History of Swift Creek Mill Records indicate that Swift Creek Mill was in existence as early as 1663. It is believed to be the oldest grist mill in this country. Henry Randolph I, born in Little Houghton, Northamptonshire, England, migrated to this country about 1640. In 1655, he acquired a large tract of land in Bermuda Hundred on Swift Creek where he erected the present mill. An heir of Henry Randolph I, William Bland Randolph, deeded the mill to William Rowlett on February 20, 1805, and it became known as Rowlett’s Mill. In 1852, the Rowlett heirs conveyed the mill to the Swift Creek Manufacturing Company. On May 9th and 10th, 1864, a battle was fought around the mill while General B.F. Butler’s Army of the James attempted to cross Swift Creek. Following the Civil War, the property became Schmidt’s Distillery, making corn whiskey. Following this, the property changed hands several times, was operated as a grist mill and became known in 1929 as Swift Creek Mill. It continued to operate as a grist mill until about 1956. On December 2, 1965, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse opened its doors. To convert the old grist mill into a dinner theater required an addition to the three story building to house the kitchen, dressing rooms and restrooms. Stairways were built leading to upper and lower dining levels, and to the theatre located on the top floor. Much of the old equipment in the mill was refurbished to lend a rustic atmosphere. Swift Creek Mill has been preserved as both an historical landmark and cultural outlet for the talent of local artists, skilled actors, directors, designers and technicians whose efforts have made possible the artistic achievements of the Mill. The 300 year old Swift Creek Mill has been made a Virginia Historical Landmark and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. As of fall 2013, Swift Creek Mill is now ADA-compliant, offering increased access and services to persons with disabilities. A monumental task, the renovations were completed following precise guidelines, and the iconic structure continues to retain its historic value and status.
Curating a Memory For decades - perhaps longer - curious stories have circulated regarding Swift Creek Mill's lengthy past. This season, with the help of our friends at the Chesterfield County Historical Society, we hope to put the facts behind the stories. What really happened between the Randolph brothers? What role did the property play to early Americans? How was the Mill used during the Civil War, if at all? We want the heritage of this special place to be a real and palpable part of your experience at Swift Creek Mill Theatre. This part of visiting the Mill will also be an asset to the thousands of local school children who attend Youth Theatre every year. In the coming months, we plan to include historical information and exhibits in the Mill Room as we uncover more details on our fact-finding journey. As the saying goes, learning doesn't happen in a vacuum, so we welcome you to come along with us and offer your discoveries as well. Together we will "curate a memory" of Swift Creek Mill that we can pass down through the generations.

From the artistic director Judy Garland famously said, “My history is in my songs.” The truth of that statement was never more evident than in her legendary Carnegie Hall “comeback” concert in 1961. The recording of that concert has never been out of print in the 53 years since it was issued. Many people, myself included, know that Judy Garland was born in Grand Rapids; but many, myself included, also thought it was Michigan. She was actually born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, so the History Theatre of Minnesota commissioned this show to honor their native daughter. I am very fortunate to have the stunning Grey Garrett heading up this wonderful cast of performers. I have known Grey for about 20 years now, and I admire her tremendously, both for her talent and for her dedication to the work she undertakes. By the end of the performance, I hope that you will feel as if you’ve experienced something very special, indeed! I hope you will enjoy hearing her history in the songs she chose to sing.

About the Actors Frank Creasy (multiple characters) is excited to return to the Mill to celebrate the legend of Judy Garland with you. Mill patrons may remember Frank from his several-dozen roles in The 39 Steps, or as the dog-shooting ranch hand from Of Mice and Men. Some of Frank's other favorite roles include Henry Saunders in Lend Me a Tenor, George in Chapter Two, The Apartment in Crumble (Lay Me Down Justin Timberlake), Jaques in As You Like It, and The Actor in The Woman in Black. Frank thanks his wife Carol for her constant support and encouragement. He dedicates his performance to an old friend and a true artist, the late Dave Brockie of GWAR, his cast mate at Longwood College in a production of Arsenic and Old Lace many years ago (Dave played the "Boris Karloff" role of Jonathan opposite Frank's Mortimer as his "brother.") Dave, you left us too soon but your courage and passion inspire us to be true to ourselves always. Keep rockin' across the universe. GREY GARRETT (Judy at Carnegie Hall) was last seen as Queenie in Wild Party with Firehouse Theatre Project. Other credits include I Love a Piano (RTCC nominee for Best Actress in a Musical) at Swift Creek Mill Playhouse and August: Osage County with Cadence Theatre Company (RTCC Award Winner for Best Play). New York credits include Agnes in School for Wives, Marianne in Tartuffe, Diana in All's Well That End's Well, Margareta in Faust, and Corine in Triumph of Love, all performed with Columbia University; Hermanita with the Latin cast of Aventurera at Madison Square Garden, Gerald's Method and American Girls both performed at Abingdon Theatre Company. Screen appearances include Rescue Me, Life on Mars, Law & Order, As the World Turns, Fatal Encounters and Across the Universe. Many thanks to family and friends for their support! Also, a special nod of gratitude to the Fan Free Clinic and Access Now. RICHARD KOCH (multiple characters) is very happy to once again be on Swift Creek Mill Theatre’s stage, having recently appeared as Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone. Other Swift Creek shows include Blithe Spirit, The Foreigner, A Tuna Christmas, Arsenic and Old Lace, Run for Your Wife, Two Bits, The Cocoanuts, Floyd Collins, See How They Run, Out of Order, The Fantasticks, Greetings and A Few Good Men. Other favorite area roles include Marcellus in VA Repertory Theatre’s The Music Man; Buddy in Cadence Theatre’s Kimberly Akimbo; Truffaldino in Henley Street Theatre’s A Servant of Two Masters; Tateh in Stage 1’s Ragtime and Mr. Manningham in Theatre at the Bolling-Haxall House’s Angel Street. Richard is Performing Arts Manager for The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen as well as a free-lance actor performing in theatre, film, TV and radio. Richard is very happy to be working with this wonderfully talented team, especially the beautiful Miss Vicki. Enjoy. Lisa Kotula (Ethel Gumm) is delighted to share the stage with such dear friends in this return to the Mill, having reprised her role as Kate Keller in the Mill’s recent production of The Miracle Worker. Other favorite past roles include Mrs. Mayor in Seussical, the Musical and the Wardrobe in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast with Theatre IV; Steffy in I Ought to Be in Pictures with Barksdale Theatre Hanover Tavern (now Virginia Rep); Soupy Sue in Urinetown, the Musical, Rose Gordon in Flowers for Algernon with Swift Creek Mill Theatre; Robin in Godspell with Cadence Theatre Company; and Hildegarde in Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them and Barbara in Crumble (Lay Me Down Justin Timberlake) with Firehouse Theatre Project. In November 2006, Lisa launched a monthly publication for Richmond theatre lovers. See www.richmondmarquee.com for more information. Vicki McLeod (multiple characters) is, as always, happy to be back at The Mill, having last appeared here as Ruth, in Blithe Spirit. Richmond audiences may remember her from other productions over the past twenty-five years. Some of her favorite roles include: Billie Dawn in Born Yesterday at Barksdale Theatre; Bella in Angel Street at The Bolling Haxall House; and Harpo Marx in The Cocoanuts here at Swift Creek Mill. Vicki's past is also furnished with a considerable amount of on-camera regional and national commercial, training film and voice-over work. By day, Vicki is passionate about her career as an ACE-certified personal fitness trainer, specializing in home-based fitness. She is elated to once again share the stage with her favorite actor and personal leading man, Richard Koch. This one is for you, Dad...out there, beyond the rainbow. Grace Mincks (Judy in memory) could not be more excited to make her second appearance on
the Mill stage! It's been a long 8 years since her last show here, Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker, and she is happy to be back, returning this time as a rising high school senior! Favorite roles include Margaret White in Carrie: The Musical, Melpomene in Xanadu, and Liz in Chicago. She would like to thank her large family, her very best friends, and boyfriend Bryan for their continued support. Enjoy the show!
