Drifty is a lovable snowman friend at the North Pole who has lots to learn. During this story, Drifty looks into the sky and sees Pluto, which is the ninth object that orbits (which means “goes around and around”) the sun. It is a dwarf planet, because it is much smaller than other planets. Drifty’s point to ponder: Do we see stars and planets in the sky when it is light or dark outside? According to the play, Rudolph is vacationing in Hawaii. Hawaii is the most recently added state of the United States of America, and it is the only state made up entirely of islands. It is located in the Pacific Ocean. Drifty’s point to ponder: Have you heard of the Hawaiian things Drifty sings and talks about?

Thank you for coming to the show today! We hope you enjoyed the performance - and learned something, too! Your Friends,

Christy

Pepita is an elf from Ecuador. Ecuador is a country in South America that is warm or hot all year. Pepita is in a foreign exchange program, which means she went far away from home to learn new things. Her first language is Spanish, but she speaks English to her North Pole friends. Cowboy Jim is one of the characters. He is from Texas, a very large state in the southern United States that is next to Mexico. Jim comes to the North Pole to help with the reindeer. He is called a cowboy because he spends all day catching cows with a long piece of rope called a lasso. Drifty sings about his favorite dogie, which is a cowboy word for a baby cow (or calf) with no mother. Drifty doesn’t know what a rodeo is, but it is a sport based on the work that cowboys and cowgirls do, like horse riding, bull riding, cow roping and other activities. Varmints is an old cowboy word that Jim uses that means “troublesome wild animals.” Later on, Cowboy Jim grabs his fiddle, which is what a violin is called when it is used to play country music. Drifty’s point to ponder: Can you think of other instruments used in country music? Santa and the other characters talk about the water cycle. This is the way water falls from the sky as rain or snow and runs into the ground and rivers, and then the sun causes it to evaporate (or turn into invisible water vapor) to go back into the sky so that it can rain or snow again. The song “Santa’s Holiday Hoedown” is styled after music for a traditional country dance. The Virginia Reel is one type of very old country dance – hundreds and hundreds of years old. Some country dances today are still based on the Virginia Reel. Download the complete Drifty’s Reindeer Roundup study guide at swiftcreekmill.com /driftys-reindeer-roundup
