HEALTH + WELLNESS IN 2025
AS WE step into the new year, it’s a natural time to reflect on our goals and the changes we can make to improve our lives. Part of reaching new goals and growing is doing hard things. For each of us, this can look different. I try to exercise at least three to four times a week, five during a really good week. But sometimes it only happens once or twice, especially in winter when it’s cold and the days are short.
I’ll never forget a morning last year when my parents were visiting. They left early to get on the road around 5:30 a.m. Contemplating whether to head to spin class or go back to bed, my mom encouraged me saying, “You should go. You’ll feel better later.” She was right. I’ve never regretted a workout, and I always feel better afterward. That reminder has stuck with me. Whether it’s exercising, having a tough conversation, or tackling a task you’ve been putting off… just do it. You will look back with relief and be glad you did.
This year’s health and wellness issue is dedicated to helping you find balance and prioritize self-care. Inside, you’ll find ideas and practical tips for winter wellness on p. 34, inspiring stories from readers right here in our community who have faced adversity and become stronger because of it on p. 32, and insights to guide you on your journey to better health — mind, body, and spirit. Don’t miss our Health and Wellness Guide on p. 22, showcasing local businesses that offer valuable services and

resources to help you on your health and wellness journey.
On top of being home to incredible parks, trails, gyms, and activities, our community is alive with incredible
stories of people living out their dreams as a result of hard work and dedication. On p. 16, read about how Lauren Irving, who grew up in Suwanee, is performing with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s The Greatest Show on Earth. On p. 62, learn about Travis Hill, a wide receiver and cornerback for the Colorado Buffaloes, who won the Heisman trophy in December, an honor awarded to the top college football player in the nation.
Discover the professional women’s volleyball team, Atlanta Vibe, going into their second season (p. 18); the story behind Clayton Dental, a cornerstone in the community since 2003 (p. 10); and meet Nora, the passionate founder of Living Well Farmers Market (p. 70).
As you begin the new year, we hope this issue inspires you to take care of yourself, pursue your goals, and appreciate the people and stories that make our community so vibrant.
Here’s to a year of good health, happiness, and growth!

Clayton Dental
SUWANEE’S TRUSTED FAMILY AND COSMETIC DENTIST HAS BEEN SERVING COMMUNITY SMILES SINCE 2003
By Francesca Augello / Photos by Jon Rogers
R. FRANK CLAYTON started Clayton Dental in 2003 with four things: a passion for dentistry, a love for learning, a desire to master the craft, and a dream to serve the people within his community. Fast forward 21 years, and it’s safe to say Dr. Clayton’s goals have become a reality. He is now the owner of a successful dental office where he provides top-of-the-line dental care and cosmetic assistance. His compassion for both his patients and his
staff remains his motivation to keep working, and his business undoubtedly makes Suwanee a better place.
A Customer-Focused Practice
Clayton Dental is more than just a place to get one’s teeth cleaned; it’s a business that puts its customers at the forefront of its practice. The reason it remains one of the most successful dental offices in the region is because of its impeccable staff, friendly environment, and motivated owner. For example, one of the slogans on their website is “patients don’t wait here” — and that’s not just a recruitment tactic. When asked what differentiates his office from others in the area, Dr. Clayton says, “We actually run on time because we value
“MAKING A PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH THE COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WE SERVE IS WHAT MAKES GETTING UP IN THE MORNING AND HEADING TO WORK WORTH IT.”
people’s time. I ask my staff to go above and beyond what patients expect no matter what we do, so everybody here understands the level of excellence that is expected by me, and they constantly exceed it — that’s the key.” Upon walking inside, patients are met with a pleasant team of dental hygienists, dental assistants, sterile technicians, and front desk receptionists. Every member of the Clayton Dental team is skilled, intelligent, personable, and helpful; it’s these traits that comfort incoming patients and provide a positive environment for dental check-ups.
A Passion for Helping Others
Dr. Clayton, a Marietta native and University of North Carolina’s Adams School of Dentistry alumnus, credits the inspiration for his career to his father-inlaw, a facial plastic surgeon who “suggested that I take a look at dentistry because I wanted to blend business and science; dentistry is an excellent combination of both,” so that’s exactly what he did. However, Dr. Clayton is more than just a fan of cleaning people’s teeth, he’s also passionate about helping others excel both within his company and outside of it. He says, “Watching others grow and exceed what they’ve ever thought they could achieve has been the most rewarding part. I’m big on leadership and on people thriving at what they do, whether it’s dental or not. I really like trying to get people to go way beyond their comfort zone and fulfilling their goals/dreams.”
A man of many accomplishments, Dr. Clayton is a dentist, business owner, author, mentor, entrepreneur, and member of several dental associations, including the American Dental Association, Georgia Dental Association, and the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation. He is also the founder of the Atlanta
Center for Dental Excellence, an advocate for giving back to the whole dental industry.
“In addition to dentistry, I consult with other dentists, dental companies, and dental business banks regarding business efforts, marketing strategies, and elevating the dental industry. I try to reach beyond this office and into the business/dental community.”
Clayton Dental’s success is undeniable, and although Dr. Clayton is convinced the reason for that is because he “passes out a lot of chocolate and Starbucks gift cards to his patients, so they’re caffeinated, sugared up, and happy,” it’s the
business’s dedication to their customers, mastering the craft, and redefining dentistry that sets them apart from the rest. Dr. Clayton believes “there’s always stuff to learn,” and his goal — both personally and professionally — is “to keep the excellence and care that [Clayton Dental] gives; to maintain the culture that we have set.” Clayton Dental’s ability to put care at the center of its practice is motivated by the following idea: “Teeth can get boring; it’s the people behind the teeth that matter. Making a personal connection with the community of people we serve is what makes getting up in the morning and heading to work worth it.” ■
Clayton Dental is located at 4320 Suwanee Dam Road in Suwanee. For more information go to ClaytonDental.com.
DR. FRANK CLAYTON'S 6 TIPS FOR MAINTAINING DENTAL HEALTH:
1. Always floss. “If I were stuck on a desert island, I’d rather have floss over a toothbrush any day. It’s THAT important.”
2. Brush twice a day. Make sure to brush twice for two minutes every day.
3. Use an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are more effective than manual.
4. Floss BEFORE you brush. It is more effective to floss, use mouthwash, then brush.
5. Brush your tongue. Bacteria will accumulate greatly on your tongue so brushing is important. Be careful not to over brush and break the skin. Brush back and forth and side to side and then rinse your mouth with water.
6. Eat well.
INVESTMENT STRATEGIES
BY: Bill and Cindi Porter, AILERON INVESTMENT ADVISORS
Is the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) a good tool for individual investors?
PROBABLY NOT IF YOU INVEST IN INDIVIDUAL STOCKS (VERSUS MUTUAL FUNDS).
Consider this:
The top 3 Dow Jones performers in 2024 (as of Nov 21, 2024) were Walmart + 60.3%, Goldman Sachs, + 53.9%, and American Express + 53.1%.1
The 3 worst Dow Jones performers were Boeing – 44.04%, Nike – 31.92%, and Merck – 11.46%. 2
The DJIA reflects the performance of 30 stocks of leading U.S. blue-chip companies. If you owned all 30 stocks your average annual return as of November 19, 2024, would have been 15%. If you owned only some of the 30 stocks your return could have been significantly better or worse.
The index has undergone several changes over the years. In 1916, the DJIA components were updated from 12 stocks to 20. It was increased to 30 stocks in 1928, which has remained constant since then. Yet none of the original 30 stocks are still part of the current 30 members of the Dow Jones index. The last original stock was General Electric which was removed in 2018. In early November of 2024, Nvidia replaced Intel as part of the 30-member lineup. The composition of DJIA has changed 59 times since its inception. Other big-name companies that have been removed from the Dow Jones include AT&T, Sears, and General Motors. 3 DJIA, the S&P 500, and NASDAQ are each an index comprised of many stocks in the various sectors of the overall economy. You can invest in the entire index of each and earn the average rate of return or loss. Conversely, you can invest in individual companies within each index with varying results (i.e., Walmart + 60.3%, Boeing – 44.04%, or DJIA +15%).

RETURN PERFORMANCE
Circus entertainer Lauren Irving makes a dazzling return home with “The Greatest Show on Earth”
STORY BY FRANCESCA AUGELLO / PHOTOS COURTESY FELD ENTERTAINMENT
IF LAUREN
“GWINNETT IN ITSELF IS SO UNIQUE BECAUSE OF ITS EDUCATION SYSTEM AND ITS APPRECIATION FOR THE ARTS. I THINK BEING IN THAT ENVIRONMENT REALLY HELPED ME; IT WAS ENCOURAGING.”
Irving’s journey to becoming the professional performer she is today could be summed up by the intersection of two ideologies, they would be “talent” and “passion.” Not only are those themes evident within her career, but they are focal points that she holds at the forefront of her life. Lauren was born in Norcross, raised in Suwanee, and attended both North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge high schools (the latter being her alma mater). Always a fan of the arts, Lauren attributes much of her growth and evolution to her Gwinnett County upbringing. She says, “Gwinnett in itself is so unique because of its education system and its appreciation for the arts. I think being in that environment really helped me;
it was encouraging.” Now, she’s returning to Duluth in the role of Aria for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s The Greatest Show on Earth, and her excitement to fulfill this role in front of an audience full of friends and family is tangible.
A PASSION FOR MUSIC AND PEOPLE
Lauren’s past professional endeavors vary in specifics, yet they both hold her two greatest passions at the center: music and people. She lived out her dream role as a performer at Walt Disney World and was able to travel around the globe during her time as an actor with Norwegian Cruise Lines. However, her role in The Greatest Show on Earth has been special for her in a way she didn’t anticipate. She says, “Becoming a part of this community was something that I didn’t know I needed or would fulfill me so much. I work with the most unique, talented, hardworking individuals every week, but in general, making people feel happy, amazed, and inspired is what I absolutely love.”
BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
An advocate for humanity and kindness, Lauren strives to use her platform and experiences
to bring people together –whether she’s performing on the stage or having a conversation. When asked about why she considers the circus to be so special, she responds, “it’s the importance of human connection. We could put on glitzy lights, costumes, this effect and that, but at the end of the day there’s something so magical about the human connection that’s formed at the circus – it’s what makes the experience so successful and impactful for people.”
Lauren’s homecoming will take place in February of 2025 as she performs at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta before making her way to Duluth’s Gas South Arena. She is enthusiastic to return to the very stage she crossed as a Peachtree Ridge graduate – this time in a role she describes as being “completely her” – and
hopes to see familiar faces in the audience. When asked to reflect on this experience she says, “‘Full circle’ is the best way to describe how I feel, but at the same time it’s even more than that. To think that there was a time where I had no idea what to expect for my life, and [to see] how it turned out even
better than what I imagined… fills me with so much gratitude. I can't help but smile and feel fulfilled.” ■
Visit Ringling.com to get your tickets to The Greatest Show on Earth today! February 14-17 at State Farm Arena (Atlanta) and February 21-23 at Gas South Arena (Duluth).

HE VIBE'S 28-match season, kicks off with their first game on the road on January 10, leading up to their home opener at Gas South Arena on January 16. This season will see the return of league MVP, Leah Edmond, as well as Libero of the Year (or best defensive player), Morgan Hentz. In the recent draft on November 25, Atlanta added five draftees from college programs, including No. 1 draft pick, Merritt Beason, from final-four bound program Nebraska.
According to Head Coach Kayla Banwarth, “The overall experience of a Vibe match can be described in three words: passionate, energizing, and fun! The atmosphere of the matches is super invigorating. There is no doubt you will have an absolute blast watching the best volleyball in America!”
Volleyball is currently the fastest growing sport in the U.S., giving our vibrant city an opportunity to invest in a pro volleyball team. Gas South Arena holds up to 13,000 fans, giving the Vibe a tremendous amount of space to show off such a high-level professional team.
When asked about game chants, Anna Porter, Vibe Communications Manager, shares, “We love our fans cheering at matches as they truly create a thrilling environment. We have the classic A! T! L! chant. Another great one is at set point, when the Vibe only needs one more point to win the set, the fans hold up an ‛A’ with their fingers (middle and pointer finger faced down) and when the Vibe wins the set, the flip it to be a ‛V ’”

“ THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE MATCHES IS SUPER INVIGORATING. THERE IS NO DOUBT YOU WILL HAVE AN ABSOLUTE BLAST WATCHING THE BEST VOLLEYBALL IN AMERICA! ”
When asked about recommending mindfulness tips, player Morgan Hentz shares on the Vibe’s Instagram channel her own practices of journaling, stretching, drinking tea, and reading a book to unwind. She also recommends yoga for mindfulness and self-reflection. For fueling on game days, Hentz starts the morning with a bagel, fruits such as berries, and cottage cheese for some protein. She drinks

chai tea latte with almond milk and a little added collagen. Hentz stays hydrated with Liquid IVs or Body Armor. Before the match during the Vibe’s pre-game meal, she recommends something with a good source of protein like a chicken sandwich. Equally as important is how you fuel after the match. She typically does some sort of protein shake and when they get a win, Hentz sometimes likes to go to Waffle House for some fun.

I get bored sometimes. How can my human make life more exciting?
Purrs: Boredom? Not on my watch. My human changes my toys regularly, so it’s always a surprise. I love sitting by the window, watching the birds. Sometimes, they hide treats in puzzle toys — I get to use my brilliant hunting skills. Clicker training sessions? Yep, I’m learning tricks and getting treats. Brainpower + belly happiness = purrfection!
How much exercise do I really need?
Tail flick: I need about 20-30 minutes of daily play. It’s like a gym workout, but for my paws!
HEALTH & FITNESS QA
By Luke the Cat, The Expert “Meowtivator”
Kittens like me go wild, but older cats might prefer slower games. The key? Know your catitude and keep us moving. My human watches me closely and adjusts our playtime accordingly.
What if I’m an older or arthritic cat? How can my human help?
Soft purr: Older whiskers need gentle care. Thankfully, my vet offers something called Solensia — an injection that helps ease my arthritis pain — so I can move around more comfortably and feel like my playful self again. My human uses soft toys and builds ramps to help me climb to my favorite spots. Low-impact play and lots of snuggles? Yes, please!
How can my human check if I’m in purrfect shape?
Head boop: Humans can gently feel our ribs (not too much, please!). If they can’t feel them, it might be time for more playtime. Changes in my energy or eating habits? That’s my secret code for “vet visit needed.” Annual checkups help keep me healthy and ready for more adventures. ■

Don’t Make It Weird:
Putting Mental Health at the Forefront of the Wellness Conversation
BY FRANCESCA AUGELLO
Don’t Make It Weird
(DMIW) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, located in Buford, that strives to dismantle the negative stigmas surrounding conversations about mental health. As Kristina Miller –the Vice President and Director of the organization – says, “We’re talking about mental health, so let’s really talk about mental health; even when it gets hard or uncomfortable "
Started by Buford native and former Ohio State football player Harry Miller and his mom Kristina, this organization was created to provide safe, educational, and supportive spaces for members of the Gwinnett County community and beyond –a place of refuge, security, and fellowship. It’s been open to the public since August 2024, and the positive reaction it has received has been overwhelming. Kristina says one of the most significant lessons she’s learned since DMIW opened its doors is “there are a lot more people in the community who need help than anyone’s aware of. Within the three months since our opening, we’ve already had engagement with 251 people… obviously the need is great.” One can utilize DMIW’s resources
broken, and that people aren’t afraid to talk about [mental health struggles]. I want them to come here, see this place, and realize it’s not scary at all.”
One of DMIW’s main efforts is providing a safe, secure, and comfortable environment that encourages people struggling with any form of mental distress to formulate connections and communicate their troubles. Kristina elaborates, “Having someone to talk to is so significant… many people either don’t have somebody to talk to or don’t have someone they feel comfortable talking to, and opening up to a stranger that you know is solely there to listen can be a lot easier. They don’t have to be
a therapist, but as long as they’re safe, trustworthy, won’t judge you, and there’s a willingness to share experiences with them, they’re the perfect solution. If you can’t find that person, you come here. It’s really that simple.” Promoting genuine camaraderie and spreading positivity are DMIW’s prerogatives, and it's that combination that has made them a critical staple in this community.
“Being able to help somebody is huge and it causes a ripple effect,” Kristin a says. “ First you help somebody, then they go out into the community and not only help others but spread the word about DMIW – that’s the goal ” Don’t Make It Weird’s ability to shine a light on the dark side of mental health is refreshing, honest, and necessary. Their objective is to ignite a movement that focuses on caring for each other, providing support, and practicing compassion to the surrounding community. The legacy DMIW wishes to leave behind is centered around “making a difference; even if we just help one person… it matters that they know that somebody cares. It’s why we keep the doors open and the lights on ” Harry Miller, the President of and inspiration behind DMIW once said, “There are not many jokes nor stories that make light of mental health; the topic is rather morose. However, I believe that it is these heavy subjects and these somber undertakings that require the lightest speech and the brightest actions ,” and that’s exactly what DMIW has set out to accomplish ■
“THERE ARE A LOT MORE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY WHO NEED HELP THAN ANYONE’S AWARE OF. WITHIN THE THREE MONTHS SINCE OUR OPENING, WE’VE ALREADY HAD ENGAGEMENT WITH 251 PEOPLE…”

COMMUNITY WELLNESS SUCCESS STORIES
Aspire to heal: Julia Kien’s inspirational story about her battle with breast cancer and the gym that rescued her
IKE MOST young people, I thought I was invincible – I ate whatever I wanted and moved as little as I pleased. Before I found Aspire, the last time I stepped foot in a gym was to pass through it in order to attend a yoga class on the other side of the building.
Everything changed in 2019 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 22 years old. I went from being blissfully indifferent about my health to thinking about it every second of every day. Over the next few years, I was forced to settle into my new life of surgeries, scans, shots, and pills.
By 2022, I had built myself back up from the toll of cancer treatment – mentally and emotionally, at least. But I knew that if I wanted to enjoy a long, full life of traveling and Disneybounding, I needed to work on my physical strength. Having never felt comfortable in regular gyms, I searched for women’s only gyms and found Aspire. After weeks of hesitating and contemplating, I finally called Anthony and haven’t looked back since.
For the first time in my life, I was able to stick with a weekly workout routine. I was motivated to show up
consistently because the coaches at Aspire truly believed that I was capable of being strong and getting stronger.
When I had a cancer recurrence in 2023 and was faced with six months of chemo and radiation, it was the strength I had gained from Aspire that allowed me to fight again. In fact, it saved my life.
I may not be invincible still, but when I’m at Aspire – well, I sure feel damn close!
- Julia Kien
“I may not be invincible still, but when I’m at Aspire –well, I sure feel damn close! ”
Stronger than ever: A cancer survivor's story of love and hope
I am a breast cancer survivor. This unfortunately was my 40th birthday surprise. Yes… not a good birthday surprise. I had two daughters in elementary school and the thought of not being able to see my girls forge their pathway in life was devastating. Thank goodness I had a wonderful husband who took our wedding vows “through sickness and health” to heart. He was my rock.
After three lumpectomies, it was decided I would have to have a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy. This journey took nine months of my life. I had great friends who stepped in and took our girls to practices and games. Meals were abundant. Family was invaluable. What did I learn at the end of this journey? God, faith, family, and friends can get you through anything. I am a stronger woman now and I feel God has given me a second chance at life. My purpose is now to serve others and share my journey with those who have been given the same devastating news.
I want to inspire and give them hope. My daughters also benefited through this journey. They relied on each other during my battle, and they have a strong bond due to unfortunate circumstances. My marriage is going on 42 years now. My husband never looked at me differently and was always there to lift me up. Whether you are looking to be more active or find yourself going through something really tough, you can do it! There is power in prayer, never give up, and rely on family and friends. They want to be there for you.
I’m 62 years old now. Fighting cancer changed my life and I want to be as healthy as I can. Staying fit is very important to me. I enjoy 3-mile walks with my dog just about every day. Brisk walking is perfect at my age. Enjoying nature on trails in the woods and of course taking in the Chattahoochee River are my two favorites to hike. Suwanee has such great trails to enjoy! I also try to eat healthy. Fruits and vegetables are the key. Yes, I have a sweet tooth that sometimes prevails, but we need to treat ourselves sometime!

Zeal for Zumba: How a fitness program saved Heather Hale’s life
As someone who has always had a passion for fitness, it was extremely frustrating when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease at a young age. I experienced high blood pressure, weight gain, fatigue, and a laundry list of issues. When I discovered Zumba, a light bulb went off. I started losing weight, lowered my medications, and found both my passion and my tribe! I have now been a Zumba Fitness/group fitness instructor for 17 years! I can truly say I have found what I love to do, and despite being told I would have fertility issues, I gave birth to my first child in December of 2022! I am so grateful to Zumba for helping me find what I love to do and helping me maintain a healthy lifestyle while having fun!

Winter Wellness
Embrace the cold and stay active all winter long with indoor workouts, community fitness, and cold therapy trends.
BY ALICIA CARTER
S THE temperature drops this winter, it can be tempting to hibernate under a pile of blankets with a cup of hot cocoa. But as the days get shorter and the chill sets in, it’s more important than ever to stay active and focused on your health. Not only will regular exercise keep your energy levels high, but it can also help combat the winter blues and improve your mood. So, don’t let the cold keep you from your fitness goals! From indoor workouts to embracing the
cold with innovative wellness trends, there are plenty of ways to stay active and healthy this winter.
Ice Hockey
Perfect for those who love the thrill of competition, ice hockey is a great winter activity that keeps you on your toes — literally! Whether you're hitting the rink for a pick-up game or working on your skating skills, ice hockey offers a full-body workout that improves endurance, strength, and coordination. It’s also a great way to socialize with
friends and get your heart pumping in a fun, fast-paced environment. The Atlanta IceForum in Duluth is a great place to play or practice your skills. With two regulation NHL-size rinks, skate rentals, professional lessons, and a snack bar to refuel after your game, it’s the perfect spot to embrace the winter fun. The IceForum offers both public skating sessions and hockey leagues, as well as private lessons for those looking to improve. The Atlanta IceForum is located at 2300 Satellite Blvd. in Duluth. Learn more at IceForum.com.
Ice Skating
Ice skating is not only a graceful winter sport, but also an excellent full-body workout. It engages your core, strengthens your legs, improves flexibility, and boosts your cardiovascular health. Whether you’re gliding smoothly or building your confidence on the ice, every session helps improve balance and coordination. In addition to the Atlanta IceForum in Duluth, which offers public skating sessions yearround, the Ice Rink at Sugar Hill is another local option. This popular spot is open through February and features a covered outdoor rink, perfect for a fun, active outing with family and friends. The Ice Rink at
Sugar Hill is located at 5039 W. Broad St. in downtown Sugar Hill. For hours and more information, visit HaidRink.com.
Indoor Walking and Running
When the weather outside is less than inviting, indoor walking and running are great options to keep your fitness routine on track. Local facilities like George Pierce Park Gym in Suwanee and the E Center at Sugar Hill offer spacious, well-maintained indoor tracks for walkers and runners of all levels. These tracks provide a comfortable environment to stay active, no matter the temperature, and help you maintain your fitness goals throughout the winter months.
Indoor Cycling
Cycling is a great winter workout, but when it's too cold or dark to ride outdoors, hop on a stationary bike. Spin classes are offered at most area gyms, and many come with highenergy instructors who will get you sweating while blasting your favorite tunes. The stationary bike provides an excellent cardio workout, plus it's easy on the joints, making it ideal for those looking to maintain endurance and burn calories without the impact.
Indoor Pools
When winter arrives, most people forget about swimming. But the truth is, indoor pools are a great way to stay fit year-round. Swimming provides a full-body workout that improves cardiovascular health, builds muscle, and
increases flexibility, all while being gentle on the joints. Many local community centers feature indoor pools, including Bethesda Park Aquatic Center in Lawrenceville, Bogan Park Aquatic Center in Buford, and Collins Hill Park Aquatic Center in Lawrenceville, among others.
Pickleball
If you’re in Buford, check out Pickle & Social (2925 Buford Drive), a fun spot offering indoor pickleball courts, along with food and drinks, creating a great social atmosphere while you stay active.
Take Advantage of Community Centers
If you’re feeling a bit stir-crazy and need a change of pace, head to a local community center. Many in the Suwanee area offer indoor basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts where you can play with friends or join a league. The Suwanee Sports Academy (3640 Burnette Road), for example, features a variety of sports facilities, including indoor courts for basketball and pickleball, perfect for staying active during the colder months. Another great option is The E Center at Sugar Hill (5019 W. Broad St.), which offers indoor courts for pickleball and tennis, as well as fitness classes and open gym time.
Group Yoga and Pilates
When the temperatures drop, there’s no better way to warm up and stay centered than with a group yoga or Pilates class. Yoga is an excellent way to increase flexibility, build strength, and calm the mind during the colder months. The benefits are both physical and mental, as yoga helps relieve tension, improve circulation, and boost your mood — especially important as daylight wanes.
In addition to yoga, Pilates is a fantastic low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening your core, improving posture, and increasing flexibility. Whether you're using a mat or reformer machines, Pilates
helps build a solid foundation for your fitness routine while preventing the typical aches and pains that come with a more sedentary winter lifestyle.
Downtown Buford’s ToLife! Yoga and Pilates offers a variety of indoor yoga and Pilates classes for all levels, from gentle stretches to more invigorating flows. Whether you're new to yoga or Pilates, or a seasoned practitioner, the welcoming atmosphere and expert instructors will guide you through
a practice that leaves you feeling both relaxed and energized.
ToLife! Yoga and Pilates is located at 554 W. Main St., Suite 150, Building B in downtown Buford. For more information, visit ToLifeYogaandPilates.com.
Embracing the Cold: Cold Therapy Wellness Trends
While most of us prefer to stay warm during winter, a growing trend is emerging that encourages embracing the cold — and it’s not just for thrill-seekers. Cold plunging and cryotherapy are becoming increasingly popular wellness practices, with potential health benefits that go beyond a mere shock to the system.
Cold Plunging
Cold plunging involves immersing your body in cold water, typically between 45°F and 55°F, for a brief period, usually around 3-5 minutes. While the idea may sound daunting, the benefits are compelling. Cold exposure is said to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, boost the immune system, and even elevate your mood by stimulating the production of endorphins. Many people report feeling invigorated and rejuvenated after a cold plunge. You can try it at local spots like Suwanee’s Sathya Hot Yoga and Wellness (4320 Suwanee Dam Road), or if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, consider adding an ice bath or cold shower to your wellness routine at home.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy takes cold therapy to the next level by exposing the body to sub-zero temperatures in a specially designed chamber for a few minutes. This ultracold treatment is believed to speed up muscle recovery, reduce pain and inflammation, and promote overall wellness. Professional athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike are
turning to cryotherapy for its post-workout recovery benefits. If you're looking to try something new this winter, cryotherapy could be a unique way to push your recovery — and your mental toughness — to the next level. Lucky for us, there are many local places to try it out, including Revive Wellness in Lawrenceville, Vitality Med Spa in Suwanee, and more.
Here are my top three family therapist tips to start your year off right:
HEALTHY HABITS
Kick-start your year with improved well-being for the whole family.
he new year is here, and many families are championing to start new healthy habits. You may have visions of family walks, healthy meals, and screen-free evenings full of laughter and fun. But, there are still holiday desserts laying around and no one is putting down their screens to talk or take a walk in the cold. It can be tough to make changes, especially changes that include the whole family, but it is possible. Let’s make this year different by changing some common family habits that get in the way of family wellness.
1Develop Positive Conflict Habits:
➤ How we handle conflict makes a big impact either positively or negatively on family well-being. One of the common triggers for stress and anxiety I hear from children, teens, and adults is that someone they love is frequently mad at them or yelling at them. Often our brains will flag this type of conflict as a threat and have a fight or flight response that could lead to difficulty sleeping, concentrating, eating, or isolating from others. To avoid this type of conflict, some people may stay on screens for long periods of time, isolate in their room, work excessively, or be combative. On the flip side, if conflict is handled well by communicating when family members are calm and seeking ways to repair the relationship or find solutions, conflict can actually be an opportunity to build closer relationships and improve wellbeing. This type of conflict can lead to a sense of belonging, increased motivation, emotion regulation, and more family engagement. A way to have calm, effective conversations is to take a 30-minute break if you start to notice you are having a body response during the conversation such as muscle tension, increase in heart rate, clinched jaw, or hot face. Spend 30 minutes going for a walk or listening to music and then come back for a more effective conversation when everyone is calm.
...if conflict is handled well by communicating when family members are calm and seeking ways to repair the relationship or find solutions, conflict can actually be an opportunity to build closer relationships and improve well-being.
Prioritize Sleep:
➤ Sleep plays an important role in how well our brain and body function. When we are well rested we have more energy, motivation, and more emotion regulation leading to less negative conflict and anxiousness. Some habits that could be impacting your sleep patterns are drinking alcohol and caffeine, watching screens or gaming before bed, and going to sleep at inconsistent times. Feeling anxious or keyed up can also impact the quality of your sleep. Anxiety often increases when we are trying to avoid something such as a feeling, a thought, or a task. Even though it sounds counter-intuitive, try to be curious about the anxiety you are feeling. For example, if you find yourself trying to avoid a feeling such as sadness or loneliness, try to get curious about what the feeling means and when it started. It could be really helpful information for you to pay attention to or share with a loved one.
Establish Family Check-In Routines:
➤ Check-ins can be whenever your family routinely has a quiet moment such as at the dinner table, before bed, or in a monthly family meeting. Ask your kids and partner for feedback on how they feel about the family and what they need more or less of in the household. Be open and curious about the feedback you receive. Often family members tend to make assumptions about how others are feeling or what they need, when a regular check-in could help to establish a clear understanding of ways to improve wellness in the family. ■

STILLFIRE BREWING CELEBRATES TWO NEW PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS WINS
RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT:
Exploring the Art of Asian Fusion Cuisine
KITCHEN MASTER OFFERS A UNIQUE DINING EXPERIENCE BY BLENDING TRADITIONAL TAIWANESE AND JAPANESE CUISINE WITH AMERICAN INFLUENCES.
RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT:
STEPPING INTO Kitchen Master feels like stepping into another region, one characterized by careful curation and exquisite taste. Located just off Exit 111 in Suwanee, the restaurant brings a touch of luxury dining to an area that needed some love.
Since opening in August to immediate positive reviews, the restaurant has quickly established itself as a destination in the community, many nights with a full house, a line at the door, and satisfied guests. Owner and visionary Ian Peng shared, “To me, one of the most rewarding things is having a night where everyone enjoys their food, everyone walks out happy. I love seeing the customer smiling and excited to come back and try more.”
“I kind of do everything around here: manage the front, the back of house, set the menu, train the staff on the menu, how to prepare each dish from top to bottom, as well as maintain consistency and quality of everything.” Peng, who's worked in Suwanee restaurants since he was 15, got his professional start at the Art Institute of Atlanta where he studied culinary arts. “Towards the end, they kind of help you build a concept and that's when I realized this might be for me,” Peng says . “I like my food and how I prepare it, so I thought, let's open up a place and share my taste with the community.”
The first Kitchen Master restaurant location was in Dallas, Texas, where it gained momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite all odds. Peng, just 22 years old at the time, says their bold choice to open in May of 2020 put a spotlight on them and the Dallas Morning News ran an interview with him. From there, a relationship with some chefs in Taiwan, where Peng was born, allowed him to open his second location in Dallas in April of 2023. Peng says this helped him not only test his menu on the different demographics of the respective regions, but gain inspiration from developments overseas.
A Diverse Menu
With a growing population in Suwanee and an increasingly diverse community, Peng believes an Asian fusion restaurant like Kitchen Master offers something for everyone. “My whole goal is to create a menu that appeals to everyone — dishes that attract different cultures and encourage them to come back and explore more, trying more authentic options each time. Over time, I want to introduce them to more authentic Taiwanese cuisine.”
Whether you’re craving some handmade dumplings and delicious soup, or specialty sushi rolls and cocktails, Kitchen Master’s menu is sure to impress everyone.
Take the lamb chops , for example. Inspired by Spanish chimichurri sauces, Peng crafted his own handmade aioli to bring in that Asian flare. “I kind of saw the light at lemongrass. It has such a pungent flavor that mixes well with these herbs.” He extracted the lemongrass and made a lemongrass-infused oil to mix into the chimichurri sauce. “Every bite is consistent.”
If that wasn’t enticing enough, they paired the lamb chops with Hoisin sauce Brussels sprouts , effectively mixing an American vegetable not commonly seen in Asian cuisine with a staple flavor from the region. Kitchen Master’s braised ribs are sweeter than they would be in Asian cuisine, and are mixed with their own version of barbecue sauce using soy sauce and Chinese spices tossed in a honey glaze. “It's one of the dishes I want to focus on to get everyone situated first and then open them up to the more authentic dishes,” Peng says
Georgia Connection
Although Peng grew up and went to school in Suwanee, he was born in Taiwan where he spent time around restaurants and learned their traditions at an early age before moving to Suwanee when he was nine. He finds his culinary balance in not only his upbringing, but his personal life, too. “My wife is from Blakely, Georgia, so her family is as American as it gets,” Peng shares. “When we first got together, I would use her as my taste tester, and would actually have pretty decent results; the stuff that she liked, the crowd loved, and the stuff she didn't like, didn't do as well.”
Peng’s attention to detail is matched only by his commitment to delivering an exceptional customer experience. “What sets us apart is our dedication to customer satisfaction,” Peng says . “We train our staff to guide customers toward the choices they’ll enjoy. If something doesn’t match their palate, we always go the extra mile to make it right and ensure they leave happy.”
Like any Asian fusion restaurant, the balance between tradition and innovation is integral to the concept. While Peng is keen on putting his ear to the ground, some dishes are best kept consistent. “Our soup dumplings are as authentic as they get,” says Peng, who explains that since the menu item is already a popular dish in the area, he’s more focused on enhancing it with quality ingredients like Berkshire pork and more precision in cooking. “Everything for our dumplings is measured in grams so that it never changes at all, at any point,” he says. “We do it from scratch. Nothing is bought premade. Everything is always at the freshest state.”
Other traditional dishes include the beef noodle soup, Taiwan’s national dish, which is a tribute to Peng’s birthplace. They use a 72-hour braised beef bone stock as their base, let it simmer for 72 hours, skim it, and constantly care for it. “It's as aromatic as it gets, topped with some beef shank that we braise in-house and then some bok choy,” he says. “It's a dish that we pride ourselves on.”
Another innovative menu offering is the Wagyu Sando, an A5 Japanese
Wagyu topped with caramelized miso butter onions, served on a piece of milk bread, and drizzled with Japanese barbecue sauce. “That one you usually see at a higher price, but honestly, my main goal is for everybody to enjoy the luxury ingredients we use,” Peng says, “so I try to price it reasonably and generally give customers a pretty generous portion.”
The Bora Bora roll is another popular option, a fried shrimp tempura and imitation crab mix with some black pepper and salt, topped with a seared Hokkaido scallop, honey mayo, and miso butter all caramelized with a torch and garnished with some microgreens.
Dedication to Quality Ingredients
Peng shops for his ingredients according to quality, sometimes getting his fish directly from Japan via a direct messaging app with suppliers. “We don't try to cut costs on that. That is something that we really prioritize.” It is this dedication to quality that allows Kitchen Master to be a healthier option than some of its competitors. Peng
likes to curate his menu offerings with a good balance of protein and vegetables, and they use less oil in their stir frys to “promote a lighter, more refreshing taste.” They also offer many vegetarian and vegan options. “We're trying to kind of bring on more strictly vegan items, mainly on our dumpling side.”
Peng plans to bring in more luxury ingredients at a modest price. “I'm planning on rolling out a sushi hand-roll taco with A5 Wagyu and foie gras (duck liver). I tried that combination out on a few customers already, and I've received really good feedback.”
With a focus on quality ingredients and a commitment to customer satisfaction, Peng is working hard to establish Kitchen Master as the premier Asian fusion restaurant in the area, earning the recognition and loyalty of the community. ■

Kiwanis of North Gwinnett is creating the best of both worlds by hosting their annual Father Daughter Valentine dance this February, and it’s sure to be the perfect place to make memories that will last a lifetime.
Valentine’s Day is full of delightful and sentimental traditions, and a great way to commemorate the lighthearted and tender holiday is by attending the Kiwanis Father Daughter dance. Grab your daughters, get them all dolled up, and watch core memories be formed as their dads treat them to a night full of dancing, laughs, and loads of fun. Plus, this event allows participants of all ages, so no daughter will feel left out!
This year there will be three opportunities to attend the dance; February 7 from 7 to 9 p.m., or February 8th from either 5 to 7 p.m. or 8 to 10 p.m. It will be held at the Braselton Civic Center, and the dress code is semi-formal. It costs $100 for the initial pair, and $10 extra for each additional daughter. For more information, visit NorthGwinnettKiwanis.com.
UGA Extension Gwinnett Kicks Off Annual Plant Sale Fundraiser
THERE’S NOTHING quite like the joy that comes from treating yourself to a new plant. That is, unless the money that went toward purchasing that specific plant was part of a fundraiser benefiting a local youth organization! 4-H clubs are some of the most prestigious nonprofit organizations in the state of Georgia. Their overarching goal is to improve the next generation’s quality of life, and they do so by promoting positive youth development, facilitating learning, and engaging youth in the work of their community. The Annual Plant Sale Fundraiser is notorious for raising money for the 4-H and Master Gardener projects, with last year’s event contributing almost $5,000 for agricultural and resource planning.
This year’s annual plant presale will be held from January 2nd to February 28th. With a wide variety of fruit and ornamental plants that thrive in Georgia soil to choose from (apples,
blueberries, pears, azaleas, camellias, and hydrangeas) there is sure to be a product that appeals to everyone – even those who are only just beginning their green thumb journey. Gwinnett Community Services Deputy Department Director, Regina Miller, says, “Fundraising is just one of the many ways to help cover costs of activities for our young members. We’re grateful for the continued support of our community, and look forward to another successful event”.
Preorder purchases can be made in person at the UGA Extension Gwinnett office located at 750 South Perry St., Suite 400 in Lawrenceville or by mailing in an order form available at GwinnettExtension. com. The pickup and bonus sale is from 9 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 at the Davis Road entrance of the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds, located at 2405 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville. For more details, visit GwinnettExtension.com.
North Gwinnett’s Girls Flag Football Team Sets the New Standard for Local Girls’ Sports
EVERYONE HAS fond memories with flag football: snatching your opponent’s belt at the last second, completing a play that successfully blindsides your rivals, or sprinting into the end zone untouched. It’s a game that requires skill, passion, and — above all — spirit. North Gwinnett High School has taken the essence of the game up a notch by officiating a flag football league, and — in true NG athletics fashion — this team is one to beat.
Forty young women from freshman to seniors make up both a JV and a Varsity team, and their determined athleticism and NG pride has helped them rise to the top — securing the Varsity team’s spot in the playoffs for the 2024-2025 season as undefeated region champions. The JV team is just as impressive, ending with a whopping 15-0 record. They’re known for outscoring their opponents 545-8; not only dominating the field, but only allowing their rivals to make a single touchdown the
entire season. Watching this league of girls make history is undeniably inspiring, and for them to do so with such success speaks on their athletic abilities as well as their passion for the sport.
Led by Coaches
Brian Anderson and Major Carlberg, flag football has taken the NG student body by storm; gaining popularity in a way the school hasn’t seen before. Anderson says, “The interest for this sport has jumped so much, especially at our school. We’ve got good kids that work hard and I think they have fun.” There’s no denying that football is a cultural staple in the South, and it’s exciting to see young women encouraged to partake in the tradition as well.
You can support the North Gwinnett Flag Football team by attending games and keep up with them through their website, NGHSBulldogsAthletics.com. Stay updated on their stats by visiting MaxPreps.com.
New Cafe Produces Opportunities for the Special Needs Community
SUGAR HILL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY STUDENT NAMED NATIONAL
MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALIST
THERE’S A new cafe in town, and it’s sure to bring positivity and opportunity like Buford hasn’t seen before. Brightside Cafe has been a dream of co-owners Jennifer Elinburg and Carrie Walton for over a decade. Jennifer, a Buford-born North Gwinnett HS alum, was first inspired to pursue this business venture as a result of seeing the positive impact students with special needs have within her own classroom. It didn’t take long for her to get Carrie, a Gwinnett County native and six year Buford resident with a passion for coffee, on board. They quickly recognized the area’s high demand for a cafe that put love, compassion, and opportunity at its center, saying, “This community needs it; we’re opening this business for the community. There’s nothing in this area that employs individuals with special needs.” Upon discovering that their combined aspirations created an objective that would truly make a difference,
Jennifer and Carrie took it upon themselves to open their dream business right in the heart of downtown Buford.
Brightside Cafe, located in the Tannery Row complex at 554 W. Main Street, plans to open in January, and it’s anticipated to be the perfect spot for people who want a delicious treat served with a smile. Brightside Cafe supplies espresso products, fresh-fruit smoothies, and a crowd favorite, Choc Corn – white chocolate covered puffcorn provided by Lawrenceville’s Special Kneads and Treats, Inc. “The Choc Corn goes like wildfire,” Carrie says. With a logo that says, “where drinks and friends make the best blend,” customers are sure to enjoy their beverages, goodies, and overall experience with every visit.
When asked about Brightside Cafe’s legacy, Carrie and Jennifer say, “We want to be remembered for being able to make a difference in these kids’ lives and making them feel like they can succeed. The real secret to this business, though, is that they’re blessing us, we’re not blessing them. I don’t think people realize that when they come in here, they’re going to be the ones that are blessed.”
Brightside Cafe is located at 554 W Main St., in Buford. For more information go to BrightsideCafeBuford.com.
NOLAN SWIFT, a senior at Sugar Hill Christian Academy (SHCA), was named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. In its 70th year, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), announced the names of more than 16,000 Semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth $26 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. Over 1.3 million high school juniors entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
SERVING, SUPPORTING, AND SPREADING JOY: A REMARKABLE 2024 FOR NORTH GWINNETT CO-OP
THE NORTH Gwinnett’s Co-Op has been serving those in need in our community since 1991. Through community partnerships and the incredible efforts of the Co-Op, 2024 was another remarkable year in aiding more families than ever that need assistance. They provide food to qualifying families and individuals in need, help with utilities and finances, offer spiritual support, and coordinate holiday programs to make a difference in the Buford, Suwanee and Sugar Hill communities, in addition to the Gwinnett portions of Auburn, Bethlehem, Braselton and Hoschton.
The North Gwinnett Co-Op finished the holiday season with resounding support in the form of donations and volunteer efforts. Their Thanksgiving and Christmas programs are focused on sponsoring both children and senior citizens, and supplying food to families in need through
NG CO-OP 2024 STATS:

corporate and individual donations, as well as partnerships with other nonprofits, schools, and companies such as Publix, Lettum Eat!, and Honey Baked Ham. Another commitment the Co-Op proudly takes on is their Susan Roebuck Santa Shop — a store within the Co-Op that turns new, donated toys into free or
very low-cost gifts for deserving clients where the parent(s) are allowed to select a certain amount of toys per child in their family, enabling them to make Christmas morning special regardless of their circumstances. This year, the Co-Op also sponsored hundreds of children in North Carolina and Tennessee who were affected by hurricane Helene. Their dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly, especially around the holidays, to give joy and hope to those in need.

RAINBOW VILLAGE AWARDS MICROGRANTS TO FAMILIES IN NEED AT AWARDS CEREMONY
WITH A mission to bring Help, Hope, Housing, and Healing to families facing homelessness for 33 years, Rainbow Village launched a groundbreaking microgrant program in 2020. Residents and alumni can apply for these awards, funded by the “Better Together” Women’s Giving Circle. This group of caring individuals, faith partners, and community leaders raises funds for families in need throughout the year, and recipients are
awarded at a Microgrant Award Ceremony each December. At the 5th Annual Microgrant Awards, held on December 10 at 12 Stone Sugarloaf, $25,910 was awarded to 28 households.
“This is my favorite event of the whole year,” said Melanie Conner, CEO of Rainbow Village.
“I get to channel my inner Oprah and give away money to families who not only need it but deeply, deeply appreciate it. What happens here is a blessing to everyone involved, and there is rarely a dry eye in

in the room. I’m amazed by how this event has grown year after year. We hosted our first event in 2020 via Zoom with an attendance of 15 people. This year, our attendees neared 100. Over the last five years, through the generosity of our Women’s Giving Circle, we have gifted a total of $102,604.32 to families in need.” Microgrant awards are the result of fundraising efforts by the Women’s Giving Circle, including memberships, sponsorships, grants, donations, and more. Microgrant categories include debt reduction, vehicle repairs, rental assistance, and bonuses for milestones like achieving a 700+ credit score or homeownership. Rainbow Village also partnered with Catholic Charities to assist six additional families with $10,000 in rental aid.

Glitter, Glam, and Giving Back: The 24th Annual Big T’do Shines Bright for North Gwinnett Schools
THE NORTH Gwinnett Schools Foundation (NGSF) brought all the glitter and glam to the 24th Annual Big T’Do on November 9th at the Westin at Sugarloaf. Attendees stepped into the roaring ‘20s, donning their best Gatsbyinspired attire to eat, drink, and celebrate the North Gwinnett School system, while raising critical funds for teachers and students across the district.
This gala evening serves as the only annual fundraiser hosted by the NGSF and has become a “must-attend” event for many in the North Gwinnett Cluster. Guests perused silent and live auction tables filled with incredible items donated by local businesses, ranging from signed sports memorabilia to
an unforgettable seven night stay at Las Ventanas del Mar in Costa Rica.
But the Big T’Do is about more than glitz and glamour — it’s about making a difference. “The evening isn’t just about a party; we do it for the kids. When the Big T’Do ends, we immediately start planning next year’s event. The board works hard all year to create the perfect evening to inspire attendees to bid — and bid big. With over $100,000 in teachers’ grant requests each year, we have plenty of motivation to keep us going,” said board member Angie Gora. This year’s hard work paid off, as the foundation successfully funded over $81,000 in grant requests.
The NGSF’s impact speaks volumes. Since its inception in 2001, the foundation has awarded over $900,000 in teachers’ grants, directly supporting innovative programs, resources, and opportunities for North Gwinnett students.
The 24th Annual Big T’Do proved once again that when the community comes together, incredible things happen — all for the benefit of the teachers and kids who make North Gwinnett Schools extraordinary.
Collins Hill Alumni Wins Heisman Trophy
COLLINS HILL graduate Travis Hunter received the 2024 Heisman Trophy December 14th, cementing him as one of the most legendary football players in Georgia history.
Travis Hunter plays for the Colorado Buffaloes, where he’s on track to graduate with a psychology degree. His journey started in Florida where he was born and raised, but it wasn’t until middle school when he moved to Suwanee that his football career was transformed. Hunter says, “[My time at Collins Hill] means a lot; that’s kind of where my journey started for real. I wasn’t a really good player going into my eighth-grade year; a lot of people helped me out in a lot of areas… I’m grateful for [my
time at] Collins Hill, and for the coaches and people who helped me.” Hunter’s high school career with Collins Hill concluded with an undefeated season, a State Championship, and him attaining the No. 1 overall recruit ranking spot, so there’s no surprise that his talent and passion for the sport has led him to this renowned achievement.
Hunter’s collegiate career began strong as the top recruit, and would eventually transition into a historic run with the Buffaloes. He later became their No. 1 cornerback and No. 1 receiver, and is now only the second Colorado player to win the Heisman. His coach, Deion Sanders, says, “He wants to be great at everything. [Hunter is a] great student, great offensive player, great defensive
player, and a great young man. He loves the game, loves practice, loves his family, loves his mother, loves his father, and loves his fiancée. He wants to have a commitment to excellence in everything he does.”
Hunter is the fifth player from a Georgia high school to win a Heisman, and only the second in its 90-year history who is a product of Gwinnett County. However, his accomplishments don’t stop there; he’s already won the Bednarik Award for best defender, Biletnikoff Award for best receiver, Paul Hornung Award (most versatile), and is an All American. Despite all his previous wins, he remains humble, faithful, and compassionate. Winning the Heisman exemplifies his talents, and achieving this individual honor undoubtedly solidifies him as a member of the most elite group of football players the game has ever seen.

CREATIVE IDEAS FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE VALENTINE'S DAY
F I’VE learned anything in my 30s, it’s that the finest things in life really are found in the small moments. And that, my friends, is my excuse for taking full advantage of Valentine’s Day! While the day can be accompanied by eye rolls for those who’d rather not recognize it, I see it as another reason to be intentional in slowing down and expressing both care and appreciation. So, if you’re like me and looking for ways to make the most of this Hallmark holiday, read on for some tips to help you honor Saint Valentine and relish in those finer moments.
Valentine's Day with Your Sweetheart
While carving out time for a date night can sometimes be a challenge, it’s worth it for some dedicated oneon-one time. If you’re lacking the time or energy to make an itinerary – or you’re simply in the mood for some spontaneity – consider leaving the odds up to fate with a “Tour Around Town” date night. Predetermine options of what you and your significant other might be interested in over the course of the date, then write them out on note cards. I’d suggest coming up with two to three ideas for each category.
Bars with a happy hour menu to kick off the night
Restaurants with different cuisines for dinner
A variety of events (going to a movie, heading home to play board games, visiting a brewery or winery, playing an indoor sport, etc.)
Yummy dessert spots to finish off the evening
Valentine's Day with Your Gals
Whether you’re single and ready to mingle or happily taken, a galentine’s day celebration with your closest friends always lends a way of feeding the soul. And while charcuterie boards are a no-brainer when it comes to indulging in what social media has deemed as a “girl dinner”, I’ve recently been more drawn to crafting charcuterie cups. You can order a pack online (they’re sometimes referred to as french fry holders) in the classic kraft paper finish, or I recommend opting for a pop of color like pink or red. Then, just fill each cup with miniature
Valentine's Day with the Family
Setting aside time for a designated Valentine’s Day celebration with your littlest loves is an extra opportunity to capture more of those memory-making moments. And hey, you might even surprise yourself and end up forming a new tradition! Here are a few thoughtful, yet manageable (I see you, fellow busy moms) ideas for involving your kiddos around this holiday…
versions of all your favorite charcuterie elements. This creates an adorable, fun-sized snack that can be enjoyed as an appetizer if you’re hosting a party, or on the go if your girl gang is headed out for the night. And to level up – don’t skip out on tailoring your charcuterie cup fillings to fit your Valentine’s Day theme. Think:
Fruit kabobs using festive toothpicks or skewers
Chocolate covered strawberries
Heart-shaped cheese (hello, cookie cutters)
Chocolate and sprinkle covered pretzels
Salami roses (there are plenty of online tutorials for this!)
*PRO TIP: If you want a more engaging and customizable experience, stealing this concept for a build-your-own charcuterie cup station (or dessert cup station, etc.) would also be a hit!
Cupid Day: Go easy on yourself by removing the decision-making aspect altogether. Let them strike you with their arrow by proposing ideas of a “perfect day of love” and make plans as a family.
Pancake Breakfast: Heart-shaped pancakes are guaranteed to get a heart-eyes reaction. Offer a spread of toppings like whipped cream, berries, syrup, powdered sugar glaze, sprinkles, and chocolate chips for the kids to decorate their own short stack. Bonus points for adding Valentine’s Day balloons in the kitchen or dining area to amp up the atmosphere!
Heart Hunt: Organize a scavenger hunt by hiding heart-shaped cutouts around the house with clues leading to a treat. This could be a basket of Valentine’s Day themed goodies, supplies for a special craft, or coupons that can be redeemed for high-demand activities.
chocolate chip cookie dough dip
However your Valentine’s Day unfolds, it should end with chocolate chip cookie dough dip. This no-bake delight is so easy to assemble and even easier to eat, you’ll probably just want to keep the spoon. After all, the saying holds true – the way into someone’s heart is through their stomach!
Ingredients
■ 8-ounce block of cream cheese
■ 7-ounce jar of marshmallow fluff
■ 4 ounces of Cool Whip (half of a tub)
■ 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
■ 1 cup of mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
■ Cookies or crackers for dipping
■ Sprinkles for topping (optional)
Directions:
Allow the cream cheese to soften at room temperature or warm in the microwave in 30-second increments until pliable. Stir in the marshmallow fluff, Cool Whip, and brown sugar until thoroughly combined. Fold in the chocolate chips and top with festive sprinkles. Serve immediately or refrigerate if preparing ahead. Graham crackers, vanilla wafers, Teddy Grahams, and animal crackers are all sturdy enough for scooping, while nicely complementing the sweetness of the dip. Dig in!
