No Longer Business As Usual by Linda Sechrist

T

he COVID-19 monkey wrench, unexpectedly tossed into our personal lives and business livelihoods, halted routine homelife and commerce as usual, forcing businesses accustomed to providing hands-on services and close human interaction to think creatively. Local small business owners Caroline Thonon, founder of Beautiful Health, in Naples, as well as Deb and David Martin, co-owners of Lotus Blossom Clinic, in Fort Myers, have been determined to survive the incredibly challenging circumstances.

Seven days before receiving the sheltering in place order, work on Beautiful Health’s new e-commerce website was completed. “The site, a big investment for Thonon, wasn’t live yet. “We had no immediate plans for launching and Caroline Thonon promoting it so that people surfing the web for organic, natural beauty and health products could find us. Fortunately, I had been in my green clean beauty business long enough to nurture and establish a base of faithful clients. We notified them that the site was ready for online orders,” explains Thonon. Creating a demand for natural skin care and beauty products when the majority of women were only leaving home for necessities and essential work required imaginative thinking. “We came up with the idea of three different Care Packages with natural and organic products intended for self-care. Some products included were a body scrub, body lotion, locally handmade soap, stress tea, skin care made with calendula and star flowers. The concept wasn’t a moneymaker. We absorbed shipping and packaging costs. It kept us busy and we survived,” says Thonon. Using her health coaching experience, Thonon also created videos on subjects such as how to improve digestion that suffers under stress and how to make hand sanitizer using Thieves oil, a blend of essential oils. “I work with a great team of professionals who were excited to safely reopen with limited hours. To protect our clients during treatments, therapists wear masks and appointments are scheduled every two hours. We also provide clients a free mask and hand sanitizer. 24

Lotus Blossom Clinic

The Martins stepped out of their handson, personal clinic experience comfort zone to create Spoonful Experiences, a unique online event offering a connecting and supportive presence intended to build community. “For this we are collaborating with 20 of our clinic’s practitioners and teachers to create an outreach experience that builds a community of people who are aware of the power of natural and holistic medicine. Our initial and primary offerings are three-to-10-minute experiential videos providing education on ancient methods used for prevention, maintaining wellness and reversing chronic ill-health conditions. Spoonful Experiences are designed to give people more choices regarding their own healthcare: empowering the use of natural healing mechanisms already inherent in the body,” explains Martin, who notes that this was not a direction they intended to pursue prior to sheltering-in. “We recently took over an adjoining space we had been considering adding to our clinic for nine years. Wanting to be more eclectic and add more to our menu of services, we doubled our size and brought in new practitioners and modalities. Looking at future prospects, we think the next six months are going to be most interesting. With so many positives and negatives, the future will be determined by how we collectively respond. I feel the need for unification now and we are doing our part to bring that about with our online events,” advises Martin. She shares that the crisis has led to the clinic promoting a newly developed online store to sell prevention and wellness kits, most of which contain Chinese herbs. To protect clients, Lotus Blossom Clinic installed a hospital-grade HEPA filter that arrests very fine particles. “The staff wear masks and Dr. David meets everyone at the door to take their temperature. All of these measures, including social distancing, are taken seriously as we open up for physical classes/events such as Crystal Bowls with Jenny Hong on Thursdays,” advises Martin, who along with Thonon, believes that managing a positive mindset is essential when confronting such challenging circumstances.
