Pediatric Nurse

Overview

Nurses who specialize in pediatrics devote their knowledge and skills to caring for children from infancy through the late teen years and their families. Pediatric nurses can perform physical examinations, measure vital statistics, take blood and urine samples and order diagnostic tests. Parents often prefer to have their children treated by nurses and other health providers who are pediatric specialists, because children have special health care needs. Their bodies are growing and changing, and they often react differently to injury, illness and even common medications. Also children get scared and can’t always clearly communicate “what hurts.” Pediatric nurses know how to talk to children and how to dispel their fears. They also know how to ask children questions about their health, so they can gather complete and accurate information to aid in diagnosis and treatment. In addition, prevention and health is big part of pediatric nursing. Pediatric nurses often staff community health fairs and visit schools to perform physical exams, immunize children, and provide routine health screenings.

Working Conditions

Pediatric nurses work in doctor's offices, clinics, hospitals, surgical centers, and other health center settings. Pediatric nurses also work in schools, in private practice and for community groups and other organizations that provide outpatient and preventive health care services for children, including children who have limited access to health care. Pediatric nurses works closely with a physician who also specializes in pediatric or family medicine. Pediatric nursing duties are similar to nursing duties in other departments, Skills there's more interaction with the patient’s family. Critical thinking skills: pediatric nurses will need to access a patients health, detecting changes in symptoms, health or pain. and will need to know when action is necessary. Compassion: You will need to be sympathetic to a patient's needs, and be able to deal with people in various states of pain, trauma and tragedy. Attention to Detail: Nurses can help doctors operate, administer medicines and work with specific treatments that, if wrong could prove fatal. Attention to detail is CRUCIAL! Organization skills: Nurses will face multiple patients, with differing needs, stages of health and risks. Being organized will be helpful. Calm under Pressure: Nurses might face emergency, lifeordeath

situations. Being able to function in the heat of emergency will be necessary. Patience: Giving care under stressful circumstances requires patience. Communication Skills: Nurses might communicate directly with patients who are scared, in pain or in shock. Families will have questions and want answers. Nurses need to be a patient listener and good communicator to help keep everyone calm and help them understand the situation.

Education and Training Years to complete post high school education is 46 years. To become a

pediatric nurse, you must first achieve certification as a registered nurse(RN). Earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at an accredited four year college, or an associates degree or diploma. Take classes in early childhood development and consider volunteering or finding parttime work in a childcentered environment, such as a day care center or school. After graduation, you must pass a national licensing exam called the NCLEXRN to practice as a registered nurse. Once you’re certified, find a job as an RN in the office of a pediatrician or family doctor, or in the pediatric department of a hospital. Take advantage of “inservice” training and other opportunities to learn more about the unique health and developmental needs of children and adolescents. Once you’ve polished and demonstrated your nursing skills, you can pursue specialized training toward a certificate in pediatric nursing. Or, you may choose to earn a Master’s degree in nursing to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP). Pediatric nurses Pediatric nurses earn $48,000 to $68,000 a year, although compensation depends on your level of education, experience, geographic location and the type of facility where you work. Overview: A pharmacist's job is to fill prescriptions for patients in their establishment. They will also commonly create drugs to fit the needs of the amounts that patients need. Besides that, it is their job to keep meticulous records of each of the patients, to communicate with insurance companies, and to supervise and teach pharmacy technicians.

Education: Typically, people must take 6-8 years of schooling to become a pharmacist. They must first earn a Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science. After that, they must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. That degree can take up to four years to earn. To finish up, they must pass 1-3 national licencing exams. Some states only require 1 of them, but obviously some states are a bit more strict with their laws.

Work:

Pharmacists can work in three places typically: hospitals, store pharmacies, and private practices. Depending on the workplace, the environment can vary from very quiet and small staffed to busy and heavily staffed. The average salary in the United States in 2015 for a pharmacist was $121,500. There are close to 300,000 jobs in America with a 3% increase in job outlook growth over the next 10 years. The field is especially growing on the west coast as well.

Reflection: The main reason that pharmacy is a great field for me is because of the consistency of the job. The idea of having a very scheduled work day and easily predicted flow of work would make a good job for me. Also, I think that the fact that I have a much more scientific brain and want to pursue a field in which I can personally help people qualifies me. I am very interested in this career and can't wait to see if the classes I take in college lead me into that field.

Reflection:

Surgeons need to be able to work as a team, be responsible, problem solve, think on their feet, like a challenge, improve, and be flexible. I would be a good candidate because I am responsible and I can think on my feet. I'm very competitive, so I like a challenge and I love to improve. I would be interested in pursuing this career because I really like human anatomy and I understand it very well. I also have a strong stomach so open wounds and such won't bother me. The only thing I don't like is how long their schooling and training is. The best part of this career is helping people and doing things that no one else can do in order to help them.
