Biochemist

Overview

A biochemist is someone who studies chemical processes or the change in chemicals when they are a living organism. Important traits for a biochemist include verbal communication and writing skills to construct research papers, problem solving and critical thinking skills to create and execute experiments and to understand and interpret the results. Biochemists are often required to: "Prepare samples and perform analyses using various analytical techniques", "Maintain electronic lab notebooks, interpret results, and communicate findings both orally and in wellwritten technical reports" and "Perform independent research and develop new analytical methods with the support of senior staff".

Education Classes in natural and physical sciences are useful in high school to prepare the student for college major in biochemistry. Knowledge of math and computer science is useful as well because they help in learning how to analyze data. Biochemists typically have a bachelor's degrees either biochemistry or a related field such as biology, chemistry, physics or engineering. Classes in mathematics are also important as biochemists need to analyze a variety of complex data.

Work

in 2014, the median annual salary for a biochemist was $84,940. The majority of biochemists work in professional scientific and technical services industry. The remainder were in manufacturing or education. These jobs are typically found in colleges, universities, hospitals and pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies.

Biochemists who decide to pursue a master's degree usually spend a full year doing so. This involves specializing in a specific area of research. The usual areas are molecular biology, bioinformatics, statistics, and biophysics. A Ph.D, is optional but recommended as if you want a research or development job. Very few jobs accept only a bachelor's degree. A few people are able to get a laboratory job with only a master 's degree. A Ph.D. usually takes 3 to 4 years of training. Lab work can be done throughout college and is usually during school or an internship. This involves creating, designing, and completing a lab to find results that may help.

Reflection According to The Holland Code, this occupation is investigative, artistic, and realistic. Investigative refers to the analytical side of this occupation, requiring deeper thinking and observation. Biochemistry needs someone who is artistic as well because they will be creating experiments and chemicals. Finally biochemistry is realistic, meaning that all the tasks that are required are concrete.

IT'S TIME FOR

SELF REFLECTION I'll admit that I did not know that it's difficult to become a dentist. I was not aware of the special testing and specific schooling that it took to become a dentist. It seems very rigorous to me, more than I thought. It seems like if somebody wants to become a dentist, they have to be all in or else forget about it. It's that fact that deters me away from being a dentist. That, and I'm not a big fan of teeth. They're pretty creepy in my opinion. I think have the patience and dexterity to become a dentist, but I could never apply myself to it.

AUTHENTIC ITALIAN

Dietitian EST. 2014

Dietitians are responsible for managing the diets of individual clients or of a group of people, such as a student body or a company. Some dietitians work out of an office developing diet plans, whereas others may work in the kitchen, overseeing food production. A dietitian should be knowledgeable in the field of nutrition and how it relates to anatomy and physiology. They should be able to determine the Add a little bit of body text nutritional cause of a disorder based on a professional diagnosis and correct the issue.

Entrees

Education & Training......................................9 A bachelors or a masters degree in nutrition or dietetics is recommended for this career. Most nutritionists spend four to five years in school.

Work..................................................................11 Dieticians earn an average of $63,700 per year. Some dieticians run their own practices as dietary consultants for individual clients, while others are employed by companies and schools to ensure proper nutrition throughout their respective groups. Though some dietician work supervising kitchen staff or otherwise on-site, many others work out of a home or personal office. Most dieticians are employed at the local level, but state and national governments do hire dieticians as public health professionals.

Reflection........................................................7 A person with a passion for healthy living and helping others achieve a healthy lifestyle would thrive in this work environment. As someone who is interested in health and knows a reasonable amount about nutrition, I think that this career would be a decent fit for me, and I'm still interested in it. The best part of this career would probably be helping people realize that they can become significantly healthier through non-invasive treatments and simple lifestyle changes.

Excercise Physiologist

Marco Gaspar

Exercise physioligist might be confused at times with athletic training. Because they're pretty similar in what they both do. The difference is the exercise physiologist us physical exercise to help physically hurt peole. Also to help athletes maintain, and or better there sport performance. The enviroment in this field usually around a gym, field, or court, you don't at ,most times have an office. To qualify for this job field all you need is a bachelors degree in sports science, or something related to it. Also the competition to get this job has beem incresing even though theres more jobs opening up. There also more people graduating for thisd position more and more every year.

Forensic Toxicologist By Sean McIntyre

Overview Forensictoxicologists are scientists are part of a crime scene investigation team who preform tests on the body fluids and tissue samples in order to identify any drugs or chemicals in the body. It also involves seeing how these factors affect the human body.

Education and Training You must have a bachelor's degree in chemistry, clinical chemistry, pharmacology, or another scientific feild. Aim for a master's in forensic science. Many universities and medical schools offer degrees in toxicology, but few colleges do. Some schools that offer degrees are Western Washington University and University of Washington.

Work Salary: $34,527 $64,578 per year. However, your salary can increase along with your years of experience. Some toxicologist make $200,000 per year. Employer(s): Wildlife criminal investigators, law enforcement agencies. Workplace: Laboratories run by law enforcement agencies. Career Opportunities: The majority of government and industry jobs (including toxicology) are located in the eastern part of the U.S.A. However, there are 167 jobs in the north west. There are a few opportunities within Washington state .

Works Cited "Becoming a Toxicologist." Society of Toxicology. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 May 2016. "ExploreHealthCareers.org." Forensic Toxicologist. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 May 2016. "WOIS Enter Site Key." WOIS Enter Site Key. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 May 2016.

Reflection To excel in a career of toxicology, one needs to have a insert or passion in molecular technology. I feel that I wold be decent in the field of toxicology because I am already pursuing another field in biology (marine biology). The change of careers wouldn't be as dramatic as if, for example, I was pursuing a career in music. However, I have already set my goal to get a master's in marine biology and become a marine biologist since the age of seven. But if that doesn't work out well, I might find myself perusing a career in toxicology, mainly because I would be able to help protect public health and public safety while also being able to work in molecular biology. Also, the fact that your salary increases with your years of experience is tempting.

The Medical Assistant Hannah Cross Overview In a typical day the Medical Assistant performs administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Just to name a few. Clinical duties may include drawing blood, preparing patients for examinations, etc. In order to perform the job you must have had several years of vocational training and must pass a licensing exam. Working conditions include: welllighted, clean environments, constant interaction with patients and people, and a 40 hour week, if working fulltime. Others just work part time, evenings or weekends. Education & training Education Pathway/Licensing Requirements: Most occupations in this field require training in a vocational school, related onthe job experience, or an associate's degree. Some may require a bachelor's degree.

Work Employer: Medical assistants provide clerical and clinical support to physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Salary: While working in one of these positions an annual salary will be something close to $30,550. Workplace: Primary Care Facilities, Medical Labs, Chiropractor's Office, Retirement Communities, etc. Career Opportunities: locally local clinics and doctors offices, (pediatrician's office, etc.) nationally/ internationally work alongside other doctors and MA's to better patient care. Some MA's assist in labs where they help discover new treatments and cures.

Reflection Anyone who loves to help others and wants to be more focused on patient care would excel in this job. I'd day I'd be a good candidate for this job because I enjoy talking to and helping people, which is what this job requires. You need to be able to talk to patients as well as have a responsible work ethic, which I strive to have. I'm not as interested in this job occupation as I was because the annual salary is lower than what I would like to make in the future. It would be a fun job and I would enjoy it, but I think I could find another job in the medical field that I enjoy just as much and that makes more. I think the best part of this job would be that you mostly get to focus solely on patient care, whereas with surgeons they don't really get to focus on one patient, they have to focus on multiple and it often would turn into just getting the job done and not really caring to get to know the patient.

Psychiatry (səkī′ətrē, sī–), branch of medicine that concerns the diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, including major depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety. Psychiatrists prescribe, direct, or administer psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders. To be effective at counseling patients, psychiatrists need strong communication skills. They should be knowledgeable about psychology and sociology, which help them identify behavioral patterns.

Psychiatrists help patients with mental illnesses such as substance abuse, anxiety disorders, or depression. Some mental illnesses have a biological cause, such as a lack of the proper chemicals in the brain. Other mental illnesses are caused by an event, such as the death of a loved one. They often employ individual or group therapy to gain insight into a patient's past and find coping methods to help patients address their own problems. Some cases may require medications or hospitalization. Psychiatrists who work with hospitalized patients collaborate with other professionals to design treatment plans and monitor progress. Typically, it takes about 8 years of post undergraduate study to become a boardcertified psychiatrist – 4 years to complete your M.D. degree plus another 4 years of residency. If you include the time it takes to earn a bachelor’s degree, it takes at least 12 years of school and training to become a psychiatrist. The average annual salary for a psychiatrist in the US is $163,660. Those who were employed in the offices of physicians had an average salary of $154,650 per year. Those employed in outpatient care centers made an average of $190,340 per year.

Who would excel at this job? People who are hardworking, creative, observative, and detail oriented would excel at this job. Becoming a surgeon takes time and a lot of work so anyone who becomes a surgeon has to really want it and put 110% into it. Though surgeons make large salaries, it takes many years before you actually start making money so people that would excel at this job aren't money oriented but dedicated to the job itself. Being a surgeon also requires the person to be able to think on the spot and work under high pressure so they must be patient, calm, and focused.

Am I a good candidate? I believe that I would be a good candidate. Becoming a surgeon has been a dream of mine for many years now so I am willing to put in the time and effort. I also am detail oriented, and can think on the spot to think of solutions if I need to. But mainly, I love to help people. Are you still interested in this career? Yes I am because it is something that I am really passionate about. I was also already aware that I would have to go to school for a really long time which is one of the bigger drawbacks because of the debt.

What do you think is the best part of this career? I think the best part of this career is the gratification of being able to help people.
