Featured Artist Paul Penrod is, at heart, a storyteller, and most of his work is a narrative of connected episodes. He executes his detailed pieces using colored pencils, ink and washes. A teacher in Prince George County Public Schools, Paul has shown in numerous Paul Penrod, right, with friend and fellow ar tist galleries, including being a Dr. Ivan Perkinson, left featured artist at the Petersburg Area Art League (PA A L ). All of his drawings tell a story from history, usually American, or “ having some connection with the history of our nation,” because his drawings combine his two passions of art and history. There have been many influences on his art. Among them are Celtic designs, Medieval manuscripts, the American southwest, and Mexican mural painters. Paul Penrod has an academic background in studio art, printmaking, and art history. He states that “it has been through the lens of art and history that I interpret the world.” Do you know a professional artist who would like to be part of the Featured Artists Program at Swift Creek Mill? Email info@swiftcreekmill.com or go to swiftcreekmill.com/featured-artists for more information.
Letter from the President Dear Mill Family Member, When anticipating another Springtime in Virginia, most of us immediately have thoughts of birds chirping, flowers blooming and freshly cut grass. It’s a great time of year to be a Virginian! It’s also a great time for students and teachers to take field trips. In our wonderful Commonwealth, students can learn about many things on field trips, including agriculture, art and history. A visit to Swift Creek Mill is a discovery of all three of these! Each year the Mill presents performances tailored to enrich young minds, from original plays for preschool and elementary students to special performances of Mainstage productions. Each show supports specific Standards of Learning and offers children the experience of a live, professional production in a real theatre. From the awe related to the historic building itself to the educational value of the shows, kids and teachers arrive and depart with smiles on their faces. In fact, our little theatre has been offering exceptional children’s programming for over 25 years! While Youth Series shows are designed with field trips in mind, tickets are available for families, too. If you are a parent or grandparent, put together your own “field trip” to the Mill. You even can meet the cast or engage in a Q&A afterward. Many times kids who attend shows at the Mill would love more time here. There may still be a chill in the air now, but before we know it, the students will be out for summer break. Another great part of the Youth Theatre program is summer camp. It’s time to sign up your favorite kids for a camp that is refreshingly different. If you know young people who want nonstop fun, hands-on theatre training and behind-the-scenes access at the Mill, apply soon – space is limited. Find out more about Youth Theatre at swiftcreekmill.com/youth-programs or call the office at 804-748-5203. We’d love to hear from you! Your Friend in the Arts,
Sterling Hawkins

From the Artistic Director I want to dedicate this production to the lady who played Miss Tweed when we last did the show in 1992: Betty Ann Grove was already a star on Broadway ( K iss Me, K ate, George M, I Remember Mama, On Your Toes ) and on television (The Ed Sullivan Show, Stop the Music, The Big Payoff) when she first came to Richmond and played the title role in Driving Miss Daisy here at the Mill. I remember being so nervous, after seeing her resumé, about directing her – what could I possibly offer to someone with these credentials? Well, she was the most delightful, hard-working actress you could possibly imagine, and she craved direction and guidance while making her own incredible contributions to the work! She went on to do Smoke on the Mountain and Something’s Afoot with us, and was always an inspiration to everyone who worked with her. Even in her later years, she could show you some tap-dancing footwork that would blow your mind, and everyone would love to watch her demonstrate! ….and all of this with delightful wit and charm . Betty Ann passed away in 2015, but I hope she’s watching and smiling and feeling proud!
