Featured Artist The luminous work of Ed Hatch is so connected to his subjects, so rooted in his environs, that one feels an immediate sense of place and wonder. Ed, a full-time artist for more than 20 years, centers his life at the same country crossroads where he grew up - a corner of rural Virginia where is great-grandparents opened a general store in 1915. This charming setting is now his studio. Across the street is the house where his father lived, and a stone’s throw away is his childhood home where he lives. An acute observer, Ed’s home base is that ideal spot for exploration and discovery - whether it’s the creeks nearby or the mountains further afield. He gently, yet powerfully conveys his curiosity, finding the extraordinary in the ‘ordinary.’ Above all, his appreciation for beauty in nature springs from each of his works. Artist’s Statement: “I see art as a visceral, almost spiritual means of communication. Since I was a boy, I have known that art fulfills me and speaks to me in ways that I find difficult to express in words. But, what I find in nature is quite simply, pure poetry. I strive to express this in my work. I see such extraordinary beauty in everyday moments – moments that might go unnoticed. I want people to participate in my paintings – to be caught up in the scenes as much as I was when I stopped to paint them – to feel the depth, the fleeting lights and the mist, to wonder what is around the bend. That’s it, I think, to share the wonder. I find great joy in my work and I am fortunate to do what I do every day.” Do you know a professional artist who would like to be part of the Featured Artists Program at Swift Creek Mill? Tuna Salad... Dressing on the Side If you’ve flipped ahead to the cast list already, you may be wondering how two actors could take on the roles of so many characters. It’s like a delightful ambrosia salad of southern silliness, set in the teeny little town of Tuna, Texas. Naturally, the wardrobe is a big part of the fun, but these are two male actors, and many of the characters are women. Any quick outfit swaps pose a bit of a timing challenge for a live performance, but gender changes are a game changer. The answer is simple enough: “dressers.” Still, pulling this off (and on) requires ample prowess. Behind the scenes are two assistants who are poised and ready to pounce, ahem, “help” our leading gentlemen become twenty-two different people. Costumes have to be in the right order, wigs and prosthetics have to be in hand, and cues have to be followed precisely. That’s not to mention the chaos of taking off the previous costume. It’s like a NASCAR (woohoo!) pitstop right on the Mill stage! (Only there aren’t fake boobs involved in a pitstop... that we know of.) As integral as dressers are to the success of the production, you also must consider the challenges involved to mentally “become” a new person every few minutes. In the span of two hours, you will witness two individuals encompass the personalities of twenty-two characters. That’s why Identity Crisis Counselors are standing by. Not really. These guys knew what they were getting into. And out of. (That just never gets old.) That said, we sincerely hope you enjoy the skill and charm our cast and crew present for you in A Tuna Christmas. 19

Letter from the President Dear Mill Family Member, Most people know that when you go to the movies, the cost of the movie ticket barely covers the cost to lease the film, especially if it’s the latest blockbuster. That’s why the concessions are so expensive. The money you and I pay to see movies goes back into Hollywood and into the corporate chain theater to keep the business running. It’s just business. But perhaps you didn’t know that every time you step into your local, professional LIVE theatre, such as not-for-profit Swift Creek Mill, your money is going back into your community. Just like the chain movie theaters, live theatres must license the works they present, often with high royalties. There are also costs to run the lights, build the sets, sew the costumes and, importantly, pay fair wages to the talented men and women who design, mount and perform in the productions. Ticket prices offset the costs to the tune of about 60%, and as you can imagine, it would be difficult for any local theatre to expect $70 per ticket. I know some people prefer the draw of the silver screen. And that’s ok. But you and I are different. We and the other 30,000+ members of the Mill Family know that being a patron of the arts bridges media and content, and hits at the heart of the matter – true artistry begins on an individual, personal level. Our few, treasured neighborhood theatres offer a glimpse into this human creativity and potential. They speak to the things that make us human, and they explore topics and talents that corporate entertainment cannot begin to encompass. So I’m not going to ask you to donate. I’m not going to implore you with “if each person gives $10, a miraculous arts goal can be achieved.” While that may be true, the important thing is that you’re here. At this moment you are part of a living, breathing arts event, keeping theatre thriving and preserving the arts in your community. So allow me to extend our thanks. Please sit back, relax and enjoy the show. We’re very glad you came and wish you the warmest of holidays. Your Friend in the Arts,

Sterling Hawkins Sterling Hawkins President, Board of Directors Swift Creek Mill Theatre

From the Artistic Director How lucky am I that this is what I get to do? Take a great script, add two wonderful actors and a terrific design team, then sit back and watch the magic happen! A director has the best of all possible worlds when he can just stage a show, and then let terrific actors have at it….and that’s what I get to do with “A Tuna Christmas”! In some ways, it’s like watching an old re-run of “I Love Lucy” – even though I know all of the jokes and all of the punch lines, it’s still so darn much fun to watch the performances! It’s the way it’s done that keeps me laughing! Familial dysfunction and political INcorrectness run amuck in Tuna, Texas – and because it’s so wrong, the comedy comes out so very right! I first saw “Greater Tuna” downtown at the old Circle in the Square space during a major NYC blizzard – but the show went on! I saw “A Tuna Christmas” on Broadway with the original cast, and I’ve been a huge fan of the series ever since! I hope you’ll be a huge fan, too, after you’ve gone on this crazy ride through the teeny, tiny town of Tuna!
