There has been a recent market shift towards city bikes designed from the ground up for comfort and safety. For many people, the integrated nature of city bikes has the right grab-and-go convenience that they’re looking for. These urban bikes often come equipped with fenders, lights, smooth mid-volume tires for comfort and an upright riding position. They are generally light and sporty enough in their handling for casual riding and, with the rear rack and panniers or baskets, transition smoothly into commuting and utility use. ease oF Use. Consider how the bike fits your lifestyle and whether its features match up with your needs. Take account of how much your bike weighs and whether you will be able to carry it up stairs or lift it onto an elevated rack. Fenders, mudflaps and chain guards can make riding in less then perfect weather more comfortable. Integrated dynamo or battery lights are important for night riding. Racks, baskets and bags allow for spur-of-the-moment shopping and kickstands help support the bike while loading. Check to see that there’s room on your bike for your lock. Carrying CaPaCity. Taking weight off of ones body gives you greater comfort and ease of movement for signaling. If the bike doesn’t come equipped with a rack or basket, check to see that there are threaded mounting points that would allow you to securely mount these. Also, ask the salesperson how much weight the bike and rack or basket can handle to give you a better sense of how much you can carry on or in it at a time. ComFort. Proper fit is a determining factor for comfort. Saddle height, proper leg extension for eﬃcient pedaling and proper handlebar reach will increase your comfort, control of the bike and ability to see and interact with traﬃc. Get help from your local shop with this and try out several options with adjustments for your body and preferences. Other comfort features include seats that are a bit wider and padded to support a more upright riding position. Some seats even come with springs to smooth out the bumps on the road. Ergonomic grips can take the weight off your shoulders and wrists. Full-bodied pedals with a non-slip surface provide a comfortable pedaling platform with everyday shoes, even in wet weather. sPeed/ Pedaling. City bikes come with a wide variety of gearing options: from single-speeds to a broad spectrum of internal and external gears. The differing systems have a wide range of quality, serviceability and maintenance needs. Consider your local topography (do you live at the top of a hill?), your performance needs and what sorts of loads you plan on carrying. More gears mean you will be able switch between high and low resistance settings, which is essential for tackling large hills and carrying heavy loads. PriCe. Urban bikes are available at every price point, but, in general, a bike equipped with a modest gear range, fenders and a rear rack can fall within the $350-$650 USD range. Bikes with integrated lighting (often sidewall dynamos or more expensive but generally more robust hub dynamos) start in the $450 range. Bikes with wide-range internal hubs, better components, brighter lights and other refinements typically range from $800- $2500. Taking a trip down to your local bike shop can help you narrow down your options. Bring a list of some of the features you are looking for and share it with the shop staff. Describe how you would use the bike on a daily basis and ask questions about whether a certain bike is designed to meet your needs. Always get properly sized for a bike and take it for a ride – try several options and work with the shop person to properly adjust your position. internally-geared hubs are ideal for city riding for people that don’t want to worry about grease and maintenance. popular in europe, internally-geared hubs are slowly making their way into the north american market.

s city and urban bike categories grow, a wider variety of gearing options have become available: from basic single-speeds to modern external gear setups and a full gamut of internally-geared hubs. Some of the key considerations you should take into account when comparing gearing setups are: ease of use, gear range, maintenance and expense. External gearing is usually a bit lighter; can be set up to shift well in a variety of use and weather conditions; is easy to visually check for wear; and works with a variety of shifting options. The down sides are the exposure to the elements, external lube and road grime. External gears also have quite a bit of gearing overlap. To use the full range there are times when one must shift the front and rear derailleurs at the same time for progressive gear changes. Internal gears, while often heavier, are relatively clean, do not need external chain movement for shifting, can often be shifted while the bike is at a stop and offer a clear, single-shifter gearing progression. With both internal and external gearing systems it is possible to fine-tune the relative gearing by changing the size of the cogs or chain rings. This will allow the entire system to feel easier or harder and can be tailored to your riding style and local terrain. If you are the sort to do your own light maintenance, the external systems have the benefit of being modular, relatively easy to adjust and easy to diagnose problems. For daily maintenance, the internal systems are hard to beat – a little chain lube and keeping an eye on the brakes is about it. When the time comes to take your bike in for a yearly tuneup, the better sevento 14-speed internal systems can be serviced at many bike shops. It is not uncommon to get 10 or more years of use out of these systems if you stick with the manufacturer’s suggested service schedule.

for clean and easy commuting A new technology for the bicycle industry is the Gates Carbon Belt Drive. Belt drives can replace greasy chains on any single-speed or internally-geared hub bike so long as there is an opening in the frame. When combined with an internally-geared hub, the belt drive requires virtually no maintenance; and its popularity is on the rise. More companies, such as Raleigh, Spot Brand and Trek, are incorporating belt drives into the design of their bikes.

The new Alfine internally-geared hub boasts 11 gears with a wide range between the low and the high gears. This makes tackling a variety of terrain much more practical than prior versions. Other features include a new Rapidfirestyle shifter that includes instant, 2-Watt, and multi-release much like mountain bike shifters along with smoother operation and greater durability due to new gear design and the use of an oil lubricant.

External gearing systems are available at every price point with corresponding levels of sophistication, ease of use and durability. The market is not as deep in internally-geared systems. Generally speaking, the number of gears corresponds to the relative expense and durability of the product. Better three-speed hubs can be purchased for as little as about $65, with the wider range eight- to nine-speed options running in the $250-$300 range. The newer Alfine 11-speed option runs around $650, and more sophisticated Rohloff 14 up to about $1,500. When compared to higher end touring or mountain external set ups (shifters, derailleur’s and cassette) the pricing stays comparable. There are many complete bikes with the Nexus or Alfine 8 speed setups starting in the $650-$700 range. f (like me) you’re no good at packing light, the issue of how to haul things on your bike becomes crucial. Here’s a quick rundown of each carrying method’s merits and demerits. Baskets. A great option when you’re carrying light, picturesque objects: a baguette in a paper sack, a vintage hardcover, a bouquet of lilies. And, if you’re not shy, go ahead and show off that mega-bag of toilet paper! Just don’t try to carry 25 pounds (11 kilograms) of groceries in your handsome new wicker basket – for that you’ll need a heavy-duty front metal basket, porteur rack (a flat platform front rack) or bucket, as well as a strong front fork and the courage to risk flying over the handlebars if you have to make a quick stop. Bags. An elegant, simple stuff-carrying strategy that can enhance your style – think hand-embroidered messenger bag slung over one shoulder. A bag frees you from wrestling with baskets, racks, panniers, trailers and bungee cords, but is considerably less attractive if you’re inclined towards back pain. Consider backpacks and messenger bags with padded shoulder straps and features that fit your needs: pockets for odds and ends, a laptop sleeve or a minimalist bag with space for a notebook and your lunch. If you frequently find yourself riding in the rain, consider buying a waterproof bag or rain cover to prevent your stuff from getting soaked through. Panniers. A pannier (pronounced pan-year in the USA and pan-yeay in Canada) is any container that hooks to the top and side of your front or rear rack. They’re great when you want to carry more stuff than you can attach to your body. My ancient Ortlieb rolltops are waterproof and easy to deal with, and they’ve kept raccoons out of my camping food on trips aplenty. One friend washed laundry in his panniers while traveling, which I think attests to their all-around usefulness. If you’re crafty and budget-minded, try Donkeyboxx. (Or you can create a nice pair yourself out of covered buckets and some simple hardware.) A trailer. This is a great carrying method for any item too unwieldy for panniers – like a pie, or a child. Bike trailers increase your carrying capacity hugely, but your footprint becomes longer and wider, so you’ll need to learn how to navigate turns and around obstacles with the extra bulk. You also have to deal with attaching and detaching the trailer, which ranges from easy to fingerchoppingly treacherous. If you have the room to store a trailer, they are a cost effective alternative to the minivan. And if you happen to be riding on a busy road with three pies tucked neatly inside your repurposed baby trailer, expect dirty looks from drivers who can’t see the trailer’s contents and are shocked at your lack of concern for your “kid”. For everyone riding a bike at night, safety is priority number one. Sometimes you will leave before sunrise or after sunset. If you’re riding at times of low-visibility, a simple bike light might even save your life (or prevent an anxiety headache). Not all bike lights are designed to illuminate the road. Most lights on the market are designed to help others see you. A very basic set of lights will accomplish this, such as those made by Knog, Nite Rider and Planet Bike. An adequate set can run you anywhere from $20 to $60. It is important that whatever light you buy offers a flashing option. From a distance, a steady, non-flashing light may confuse other people on the road. A flashing light draws the necessary amount of attention without being distracting. Keep a white light in front and a red one in back so people know where you’re going. In areas lacking the ambient glow created by urban light pollution, investing in a brighter, higher-wattage bike light will serve the dual purpose of illuminating your path and signaling your presence. Lights of this caliber can range in cost from $100 to $1200. Lights designed by Light and Motion or Princeton Tec offer popular and comparatively affordable options. Active commuters may also be interested in generator technology. Most modern generator lights create power from the wheel hubs (and thus are not always cheap), though you can still find “throwback” generator options that run against the tire itself. Generator lights often do a good job of illuminating the road, though their power is entirely dependent upon the strength of the generator and the endurance of the rider. The best light, is the light most appropriate for where you ride. In areas of low light and visibility, brighter is better. If you don’t do a lot of night or low-visibility riding, or you live in a bright city, a basic set of flashing front/ rear lights is all you need. If you ride a bike and you live in a major city, you might already know that bike theft is about as common as appendicitis. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but it’s a huge pain when it does. The first step in arming yourself against bike theft is investing in an appropriate bike lock. Bike theft is a profitable and relatively ignored industry. It is most prevalent in large cities because there are a lot of bikes and a lot of places to hide. Theft also happens in suburbs or rural communities, but is less common. As a rule of thumb, the more urban your surroundings, the more your need increases for a heavy-duty bike lock. The two primary types of locks are cable-locks and U-locks. Some companies have tried to invent new styles, but cables and U-locks are industry standbys. Cables offer flexibility and versatility, but most of them can be broken with a cheap pair of bolt-cutters. For low-threat geographies, a basic cable lock provides ample protection, if only for thwarting vandals. U-locks come in a variety of strengths. Abus, Kryptonite and On-Guard make some of the strongest U-locks on the market. If a thief gets enough time, he or she can get through any lock. The purpose of a high-grade lock is to slow thieves down or turn them off altogether. Heavy-duty chain locks are another popular option. Though costly and sometimes unwieldy, they can be as strong as U-locks and as versatile as cablelocks. The big ones are intimidating, too. The most important part of the bike is the frame, though wheels are at risk for theft as well. No matter where you are locking your bike, the ideal is to secure everything, which is why a U-lock/ cable combination works best. Thread the cable through your wheels to the U-lock, which itself is secured to the frame and a bike rack, parking meter or other immobile unit. Research different locks and talk to local experts about what works best. It can be hard to legitimize an expensive lock purchase, but, as they say, protection is the best form of prevention.
