Swiss photographer Walter Bosshard (1892-1975) is a pioneer of photojournalism. An intrepid storyteller using words and pictures, Bosshard’s dispatches during World War II helped build a bridge between Asia and Europe. As a correspondent, he traveled throughout China during the 1930s and documented the Sino-Japanese War. He was also one of the few foreign correspondents to gain access to Chairman Mao Zedong. Bosshard’s reportage covered China’s politics, economy, social customs and culture. Some of his most memorable work documented life in remote Chinese villages. This exhibition features 160 photos (many being shown for the first time publicly), 18 albums, and one film. 8

Swiss artist Yves Netzhammer’s new solo exhibition, “Refurnishing Thoughts,” is a comprehensive presentation of his work across various media. It provides an exhaustive expression of his tireless inquiries into space and medium, as well as his sustained interest in time, environment, and society. The exhibition comprises seven short animations, more than 30 steel installations, and a dozen-plus wall paintings.

Roofer, the quintet featuring Swiss double-bass player Luca Sisera, specializes in contemporary and liberated jazz music, but always keeps an eye on the tradition of classical jazz. Their compositions bear witness to great vigor and verve, trickery and groove, passionate improvisation as a collective and mutual swerve through rapid unisono parts. Together with their audience, the five musicians delight in “raising the roof” at their lively performances. Roofer’s China tour will feature songs from their debut album Prospect released in November 2015.

Following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Switzerland in January 2017 that ushered in the Sino-Swiss Year of Tourism, Switzerland has been chosen as the guest country of honor of the World Winter Sports (Beijing) Expo 2017 (WWSE). Under the initiative of Switzerland Tourism and with the support of Switzerland Global Enterprise and the Embassy of Switzerland in China, it will be represented by 28 Swiss institutions and companies in winter tourism and winter sports in a 300-square-meter chalet-style pavilion. In addition to the partners’ units, the Swiss pavilion will entice visitors with an interactive area and authentic Swiss après-skis (post-skiing social activities) in a cozy wooden lounge.

The 2017 World Winter Sports Expo (WWSE) in Beijing, themed “Leading the Way,” includes an exhibition, keynote speeches, summit forums, and a number of winter sports-related activities. Join more than 400 exhibitors, 20,000 sports industry professionals, 500 media partners, and 125,000 visitors from around the world at this special event.

The University of Art and Design Lausanne (ECAL) ranks among the top 10 design institutions in the world by Business Week and fifth in the Dezeen Hot List. In September, it will deliver for the first time executive courses in collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI). A series of four creative and innovative courses will be introduced to the Hong Kong public: Light in Photography, Augmented Reality, Modular Typeface, and Watch Design. Hallo, a solo performance by acclaimed Swiss choreographer and physical actor Martin Zimmermann, incorporates elements of mime, dance, circus, and tragicomedy. The artist uses his unique brand of humor to portray his inner life through whimsical characters. In Hallo, Zimmermann’s tragicomic figure takes on diverse forms. What initially appears to be a static framework manifests into a dynamic, magical experience embracing space and blurring borders between fiction and reality. immerman will take part in a post-performance dialogue in English on September 8. 20

Mario Botta, an internationally renowned Swiss architect who designed the Tsinghua Art Museum in Beijing, presents an overview of his most significant works. Originally known for his family houses in Ticino, Switzerland, his illustrious portfolio includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (USA), the Évry Cathedral (France), Tinguely Museum in Basel (Switzerland), Kyobo Tower and Leeum Museum in Seoul (South Korea), and luxury hotel Twelve in Shanghai (China). The exhibition, organized by the Tsinghua Art Museum in ei ing, is the architect’s first ma or presentation in China. Making its fifth tour this year, the China Women’s Film Festival (CWFF) focuses on film and women’s issues in China. It is a platform for filmmakers to screen films that present a feminist perspective, thus advancing gender equality. Swiss film The Other Half of the Sky (2016) explores the huge transformation of China from the perspectives of four powerful businesswomen: Yang Lan, Dong Mingzhu, Zhang Lan, and Zhou Yi. How were their careers built? What are the social and economic contexts in which they operate? The film takes an intense and unique look at the mentalities of female executives, and explores the huge transformation taking place in China today.

Echo Rotberg, a six-member alphorn ensemble and veteran European tourers, is coming to China to share the warm sounds of the alphorn, accordion, and yodeling. The alphorn is a wooden wind instrument featuring a long and conical bore and wooden cupshaped mouthpiece. It was originally used by shepherds to communicate with each other across vast mountain valleys. To mark the 2017 Sino-Swiss Year of Tourism and honor both countries’ respective animal mascots, the Embassy of Switzerland in China has teamed up with the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing to produce four pairs of St. Bernard and panda statues.

Kalo- ele offers a nimble alliance of rhythms and melodies, bringing this season’s most gripping set of Swiss music with a West African pulse. Kalo- ele (literally moonlight in ambara, lingua franca of Mali) is a cross-cultural band composed of Ivorian balafon (West African wooden xylophone) master Aly Ke ta, Swiss clarinetist an alega r nnimann, and Swiss drummer Lucas iggli. oth Swiss musicians were born in Cameroon and influenced in their youth by West African music. Their collaboration with Ke ta provides a savory mix of traditional African repertoire and Western azz.

Founded in 2003 as an ad hoc seasonal orchestra, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (LFO) is an ensemble of internationally acclaimed soloists, chamber musicians, music teachers, and members of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Filarmonica della Scala. In October, the LFO will stage two concerts in Beijing under the baton of renowned music director and conductor, Riccardo Chailly. From Strauss’ “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” and “Death and Transfiguration to eethoven’s “Egmont Overture” and Strawinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” the orchestra promises to deliver an entertaining show rich in virtuosity.

Yannick Barman returns to China after his highly acclaimed debut performances at Lab 47 (Beijing) and the Chronus Art Center (Shanghai) last year. Barman has established a reputation as a versatile crossover artist. Starting out as a classical jazz musician, he took an interest in electronic music early in his career and thereafter incorporated digital influences into his sounds. Foofwa Imobilité will illuminate China with his famous piece “Histoires Condansées”, which charts the history of dance through a one-man lecture-performance. Starting with a glimpse of pre-20th century dance, he then outlines the important aspects that shaped the artform over time. A dancer with the Stuttgart Ballet and Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Foofwa started his career as a choreographer in 1998 in New York before founding the Neopost Foofwa Company in Geneva in 2000.

“unREAL” attempts to confront the digital present through technological intervention to critically examine its current state and alternative prospects. Featuring works by 23 international artists, the exhibition sheds light on reality as a binary construction of time-space and its media-inscribed materiality. By imagining new temporal-spatial modalities and through inventing radical sensorial experiences, the works reveal that the politics of the real no longer lie in the struggle against social disparity. Instead it alludes to whom has ownership of this new reality constructed in the materiality of bits and bytes and in the algorithmic power of the digital.

“Bijoux en jeu” exhibits more than 200 works from 37 predominantly Swiss creators between 1970 and 2013 from the Swiss Confederation and the Musée de design et d’art appliqué contemporain (MUDAC) jewelry collections. The exhibition incorporates five themes: telling, adorning, using, shaping, and making. Jewels are assembled in categories illustrating their function, shape, material, and technique. ‘Interval in Space’ from Scuol to Hong Kong 中瑞群展：《于空间之间： 从施库尔到香港》

“Interval in Space” is an artistic exchange between 10 artists from Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Austria. Participating Swiss artists include Beat Feller, Zilla Leutenegger, Boris Rebetez, and Matthias Liechti whose exhibition “I Cannot See” was held in 2016 at V Space in Shanghai. The exhibition resonates with classical and social sculptures, narrative strategies, and conceptual perception. While artists from Switzerland and Austria tend to assume a classical understanding of volume, space, and sculpture, Hong Kong artists examine situations in space using everyday materials.

Founded in 1969, the Biel Solothurn Symphony Orchestra has been conducted by Kaspar Zehnder since 2012. They are proud to perform pieces by Franz Lehár, Johann Strauss II, Paul Lincke, Gioachino Rossini, acques ffenbach, and Robert Stolz. Among the many highlights of the program are “The William Tell Overture” by Rossini and “Concerto for Alphorn” performed by Daniel Schnyder, a Swiss saxophonist and composer based in New York, and soloist Elena Burki.

With its striking and responsive design, the website provides an overview of the vibrant performing arts scene in Switzerland. It serves as a platform for the international promotion of more than 80 institutional and independent Swiss theatre and dance companies, all of which undertake international tours on a regular basis and receive financial support from ro Helvetia. The new site also includes a cultural agenda and an interactive menu containing all the dates and locations of premieres, festivals, and special events. Regular news posts provide the latest information on current theatre and dance-related topics and events.
