Surrounded by the natural springs of Kings Bay, one of the largest aquifers in the state, Crystal River is home to more than 400 West Indian manatees that migrate each year to the warmth of the springs. Our onsite activities range from golf to boating and fishing with so much in-between and we offer several specials and packages to help sculpt your perfect vacation! There’s always something fun to do at Plantation on Crystal River! TRADITIONAL FLORIDA-STYLE GOLF Our exclusive Central Florida golf resort features 27 holes of competitive and challenging golf. Our course was designed in the traditional

“Florida” style with variety of water and bunker obstacles, along with challenging fairways lined by mature emerald pine and oak trees native to the region. If it’s a short course you prefer, “The Lagoons” is a great option to sharpen your short game. If you’re into hitting monster drives, try our “Championship Course” which consists of 18 holes of world-class golf. All of our links are beautifully manicured and well-groomed, and they provide a traditional mix of the best golf Florida has to offer. RELAX IN TOTAL COMFORT IN OUR CRYSTAL RIVER ROOMS Packed with all the comforts of home, our Crystal River resort suites and guestrooms have everything you need for a perfect stay. Choose from our patio rooms, with unique outdoor lounging areas, or our rooms with views of the garden or

water. No matter what room you choose, you won’t be disappointed because we fill them all with excellent amenities for you and your family. Our Golf Villas provide the perfect accommodations for your group. FISHING AT ITS FINEST Few places compare to Crystal River when it comes to salt or freshwater sport fishing. There really isn’t a better place for an inshore slam of tarpon, redfish, and speckled trout. Offshore opportunities include grouper, a variety of snapper, smoker kingfish, and cobia. If freshwater

fishing is more your interest, our area has multiple lakes and reservoirs with excellent fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bream, catfish, and more. We can also arrange a charter with one of our area’s fishing guides that will pick you up from our own dock for charters. And make sure to bring your catch back to our resort so the chef of our West 82º Grill can cook it for you! THE PLACE TO STAY & PLAY ON THE NATURE COAST Our #1 concern is your safety and wellbeing. Our resort adheres to all mandated CDC guidelines

FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

and State COVID provisions. Bring your friends or your family and let them enjoy our full-service spa, manatee tours, fishing, and diving while you hit the links. There’s never been a better time to head to our resort and discover how Plantation on Crystal River helps make Florida one of the top golf destinations in the world. The Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club

St. Pete Beach

If you’re looking to play on a gorgeous island (who isn’t?), the Vinoy Golf Course, located on Snell Island, was re-designed by renowned course architect, Ron Garl, and put back into play in 1992. Conditions for play are ideal year-round, with cool Gulf breezes in summertime and a perfect, warm escape in the winter. Take it up a notch and try a round at Dunedin Golf Club. Former home of the PGA of America, this 18-hole course was designed by world-renowned golf course architect Donald Ross. The facility went through a major restoration with the rebuilding of greens, tees and bunkers in 2006 through 2007, which has restored the course to nearly the same as when Ross originally brought it to life. After a day on the golf course, head over to the all-new St. Pete Pier, a beautiful 26-acre waterfront oasis surrounded by the sparkling blue waters of Tampa Bay. Grab a tasty bite and an ice-cold drink at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar and Grill, serving up authentic Florida cuisine. Peruse shops and artist galleries or take a relaxing walk along the 3,000 feet of walkways. Kick back in a colorful Adirondack chair as you watch the people go by or opt for a rooftop view at Pier Teaki. Come discover the newly expanded Clearwater Marine Aquarium offering adventure for the whole family. From the thrilling and interactive exhibits to a specially designated area for rescue animals, you’ll feel totally immersed in a new, fascinating world with five times more space for guests. Plus, 35 miles of sugar white sand beaches are here for you to enjoy. Unwind in the warm sun, stick your toes in the soft sand, and take in a fiery sunset to top off your day. Whether you plan to visit for one night or a few days, there are endless hotels, vacation rentals and renovated timeless landmarks to make your home away from home. From world-renowned golf courses to world-class beaches, unbeatable dining to delicious craft cocktails, you can’t go wrong in St. Pete/Clearwater. Discover it all at VisitStPeteClearwater.com.

Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Course

The Copperhead’s elevation tests the best players in the world each year at the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship. The 7,340-yard, par71 brute, designed by the imaginative architect Lawrence Packard, is one of the PGA Tour’s favorite stops. Paul Azinger, a 12-time PGA Tour winner, called it the best course the PGA Tour plays. The Copperhead meanders through beautiful trees and landscaping with water strategically placed to test golfers of all levels. Innisbrook’s other courses offer an enjoyable challenge as well. The 7,310-yard, par-72 Island Course, in particular, can prove every bit as tough as the Copperhead.

Reunion Resort & Golf Club Reunion Resort and Golf Club offers a golfing experience unlike any other in the world. Receiving accolades and awards from several golf publications, Reunion is the only place you will find three Signature Design courses by golf ’s greatest legends: Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Arnold Palmer. If you find yourself at Reunion, and you only have time for one course, we recommend the Palmer course. It’s the least challenging of the three, but it boasts the most spectacular views of the resort. You will play through bunkers, lush greenery, and some of our luxury rental homes. The Palmer 7 hole is the most iconic of all 36 holes at Reunion. You might recognize Palmer 7 by its vantage point of the long winding bridge over a sparkling pond with the resort’s Grande Tower standing elegantly in the distance. The Palmer course offers 6,916 yards of rolling terrain with elevation changes up to 50 feet. The Watson course is adjacent to the Palmer. Both start just behind the Clubhouse restaurant and Pro Shop. The Clubhouse serves a traditional American breakfast and lunch and is a great spot for a cup of coffee before heading out to the driving range or your morning tee time. Once on the course, you will encounter wide-open greens, rolling fairways, and strategically placed bunkers. Club selection is crucial for this course. The most challenging of Reunion’s three courses is the Nicklaus course. Located on the other side of the resort property and winding through parts of the nature reserve, the Nicklaus course can be a bit quieter and more scenic than Watson or Palmer. This course provides long fairways and

challenging water hazards. At the end of the course, you can wave to your fans as they watch from the clubhouse veranda, which features panoramic views of the 18th green. Inside the Nicklaus Clubhouse, you’ll find men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers, the Pro Shop, and a tavern-style restaurant called Traditions. Traditions is the ideal spot for your post-round meal and celebratory beverages. Reunion Resort has been consistently recognized for providing a premier golf experience in Central Florida since 2005. Director of Golf and Course Maintenance, Scott Scamehorn, has implemented a new approach to golf course maintenance and care, ensuring the courses are “tournament-ready” every day. “We’re concentrating our efforts down the center lines, while really working hard on perfecting the consistency in playing conditions,” stated Scamehorn. Scamehorn joined Reunion’s team in the spring of 2020, and since then, he has worked with his team to transform Reunion’s courses into three of Florida’s best. “We’re managing all three courses as one,” said Scamehorn. “We’ve adjusted mowing frequency along with pest management and water conservation to improve daily course conditions.” Open to resort guests and members, Reunion’s rolling greens stretch across the 2,300-acre resort, just minutes from Walt Disney World® FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

and other famous Orlando attractions. Reunion attracts avid golfers from around the world looking to experience an enhanced level of play with exceptional conditions and unique course layouts designed by three PGA legends. With spacious multi-room villas and luxury vacation homes featuring up to 13 bedrooms, this property is an easy option for golf trips. In addition to golf, Reunion Resort amenities include a mini-golf course, multiple tennis and pickleball courts with a Pro Shop, casual and fine dining, 10 community pools, a five-acre waterpark, and 25,000 square feet of meeting and event space. Whether it’s a family vacation, a golf trip with the guys, or a girls’ trip, Reunion has something for everyone. Central Florida

The Hidden Gem of Florida Golf Golfers who live in Central Florida already know, and more visitors are beginning to learn, some truly fantastic golf opportunities abound throughout Central Florida’s Polk County. With more than 40 public access courses offering 612 holes of golf, Central Florida’s Polk County boasts one of the top collections of golf courses in the United States. Golf groups traveling to the area will find a wide range of course options and unforgettable off-course activities that will make your Central Florida trip one to remember. UNIQUE COURSE OFFERINGS With so many course offerings it is very difficult to pick our favorites, but when it comes to distinctive course design, one has to begin the conversation with Streamsong Resort. Streamsong Resort’s Red Course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the Blue Course designed by Tom Doak and the Black Course designed by Gil Hanse, utilize the natural contours, sand dunes and native grasses to offer a golf experience that is reminiscent of the links-style courses of the British Isles. Built upon reclaimed phosphate mining land, Streamsong’s courses are atypical of most Florida golf courses.

36

\\

Southern Dunes Golf & Country Club stretches out to more than 7,200 yards from the championship tees and this demanding layout features high ornamental grasses and decorative plantings, paired with 180 distinctively colored bunkers that provide spectacular visual appeal throughout your round of golf. The Club at Eaglebrooke provides a challenging, but fair test of golf for players of all ability levels. Oak trees, numerous lakes and strategically placed mounding define the lush rolling fairways, and visually frame each hole as from the tee. BREWS, BLUES AND BARBEQUE Once the golf clubs have been put away, and the side bets settled, your group can then explore some of the great local dining and entertainment offerings that are available throughout Central Florida’s Polk County. With more than 550 lakes dotting Polk County, locals and visitors alike all have their favorite lakeside dining spot. In Winter Haven, with full length windows and a lakeside patio, Harborside Restaurant is a modern American steakhouse, seafood and oyster bar featuring the finest cuts of dry aged meat and daily

FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

delivered fresh fish. Also in Winter Haven, with its neighborhood restaurant feel and its location on the shores of Lake Ned, no place epitomizes casual lakefront dining more than Harry’s Old Place. Situated on the shores of scenic Lake Pierce. Lakeland’s Lake Mirror is best known for its large events and being a perfect place to catch a spectacular sunset over downtown Lakeland, the lake also serves as the backdrop for Texas Cattle Company, the place for those that have a craving for a nice juicy steak cooked over a specially built open-pit mesquite wood fire. A trip to Florida wouldn’t be complete without fresh seafood. Gary’s Oyster Bar & Seafood House in Lake Alfred is known for its eclectic décor, friendly service and fresh seafood. Crazy Fish Bar and Grill is well worth the drive to Lake Wales. For a little taste of Louisiana, Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grille in Lakeland, serves up some good ‘ole down home Cajun favorites. Mojo Federal Swine and Spirits has transformed Lakeland’s Federal Building into the newest culinary and entertainment experience. Mojo Federal is a premier barbecue, southern food, and craft cocktail destination.

In Central Florida, Lakeland has served as the leader in the brewpub movement. Brew Hub is a partner brewing enterprise that brings together a number of smaller craft brewers to brew their beer. The Brew Hub Tasting Room serves locally sourced, naturally raised, made to order food options that are great for pairing with their beers. Swan Brewing offers lakefront views and microbrews just a few blocks from downtown. Kick back in the taproom or relax on the patio as you sip on a selection of more than 20 seasonal and small-batch beers. Brimming with authenticity and local love, Winter Haven’s Grove Roots Brewing Company looks to create inventive, artisanal beers. With names like “Rind & Shine” and “6am Pickers” scrawled onto the chalkboard tap list, there’s no question Grove Roots is serious about bringing Polk County’s citrus heritage to life. While they don’t serve

food, Grove Roots has a rotating roster of food trucks available for those wishing to eat. On Friday and Saturday nights, live music is offered at the venue. After a long day on the course, and after a delicious meal, the way to cap off the evening is with a trip to the Lakeland Loft Cigar Bar and Jazz Club, an ultra-premium upscale Jazz and cigar lounge, located in historic downtown Lakeland. The Lakeland Loft offers a unique musical experience featuring talented local musicians, with live Jazz performances every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. TAKE IN A GAME No matter what time of year you visit Central Florida, your group can catch some professional sports action. Lakeland has been the spring training home of the Detroit Tigers for more than 80 years. From late February through the month of March, you can catch the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium as they face other Grapefruit League teams such as the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and the Baltimore Orioles. In fact, there are five other MLB teams within an hour’s drive of Lakeland, making it the perfect “home base” for an extended golf and Spring Training tour.

FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

If you prefer the hardcourt to the baseball diamond, Lakeland’s RP Funding Center is home from November to March to the Lakeland Magic, Orlando Magic’s G league affiliate. The Center also plays host to the Major Arena Soccer League’s Florida Tropics from December through April. Each May through July, the Tropics take to the outdoor soccer pitch as they compete in the United Soccer League, one of the MSL’s professional soccer development leagues. CHOOSE EVERYTHING Central Florida’s Polk County is one of the most beautiful and affordable golf destinations in Florida. While not as widely known as its more commercial neighbors, Orlando and Tampa, Polk County is a “hidden gem” that offers hundreds of unique attractions, both natural and man-made, that will provide your golf group with plenty of off-course thrills for the young and old alike. For more details or information on all of our local restaurants and craft breweries, our nightlife and entertainment offerings and exciting area attractions, log on to www.VisitCentralFlorida. org to begin planning your group’s Central Florida golf experience. Florida Grapefruit League Ballparks

OFFER MODERN AMENITIES WHILE LOOKING BACK AT TEAM HISTORY BY NICK GANDY

42

\\

Major League Baseball Spring Training was the State of Florida’s first venture into sports tourism. Beginning in 1923, Florida Spring Training stadiums were constructed in Bradenton, Clearwater, Orlando, St. Petersburg, Fort Myers and West Palm Beach. Four of those communities are hosting Florida Spring Training in the 20s of the 21st century. By 1928, the State of Florida was prospering with a booming population, arriving by automobiles, to live in newly built homes. Baseball was America’s pastime and 10 of the 16 Major League teams held their spring training in Florida. It was a prosperous time for the growth of Florida Spring Training Baseball, even during the Great Depression years, only to be interrupted by the World War II years of 1942-45. Since 2010, nine of the 12 Florida communities have made significant investments in a spring training facility, giving fans topnotch amenities found in the much larger stadiums and arenas around the country. When the Philadelphia Phillies opened their new spring training home, in Clearwater, in 2004, the now BayCare Ballpark featured the first 360 degree walkway around the park. Fans could

FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

now view the game from every angle of the field while soaking up the Florida sunshine on a March afternoon. Over time, Charlotte County Stadium, LECOM Park, Hammond Stadium at the CenturyLink Complex, Jet Blue Park, Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, Clover Park and the TD Ballpark have completed the same feature. In those areas, that were once considered the far reaches of the ballpark, fans can now spread out blankets on the grass, sit in cabana chairs, sip on drinks and enjoy a variety of concession foods, all while watching a Major League Baseball game. In 2020, two Florida communities, Dunedin, home of the Toronto Blue Jays and North Port, home of the 2021 World Series Champion Atlanta Braves, were the latest to offer fans a 21st Century view of Florida Spring Training. Blue Jays fans can get a bird’s eye view of Toronto pitchers warming up in the bullpen in right field while sitting in an outdoor bar area. If they grow tired of that view, they can stroll across the outfield boardwalk to an air-conditioned indoor food and drink area. Spring training ballparks are also tapping into the team’s history. At CoolToday Park, the Atlanta Braves have numeric monuments dedicated to the 11 retired numbers from Warren Spahn to Chipper Jones. The Braves followed the examples set by the New York Yankees at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa and the Boston Red Sox at Jet Blue Park in Fort Myers. All 13 of the Florida Spring Training ballparks have their own unique aspects, whether it be the team’s history, the host community history or a nod to the culture of the team’s regular season home. Once the month of March passes, nine Florida Spring Training sites host Low A Southeast Minor League teams, with schedules that run through August. For over 100 years, Florida Spring Training welcomes back fans to America’s Pastime, after a long winter’s nap. They flock to the ballparks wearing the colors of their favorite teams. They take their seats, with scorecard in hand, to see new players who have made their way through the Minor League system, or who joined the team over the winter through a trade or a free-agent signing. But what really brings baseball fans together in March at Florida Grapefruit League locations is to hear that familiar crack of the bat and the sound of 90 mile an hour fastball hitting the leather of the catcher’s mitt. Play Ball! For more information about the 2022 Florida Spring Training season, visit www.floridagrapefruitleague.com or follow @FlaSpringTrain on Twitter.

GREAT GOLF AWAITS IN

Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach, long one of Florida’s most popular vacation spots, has continued its emergence as a destination of choice for group leaders in search of great golf and good times off the course. The “World’s Most Famous Beach” strikes the perfect balance between unforgettable golf and the reality that the fun is just beginning when the final putt drops each day.

As the home of nearly 20 courses, including the acclaimed Jones and Hills layouts at LPGA International and a pair of Donald Ross designs, Daytona Beach is a destination capable of meeting the needs of every golf group. The Jones and Hills courses have tested LPGA legends such as Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb, and the South Course at Daytona Beach Golf Club, a Ross layout, once hosted a famed match featuring Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Byron Nelson. While Daytona Beach has deep ties to golf ’s rich history, contemporary layouts like Victoria Hills, an unforgettable Ron Garl design that has been ranked among Florida’s top 20 public courses, and DeBary Golf Club, which has served as a U.S. Open qualifying site, only add to the area’s appeal. STAY-AND-PLAY Make no mistake, Daytona Beach delivers great golf but where a group stays matters, too. Daytona Beach welcomes visitors year-round and the rooms – ranging from oceanfront resorts to familiar national brands to independent boutique properties – that host family beach vacations during the summer months are perfect for golfers throughout the rest of the year.

Daytona Beach provides a number of golf package offerings, which maximize value and convenience, allowing players to customize trips to fit their budget and preferences. THE FUN NEVER STOPS Complementing Daytona Beach’s on-course offerings are a seemingly endless array of activities. From the area’s famed beach to Daytona International

Speedway, deep sea fishing and everything in between, the only thing golfers continually want more of is time. The area’s off-course attractions begin with Daytona International Speedway, where a tour of the track and a visit to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America are a must. The truly ambitious may also want to enjoy the NASCAR Racing Experience, which offers the opportunity to get in a stock car and race around the famed 2.5-mile trioval, 31-degree banked track. After an exhilarating trip to the Speedway, a visit to ONE DAYTONA, the area’s newest dining, shopping and entertainment complex located directly across the street is not to be missed. Baseball fans will relish the opportunity to visit historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark, home of the Daytona Tortugas, a Cincinnati Reds’ affiliate. Of course, no visit is complete without a trip to the “World’s Most Famous Beach.” Daytona Beach enjoys 23 miles of expansive coastline. Some sections are pedestrian only while others allow cars to drive, very slowly, and park on one of the nation’s most stunning beaches. At low tide, the beach is up to 500 feet wide providing ample room for everyone to enjoy the beautiful white sand.

GOOD EATS, ALE TRAIL Daytona Beach is also home to a thriving craft beer scene. Any group in search of a quality, craft brew will enjoy the Daytona Beach Ale Trail, a collection of more than 20 breweries and taprooms that offer a broad selection of craft beer, including outstanding local offerings. Golfers that want to pair a glass of wine with an outstanding meal will appreciate the quality and diversity of Daytona Beach’s wine bars and restaurant offerings, which feature everything from ocean views and fresh seafood to premium steakhouses. Daytona Beach is the rare destination that has the ability to be all things to all people, and golfers have taken notice. For more information on a golf trip, visit www.DaytonaBeach.golf.

Finish With a Flourish: Daytona Beach’s Top 5 18th Holes As you daydream about your next golf trip, here are five of Daytona Beach’s premier finishing holes: 1 With water running along the entire left side, both the tee shot and approach are nervy on the closing hole at LPGA’s Jones Course, a 388-yard (all distances from white tees) par 4.

2 Not to be outdone, the par 4 18th on LPGA’s Hills Course presents an even more significant challenge. The dogleg left plays 374 yards and the tee shot needs to favor the right-center of the fairway, lest players run the risk of having their path to the green blocked by pine trees.

3 DeBary Golf Club’s closing hole is a dogleg right par 4 that plays 401 yards, and a tree-lined fairway demands an accurate drive. The day’s final approach is to a green with sand and water standing guard on the right side, limiting your margin for error.

FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

4 Cypress Head is one of the premier municipal courses in Florida and No. 18, a 466-yard par 5, is one of the reasons why. The narrow fairway is framed by a sprawling waste bunker on the right and mounding on the left. It’s an excellent finish on a course that delivers tremendous value.

5 If you like a dramatic conclusion, the Club at Venetian Bay is calling your name. A 391-yard par 4, the 18th hole features water running from tee to green on the left and the primary landing area in the fairway has bunkers on both sides. Venetian Bay’s 18th demands you be at your best, helping make it one of the area’s most memorable.

FLORIDA

Senior Games The Florida Senior Games, presented by Humana has something for everyone. But there’s one catch. Athletes must be age 50 and over. For those who meet that requirement, yes, there is a sport for everyone. The Florida Senior Games offers sports requiring speed and stamina, like Basketball, Cycling and Track and Field. There are sports utilizing focus and accuracy, like Archery, Bowling, Golf and Horseshoes. If you’ve got good hand/eye coordination, there’s Racquetball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Tennis and Pickleball. If you’re a team player, bring your Basketball, Volleyball or Softball team. One of the myths of the Florida Senior Games is, “Oh, I’m not good enough to be in any sports competition.” That’s ok. The Florida Senior Games community is one of the most supportive and encouraging group of people around. You’ve got to start somewhere and your fellow Senior Games athletes will be there to provide support and advice along the way. Just Bring Your Game. Competition in the Florida Senior Games is a journey from the Local, to State and to National Level events. Beginning in January of every year, a variety of Florida communities offer local qualifiers with sports included in the annual Florida Senior Games and a variety of others. The spring qualifiers are held through April. With Florida’s heat and humidity of May through August, the qualifiers take a break and continue from September through November. The Local Qualifiers are held from Pensacola to Jacksonville to Fort Myers and Miami-Dade County. From January through November, athletes have the opportunity to start their Senior Games journey in one of 21 Florida locations. The 31st Annual Florida Senior Games will be held the first two weekends of December, in a location to be determined. The 2022 Florida Senior Games will be a qualifier for the 2023 National Senior Games, to beheld in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 2023. The 2021 Florida Senior Games, held in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area, featured the usual array of inspiring and motivating stories of athlete achievements. Doug Webster, a cyclist in the 5K and 10K time trials, 75-79 age group, returned to the Games after suffering a heart attack after his 5K time trials race in 2020. His triumphant

return in 2021 earned him a gold medal and a qualification to the 2022 National Senior Games. A total of 15 athlete age 90 and above competed in the 2021 Florida Senior Games, including three golfers. Dick Cheney, of Lakeland, won the gold medal in the 90-94 age group, turning in a 47 in nine holes of play. Only the 90+ athletes play nine holes. Everyone under 90, plays 18. The lowest score of the day, played in an off and on rain, at the Club at Emerald Hills, in Hollywood, was recorded by 81-year old Charles James, who shot a 79. The Club at Emerald Hills has a picturesque view at the 4th tee box with the Hard Rock Hollywood guitar-shaped hotel off in the distance. FLORIDA SENIOR GAMES AT A GLANCE Age Requirement: Athletes must be 50 years old in the year in which they begin competing. Competition is held in age groups of five-year intervals, beginning at 50-54, and advancing to 100 years old.
