LETTER FROM THE EDITOR he talked about how she sees herself running along the beach at 90 or 95 years old. She explained how she realized she would have to take care of her body to ensure she is capable of physically doing that. When she explained this, it was like, ‘I get it now.’ The light bulb went off, and I understood that self-care was at the root of things. Secondly, I realized no one else would ever make me their priority. I say that not with sadness or bitterness but with a maturity that I think only life will bring about. I must be responsible for me. At 38, that might seem like something I should have long ago understood, and I did, but the brevity of it only just hit me. However, it is because I was late grasping it all together in the first place. I spent a great deal of my twenties just knowing someone would come save me from the world. When that did not happen back then, I was bitter. I spent the early part of my thirties overcoming that bitterness, so I have no harsh feelings towards this fact or what I must do. Instead, I focus on how to make this happen. How do I care for myself? How do I make sure I am at my best to continue on?

Francheska “Fancy” Felder

Greetings, It’s been a while, and so much has taken place, but I’m not even sure where to begin. However, I can say it all inspired this issue dedicated to the practice of self-care. I had to learn to be selfish with me for two reasons, and I will share them with you all below.

Self-care is so much more than bubble baths and candles. It’s being aware of how you feel physically, mentally, emotionally and making sure you are finetuned and ready to go, ready to take on whatever life brings in whatever form it may come. It’s charging you up! And when you are not at 100%, it is about getting or doing what you need to get you there, in a positive way of course. It’s about self-preservation. With anything of importance in life, we must take care of it, or else we will ruin it, or it will not last long.

First, as I get closer to 40, I have grasped the fact that my future will be what I make it, and no one is going to work harder to ensure I have the future of my dreams. That meant I had to have some securities in place, so right now, I need to be strategic, and a part of my plan requires the preservation of myself. I had to be honest with myself and realize that things would not go as planned if I did not take better care of myself.

So this is what this season has taught me on top of all the changes I have undergone. It’s been a lot, but throughout it all, I steal little moments to myself to refuel. I would like to say that I have a date set for when I must be done with everything, but who can really say when one season ends and another begins? So, I am listening closely to God and moving with a purpose. I will keep you all posted on how things are going.

This idea partly came to me from something the host of The Great Girlfriends Podcast, Sybil Amuti, said.

With Love, Fancy

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's easy to forget about the one person who deserves our attention and care: ourselves. Self-care is not a luxury; it's fundamental in maintaining overall wellbeing and mental health. Neglecting self-care can have far-reaching consequences to physical health, emotional stability, and even our relationships with others. Self-care is the daily ritual that keeps your body and mind in tip-top shape. Just as you wouldn't skip brushing your teeth to maintain dental health, caring for YOU is critical for your mental and physical well-being. Simple acts like washing your face with nurturing skincare products, leaving your skin radiant and youthful, can work wonders for your mood and confidence. Or applying your favorite lotion and then smelling (deep breathing) your hands for a few moments can help you refocus. Neglecting self-care, particularly your physical health, can lead to life-changing consequences. Consider the sobering example of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Thousands of women each year lose their battles with the disease due to putting off regular check-ups for other responsibilities. Stress, often exacerbated by neglecting self-care, takes a toll on our bodies…leading to a vicious cycle of worsening physical health. Burnout is a common consequence of not prioritizing YOU. It manifests through dull skin, acne breakouts, and hair loss. Mentally, it may result in forgetfulness, insomnia, and mood swings, clear signs that your body and mind are pleading for attention. SwagHer Magazine

Self-care isn't selfish; it's mandatory for maintaining healthy relationships. By prioritizing self-care, you show yourself love and care and have the capacity to love and care for others. You CANNOT pour from an empty (or cracked) cup; neglecting yourself can lead to strained relationships and feeling empty –like the cup. It isn't just about skincare routines; it's finding activities that nourish your soul. Engaging in activities that allow you to be present, like solving puzzles or getting good sleep, significantly enhances your focus and productivity. Emotionally, neglecting self-care can lead to low selfesteem and self-worth, even depression. When you continually put yourself last, your emotional reservoirs run dry, leaving you vulnerable to life’s storms. Self-care is a powerful tool for building resilience and confronting challenges. Whether it's a walk or simply savoring the moment's aromas and sensations of nature, self-care enables you to face adversity confidently. Societal and cultural pressures often discourage selfcare as well, especially among women. The pressure to succeed and be everything for everyone can lead to neglecting oneself for far too long. Recognizing these pressures and purposefully prioritizing self-care is an act of defiance against the status quo. The selfcare journey is personal; what works for one person may not work for another. Embrace a holistic approach to self-care, exploring different activities and rituals until you find what resonates with YOU. 8

Whether it's a quick 5 minutes of silence or a 30minute alignment at the chiropractor, make self-care non-negotiable. One of the simplest and most accessible ways to practice self-care is through skincare. Make your daily routine an experience. Focus on the sensations, aromas, and textures of the products you use. This moment of mindfulness allows your brain to clear itself and embrace the soothing dopamine release. In conclusion, self-care isn't a luxury; it's a necessity for a happy, healthy life. The most important love story in your life should be the one you have with yourself. Nurture yourself and watch as your life blossoms with renewed energy and vitality.

The Black Spa Expo and Black Spa Awards are my legacy!! I have received backlash for serving black spa pros. However, we had no one to serve us, so I did it. These two events have turned into something so magical, and I would do it all over again!! Fancy: Now that you have mastered the spa game, what is something you would have done differently starting? Candace: I would have started with a business coach on day one. I didn’t get a coach until 2015. I was already creative, so my business thrived in year one. Once I got a coach, the game changed for me. I went from $30k months to $100k months!! Fancy: Entrepreneurship often comes with its share of challenges and setbacks. Could you discuss a particularly challenging moment in your journey and how you overcame it, serving as an example of resilience and determination for our readers?

Confidence Is.....

BY: LID’YA C. RIVERA

Let’s talk “confidence.” Confidence is simply defined as ‘having firm trust in yourself, your gifts, and abilities.’ It is the driving force toward success. Confidence is what puts public speakers in front of crowds, lawyers in front of a courtroom, and divorcees back on the dating scene. Confidence is walking in a room with your head held high, even though others may be looking down on you. Quite honestly, how can you crush the spirit of a woman who enters a room demanding respect with a beautiful smile, gracefully embracing her authenticity, and an aura that just can’t be ignored? Confidence is seeing yourself how Christ sees you, even when others pretend you don’t exist—trust me, Sis, they see you. It’s rather difficult to miss such gracefulness and beauty.

SwagHer Magazine

Confidence is doing it afraid. It’s taking risks. It’s trying something new. It’s taking chances. It’s living out loud. It’s boldly conquering. It’s betting on you! Because confidence is found within, it’s important to begin building from the inside out. First, begin to look within and discover who you truly are and start living as that person —the real you. Secondly, once you’ve become so self-aware of who you are, begin to silence the negative self-talk and the negative opinions from others. You had a purpose before they had an opinion, so seek that—your purpose, not validation from others. Finally, begin to speak life into you. Pour into you. Feed what you want to grow. Therefore, feed your mind with positive affirmations each day--even if you don’t immediately believe what you’re saying.

Say it until you believe it, and believe it until you achieve it! So, why is it easy for some women to have a high level of confidence in which they choose to exert themselves, and others can’t seem to find even an ounce of confidence despite their gifts and talents? Studies have shown that it is all about how we think about who we are and our abilities. Even the most outstanding achievers today have worked incredibly hard to get to their desired place, but the keyword is "worked." It does not happen overnight; it takes work. If someone in your life has ever told you that you would never amount to anything, please believe that you can achieve anything you "work" hard to accomplish. If you ever verbally abused yourself by not believing in yourself and your abilities, please forgive yourself for not treating you how you deserve to be treated. Be willing to put in the work. How you think about you and your life depends on you. Your confidence is what you make it. The more you continue to build upon it, the bigger it grows. You are wonderfully and uniquely made, and the qualities you appreciate in others are also within you. Be gentle with yourself and practice loving 15 yourself a little harder. Flex your confidence muscle!

More than exercise. It's a genesis, a new beginning!

Embracing Ease 10 Tips to Practice Living with Grace and Simplicity By Francheska “Fancy” Felder Embracing ease almost seems unattainable in today’s fast-paced world, where stress and anxiety have become commonplace. However, living in ease doesn't mean escaping life's challenges but rather embracing them with grace and simplicity. By making mindful choices and cultivating positive habits, we can gradually transform our lives and experience greater peace and contentment. Still don’t think it’s possible? Here are ten practical tips to practice living in ease.

SwagHer Magazine

17

1. Prioritize Self-Care Start your journey to living with ease by prioritizing self-care. Take time for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul. This might include regular exercise, spending time in nature, practicing meditation or yoga, or indulging in a hobby you enjoy. When you prioritize self-care, you strengthen your resilience and ability to face challenges with a calmer mind.

2.Declutter Your Environment A cluttered physical space can lead to a cluttered mind. Take the time to declutter your home and workspace. Personally, I know when I am off my game when my office starts to look a mess. Let go of items you no longer need or use, and create a serene and organized environment that supports relaxation and focus. An uncluttered space can enhance mental clarity and create a sense of ease in your daily life.

3. Practice Mindfulness Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present at the moment without judgment. Cultivating mindfulness allows you to become more aware of your thoughts and emotions and respond to situations with greater clarity and composure. Mindfulness exercises regularly enhance your ability to live in the present moment and reduce unnecessary worries about the past or future. For mindfulness tips, you may want to follow @iam_daniparks.

4. Embrace a Positive Mindset Cultivate a positive mindset by focusing on gratitude and abundance rather than dwelling on lack and negativity. Train your mind to see the silver linings in challenging situations and practice gratitude daily. A positive outlook can help you navigate life's ups and downs with a sense of ease and optimism. Getting in the habit of positive thinking can be a little challenging at first. I suggest you practice cutting off or stopping negative thoughts midway as they surface.

5. Set Boundaries Learning to set healthy boundaries is essential for living in ease. Understand your limits and prioritize what truly matters to you. Saying "no" when necessary and setting aside time for yourself will prevent overwhelm and create a sense of balance in your life. If you struggle with setting boundaries, I strongly encourage you to read Nedra Glover Tawwab’s book, Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself. You can also ensure you are practicing boundaries and respecting those of others by practicing mindfulness.

6. Simplify Your Schedule A jam-packed schedule can lead to stress and burnout. Simplify your commitments by identifying what's most important to you and letting go of non-essential activities. Prioritize meaningful connections and focus on the quality of your experiences rather than the quantity. Tip for simplifying your work schedule: block off certain days and times for meetings, then incorporate them into your booking link and schedule.

7. Foster Positive Relationships Surround yourself with supportive and positive individuals who lift you up. Nurture your relationships with family and friends and create a strong support network. Engaging in meaningful conversations and shared experiences can greatly contribute to a sense of ease and fulfillment in life.

Implementation of all or a few of these steps will allow you to be freer and have a clear head 8. Practice Deep Breathing and Relaxation which in turn gives way to more creativity and productivity and a better mood. When you encounter stressful situations, practice deep breathing and relaxation techniques. These simple practices can activate the body's relaxation response and help you approach challenges with a calmer demeanor.

Implementation of all or a few of these steps will allow you to be freer and have a clear head 9. Embrace Imperfection which in turn gives way to more creativity and productivity and a better mood. Accept that life is imperfect, and so are we. Embrace imperfection as a natural part of the human experience. Rather than striving for perfection, focus on progress and growth. Allow room for mistakes and learn from them without being overly critical of yourself.

Implementation of all or a few of these steps will allow you to be freer and have a clear head 10. Engage in Joyful Activities which in turn gives way to more creativity and productivity and a better mood. Make time for activities that bring you joy and laughter. Whether dancing, singing, painting, or playing with pets, engaging in activities that make your heart sing can elevate your mood and create a sense of ease in your life.

Living in ease is not about avoiding challenges or pretending that life is always smooth sailing. Journey From Reality TV to Music and Entrepreneurship–

A Conversation on Self-Care and Success By: Khadijah Phillips

I had the pleasure of speaking with the phenomenal, multi-talented reality TV star Melody Shari as she opened up about her dynamic career, her commitment to selfcare, and the various projects that have kept her thriving in the entertainment and business world. Known for her appearances on shows like Love and Marriage Huntsville, Melody's

A Woman Of Many Hats Melody's career is a remarkable testimony to the resilience of women everywhere. She's ventured into diverse fields–from business and real estate to television, film, fashion, and skincare. When asked about her ability to juggle so many different roles, she attributes it to her work ethic and time management. “I start my days very early, and usually, my days are very long. I literally try to utilize every second of the day. I went through a phase where I would wake up the next day and be like, 'Oh, man, if I had stayed up one more hour, I could've gotten this done,' or 'If I had gotten up one hour earlier, I could have accomplished this.' I don't like that feeling. I'm always working to get stuff done. I multitask a lot. Multitasking is huge for me. Usually, my mind is multitasking, and my body and hands are multitasking. That's how I move and shake. Honestly, anything

worth having–you know what I'm saying–is worth working hard for; if it were easy, everybody would be doing it."

Melody On Self-Care Despite her busy schedule, Melody emphasizes the importance of self-care. She believes that one must make time for self-care, even on the busiest of days. How does she find the time to get it all done? "Oh, I'll make it fit! With everything that you have to do on a daily basis, it would seem like there's no time for self-care. I feel like self-care is something you have to make time for. It's funny you're asking me that. So, for example, last night, I got a massage starting at 10:30p.m. My massage therapist came here [to

7th Avenue Beauty "My skincare line originated from a personal experience in 2018," Melody shared. It all started when I was diagnosed with a skin condition called pityriasis rosacea. It came out of nowhere, even during my childhood. My greatgrandmother shared with me this secret recipe to help combat those pesky breakouts." She continued, "I incorporated her wisdom into 7th Avenue, and I also teamed up with an incredible Black female chemist who has more than 18 years of experience. We combined my grandmother's teachings with her expertise, and that's how we came together to

Our mission is twofold. First, we want women all over the world to recognize the significance of maintaining healthy and wellcared-for skin." Melody emphasized, "Second, we are committed to ensuring that quality skincare is affordable. Every woman deserves access to top-notch products for their skin, and we firmly believe that this isn't an area where one should have to compromise. So, we've put in the hard work to make our products budget-friendly. I'm always running promotions, so you'll find our products on sale regularly.

Her skincare line caters to busy women who need effective and efficient skincare routines. She believes that taking care of your skin should not be a time-consuming process. Her products are designed for multitasking and to yield quick 23 results.

"You can be picking out your work outfit for tomorrow or folding clothes while doing your skincare. That goes back to the multitasking piece. A skincare routine is self-care in and of itself." The beautypreneur also adds, "I also have a milk bath that's part of my skincare routine. And when I first came out with it, I would tell [my patrons] to simply sit in the tub and relax and woo. 'Ladies, light your candles. Put this milk bath in your tub to moisturize your skin and make you feel super soft and silky. Take some time for you.' And so my milk bath goes back to that whole self-care piece."

Moving On After Divorce Melody's journey has had its share of challenges, including a highly publicized divorce. However, she found strength in rebuilding herself and her career. She encourages others to prioritize self-growth and, when necessary, let go of relationships or situations that drain. "Sometimes you have to cut relationships. You have to get to that place where you do not care what anybody thinks about your decision if that's the decision you know you need to make for yourself."

Relationships Collaborations

And

Speaking of relationships, the Love and Marriage Huntsville star’s most recent collaboration has been with celebrity stylist J. Bolin. “So, I have been blessed to work with the amazing celebrity stylist, J. Bolin. Every time we drop a collection, there's always meaning behind it, right? We always want it to be more than just putting on clothes and showing the ladies what they can look like or what they can wear or what pieces go well together. We want to make sure that it represents the story. And notice in the collection you see yellow. So, of course, I had my Lemon Drop collection coming. It represented the continuation of my skincare line. On top of that, I have literally turned lemons into SwagHer Magazine

lemonade. I've turned something sour into something sweet. And, like I said, when we come together and work to create pieces for women from all across the world, we try to make sure that it represents where I am at that moment in life.” As if that's not impressive enough, Melody is also a recording artist with exciting new music on the horizon. She debuted her first album, "TellTale Signs," in 2021, and she has continued to release more music to expand her already remarkable portfolio.

Throughout the interview, Melody's message of empowerment and resilience shined through. She aims to inspire women to pursue their dreams and not let anything deter them. Her story of turning lemons into lemonade–both in her skincare line and in life– serves as a testament to her determination. "I want people to be inspired when they wake up, and they see me posting... It's not about a flex for me. It's about inspiration." Moving Forward As for what's on the horizon, Melody has no plans to slow down. She continues to expand her businesses, create music, participate in fashion events like Paris Fashion Week, and work on new entertainment and media projects. She's also actively involved in teaching and mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs.

TASHA LYONS BY: FRANCHESKA “FANCY” FELDER

EVERYTHING HAS A PURPOSE

You may know Tasha Lyons from her work on Bravo's The Real Housewives of Potomac as a hairstylist to TV personality Monique Samuels, but Tasha can also be credited with contributions to editorial publications, other celebrity clients, fashion shows, and a host of other events showcasing her talent. Tasha also owned and operated her salon Taja'Ly Studio of Hair. Born in Capitol Heights, Maryland, Tasha graduated in 2000 from Bladensburg High School. She ventured into the real estate arena in 2015 and became a top-producing agent after one year in the industry. She formed her own real estate team in 2019, The Lyons Den Group of EXIT Community Realty. This team now comprises her husband, Neil Lyons, and daughter JaNeil Lyons. They assist families all over the DMV with their real estate needs. Tasha made her debut on the big screen in 2022 as a cast member on the reality TV show Love and Marriage: DC on the OWN Network. Since that show, her love for modeling and acting has emerged. She's been featured in TV series and short films and is excited to expand her acting roles into feature films. What first caught my attention was Tasha’s daring looks and style on Instagram. We’re talking reality TV, Love & Marriage D.C., and real estate below. Dig in!

Dig in! Fancy: What was the process like for being cast on Love & Marriage: D.C.? Tasha: So, first of all, going back to The Real Housewives of Potomac, I was doing the hair for Monique Samuels. I was one of her hairstylists, her main one. That's how I got to know Monique. Our friendship stemmed from that, from me doing her hair for the show. She called me one day, and she was like, “What do you feel about being on a reality TV show? My initial thought was I don't know because that's not something that I ever set out to do. Reality TV? No. So I said it just depends on what kind of show it is, the nature of the show, what it is promoting, and what it is because I don't do all the catty stuff. That's not me. And so she told me, Love & Marriage: D.C., like Love and Marriage Huntsville. They're bringing it to D.C. I'm like, okay, cool, because I'm familiar with Love and Marriage Huntsville. SwagHer Magazine

I've seen how they promoted businesses, Black excellence, and marriages. I'm like, that's something that I would love to be a part of. Neil, my husband, was down for it. We did an interview with Carlos King, and no, we did an interview with someone else first. I guess they liked what they saw, and they asked us, did we want to be friends of the show. And that's how it happened.

It's a lot of things that play on your mind. When you're filming a reality TV show, you're thinking, “Okay, if I say this, then the viewers are going to think that, or they are going to think this.” I think when you have that kind of mentality, you go into reality TV trying to be something that you're not, or you're trying to please everybody before it even comes out. I just wanted to stay true to who I was as Tasha.

Fancy: Cool. So you were conscious of how you were portrayed on the show. I know people often talk about how they were portrayed after the fact. Was there anything that you tried to be mindful of throughout the filming process?

Fancy: So, now, switching gears. You were a cosmetologist, and then you went into real estate. What was that pivot like for you?

Tasha: Absolutely! It's like a million things going through your mind while filming. I did want to stay true to myself. I did not want to be anything other than authentically Tasha. I think that was kind of my downfall. Well, I'm not going to say my downfall. That was why I wasn't shown a lot, I believe, because I was the voice of reasoning. I told people when I thought that they were wrong, or I had conversations with a lot of the cast members. I even got into a conflict with one of the other cast members. They didn't show that. I just wanted to stay true to myself and to who I was still being me. Still, I'm not a raw catty type of person, but if drama comes to me, then I'm going to give it back. But I'm not going to just be raw just for cameras. Know what I'm saying?

Tasha: It was crazy because real estate was nothing that was on my radar. Same as reality TV. Some of these things, like in my life's journey, kind of just fell into certain things. With real estate, I had a girlfriend who was in real estate, and she was a realtor. She was phenomenal in the business. Another young lady and I were helping her with her business and were helping her so much to the point where she was just like, “You all should get your licenses.” I'm like, “Okay, I'll try it out.” Took the course, took the test, passed it, and got my license. I'm nosey going into houses and seeing what it's all about. I like seeing the different architectural aspects and the characteristics of homes and stuff like that. I was always intrigued by going into homes. I don't know, it became a passion of mine. It's like my eighth year now. Along the way, like my first year, I 30

I was a top producer after my second year. With that, I formed my real estate team, The Lyons Group. At first, I had other members in my group, but that really didn't work out. I told my husband and my daughter, you guys are helping me anyway. When it comes to real estate, they hear the lingo that I'm speaking, they hear me doing day-to-day real estate business, and so they were helping me out. The same thing as the young lady had asked us, I asked them. “Why don't you get your license?” So that's what they did. My daughter got her license at like 19. She didn't know what she really wanted to do after school. She's very creative, and she's very all over the place. I told her when you get out of school, you have to have some type of direction. It was kind of up in the air. I said, “Well, get your license. At least, you'll have that to fall back on.” I advocate for trades and taking them up in high school or at least having a trade coming out of high school. That was my cosmetology- I took that up in high school. From my experience, that's something that you should have coming out. So I told her to get her license. She took the test. Got her license after 13 tries. Poor child- it’s a hard test. But she got it, and then my husband got his license. So that's what we're doing. We are a family business, doing real estate together and helping families build wealth through real estate.

Fancy: What is the housing market like in general and in D.C.

especially? You see so much in the news, but I know you're actually out there, so what's going on. Tasha: Yeah, right now, the market is kind of stabilizing. A year or two ago, we saw crazy numbers regarding the housing market and sellers. It was definitely a seller's market, and people were paying well over market value for houses. Now houses are typically sitting on the market longer. We're not in a rat race. Buyers have the upper hand when it comes to negotiating prices and getting closing help from sellers. The only difference is the interest rates are higher than they were before. I always tell buyers, don't let that scare you because the interest rates that we're seeing now, like, everybody's saying, “Oh, the interest rates are so high!” These are normal interest

rates. We were just spoiled after getting the lower interest rates. That was abnormal. The rates that we're seeing now are normal rates. I just feel like you'll never have that perfect market when people ask, “Well, is this a good time to buy it?” It's never going to be perfect. It's either going to be high-interest rates with low prices of homes or vice versa. It's never going to be that perfect time. I just feel like if you're in a situation where you want to purchase, then purchase. There are ways that we can get you closing help. There are ways and programs out. There's just so much that goes into real estate and buying a home that I just feel like buyers need to be educated on. That's why we're here, to educate buyers on which 2 route to go when it 31 comes to purchasing.

31

Fancy: I understand. Why are you so passionate about helping first-time home buyers? Tasha: Oh, my God. I love it because, like I just said, I love the education part of it. Once I finish with my first-time home buyers, I want them to feel like they can do this a million times or they can get their real estate license because I like to educate them on why they're doing something. Yeah, you want to purchase a home, but why do you want one? Why are we doing this? Why are we going this route? What is the EMD (Earnest Money Deposit)? I'm not just going to say you need an EMD to put in your offer letter. What is the EMD? I want to explain everything to them because building wealth through real estate is the number one way of gaining wealth. First-time home buyers have this misconception that they have to have all this money in the bank, they have to take a note, and credit. It's just a lot of myths. Many people say, “I don't think I can do it. That's not something that I can achieve.” I'm very passionate about letting them know, yes, you can. I can't afford a mortgage. Yes, you can. You are paying somebody else's mortgage right now while you're renting. You're paying a mortgage, but you're just not paying your own. Don't say that you can't because you are. You're most definitely doing it. You're even paying mortgages while you're renting an apartment. With those prices of

apartments, you can own a home. I'm just very passionate about letting them know, yes, you can. With those prices of apartments, you can own a home. I'm just very passionate about that. I love first-time home buyers. That's just my thing.

need to do in order to purchase.” Not just send them on their way with just, “Okay, you're not ready right now.” Let's put a plan in place to get you to where you need to be able to purchase. I would say that my number one tip is to just figure out where it is that you stand at the moment so we can get you okay.

Fancy: That brings me to my next question because I was going to ask you to share two tips for those who might be pursuing a home purchase this year. Tasha: I would be happy to do that! Absolutely. The number one thing is to check and go with a realtor who has your best interest at heart. Often, realtors only like working with people who are ready to buy. I'm the type of realtor who, if you're not ready, will get you there. Let's see where you stand. That's the number one tip, which is to see where you stand. If you feel like you want to purchase a home, then see where you stand. Go to a realtor, and have them point you in the direction of a great loan officer who can pull your credit, see your income, and let you know, “Well, based on your income and based off of your credit score, you are in a position to purchase,” or if you're not, “These are the things that you

32

Fancy: This is going to be good for our viewers. You've been making a lot of moves since you entered the reality TV world. What other ventures can you discuss? Do you have any other projects or anything in the works?

Tasha: I do. It's so crazy because, like I said before, I didn't set out to do reality TV. It's like once I got used to the cameras in my face, I was like, “I can get used to this. I like this.” I used to take up theater and drama back in school, so it kind of awakened that passion again for that. I went into acting. I did some background acting. I started in September. It's so crazy because everything is just like flowing. It's crazy! I did some background work for a TV series called Swagger. I just finished one up called Lioness, that's with Zoe Saldana. I also did some commercials. Mind you, this has been since September, and this is without any agent or representation. This has just been on my own. Which I am just extremely excited about. I just got a supporting role for a TV show series for a pilot. We filmed that in Philly. I was super excited. I actually have lines now, background work. I started my acting classes, and I’m excited about that journey. That's why I say everything happens for a reason. Me and my husband did not get asked back for another season of Love & Marriage DC, which is fine, I'm cool with that.

I do believe things happen for a reason. I was on that platform for a reason. It was a stepping stone in my journey to go in another direction. So I'm grateful for that opportunity. I'm grateful for the people that I met on the show because we're really cool friends now. I didn't know them before, so life's journey is just crazy. You never know what doors will open up. You never know what doors close and the reason why they close. I'm a very firm believer that things happen for a reason. I'm just grateful for my journey and grateful for the opportunities that are happening and are on their way.

Self -Care

& Its Origins In The Black Community By Khadijah Philliips

The other day, at the recommendation of a friend, I tuned in to a thought-provoking episode of the Balanced Black Girl Podcast. The topic was "The History of Self-Care: A Revolutionary Act," featuring the host of the That Wasn't In My Textbook Podcast. This engaging discussion motivated me to look into the origins of self-care and the reasons behind its increasing popularity. INC magazine values the self-care industry at a staggering 1.5 trillion dollars – yes, you heard that right, a 1.5 trillion-dollar industry. Selfcare encompasses everything from relaxation techniques and wellness retreats to spa days. But it's more than that; it's a philosophy that involves setting oneself up for success and embracing only those practices that foster growth in every area of life. Many may not realize that the concept of self-care has a rich history within our community, extending far beyond what we consider it to mean. To understand the significance of self-care in the Black community, it is essential to look at the history and how it has become so popular in our communities. Throughout American history, we have faced systemic racism, discrimination, and violence. From the era of slavery to the civil rights movement, the Black community has had to develop resilience and survival strategies to cope with oppression's physical, emotional, and psychological toll.

SwagHer Magazine

Self-care is not a new concept; African cultures have a rich history of holistic healing practices, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. These traditions were brought to America during the slave trade and formed the basis for early forms of self-care. During slavery, Africans relied on their cultural knowledge to practice self-care secretly. This included herbal medicine, spiritual rituals, and communal support systems. These practices served as a form of resistance and resilience in the face of hardships and enslavement. The Black Panthers, founded in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, emerged during a turbulent period in American history when racial tensions were at their peak. The organization was initially focused on addressing police brutality and advocating for civil rights, but it quickly expanded its agenda to address the community's broader needs. One of the most notable contributions of the Black Panthers to the concept of self-care was the establishment of the Black Panther Party's Free Breakfast for Children Program. This program provided free breakfast to thousands of Black children before school, recognizing the importance of nutrition and education in the well-being of the community. he program not only addressed a practical need but also was another form of self-care by nurturing the physical and mental development of the children.

35

Additionally, the Black Panthers initiated healthcare clinics, such as the People's Free Medical Centers, which offered healthcare services to underserved Black communities. These clinics emphasized preventive care, community wellness, and empowerment. The Panthers also promoted mental and emotional self-care by creating safe spaces for open dialogue and self-expression through their Free Intercommunal News Service and Black Panther newspaper. They encouraged those in the communities to challenge the false narratives they had been taught about themselves and to engage in self-reflection, which was critical to those in the community. The legacy of the Black Panthers' approach to self-care endures today. Their emphasis on community empowerment, holistic health, and cultural pride has influenced generations of Black activists and individuals seeking to improve their well-being. The Black Panthers demonstrated that self-care goes beyond personal pampering; it encompasses collective efforts to address systemic issues and create a nurturing environment for our communities. The self-care movement continues to evolve, incorporating ancestral wisdom, cultural reconnection, and community-building elements. The legacy of the Black Panthers serves as a reminder that self-care is not a luxury but a vital tool for resilience, healing, and empowerment. The history of self-care in the Black community is deeply intertwined with the struggle for civil rights and the fight against systemic oppression. The Black Panthers, through their innovative programs and holistic approach to community well-being, played a pivotal role in shaping the concept of self-care for Black Americans. Their legacy inspires a new generation to prioritize selfcare as a means of resistance, healing, and empowerment in the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice.

This One-Day Retreat Allows Black Women to Explore Wellness By: Francheska “Fancy” Felder When was the last time that you simply just “be”? Last month, I attended the Queen B.E.E. Talks Retreat presented by It Takes a Village Collaborative, or ITAVCollab, hosted at the beautiful Wellspring Manor & Spa in Upper Marlboro. The one-day retreat was a great opportunity for Black women in the area to explore new wellness practices like sound healing, deep stretch yoga, breath work, and chakra healing dance. Founded by the two sisters, Shoareged Phillpotts and Aisha Phillpotts-Manley, ITAV’s mission is to cultivate thriving communities of color that focus on a holistic approach to wellness, including the mind, body, and spirit, in order to encourage individuals and families to heal, prioritize wellness, and reach their fullest potential. Set in the upstairs art gallery of the manor, the morning started with sound healing with Ma’Sheka Amina as she helped the women set their intentions for the event with deep breaths surrounded by vibrant Black art. They could then choose which body session they wanted to attend. I chose the chakra healing dance with dance and yoga instructor Shaiday Dancy. Because I did not come dressed for the occasion, I did not participate, but I really longed to. I took mental notes as the women moved to and fro freely, inviting movements and opening their chakras one by one. After lunch, they hosted the mind and spirit sessions, followed by a release circle and a celebratory toast. Other practitioners who led workshops during the event were Lauren Boone of Love Well Ministries, certified yoga instructor Jessica Nicholas, Fatmata Fadika-Zulu, founder of Wake Up and Dream, yoga instructor Dana Washington, and holistic health practitioner Pamela Reynolds. This is the fourth Queen B.E.E. Talks Retreat that ITAVCollab has hosted. To learn more about them, visit https://www.itavcollab.org.
