VER SINCE I was a little girl I’ve wanted to be a writer. And not just a writer, but a magazine writer. I’m an ’80s baby who grew up throughout the ’90s and early 2000s, during one of the heights of magazine publishing. I found refuge in the glossy pages of Seventeen, Teen , and my personal favorite, YM . Being a writer was cool, but being a magazine writer was even better. The image of cool-girl writers was splashed all over our screens, from 13 Going on 30 and The Devil Wears Prada to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days , and, of course, who was cooler than Carrie Bradshaw skipping through the streets of New York City in stilettos with an overdue deadline? Even Ugly Betty’s titular Betty, a quirky Mode Magazine assistant, and Josie “Grossie,” a copy editor who had never been kissed, both dreamed of breaking through as writers.
of people. A team who has grown from colleagues to friends to family. A team who helped me survive a very difficult period in my life while also uplifting me and cheering me on as I weathered the storm and grew into the woman I am today. I’ve experienced more personal growth during the past few years than any other time in my life, and most of that growth was made possible by my friends at Suwanee Magazine and Veugeler Creative. (Love you, Tiff.)
I’ve been fortunate that over the last 15 years, I’ve worked for some amazing publications. I interned at Jezebel Magazine in Buckhead, cut my teeth with a 10-year tenure at Creative Loafing in Atlanta, and then landed here at Suwanee Magazine . For the past six years, I’ve had the privilege of being immersed in this amazing community, meeting wonderful people and getting the chance to tell their stories. I’ve been really, really lucky. My dream of being a writer — a writer for a magazine, no doubt — came true. And I’m so very grateful.
That’s why it’s so hard to believe that this is my final editor’s note for Suwanee Magazine . A number of emotions run through me as I think about this next chapter, which takes me out of my comfort zone filled with so many happy memories, fun experiences, and an incredible team. I’ve truly never worked with a more supportive, generous, kind, and creative group
As I enter this next chapter — this next adventure — I’m filled with excitement but also a bit of fear. How will anything ever compare to my experience here? It’s like driving with the windows down on a beautiful day following a winding road toward a new destination, but the natural feelings of sadness and doubt cloud the sky above. I finally understand what Jerry Garcia meant when he sang, “Every silver lining’s got a touch of grey.” But we will get by.
You’ve been so good to me, Suwanee. Thank you for six wonderful years. Here’s wishing you a summer filled with new adventures, too. And if you need some suggestions on where to start, turn to p. 18.

Suwanee’s annual Summer Porch Jam is the perfect summer event. It's part oldfashioned block party and part musical showcase, complete with food trucks and beverages. OFF THE Rails Mexican Cantina is our new go-to for delicious Mexican food, and no trip is complete without a big bowl of queso to start the meal. Just be sure to come hungry! Off the Rails Mexican Cantina is located at 107 E. Main St. in downtown Buford. For more information and the full menu, visit OfftheRailsMexicanCantina.com.
Love You a Latte
Brewing will release their Strawberry Breaking Blonde. Infused with real strawberries, this pink colored blonde ale is easy drinking and super refreshing. It’s the perfect amount of sweetness and hits the spot on a hot day. Business Spotlight: Mega Package Store
Suwanee's Mega Package Store has provided the community with an incredible selection of adult beverages for nearly 30 years. By Amy Kimball-Niepmann / Photos by Jon Rogers
ITUATED PROMINENTLY on LawrencevilleSuwanee Road at the eastern end of the city limits, you'll recognize the "Mega" structure, originally built in 1996 as a package store. Almost 30 years later, Mega Package Store continues to provide the community with an incredible selection of adult beverages.
Joshua Kang is the owner of this longstanding establishment. He is the youngest of four children and grew up in Illinois with three sisters. Kang earned his bachelor's degree in public health from the University of Illinois. However, he realized he was more interested in owning and operating a business than he was a career in epidemiology. His father, a retired cab company owner from the Chicago area, instilled this ambition in him. To pursue his entrepreneurial dreams, Kang moved to Georgia and its business-friendly climate, where he opened and managed several successful car wash locations in and around Woodstock
before turning his attention to adult beverages. In 2021, he became the proud owner of Mega Package Store. Kang's story is a testament to the power of determination and hard work to achieve one's dreams.
To take care of himself so he is always on top of his game, Kang has practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for about six years. He also thrives on routine and says he lives a "Groundhog Day" lifestyle. "I drive [to the martial arts studio] in the morning, 30 minutes, drive back 40 minutes, take a shower, get ready, and drive over here. That's basically my routine every day. I know it sounds weird, but I love it!" While he currently lives in Woodstock, Kang travels to Suwanee daily to give his full attention to his customers, his employees, and Mega's massive and dynamic inventory, demonstrating his dedication to being the best package store in the market.

Mega Selection
➤ If you've never visited Mega Package, prepare to be impressed. The 11,000-square-foot building is filled with rows and rows of sparkling bottles, and the walls are lined with fully stocked coolers. Rare and precious liquors are tucked safely away in a locked cabinet for those extraordinary life events and celebrations. Friendly and knowledgeable staff greet you as you enter, and experienced managers are on hand to help with recommendations and special requests; with over 10,000 unique items on the shelves at any time, their assistance can be very welcome! When asked about their most popular brand or type of beverage, Kang very quickly responded, "Hennessy." Looking around the store, you can see plenty of evidence that supports that declaration. From signage to selection, Hennessy products are readily available. Mega also keeps the latest and greatest celebrityattached spirits on hand: from tequilas to vodkas to craft beers, you need to look no further than Mega Package Store. From time to time, Kang will travel to a distillery to sample spirits and invest in a barrel or two to be bottled and private labeled for Mega Package. He has accumulated knowledge and developed a palate for choosing the flavor notes and proofs his customers prefer.
12 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com MAY / JUNE 24
Mega Package Store previously conducted regular wine tastings in a designated Tasting Room, but due to pandemic restrictions, these events were stopped. Now that the rules have been relaxed regarding “liquid to lips,” suppliers hold tastings in-store so that customers can try different liquors and beverages before making a purchase. And although the tasting room is currently being used as storage for their fast-moving items, Kang would like to repurpose it as a mini-shop for products complementary to the package store.
Customers can follow them on social media to be the first to know about special tasting events, product raffles, limited releases, and special giveaways. Empty barrels are highly soughtafter prizes for many Mega Package Stpre customers.
Whether you are hosting a graduation party, Mother's Day breakfast in bed, backyard BBQ, sunny day on the lake, or holiday cookout, or you need a special gift or are just feeling thirsty, chances are excellent that Mega Package will have whatever potent potable you seek on hand, and you might discover some things you did not even know you wanted! Mega Package opens every day at 9 a.m., even on holidays (Sundays open at 12:30 p.m.). Can't make it into the store? You can shop online or with their new app— visit megapackagestore. bottlecapps.com for details. ■

INVESTMENT STRATEGIES
BY: Bill and Cindi Porter, AILERON INVESTMENT ADVISORS
What industries might be investment opportunities in the near future?
There is a case to be made for electric equipment and electrical power generation.
On March 7, 2024, The Washington Post ran the following headline: Amid explosive demand, America is running out of power.1
There are three new major factors which have simultaneously combined to make the demand for electricity skyrocket:
1. Artificial intelligence (AI) data centers require huge amounts of electricity.
2. EV (electric vehicles) are multiplying rapidly, and they all run from a fat electric cord.
3. Crypto-mining currencies require a lot of electricity to mint and process transactions.
The state of Georgia recently announced that it was expecting - not a 17% increase in electricity demand – but a 17-times increase. Jason Shaw, chairman of the Georgia Public Service recently said, “When you look at the numbers, it is staggering.” 1
Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch recently told shareholders at an annual meeting that electricity needs will soar.
"The simultaneous growth of electric cars and AI, both of which need electricity, both of which need voltage transformers – I think, is creating a tremendous demand for electrical equipment and for electrical power generation.”
- Elon Musk 2
Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch recently told shareholders at an annual meeting that electricity needs will soar, “That means one thing: no power, no AI, or, to put it more clearly: no electricity, no progress.” 3 Companies that fill the void in the electricity marketplace may offer an investment opportunity. A discussion with your trusted advisor could be time well spent. ■

The Important Role of User Experience
User experience plays a vital role in web design and helps elevate your business’s online presence.
In the digital realm, the success of your website hinges on more than just its appearance. User experience (UX) stands at the forefront, dictating how visitors interact with your online presence from the moment they arrive to the actions they take.
At Veugeler Creative, we understand that a positive user experience is essential for achieving business objectives and fostering long-term customer relationships. Here are some actionable tips we implement into both the design and development stages to improve website usability, navigation, and accessibility to ensure visitors have a pleasant and effective interaction with your site:
1. Streamline Navigation
➤ Simplify the navigation menu to make it intuitive and easy to navigate. Organize content logically and use clear labels to help users
find what they're looking for quickly. For websites with extensive content, we recommend utilizing a mega menu – which is a fully expanded overview of all subpages – to provide a comprehensive outline of available options.
2. Optimize Page Load Speed
➤ Website speed is crucial for retaining visitors and improving search engine rankings. Focus on minimizing file sizes, leveraging browser caching, and optimizing images to reduce load times. We also partner with a reliable and reputable hosting service to offer an additional layer of dependability and support that further promotes the overall speed and health of a website.
3. Prioritize Mobile Responsiveness
➤ With the increasing use of mobile devices, generating a mobile-friendly version is nonnegotiable. Adopt a responsive
design approach so that websites adapt seamlessly to various screen sizes and resolutions. To solidify this a step further, we test each website across different devices and browsers to confirm consistent performance and user experience.
4. Enhance Readability
➤ Pay attention to elements such as typography, font sizes, and color contrasts during the design phase to improve readability. Provide alternate text for images and use descriptive language for buttons and links. Referring to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and remaining conscientious of this standard helps to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, which is always an intentional aspect of our process.
4. Simplify Forms and Calls to Action
➤ Be mindful of forms and buttons to minimize frustration and improve conversion rates. When multiple

fields of information need to be collected, consider breaking down the form into a couple of smaller, more manageable steps. Clearly indicate required fields and provide real-time feedback to users to reduce errors. Make calls to action (CTAs) prominent, compelling, and easy to click. We advocate for a few CTAs on the website’s homepage and at least one on each of the subpages to encourage users to remain on the site, continue exploring, and ultimately initiate a conversation with your company.
At Veugeler Creative, we are committed to helping businesses elevate their online presence through user-centric design and development that drives results. And by implementing these UX best practices, your website will not only look visually appealing, but it will cultivate an experience for your audience that’s more likely to generate leads. ■

Take a Walk on the Wildside!
Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary, formerly Yellow River Game Ranch, has been an iconic destination for Georgians for almost 60 years. Founded as a home for injured and orphaned wildlife and a place where hundreds of families could come to interact with deer, rabbits, goats, and more, the Game Ranch closed in 2018 and re-opened under new ownership as Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary has made major improvements to the property, and grown to provide resident animals with enrichment activities, high-quality diets, and well-maintained habitats.
With the help of talented curators, keepers, staff, and volunteers working closely with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary promotes animal appreciation and provides wildlife education. YRWS offers people of all ages opportunities to get very close to and learn about many of Georgia's native and not-so-native animals right outside of Atlanta. Check out the black bears playing in the waterfalls. Little ones will love feeding and brushing down barnyard animals like goats, sheep, and the huge but lovable steer Ferdinand. Sit with the bunnies in the bunny yard, feed American bison if you dare. Hang out with lovable lemurs and spider monkeys, and have a howling good time with the coyotes. After enjoying the animals, take a crack at gem mining any rockhound would love.

⊲ The Sautee Nacoochee Indian Mound at Hardman Farm is perhaps the bestknown feature of the farm, located just south of Helen in White County. The gazebo-topped mound and cow pasture sit across the street from the Hardman Farm house, which offers guided house tours. Built in 1870 by Captain James Nichols, the house is a grand example of Italianate architecture and was originally known as “West End” because it was at the west end of the Nacoochee Valley. Anna Ruby Nichols, the namesake of nearby Anna Ruby Falls, once lived in the home and its last owner was the family of Dr. Lamartine Hardman, Georgia’s governor from 1927–1931. The old barn that sits on the property was the focal point of Nacoochee Dairy that operated from 1910 until the mid-1920s. Guests will learn how milk was processed and transported, plus they will see a spring house and former horse barn. The house is also available for weddings and events. Benefits of Family Adventures
Tips for Making the Best Family Memories
BY: Jennifer Wilmoth, LMFT, Thrive Forward Therapy
S THE days are getting warmer our minds tend to drift to vacations and adventures. Imagine laughing around a campfire under a starry sky in the mountains, exploring hidden gems in a foreign land, or simply going on a spontaneous road trip with your family by your side. These are the moments that become treasured memories – the moments we cherish and carry with us. As a therapist, I’ve had the privilege of seeing the positive impact of family adventures on emotional wellbeing and family relationships.
Here are my top three practical tips for creating lasting family memories. Whether you’re planning your next big adventure or seeking inspiration for spontaneous outings, these tips will help you make the most of your adventures and travel this season.
Embrace Novelty and Creativity:
➤ Break away from routine and embrace novelty in your family adventures. Explore new places, try different activities, and step out of your comfort zone together.
Whether it’s hiking on a new trail, trying out a new cuisine, or setting out on an impromptu activity, novelty stimulates curiosity and fosters growth in both parents and children. No matter how much you plan ahead there will still likely be unexpected challenges. Encourage each family member to contribute creative solutions and be open to trying new things, fostering a sense of shared exploration and creativity.
Encourage Flexibility and Adaptability:
➤ Flexibility is key when it comes to family adventures. Embrace spontaneity and be willing to adapt to changing circumstances or unexpected challenges. Whether it’s adjusting your itinerary due to weather conditions, accommodating individual preferences, or changing plans on the fly, practicing flexibility fosters resilience and promotes conflict resolution within the family unit, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the adventure to the fullest.
Reflection:
➤ Take time to reflect on your family adventures together. After outings or vacations
ask your family to share their thoughts, feelings, and highlights from the experience. Encourage each family member to express what they enjoyed most and what they learned on the trip; this helps to develop more understanding of your loved ones and promotes self-awareness even in your littlest family members. Kids and teens might enjoy keeping a travel journal or making a travel video blog as a way to reflect on the vacation or outing.
Enjoy the memories you make with your family on the adventures ahead. Remember to focus on the present moment and embrace novelty while being adaptable. Sometimes the adventures with the most twists and turns make for the best memories and the funniest stories ■

Ask Fanny
The mascot of Sugar Hill Animal Hospital answers questions about your pet’s health.
Q: My family (including Caspian, our Siamese) and I are new to the Buford area. How can we find a “good” vet?
-- Brooklyn J. (Buford)
A: In addition to Google ratings and friend, family, and neighbor’s recommendations, look for certification by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Only 14% of all animal hospitals are certified for excellence by AAHA. Also tour the prospective clinic to experience the friendliness of the staff,
cleanliness of the facility, and ability to provide full service including emergency care, surgery, and boarding. Remember, not all veterinary clinics are the same and the closest might not be the best for you or your pet.
Q: While I am at work, is it ok to leave my dog in my backyard during the summer?
-- Sharon S. (Suwanee)
A: At Sugar Hill Animal Hospital, we treat numerous dogs for overheating every summer. Remember, if it is too hot for you to run around in the hot yard in a fur coat, it may be too hot for your pet. Providing shade, fresh water, and supervision is essential to avoid heat stroke that could prove fatal. If your dog appears overheated, cool with a water hose, apply rubbing alcohol to the foot pads, and rush to a veterinary facility immediately.
Q: What is the best flea preventative for my lake-loving Labrador Retriever “Abner?”
-- Malcolm A. (Sugar Hill)
A: Flea and tick control is now safer and easier than ever before with isoxaline medicationsincluding Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica and Credelio. Our veterinarians prefer Bravecto (topical or oral) which lasts a full three months. In my experience, some of the older topicals are not as effective or long lasting as they once were. As with all medications, consult
your veterinarian regarding which flea/tick treatment is best for Abner.
Q: “Noodle” our labradoodle will need to be boarded this summer. How do we know he’ll be safe?
-- Mary P. (Suwanee)
A: Always tour the boarding facility prior to dropping Noodle off. A good rule of thumb is if they won’t let you see the kennels, don’t leave your pet there! At Sugar Hill Animal Hospital Pet Resort, we have webcams, private themed suites with TVs and raised beds, and even a saltwater swimming pool! In addition, he can be in Doggy Daycare during the day to get exercise, socialization, and reduce stress while boarding. Hopefully Noodle can enjoy a great vacation, too!

IN SUWANEE CONTEST
Sponsored by American Casual Living
ith Father's Day right around the corner, it's the perfect time to celebrate the superhero dads in our community. From coaching Little League games to helping with math homework, these are the dads who juggle work, family, and everything in between, and who go above and beyond for their families.
➤For this year's Best Dad in Suwanee Contest, we received many heartwarming essays celebrating the remarkable men in our community. Sons and daughters, wives, and friends submitted stories highlighting the unwavering dedication, love, and selfless acts of these fathers. Selecting a winner from such an amazing selection of exceptional dads was an incredibly challenging task, to say the least.
Thanks to our friends at American Casual Living, as well as the generosity of local Suwanee businesses, we were able to spoil our Best Dad in Suwanee winner, Delorean Ostrom. We are honored to feature the top three essays in this issue. As the winner, Delorean received a half-day guided fishing trip on Lake Lanier provided by North Georgia Charters, and a gift card to local restaurant Bare Bones Steakhouse. The 2nd and 3rd place submissions also received prizes from StillFire Brewing, Seaside Oyster Bar and Salon Greco. Read all of the submitted essays online at SuwaneeMagazine.com.

Delorean was nominated Best Dad by two members of our community:
I WOULD like to nominate Delorean for being an amazing father for his precious Luna & Lily. He recently lost his wife Mandy due to cancer. They fought so hard and he was an amazing husband and father during the most difficult times. Delorean is the most unselfish person I know. He is definitely wearing a superhero cape raising his 2 amazing daughters as a single dad, working, and keeping the girls in extra activities such as soccer to keep them smiling. He is definitely a role model. Delorean is a Suwanee resident and running his restaurant business, Southern Grace.

At 37, Delorean is the dad and soccersoftball coach of Luna, 5, and Lily, 3. While their mom, Mandy, was going through chemotherapy, Delorean ran a marathon every month for a year, in cities around the country, to support her and the Cholangiocarcinoma foundation. As a chef, he produced cooking videos to support her and to bring attention to this rare cancer. Since Mandy passed away on January 8th, 2024, he has been both parents to his little girls, and has taken extra work to support them. Last year he coached both girls’ Suwanee teams and last week he began again. So much love. So much sorrow. But he puts his babies first. He is the best daddy I know.

DAVID IS the dad who does everything! He starts the mornings making sure our high schooler makes it to the bus stop on time at 5:55 a.m. Then he brings Mom coffee in bed and helps get the little ones breakfast while making their lunches for preschool and kindergarten. He makes sure our kindergartener takes her lifesaving chemotherapy pills each morning and then heads off to work in the home office. While he's working his full-time job, he manages to wrangle the preschooler between meetings and work so that Mom can take the kindergartener to the hospital for her leukemia treatments. Sometimes he even takes over the hospital visits so that Mom can have a break. He's the go-getter that is always willing to run back out to the car in the rain when someone forgets something or stepping in to make dinner when Mom is too wrapped up in a project to think about food. He's the dad who drives our high schooler to her tennis lessons and makes sure she understands her chemistry and math homework when she is confused about what was taught in class. He's our family handyman ready to fix any household mishaps in the midst of leveling the ground and building a playhouse in the backyard for the little ones. I don't think there's anything my kid's dad isn't willing to do for our family, and he always does it with a smile!

and selflessness, commuting 31 miles daily to serve the community where he was born and raised. His commitment to safeguarding lives extends beyond his professional duties, as he coaches a 10-year-old flag football team, mentors youth, and educates future emergency medical personnel as an adjunct professor at Gwinnett Technical College.
Qubi’s role as a father transcends mere familial obligations; it is a cornerstone of his identity. Despite the demands of his career and community involvement, he prioritizes his role as a parent and husband above all else. His family consists of three children, all boys, each demonstrating remarkable achievements under his guidance. With one child (23) already a college graduate and music producer, another (18) college-bound and poised to graduate high school soon, and a 10-year-old excelling academically and athletically, Qubi’s influence is palpable.
“What sets Qubi apart as the epitome of Suwanee's best dad is his unwavering commitment to leading by example. He doesn't just preach values of dedication, perseverance, and compassion, he lives them daily, inspiring not only his children but also those around him.”

RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT:
SEASIDE OYSTER BAR
ON THE eastern edge of Suwanee Town Center rests Seaside Oyster Bar, a coastal-inspired addition to the local restaurant scene. With its 30A-esque font and coloring, SOB boasts a large footprint with an expansive dining area, full-service cocktail bar, and a covered patio featuring beach-style lounge seating and gas-fueled fire pit tables. Upon walking in and smelling the fresh seafood, one might feel as if they are just a stone's throw from a sandy beach -- and that’s all by design.
Following Tequila Mama Taqueria, TMT
“ ...a familiar experience, as if you were dining somewhere fantastic along the Gulf Coast.”
Concepts’ second big venture in the area, Seaside Oyster Bar, came out of co-owner Blake Rogers’ longing for a distant delicacy.
“I have always loved traveling to the Gulf Coast and experiencing all the wonderful food it has to offer,” says Rogers. “However, upon my return home back to Georgia each time, I found myself missing the places I visited, so we decided to create Seaside Oyster Bar to provide a familiar experience, as if you were dining somewhere fantastic along the Gulf Coast.”
With shiplap paneling, wicker chandeliers, nautical rope accents, and a thoroughly ocean blue color tone, SOB stands out in the local area known for traditionally Southern eateries.
“In our minds [the restaurant] is casual, a place that you can come and feel like you’re at the beach, relaxed, and you can find fresh foods directly from the ocean like fresh oysters and fish,” explains

Vice President of TMT Concepts, Jenny Germosen. “Basically, we want people to feel like they're on the coast.”
With the authentically executed coastal aesthetic, music, and aromas, the ambience alone seems to accomplish just that, but the food is what really packs the punch.
Oysters, shrimp, tuna, lobster, crab. Towers of seafood and curated cocktails to pair them with. Seaside has it all. “The oysters! People really come here for the oysters,” says Germosen. Choose between raw oysters and cooked oysters, Rockefeller and New Orleans. The New Orleans, Germosen’s favorite, are flavorful with a twist of BBQ NOLA seasoning, but fans of cooked oysters really enjoy the Rockefeller.
CURATED CRAFT COCKTAILS
➤ Seaside’s rotating menu of fresh oysters from places like Maryland and Virginia may be their biggest draw, but it’s only one of many elegant offerings. SOB has a fully stocked bar with carefully curated craft cocktails and a wide variety of bourbons to pick from. Their signature drink, the Smoked Old Fashioned with a bourbon of your choice, is a crowd favorite, and it doesn’t stop there. The Seaside Lemonade or Rosemary Gin Fizz are delightful paired with a platter of fresh oysters, but my favorite was the “Take Me Home” frozen cocktail, a seasonal drink for summer, with strawberry, coconut rum and pomegranate.

LOCAL ROOTS
➤ For fans of Tequila Mama, the connection to Seaside Oyster Bar is evident in the consistency and quality of both the food and customer service.
“We all share that we're very passionate about what we do, and it's very important for us to have the attention to detail, the quality of food and that people feel welcome when they come here,” says Germosen. “It's not only about the food, it's about the experience.”
While TMT Concepts’ vision seems clear now, they come from humble beginnings. Only one year into the industry, with just one restaurant in operation, Tequila Mama and the restaurant industry as a whole took a hard hit from the pandemic.
“I think the margarita saved us,” says Germosen, who has been with the company from the start. “We never closed our doors. We were doing to-gos until the city allowed us to open and when we opened in May [2020] it was a hit.”
She credits the pandemic in enabling people to value TMT Concepts’ personal touch. It spawned a whole new beginning and only a year later, in October 2021, they opened SOB to immediate success. One would never guess this restaurant had not always been an institution. After that, for TMT Concepts, there was no looking back. Following a phoenix-like emergence out of the pandemic and a trusted concept in Seaside Oyster Bar, TMT opened up another Tequila Mama in Buford, followed by Local Tap right next door. A year after that, they

opened their second Seaside in Bethlehem, and the coastal-inspired cuisine with a Southern twist became a proven model.
“We get a lot of people who have been to Florida and when they come here they’re like, ‘Wow, I feel like I’m in Florida,’” says Germosen. “They go, ‘This is really fresh! This is really good! I’m gonna come back!’”
And as long as they keep coming, TMT Concepts will keep growing. This summer they plan to open a third Tequila Mama in Dacula, a fourth in Alpharetta in 2025, and by the end of this year, a new concept called Suwanee Social right here in Town Center.
Germosen can’t say much, but she describes it as “a fusion of foods, tapas with a twist of Mediterranean, and more fresh, more elaborate dishes. It is going to be a great addition to Suwanee.”
In the meantime, if you're a beach person in a landlocked town looking for that relaxed vacationstyle dining experience that can only be found on the Gulf, at Seaside Oyster Bar you can find a bit of the beach just down the block. ■

THE NEW MUTANTS
From homebrewing to community hub: Exploring the evolution of Sandy Springs’ Mutation Brewing Company
By Lizzy James / Photos Courtesy Mutation Brewing Company
ESTLED IN the heart of Sandy Springs, Mutation Brewing Company stands as a testament to the power of passion, community, and evolution. What began as a beloved hobby for coowners Chris Shapiro, Jack Poole, Michael Shapiro, and a group of close-knit friends has blossomed into a thriving taproom that celebrates change and embraces diversity. With
a commitment to crafting exceptional brews and creating a welcoming space for all, Mutation Brewing Company has become a beloved hub for locals and beer enthusiasts alike.
We recently had a chance to catch up with co-owner Leslie Shapiro to discuss Mutation’s roots, unique approach to brewing, and the vibrant community they’re fostering in Sandy Springs and beyond.
“Life is this constant whirlwind of changes and transitions, and we wanted a name that reflected that. So, Mutation it was!”
How did you get involved in the craft beer industry?
Leslie Shapiro: My husband Chris and I had been homebrewing for many years. We'd spend hours tinkering with recipes, trying to recreate our favorite brews, and even coming up with some wild concoctions of our own. We kept track of everything in a journal with a cover that had the words "Dream Big" on it — it was kind of our motto. And let me tell you, Brew Depot in Alpharetta was practically our second home! We'd swing by there so often, soaking up knowledge from Bob and stocking up on all the brewing goodies we could get our hands on. It wasn't long before we roped in our friends and family, especially our

in-crime, Jack Poole and Michael Shapiro. Before we knew it, Jack's place turned into our unofficial brew house, where we'd whip up batch after batch of our homemade concoctions.
What started as a hobby soon turned into a full-blown obsession! But the real gamechanger came when life threw us a curveball. That life event was the catalyst that led us to chase our dreams and start a business that not only brewed killer beer but also gave back to our community.
Explain the story behind the name Mutation Brewing Company.
Leslie Shapiro: We wanted something that really captured the essence of what we were all about, and all we kept coming back to was what a change this would be in all of our lives. We all come from different walks of life, with our own unique backgrounds and experiences, but we're united by this shared vision of embracing change and moving forward (or “mutating”) together. After tossing around a
bunch of ideas, we kept circling back to that concept of “mutation.” Life is this constant whirlwind of changes and transitions, and we wanted a name that reflected that. So, Mutation it was!
What has the community support been like in Sandy Springs? Why did you choose that area?
Leslie Shapiro: We chose Sandy Springs because it felt like a perfect meeting spot for people from all over — whether you're OTP or ITP, everyone can come together right here. The community itself has been wonderful, and they welcomed us with open arms. They've been our biggest
cheerleaders, spreading the word about our brewery far and wide and supporting us every step of the way. We wouldn't be where we are today if it weren't for their unwavering support.
In your opinion, what makes you unique from other Georgia Breweries?
Leslie Shapiro: We wanted to create a space where folks could come in, let loose, and forget about the stresses of everyday life. We provide a wide variety of beer styles and a modern space that is versatile for any private or public event.
49
FOOD AND DRINK
Mutation Brewing offers hard and frozen seltzers in addition to twelve different beers on tap.
Customers can enjoy their favorite sporting event on one of eight televisions in the taproom and take home some swag from their on-site store.
Who doesn't love swings? Enjoy a cold beer seated comfortably in a swing table on Mutation’s outdoor patio.
The large main taproom offers customers plenty of space to play games, listen to live music, or simply sit and sip on a brew.
Tell us a little bit about your brewing team.
Leslie Shapiro: I might be biased, but we truly have the best team. Our recipe mastermind, Dan Caudle, has consistently brought the Mutation name to life by crafting recipes that span from clean and crisp to flavorful and innovative. Additionally, our taproom staff ensures
a warm welcome and a fun atmosphere for all patrons.
What is your biggest/ best seller in the taproom?
Leslie Shapiro: This is a tough one. There are a couple that come to mind. One being our flagship New England IPA, Liquid Hop Magma. Another one is our
collaboration with 99X, the radio station. It’s a West Coast Pilsner we named 99Xperiment. The last would be our wide range of seltzers.
If you had to recommend a seasonal beer for people coming to your taproom in May/June, what would it be?
Leslie Shapiro: We will have a Maibock for our dark-lager-style people along with a classic Mexican Lager right in time for Cinco De Mayo and summer, because who doesn’t love an easy refreshing beer in the Georgia heat?
Tell us about some of the events you host at the brewery.
Leslie Shapiro: We host events or specials daily, with our staple events including Team Trivia on Wednesdays, Team Feud on Thursdays, Water Pong Tournaments on Fridays, and Beer Yoga on Sundays.
Where else can people find your beer other than at the taproom?
Leslie Shapiro: You can find our beers at any of your local watering holes — while supplies last. We have also enjoyed making collaborative beers with local breweries and companies, and have a couple in the works that we cannot wait to share! Follow us on social media to make sure you don’t miss out ■

Party Hacks with
SUMMER IS such an exhilarating time for kiddos. The break from school often comes with a little more flexibility and a little less structure, which translates in their world to more FUN. I mean, who can blame ’em? And for those littles lucky enough to have a summer birthday, these notable weeks of the year can serve up even more excitement and anticipation. For the parents, however, planning a summer shindig can present itself with some logistical challenges. For example, this could be a scheduling conflict due to family traveling or friends away on vacation. Or, it could be based on the weather and your efforts to beat the heat. Either way --no sweat, my friends! I’m here to suggest some alternative ideas to help you maximize the potential of throwing a total bash of a birthday in the summertime.
Ahoy, Me Hearties!
A pirate theme is the prime opportunity to switch it up from some of the typical outdoor activities. Not sure where to start, matey? Read on for a few ways to transform your backyard into a pirate’s paradise that will leave your guests shouting “shiver me timbers ! ”
Create a treasure hunt in the sand. This is convenient if you already have a sandbox, but if not --- you can pretty easily bring one to life. All you need is some source of containment (a kiddie pool, an oversized storage tub, or even a large tarp), play sand, and some “treasures” that’ll entice the kids to go digging.
Make your partygoers walk the plank. Guaranteed entertainment for all! It might require getting a little resourceful on what to use as your plank (think long, skinny slab of wood or something similar) and how to stabilize each end (cinder blocks, sturdy boxes or crates, etc.). Position the plank over a kiddie pool filled with water and toy fish or sharks, then dare each child to give it their best walk.
Decorate a spyglass. Set up a craft table with supplies to decorate a “spyglass,” which can simply be an empty paper towel roll. Offer stickers, jewels, buttons, markers, paint, tissue paper, construction paper, and anything else fitting. Let your guests craft a masterpiece that can be played with at the party and then taken home.
Go searching for gold. I recommend this as a good ice breaker to kick off the festivities. Order a large sack of gold coins and hide them all over your party area. When everyone arrives, let ‘em loose on a voyage to explore and find gold. All the littles will be warmed up and ready to party like a pirate in no time!

Water Wars
As a substitute for the classic summer pool party, consider hosting an epic day of water wars. Prepare a lineup of water-themed competitions and let the games begin. Depending on the number of people you’re hosting, participants could compete individually or relay-style in groups. To up the ante, display a poster or white board to tally points and keep track of who’s in the lead. The adrenaline will be rushing and water flowing! Take a look through some suggestions below to begin establishing your game play.
Water Gun Races: Picture this… a clothesline setup, but with plastic cups attached to a string. The open end of the cup will need to be facing the player. The objective of this game is to blast water into the cups, pushing them along the string with the power and aim
of the water guns. Whoever’s cup makes it to the end of the line first is the winner.
Slip & Slide Dash: Slip and slides never go out of style, especially when you overload the soap and bubbles to make it extra difficult to maneuver. Adding an additional component to the end of the slide, like some sort of physical task or obstacle to navigate, could provide a tough spin on the rules to overcome… and perhaps a chance to earn some bonus points.
Water Balloon Battle: The options are endless when it comes to water balloons. Your average sport involving a ball --- such as dodgeball or baseball would be taken to the next level if you replace the ball with a water balloon. You could also add a twist on some more traditional party games, like using water balloons as piñatas. Have no mercy!
Splash Party
Make a splash! And don’t just limit it to water… I’m talking paint. Yes, you read that right - a summer paint party. Even the kid who’s too cool for crafts won’t be able to resist the joy that comes with untamed art. Plus, if you’re on the hunt for a more low-key or intimate birthday celebration this year, you definitely don’t need a large group to execute this concept. Sometimes the most unforgettable memories are waiting to be made with just a few close friends or family.
Here are a few tips to help make the day a success:
1. First, arrange a “paint safety zone” in your yard to protect the ground using cheap tarps, tablecloths, trash bags, etc.
2. Then, set up a large canvas display. This could be in the form of hanging a bed sheet, taping up poster board, or rolling out Kraft paper.
3. Incorporate a variety of paint colors to enhance the splatter effect and let their inner artist go wild! Disposable bowls are all you really need, but I’ve found that a muffin tin from the Dollar Tree turns into a durable and reusable paint tray. Or, take it up a notch by experimenting with some unconventional vessels... like a water gun or spray bottle loaded with paint.
4. Lastly, since it’s 99.9% likely your little Picassos will be covered in paint, set up a “rinse station” with sprinklers for them to run through and wash off all the excess paint. Just make sure to buy the washable kind, and I would advise swim suits for the entirety of the event. ■
Enjoy the summer fun, my fellow party people!

Squirt guns, sprinklers, and slippery slides provide plenty of cool options for clean, oldfashioned summer fun.

Exciting Summer Reads by Local Authors: Fantasy and Adventure Await!
LOOKING FOR something fresh and exciting to read this summer? Escape your day-to-day with novels written by talented local authors!
MB Mooney of Lawrenceville has penned Shield of the King (Elowen Book 1), a fantasy/sci-fi tale inspired by the author’s observation that our culture has become increasingly divided without much of an attempt to understand the other side.
The father of two daughters, Mooney hopes the book will inspire young women to work for peace and understanding now and in the future with their immense, unique talents and gifts. Elowen, the strong female character in the story, finds her own path through investigation, asking questions, and seeking to understand while being rooted in what is right and true.
“I wanted to place a teen heroine within a divided nation on the brink of civil war. She has personal connections to both sides, and she feels torn between them. Within that division, she must struggle with what is right and true, fight for those things, and find her own way in such a separated culture,” said Mooney.
For fans of adventure mysteries, Deep Steal – A Waterway Chronicle Adventure is just what you are looking for. Author Matthew Gore, a longtime Suwanee resident now living with his wife somewhere aboard their beautiful fantail trawler, is a 30-year veteran video director and editor and sought-after storyteller. Matthew's love for the sea and adventure shines through in his ocean-based action-adventure “Waterway Chronicle” books. The first in a series of gripping tales, Deep Steal readers will follow the exploits of Michael and Morgan Gannon aboard their home, the 140-foot ship the Water Horse, that serves as the base for Water Horse Expeditions. With each page, Gore takes you along with his cast of characters into a world of thrilling escapades and nautical mysteries that unfold against a backdrop of waves, guns, and gadgets upon the boundless oceans and waterways of the world.

Four Gwinnett County Breweries Team Up to Release an Earth Day IPA
IN CELEBRATION of Earth Day this past April, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful (GC&B) announced that it has been brewing up something exciting with four local breweries. Premiering the weekend before the day devoted to diversifying, educating, and activating the environmental movement worldwide, the Earth Day-inspired IPA became available April 20th at Slow Pour Brewing Company in Lawrenceville, 6S Brewing Company in Duluth, Cultivation Brewery in Norcross, and StillFire Brewing in Suwanee. Thoughtfully named “ReBREWable Energy,” a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the limitedrelease craft beer will benefit Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and its mission to Connect People and Resources for a Sustainable Gwinnett while supplies last.
“We were so excited to see this collaboration come together in the name of the environment and celebration of Earth Day 2024,” said Schelly Marlatt, Executive Director of Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. “Money raised through this effort will go directly towards GC&B programs like Adopt-A-Road, Adopt-AStream, Great American Cleanup, and Green & Healthy Schools – all devoted to making our little corner of the world a cleaner, greener, more vibrant place to live. Each of the four breweries has created its own special twist on ‘ReBREWable Energy’ craft beer, so each version of this limited-time-only India Pale Ale is slightly different. If you love the planet and a good craft brew, we encourage you to stop by each brewery and try them all, but please remember to drink responsibly.”

NORTH GWINNETT HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM WINS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP
IN EARLY April, the NGHS Robotics team competed in the Peachtree District Championship and came home with their third blue banner of the season. Don’t Make it Weird: Talk About Mental Health
May is mental health awareness month, and a local nonprofit is raising awareness and offering support to those struggling and their families.
HARRY MILLER appeared to have it all.
The 2019 graduate of Buford High School was the valedictorian of his class, a missionary who serves on the board of “Mission For Nicaragua,” and a 5-star football recruit who had full scholarship offers to nearly every top football program in the country. Ultimately, he chose to play at The Ohio State University where he saw time on the field playing as a freshman and would soon be interviewing agents who wanted to represent him in the NFL draft as a likely early round pick. All was going as planned, or so everyone thought. Late in the evening on a warm August night in 2021, Harry would make a call to his mother that changed the trajectory of all their lives forever with five words,
“I can’t do this anymore.”
The following day after speaking to his Head Coach Ryan Day, telling him about his overwhelming desire and intent to take his life, he received the help he desperately needed. Like any other injury or illness, Harry began working with professionals to help heal from an illness that no one else could see, but everyone was talking about, “Where is Harry Miller?”
After quietly sitting out of the 2021 season with much speculation as to his whereabouts, Harry decided it was time to put an end to the false narratives circulating and tell his story by announcing his medical retirement from football. To read Harry’s medical
retirement statement, visit DMIW. org. His statement caught the hearts of the country, and he was instantly catapulted into a newer, more important role, Mental Health Advocate. His mission is simple, to break the stigma surrounding mental illness by raising awareness and education, using the motto, “Don’t Make It Weird: Talk About Mental Health.” Harry graduated from The Ohio State University in December 2023, Summa Cum Laude, with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
64 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com MAY / JUNE 24
Now, working as a Mental Health Consultant and Advocate, Harry travels the country sharing his story and working to further his mission to help others struggling with mental illness. He is also spending time in Washington D.C. helping create and support policy and legislation such as the TEAMS Act, requiring coaches be adequately trained in signs and symptoms of mental illness, as well as how to get the student-athlete the help they need, among other initiatives. Very soon after Harry announced his retirement, his mother, Kristina Miller, was overwhelmed by the parents of children and young adults in our local community who were suffering in silence alone. From that realization, “Don’t Make It Weird”, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization was born and
Kristina Miller (far right), working to advocate and support families and individuals struggling with mental health in our community.
is working to continue the conversation about mental health and breaking stigmas.
Don’t Make it Weird is working to open a community resource center to provide support and resources through shared lived experiences. According to Kristina, “This is not meant to replace counseling by professional therapists, but to walk beside those in crisis who need support, direction, empathy, and compassion on this very lonely and scary journey. The goal of the center will be to provide free classes to the community on suicide prevention, teenager first aid, IEP/504 planning, wellness topics, among other educational experiences. We will host a monthly meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of each month for family members of those facing mental illness. In addition, we will partner closely with National Alliance on Mental Illness Hall County / Ryan Joiner Foundation to provide resources, up-to-date class schedules, and learning opportunities at their location in Gainesville.”
On Friday, May 17th, The Faces of Buford and Veugeler Creative will be hosting a dinner and cornhole tournament fundraiser for Don’t Make it Weird at Tannery Row Ale House in downtown Buford. The community is invited to hear Harry’s story and come out and support this worthwhile cause. For more information or to purchase tickets scan this QR Code. ➤

Be sure to follow Suwanee Magazine’s Facebook page where we’ll be sharing new Faces of Suwanee interviews regularly.
Chris Bridges CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER
Chris is often considered one of the “Ambassadors of StillFire Brewing” and one of the first guys to greet new people and make them feel welcome. Once you meet him, you will get a big hug and greeting moving forward. Someone recently said that he is the nicest person they’ve ever met! He is quick to volunteer, lead a team, and join in on the work and fun. He was also recently appointed to the Suwanee Planning & Zoning Commission. He will tell you unabashedly how much he loves Suwanee and the community! Interview by Julie Perdue / Photo by Jon Rogers
PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I’m a divorced, single father of an amazing 15-year-old daughter, Stella. I share 50/50 custody with her mom. Stella and I can be caught eating out at local Suwanee restaurants, especially Mellow Mushroom, SOB, and Don Bonachon, but our favorite is probably grocery-store sushi. We are both active volunteers and attendees at Gwinnett Church.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT AND PAST CAREER. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT IT?
I have been in commercial construction my entire career, mostly focused on glass façade installation. My employer of the past 12 years often ranks No. 1 in the country in sales, with over $200 million in annual sales.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED OR WORKED HERE? I have lived in Suwanee since 2014, making the short move from Duluth, where I lived for several years, but I have been a resident of Gwinnett for almost 20 years. As a testament to
my LOVE for Suwanee, I commute to Kennesaw 3-5 days a week for work.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SUWANEE?
Hands down, the community. I have met so many wonderful people who reside and work in Suwanee. I love the diversity and how neighbors and friends come together to celebrate and support one another.
WHAT CURRENT OR FORMER BUSINESS, OR PLACE, MAKES YOU FEEL THE MOST NOSTALGIC ABOUT SUWANEE? You’ll find me most afternoons meeting with friends for an after-work beer at StillFire Brewing. When I mention a wonderful community, I don’t know if there is a better place to surround yourself with a more loving group of people.
66 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com MAY / JUNE 24
IF YOU COULD TAKE ANYONE TO LUNCH, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THAT BE? Probably my mom. I never got the chance to know her, and I would love the opportunity to have a conversation with her. We’d go to SOB to split the Seafood Tower.
WHAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN? You really can’t beat the beauty of the North Georgia Mountains.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST MOVIE YOU REMEMBER SEEING IN A THEATER? Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, circa 1977
TELL US SOMETHING THAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST. I’ve never put much thought into a bucket list, but I would love to take a long train voyage through the Swiss Alps and surrounding areas.
A familiar face around town, Chris is quick to share a smile and a hug and is exactly the kind of fella one would be lucky to call a friend.
TELL US SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW. Anyone close to me knows this, my dad robbed a bank when I was a teenager. He spent 21 years in prison and now he lives in a nudist colony in Florida. Whenever I call him, I get his voicemail and his response for not answering is, “Sorry, I missed your call, I don’t have pockets.”
WHO IS THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU HAVE EVER MET IN SUWANEE? Angie and Randall Veugeler. They are two of the most influential residents of Suwanee, yet they are the kindest, most loving, and just downright the coolest people that I’ve ever met.
WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE? A little bit of everything, it just depends on my mood. It’s an unpopular view, but my least favorite kind of music is country.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A CROWD OF PEOPLE? Make love (pause) a verb not a noun!
WOULD YOU RATHER SING TO A CROWD OF 50 PEOPLE OR SPEAK TO A CROWD OF 500? Neither, but give me a couple of beers and I will dance in front of any size crowd. F For more of this interview, go to TheFacesOfSuwanee.com
