Savoring the Summer

UMMER HAS always been my favorite time of year. I love that the days are long and it doesn’t get dark until 9 p.m., the lake, the fireflies, playing basketball with our boys, and that things slow down with more time for family and less rushing around. As our first-born son heads to college this August, I am acutely aware of time spent as a family. I’m trying to appreciate the little things and savor these moments together. This issue is full of things to savor, from delicious food to ways to connect with family and friends.

Suwanee’s Summer Porch Jam in June was a celebration of the city’s 75th Anniversary and welcomed residents and visitors of all ages to enjoy live music on the front porches along Main Street in Suwanee. For more photos of the event, visit facebook.com/ SuwaneeMagazine.

For our annual Food Issue, we brought back the Best Pizza Competition . With 12 serious contenders, our judges had trouble choosing a winner — there were so many unique and delicious pies! Turn to p. 30 to find out who came out on top. One of the things people love about this area is all of the amazing restaurants. Our Restaurant Guide on p. 44 lists all different types of cuisine that you can find throughout our community. We also spotlighted the new-to-Suwanee Korean restaurant Kimchi Red , founded by a couple working to foster community through faith and delicious food. They were also voted the No. 1 fried chicken restaurant in the country according to Yelp! Read their story on p. 39. Looking for tips to connect as a family this summer? Check out Family Matters with Jennifer Wilmoth on p. 26 for the benefits of eating together as a family. Party Hacks with Nat on p. 64 shares summer soirée ideas to help you make memories and savor every last moment of the summer.

In honor of the City of Suwanee’s 75th anniversary this year, we asked our readers what they love about Suwanee. We had so many great responses and I thoroughly enjoyed reading each one. As I read through them, I had an overwhelming feeling of pride for our community. When we moved to Suwanee in 2006, we were just starting our family and the top reasons we moved here were the greenway and parks (I really wanted to be near a trail to run on) and the affordable cost of living at the time. Now that we have been here 18 years (I can’t believe it has been 18 years!), while I still love our beautiful green spaces, what truly stands out is the sense of community, the wonderful friendships we have formed, and the many amazing people who live here. God put us here on purpose when we were starting our family, and there is something very special about this place we are fortunate to call home. Turn to p. 16 to hear what our readers love about Suwanee.

I hope you enjoy this issue and find plenty to savor!

Master Captain Doug Dixon shares his knowledge of and passion for striper fishing on Lake Lanier.
Striped bass, or “stripers,” are one of the favorite fish to catch on Lake Lanier.

NORTH GEORGIA CHARTERS

CAPTAIN DOUG DIXON OF NORTH GEORGIA CHARTERS HELPS NAVIGATE THE WATERS OF NORTH GEORGIA

N THE serene landscapes of North Georgia, where misty mornings give way to sunlit afternoons over Lake Lanier, Captain Doug Dixon has carved out a niche for himself with North Georgia Charters. His journey to becoming a popular fishing guide is as winding and rich as the waters he navigates daily.

From Corporate Tides to Lake Lanier's Waves

➤ Doug has not always held the title "Captain." His career began in a completely different environment, defined by boardrooms, financial portfolios, and corporate deadlines. Doug was deeply entrenched in the mortgage industry, where he held significant roles and achieved notable success. However, the financial crisis of 2008 was a turning point. "I took the go-away money," Doug recalls with a mix of humor and resignation. The "parachute," as he refers to it, became the catalyst for a significant life change. It was a shift from the high-stress, high-stakes world of finance to the tranquil, albeit challenging, waters of fishing — a longtime passion of his.

The Call of the Water

➤ F ishing wasn't a new pursuit for Doug; it had always been a dream simmering in the background. His wife Duffie had often encouraged him to consider it seriously, especially as a way to mitigate the immense stress from his corporate job. However, practical obstacles like economic downturns and droughts delayed his plans. But fate, or perhaps something more divine, had its way. Doug shares a poignant moment from his transition period: "We are believers. We go to church. During a particularly tough time, I remember hearing a story on the radio about the drought and its effect on the lake — 'two ramps are now open, and a third will be open by the end of next week to help attract the fishermen.' Duffie looked at me and said, 'I think that's your sign.'"

“THERE'S SOMETHING PROFOUNDLY REWARDING ABOUT BEING ON THE WATER, HELPING PEOPLE TO RELAX AND ENJOY LIFE.”

“IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT CATCHING FISH; IT'S ABOUT ENJOYING THE WATER, LEARNING SOMETHING NEW, AND CONNECTING WITH NATURE.”

Setting Sail: North Georgia Charters

➤ With Duffie's support and a newfound determination, Doug pursued his dream. He earned his captain's license from the U.S. Coast Guard, a process that involved rigorous training and certification. Initially, he acquired a "six-pack" license, which allowed him to take up to six passengers at a time. Later, Doug achieved the status of a Master Captain, enabling him to manage larger groups and more substantial vessels.

"People often think the title 'captain' is just a selfappointed moniker, but it's something you earn from the government," Doug explains. "It's a major merchant mariner credential."

A Day in the Life of Captain Doug

➤ On any given day, you'll find Captain Doug on the waters of Lake Lanier, a picturesque reservoir known for its excellent striper fishing. His charter service, North Georgia Charters, offers personalized fishing experiences, catering to everyone from novice anglers to seasoned fishermen.

Doug's approach to his business is deeply personal and client-focused. He prides himself on not just guiding fishing trips but creating memorable experiences. "It's not just about catching fish; it's about

enjoying the water, learning something new, and connecting with nature," Doug says. "Whether you've fished a lifetime or just want to see how it's done, I want clients to have a fun, memorable, and successful day on the water."

Networking and Community Engagement

➤ Beyond the fishing trips, Doug is an active member of the local business community. He regularly attends chamber of commerce luncheons, where he networks with other local entrepreneurs and stays engaged with the economic pulse of the region. "It's important to stay connected and support each other," Doug says. "The relationships you build in the community are invaluable."

Reflections on a New Path

➤ Looking back, Doug acknowledges the unlikely twists and turns that led him to where he is today. Originally from California, Doug and his wife

moved around, from Sacramento to Idaho to North Carolina, and finally settled in Georgia. His diverse background — from surfing in Malibu to managing large financial portfolios in Idaho — has given him a unique perspective and a wealth of stories to share with his clients.

"I've been blessed with the opportunity to reinvent myself," Doug reflects.

"Moving from the mortgage industry to running a fishing charter has been a drastic change, but it's one that I wouldn't trade for anything. There's something profoundly rewarding about being on the water, helping people relax and enjoy life."

Expanding Horizons: Sailing Charters in the British Virgin Islands

➤ While Doug's heart and business are anchored in Lake Lanier, his passion for the water extends far beyond Georgia. In addition to running North Georgia

North Georgia Charters offers personalized fishing experiences, catering to everyone from novice anglers to seasoned fisherman.

Charters, Doug offers sailing charters in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). This venture allows him to combine his love of sailing with his desire to provide unique experiences for his clients.

With its crystal-clear waters, steady trade winds, and picturesque islands, the BVI is a sailor's dream. Doug's sailing charters offer a different adventure than the freshwater fishing trips on Lake Lanier. "Sailing in the BVI is about the journey and the destination," Doug says. Clients can expect a tailored experience that includes sailing instruction, exploring secluded beaches, and snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs.

Doug's expertise and warm personality make these sailing charters an unforgettable experience. Whether it's a family vacation, a romantic getaway, or an adventure with friends, Captain Doug, along with First Mate Duffie, ensures that each trip is customized to meet the needs and desires of his clients. His knowledge of the area and his sailing skills create a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone on board.

More Than Just a Captain

➤ Captain Doug Dixon's story is a testament to the power of resilience and the pursuit of passion. From the turbulent waves of the financial industry to the serene waters of Lake Lanier, Doug's journey underscores a universal truth: It's never too late to change course and follow your heart. Whether you're reeling in a striped bass or simply soaking in the tranquility of the lake, a day with Captain Doug promises not just a fishing trip but a memorable voyage guided by a man who truly understands the value of every catch and every moment.

In North Georgia, Captain Doug isn't just a master of fishing charters; he's a master of crafting experiences, one fishing trip at a time. ■

INVESTMENT STRATEGIES

Will inflation be an ongoing problem?

We believe it will be an investment factor indefinitely.

Consider this. The U.S. now has over 33 trillion in federal debt and over a trillion dollars of annual interest payments.1 Those trillion-dollar interest payments can no longer be spent on education, power grids, roads, bridges, the elderly, the handicapped, or anything else of value – just debt payments – like a giant credit card – no principal pay-down, just interest.

Will the debt be paid off? Not in my opinion, and the debt payments will continue. The last 4 presidents (BOTB – Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden) increased our national debt sevenfold. 2 With nothing to show for it. The first 42 U.S. presidents ran up a national debt of $5 trillion over a 224year span. BOTB added another $30 trillion in just 24 years. 2 Where is this headed?

Is this strictly a U.S. problem? No. Governments around the world have now racked up over 300 trillion in debt. 3 How can governments afford to make the ongoing “credit card” payments on those borrowed funds? Simple, by devaluing our money and thus making the payments cheaper. This is accomplished by printing “bogus bucks” or “funny money.” “Quantitative Easing” (simply printing more and more money – quantity – to cover easing the trillions of overspending) was the term coined by Ben Bernanke (former Federal Reserve Chairman). 4 Does your dollar still buy as much at the grocery store? No! The government will also make its interest payments with less valuable dollars. This is how inflation is deliberately created and why.

We suggest you invest accordingly. The stock market has generally been an asset class that has provided inflationplus returns over the decades. Since 1960, the S&P 500 has averaged over 10% in annual returns while inflation has averaged 3.75%. 5 ■

You can find quiet, or you can find excitement on any given weekend. Your children will get a great education and also learn about civic involvement and volunteerism. 3 Benefits of Family Meals

ET’S FACE it: Finding a time when the whole family can meet around a table for meals can be challenging, especially with busy activity and work schedules. I face similar challenges as a mom of two, but after many years as a marriage and family therapist, I’m convinced it is well worth the effort for all the benefits it can bring to your family. The great news is family meals do not have to take a long time or be home cooked to offer many benefits. You can meet at your favorite restaurant, get takeout to eat in a park, or even eat leftovers from the night before. If dinner is a difficult time to get everyone in one place, try breakfast together instead. There are lots of options to help fit a meal with your family into the schedule. Try to focus on choosing an environment where you can make eye contact and conversation with your family to experience the most benefits from the time together

Here are some benefits you may experience:

1) Boost Academic Performance

➤ Kids who have frequent family dinners (5-7 per week) are more likely to receive better grades in school. This could be due to the structured mealtime giving parents more opportunity to check in and engage with their child around their education, and offering support and encouragement that translates to better academic outcomes.

2) Improved Well-being

➤ The consistent, supportive environment of family meals provides emotional stability and a sense of belonging, important for mental wellbeing. In fact, regular family meals are associated with a reduction in depression in teens and are linked to better overall self-esteem. This is likely due to the increase in hormones in the brain during these family interactions such as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. Kids and teens are also more likely to make better food choices during family meals which can improve sleep, mood, and energy levels.

3) Improved Family Relationships

➤ Shared mealtime conversations help build deeper connections and a stronger sense of family bond. Eye contact and conversation during meals help to release oxytocin in our brains which is known as the bonding hormone. The more regularly you have these moments with your family, the more bonded and connected the family will likely feel. These moments can happen outside of mealtime as well, but when you plan for regular family meals it helps to bring a daily rhythm to this type of connection.

Family meals are more than just a time to eat; they are a great opportunity to connect, communicate, and support each other. By making regular family meals a priority, whether at home or at a favorite restaurant, you can significantly enhance your family’s academic performance, mental health, and relationships. So, find a table, gather your loved ones, and enjoy the benefits that come with this simple yet impactful family tradition. ■

Ask Fanny

The mascot of Sugar Hill Animal Hospital answers questions about your pet’s health.

Q: My Yorkshire Terrier “Bentley” drags his bottom on the carpet. Does he have worms?

A: When a dog drags his hindquarters along the ground, he is usually trying to empty his anal glands. Dogs are in the same Canidae

family as skunks and have similar glands that can get impacted. The old wives’ tale of having worms is rarely true in dogs dragging their bottom. Please see your veterinarian about having your dog's glands expressed or in chronic cases, surgically removed.

Q: “Chairman Meow,” my 14-year-old cat, has started meowing loudly at night and acting senile. Do cats get Alzheimer’s disease?

- Brianna J. (Buford)

A: The most common cause for a personality change in senior cats is due to hyperthyroidism. Usually, this is caused by a benign growth on the thyroid gland. The excess production of thyroid hormone can lead to increased appetite, weight loss, hyperactivity, and erratic vocalization. Your veterinarian can do a simple blood test to check for this disease that can be treated by diet, medication, surgery, or even radiation treatment.

Q: Should my dog be on a grain-free diet as recommended by my pet superstore?

Joey T. (Sugar Hill)

A: In my opinion, the “grain-free” diet is simply a marketing strategy for pet food companies. If a pet truly has an allergy to a specific grain (as confirmed by a 6-week true food trial), then, of course, they should be on a grain-free diet. A significant increase in heart disease (dilated cardiomyopathy) has been seen in dogs lacking grains in their diet. Most pets benefit from a balanced diet of protein and carbohydrates. Be sure to ask your veterinarian for a recommendation for your specific pet.

RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT: KIMCHI RED

Indulge in Korea’s Finest Flavors

Unique Korean dishes and the nation’s No. 1 fried chicken can be found right here in Suwanee at Kimchi Red Korean Gourmet Kitchen, a standout establishment that caters to all cultures and works to foster a community through faith and delicious food.

Kimchi Red Korean Gourmet Kitchen

IF YOU’RE a fan of fried chicken you’re in luck, because according to Yelp, the nation’s No. 1 fried chicken can be found right here in Suwanee. The title belongs to Kimchi Red, a Korean restaurant specializing in unique dishes from the mind of its owners, Alice and Joey Lee.

As an original concept rooted in Korean cuisine, Kimchi Red is a standout establishment that caters to all cultures and works to foster a community through faith and delicious food.

While the Lees may claim that this road to success has been a lifelong journey, they earned the No. 1 spot after being open less than two years at their original location in Alpharetta. This spring, they opened their second location in Suwanee.

“We came up with Kimchi because we wanted people to immediately identify the name with Korean food...”

Kimchi Red is their latest venture in a long list of retail businesses — and their most successful. So, what made this time different? What made this the gold standard of fried chicken?

Alice’s answer is simple: “It was God-given.”

“It's not written on our

Instagram page or anything, but we want to honor and glorify God in everything we do with excellence,” Alice says, “so we cook as if we're cooking for our family.”

Even with Chef Joey W. Lee’s tireless commitment to crafting quality dishes and Alice’s dedication to unmatched customer service, they refuse to take much of the credit. Alice attributes it all to their faith, perhaps not-socoincidentally where their story began.

“For many years we've tried to be faithful servants, serving people whenever the opportunity arose, " Alice says. "I think our journey led us where we are now."

Kimchi Red, a name that Lee trademarked almost 20 years ago, was never meant to be the name for a restaurant. Their initial plan was to go into manufacturing for a retail food product under the Kimchi Red brand name.

“We came up with Kimchi because we wanted people to immediately identify the name with Korean food,” Alice says. “Kimchi is Korean, but Red was just a sort of a play on words

where people would think, ‘adjective before noun’ or Red Kimchi. But to be a little bit different, we switched it to ‘Kimchi Red.’ It had a better ring to it, so we trademarked it.”

A Dream Opportunity

The Lees, who came to Georgia for shoe manufacturing, thought opening a restaurant was only a dream.

“When we first moved to Georgia, the Alpharetta location just sort of fell in our lap,” Alice says. “We started off with two items, our House Beef and our Barbecue Jeyuk Plate , and then the menu grew from there.”

Today, that menu is winning awards often attributed to classic Southern eateries. When one thinks of the best chicken in the Southeast — let

alone the nation — they may think of places like Hattie B’s or homegrown barbecue joints, but Kimchi Red has shifted the conversation and drawn quite the crowd to its doors.

“We want to cater to different cultures and all nationalities,” Alice says. “That’s our main goal and we're so thankful that we do get to cater to the Muslim community, the Asian community, the American community, you know, just all cultures in general.”

A Passion for Food

“It's always been Joey’s passion not just to cook, but to cook for people,” Alice says. “He loves feeding people. It could be 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning and if his friends came over he would just cook up whatever.”

Cheesy Buldak Mild, Medium or Hot. Stringy mozzarella "buldak" cheese poured over crispy, K-fried chicken with shots of "Buldak" sauce.
Owner and Head
Chef Joey W. Lee works tirelessly to deliver quality dishes.

It’s no wonder fans have flocked to the reviews with positive impressions. If the taste alone wasn’t enough, the menu is full of generous servings of some of Korea’s finest flavors, all of which have their own Kimchi Red touch.

“I usually give him ideas and then he executes the ideas,” Alice says. “Butter Fly is one of my favorites.” The Butter Fly is a whole chicken marinated a minimum of 48 hours, retaining the flavor with a juicy, tender, and crispy finish. Because of the prep time involved, Butter Fly Chicken must be pre-ordered beforehand. Other crowd favorites include the Spicy Jeon Ju , made as mild or as spicy as customers like it, the Red Buldak , which Alice dubs a “TikTok special,” and the Mega Fries , fully loaded French fries with a Korean twist.

“Everything we do is with excellence,” Alice says. Upon a trip to Kimchi Red, nothing would tell you differently. It is clear from top to bottom that the Lees are dedicated not only to their craft, but to be servants of God as well.

“I think it's seen and felt through our daily life in how we treat people and how we conduct our business with integrity, excellence, honesty, and faith.” ■

Elixir Brew Co.

Downtown Buford’s first brewery adds an innovative flair to historic Main Street.

Brew Co.

HE IDEA for Elixir Brew Co. was concocted when coworkers Ryan Keysar and Chad Davis shared a beer after work.

One beer led to regular outings, each one at a different brewery. These beer stops unleashed their passion for craft beer, leading them to the ultimate experiment, homebrewing. Many recipes later, in May of 2024, Keysar and Davis opened the doors to Elixir Brew Co., downtown Buford’s first brewery. This newly opened community hub adds an innovative flair to Main Street, created with a passion for craftsmanship, and to celebrate the art of brewing.

We interviewed co-owner and brewmaster Ryan Keysar to learn more about the story behind Elixir, their brewing approach, and how they landed in Buford.

How did you get involved in the craft beer industry? My journey into the craft beer industry began during my college years, right in the heart of the southeastern craft brewery boom. It was an exciting time to be a part of the beer culture, as new breweries were popping up seemingly everywhere, each with

their unique twist on traditional brewing methods.

During this period, I was introduced to a wide variety of craft beers, each offering distinct flavors and stories behind their creation. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the art of craft beer. What fascinated me the most was the creative artistry involved in making a craft brew. I was drawn to the idea that brewing wasn’t just about following a recipe; it was about innovation, experimentation, and a deep passion for the craft. It's an idea that my colleague Chad Davis shared as well, then it was

a slippery slope! We started by visiting local breweries, talking to brewers, and participating in tasting events. The more we learned, the more intrigued we became by the process of crafting unique beers. The blend of science and creativity required to produce a high-quality brew was captivating. Then one evening at a coffee shop, Chad and I started talking about unleashing our inner mad scientists. The glorious jug homebrewing began. We began experimenting, testing out recipes, trying out different ingredients and techniques, which further deepened our appreciation

for the craft. From the jug we went to a legitimate homebrew system, with chilling, CO2 and a tap system. After much feedback from friends and family, we decided to share our passion with the masses.

Why Buford?

The true sense of community. Buford is different in the best way, from its history to its schools, but most importantly its people.

We wouldn’t want to start this anywhere else.

What is the story behind the name Elixir? The story behind Elixir is to bring creators or “mad scientists” together. Masters of their craft sharing their creations. It’s why the branding of Elixir is centered around the yet-to-benamed scientist. It really drives

Party Hacks with Nat

Summer Soirée

THERE ARE few pleasures in life that can be compared to a summer evening in the South. Sure, the heat can get the best of all of us… but once the sun begins to go down, something else inside of us seems to arise. It’s a chance to slow down and relish in this season of stringing together lifelong memorymaking moments. So, if you’re searching for an excuse to seize the day and host an unforgettable affair before summer comes to an end, look no further!

FLOWER POWER

 The concept of building your own flower bouquet has really taken off in recent years. The joy of fresh flowers never gets old, and the nostalgic feeling of picking out individual blossoms offers a renewed energy that can’t be described. If you’re hosting a bridal or baby shower, or throwing an engagement or birthday party, consider this idea as your next best party trick. You can set up a dedicated station or rolling cart to display all of the supplies, including various flowers, vases and jars, and ribbon or twine. Guests will be both entertained and excited to take home their floral masterpiece.

Alternatively, if there’s not a milestone on the agenda to celebrate, use this opportunity to introduce a bouquet swap with friends. Let your invitees know to bring a bouquet of flowers, then let everyone mix and match to bring a brand new arrangement to life. This is a guaranteed stress-free and low-budget way to interact with others on a magical summer evening.

ADULT PIZZA PARTY

 If you ask me, you can never outgrow a pizza party... especially when you find a way

to make it grow up with you. Insert: the adult pizza party. Whether it’s an Italian-themed date night with other couples or an indulgent girls’ night, bad times have never been shared over a cheesy slice of pie. You can take the create-your-own approach where you provide a variety of sauces and toppings for guests to partake in the pizza-baking process together. Or, you can opt for the bringyour-own option where you request that each guest or couple contributes a pizza that’s already prepared and ready to share. Either way, I recommend adding another layer to the event by incorporating a wine pairing. This will generate more conversation and lead to an even more memorable evening. Plus, you’ll embark on an educational journey of exploring exactly which vino complements each pizza the best!

Suwanee Magazine's official party queen shares insights on making your next event a smashing success!

MOONLIT MOVIE NIGHT

 Sometimes all you need to elevate a classic movie night is to take it outdoors. With all of the nifty gadgets available these days, projecting a movie has become more affordable and seamless than ever. You can totally amp this up as an endof-summer party with neighbors or back-toschool bash with friends, or really any occasion worth commemorating with family. As with most parties, however, snacks are not negotiable and must steal the show. The movie selection is fully up to your discretion, but I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t mention a few of my go-to bites fitting for the big screen:

Popcorn Palooza: Sure, popcorn is an obvious choice… but let’s give it the enhancement it deserves by offering a medley of upgrades. Think beyond the butter, like cheddar powder, chocolate sauce, melted caramel, powdered sugar, buffalo seasoning, and more. Bonus points if you go the extra mile and invest in disposable popcorn bags or reusable popcorn buckets!

Candy Salad Station: Thanks to TikTok, the candy salad sensation has taken the social media world by storm. This is really just a trendy term for tossing a bunch of different candies together in a bowl, but hey - it’s a crowd pleaser. You could pre-make different themed candy salads, such as a sour mix, chocolate mix, chewy mix, etc. Or, revert back to the DIY approach where party goers can satisfy their own sweet tooths.

Fruit Pizza

➽ Despite what the occasion is, who’s on the guest list, or what the rest of the menu looks like, I’m here to tell you that fruit pizza is the answer. It can be sliced and plated elegantly for a more formal soirée, or you can let the kiddos shamelessly devour it at a more casual shindig. And with a little prep ahead of time, this Instagram-worthy delight can be assembled and served in no time. Read on and savor this irresistible summertime sweet treat!

Base:

• 16 ounces vanilla yogurt (half of a 2-pound tub)

• 4 ounces Cool Whip (half of an 8-ounce tub)

• 1.7 ounces cheesecake flavored JELL-O instant pudding & pie filling (half of a 3.4-ounce box)

*Note: This is just using the dry mix from the box, not making the pudding as directed per the box.

This recipe makes up my personal favorite fruit dip, therefore has changed my fruit pizza game forever. With a velvety consistency and not too overly sweet, it’s no longer just for dipping! Half of the recipe (as shown above) is plenty for one pizza, but feel free to mix up the full amount if you’re making multiple pizzas or simply want leftover dip for munching. Here’s how easily it comes together:

Directions: Set the Cool Whip out at room temperature to soften. Mix together the Cool Whip and yogurt in a bowl. Sprinkle in the cheesecake JELL-O mix and stir well. Refrigerate overnight to allow the JELL-O mix to fully dissolve into mixture.

Sugar Cookie Crust

• 1 cup softened butter

• 1 cup granulated sugar

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1 large egg

Trail Mix Bar: Trail mix doesn’t discriminate and is truly welcomed by all. From pretzels, peanuts, and Chex cereal to Cheez-Its, Goldfish, and rye chips, having a spread of salty snacks is enough to cure any craving. Just don’t forget the M&Ms, because it’s all about balance, right?

• ½ teaspoon salt

• 2 teaspoons baking powder

• 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

I’m a fan of this particular dough recipe for fruit pizza as it holds its shape and texture so effectively. It’s a foundation of sweetness that’s dense enough to support the fruit dip and toppings, without drying out or becoming soggy over time. Store-bought cookie dough can certainly be used as a substitute, but the quick and simple process to mixing up these few ingredients might change your mind:

Directions: In a stand mixer (or in a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer), beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the vanilla and egg, then continue beating for another 30 seconds or so. Add the salt and baking powder, then slowly add the flour while continuing to mix until all flour is well incorporated and a dough has formed. Press the dough into an even layer on the bottom of a round 12-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees until the edges turn golden brown, about 14 minutes.

Once the fruit dip has set - and the crust has cooled completely - it’s time to layer. Spread the fruit dip over the crust, then top with your desired fruit. I like an assortment of blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, kiwi, and mandarin oranges. These flavors marry well together, plus the variation in size and color makes for an aesthetically appetizing dish. But, feel free to personalize with your preferred fruit - just be sure to towel-dry as much moisture out of the fruit as possible to help avoid any additional unwanted sogginess. Enjoy!

Wishing y'all a spectacular summer! - Natalie

SUWANEE STUDENT WINS PRIZE IN INTERNATIONAL ARTEFFECT COMPETITION

A SUWANEE student won a cash prize this year during the 9th annual International ARTEFFECT Competition. The finalists were selected from a pool of skilled students grades 6-12 across the world that created visual art projects to celebrate “Unsung Heroes” from history. Participants were tasked with illuminating the lives of underappreciated individuals who made a lasting impact on history.

Cailyn Yoon, a freshman from Lambert High School in Suwanee, was one of four students to receive a $1,000 Spotlight Prize from The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes. Her piece titled Shadows of War was inspired by Chester Nez, one of the “First TwentyNine” Navajo Code Talkers in World War ll. Yoon made an incredible graphite drawing, depicting the many hours Chester Nez spent translating during the war.

There were two other winners from Georgia, both recent graduates of the Savannah Arts Academy. Along with their cash prizes, the winners will also have their projects and impact statements showcased on the Lowell Milken Center website, LowellMilkenCenter.org.

PLAYTOWN SUWANEE 2.0 OPENS TO THE COMMUNITY

THE CITY of Suwanee held a grand opening celebration on June 1st, 2024, to welcome back the redeveloped community playground, PlayTown Suwanee. Established in 2004 through the collaborative efforts of hundreds of volunteers, the original PlayTown Suwanee quickly became the most beloved community playground, with its large and engaging play structures. After 20 years, the wooden materials needed replacing and it was decided the playground would be rebuilt.

The city wanted to once again make this a collaborative effort. Members from all aspects of the Suwanee community contributed to the design, from interviews with over 300 local schoolchildren, to involvement from local high school artists and Suwanee Youth Leaders (SYL), to a steering committee of adults.

Recognizing the importance of maintaining this cherished community asset, more than 1,200 volunteers, including long-

time and new residents, parents and grandparents, city staff, and groups representing many facets of our community, rallied once again in the fall of 2023 to spearhead the construction of the new playground.

Thanks to massive support from the community and sponsor Primerica, PlayTown Suwanee has been brought back to life, spanning over 13,000 square feet, and the vibrancy of this new playground will have a lasting impact.

Built primarily of recycled plastics, PlayTown Suwanee remains an environmentally conscious space for play. The playground features separate areas for toddlers and older children, a dinosaur fossil excavation activity area, and wheelchair accessible structures for allinclusive play.

Months of teamwork, collaboration, and undeterred community spirit made the dream of rebuilding the cherished playground come to life. PlayTown Suwanee is located at 425 Main St, Suwanee.

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I have been married to my bride, Jillian, for 23 years. We have three kids, Liam (17), Dean (15), and Lillian (13).

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT AND PAST CAREER. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT IT?

I have been the principal at Level Creek Elementary for 11 years. I love the North Gwinnett community and people. Working with such wonderful students, teachers, and parents is a blessing each day. Before joining the NG community, I was an Assistant Principal at McConnell Middle School in Grayson and a 2nd and 4th-grade teacher at Magill Elementary in Snellville.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED OR WORKED HERE? I have worked in Suwanee for 11 years and my family moved here 8 years ago.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SUWANEE?

As an educator, I am impressed with the emphasis the community places on education. As our children grow bright and strong, so will our community!

WHAT CURRENT OR FORMER BUSINESS, OR PLACE, MAKES YOU FEEL THE MOST NOSTALGIC ABOUT SUWANEE? Each time I see Suwanee Town Center, I remember my children years ago asking if we could stop to throw the football, pet dogs, and run around on the walls. The feelings are especially nostalgic around Christmas time when my kids would look at the bright tree and hanging lights in awe.

IF YOU COULD TAKE ANYONE TO LUNCH, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THAT BE? I would like to talk to Marcus Aurelius. He was the leader of much of the world and was still focused and grounded.

WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

I would like to get his opinion on Korean Barbecue and Dippin’ Dots. I bet he would like both

WHAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN? Colorado, where I grew up.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST MOVIE YOU REMEMBER SEEING IN A THEATER? Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A CROWD OF PEOPLE?

I don’t think I would advise a crowd of people. I would get them talking to each other. I’m sure that they have great advice to share with their neighbors.

TELL US SOMETHING THAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST. I would like to see the Milky Way from a very dark, very high desert on a clear night.

WHO IS THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU HAVE EVER MET IN SUWANEE? There are so many!

Joe Manus comes to mind. He is a furniture designer, loving husband, and great dad. His furniture designs are fantastic, and his stories may be even better.

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE? I love all types of music! Currently, my office background music is the Mellow Blues playlist on Spotify. Concerts are the best way to listen. My family went to a Jamestown Revival concert last year and had a blast.

TELL ME SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW. I love Brazilian Jiujitsu! I train at Creighton MMA in Suwanee. The place is fantastic. There is no better place to work out and take your mind off of life’s troubles. The people who train there are fantastic and keep the drilling and the rolling playful. There are great fitness classes, weight training, and machines as well.

WOULD YOU RATHER SING TO A CROWD OF 50 PEOPLE OR SPEAK TO A CROWD OF 500? I think we would all prefer if I spoke rather than sang! ■

SUGAR HILL RESTAURANT GUIDE

Make your day a little sweeter by visiting Downtown Sugar Hill for a bite. With a variety of restaurants and quick eats to choose from, Downtown Sugar Hill offers something for everyone. Plus, enjoy live music with Music at Sugar Hill on select dates until September.

START YOUR morning right at Rushing Trading Co., a charming brunch spot with a menu to satisfy any palate. Sugar Hill locals particularly enjoy Truly’s Stuffed French Toast, filled with delightful cream cheese.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, Scoops is a must-visit, especially if you have little ones. Begin your day by cooling off at the Splash Park, then treat yourself to the best ice cream in the city at Scoops or take a stroll along the Promenade and stop by Shine Pizza, a local pizzeria serving mouthwatering pies that will leave you craving more.

Distillery serves delicious Euroinspired treats, fine spirits, and craft beers. If you're craving authentic Mexican food, Rreal Tacos is the place to be, located near the Sugar Hill Art Gallery and Museum.

For date night, consider our upscale dining experiences.

Central City Tavern, the Sugar Hill Distillery, and Rreal Tacos are perfect for any occasion. Central City Tavern offers amazing bar food, making it ideal for a casual date night. The Sugar Hill

For a more adult night out, downtown Sugar Hill has Shine district status, allowing you to carry a beverage within the downtown area with a Shine sticker on your cup. Enjoy drinks from The Rooftop, Talk of the Table, or Indio Brewing Co. as you explore the vibrant streets. If you prefer to dine in, plan to buy your produce from Sugar Hill

Farmers Market every Tuesday until October, starting at 4 p.m. The market is located at The Landing, the newest plaza behind The Bowl.
