means that your partner can carry on living in the property treating it as though it is theirs in its entirety including being able to sell the property and buy another in its place. The person with the Life Interest needs take precedence over the beneficiaries until stipulated within your Will but your share is not owned by them. This means that should they go on to need care only their half of the property can be assessed as a means of paying for it. Your children will therefore inherit at least half of the value of your property and your partner will be able to afford high quality care. It is a compromise but one that truly works. Storrington Primary School Whole school STEM Day

Storrington Primary recently held a STEM day for the whole school. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and maths. We value the STEM disciplines greatly at Storrington as they are such an important part of learning and preparation for next stages in life. Bringing the subjects together enabled the children to design, make, build and construct a product to solve a problem. The children had to design a vessel to carry an egg safely to the ground without cracking when

dropped from a height. Children worked in teams across the school with a mix of age groups. It was fantastic to see the collaboration, team work and excitement the groups had for the activities. Watching the children’s faces as the eggs soared to the ground, was a joy. There were some ingenious designs for the egg vessels; it was a truly fantastic experience. www.storringtonprimary.co.uk

St Mary’s C of E Primary School, Washington Chichester festival, carnival lights & bird silhouettes

Year 3 classes at St Mary’s CE (Aided) Primary Pulborough had an exciting day this week when they were visited by a representative of Chichester Festival Theatre’s Art Outreach programme. The children spent the day making and decorating paper lanterns, which will be used in the Carnival of Lights in Chichester on June 10. The children first of all made a framework of willow sticks in a pyramid shape, then applied a glue mixture to tissue paper and wrapped it around the frame. Once the glue had dried, they chose their bird silhouettes to apply to the sides. Birds were

chosen as a link to the Pulborough Brooks RSPB and Pulborough Duck Race; also, as pointed out by several children, the Pulborough Rugby Club, which has a swan as part of its logo. Miss Heasman and Mrs Benson, the Year 3 teachers, were very impressed with the amount of perseverance shown by the children throughout the day. Thank you to Chichester Festival Theatre for this wonderful opportunity. www.st-marys-pulborough.w-sussex.sch.uk

Clean- Credit: RAC ing the affected area, painting in the damaged section with a brush, allowing the paint to dry and finally polishing the area down to smooth the affected area with the rest of the paint is the common procedure. Wax may be worthwhile to give the damaged area additional protection. Ashington Parish Council Neighbourhood plan, Knepp safari & planning applications At the Parish Council meeting on 5th May we had Bellway Homes make a presentation on their initial proposals for the Neighbourhood Plan site ‘Land West of Ashington School’. Details can be seen on the Parish Council website (meeting minutes). The Parish Council raised concerns about the proposals deviating significantly from the Neighbourhood Plan and some other matters. It is anticipated that the plans will evolve over time. The Parish Council has ordered an oak tree and a commemorative plaque for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This will be planted near the Turnpike Way play area. In addition, it has ordered 30 trees (mixed rowan, cherry & silver birch) to be planted near the Community Centre as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project. Two Parish Councillors will be attending a Knepp Safari in July in a special event for Parish Councils to learn more about the ‘Weald to Waves’ initiative to connect the High Weald areas around St Leonards and the Ashdown Forest

transecting the National Park down the Arun and Adur River valleys, to restore ecosystems that directly interact with the Sussex Bay marine habitat restoration. A decision on the planning application for the new Tearoom at The Parish Yard was due 17th May. Several Parish Councillors and the Parish Clerk attended HDC’s ‘Big Conversation’ meeting on Thursday 19th May to find out that the Local Plan will be delayed until the Water Neutrality issue is sorted out and that ALL development, including our proposed Tearoom, must demonstrate Water Neutrality and this is a challenge. Chanctonbury Nurseries planning application – still no news on a decision on the proposed 74 homes plus open space, outdoor gym and sustainable links into the village. www.ashingtonpc.org.uk

A commemoration bench has been placed at the Abingworth football fields, and a specimen tree is being planted this autumn. Planning There is no change to the situation that most new housing schemes in the district remain held up by the need to meet 'water neutral' requirements, due to pressure on existing resources. Several current local planning proposals, e.g. the 25-house site at the ex-Rushfield Nursery, are affected. Construction of the last 75-house phase of the Abingworth development by Bellway Homes is in full swing, and will run through to late 2023. There is no further news yet regarding the proposal for 30 new homes at the site South of Furze Common Road, which the Parish Council has strongly objected to.

Storrington & Sullington Parish Council Public advised to take their own action on fair emissions Edited extracts from draft minutes of the Parish Council meeting on Wednesday 25th May 2022. HGV Restriction Zone on School Hill. County Councillor Marshall referred to WSCC’s Major Projects Manager’s recent communications regarding activity to address breaches of these restrictions. He explained that the planned measures include changes to the signage and a CCTV survey later in the year. Acoustic Camera Trials. Cllr Marshall reported that he had asked Andrew Griffith MP to consider applying for Storrington to be one of the 4 national trial sites; however, it had transpired that the MP had already committed his support for Bury Hill to be put forward. Air Quality Funding. Cllr Marshall had raised an enquiry with HDC about what plans were in place to utilise the available funding and he hoped that this would be addressed at the upcoming meeting of the Air Quality Steering Group. Funfair. The Clerk had been contacted by a member of the public who had raised concerns

about the emissions generated by vehicles and rides following the fun fair’s recent visit. It was suggested that she contact the Environmental Health Department to enquire whether there were any guidelines to be followed and if so to ensure the Fairground organiser was adhering to these. Other feedback had been received that the fair’s visit went without hitch and that future visits would be welcomed. Lloyds Chemist Opening Times, Members heard that the chemist would be closed on Saturdays and Sundays from July and concerns were raised about those people who worked during the week and/or used the chemist for their repeat prescriptions. The Clerk was asked to write to Lloyds to request that the decision be reviewed. Honorary Citizen Award. A nomination for this award had been put forward. Agreed that following some enquiries to be undertaken by the Clerk, this Honorary Citizenship should be awarded. (Editor - no further details in minutes) www.storrington-pc.gov.uk
