Jewellery heena fabrication

SPACE AND DIGITAL FABRICATION

ORIGIN OF HENNA The art of henna (called mehndi in hindi) has been practiced for over 5000 years in india and countries in the middle east. There is some documentation that it might be 9000 years old. Because henna has natural cooling properties, people of the desert used henna to cool down their bodies. They make a paste of henna and soak their palms and soles of the feet in it to get an air conditioning aect. As the stain faded away, it left patterns on the skin surface which led to ideas to make designs for decorative purposes.

HAND DRAWINGS The Heena designs consist of a few speciďŹ c shapes which are further developed to form complicated designs. To get an idea of how i should startdeveloping the graphics for the designs, the study of these basic shapes was necessary. Here are some of the basic shapes hand drawn before being converted into graphics.

GRAPHICS Now that the study of shapes and hand drawings were complete, I worked on developing various Heena based graphics both in Maya and Adobe Illustrator. Here are a few of the graphics designs.

CONCEPT The concept is to use these Heena inspired designs in the form of jewellery. Heres a simple print of the graphics in order to ďŹ gure out what design would look good for the scale of jewellery.

LASER CUTTING ACRYLIC The first attempt at laser cutting the jewellery mainly included trying out different materials with different powers and intensity of the laser. After a few trials this was the outcome. The material used is acrylic.

LASER CUTTING ACRYLIC Acrylic cut jewellery had a very interesting transparent eect which would look pretty good when worn. However, this material turned out to be a bit delicate and hence not durable. Hence the laser cutting trial on dierent materials continued.

LASER CUTTING WOOD For the next attempt of laser cutting, wooden sheet was used as the material. Also the type of laser cutter used was more accurate and the cutting was done at a higher power but lower speed.
