Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that was first identified in 1982 by Australian scientists Barry Marshall and Robin Warren. This bacterium
typically resides in the stomach but is also found in other parts of the body. Approximately 50% of the world population harbors Helicobacter pylori in their upper gastrointestinal tract; however, most do not experience complications as a result. Helicobacter pylori has been identified as the causative agent of colorectal polyps, gastritis, peptic ulcers, stomach cancer, and colorectal cancer.
