Athletic Trainer

Duties Apply protective or injurypreventive devices, such as tape, bandages, and braces Recognize and evaluate injuries provide first aid or emergency care Develop and carry out rehabilitation programs for injured athletes Plan and implement comprehensive programs to prevent injuries and illness among athletes Preform administrative tasks, such as keeping records and writing reports on injuries and treatment programs Work in educational environments such as colleges, universities, elementary and secondary schools, also in hospitals and professional sports teams Skills: Compassion: Athletic trainers work with athletes and patients who may be in considerable pain or discomfort. The trainer must be sympathetic while providing treatment Decision Making skills: Athletic trainers must be able to make informed clinical decision that could affect the health or livelihood of patients Detail oriented: Athletic trainers must record patients’ progress accurately and ensure that they are receiving the appropriate treatments or practicing the correct fitness regimen Interpersonal skills: Athletic trainers must have strong interpersonal skills in order to manage difficult situations. They must communicate well with others, including physicians, patients, athletes, coaches, and parents

Work: Many athletic trainers work in educational settings, such as colleges, universities, elementary schools, and secondary schools. Others work in hospitals, fitness centers, or physicians’ offices, or for professional sports teams. Some athletic trainers work with military, with law enforcement, or with performing artists. The median pay 44,670 and can get up to 47,540. Employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow 21 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. As people become more aware of sportsrelated injuries at a young age, demand for athletic trainers is expected to increase. Recent research reveals that the effects of concussions are particularly severe and long lasting for child athletes. Although concussions are dangerous at any age, children’s brains are still developing and are at risk for permanent complications. Some states require public secondary schools to employ athletic trainers as part of their sports programs. Because athletic trainers are usually onsite with athletes and are often the first responders when injuries occur, the demand for trainers in schools should continue to increase. In addition, advances and more sophisticated treatments in injury prevention and detection are projected to increase the demand for athletic trainers. Growth in an increasingly active middleaged and elderly population will likely lead to an increased incidence of athletic related injuries, such as sprains. Sports programs at all ages and for all experience levels will continue to create demand for athletic trainers. Insurance and workers’ compensation costs have become a concern for many employers and insurance companies, especially in areas where employees are often injured on the job. For example, military bases hire athletic trainers to help train and rehabilitate injured military personnel. These trainers also create programs aimed at keeping injury rates down. Depending on the state, some insurance companies recognize athletic trainers as healthcare providers and reimburse the cost of an athletic trainer’s services. Reflection: People who would excel at this job are people who like to work with other people and who like sports, play sports, or who have played sports in any level especially that of professional levels. I am a good candidate because I like to play sports and working with athletes would be a good way to learn a sport better. The best part of this career is that you have a chance to be a trainer on a professional team and work with professional athletes and help teach them. c i r t e a s i r d u e N P y g o l o c n O

Overview: Pediatric Oncology Nurses work with youth, up to 21 years of age, in the cancer wing of the hospital (Day in the Life). Best Fit: An emotionally stable, yet sympathetic person who is good with kids would excel at this job. A pediatric oncology nurse needs to work with terminallyill children and help comfort their grieving families. Being organized is also extremely important. The nurse is in charge of being up to date with the patient's treatment plan and observing their progress. Being optimistic and patient also would help with the job. Not all remediation tactics work and a frustrated, skeptic nurse won't help the child.

College & Beyond Typical Day:These types of nurses should expect to work in small groups and keep a treatment schedule for patients, educate them and their families on the disease, and provide personal care to physically incapable children, all while monitoring patients in recovery. (Day in the Life) Education and Training: Pediatric Oncology Nurses must pass the Nursing Program which can take up to 4 years at a university or as short as 2 years in an accelerated program. An Intership after completing school is not required before applying for a job (Do I have to complete and Internship). Nurses also have to pass the NCLEX RN exam to be licensed (US Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Work: Nurses in general, especially this kind, can work in a variety of setting. They can work in the a hospital's surgery or cancer wing, a children's hospital, a patient's home if working for a private practice, a nursing school, or clinic (Antle). Local work locations include Island Hospital, Seattle Children's center, or the Seattle Care Cancer Alliance. The median salary is $50,702, but the salary can range from $35,000 to $125,000. A nurse practitioner earns a median of $77,782 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics). There are also some opportunities with Cross Country TravCorps to travel around the nation and work long days at multiple hospitals for an average of 13 to 15 weeks (PEDONC). There are not too many international opportunities, but there are some job opportunities in Saudi Arabia that allow a US registered nurse and pay around $110,000 a year (Khan). Self Evaluation: I don't think this job would be best suited for me. I don't think that I would be able to watch many of my young patients die and know that I couldn't do anything to prevent it. One aspect, however, that I do like about the career is its proximity to kids. I also like the variety of work environments and the salary promototions that are available in the field. Pharmacists most often work in pharmacies, which can be located at drug stores and grocery stores as well as hospitals and clinics. A typical day for a Pharmacist will include; filling prescriptions and giving them out, keeping records of the medications, communicating with insurance companies and if the season is right they will give flu shots and other vaccines. Education and Training: Becoming a pharmacist does require a lot of training and education. You must have a doctorate degree in pharmacy, as well as a postgraduate professional degree. Work: From 2014 to 2024 the rate of hiring is projected to grow 3%. Mainly because the huge babyboom generation is aging and will need more medication because of it. Hospitals and Clinics will be hiring pharmacists. Pharmacists generally make a rate of $58.41 per hour, and a yearly pay of 121,000. Depending on where the pharmacist is employed they may make a small amount more or less per year. Reflection: I think that a pharmacist would be an interesting job. Personally I think that I would be alright at it because I can focus on things and complete tedious tasks when interested. Also part of being a pharmacist is being good with people, for instance when you have to talk to your patients and advise them on what medication they use. Works Cited: "Summary."
