MANAGING DIRECTOR POSITION Position and Responsibilities The Managing Director will direct and lead all administrative and operational aspects of Swift Creek Mill Theatre, and will report to the Board of Directors. The Artistic Director and Managing Director work in close collaboration to provide professional leadership for the institution. Responsibilities include the following areas: • • • •

In charge of, manages and oversees the Mill office staff, food services staff and theatre staff. Oversees marketing and fund-raising. Developing an abiding and productive partnership with the Artistic Director in support of the vision for the future of Swift Creek Mill Theatre. Develop and implement strategies that serve this overall direction for The Mill in ways that are artistically rich and financially productive. Give particular focus to building the Annual Fund, in order to reduce pressure on the box office; this incorporates working directly with the Director of Development and Marketing Offer strategic leadership to the marketing efforts to win back lapsed ticket buyers, as well as identify and attract new ones Work closely with the Board of Directors to increase transparency and communication, as well as strengthen of the Board’s capacity for influence and resources. Facilitate the work of staff, including identifying opportunities for their individual professional development, and encourage through identified key senior members that all are working in alignment with the Mill’s plans and objectives.
Qualifications The hiring of the managing director will be accomplished through a search committee of five key board members and input from the Artistic Director with the decision based on the following: • A track record of non-profit performing arts management in an organization of comparable size and scale, preferably in theatre. • Knowledge of a rich appreciation for theater. • Success in effective financial planning and execution, including building and managing budgets. • Clear understanding of financial issues in managing an artistic organization of The Mill’s size. • A strong background in working collaboratively with a board of directors. • Successful track record of leading, motivating and managing staff.

Proven experience in developing the diverse revenue streams required in an institution of The Mill’s size and scope: audience development, fundraising, partnerships, rentals, etc. A desire and ability to serve as an ambassador for Swift Creek Mill Theatre. A minimum of five years of senior leadership experience. Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree (MBA or MFA) a plus. Ability to work in a partnership team with the artistic director and the board of trustees. Some knowledge of state and local laws, regulations and policies pertaining to the operation of a nonprofit theatre, including some knowledge of contract law with theatre producing agencies to assure the Mill meets all of its obligations, legal or otherwise. Knowledge of basic technology tools for effective management: Word, Excel, Photoshop, Email, PowerPoint, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Vendini (or similar software).

A desire to be part of the Richmond/ Tri-Cities Community. Compensation The salary and benefits package will be commensurate with experience and competitive with other companies of comparable stature and size. Start Date The position is currently vacant and during the interim the role is being assumed by the Director of Development and Marketing while simultaneously maintaining her responsibilities. The Search Committee hopes to make its decision by early fall, with a start date as soon as possible thereafter.
