Swedish companies contribute to at least 20 000 jobs in Indonesia* In addition to all Indonesians directly employed by Swedish or Sweden related companies, these companies also create a substantial amount of indirect jobs in the Indonesian market. It is not unusual that these businesses also inspire local creation of companies. For example, IKEA estimates that they on their own create more than 500 indirect jobs, through for instance smaller firms that provide Indonesian customers with additional services, such as delivery and installation of IKEA furniture in houses. Currently, IKEA is also sourcing and exporting products from Indonesia, such as toys, textiles, natural fiber and outdoor furniture.

Data from: National Board of Trade and Statistics Sweden Please note that there are significant trade flows from Sweden entering Indonesia through other Southeast Asian countries. Products that are bought from Sweden from an entity registered in Singapore or other regional trade hubs and afterwards distributed in Indonesia will not appear in the Sweden - Indonesia trade statistics. The Embassy therefore estimates that actual trade flows are much higher than the official statistics indicate.

Another example is H&M: Indonesia is one of their main production countries. In Indonesia, H&M are working with a significant number of locally owned factories that produce items for export to the global market. The Swedish automotive manufacturers Scania and Volvo have a relatively low number of direct employees in their companies but work with local partners and distributors that have tens of thousands of employees all around Indonesia.

ECONOMY

THE SWEDISH WAY Sweden is consistently ranked as one of the most competitive economies in the world by the World Economic Forum. It is known for its rich natural resources, innovations, high-tech companies and caring society. Freedom of expression, gender equality and a deregulated economy combined with efficient welfare and social security systems have contributed to the societal and economic development. In an international comparison, Sweden is a very open economy to international trade and investments. Exports account for almost half of the GDP, consisting largely of manufactured goods, such as vehicles, machinery, pharmaceuticals and forest industry products. Trade in services is large and growing, especially in areas of business services and transportation. Asia is an increasingly important export market for Swedish companies, even larger than the North and South American markets combined. Imports to Sweden from Asia have also grown over the years. Indonesia is a top priority for the Swedish government. Sweden is among the leading research nations in the world. As an advanced industrial nation, research plays a key role for economic development as well as for society at large.

14

The country has a long history of international commitment to active global cooperation on sustainable development. Sweden is now in the forefront of developing new environmental technologies and sustainable system solutions. Swedish companies are also spearheading the development of corporate social responsibility, which is today seen by most as a holistic and integrated way of working and necessary for achieving business goals.

Among other measures, it categorizes the giving or acceptance of bribes as serious crimes. The legislation is largely a result of Sweden adopting anti-corruption conventions in line with the EU, the Council of Europe, the UN and OECD.

Sustainable business practices A company's conduct should not risk the ability to fulfill the needs of future generations. Aspects such as respect for human rights, labour regulations, environment and anticorruption, gender equality, diversity and business ethics should be considered.

Sweden remains one of the world's least corrupt countries, ranked fourth on Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index 2012. In a recent corruption study by an independent organisation, the 20 largest Swedish companies were assessed. The resulting report shows that Swedish companies perform better than their international counterparts. New legislation against bribery came into force in Sweden on 1 July 2012.

INNOVATION - WHAT'S THE SECRET, SWEDEN? Sweden is a leader of innovation on its own merits. Heavy investments in research, encouragement of critical thinking from an early age and openness to international inuences are some of the key factors behind this development. Millions of people can stay in touch with their friends and family all around the world thanks to the free internet calling service provided by Skype. Millions of hearts are still beating because of the pacemaker. Since Volvo introduced the three-point belt, countless numbers of lives have been saved. The huge amounts of Swedish innovations the last century have not only made Sweden number one in the EU's innovation ranking; it has also

changed the daily lives of millions of people all around the world. There are many theories as to why a country in northern Europe that is home to only 0,13% of the world's population has been so successful in innovation, and also hosts one of the world's largest concentrations of multinational companies per capita. With a small population in their home country, Swedish companies have been forced to look for bigger markets

abroad, which have led to strong international influences and cooperation with other companies from all over the world. This openness also contributes to Sweden being an easy country to do business with. Furthermore, in 2015 EFEducation First, ranked Swedish people as the world's best English speakers.

In 1958, Rune Elmqvist developed a battery-run artificial pacemaker, which was used for the very first pacemaker operation done at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. Photo: Lars Lundberg/imagebank.sweden.se

A strong belief in the individual has also been highlighted as a key factor to Sweden's success in innovation. Swedish culture is very open to new ideas and thinking outside the box is commonly supported by friends and family. The society is traditionally non-hierarchical, and through flat organisations and collective decision-making, everyone is given the opportunity to speak and come up with ideas. This increases the probability of new inventions. Well-functioning rule of law combined with low corruption give creative minds more time to focus on what they do best: innovating.

Photo: sofia_sabel-ball-bearing/imagebank.sweden.se

It is also hard to ignore the fact that education is closely linked to innovation capacity. In Sweden, universities have a close collaboration with both the private and public sector. In addition, the amount of GDP spent on education is significantly higher than average, and Sweden has the second highest amount of trained engineers per capita. Engineers have traditionally played a key role in forming the Swedish industry, which has been very important for the development of the country. There is nothing that indicates that the pace of Swedish innovations will slow down. In fact, Sweden is preparing for the future. Stockholm, the capital, is the second most prolific tech hub per capita, after Silicon Valley. New start-up companies such as Klarna, Mojang and Spotify are on the rise and ready to make a positive impact on families' lives all around the world. 20

Ericsson

Providing Safe Urban Transportation to Jakarta

Investing in Human Resources - a Key Factor for Innovation

After Johannesburg, Mexico City and Singapore, the turn has come to Jakarta to integrate Scania buses in its public transportation system. July 2015 marked an important month for Scania and its local partner United Tractors: about 30 Scania buses started to serve Jakartans as part of the TransJakarta public bus network. The fleet was extended to a total of 51 units before the end of 2015, to the great satisfaction of both passengers and drivers. Parulian and Hasannudin were both experienced night bus drivers before joining the TransJakarta team. They know how to tell one bus from another and driving millions of kilometers has taught them the strengths and weaknesses of many different types of buses. “So far, Scania buses are the best we've ever driven,” both Parulian and

Hasannudin confirm. “Not only are they safe, they are also the most comfortable to drive.”The drivers are also very positive about the maintenance and training package provided by United Tractors in cooperation with Scania. “We also get specific driving training and training in detecting mechanical problems, a unique opportunity for us to grow in our roles as drivers,” says Parulian.

Ericsson was established in Indonesia in 1907 and is considered to be the oldest Swedish company in the country. To provide high quality innovative solutions within the telecommunication and digital sector, Ericsson works constantly to improve the skill and competence of its staff. “Ericsson continuously strives to be a leading ICT player, regionally and worldwide. To make that happen, we need our employees to be updated on the latest technologies. Therefore we provide regular courses and training, as well as individual development plans, so that our staff can excel, both in technical knowledge and leadership” says Meriam W. Katombo, Vice President of Human Resources at Ericsson Indonesia. Training modules are held both in the office and in tech labs, and there is also the

possibility for employees to attend trainings in the regional office, the headquarters, or both, depending on their knowledge in their field of action. Ericsson has also built their own e-learning facility, which employees can use to grow in their positions. Laili Aidi, a graduate of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH), has been working for Ericsson Indonesia for one and a half years and is very happy with the opportunities to grow and develop within in the company. “Ericsson really takes human development seriously. Making Digital Marketing Possible for SMEs

Grown from the Nordic mobile culture with a global mindset from the start, the company is gaining fans and partners from all across the globe. In Indonesia, with its unique digital habit, TEO has a major focus on Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs).

“Helping SMEs means giving a better future for the economy of Indonesia”

Indonesia has a large number of SMEs, in total 57,4 million at the end of 2014 and still counting. Danny Rittonga, CEO TargetEveryOne “We help them to develop mobile marketing solutions so “The digital market in Indonesia has grown that they can increase their brand exponentially with a majority of individual awareness and sales,” says Danny. players,” said Danny Ritongga, CEO Target EveryOne Indonesia. “As an individual or a TEO and Danny believe SMEs are the small size business owner in their country's backbone, having saved community, they have often set up a small Indonesia from several financial crises. business which has niche and segmented “Helping SMEs means giving a better market, but with zero digital marketing future for the economy of Indonesia.”

One such community is Oksibil, Pegunungan Bintang, located about three thousand feet above sea level, in the Pegunungan Bintang regency of West Papua. The location is very remote and the villagers have difficulties accessing many things they need, including electricity.

24

There are many communities around Indonesia, and in the world, who live in isolated areas. Many times, this prevents them from accessing the power grid. Instead, these communities often obtain their electric power from one or several diesel generators.

For years there was only one single diesel power plant which provided electricity to the community, but at a significantly higher cost than for those connected to the power grid. The only way to bring fuel to the village is by air, and the soaring costs of air transportation, in combination with high fuel prices led to expensive electricity. That was why the availability of electricity for the community was limited to only 8 – 12 hours per day. To reduce costs, PT PLN (Persero), a government-owned electricity company has built an off-grid solar power plant with

1,280 solar modules capable of generating 300 kW of electric power. In this project, the Swedish company ABB, one of the world's leading electricity and technology companies, provided an energy storage system (ESS) that stores the excess electricity generated by day, and distributes it at night or when needed. “By using clean renewable solar energy rather than diesel, this simple yet reliable system has significantly reduced power generation costs and emissions in Oksibil,” said Ferdinand Sibarani, ABB's Power Electronics sales engineer. Since October 2012, the highest solar power plant in Indonesia, ABB's PCS100 Energy Storage System (ESS), has radically changed community life. Now the villagers can enjoy a 24/7 stable electricity supply, at a lower cost, and at their convenience.

SWEDEN LEADS BY EXAMPLE IN CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Extensive environmental protection and active measures to respect human rights, improve work environments, and help in fighting corruption. Many of today's Swedish companies are at the forefront of integrating a sustainable approach to business in their strategies and daily management.

Environment: greener means richer Strict legislation combined with a high level of environmental awareness and knowledge have led Swedish companies to be environmentally innovative and efficient in their operations. Low-impact production

28

technologies, in particular within industrial production, are now often exported to other countries. Sweden was also the first country to require sustainability reports from the over 50 state-owned enterprises. Since the mid1990s, Sweden has managed to combine economic growth with falling emissions levels.

“Sustainability is good for the long term protability of the business”

Train travel is one of the most sustainable ways of transportation. It also offers great views.

Anti-corruption Corruption, identified by the World Bank as one of the greatest threats to growth, has become one of the biggest challenges within CSR. Sweden remains one of the world's least corrupt countries and most Swedish companies perform better than their international counterparts in a recent study made by Transparency International.

Gender equality Gender equality is an important aspect of the way companies work with corporate responsibility. Equality can be promoted by making it possible for parents to combine work and family, encouraging shared participation in childcare and giving women and men equal opportunities to rise to leadership positions. The government of Sweden consists of 50% women.

Human rights The Swedish government expects all Swedish companies, private or stateowned, to respect human rights in all their operations. The government has therefore recently launched the action plan for business and human rights, and aims to translate the UN Guiding Principles into practical action on a national level.

Photo: Sofia Sabel /imagebank.sweden.se

The term corporate social responsibility (CSR), also known as sustainable business practices, is used to describe the work companies do to have a positive impact on society, the environment and the economy. The scope of the term CSR has expanded dramatically over the years and now covers business operations as diverse as fighting corruption in the supply chain and promoting local environmental efforts. Swedish companies have a long history of active CSR work in many different areas. Today, the most important lesson learnt for most of them is that sustainability is good for the long term profitability of the business. Costs are cut when resources such as energy are saved, and more efficient staff and operations management lead to increased productivity.

29

SWEDISH LEADERSHIP FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT The private sector accounts for most of the investments in the world's lowand middle-income countries. A dedicated business sector that assumes long-term responsibility is therefore crucial to the creation of jobs, strengthening of markets and building of sustainable communities. Swedish Leadership for Sustainable Development is a network made up of 20+ companies, selected expert organizations and a Development Finance Institution. The network is coordinated by Sida, the Swedish Development Cooperation Agency, and has become a forum for valuable knowledge exchange as well as a platform for new partnerships, concrete projects and collaborative models for poverty reduction and sustainable development.

Creating jobs with decent conditions. Combating corruption and unethical behavior. Reducing environmental impact and using resources more efficiently. Using information technology to strengthen people's freedom of expression and contribute to transparent, efficient and competitive markets. Identifying and supporting new forms of financing for sustainable business and development impact.

Projects within the network include initiatives for vocational training and a joint project to reduce water and chemical use in the textile industry. The network has also contributed to the negotiations shaping the new sustainable development goals, with a special focus on anti-corruption and the overall importance of active participation from the business sector for sustainable development. The network gathers at CEO level once a year to assess the work done and set the framework and guidelines for the next year.

Oriflame

Empowering Women to Realize Their Dreams Through its sales concept, Oriflame contributes to the empowerment of women in Indonesia. There is a direct correlation between the proportion of women in the work force and the GDP growth of a country. A more equitable society also has a positive impact on the well-being of children. When they first joined Oriflame Dewi Agusanti and Eka Fetranika only expected some extra money to support their families. At the time Eka worked as a producer for an Indonesian television channel and Dewi had just decided to resign from her office work due to a difficult pregnancy. These two women shared a similar dream: to become independent housewives, with the possibility to work from home. When their friend asked them to join Oriflame's sales force, they agreed because it seemed easy. “I didn't expect that selling Oriflame products could change my life,” said Dewi. A few months after joining, both of them were surprised to see how being part of Oriflame's sales force had improved their lives. “It's not only about selling a product and getting some money, it's a chance to self-improvement. We gain knowledge on how to run a business as well as how to maintain good relationships with people,” said Dewi. They knew this Swedish

32

cosmetic brand was of good quality, and they had both been loyal customers long before joining the sales force. Combined with a reliable sales system they believed Oriflame was going to be a success story in Indonesia. Now Eka has pursued her dream, resigned from her work, and become a university teacher with a lot more time to take care of her family, supported by the extra income from Oriflame sales. Meanwhile, Dewi is running her Oriflame business full time and witnessing that is a very reliable way to support her family. It helped them achieve what they wanted. “We still need to work hard to expand our networks to increase sales. But the reward, more independence and flexibility, is worth it,” say both Dewi and Eka.

“It’s a chance to self-improvement. We gain knowledge on how to run a business as well as how to maintain good relationships with people.”

SKF

Bring Children to Meet the World

SKF has integrated CSR throughout its business policies, and engaging in the communities where they are active is one important aspect. Since 2010 SKF organizes yearly football tournaments for teenagers who can not afford to go to Sweden. The winning team is brought to Gothia Cup in Sweden, fully sponsored by SKF. Gothia Cup is an annual youth football competition, the largest and most international youth tournament in the world. Every year more than 1600 teams from 70 nations take part. “At the tournament, the players don’t only compete; they also meet new friends from different backgrounds. Although the children feel a little bit homesick during the first few days, they are happy and excited when they explore the new place, share experiences with other players and meet peers from other countries”, says Nyoman, SKF project leader. “ I am proud to contribute to letting the youngsters from the neighborhood meet the world.”

Tetra Pak Stainless Equipment

Being Good is Good for Business Tetra Pak Stainless Equipment (TPSE) was founded in 1984 and is part of the Tetra Pak group. Today the company employs more than 500 people in Indonesia and enjoys a significant business growth; more than 80% of the company's business is related to export. Over the years a robust framework for the company's CSR activities has been developed focusing on being an attractive employer, a responsible neighbour and to ask suppliers to follow their example. Health initiatives play an important role in the performance of the company. A healthy workforce means low absenteeism which is fundamental to both quality and productivity. The company has its own medical clinic with on-site medical doctor, annual medical checkups for all staff and a comprehensive health plan which covers all staff and family members. Tetra Pak recognises the right to collective bargaining by the employees. At TPSE there is a long standing and productive relationship between the company and the Workers' Council. All policies related to employment terms and conditions are documented in a comprehensive Collective Labour Agreement, which is renegotiated every 2 years.

“TetraPak Stainless Equipment has given me an opportunity to grow and the working environment here is fun with strong working ethics.” 34

Dede Akbar, Process Ofce Support TPSE

“TPSE has given me an opportunity to grow and the working environment here is fun with a strong work ethic. I see a strong focus on safety at TPSE. Today, each project on customers' site – anywhere in the world - must be governed by safety officers from us. This is not only to secure a safe working environment for us, but it also inspires our customers to do the same”, says Dede Akbar, Process Office Support. Given the nature of the company's business, it is crucial to retain and develop staff continuously. Over the last 10 years the company has witnessed an annual staff turnover of less than 5%. As part of its elaborated CSR plan, TPSE is also actively engaged in close communication with the neighbours of the factory and also encourages all suppliers to follow the company standard Business Conduct procedures. This is governed by regular follow ups including supplier on site audits.

IKEA

The Blue Bag – Reducing Plastic and Improving Sanitation For those who shop frequently at IKEA, the big blue bag Frakta (which means “to carry” in Swedish) is a familiar item. In every IKEA store in the world, to reduce plastic waste, customers have to use this iconic blue shopping bag to bring their purchased items home. It is also durable enough for varied longterm use: laundry bag, shopping bag, rain cover and more. In Indonesia, the blue bag also holds another story. Since IKEA opened in Indonesia in 2014, one of its aims has been to support a cause that improves the life of the people living in Jakarta. The IKEA concept of not giving away free plastic bags was a new challenge, whereas the most common practice in Indonesian retail is giving away free plastic bags as part of the expected service. We want customers to participate in improving the environment by purchasing the environmentally friendly IKEA blue bag. This is when the idea of the blue bag came up. Everyone who shops in IKEA must buy a blue bag in order to bring their purchased products home. Every blue bag sold at IKEA Indonesia contributes to the improvement of a septic tank in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, in

cooperation with Mercy Corps. The goal is to increase the amount of toilets linked to the septic tank so that in two years' time the sanitation in Penjaringan will be greatly improved and with it the quality of life of its inhabitants. IKEA's aim to improve water and sanitation in Indonesia is also the starting point for the Blue Bag Water Innovation Award Challenge. Open to all students in Indonesia, this competition offers a scholarship to pursue a Master's degree in Water Management at Lund University, Sweden.

STUDY IN SWEDEN: DON'T JUST PICK A PLACE. PICK A FUTURE. The number of Indonesians studying in Sweden has increased steadily in the past few years, along with research and university to university collaboration between the two countries. Currently, around 150 Indonesians study in Sweden. Sweden has a forefront position in innovation, new technology, sustainability and equality. Swedish people are some of the most creative, well-educated and freethinking in the world – partly thanks to Sweden's world class higher education system which has fostered new ideas since the 15th century. The first university was founded in 1477, starting a long

tradition of education and research. Sweden is also home to the prestigious Nobel Prizes for research excellence, awarded to over 500 researchers since 1901. A degree from a Swedish university means unlocking the potential for talents to take the lead in their career and to thrive in the global workforce.

The Swedish School of Textiles in Borås. Research and development of smart textiles create unique opportunities for Sweden.

Innovation is closely linked to research and development. Sweden is one of Europe's top three spenders in this area, investing 3.4 per cent of GDP, surpassing the EU-wide target of 3 per cent GDP investment by 2020 by a wide margin. Currently 150 Indonesian students study in Sweden, and both individual universities and the Swedish Institute offer scholarships for talents. Many Indonesian students also come to Sweden on LPDP scholarships. So far six Swedish universities have collaboration agreements with LPDP and discussions are ongoing with others. Swedish universities regularly participate in the yearly EU Higher Education Fair (EHEF) in Indonesia. In September 2014, a delegation of ten Rectors of prominent Swedish universities visited Indonesia, and in November 2015, nine Swedish universities came to Jakarta, Bandung,

new ideas with others, which fosters creativity. I also developed a greater understanding of gender equality and environmental issues.”

Arnando Ferdian decided to study digital communication at the Chalmers University of Technology. Sweden's advanced position in innovation and technology, especially in telecommunication, attracts many international students to its universities.

“The most important thing I learned during my studies in Sweden was how to interact with people from different countries, which helps me in my career as an international fashion artist. It also gave me courage to be strong and to be myself - I am not afraid to present visually provocative and challenging ideas that question the conventional wisdoms of both East and West. Sweden showed me what art is really about. I learned to be focused, to work hard and to brainstorm

“I studied in a very international class, and it was a great advantage to share and learn from people of different nationalities. The university environment in Sweden is very non-hierarchical and there are almost no boundaries between students and teachers. The teachers were very involved and encouraged us to learn more and more, and a lot of practical work and group discussions helped us gain a deeper understanding of our subjects. Technology is present everywhere in Swedish society, which enriched my knowledge and my vision on how to develop Indonesia. What I liked most about studying in Sweden was

the fact that I learned to appreciate every effort while trying to reach an objective. Whatever the result, the process is almost as important. I implement this credo in my work today and not only do I get a solid team, I also get the best results for projects that we manage.”
