Jane Partin

is an artist whose love of the outdoors, wildlife, and Labrador Retrievers is beautifully expressed in her paintings. Jane grew up in Mathews County, Virginia, on the Chesapeake Bay. After four years of art schools and eleven years as a commercial artist, now Jane's full time business is painting fine art. You do not have to look far to discover how professional and well received Jane's art has become. Her work is enjoyed in many private and corporate collections throughout the United States and other countries such as Canada, Europe, South America, Japan and Australia. "My love of the Chesapeake Bay area, wildlife and dogs, especially retrievers, is very evident in my work. These are usually subjects in my paintings, but I always try to tell a story - to express my own ideas. I travel extensively to set up and photograph scenes to paint. I work mostly in watercolors, oils, and acrylics. I am inspired by both of our homes, one in Mathews County with it's old docks, boats, and marsh scenes and our home in Chesterfield County with it's wooded acres and wildlife. I could never have gotten so involved in art without the support of my husband Danny. He helps me in many ways, from setting up scenes to making frames for my paintings. s ’ e u Bl c ue s Curious about how the technical aspects of Swift Creek Mill’s shows are carried out? Meet Jason “Blue” Herbert, the Mill’s Technical Director, and the newest staff member of the Mill Family. For many years, Artistic Director Tom Width and contracted technicians were responsible for ALL the heavy lifting and technical execution behind the shows. That’s A LOT of work! So, in 2015, Blue Herbert joined the team to lend a much-welcomed hand. When preparing for a production, there are many interconnected aspects to consider. A Technical Director works with other directors and designers to ensure that lighting, sound, properties, set pieces, computers and all other “pieces and parts” are successfully completed and come together seamlessly. Good technical direction can make performances look effortless to the audience, despite the fact that they are actually very intricate and painstaking collaborations. Blue has worked in almost every aspect of the Entertainment Industry: The Richmond Ballet as Production Tech & Lighting Designer; Studio Roanoke as Technical Director & Resident Designer; The UniverSoul Circus as Lighting Director & Motor Tech; Mill Mountain Theatre as Master Electrician, Sound Engineer & Carpenter; and Morrison Brothers Music as Lighting Systems Tech & Lighting Designer. When not at work, Blue enjoys time with his fiancée, 2 cats and his knitting. 19

Letter from the President Dear Mill Family Member, My name is Sterling Hawkins, President of the Board of Directors at Swift Creek Mill Theatre. However, my relationship with the Mill goes much deeper. One of my earliest memories is attending shows while in high school and college. As a young person and into adulthood, I held a variety of roles here â&#x20AC;&#x201C; waiting tables, serving on the buffet line, working the box office, acting on the stage and serving as stage manager-- all forming a special place in my heart like the Mill has for so many other patrons, employees and performers alike. For over fifty years, Swift Creek Mill has brought professional theatre to Southside Virginia. Many families have enjoyed our shows, whether they attend Mainstage productions or educational Youth Theatre or both! During this time, hundreds of local theatre professionals have graced our stage. One thing that sets the Mill apart is its history and unique location. Swift Creek Mill is one of the oldest historic buildings in the country, and it is Virginiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only professional, producing theatre south of Richmond, which covers an expanse 75 miles north to south and almost 200 miles east to west! Moreover, the theatre was born out of the love for live theater and the need for cultural arts in our area. From the Artistic Director I unabashedly love the play you’re going to see today! I had loved it for quite some time, even though I had never seen it. Author John Cariani’s perspectives on love and relationships are alternately funny, sad, whimsical, sweet and, in his estimation, magical. I love the metaphors he uses to demonstrate the love lessons he wants to portray, and the way his simple, honest characters play those lessons out. I have been itching for the chance to direct it! I was on a theatre scouting trip to New York a few months ago, and I got to see the hit musical Something Rotten (a former SPARC student, Bud Weber, was in it; and it was directed and choreographed by a former summer stock colleague, Casey Nicholaw!) The show was great, but my favorite actor was the fellow playing Nigel Bottom, a playwright trying to compete with the already famous William Shakespeare. He was so offbeat, funny and sweet, with a lovely voice – and he was an audience favorite! At my first opportunity, I checked the program to see who this actor was, and to my great delight, it was John Cariani! His character in Something Rotten shared many of the same traits as some of his Almost, Maine characters, and that made me very happy. In Mr. Cariani’s own words, “the stories in Almost, Maine are Twilight-Zoney….they are about love, but they’re also about mystical things happening.” This is a show that almost everyone can relate to in one way or another. I think you will find much to identify with, much to smile at, and a lot to take home with you.

Biographies, Continued MARIEA TERRELL (GLORY/WAITRESS/MARVALYN/MARCI/RHONDA) has been working on projects in around town since graduating with her BFA from Shenandoah University. Her favorite performance credits include: 9 Circles, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Erica in Suburbia and Maple in Science Team. She reprised the role of Juliet in Quill Theatre’s educational tour this past season and played Teresa in Richmond Catholic Theatre’s production of The Jeweler’s Shop. Mariea also worked on an episode of Nightmare Next Door with Investigation Discovery. In addition to that, she is proud to have served as a company artist for TheatreLab’s 2015-2016 season. Mariea is absolutely thrilled to take on her first show at Swift Creek Mill.

Were it to exist, Almost, Maine, would occupy unorganized territory that is officially designated as Township Thirteen, Range Seven, or T13-R7, in the heart of Aroostook County. (Maine’s unorganized territories make up more than half of the state’s total land area.) T13-R7 is some 75 miles northwest of the northern terminus of Interstate 95; some 120 miles north of Mt. Katahdin (the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail); some 200 miles northwest of the ocean (at its closest); some 300 miles north of Portland, Maine; and some 450 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. Population: probably about 300. Median annual household income: probably about $35,000.00. Hours of daylight in mid-January: about 9. Average annual snowfall: 115 inches. (Appropriate, then, that one of Maine’s long-time senators was named Olympia Snowe. Senator Snowe. For real.) Winters in Almost, Maine, are long, cold and snowy.
