elcome to the Fall issue of Essential Naples—a quarterly lifestyle publication in Southwest Florida for health-minded locals who desire credible information on holistic health and well-being trends. If this is the first time you’re picking us up, you’ll find our coverage is 100% local with expert content that interests both Naples residents and professional holistic practitioners. Essential Naples focuses on four essential lifestyle pillars: Health, Relationships, Finance, and Purpose. In each issue, you’ll find articles on wide-ranging topics from local experts in each of these areas who have dug up infinite nuggets of wisdom to share with all of us. Please connect with them as they make this complimentary magazine possible. I’m thrilled to announce I’ve launched my own internet radio show this summer as part of the Transformation Talk Radio (TTR) network. TTR is a global positive talk radio and media network that I am honored to be collaborating with, and I’ll be featuring many of our own Essential Naples writers and local practitioners on my show whose voices need to be heard. My show will be weekly on Thursdays at 11 am. Visit www.essentialnaples.com to sign up for notifications to discover show topics and the fascinating guests I’ll be interviewing. TTR is an internationally syndicated show and broadcast globally on hundreds of AM/FM/ digital radio stations. I’m so excited to be broadening our audience globally. I had the wonderful opportunity to present at FreedomFest 2021 in Rapid City, SD, in July. It was an amazing event focusing on health freedom, financial freedom, political freedom, and the ability to express free thought and opinions on many levels. I got to meet many thought leaders in longevity medicine and preserving freedoms. I presented on “The New Psychology of Aging: Living Younger” and it was standing room only in my conference room. If you want to catch my presentation, it’s up on www.drdianehayden.com. You’ll learn about my three Living Younger pillars and discover that aging is not inevitable and can actually be reversed! There are incredible studies being published now about the ability to reverse aging in humans through gene therapy, epigenetic cell reprogramming, inexpensive stem cell treatment, and regenerative medicine techniques like NAD supplementation. In fact, we have two regenerative medicine articles in this issue that you don’t want to miss. Dr. Chad Prodromos writes about the incredible possibilities with stem cell treatment and Dr. Eduardo Maristany discusses how NAD supplementation can help us all live younger. It’s truly an amazing time to be alive! Wishing you health and happiness,

Precision Robotics Muscular Therapy

N

ew to Naples! Precision Robotics Muscular Therapy will be opening in Naples Fall 2021. This non-invasive muscular technology relieves tension in muscles, alleviating pressure and pain. The patented robotic arm applies gentle, static pressure to a specific area of a muscle, allowing the tissue to relax and lengthen back to its normal state, correcting imbalances. As this happens, it alleviates tension on bone structure and nerves, dramatically increasing mobility and decreasing pain. Benefits are achieved through intellectual manipulation, using a robotic arm and a computer to apply precise pressure to connective tissues, returning the tissues to their normal state by lengthening fibers, releasing waste build-up, and softening muscles. This releases internal muscle stress, restores normal blood flow, and promotes healing. Improvements in strength, flexibility, and posture are seen as well. This revolutionary method of treating injuries and relieving aches and pains can dramatically improve athletic performance—its therapeutic value cannot be overstated. Athletes benefit from muscular therapy by gaining increased flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, and better retention of muscular development. Golfers, runners, and tennis players, among others, experience great benefits. Both new and old injuries can be treated and held at bay while allowing you to continue to play.

Precision Robotics Muscular Therapy can help almost everyone as it corrects posture, relieves tension, improves sleep, promotes a general feeling of well-being, and relieves the minor aches and pains that we all seem to acquire in modern day life. The Cycle of Change

By Betsy Opyt, RD, LD/N, CDE, RYT

A

s a woman after age 40, your life isn’t falling apart—it’s falling into place. Women can thrive at every life stage and celebrate our ever-changing bodies. It’s time to redirect the conversation from MENopause to WOMANpause— and understand this is the time to upgrade your health, listen to your body, and focus first on YOU and your needs.

When Your Flow Goes

P

A

void sugar and alcohol: A major contributor to the “menopause middle,” that stubborn fat around the mid-section, is inflammation created by sugar and alcohol. These primary hormone endocrine disruptors may cause hot flashes, weight gain, moodiness, and loss of energy and collagen. They are also a stress hormone instigator, often leading us to consume more sugar or alcohol— creating a cycle and exacerbating symptoms.

S

leep and stress: If you are not working on boosting your melatonin, balancing your hormones, or reducing your stress, you are intensifying your menopausal symptoms. An excellent hack is a walk at sunset to help the body register that it is time to rest, to help produce melatonin, and to reduce stress. If you are on electronics late in the evening and not wearing blue blocking glasses you are zapping your melatonin, making it harder to go to sleep.

ausing for a purpose: As women, we often prioritize care for others over ourselves and find ourselves juggling many tasks. This is called “rushing women’s syndrome,” which can leave you fatigued, stressed, and overwhelmed. When this happens, it is time to reflect and find a purpose that brings you happiness. Finding your passion helps you build healthy hormones, release resentment, increase feel-good neurotransmitters, and reduce cortisol. Starting a simple daily meditation practice is one of the best ways to connect with your inner wisdom.

nderstand your hormones and insulin: Hormones and insulin responses can be seriously misunderstood. During menopause, the ovaries hand over the job of making progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone to your adrenal glands, which may already be taxed with daily stress, family, work, and societal factors. The stress of making hormones in addition to already high cortisol stress levels can result in low energy, weight gain, hot flashes, fatigue, headaches, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, if you haven’t worked on changing your diet, your insulin hormone begins to spike and insulin resistance will cause weight gain. The key is to balance stress, manage insulin levels through diet, and have your hormone, insulin, and cortisol levels checked so you know the areas that need focus.

How do you make the shift to empower the change and find your new balance when your flow goes? Find your PAUSE and unify your mind, body, and spirit. ating and exercising: During menopause, it is important to learn to eat for your hormones, avoid insulin-spiking foods, and eat progesterone-building foods. You can also use adaptogens to help reduce stress, maca powder to build testosterone, and naturals herbs such as Pueraria mirifica, which reduces menopausal symptoms. High-intensity workouts can add to stress hormones, so vary your workouts and don’t push your body too hard. Meditation, yoga, and self-healing exercises help restore the body while managing stress. Stop resisting menopause—period. It is time to start thriving, surviving, and finding the balance and beauty in an ever-changing body. •

Why We Use Ozone

zone is a triatomic molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms (O3). It has been successfully used in medicine for its microbiological properties—as a bacteriocidal, virucidal, and fungicidal—for over 100 years. In fact, the first patented ozone generator was invented in 1897 by Nicola Tesla.

as well, by using pure, hospital grade oxygen and a good ozone generator with the capability of creating several different concentrations (gamma or micrograms/cc). Ozone stimulates the body to work better on its own via self-regulation. Oxygen is our most critical element, and ozone increases oxygen utilization. There are many ways to implement ozone therapy: cosmetic, medical, injections, injury, and dental. In Using Ozone Safely A lot of questions arise about ozone as it relates to the dental practice, I use ozone as a bacteriocidal, virucidal, and fungicidal. For example, we do not use pollution and the “ozone alerts” we have become city water in our practice, but rather, we make fresh so familiar with. Because of these “ozone alerts,” ozone daily that runs through all our equipment it is no surprise that we may wonder about the and lines. Dr. Josephine Perez, DMD has been practicing dentistry for 29 years. She is a graduate of Tufts University School of Dentistry in Boston and interned at New Orleans Coast Guard/Navy Base. Her holistic approach to dentistry encompasses each person’s unique and entire (or whole—holistic) state of physical and emotional well-being. The ability to maintain health through preventive measures and treatments of oral disease is her priority. Dr. Perez focuses on the underlying condition, rather than only treating the symptoms. She tests for biocompatibility to find pathways to reduce inflammation and apply biocompatible and biomimetic materials, supplements, essential oils to restore and strengthen the oral cavity and ultimately, the whole body. After decades of restoring and transforming smiles, Dr. Perez has integrated total wellness into her oral health enhancement practice—a revolutionary style of dentistry.

as statins, beta-blockers, barbiturates, some antibiotics, and muscle relaxants. There are also some genetic predispositions that may interfere with a person’s oxygen utilization, as well as their predisposition to cavities or periodontal disease. Your starting point is genetically predetermined; your rate of decay is modifiable. This is the reason I discuss the “why?” with patients. What led us to our condition in the first place? Sometimes finding the “why” takes a little longer—but don’t give up! If we control the terrain, so to speak, even if there is a genetic predisposition to dental issues and diminished oxygen utilization, the body is prepped and can manage those issues. Unfortunately, some patients want a quick and easy fix. It is usually these “Band-Aids” that end up costing more time, money, and most importantly, health. Thanks to ozone, I have an extra tool in my tool box. I use ozone every day and in every single aspect of dentistry…I call it my SUPERPOWER. Ozone is used for enhanced healing in dentistry in a variety of ways: • initial “mouthwash” prior to any treatment • performing cleanings • extractions and periodontal surgeries • deep cavities that might otherwise end in root canals • restoring fillings to prevent sensitivities • sensitive teeth • mouth ulcers and canker sores • traumatic lesions As always, work with your medical provider or functional/integrative PCP to see if ozone and its various therapy modalities are right for you. •

Natural Treatments for Knee Joint Pain

ESSENTIAL Naples

By Dr. Richard Hiler, DABCN

FALL 2021

10

“Stem cell joint therapy is important because once the body starts to degenerate, it will not stop. Once degeneration starts, you will lose 4%–6% of cartilage each year.” —Dr. Richard Hiler, DABCN

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 10

O

ne of the common complaints among patients is finding an effective treatment for their knee and joint pain. Standard medicine often only masks pain and symptoms with addictive drugs and corticosteroid injections, and many times unnecessary surgery is recommended. The good news is, there are ways to treat knee and joint pain without using drugs and steroids.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Knee and Joint Pain

When all else has failed, it is important to know that there are other treatment options available. One such option is hyaluronic acid injections—a knee and joint pain treatment often used when other options, such as the use of pain relievers, have been proven ineffective. Hyaluronic acid molecules serve as a lubricant and shock absorber within your joints. It’s already found naturally within the body, although large amounts are often broken down and lost in individuals with osteoarthritis. Your body, and more specifically your joints, need hyaluronic acid for optimal functionality. If your joints do not have enough of it, the absence of an effective shock absorber means you can expect to experience regular stiffness and joint pain. Hyaluronic acid in the form

of a solution or gel is injected in the same way a normal shot would be, and is injected directly into the knee joint. In an effort to gauge their efficacy, injections are generally given one week apart. In most cases, you will receive a series of shots over a two- to five-week period. The overall effectiveness of these injections varies from patient to patient, so it is difficult to say exactly how well this particular knee and joint pain treatment will work for you. Based on past studies and the wide use of the method, however, most patients find that these injections work wonders to significantly reduce pain and stiffness within their joints.

Stem Cell Allograft Therapy

Stem cell allograft therapy is a minimally invasive way to heal the underlying causes of your knee pain, rather than treating the pain alone. It can slow down degenerative conditions and, in some cases, help new tissue grow. At Feel Amazing Institute, we use stem cells sourced from the umbilical cord from healthy mothers and are screened in FDA-approved labs before being sent out to practices like ours. Stem cell therapy includes injections into the affected joints. Each stem cell is a “blank slate” that can emulate others in the vicinity, making it

10/6/21 9:12 AM

possible to regrow and heal damaged tissues that cannot regenerate on their own. The discomfort is minimal and there is little recovery time involved. Stem cell joint therapy is important because once the body starts to degenerate, it will not stop. It is estimated that once degeneration starts, you will continue to lose 4% to 6% of the cartilage each year until it is gone and results in bone on bone (approximately 15 to 25 years) unless it is regenerated.

ore than 50 million Americans are prescribed medication for acid reflux or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). When acid reflux begins, the first place many people look for relief are the readily available, over-the-counter antacids such as Tums and Rolaids. When those remedies no longer seem to work, patients may turn to medications such as proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs). But the next time your acid reflux is acting up and you reach for your medication, I hope you think twice. At first PPIs seem like a good choice, as they can easily relieve most symptoms. Proton-pump inhibitors are medications for constant acid reflux (referred to as GERD), peptic ulcer disease, and non-ulcer indigestion. Over the last several decades, PPIs have been one of the most widely prescribed drugs. However, are they truly safe and effective treatment options? The range of PPIs available consist of both overthe-counter and prescription options: • Omeprazole (Prilosec) • Esomeprazole (Nexium) • Lansoprazole (Prevacid) • Rabeprazole (AcipHex) • Pantoprazole (Protonix)

How Do PPIs Work?

PPIs work by reducing stomach acid, thereby reducing acid reflux into the esophagus and relieving heartburn symptoms. Short-term use of PPIs may not be an issue—based on an observational study, the risk of developing diabetes using PPIs

for up to two years increases by 5%. PPIs used for more than two years, however, showed a marked increase in risk of 26%. Clearly, limiting the use of the medication to the short term is likely to reduce the risk of diabetes. Long-term use of PPIs has been associated with vitamin B12 and zinc deficiency. Metformin, a widely prescribed drug for diabetes and prediabetes, is also known to inhibit the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider whether the combination of drugs increases the probability of absorption issues: data suggest that PPI users have a 40% higher risk of magnesium deficiency. After discontinuing use of the PPIs, levels appear to normalize within a couple of weeks; however, deficiency occurred again after restarting the medication. Long-term and/or high-dose users may be at risk of a 41% reduction in calcium absorption, increasing fractures to the hip, spine, and wrist. Additionally, in a 2016–2017 study of omeprazole users in Brazil, it was found that there was a 70.6% progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Couple this with the effects of diabetes and it may exacerbate kidney issues. Alarmingly, the risk of death increases with the amount of time a person is taking PPIs. It appears that the part of our cells, lysosomes, cannot function properly when taking PPIs. Lysosomes function in the following ways: • they break down and digest carbs, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids; • repair cell membrane; and • respond against foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria.

If lysosomes are not functioning correctly, your digestive tract and immune system can become damaged and weakened over time.

First, it is important to get the proper diagnosis. Diabetic gastroparesis is a condition that can develop in which chronically high glucose levels damage blood vessels supplying nerves and organs with nutrients and oxygen. In this case, PPIs may not be your best choice. Understanding the cause of your heartburn or GERD can determine the proper course of action. Lifestyle changes will most likely be your best option. What you eat, when you eat, and how much you eat has the greatest impact toward feeling better. Taking steps to heal your digestive tract should also be part of your resolution to improve acid reflux. This may be the most effective and the safest treatment for your long-term health. So, let’s get that balance back in your life! •

Vitamins and minerals are absorbed and processed in the digestive tract. Stomach acid is designed to break down food so nutrients can be delivered. As with everything else in our metabolism it is a balancing act, and the food and beverages we consume have a direct impact on our digestive health. When that goes awry, you can experience stomach pain, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, difficulty in losing weight, joint pain, headaches, and migraines. Stomach acid is also needed to disable bacteria and viruses—when stomach acid is dramatically reduced by PPIs, there is an associated risk for intestinal infections.

t Mystical Bookshop, we thrive because of our customers. The moment our customers enter the store, they are greeted with a positive attitude and a delightful environment. This is called CX—customer experience, or community experience. Everything is designed so that our clientele feel they can express themselves without judgment and with a supportive ear. Whether someone is enjoying abundance, nervous about a new or potential relationship, or facing a crisis, we do our best to offer them a safe place to be themselves.

The Energy

CX is the bedrock in which we do business. We plan everything to the smallest detail so that anyone who comes into our shop receives good energy. Merlin, our friendly French Bulldog, is

usually the first to greet people when they enter the shop. He is so excited to see new and familiar faces and is an instant ice-breaker. Though not everyone loves dogs, most people see and feel his positive energy and it resonates with them.

The Smells

Scent is the next tool in our CX arsenal. It has been said that, of the five senses, scent is the one that evokes the strongest memories. Whether it be sage or palo santo, incense or a candle, the customer is greeted with pleasant smells that typically evoke a positive reaction; scents such as patchouli or frankincense are often associated with earth-conscious people and spiritual rituals. The scents communicate to our customers that they are in a relaxed and spiritual environment and create a foundation for what comes next.

The store itself provides a level of safety and comfort that many people aren’t always accustomed to. Our unique selection of books, jewelry, crystals, and local art make people feel like they’ve found a hidden treasure created just for them. We don’t try to be all things to all people, but our niche selection of spiritual stories and metaphysical references projects a level of depth that also creates diversity. People can come in and, regardless of their spiritual path, almost always find something that resonates with them. We don’t prescribe one spiritual path over another; we simply offer a space to help people find what they seek. If we don’t have it in the store, we help them find their light using our personal experience and unique training. Once we’ve helped our customers in their journey, we express gratitude to them for allowing us to host them as our guests. They are assured they will be greeted like family on their future visits. We are very grateful for our customers. We wouldn’t be successful without them and we believe that appreciation shines through in our attitude, empathy, and emotional availability. •

ravel is once again soaring and more people are making travel plans—surpassing even 2019 pre-pandemic travel. Many people are just plain tired of being cooped up in their homes and feeling disconnected from the outside world, and others believe herd immunity or vaccinations will keep them safe and are willing to take a chance and do what matters to them most—spend time with family.

Keeping Seniors Connected to Family

“Seniors who maintain strong ties with their family have even been shown to outlive those who report less favorable relationships.” —Kerri Johnson

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 16

The importance of family in a senior’s life is immeasurable. Not only does family provide a consistent social network, but evidence also indicates that the relationship a senior keeps with family has a direct impact on their overall quality of life. The connection between family and health is key as we age. When it comes to maintaining a high quality of life, staying connected to friends and family was a primary concern for about 30% of those surveyed in the United States Aging Survey. Perhaps surprisingly, relationships were more important than financial resources for the majority of people surveyed. Seniors who maintain strong ties with their family have even been shown to outlive those who report less favorable relationships. If the potential for a longer life doesn’t make you want to connect with your loved ones, here are a few more reasons why the need for family is so great.

Connection Is the Cure

The significance of family goes deeper than just the senior’s desires—there is a strong correlation between health and the strength of one’s family relationships as well. The benefits associated with elders who report having stronger ties with their families include: • Longer life. Elders who are more socially involved with family members are more likely to live longer than those who remain isolated. This is even true for those in late stages of dementia. Although perhaps not apparent, family presence prolongs their life and improves the quality of their remaining years. • Stronger immune system. Social seniors often have stronger immune systems. This is especially important because older immune systems are typically weaker than younger ones. • Improved mental health. Seniors who are close to their families have better mental health than those who are not. Interacting with family and being reminded that they are loved reduces feelings of depression. • Brain health. More socially engaged seniors typically have a higher level of cognitive function. Those who reported being happy and engaging in social activities were more likely to have an increase in memory and thinking skills; those who indicated the opposite experienced a decline in cognitive abilities.

During this pandemic we continue to face travel issues that impact connecting over longer distances, such as labor shortage throughout hotels, car rentals, and airlines. The reasons behind this shortage are hotly debated. Many employers blame the federal government’s extra $300 per week in unemployment aid, but plenty of hospitality workers who abruptly lost their jobs have moved on to new careers and aren’t coming back. Some employers want to hire new workers at lower wages instead of recalling laid-off employees, said D. Taylor, president of the hotel, gaming, and airport workers union Unite Here. Hotel chains are considering eliminating housekeeping and guest services jobs as well. A recent survey of 4,000 travel and tourism workers showed that many found jobs with higher pay and predictable schedules, and some plan on leaving the industry soon, said Peter Ricci, director of Florida Atlantic University’s hospitality and tourism management program. “It’s time for our industry to wake up and see that’s an important thing. We have a shortage for a reason,” said Cathy Balestriere, general manager of Crane’s Beach House, a boutique hotel in Delray Beach, Florida. As for the airline industry, cancellations and delays could abound. Because of mandated vaccinations for airline staff and flights being canceled due to employees resisting the mandate by not working, some airlines have decided to nix the mandate and continue to follow strict CDC protocol for flights. Finally, once you get to where you are going, how are you going to get around? How Safe, Effective Stem Cell Treatment Is

ESSENTIAL Naples

Revolutionizing Medicine

18 FALL 2021

By Chadwick C. Prodromos, MD

S “Stem cell treatment performs better, and certainly more safely, than pharmaceutical drugs for a great number of disorders.” — Dr. Chadwick C. Prodromos, MD

tem cell treatment (from adults, not embryonic or fetal) is incredibly safe and effective for a wide variety of disorders, including MS, arthritis, autism, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, ALS, spinal cord injury, ED and Peyronie’s disease, chronic kidney disease, spine/back disorders, lupus, retinal disease, lung disease, and many more. The FDA is oriented toward pharmaceutical drugs and, unfortunately, overly restrictive FDA regulations have driven almost all effective stem cell treatment out of the US since the FDA began regulating biologic tissue in 2005. Active clinics include our Prodromos Stem Cell Institute (www.thepsci.com) in Antigua, and others in Panama, The Caymans, Mexico, Colombia, and Costa Rica. Stem cell treatment is actively fostered in Asia—notably in South Korea and China, where groundbreaking research work is being done. Stem cells are occasionally available in small studies in the US that are very restrictive, difficult to get into, and include placebo groups.

Treatment Safety

Stem cell treatment performs better, and certainly more safely, than pharmaceutical drugs

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 18

for a great number of disorders. Because stem cells have been adapted through evolution to heal damaged tissue, they have no toxicity to our bodies, unlike pharmaceutical drugs. The stem cells used are called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Whether your own cells, those derived from donated umbilical cords after full-term Caesarean sections, or from other adults, there is no rejection of the cells. A paper we published in a respected peer-reviewed medical journal last year found no reported serious adverse events from joint injections of MSCs. Additionally, we are currently wrapping up a study that also shows no serious adverse events from intravenous use—the primary mode of stem cell administration. The provider must be qualified and experienced, as adverse events can occur from any treatment if it is improperly performed.

Treatment Methods

We provide intravenous stem cell treatment for MS, autism, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other disorders. Infusion takes under an hour and in most cases the patient feels nothing. Occasionally patients will feel flushed, have

10/6/21 9:12 AM

a brief headache, or experience transient nausea. Patients may arrive the day before treatment and leave the day after, staying at a beautiful resort on the ocean with a reduced patient rate. I administer stem cell injections into the knee, hip, or other joint for severe arthritis; into the back for spine disorders; for ALS, via lumbar puncture by a world-renowned pain specialist; around the eye for retina disease by a highly qualified ophthalmologist; and into the penis by an experienced urologist for ED/Peyronie’s disease.

• Immunomodulation. Stem cells reign in the aberrant immune response that causes the body to attack its own nerve myelin sheaths (MS), knee joint synovium (rheumatoid arthritis), pancreas (diabetes), and other tissues by secreting anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 receptor-antagonist and interleukin-10, which block this destructive abnormal inflammation. And unlike cortisone, Humira, Enbrel, and other immunosuppressive drugs, stem cells do not predispose to infection or have any other side effects.

Stem cells work by two primary mechanisms: • Helping heal damaged tissue. Stem cells secrete growth factors such as transforming growth factor beta, platelet derived growth factor, and others, which are programmed to repair damaged tissue in joints, the nervous system, and wherever else they find them.

Fight the Flu ESSENTIAL Naples

with Scalar Light Pathogenic Cleanse By Thomas J. Paladino

S

FALL 2021

20 “Scalar light is a new and emerging science that is able to identify and correct disease patterns, pathogens, toxins, and so on that are embodied upon photographs.”

calar light is a direct manifestation from God and thus is an eternal, divine energy that, unlike the inferior electromagnetic energy, never experiences entropy or degradation of signal. The sun of our solar system as well as the stars of the universe are the points of origin for scalar light. All energy in the universe initiates as scalar energy; therefore, electromagnetic energy is a derivative of scalar energy. The scalar energy dimension assures perfect intelligence and harmony, whereas the electromagnetic dimension assures imperfect intelligence and disharmony. Scalar light is omnipresent and thus an infinite universe must exist in order to harmonize and complement this infinite, divine energy. Scalar light is the divine mind of God, thereby providing instructions for all spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and physical activity in the universe. Hence, scalar light is responsible for creating and maintaining the infinite universe—it brings order out of chaos.

—Thomas J. Paladino Understanding Scalar Light

and Influenza Viruses

Scalar light is responsible for assembling and maintaining the influenza viruses A, B, C and D; that is, scalar light instructs the atomic and molecular bonds of these viruses to assemble and maintain a specific, physical structure. Conversely, the negation of the scalar light instruction that assembles a virus will result in the microbe being transmuted and fragmented into smaller, harmless elements and proteins. In practice, the Scalar Light Pathogenic Cleanse is able to identify the scalar light signature of the viruses embodied

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 20

upon a photograph of a person, animal, plant, or object; a scalar light signature is then broadcast upon that photograph, negating the scalar light signature or binding energy of the influenza virus. Influenza viruses A, B, and C typically infect people, and although virus D is principally responsible for animal infection, serologic evidence for influenza D virus infection in humans has now been determined. Flu viruses are easily transmitted from person-to-person—a person infected with influenza can spread it to others by coughing, sneezing, speaking, or even breathing. When an infected person exhales, small droplets known as aerosols transmit the influenza viruses to a distance of up to a distance of 6 feet, thus assuring the spread of the viruses. Furthermore, the influenza virus can survive on common surfaces for as long as 24–48 hours, thereby serving to infect others who touch these surfaces. In short, person-to-person transmission of the flu viruses is assured when proper precautions are not taken. Typically, people are infected with the flu virus for 1–4 days before symptoms become apparent. During that time frame, the infected person can unknowingly infect others. While most bouts of influenza last 3–8 days, some people may experience symptoms for a longer period of time.

A Deeper Dive into the Scalar Light Pathogenic Clease

It is crucial to understand that scalar light is non-physical and that non-physical, scalar light instructions serve to negate the molecular bonds of the influenza viruses. Additionally, it must be understood that the Scalar Light Pathogenic

Cleanse operates exclusively within the scalar light dimension, thereby providing perfect scalar light instructions to the quantum, pattern entity embodied upon a photograph of a person, animal, plant, or object. In so doing, the scalar light force fields of the photograph enjoy the benefits of the scalar light sessions. Scalar light is an emerging science that is able to identify and correct disease patterns, pathogens, toxins, and so on that are embodied upon photographs. Specifically, the presence of influenza viruses embodied upon a photograph are eradicated, transmuted, or disassembled by the scalar light instrument. The Scalar Light Pathogenic Cleanse is administered by a custom-built scalar light instrument; therefore, scalar light results are specific and unique to this approach. In other words, though scalar light cannot prevent infection of the influenza viruses, a scalar light instrument is able to identify those viruses embodied upon a photograph and subsequently, the non-physical, scalar light molecular bonds of the viruses are negated by way of Scalar Light Pathogenic Cleanse. All scalar light action operates exclusively within the scalar light dimension, whereas electromagnetic action operates exclusively within the electromagnetic dimension. Thus, the Scalar Light Pathogenic Cleanse can only be understood within the context of scalar light theory. All scalar light sessions are administered to photographs and in so doing, a scalar light instrument will influence the scalar light force fields embodied upon the photograph. A photograph of a person is embodied with the real-time scalar light signature that is identical to their spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and physical state of being, and is therefore the scalar energy copy of a person’s scalar energy pattern body. •

“OG” Plant Breeding + Genetic Selection and Development Calabazas (pumpkins and other varietals of squash) are among the oldest cultivated foods in the Americas. Predating corn and tomatoes, archeologists have documented seeds from domesticated pumpkins/squash in the highlands of Oaxaca, Mexico, dating back to 4500 B.C. As with the better-known story of corn, our modern pumpkins (and cousins) started off humbly with a small, slightly bitter, dense fleshy fruit (technically not a vegetable) that was nutritious and kept well over the cold winter months. What would the ancient indigenous Meso-Americans, who first cultivated these “OG” (original) calabazas, think if they could see the 2000+ pound monsters of today’s pumpkin-growing competitions? What the OG cultivators of domesticated plants were doing several millennia ago, Row 7 is doing similarly today. It starts with cross pollination, sexing flowers, and selecting desired traits. Without diving too deep into taxonomy, botany, and genetics, we simply need to understand that two flowering plants of the same botanical species can be cross pollinated to form a hybrid (this can even happen randomly in nature). As opposed to modern GMOs (which often involves work at the cellular level, splicing unrelated cross species DNA to form a new organism), this form of breeding is done in the most fundamental of ways. The process begins by identifying two related subspecies with the basic traits you’re looking for, then identifying the male and female flowers (some species will also produce hermaphroditic flowers, which you can disregard for cross breeding). A stamen presents on the male flowers and looks basically how you might imagine the male sex part of a flower to look. On the female flowers, you will find a pistil (containing the ovaries of the flower), which appears as a small, round bulb in the center of the flower. Once you’re done playing matchmaker and your guy and gal flowers on the target plants are in full bloom, you will simply help them to connect in that special way—turn on the soft jazz, light some candles, and proceed; cut the male flower about 2” down the stem and very gently insert the stamen into the center of female flower until it makes contact with the pistil. Gently rub it around until you’re sure its pollen has covered the female flower’s pistil. Repeat with multiple pairs.

“Flavor = Nutrition. Good health by way of good eating. Think: Potatoes so creamy you don’t need butter. A squash so packed with flavor, it doesn’t require maple syrup to make it delicious. And, it turns out, when you select for flavor, you’re most likely selecting for nutrition, too. Flavor and aroma compounds—the same ones that make tomatoes so mouthwatering— often derive from essential nutrients. It’s nature’s way of telling us what we should be eating.”

range from the actual genes of the seeds, soil health, sustainability, and nutrition to perception of the value of vegetables (he pioneered vegetable-forward cuisine and the elimination of food waste in fine dining), food security, and, of course, flavor. Chef Barber addresses the team daily with something educational and inspiring, and that fall day in 2014 did not disappoint as he explained to us how he; Jack Algier, farm manager for Stone Barn Farms; and Michael Mazourek, plant breeder and scientist from Cornell University had finally achieved success on the intensely flavorful and sweet honeynut squash. Mazourek, who had already been working on this hybrid squash, was on a tour of the farm and kitchen at Blue Hill in 2009. Chef Dan Barber grabbed a butternut squash and said to Mazourek, “If you’re such a good breeder, why don’t you make this thing taste good? Why don’t you shrink the thing?!” The challenge resulted in a smaller squash that was deliberately bred for flavor and nutrition first, rather than for putting yield/profits above all else. For Chef Barber this was not a new concept, as he had already been working with scientists from the University of Washington in the development of a wheat with similar qualities. Eventually patented as Barber Wheat, it has concentrated flavor/nutrition, the ability to be grown in a way that preserves healthy soil, and produces high enough yield ratios for farmers to be interested. In 2013, just one year before my inside access, sneak taste, Barber presented the honeynut at the G9 gastro-summit—an exclusive gathering of the world’s elite chefs. Containing A and B vitamins, potassium, zinc, three times the amount of beta-carotene as its ancestor (the butternut squash), and being intensely delicious, this little gem debuted as a rockstar—the chefs’ response was incredible! In 2015, seeds for production of the honeynut became available to farmers across the northeast and today, you can find farms throughout the U.S. (including SWFL) growing the delicious and amazing honeynut squash. Honeynuts are readily available to consumers in many locations, from farmers’ markets to markets such as Whole Foods, Costco, Blue Apron, etc.—a feat in large part due the work of Barber and Mazourek, who helped found Row 7 Seed Co., a new “hybrid-minded” seed company that is pioneering the future of food security in a manner that is both sustainable and quite flavorsome.

“The first time I tasted Chef David Robbins version of the traditional pumpkin pie, my mind was blown! I ordered three for my holiday parties!” —Dr. Diane Hayden

When these flowers develop into matured fruit, you now have a new genetic hybrid. Find the fruits that contain the strongest of the target traits, and save and grow these seeds. Next, look for the fruits from this new plant that have the most pronounced of the target characteristics, and again save and grow these seeds. Repeating this process over several generations will cause these desired traits, such as size, color, drought/heat tolerance, flavor and nutrient profiles, etc., to become dominant. With the sophistication, finesse, and efficiency of modern science, what might have taken a lifetime to do with something like the honeynut a hundred years ago, Row 7 is now accomplishing in less than a decade. Row 7, the “hybrid child” of Barber (chef) and Mazourek (scientist), connects seed breeders, farmers, chefs, consumers, and many others in the farm-to-table community with the goal of growing better food for a better future. Just as much as Row 7 strives to breed better-tasting food, they breed for nutritional properties. They know that healthy soil, biodiversity, ecological sustainability, nutritious and diverse diets, and food security can and should be interconnected.

Don’t F*ck with the Pumpkin Pie— A Reimagining of a Classic

The etymology of “pumpkin” starts with “pepon,” Greek for large melon. It later changed with the French to “pompon,” then with the English to “pumpion,” and eventually to the modern English word “pumpkin.” Round orange pumpkins and myriad culinary derivatives are an iconic part of autumn rituals among many cultures around the world. In fact, I’m a sucker for a pumpkin spice latte, and autumn flavors/seasonal ingredients are my favorite to work with as a chef. ”Don’t f*ck with the pumpkin pie…” My words, ten years ago, jokingly instructing my pastry chef. In many ways, I consider myself to be forward-thinking, dynamic chef rooted with a strong knowledge and appreciation for fundamentals and the classics. When prepping for a Thanksgiving brunch of 800 people, there are certain expectations. Nearly every dessert, classic or nouveau, we present in a mini/individual format with some type of twist. We find that guests enjoy a balance of the familiar/approachable with the “wow/flash!” of something new. But what about the pumpkin pie? Certainly the version of this dessert we know and love was

not there at Plymouth in 1621; most likely it was a quite healthy/simple dish of whole roasted or stewed pumpkin (and other similar squash varietals) with maple syrup, herbs, and spices. After another 150 years or so of baked sweets loosely related to what we know as “pumpkin pie,” we find in 1796 the first published record of a recipe for an egg/dairy based pumpkin custard flavored w/cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices baked in a flour crust. This became the “Classic American Pumpkin Pie” that we know and love. It so happens that this style of classic pumpkin pie, if executed really well, is one of my favorite desserts; hence, my instructions to leave the pumpkin pies alone and make the simple classic of spiced pumpkin custard baked in a flaky buttery crust.

A New Take on the Classic

This all leads us to today, to Chef Dan Barber, Row 7, the honeynut squash, and their influence on me. I’m not saying anything against a classic pumpkin pie done right, its taste, and its role in our culture and family traditions. I will always enjoy that version of the pie, but I truly believe there is room to reimagine another version. We face so many new realizations about the many challenges to our food systems, our global ecology, our personal food choices and health, and the need for advancements like the story of the honeynut. Having people like Barber and Mazourek leading the way to new foods that are ecologically and economically sustainable/regenerative, accessible, nutritious, and delicious keeps my hope and inspiration going, and it’s that inspiration that gives way to “pumpkin pie v.2.” Like any dessert that I would make, it starts with sound/thoughtful/deliberate technique; a high standard for top quality, holistically sustainable ingredients; and an unabashed use of flavor. Too often, food with “healthy ingredients” gets the bad rep of not tasting good, and that’s just wrong—it can and should taste great. Let’s not forget, it’s a dessert…a pie…inherently made with a proper amount of sugars and fats. However, the v.2 is made with the superstar descendant of those first humble calabazas—the honeynut. It’s a dessert that is 100% plant based + gluten free + nutritionally dense + sustainable; it’s a dessert that is delicious and eats as balanced, refined, and richly satisfying as anything you’d find in the world’s best kitchens.

Cinnamon + nutmeg + all spice + star anise Freshly ground; use to taste

Crust

1.5–2 quarts fine almond flour 2 cups virgin coconut oil

2 cups coarse demerara or raw cane sugar 1.5 teaspoons sea salt EQUIPMENT Vitamix blender 10” x 3” round springform pan Microplane, extra fine Electric spice mill Medium sauce pan Baking sheet

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 29

• Soak cashews in water and refrigerate overnight • When ready to use, drain and rinse, then warm to 90–100°F degrees • On med-low heat, reduce by half: carrot juice + 1 cup demerara sugar + grated ginger • Wash honeynut squash and cut in half to remove seeds (can be dried and reserved for future use) • Roast unseasoned halved squash at 300°F for 60–90 minutes until very caramelized and soft (honeynut have tender skin that doesn’t have to be removed, but peel before roasting if desired) • Cool and cut into medium size chunks

Vitamix Time!

• Cashews and 8 oz of coconut oil go into the Vitamix; blend as smooth as you can • Final product should be a light off-white color and creamy Remove finished mixture, set aside (Pro Tip: If having trouble getting the cashews to blend, add 2–4 oz hot water and use the plunger accessory to move the mixture around | don’t be concerned if the mixture gets very hot in this process, this is normal.) • Next, in the Vitamix, add the roasted honeynut squash, reduced carrot juice syrup, 4 oz coconut oil, maple sugar, thyme, ground spices, and salt; blend as smooth as you can • In a mixing bowl, combine the cashew and squash mixtures together until fully incorporated • Set aside at room temp

Crust

• Toast the dry almond flour on a baking sheet at 300°F degrees (stirring occasionally) until golden brown; approximately 15–25 minutes • In a bowl, mix the almond flour and remaining crust ingredients; should resemble the texture of moist sand when done • In the spring form pan, place half the crust mixture in the center • Using a small offset spatula (or your hands), evenly spread the mixture across the bottom of the springform pan • Loosely drop the remaining crust mixture around the inside border of the pan, using a small off-set spatula (or your hands), mold the mixture evenly to form the sides of the pie (Pro Tip: Intermittently dip your fingers or spatula in cold water to help the mixture from sticking to you.) • Freeze the spring form pan with the crust mixture for approximately 30–60 minutes until very firm • After freezing, using a torch, very gently warm the outside and bottom of the springform pan; release the latch on the outside of the pan and remove the crust from the bottom plate of the pan • Place onto a 10” cardboard cake round and put back into fridge or freezer until filling mixture is ready

Assemble + Finish

• Pour the room-temp filling mixture into the chilled, un-molded crust; using offset spatula, evenly move filling mixture around and smooth over surface • Place assembled pie into fridge or freezer for 4–6 hours or overnight until filling is set and firm • Slice at approximately same temp as your fridge and enjoy! (Pro Tip: Temperature of the fats in the cashews and coconut oil are critical; too cold = difficult to work with | too hot = a mess.)

Fountain of Youth By Eduardo Maristany, MD

M

any adults spend a lot of time and money trying to look younger—topical creams, makeup, hairstyles, facial peels, facial CO2 lasers, and, of course, enhancements like fillers, Botox, and plastic surgery. We exercise like crazy to keep our physiques in shape. We diet. We drink green smoothies. Whatever it takes. As much as this may work on the outside, on the inside your body is still aging. You may still feel groggy or have a general lack of energy. You may experience chronic headaches and joint pain or inflammation. You may gain weight and feel like you can’t get that extra two inches off your waist no matter what you do. Your blood pressure and

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 30

cholesterol and sugar levels may be rising. Most diseases, in fact, are diseases of aging; therefore, as you age, by definition you have a higher risk for disease. Researchers are developing solutions to stall nature. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, is a naturally occurring cofactor/coenzyme derived from Vitamin B3 (niacin, which is present in all living cells) and a nucleotide (which is what your DNA is made of). NAD+ starts to diminish as we age, so research has focused on the impact of reintroducing NAD+ to the body. Many doctors of functional medicine are increasingly optimistic that we can turn the clock around using the right therapies.

Reversing the Age of Cells

FALL 2021

32

“Science shows that the fountain of youth isn’t found in a mythical spring, rather potentially as NAD+ within our own bodies.” —Dr. Eduardo Maristany, MD

Harvard genetics professor Dr. David Sinclair and a team of 30 scientists are working around the clock to understand how to reverse disease, not just slow it down. And here’s the kicker—they have actually figured it out. Studies have shown how to delay aging significantly, and in some cases, how to actually reverse the age of cells. Researchers take a menopausal female mouse, based on the quality of its eggs, and confirm she is infertile. Then, they give this mouse an NAD+ precursor molecule called NMN and watch as her biologic age is reversed to a more youthful state, as measured on nine metrics. Later, a retest of the quality of her eggs shows them to be fertile; she then becomes pregnant and has children. These results have been replicated in several mice. Quite simply, this is groundbreaking research. Not only could researchers reverse a menopausal, infertile mouse into a youthful, fertile one, but researchers could double the lifespan of a laboratory mouse from two years to four or five years. If they can double the lifespan of a mouse, could they eventually double the lifespan of humans? Our current lifespan is about 81 years for women and 77 years for men, but Sinclair feels that with safe human doses, there is no reason humans can’t live to be 115 years old. Additionally, Sinclair found that mice had a longer lifespan and health span (years in a healthy state), and that they did not get sick and die until the very end of their lives. In other words, increasing lifespan did not come with more disease, but actually less disease and a quick death. If this could translate to humans, it sounds like the perfect situation for longevity—a nice, long retirement and then a quick death. Sign me up! Sinclair’s book, Lifespan: Why We Age—and Why We Don’t Have To, is a bestseller. This is absolutely revolutionary research, and it’s happening right now.

Impact on Sleep

When you sleep, you have REM and deep sleep. REM is the dream part of sleep that typically occurs in the early morning hours right before you wake up, which is why you wake up from dreams so much in the morning. This type of REM sleep is essential for your mental health and cognition. If you consistently lack REM sleep, there can serious consequences to your mental and emotional health. You need at least one hour of REM sleep each night. Deep sleep occurs in the earlier part of the night, right when you go to bed. It’s mostly responsible for your body’s regeneration and

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 32

without it, you will feel unrested and have lower heart rate variability, or HRV, scores. High HRV scores, meaning heart rate goes up and down quickly in response to stress, are preferred. We need about one hour of deep sleep a night; unfortunately, many people are in light sleep most of the night. Deep sleep and REM sleep components are essential to our well-being, and many of us don’t realize we may not be getting enough of these types of sleep. My patients who use NAD+ regularly consistently experience about a 30% increase in deep sleep as measured by sleep trackers like the Fitbit or Oura ring. I personally use an Oura ring every night. Prior to NAD+ oral therapy, I would get an average of 40–50 minutes of deep sleep nightly. Now, I am clocking an average of 80 minutes a night. This increase is vital, as quality of sleep is significantly improved and we awaken refreshed and ready to conquer the day.

Benefits of NAD+

The benefits of NAD+ are far-reaching within the human body and can impact an individual’s: • Brain: Potentially slows cognitive decline and promotes healthy brain function, mental clarity, higher concentration levels and memory function. Studies in mice showed these results. Now, studies are underway involving humans with Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. • Mental health: Potentially helps control depression, anxiety and mood disorders. Research has shown that people with critically low levels of NAD+ are at a higher risk for developing problems related to addiction, anxiety, and other mental disorders. • Energy: Boosts energy levels and fights chronic fatigue. NAD+ inserts itself directly into the Kreb’s cycle, or the energy cycle in the mitochondria of your cells that create energy. As we age, our natural levels of NAD+ decline, explaining why fatigue is the primary complaint among older adults. • Metabolism: Gives a jolt to metabolism, which burns fat and helps the body regulate blood sugar levels. In studies, diabetic and obese rats showed improvements in their metabolism with NAD+ supplementation. • Rejuvenation: Allows cells to regenerate and repair, healing the body as it recovers from injuries and rigorous exercise. NAD+ is a sirtuin activator, and a very strong one at that. These sirtuin genes have the ability to repair cells and regress them to a more youthful state.

here will you be at age 65? Dependent or independent? Strong, healthy, and fit or struggling with disease? The difference lies in the way you use your mind. Ninety-five percent of people just do the tasks that are required of them. They have no initiative or courage to start new things (that includes new careers, new relationships, or new lifestyles). Until you have learned that YOU are the master of your fate, you will never attain full success. What you are going to be six months or a year from now depends upon what you think today. So, make your choice. Are you going to realize that your environment, your success, and your happiness are all of your own making? The majority of those who experience failures in life are simply the victims of their mental defeats. Their conviction that they can’t be as successful as others results in complacency and not even trying to succeed. The reason why millions of people are plodding along in mediocrity is because they lack confidence in themselves. Are you taking active control of your own thoughts? Are you imagining only the things that you want to accomplish or do or have? Are you thinking healthy thoughts, happy thoughts, and successful thoughts? Or are you constantly worrying about things that may never happen? It is estimated that we only use 10% of our mental power. Imagine what we could do if we doubled or tripled that—and really imagine what we could do if we could tap into accessing 100%!

The power to be what you want to be, to accomplish any goal, to attain what you dream of, resides within you. This power is yours to bring forth and put to work. But before you can learn how to use it, you must realize that you possess this power. Most of us walk through life having no idea we hold the key. The reason most of us don’t achieve success in life is because we are content to live a life of complacency. The most important thing to focus on with your conscious mind is to center your thoughts on what you want and shut the door on every suggestion of fear or lack. When you achieve control of your mind, you will attain health, success, and happiness. Think of a time when you were successful at something—what were your thoughts, what was your mindset? I bet you felt unstoppable. Now think of a time when you failed. What was the difference? We can do only what we think we can do. We can be only what we think we can be. We can have only what we think we can have. What we do, what we are, and what we have all depend on what we think.

33 FALL 2021

There are two primary ways to receive NAD+ treatments: • IV therapy: This treatment option has grown in popularity because vitamins, minerals, and nutrients are introduced directly into a patient’s bloodstream. This allows for quick absorption and immediate impacts. IV therapies are conducted in a doctor’s office or medical clinic. • Oral supplements: Just like a multivitamin or supplement, taking NAD+, NMN, or NR in tablet or powder form introduces the treatment through an individual’s digestive system. Patients can take oral supplements daily from their home. Is this the fountain of youth? It’s possibly the closest thing we’ve ever discovered. All of us want to look younger, but we should be focused on living longer, healthy and pain-free lives. Science shows that the fountain of youth isn’t found in a mythical spring, rather potentially as NAD+ within our own bodies. Some of us just need a little extra as our levels decrease with age. As always, please consult with your physician prior to making any substantial lifestyle, health, or nutritional changes. •

NAD+ decreases as you age in a linear fashion. NAD+ is also what inserts itself three times into the Kreb’s cycle, which is the energy cycle of your cells. As you age, you make less NAD+ and cannot make enough energy. What if we figured out the ultimate biohack to increase our energy levels? What if the key is NAD+, and how do we increase this as humans? There is a lot of data on oral forms of NAD+ precursors like NR and NMN that can be taken orally. Studies have shown a significant increase in blood NAD+ levels after just a few hours. So far, there are no toxicities noted in human trials using these molecules. NAD+ is already being referenced as the body’s anti-aging molecule. As a supplement, NAD+ does not need FDA approval, so it’s available today to the general public.

f you haven’t heard about delta-8 THC yet, you will soon—it is all the rage right now! Products containing delta-8 THC haven’t been on the market for very long, but in the last six months they have been the most requested products at our two Your CBD Stores in Collier County.

What Is Delta-8 THC?

The 2018 Farm Bill, a federal act passed by Congress, legalized hemp in the United States. That act defines hemp as “All derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent.” This bill does not specify delta-8 THC; therefore, there is no limitation on the amount of delta-8 THC produced from the hemp plant. Delta-8 THC is being produced in

high amounts compared to the legal limit of .3% delta-9 THC. Few state laws specifically address delta-8 THC at this time, and there are only 11 states where delta-8 THC is believed to be illegal according to state law. Typically, marijuana plants produce Delta-9 THC in very high concentrations; from hemp, however, at .3% or less you get the therapeutic benefits of delta-9 THC without the psychoactive effects or head high. A full-spectrum hemp product contains all compounds found in the hemp plant, including CBD, .3% or less delta-9 THC, terpenes, and additional cannabinoids. Consumers take full-spectrum CBD products as a supplement for overall wellness, preventative measures, or to manage specific ailments or symptoms. Increasing research is being done regarding the properties of each cannabinoid and the effects they

10/6/21 9:12 AM

have on the body, leading to the development of delta-8 THC. The similarities between the two THC cannabinoids lie in their chemical structures and names. THC’s scientific name is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or delta-9 THC. Delta-8 THC is short for delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol. Delta-8 THC can cause effects similar to those from delta-9 THC, but they will be much less potent. Consumers state delta-8 THC has about 50% the psychoactive effect compared to delta-9 THC, meaning you get a relaxing, soothing body sensation without the paranoid, anxious, head high that marijuana can give.

Who Can Benefit from Delta-8 THC?

Choosing Your Delta-8 THC

As a reminder, not all CBD brands and products are the same, including delta-8 THC products. Products should contain a QR code and batch number that allows consumers to easily look up independent third-party test results. Stay away from brands and products with questionable test results, as they may contain harmful substances or illegal amounts of delta-9 THC. Delta-8 THC can be found in different strengths in various methods, including sublingual tincture oils, water solubles, edibles, vape cartridges, and as flower. When consuming delta-8 THC products for the first time, please do so in the safety of your own home, and remember, low and slow is the way to go. •

Consumers experience an overall mind and body relaxation when taking delta-8 products. Most consumers state taking too much delta-8 THC causes them to become so relaxed, they feel lethargic or sleepy. Because of these effects, delta-8 THC could be a possible alternative medicine for insomnia. Consumers who are not receiving the maximum relief for chronic pain management from full-spectrum CBD products should give delta-8 THC products a try. Furthermore, if you are

thinking of obtaining your Medical Marijuana card, try hemp-derived delta-8 THC products first. Consumers are saying “the effects are a perfect balance between full-spectrum CBD and medical marijuana products.” Delta-8 THC products could also be beneficial for managing anxiety and stress relief. And in a state where recreational marijuana is still not legalized, hemp delta-8 THC products can be an option for consumers.

hat if I told you I can see you in the future: needing healthcare but being unable to make the decisions necessary to attain it? I have many friends who, for the life of them, refuse to talk about a dreaded day in the future when they may become incapacitated—let alone think about giving up their decision-making to someone else. Imagine I just got off of a delayed flight and hustled my way through a foreign airport to get into a rental car. It has been a hectic and rainy morning. An impending meeting with a client and potential buyers of her business in an hour keeps me preoccupied, and I don’t realize I’m in danger until I’m already hit. Later, I find out that someone hydroplaned on the wet road and ran into me, rendering me unconscious. In an instant, this great advocate cannot advocate for anyone—let alone herself. I am hospitalized and much to my chagrin, they track down my ex-husband, because I never got around to updating my healthcare proxy.

Luckily, I survive this catastrophe, but what if my injuries had been serious enough to warrant my placement in a long-term care facility for rehabilitation? My ex-husband certainly would not have had my best interests at heart when making this decision. In this hypothetical I was safe, but a mentor of mine always said, “leave nothing to chance.” If I am unable to advocate for my own healthcare wishes due to an illness or injury, how can I be sure I get the care I want?

Preparing for the Possibilities

A healthcare power of attorney, living will, and visitation directive can make life smoother for you and your loved ones. A healthcare power of attorney or healthcare proxy allows you to choose someone you trust to make healthcare decisions for you if you are not able to. This document is especially important if the person you choose as your agent is not your legal spouse.

Her daughter said she would keep her on and pray for a miracle, whereas her son said he would make the difficult decision to remove life support. When my mother-in-law saw the disagreement her children had regarding the decision, she realized that drafting a living will could put an end to their disagreement. A Metaphysical Dive into the

Dynamics of the Pandemic By Maryanne Costerella, MA, LADC

“When soul is neglected, it doesn’t just go away; it appears symptomatically in obsessions, addictions, violence, and loss of meaning.” —Thomas Moore

A

s a licensed integrative/addictions psychotherapist and spiritual scientist, I weave ancient wisdoms of psychology with contemporary philosophy to treat emotional trauma and addictive process. I believe the collective body of our world is a physical representation of the world’s internal soul’s experience—COVID-19 was “allowed” to happen because of the diminishment and loss of existential meaning (soul purpose) in the world. Instead, EGO focus (Edging God Out) represented by money, greed, power, global elitism, technology, workaholism, substance use disorders, addiction to the Reader’s Digest view of life, toxic eating, and compulsive self-reliance became the newly glamorized “drugs of choice.” Technocrats gained power because screen/device addiction, AKA electronic brains, created more value and revenue than human beings.

Will “I Am Not a Robot” Devolve into “I Am Not a Human Being”?

Do you consider the possibility of “men behind the curtain” of conventional politics (a proverbial deep state) intent upon a Great Reset to gain full control of the human system? Or perhaps we contribute to our own slavery through device addiction and then become adolescently curious

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 38

about why socializing other than virtually meets with significant resistance? The vaccine is the popular narrative, the easy fix, the one-size-fits-all, effortless remedy— the 100-yard dash vs. the marathon. Our disinterest in the truth setting us free breeds the most dangerous drug on the planet—DENIAL. The cultural apathy about vaccine pharmaceuticals parallels our malaise concerning the ingredients and inflammatory dangers of alcohol, fast food, sugar, marijuana, and other drugs that endanger the brain, heart, gut, and lungs—they provide transient relief via antidepressants and anxiety medications prescribed ad nauseum for broken hearts and historical traumas. Grief cannot be healed with chemicals.

Have Ethical Concerns Devolved into Systemic Financial Motivations?

Our world culture is suffering from the repression of traumatized grief exacerbated by the industry’s collusion to tamp down human emotion with medications that support the system’s financial addiction—GREED. Will the vaccine’s massive implementation into our new world culture allow us to revert to a stagnated addictive existence, a relapse to the old normal to excuse us from doing the work?

10/6/21 9:12 AM

The injection does not require a lifestyle change; in other words, we need not bother strengthening the immune system through regular exercise, nutritional adjustments, therapy (individual, couples, family), decreasing alcoholism and workaholism, technology, gaming, internet pornography, and so on. Technology is a process addiction— we are gradually losing our voices; we speak and communicate from a distance with less affect, emotion, connection, concern, and empathy for ourselves and others; our brains are multitasking, creating a metastatic apathy for the needs of the heart and soul.

2021 challenges us to experience the withdrawal phase of this comprehensive addictive process and begin the real work following 2020’s detox. Is the impending need for additional boosters an intuitive reminder that we cannot Band-Aid a spiritual disease from the outside in? Grief, depression, trauma, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and addictions necessitate “inside-out” treatment, or cause before symptom; the symptom presents a challenge to the patient and clinician to locate the cause, and not simply to continually treat the symptom ad infinitum without ethical concern for its origin. Robert Whitaker’s Anatomy of an Epidemic investigates the biological causes of mental disorders and poses the question: Do psychiatric medications fix chemical imbalances in the brain, or do they, in fact, create them? Will the vaccine eradicate the SARS-2 epidemic, or will it increase the amount of immuno-compromised human beings on this planet? It is my belief that the biological, psycho-emotional, and spiritual pandemic is a tragically collaborative result of running scared from the individual truth of our individual traumas, the intergenerational wounding we incessantly choose to avoid and then legacy to our children, who then pass it on to their offspring, ad infinitum. People are heard saying, “this is never going to end,” inferring that the biological pandemic seems to be easier to address and places value the physical wound, rarely tending to the emotional and/or spiritual causation. I am sad and scared to admit we need to begin a truth dive into the origin of this virus I choose to call FEAR (Face Everything and Run), now medicated by governmental and global control of freedom that was once identified as democracy. David Brooks, a New York Times columnist, penned the book The Road to Character—the thematic comparison between the resume profile vs. the eulogy profile. The resume profile is an earthly, egoic goal composed of education and work history, awards, financial success, and so on. The eulogy profile is a meta-transitional goal required of each soul in a body to live with integrity despite an unawareness of when or how transition will occur. The Universe seeks holistic healing, asking us to love unconditionally with kindness and without judgment. Perhaps daily exercise, a cleaner diet, listening more, talking less, reading non-internet material, practicing yoga and meditation, journaling, befriending our shadow (our angers, betrayals, abandonments), practicing random acts of kindness, reducing drama and negativity, befriending nature, animals, children and the elderly, valuing wisdom over intellect, and so on, can help us to an existence of unconditional love. •

ESSENTIAL Naples

Metaphysically speaking, the virus threatens our lungs, the breath organs, because they are the home for each individual life. Our spirit reminds us to heal our unsanitary container—the body. If the sacred continuum of life is represented by breath and the mask devalues our need to breathe and talk, it is ironic that the mask and virus both attack and compromise the fullness of our breath and voices. I question whether vaccine efficacy is waning because the head of science—a vaccine detox—is an easy yet impotent cure for the loss of emotional and spiritual meaning. Every human being has suffered traumatizing family-of-origin experiences; unfortunately, trauma and addiction treatment continue to carry the stigma of shame in a world in which we are encouraged to “hide our issues in our tissues.” Complying with the status quo of “healing” using antidepressants, anxiety medications, and addictive pain relievers create a generational re-wounding. I am questioning that if we utilize the vaccine as the detox exit from the internal experience of deep healing, how then will we cure the causative malignancy inflaming the soul of our culture—running, avoiding, distracting, pleasure-seeking? Where does our non-life-sustaining clutter reside—in our bodies, psyches, closets, garages, offices, relationships? Our human energy is diminishing. The internal light is flickering in deference to technology, an “ism” created to minimize and devalue human life. Social distancing enables the virtual world to present as the reality of choice. Screen viruses intentionally create a “social distance” between the user and their real world. We need to remember we have no control over life and death—not pre- nor post-COVID-19. On our destined transition date, there will be only a two-part question asked of us: “How well did you love, and how well did you live?”

FALL 2021

By Deborah K. Krevalin

“Couples counseling is an opportunity to learn skills that enable partners to have and maintain healthy and loving relationships.” —Deborah K. Krevalin

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 40

A

s a psychotherapist and relationship specialist, I hear the word “trust” quite often in therapy sessions. In fact, lack of trust is one of the top causes when relationships start to deteriorate. Trust is a necessary ingredient for happy and successful relationships, romantic and otherwise. Yet the ability to trust others can be elusive for so many of us and without it, happy, healthy, and high-functioning relationships cannot be sustained.

Why Can Some People Trust More Easily than Others?

Like many therapeutic explanations, childhood plays a key role in the answer to this question.

The type of attachment we had to our parents or caregivers in childhood is a precipitating factor in our ability to trust as adults. Our early attachments serve as a model of how we view the world and the people in it. Children who grow up in an environment where the people around them are dependable, caring, and trustworthy will have a greater propensity to trust others in adulthood. Conversely, a child whose mother or caregiver is mercurial, unreliable, and apathetic (and/or neglectful, unkind, or abusive) will more than likely have difficulty with trust as an adult. When we have not processed and healed old wounds from childhood, we struggle with forging and maintaining healthy relationships in

10/6/21 9:12 AM

adulthood. Our emotional hurts make it hard for us to trust others—feeling unlovable or unworthy of a caring relationship is another example of the “emotional fallout” from unresolved pain. The truth is, a lack of trust in childhood poses a significant threat to our ability to have healthy, trusting relationships in adulthood.

So, How Do You Stop the Bleeding?

Do you have the kind of loving relationship you always imagined? Is the connection to your partner strong, deep, and alive? Is your method of communicating efficient and productive? If your answer to any of these questions is “no,” you are in good company. “Relationship Communication 101” was not offered in high school. Everyone is worthy of having fulfilling, satisfying, and trusting relationships. Couples who have this type of partnership are each other’s top priority and they are confident that despite hard times and life challenges, they can overcome anything because they have each other. Trusting relationships give us the freedom to live life authentically and to become the best versions of ourselves. If you want to improve the state of your relationship, ask for help and make it happen. You and your partner are worth it. •

Communication Is the Holy Grail of All Successful Relationships

If “it takes two to tango,” it certainly takes two partners to create healthy communication. In many ways, partners are as enmeshed in each other’s lives as they are in their own. Isn’t this what we sign up for when we begin an intimate relationship? Bottom line—it’s paramount that couples learn how to communicate with each other, and to do this, they must develop the skills. If we want our relationships to have legs, it’s imperative to have exceptional, well-oiled tools, and here is why: When communication between two partners is subpar, they will grow apart over time. When this happens, relationships become vulnerable to problems such as lack of intimacy, frequent arguments, criticizing or belittling, feeling unseen and unheard, infidelity, and loneliness, which all culminate in the loss of interest in the relationship and ultimately, complete disengagement.

What Does Trust Look Like?

ESSENTIAL Naples

In healthy, successful relationships, trust takes shape in numerous ways. Healthy couples understand the importance of listening to their partner, really listening, conscious listening with empathy. There is great power in being truly heard, understood, and validated without rebuttal or defense. Dependability is vital—always showing up, no matter what, without excuse, is another expression of trust (and love) in relationships. It may not be the sexiest quality a partner brings to the table, but dependability is a rock-solid, necessary trust-builder. Conflict is inevitable in relationships; even the most stable, loving partners won’t always agree. However, the ability to resolve conflict in healthy, constructive ways is another sign that trust exists within a relationship. The problem is that many couples have not acquired the tools needed for healthy conflict resolution. For example, poor communication can create stress and mistrust, weakening the connection and bond. In this case, the door to other damaging relationship problems has been opened. The ability to successfully work through disagreements is an excellent barometer for trustworthiness in a relationship.

One word: Therapy. Or perhaps two words: Couples counseling. Whatever you call it, the sooner you and your partner begin working with a therapist, the better. The longer you wait, the more frustration, anger, and resentment will build up, and damaging relationship habits such as arguing, ridiculing, and giving your partner the silent treatment become even more ingrained. Unfortunately, people tend to look at therapy as a last resort or Hail Mary. Couples counseling is an opportunity to learn skills that enable partners to have and maintain healthy and loving relationships. This is especially valuable when life throws inevitable curveballs at us and our relationships. Couples counseling is sought out by smart, sensible people who understand that there are times in life that you need to ask for professional help. If your house burned down, would you buy supplies at Home Depot and rebuild it yourself? Of course not, you would hire highly trained contractors. The same goes for learning how to communicate—we don’t come out of the womb knowing how to communicate; it is a learned behavior. But what if no one ever taught us how to communicate in a healthy way (or at all)? What if our parents did not model a loving relationship with healthy communication skills? How are we supposed to know what that even looks like? Lack of proficient communication skills is not a character flaw; it is simply a skill that no one ever taught you, and that is not your fault.

Robotics Muscular Therapy Is a Game Changer By Theresa Edmunds

ches and pains getting you down? We all seem to have some aches and pains that bother us on a daily basis. But why are these chronic issues so prevalent? It has to do with the way that our muscles work as well as our lifestyle. Our muscles start off long and pliable, able to move freely and allowing us wide range of motion. As we age, become less active, or engage in repetitive motion or certain postures, our muscles start to contract and shorten, losing flexibility. Injury, stress, and even everyday activities can cause muscles to shorten and become imbalanced as well.

Why Relaxed Muscles Matter

As muscles shorten, they become tight and can change our posture and even pull bones out of alignment (the reason people need chiropractic care). It can also inhibit athletic performance. As performance is lost, pain sets in and if the muscle is overstretched, muscles may tear and

become injured even further, exacerbate the issue. As large muscles shorten, it becomes very difficult to lengthen them again. Manual therapy such as massage cannot put enough sustained pressure on the large muscles to allow them to completely relax and return to their natural state. Certain postures cause muscles to contract. Today, we often spend a lot of time with our arms forward—driving, computer work, phone use, kitchen work, and so on causes our shoulders to round as our pectoral muscles becomes tight with lack of use and stretching. Even something passive like sitting for prolonged periods cause large muscles such as the psoas and hip flexors to shorten, which can cause low back pain as these large muscles pull and strain other muscles. The pain that these tight muscles cause is real, and no amount of stretching can lengthen these large muscles once they become shortened.

A muscle therapy technology called Robotic Precision Therapy can solve these issues. This non-invasive, passive therapy applies gentle static pressure to a specific area of the muscle at programmed intervals. This light pressure lengthens the muscle fibers back to their proper state, correcting imbalances. This lengthening process alleviates the tension on the bone structure and nerves. An evaluation of each body’s general biomechanics is made, determining which muscles are inhibiting movement. Then, using a robotic arm and a computer, these benefits are achieved using intellectual manipulation, applying precise pressure to connective tissues dramatically increasing mobility while greatly decreasing pain: • Lengthening muscles • Correcting imbalances • Releasing waste build-up • Softening muscles • Restoring normal blood flow • Aiding in healing • Alleviating tension on the skeletal structure, muscles, and nerves Athletes intent on taking their game to the next level can benefit from Robotic Precision Muscular Therapy by gaining increased flexibility, strength, balance, coordination and better retention of muscular development. Additionally, both new and old injuries can be treated and held at bay while allowing athletes to continue to play, and often, afflictions common to a particular sport (tennis elbow, for instance) can be relieved with just one treatment. This patented, revolutionary method of treating injuries and relieving aches and pains can dramatically improve athletic performance—its therapeutic value cannot be overstated. Muscular therapy compliments other treatments. It’s a “non-competing” therapy method that will actually help speed and improve the results of other treatments. In a relatively short time, this therapy helps people recover faster with less pain and offers longer lasting results. •

Softer Skin Than You’ve Had in Years By Dr. Diane Hayden, PhD

FALL 2021

had the pleasure of sitting down with Mindy DiPietro, at Aesthetic Treatment Centers in Naples to talk about the hottest new trends in skincare! Mindy and her partner Dr. Kathleen Marc have cultivated a strong and knowledgeable skincare team. The center offers dermaplaning, Epiwave and microneedling, advanced PRP procedures, body contouring and feminine rejuvenation among other skincare services.

Dermaplaning

“I was shocked to notice that my skin felt softer than it had in years— like many years!” —Dr. Diane Hayden, PhD

One of the trendiest exfoliation options today is dermaplaning, which is performed using a sterile surgical scalpel to manually exfoliate dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin. This treatment results in ultra-smooth, fresh, and brighter skin. By removing that dead layer and hair from the face, the skin is evened out and it helps with cell metabolism which helps new skin come to the surface. Dermaplaning cleverly triggers the cell regeneration process and improves the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. The effects of the procedure are instant, leaving your skin with a smooth appearance and a radiant glow. Along with the removal of fine hairs, it results in healthier skin that feels silkier.

Why Would You Choose to Have a Dermaplaning Treatment?

Here are just a few of the benefits: • It painlessly exfoliates the stratum corneum (top layer of the skin) to stimulate cellular turnover with no downtime. • It is a great option for clients with sensitive skin, rosacea, and pregnant women who are looking for a deep exfoliation. • It may be performed prior to treatments like facials, laser, and chemical peels for better product penetration. • It is typically performed frequently— every 4 weeks. • It helps makeup go on smoother and more evenly. • It can help significantly lighten postinflammatory scars from past acne. • It does not make the hair grow back thicker and darker.

06 ESN Layout v9f.indd 44

What Is a Treatment Like?

After one, I was hooked. It was so relaxing I might have fallen asleep had I not been asking my aesthetician a million questions for this article. She started with a cleanse to remove oils from my face and followed that with a toner. This is used to increase the effectiveness of the dermaplaning. Then the procedure started with a tool that looked just like a tiny butter blade. After she ran the tool across my skin a few times I wasn’t concerned at all about how it would feel, as it felt just like lightly running your fingernail across your skin. Following the treatment, your skin may be slightly pink. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), growth factors, or other treatment products may be applied to encourage faster skin rejuvenation. The best part, however, was her signature face massage—WOW—I could have totally fallen asleep on the table. I was shocked to notice that my skin felt softer than it had in years—like many years! My skin tone was drastically improved and evened out. I immediately noticed a softening of fine lines around my eyes, forehead, and frown lines. That day I left feeling amazing, but the next day when I went to apply my normal makeup, I can’t tell you the difference I noticed. My makeup went on like butter and I literally felt airbrushed. After treatment, wearing of sunscreen is strongly advised. In addition, it is recommended to not use any products with glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, Retin-A, or retinol unless advised to do so by your skin care professional, and no exfoliating for three days following the treatment (why would you need to?). You can return to your regular skincare routine thereafter and make sure to stay hydrated. One of the reasons skin can look dull and have buildup is from ongoing dehydration. Aesthetic Treatment Centers truly have something for every guest, whether it be relaxation, results, or both. They strive to offer organic product lines that are impactful and results oriented. • By Dr. Diane Hayden. Floating: A Natural Way of Healing

iagnosing cancer is a long, drawn-out process. What’s worse is that when your diagnosis finally comes back, it’s only the beginning of a much longer, much more stressful time. The constant flow of doctors, nurses, and worried thoughts work to make the situation even more difficult on your mind and body, right when it needs rest the most. That’s where floatation therapy comes in. We realize that from the initial diagnosis to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, cancer is an endless struggle and stressor. Perhaps, then, the best way to cope mentally is to shut those thoughts off—even if only for an hour. Floating is a good example of an alternative medicine that can assist an individual in the various stages of cancer and remission. Floatation Therapy, otherwise known as floating, or R.E.S.T. (restricted environmental stimulus therapy), is showing incredible promise and popularity in the cancer arena.

Float Your Worries Away

The power of meditation is very well known and very real, and though it is not a cure-all, it does bring immense benefits for mind and body. Floatation therapy can be seen as fast-track meditation, offering what very few other therapies or treatments can: a solid hour of pure, unadulterated peace. Our minds and bodies respond to stress together. The constant input from medical staff, plus the never-ending fears going on in our minds, can become overwhelming very quickly. The most consistent report from floaters is a sense of calm that persists long after the session ends. Even a single float session can equip you, for a time, with the peace of mind and emotional well-being to handle your medical challenges. Flotation is an instant mind and muscle relaxer. It is like meditating without having practiced meditation, like receiving the effects of a full-body massage without being touched, and like getting the most restful sleep without actually sleeping— all in one hour. During floatation, parts of the brain are activated that help the body with restoration, rejuvenation, and inspiration.

Wash Away the Pain

One of the most popular uses of floatation therapy today is for pain management, particularly chronic pain. When we enter a float tank, our body seems to melt into the water. This loss of feeling—the origin of the term “sensory deprivation”—has major benefits for pain. Floating shuts off input, and the feeling of weightlessness means that physical and mental pain seem to disappear, if only temporarily, making floating a clear benefit for cancer patients. Treatments for many other conditions are notorious for pain, and we can find immense relief in the tank. Chronic pain from a medical condition need not hold us back, and with floating we can relieve it in much the same way as we do our mental worries. Another surprising benefit from floating is the high concentration of magnesium in Epsom salts. Many chemotherapy drugs can sap the body of magnesium, an essential mineral for nutrition. Floating in a tank filled with magnesium/sulfite-rich salt is an easy way to replenish the body with this important element. Before floating, it is always recommended to include your medical doctor or oncology specialists about your choice to try floating. Your doctor may suggest that floating should be avoided immediately after infusions, radiation, and/or any surgery that involves a healing process. Floatation therapy is not a substitute for other medical treatments, but it can offer serious relief to cancer patients struggling to find peace in their time of need. Floating should be a consideration for anyone in the process of managing the various stages of cancer and remission, as it presents a unique and effective way to address the body and mind. Regardless of the way you chose to experience your float, it will minimize sensory stimuli (including gravity), which offers a chance for the mind to unplug and the body to heal. • Not sleeping well?
