Featured Artist

SD

is a self-taught artist whose haron work is defined by bold colors, enmark bright highlights, and deep

shadows, with an emphasis on the natural world. The majority of her work is realistic, from landscapes to what she calls “close-ups of items from nature such as flowers, shells, or even tree bark. She works from her own photographs but takes liberties with the images, eschewing the precision of photorealism for a more spontaneous style. The works in this show are all acrylic on canvas. She is a lifelong resident of Southside Virginia and lives with her husband and their chihuahua Beowulf. Find out more at 460arts.com

Letter from the President Dear Mill Family Members, Isn’t it nice to come together? Whether you’re here with your loved ones, alongside your friends, or on your own to grab a bit of personal time, Swift Creek Mill Theatre is a place for community that is not likely one you’ll forget. After all, people have been gathering here for over 350 years! One of the things I love about this building is its longstanding culture. Starting out as a gristmill in Colonial Virginia, Randolph’s Mill, as it was then called, welcomed people from the surrounding communities to conduct their business, and perhaps to catch up on the latest news from their neighbors. Of course, for the past 51 years the Mill’s role has been introducing Central and Southside Virginians to professional theatre and creating a home-away-from-home for people who love the arts. As you came in or while dining with us, you may have noticed the artwork on the walls of the main dining room. In addition to theatre, we are proud to host exhibitions by Virginia artists during Mainstage productions. We call it our Featured Artists Program. Our Featured Artist for The Musical of Musicals is Sharon Denmark, a Southside Virginia native. If you didn’t have much time when you arrived, be sure to browse her delightful work during intermission. If you know of talented artists who may be interested in exhibiting here at the Mill, please have them contact the office during business hours for more information. If this is your first time to Swift Creek Mill Theatre, maybe you feel the way many of our patrons feel – that no matter the play or the reason you’re here, this gathering place has something special that makes you want to come back. Thank you for joining us. I hope to see you again soon! Your Friend in the Arts,

Sterling Hawkins Sterling Hawkins President, Board of Directors Swift Creek Mill Theatre

Theatre Spotlight

Chills & Thrills Are Coming This Fall! Recently we announced our very fun (and everso-slightly different) 2017-2018 Mainstage Season. Among the six excellent titles is a thriller we’re especially excited to debut as our season opener: The Woman in Black. If you remember a film not long ago by the same name starring Daniel Radcliffe (of Harry Potter fame), you’re on the right track. They are both based on the novel by author Susan Hill. Originally released in 1983, the book achieved such success that it was adapted for the stage. The play was such a huge hit that it became the second longest-running non-musical play in the history of London’s West End. Unfortunately, for years London kept this gem to itself, until recently, when Swift Creek Mill Theatre became one of very few theatres licensed to produce this mortifying thriller in America! Without blood and gore, the carefully crafted piece of stage wizardry is suspensefully frightening and one of the most enjoyably scary plays available. We’re sure it will be a wonderful, energetic launch into our 2017-2018 season (and a fantastic reason for giving your guy or gal a squeeze!) Individual tickets are on sale August 1. FlexPasses and season tickets are available now at amazing rates. Visit swiftcreekmill.com/2017-2018-season for more info. See you there! 19

Biographies DAVID ATKINS (JIDDER) recalls that in late fall of 2003, a fellow music teacher

interrupted his Monday morning coffee infusion, exclaiming “You’d make a great Captain von Trapp!” Long story short, the theater bug bit, hard, and almost 15 years and 25 productions later, David is making his professional debut here at the historic Swift Creek Mill Theatre. Favorite roles include Julian Marsh in 42nd Street, George Peterson in Same Time, Next Year, and John the Baptist/Judas in Godspell. When not on stage, he is an elementary school music teacher, and he has served several local churches over the years in various musical leadership roles. David thanks Tom and Paul; the staff and crew at Swift Creek Mill, his fellow cast members for their patience, laughter, and the opportunity to learn from them; and his wife of 34 years, Susan, and their son, Brian, for their continued support. To all the actors, directors, musicians, crew members, family, friends, and theater people with whom he has worked and from whom he has learned over the years (you know who you are), thank you for helping to make this “bucket list” wish come true!

DERRICK JAQUES (WILLY) is making his Swift Creek Mill Theatre debut. He spent the majority of this year touring with Jesus Christ Superstar’s 45th Anniversary Production, serving as dance captain and Jesus understudy. Most recently he understudied and performed the role of Greg in Richmond Triangle Player’s It Shoulda Been You. Other favorite roles include: Cable in Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s South Pacific, Frid in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, Chantal in Jerry Herman’s La Cage aux Folles, Simeon in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Mary Sunshine in John Kander and Fred Ebb’s Chicago. He is thrilled to bring the five styles of these musical theatre geniuses to you in one hilarious evening! Derrick teaches hot yoga at Bikram Yoga Richmond and is also an avid Disney enthusiast. Much love to fiancé Kikau, and special thanks to Tom, Paul, and the cast. Follow @ DerrickJaques on Instagram and Twitter. PAIGE REISENFELD (JUNE) is very excited to have this opportunity working with such talented people at the Mill. She has just finished her first year with Virginia Rep on Tour and is looking forward to returning in September. She graduated from VCU in 2016 with a major in vocal performance and is the soprano section leader at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church. In her free time she enjoys kickboxing, lifting heavy objects, sewing, creating things with sticks and string, playing cooperative board games, yelling at her very spoiled cat, and spending time with her loved ones, all fueled by copious amounts of coffee. Thank you so much to my family and friends for all your support! CAROLINE WHISNANT (ABBY) is an American opera singer and soprano whose repertoire encompasses Richard Strauss, Puccini, Wagner, bel canto, lieder, American Standards and musical theater. Her signature roles include the title role in Richard Strauss’s Elektra, the Dyer’s Wife in Die Frau ohne Schatten, the title role in Puccini’s Turandot, and Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Ring Cycle. She has performed operatic roles in Italian, German, French, and English as well as concerts in Greek, Chinese, Russian, Spanish and Finnish. During her career Caroline has performed in over half of the states in the US and in 13 different countries on four continents. Caroline received her bachelor’s degree from Converse College with distinction in performance and a master of music degree from Florida State University. She then spent four years at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia honing her craft. During this time she won or was a finalist in several competitions, including the North Carolina State and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Metropolitan Opera Competitions and the Luciano Pavarotti International Vocal Competition. In 2005, Opernwelt hailed her as one of Europe’s Female Singers of the Year for her role debut as Lady Macbeth in the Oper Frankfurt’s controversial Calixto Bieito production of Macbeth.
