Hey, I’m Dr. Diane! W
“Our mission and intent is to support each reader’s wish to make a difference in their lives. Together, we can make a difference in the local community.” - Dr. Diane Hayden
elcome to the premiere issue of Essential Naples – a quarterly lifestyle publication in Southwest Florida for health-minded locals who desire credible information on wholistic health and well-being trends. Our coverage is 100% local with expert content that interests both local residents and professional wholistic practitioners. I started my publishing business with nothing more than passion, a laptop and a dream, and I’m thrilled to have created a socially conscious print and digital platform that has touched thousands in the last 13 years. Our sister magazines, Natural Nutmeg & ELM Maine, have become favorites for thousands of readers in Connecticut and Southern Maine. Now residents of Naples/SWFL can enjoy this fresh look at the many ways we all can lead holistic and healthy lives. I hope Essential Naples will become a regular must-read for you! I’d like to thank all of our advertisers and contributing writers who have helped to make this magazine possible. We would especially like to thank our new advisory board, Dr. Josephine Perez, Dr. Derrick DeSilva, Nina Azwoir, Jamie Kliewe, Denise Pancyrz, and Dr. Deanna Cherrone for all their support in getting this project off the ground. A big thank you to our Creative Director, Jim Nissen, for designing this gorgeous magazine that exceeded our wildest expectations. It has been an incredible journey! Launching a new print magazine is difficult enough, but to launch one during a pandemic is a completely different experience. We couldn’t have done it without all of you. Essential Naples focuses on four essential lifestyle pillars – Health, Relationships, Finance and Purpose. In each issue, you’ll find articles on wide-ranging topics from local experts in each of these areas who have dug up infinite nuggets of wisdom to share with all of us. Our mission and intent is to support each reader’s wish to make a difference in their lives. Together, we can make a difference in the local community. Please connect with the local healthcare practitioners and businesses featured who make this complimentary magazine possible. As I finish the first publisher’s letter, the endless hours of layout and editing will soon be completed and the first issue will be in your hands. Every aspect of creating this magazine has been a pleasure and to find yourself in work that you truly love is most certainly a gift. So, thank you again, to all those who helped to make Essential Naples a reality. Wishing you health and happiness

zone is a triatomic molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms. It has been successfully used in medicine for its microbiological properties: bacteriocidal, virucidal, and fungicidal for over 100 years. Ozone is a strong oxidant against free radicals as well as its destruction of almost all microorganisms. All this, and it is compatible with human epithelial cells, fibroblasts, and periodontal cells. There are no known side effects of Ozone when used properly and in the correct Certified professional hands.
Did You Know Southwest Florida is a Blue Zone?
B
lue Zones Project – Southwest Florida (SWFL), a free community well-being program thanks to the generous sponsorship of NCH Healthcare System, works with individuals and organizations to help people live healthier, happier and longer lives. We do this by engaging businesses, schools and youth-organizations, homeowner’s associations, restaurants, grocery stores and faith-based organizations to help make healthy choices easier where we work, play and live. We also partner with community planners and elected officials to help promote policy that supports access to healthy food and air, as well as walkable/ bikeable communities. Blue Zones Project is a “we” project as over 700 organizations and thousands of individuals are collaborating to boost well-being in SWFL. And it is working; since we started in 2015, well-being has skyrocketed in our area. Just nine years ago, per Gallup, we ranked 73rd in the nation for well-being. For the past 4 years, we have achieved the top spot for having the highest well-being in the nation. Now more than ever, we know how important good health is to support resilience to stress, of all kinds, including a global pandemic. Building resilience involves optimizing the five elements of well-being: social, physical, financial, community and purpose. Blue Zones Project has both virtual and hands-on tools to help individuals and organizations maximize these elements.
Benefits of Ozone Therapy
• Facilitates wound healing • Reverses sensitivity • Disinfection of pockets • Prevention of cavities (some may be reversed) • Increased tissue regeneration • Infection control • Tissue regeneration

Did You Know Floating Can Ease Stress and Anxiety? By Lynn Brewer

mood changes, irritability, poor emotional control, concentration issues, headaches and other physical symptoms. Studies have shown that float tanks are a valuable method for inducing relaxation and due to their high magnesium levels, they can also reduce pain and inflammation. Floating, also known as Flotation Therapy, has been used for years for its mental, spiritual, meditative, and physical benefits and has a vast amount of published research to support its claims. There is 1000 lbs. of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) in the shallow water you float in, so your body is extremely buoyant. This ratio is comparable to the salt ratio of the Dead Sea and allows for the most advantageous experience for the body and mind. Inside the float tank, the water is shallow and kept at 93.5 degrees. This is considered skin-receptor neutral, which means that you can lose track of where your body ends and the water begins. Skin-receptor neutral has many touted health benefits of its own, including meditative relaxation, which can help the body and mind calm and rejuvenate. You will be given ear plugs because your ears will be below the water, however there is a neck pillow if you’d prefer your ears to be above the water. The tanks are insulated against sound, so noise from the outside doesn’t reach you. You do have the option to listen to music if you wish to, but we encourage you to just relax and enjoy being unplugged. After you turn out the lights you will float in total darkness, though you do have the option to leave small, colored LED lights on. During your float session, the world is gone; it is a total escape. You will experience zero gravity weightlessness. Your body experiences amazing mental and physical benefits. Your body gets to rest and heal. •

9 SUMMER 2020
id you know that 40 million people in the United States are suffering from stress, depression and anxiety? If you’re one of them, leaving your disorder untreated can cause significant physical health disorders and diseases to develop, as well as cognitive decline. There are many ways to reduce stress, like anti-anxiety drugs, but those are often addictive and have other adverse side effects. Some people see great results with exercise, yoga, meditation or massage, but many are finding that floatation is the answer they’ve been looking for all along. Float tanks were developed over 60 years ago, but it’s just now becoming mainstream. Many of us have heard so much in the media about the benefits of floating therapy, but the details of the health benefits are better explained here. A float spa is an ultimate escape for overall health improvement. Whether referred to as sensory deprivation tanks, float tanks or simply “floating,” deprivation therapy treatments diminish nearly all sights, sounds, smells and touch, earning a reputation for naturally easing many ailments. Floaters report that sensory deprivation tank benefits include decreased insomnia and relief from chronic pain, anxiety, depression and addiction. Perhaps the beauty in all of this is that these reported benefits are possible without a doctor’s visit, breaking a sweat or filling any prescriptions. Relaxation and meditation practices are essential methods to tamp down elevated stress hormones. When the body and mind are under increased levels of stress hormones, it can lead to multiple health disorders. If a person is under chronic stress or suffering from long-term depression and anxiety, this can exacerbate issues such as fatigue, muscle weakness, depression, anxiety,

Decrease the Harmful Physical and Psychological Effects of Stress with Biofeedback By Jamie Kliewe

iofeedback can be described as a class of therapies using mind-body techniques that involve visual, auditory or frequency feedback to bring balance and harmony to Mental, Emotional and Physical functions of the body. This may include things such as heart rate, muscle tension, blood flow, pain perception, blood pressure and much more. This process involves being connected to a device with sensors that provide feedback about specific aspects of your body. The goal of biofeedback is to make subtle changes that result in a desired effect of less stress on the body. Long term chronic stress is one of the primary causes of most diseases and illnesses thus reducing overall stress on the body promotes healing and restoration. Some techniques of biofeedback may include relaxing certain muscles, slowing heart rate or respiration, or reducing feelings of pain. The Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback defines biofeedback as a process that allows people to alter their physiological ac-
tivity in order to improve health or performance. Utilizing precise measurement biofeedback devices, information about the body’s functions are provided to the user. They suggest, “The presentation of this information often in conjunction with changes in thinking, emotions, and behavior, supports desired physiological changes. Over time, these changes can endure without continued use of a biofeedback device.”
Types of Biofeedback
There are many different types of biofeedback devices. The specific approach you choose to utilize might depend upon what you hope to accomplish and what your therapist or physician recommends. Some of the available options include: ELECTRO-PHYSIOLOGICAL BIOFEEDBACK: Utilizes harnesses containing LED diodes designed to aid in the reduction of stress and promotes muscle relaxation.
6/20/20 1:38 PM
BREATHING: Respiratory biofeedback involves wearing sensor bands around the chest and abdomen to monitor breathing rates and patterns. With training, people can learn to have greater control over their breathing rates which can help in a variety of situations. HEART RATE: This type is known as heart rate variability biofeedback and there is some evidence that it might possibly be useful for a number of different disorders including asthma and depression. Patients using this type of biofeedback wear a device connected to sensors in either the ears or fingers or sensors placed on the wrists, chest, or torso. These devices measure heart rate as well as heart rate variability.
SKIN TEMPERATURE: In this form of biofeedback, patients wear sensors that detect blood flow to the skin. Because people often experience a drop in body temperature during times of stress, such devices can help people better detect when they are starting to feel distressed. A low reading on one of these monitors can indicate a need to utilize some stress management techniques. BRAIN WAVES: This type of biofeedback, often referred to as neurofeedback, involves utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain wave activity. Scalp sensors are connected to an EEG device. Neurofeedback is sometimes used as a non-invasive treatment for ADHD, pain, addiction, anxiety, depression, and other disorders.
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 11
• Treating tension headaches, migraines, and other pain • Controlling high and low blood pressure • Alleviating digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome • Helping patients control physical reactions to stress or anxiety • Aiding in relaxation and stress management due to chronic illness or disease
Biofeedback is particularly useful for managing stress as well as symptoms of conditions that may be exacerbated by stress. For example, therapists might use biofeedback to help patients control their response to stress. Chronic stress can have a wide range of negative health effects including decreased immunity, heart disease, depression, digestive problems, and sleep disorders. By learning how to manage the stress response using biofeedback, patients are able to decrease the harmful physical and psychological effects of stress. •
Jamie Kliewe, Owner and Practitioner, specializes in L.I.F.E System, HeartMath, and Zyto Biofeedback technologies, aimed at identifying stressors in the body and offering harmonizing techniques to restore balance. Services are offered at Omni Balanced Life Center 720 Goodlette Rd., Ste 205 in Naples. www.omninaples.com. 239.234.1608 office@omninaples.com.

11 SUMMER 2020
BLOOD PRESSURE: This type of biofeedback involves wearing a device that measures blood pressure. These devices provide information about the patient’s blood pressure and often guide the user through relaxation techniques that may rely on visual cues, breathing exercises, or music.
Biofeedback has been used for a range of applications, including:
By collecting data directly from the body, ZYTO biocommunication scan can provide insights into your personal wellness that may have gone unnoticed previously.
ESSENTIAL Naples
GALVANIC SKIN RESPONSE: This type of biofeedback involves measuring the amount of sweat on the surface of the skin. Galvanic skin response, also known as skin conductance, is a useful marker for detecting levels of emotional stimulation. Aside from the obvious thermoregulatory function of sweat, emotional stimulation can also easily trigger sweating. The more strongly people are emotionally charged, the stronger their skin conductance will be.
MUSCLE TENSION: In this type of biofeedback, sensors are placed at various points on the body and connected to an electromyography (EMG) device. This device detects changes in muscle tension over time by monitoring electrical activity that results in muscle contractions.

The Biological Dentist:
A Revolutionary Style of Dentistry By Dr. Josephine Perez, DMD

SUMMER 2020

“We have known for quite a long time that there is a mouth-body connection. Bacteria from the mouth travels through the blood stream to the organs. - Dr. Josephine Perez, DMD
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 12
Biological Dentist seeks the safest, least toxic and most conservative way to accomplish modern dentistry that is safe, functional, durable and esthetic. It is interesting how the term “alternative medicine” refers to a new holistic, integrative and functional approach to health….yet it has been in existence for thousands of years and “modern medicine” is about 100 years old. Most people find the “alternative ways” because of a personal medical condition that has not resolved. Others, are well versed in holistic ways and understand and live by it. We have known for quite a long time that there is a mouth-body connection. Bacteria from the mouth travels through the blood stream to the organs. As a biological dentist, my mantra continues to be: A healthy mouth is a healthy body and a healthy life!
How Do You Find a Biological Dentist?
Ask questions! Most dentists today are mercury free, however, very few are mercury SAFE. Being mercury safe means you protect the patient from harmful mercury vapors while removing them. Specialized equipment is necessary as well as a strict protocol. A practice needs to be S.M.A.R.T. certified. This entails rigorous training and examination to minimize harm to patients and staff. Over the past few months, many have spoken about “the new normal”. Fortunately, our protocols in the office have always had universal precautions, but our S.M.A.R.T. certification eases us into even greater and extra precautionary measures than a traditional dental office. Our office is already biological, so we have been doing these protocols for a long time and do not need to “play catch up” to the new normal. Here are a few of the state of the art offerings we have in our practice.
Compatibility Testing
Every person is different and every person’s toxic level is different. This is why the most important variable is finding the root cause. We encourage compatibility testing with everyone. It is extremely important to make sure what each person is compatible with and only then, choose the appropriate materials. We all want to enjoy quality of life. I strive for finding root cause so that patients can know their own bodies and can live, play, travel, dance to their heart’s content. It all begins with good food and food is medicine.
Air & Water Purification Systems
We have state of the art air purification and water purification systems. Our AC has always had MERV14 or better filters. Our air is surgical grade that not only traps bacteria, VOCs, mold spores, off gassing, parasites and other toxins; it kills them. We have specialized evacuation systems for aerosols, which we are using on every patient even if it’s just a cleaning. This aerosole EVAC system has silver impregnated activated carbon and an electrostatic filter. We have invested in specialized UV-C filters (222nm-254nm) that are left overnight. Our ozone machine is producing fresh ozonated water all day; in fact this ozonated water runs through our systems so that no biofilms are formed in any of the water lines. We have specialized PPE made to order and our masks are P100 respirators.
Homeopathy
We use homeopathics as much as possible and have them available pre- and post- treatments. We encourage healing with high grade sup-

We use fluoride alternatives and educate our patients on biomimetic toothpastes and adjuncts. We make our own sanitizers with 151 proof alcohol and high grade, nonGMO, expeller pressed and/or cold pressed organic essential oils that we also offer to our patients. Our patients are offered a choice in their pre-treatment rinses: essential oil mouthwash, colloidal silver mouthwash, ozonated water or a peroxide rinse for 60 seconds. We work with Integrative Doctors, Naturopaths, Chiropractors, healers, anti-aging specialists and the medical community because it’s all connected. Compatibility matters, technique matters, isolation matters, quality materials matter, overall health of a patient matters, ability to process toxins matters…and genetics matter. Our staff is regularly trained in this comprehensive protocol. Nothing is too excessive for the health and wellbeing of patients and staff. We go above and beyond the required standards recommended by the CDC, FDA, and ADA. This “choreography” is continuously changing in order to become better and healthier. 14 “The science of hormone replacement has progressed hugely in the past 20 years. At the annual Breast Cancer Symposium held in San Antonio, Texas, a review of the Women’s Health Initiative vindicates estrogen as the cause of increased incidence of breast cancer!” - Dr. Carol L. Roberts, MD

A
s people age they dry up - skin, eyes, mouth and private parts! Their bones become fragile and their brains shrink in their skulls. We’ve all seen it! The reason for this desertification is the loss of sex hormones around midlife. For women, the transition is rather abrupt and very variable. Some women simply stop menstruating and have no further problems, while some women suffer mood swings and temperature regulation issues for years. Sleep becomes a distant memory and memory itself begins to fade. When I see a woman in her early to mid 50’s sit down in my office and bursts into tears, it’s pretty clear what is going on. She is missing her hormones. Her sex life has gone from a healthy and satisfying regular event, to a dreaded performance. It is uncomfortably dry “down there”, and she’s distressingly disinterested. And the weight gain. Oh my, the weight gain can take her from an hourglass figure to a teapot on legs. The great news is that the science of hormone replacement has progressed hugely in the past 20 years, since the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) came out in 2006 and everyone was scared off of hormone replacement beyond five years after menopause. Sadly, it will take time for the good news to catch up, and for the doctors to believe it. Here’s the good news. The annual Breast Cancer Symposium was held in San Antonio, Texas a month ago. A review of the WHI done and endorsed by a dozen prestigious cancer centers vindicates estrogen as the cause of increased incidence of breast cancer! The real culprit was the
patent drug progestins (medroxyprogesterone acetate, norethindrone), both invented drugs that never existed in nature. Real hormones protect the hormone receptors from environmental toxins like pesticides, plastics, heavy metals and others that do cause damage to DNA. Real hormones send “youthifying” messages to the body, renewing old cells and lubricating joints, skin, hair and other body parts. Real hormones are brain protective too as the brain needs hormones to function at its peak. Brains can atrophy with age, but less so when on natural hormones. For those women interested in slow, juicy aging, you must find a provider who is knowledgeable in prescribing bioidentical hormones. Most doctors - even gynecologists – are only familiar with the pharmaceutical options; not the best, as we have seen. The doctors in the know use compounding pharmacies to make a hormonal recipe that is unique to each individual’s needs, as we are all different and dosing varies throughout the life cycle. With each decade after menopause the dosing should be revisited, especially if the patient suddenly becomes symptomatic (breast soreness, hot flashes), that indicate a change in dose is in order. Here are the essential hormones needed:
Estrogen
Estrogen provides the juice. Vaginal dryness, flaking skin, dry mouth, dry eye, are usually a result of estrogen deficiency. Replacing estrogen can result in improved mental sharpness as well.
6/20/20 1:39 PM
Progesterone
This is the safest hormone and helps with sleep when given in a capsule at night. It helps with mood stabilization. That woman who cries at commercials responded very well to progesterone and no longer has the urge to weep at inappropriate times.

Protective of heart muscle, helps prevent (and treat) breast cancer, and makes your workout more beneficial as there is a better chance of putting on muscle mass. A woman in my practice gets 2mg a day, where a man might get 100mg, so the risk of turning into the Incredible Hulk is nonexistent for a woman. It is also the hormone that supports your sex drive. For men, it’s the main event. Testosterone starts to decline around 35, and slowly disappears until he is flabby, grumpy and apathetic. Replacing testosterone really turns back the clock for a guy. The way we dose the hormones might be different for different women. Some can use a topical skin cream and get great results, others need a vaginal formula because they don’t absorb through the skin. Giving estrogen by mouth is never a good idea. The liver is good at denaturing it and making it into potentially troublesome metabolites. Some practices use inserted pellets that slowly dissolve and release their hormones over several months. As a former surgeon, I’m not crazy about repeatedly puncturing the skin, although some doctors (and many of their patients) swear by it. It’s a matter of convenience and personal preference. After a few weeks on the hormones, I insist on getting a urine test to see all of the influences a hormone has as it enters and exits the body in different forms. Blood tests or saliva tests miss these all important metabolites and don’t show a true picture of a patient’s actual risks. Slowing down aging is much harder without hormones. Find a knowledgeable provider, expect some tweaking along the way, and age slow, juicy and hot! •

“When we experience problems with our sleep or problems with our balance or experience excess anxiousness or anger, these are indications of a brain imbalance. - Dr. Kelly Miller, NMD

R
esearch has found that symptoms related to ADHD, Autism Spectrum, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), are often associated with what is known as a hemispheric weakness or imbalance in the brain. This means one side of the brain is operating less efficiently than the other and this causes symptoms like anxiousness, depression, insomnia, short term memory loss, balance problems, mental fog, and more. Generally speaking, most problems in the aging brain are associated with a left hemispheric weakness and most problems in younger individuals suffering from ADHD or Autism Spectrum symptoms are associated with a right hemispheric weakness.
Hemispheric Weakness
Assessment of Function
Neuroplasticity
The brain has neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity means that the brain has the ability to change. Specifically stimulating certain areas of the body with the correct light, sound, and vibrational frequencies will have a positive impact on a weak area of the brain. With frequency and repetition, these weakened brain pathways are strengthened. Over time, these weakened areas in the brain are strengthened and more normal function returns. All assessments are painless and non-invasive and include state-of-the-art technologies not found elsewhere. We use QEEG Brainmapping, RightEye, Balance Traks, Interactive Metronome, cognitive testing, and more. For more information on these technologies, please visit our website at www.savingyourbrain.com. Initial assessments usually take 90-120 minutes. Initial assessments are done on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Naples. •
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 17
17 SUMMER 2020
Each part of the brain is assessed to determine normal or abnormal function or strength and weakness. Those areas that are weak are then strengthened through specific sound, light, or vibrational frequencies. The brain responds to sound, light, and vibration. The area of weakness in the brain can be strengthened much like an arm or leg can be strengthened after an injury. When we experience problems with our sleep or problems with our balance or experience excess anxiousness or anger, these are indications of a brain imbalance. It is our job to figure out where and why this is occurring and help restore brain balance by strengthening the weak areas. This requires repetition and frequency of the right brain exercises.
ESSENTIAL Naples
When we speak of a hemispheric weakness, we are discussing the area of the brain known as the frontal cortex on that side. The frontal cortex is the decision-making part of our brains. The front half of our brain is used to make decisions after receiving sensory information from the back half of our brain – the occipital, parietal, and temporal areas. The back half of our brain is responsible for processing information coming from our eyes (vision), ears (hearing), touch (hands and feet), and more. If the information we receive from our eyes, ears, hands, feet, and the like is not gathered properly or processed properly, or coordinated with other incoming information in the right timing and sequencing, then we cannot make the correct decisions.

Can Common Symptoms Be a Sign of Type 2 Diabetes? By Denise A. Pancyrz
ESSENTIAL Naples
S
SUMMER 2020
18
ymptoms are signs. Do you pay attention or ignore them? A symptom is a physical or mental feature which is regarded as indicating a condition of disease, particularly such a feature that is apparent to the patient. Have you noticed any of the following symptoms as you age? • Fatigue, frequently tired or have that foggy feeling • Difficulty maintaining a healthy weight • Broken sleep; having to urinate too often • Vision changes such as floaters, blurred vision, dark or empty spots These are common symptoms we tend to disregard and consider part of the aging process. Did you know that these symptoms can be a sign of diabetes?
Fatigue
Fatigue can be due to aging, a demanding schedule, a lack of proper rest, or a combination of these symptoms. It is also a sign of diabetes which is an energy problem. Glucose is not effectively moved from your bloodstream to your cells so it can be stored for energy.
Weight Gain
In essence, weight gain is an imbalance of consuming more calories than what your body needs versus how many calories you burn. Weight gain is the visual sign of current and future ill health. Millions of Americans struggle with weight gain due to insulin resistance leading to diabetes. A short-term diet may offer short-term weight loss. Addressing the imbalance of glucose and insulin requires lifestyle changes. Please take note, with immediate weight loss, at any age, diabetes should be taken into consideration due to deficient insulin levels. Get tested as soon as possible.
Frequent Urination
Endless trips to the bathroom during the night can be due to a weakening bladder or prostate issue. With poorly managed diabetes, your kidneys will flush excess glucose from the blood and into your urine, increasing the frequency of your trips
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 18
to the bathroom. Poorly managed diabetes can increase your risk of urinary tract infections.
Vision Impairment
Vision issues such as floaters and dark spots can be age related. Blurred vision can be due to pink eye, the development of cataracts or high blood pressure. Dark spots or strings, blurry or wavy vision can be a symptom of diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is when blood vessels in the retina become damaged from long-term high glucose levels. Sudden vision changes should be addressed immediately.
Skin Disorders
Other symptoms such as itchy skin can go undiagnosed. Itchy skin and other skin disorders can be caused by digestive issues, food sensitivities and allergies. Did you know that these are symptoms that can be a sign of diabetes? Before I was diagnosed with diabetes, my skin was very itchy. I believed it was from dry skin due to cold weather while living in the Midwest.
Hot Flashes
Hot flashes can be a tricky symptom. I thought I was in perimenopause. No one suggested I get tested for diabetes. It seemed plausible, due to my age, that it was perimenopause. The resolution was balancing my blood glucose levels. The hot flashes and itchy skin went away. No creams, no salves, no medication for hot flashes. There are many more symptoms of diabetes that can go undiagnosed. As you notice changes in your physical or mental being, take note. Discuss with your physician if your symptom is the underlying reason for something much bigger. Consider the number of times you purchased over-the-counter treatments to attempt to resolve your symptom. It may seem surprising that one disease can be linked to so many symptoms. That is because diabetes is a systemic issue. Diabetes can affect you from head to toe. Avoid masking your symptoms and identify the underlying source of your issues. If diabetes is the root of your problem, the effects can be reversed naturally. You owe it to yourself to verify. •

Pancyrz is a national diabetes reversal and holistic lifestyle coach, speaker, and best-selling author of The Virgin Diabetic, Reverse the Effects of Type 2 Diabetes, Reduce Medication, and Improve Your Glucose Levels, available on Amazon. Microneedling:
The Natural Alternative for Anti-Aging Skincare By Jacqueline Rochonchou and Ashley Anderson
What is the Microneedling Procedure?
How Does Microneedling Work?
Miniscule pinpricks from the procedure cause a slight injury to the epidermis layer of the skin and the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue to repair the injury. This new skin tissue is smoother in tone and texture. We all normally lose collagen in our skin tissue via age or injury. By encouraging the skin to make new tissue, there may be more collagen to help make the skin firmer. In addition, when the skin re-epithelializes, the epidermis is thicker which allows your skin to rejuvenate faster in the future. Microneedling can be used on the entire body including the face, neck, decolletage, arms, back, c-section scars, stretch marks, and even locations where moles have been removed. It is safe for most skin types. At Skin Deep Naples, we also use the Tensage by BioPelle which heals the skin as the treatment is given. It helps to shorten healing
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 19
What Can I Expect After the Procedure? You’ll need about 4-5 days of down time where you want to stay out of the sun as much as possible and refrain from using any harsh skin products like exfoliants or scrubs. Initially it will look and feel like a mild sunburn. The procedure will dehydrate your skin slightly and create controlled microinjuries, so the cells rush to the surface to heal. There may be some pinpoint bleeding. During healing, avoid retinal products, acids and glycolyics. You want to avoid intense exercise or other activities that promote excessive sweating, as you want to keep the skin as clean as possible. Stay hydrated and avoid coffee and alcohol as well. We recommend treatment every 6-8 weeks for best results.
Are There Any Contraindications to Microneedling?
You may not be an ideal candidate for microneedling if you: • Are pregnant • Have certain skin diseases, such as psoriasis or eczema • Have open wounds • Have had radiation therapy recently • Have a history of skin scars

icroneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. This treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, age spots, large pores, reduced elasticity, acne scars and stretch marks. It improves the skin’s texture and tone and is a fantastic natural alternative to Botox, chemical peels or other invasive procedures.

Overall, microneedling is a fantastic alternative to invasive skin rejuvenation procedures, especially Botox. You will see a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and experience a softer and smoother tone and texture of your skin. Even your makeup goes on more smoothly. In addition, the microchannels created through microneedling allows your skincare products to be absorbed more effectively into deeper layers of the skin the entire time you’re healing . •

“Our goal over the past 22 years is to improve upon what we already have, and to learn and implement the newest and latest methods and technologies to offer the next level in the future of health care and healing.” - DR. RICHARD HILER, DC
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 20
eel Amazing Institute in Naples, FL was formed in 2015 by Dr. Richard Hiler, chiropractic neurologist and Dawna Hiler, RN. Formerly known as Hiler Chiropractic and Neurology for 17 years, the clinic integrated into medical services after Dr. Hiler had a life changing outcome using stem cell therapy on his lower back. For the past five years the clinic’s mission is to help others who have lost hope and have suffered with chronic joint pain or peripheral neuropathy. From low backs to knees, shoulders, hips, and nerve issues, the cutting-edge therapies used at Feel Amazing Institute have helped hundreds of people get their life back. The treatment approach is to use an arsenal of modalities and protocols to get the best outcome possible. When a patient tells Dr. Hiler they’ve already tried spinal decompression, or chiropractic, and it didn’t help, he inquires, “Well, did you try spinal decompression combined with stem cell allographs, exosomes, nano particles, ozone, prolotherapy, peptides, platelet rich plasma (PRP) and platelet poor protein concentrate? Did you use horizontal (electrical) therapy, infrared therapy, PEMF therapy, lasers, acoustic waves, and physical reconditioning along with the chiropractic?” The approach may sound complicated but the professionals at Feel Amazing Institute will streamline the process to make it doable, affordable, and effective. Dr. Hiler stresses the importance of treating the condition and the environment surrounding the condition to optimize the healing process and treat the whole person to transform each patient’s overall health status. For instance, the hip has 21 muscles crossing the joint, the knee 11, the shoulder has 14 movers and 7 stabilizers. We must address the length and strength of each muscle and the neurology that integrates with the function of that muscle. It is not optimal to just put stem cells in the joint or PRP and hope for the best. Regarding peripheral neuropathy, Dr. Hiler performs a comprehensive neurological examination of sensory, motor, and autonomic peripheral
nerve function, as well as the central neurological nerve control of the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Hiler developed the first comprehensive therapeutic program for peripheral neuropathy in SW Florida in 2005. He returned for 5 additional years of neurology training and received his board certification in functional neurology in 2013. In 2017, he developed one of the first regenerative cell treatment programs in the country using stem cell allografts. His first case study in 2017 was a 91-year-old patient that could not feel his legs for more than three years. After Dr. Hiler’s treatment he was feeling his legs again in less than a week and he was able to walk safely again without his walker. When regenerative cell treatment is administered to the damaged nerves in combination with other therapies, the improvement in pain, numbness, and sense of balance is often remarkable and long lasting. The push in today’s environment is the enhancement of the immune system, control of inflammation, and increasing the cellular capacity to produce energy to enhance normal function and repair. New products are available for this exact purpose for clinical use for the treatment of moderate to severe cases of Covid-19. It is extremely exciting and will be used at Hiler’s Feel Amazing Institute as a wellness treatment which effectively modulates immune function, reduces inflammation, and enhances cellular function and repair. These are the types of things that excite us as we continue to associate and learn from some of the world leaders in regenerative medicine, physical medicine, and preventative medicine. •

orn in Sri Lanka, I grew up in a family that considered natural medicine a way of life. henever I had a test in school my grandmother would make me Gotu Kola and give that to me for breakfast with brown rice. Gotu Kola is a brain nutrient. Throughout my life, I have always taken vitamins and supplements, and I believe there is more than one way to treat chronic disease. My goal is to teach and introduce people to various modalities to prevent disease. With this mindset, I designed my medical practice around Five Points of Wellness that must be incorporated into your lifestyle for longevity and optimal health. Here is a brief description of each:

SUPPLEMENTS. What are the basic nutrients everyone needs? 1. Probiotic – 80% of your immune system resides in your intestines. Prepare yourself for if and when you are exposed to COVID-19. If your body is ready and you have the right the nutrients, you’re not going to wind up in the hospital, your body can fight off these invaders. All three of my grandchildren were started on probiotics from day one of birth. 2. Vitamin D – get your blood levels checked. I do extensive blood testing on all of my patients as well as genetic and hormone testing. Nutrients are the things that make the engine run. on what I did want! As I thought back over my life, I realized that I’d been creating my reality since about the age of 14, I just didn’t realize what I was doing. When I was in 8th grade, I really liked this boy and every night I would imagine him asking me to this upcoming dance. I would visualize him calling me on the phone, what he would say, how excited I would be, what it would be like to be at the dance with him. I was creating in my mind a crystal-clear picture of this possible reality. The important thing was, I actually believed it was possible. Well, you can guess what happened. A week before the dance, he called and asked me to go. It played out exactly as I had imagined. Belief is a powerful thing that can work for you or against you. You can reach your wildest dreams if you believe you can, or you can remain stuck in the same old routine feeling unsatisfied and unfulfilled. If your mind is powerful enough to cause death – then what wonderful, amazing things can you do with it in this life?

Programs are based on a unique approach to wellness. Data has shown that people are very comfortable in their own environment (their home). Based on this concept, I see people in their homes and go through the 5-point plan with them. Prior to the 2-hour session, a prescription for extensive lab and genetic testing is sent to the patient. The majority of the treatment plan is based on the genetics of the individual. Based on this data, I am able to truly develop a customized program for the individual from weight loss to the exact nutrients they need to maintain optimal health. •
I
’m currently reading a thought-provoking book by Dr. Joe Dispenza, “You Are The Placebo.” Here’s just a snippet: “Is it possible to heal by thought alone – without drugs or surgery? There are numerous documented cases of those who reversed cancer, heart disease, depression and others who made amazing changes in their careers, relationships and families – just with the power of the mind.” I truly believe we haven’t even come close to harnessing this power. As long as I can remember, I’ve been insatiably curious about the way people think and how it shapes their lives. As an exercise physiologist, I’d spent years trying to educate people on how to change their bodies. I taught them the right kind of exercise to do, the right way to eat…the list goes on and on. While most people will lose weight, the percentage of people that keep that weight off permanently is slim. I finally realized that making a change in your life has nothing to do with how much knowledge you have about how to make that change. In the end, there is only one thing that matters. If you think you can make a change; that is the only way you’ll make it. It starts with a thought. After I got over that shock, I learned something so valuable. If I could create an unwanted reality, I most certainly could create a desired reality. If I was this good at creating what I didn’t want, what could I create if I really applied myself to focusing

SPIRITUALITY. This is my favorite. I have my patients do one good deed a day. It boosts your immune system by 40%. It also boosts the other person’s immune system along with every single person who witnesses it. That good deed is your spirit. We have got to change our spirit. Our genetics don’t change but our genes can get turned on or off to facilitate or prevent disease. We look at what is turning on and turning off your genes. This encompasses who you are, what you believe and what your attitude is. Do you have a good attitude? What is your outlook in life? I don’t agree with Billy Joel – the good don’t die young, they really don’t. Do one good deed a day, it’s so important for your physical and spiritual health, because it really can increase your longevity if you’re a good person. Have a gratitude practice. Think of one thing daily that you’re thankful for. You will actually feel better. When I graduated from medical school, the Dean said, “Make a difference in one person’s life and you will be considered a success in medicine.” I never forgot that. So, my goal has always been to make that difference in one person’s life throughout my practice.

The initial building on the property was built in 1921 as a small hotel to accommodate potential buyers for a local real estate development. The property changed hands many times over the years, and its mineral springs became a health-related focus. The present owners acquired the property in 1998 with a preservationist focus, but also with a goal to expand the holistic and naturalistic vision of some of the former owners of Shangri-La. Various classes featuring modalities such as yoga, dance and meditation complement visual and performing arts endeavors. bbington Green B&B Inn and Spa literally is a dream come true on so many different levels. As a guest, it’s a dream to stay there and trust me, you’ll never want to leave. For owners Nick Poulos and Steven Donahue, it was a dream to own an Inn. Nick’s parents inspired him to travel and see the world. They also taught him that you have one life and if you have a dream, figure out a way to make it happen. For 15 years, Nick kept a file folder of ideas, articles, and clippings of things he wanted in their Inn one day. He also kept meticulous notes on what he didn’t like in hotels and Inns that he stayed in. Nick’s 30-year retail career in Senior Management continued to develop his skills and would eventually financially support his dream. Nick lived in Raleigh and Charlotte, NC early in his career and frequently visited Asheville. “I think that’s when I fell in love with the beauty of Asheville, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and all there is to do in the area. I knew once I started looking for an Inn, Asheville was the place I wanted to be. The moment I walked into Abbington Green, it felt like home. The historic charm, the modern conveniences, and the close proximity to downtown encompassed what I wanted in an Inn,” says Nick. As his retail career progressed, he became Regional Vice President for Williams-Sonoma in the Southeast. This is where his passion for cooking grew. “I enjoy entertaining guests and friends.
There is nothing better than conversation and sharing stories while enjoying a delicious breakfast in the morning. How your day begins is important to me,” Nick said. Just to give you an idea of the kind of person Nick is, many of his past bosses and coworkers have come to experience the Inn. That’s pretty impressive. Was it scary to give up his corporate job, salary and stock options; of course, but he had to do it. Since then, he’s never regretted a day and has met the most amazing people from all over world. Many continue to return year after year and become part of the Abbington Green family. I can honestly say that’s exactly how I feel. This was our second stay at Abbington Green B&B Inn and I was so excited to return and see what new sustainable initiatives they had introduced. I was happy to hear that Nick had formulated his own line of cleaning products. What I didn’t expect to learn was that the reason was because he had developed an extreme allergy to what he had been using. His face and eyes began to swell up each time he used products with a certain type of preservative in them (specifically Polydimethylsiloxane which is found in most commercial cleaning products and many personal care products). He now uses his own personal mixture of castile soap, vinegar and essential oils. There are also no pesticides used in the gardens. If you want to learn more about Nick’s recipes – A

Taste of Abbington Green Cookbook – Volume 2 contains chemical free cleaning products. The other exciting news is the addition of a spa treatment room with two treatment tables. Nick converted the parlor into a spa exclusive to guests of the Inn. Guests can have individual or couples massage or choose from a wide selection of facials and skincare treatments with ZenJen products. ZenJen is made locally right in Asheville and is a formulation of organic, natural and plant based ingredients (www.zenjenskin.com). I had to ask Nick about all of the notes he kept and how he incorporated that into the Inn. He wanted to keep the main part of the house historic, while offering modern amenities in the rooms. What I was really interested in were the things about hotel rooms that bothered him and that he wanted to do differently – some of which I’d never even thought of until he mentioned it. Like providing two luggage racks, a charging station next to the bed (not halfway across the room), a sound machine, a quiet air conditioner where you can control your own temperature, extra blankets, two kinds of pillows both firm and soft, a heated towel bar, soft towels, a big bath sheet and regular bath towels. Probably the most unique amenity he’s thought of is a sensor light under the sink that goes on in the bathroom so you don’t have to turn on that annoying bright light in the middle of night! Clearly – he’s thought of everything. One of the best things about the Inn is Nick’s amazing cooking. At the nightly happy hour, you’ll enjoy a selection of local cheeses and homemade appetizers with local beer and Italian wine. But the breakfast – to die for!! As always, his menu depends on what is fresh, local, and in season. While we were there the two-course menu consisted of fresh watermelon and mint with fresh mint syrup made from their garden. The second course of deliciousness was blueberry banana pancakes with maple syrup sourced from Vermont but made in Asheville, and local sausage. On a personal note, it was an absolute pleasure to be able to stay at Abbington Green B&B Inn again with Nick, Steve, Carey and the staff. Out of all of the wonderful places we’ve stayed, this is at the top of my list. Nick’s attention to detail is world class. His passion, hospitality and genuine care for everyone that walks through his door is unmatched. I can’t think of a better place to dream away the day and night. •

h yes, here comes the sun. So warm, so beautiful, so life giving. How can such a beautiful, blazing star cause so much damage? Let’s look at the facts. As most of us now know, the sun can actually be good for you. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), getting anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes of sunlight on your arms, hands, and face two to three times per week is enough to reap the benefits of the sun. However, anything more can cause unwanted issues.

This truck driver took the brunt of the damage on the left side of his face because of his many hours behind the wheel. Maybe you’re not behind the wheel as much as a trucker, but you’re probably behind the wheel frequently…more than you realize. Have you ever felt the hot sun beating down on your face? Clearly the above picture is factual evidence proving too much sun will cause some degree of skin damage whether it be spring, summer, fall or winter. Immortal Opulence has a solution that addresses sun damaged skin and other factors of aging such as dry, wrinkled, sagging skin. There are many rare and wild ingredients in our formulation which penetrate deep into your skin and regenerate your skin at the cellular level without chemicals or synthetics. Immortal Opulence contains essential oils such as Red Rasberry Seed Oil and Carrot Seed Oil. Our carefully researched, family farm grown, Red Rasberry Seed Oil and our Carrot Seed Oil will effectively moisturize, improve skin elasticity, improve smoothness, reduce wrinkles and skin lines, and give you that elusive healthy glow. These oils penetrate deep into the skin to reduce wrinkles, repair damage, hydrate dry skin, lighten age spots, and reduce the “leathery” appearance of your neck, chest, and hands from too many unnecessary hours in the sun. These ingredients create a high-performance skin reparative cream. Chemicals won’t do the job and in fact can make skin matters worse. If you use a pure, clean, chemical-free sun block of SPF 15 or higher, combined with Immortal Opulence skin cream, you will have established a solid defense from skin destruction and accelerated skin aging. “Everyone can benefit from yoga,” insists Tom Palmer, Owner. “People shouldn’t feel they need to be in shape for an Iron Man competition to participate. afety is top of mind as fitness facilities reopen post the COVID-19 shutdown. Many are anxious to get back to taking care of their bodies, wellbeing, and mental health. Our Yoga Place (OYP), which opened in January 2020, was designed to tackle the nasty environmental issues prevalent in all indoor fitness centers. OYP specializes in hot yoga, which amplifies the need for fresh outside air circulating throughout the facility. As OYP reopens in a new world, it is exciting to highlight how the facility was specifically designed with safety in mind. While there is not a 100% effective way to eliminate all airborne viruses, OYP uses technologies that heat, circulate, ventilate, and sterilize the air in the yoga studios, locker rooms, and surfaces. This sets a brand-new standard for safe indoor fitness facilities. Hot Yoga classes run in studios heated at 105°F (40.5C) with at least 40% relative humidity to increase yoga’s effects on muscles and various systems of the body. In addition to the resulting sweat produced under such conditions, people expel higher levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) thanks to elevated heart rates. As more CO2 fills the room, less oxygen becomes available, making it harder to breathe. OYP systems continuously monitor CO2 levels and adjust ventilation to keep the air in the rooms breathable for participants. It’s easy for ventilation and temperature control to become significantly unbalanced if the HVAC is not properly aligned to bring in enough fresh air while sending stale “bad” air out of the building, now a heightened area of concern post COVID-19. OYP’s high thermal efficiency energy recovery units deliver balanced ventilation that controls humidity. Such superior ventilation keeps CO2 levels as low as possible by ushering out stale “used” air and using the heat energy of that air to warm incoming fresh air. Equally important as air quality, OYP installed cutting edge commercial grade ultraviolet devices throughout yoga and locker room facilities.
These devices are widely utilized in the food processing and preparation industries, as well as “clean” room laboratories. OYP is the first yoga facility to utilize this technology. Antimicrobial disinfection through illumination is proven effective with proper dosage levels on pathogens suspended in air or attached to a variety of surfaces, materials, and objects. SpectraClean™ leverages developments in the disciplines of lighting science and microbiology to combine white and narrowband 405 nanometer visible light. The germicidal effects of narrowband visible light suppress a wide range of bacteria, molds, fungi and yeast. SpectraClean’s antimicrobial light induces the production of damaging reactive oxygen species in harmful microorganisms to accelerate cell inactivation. Finally, the yoga room flooring used is PEM Surface Flooring. The recycled material is treated with an antimicrobial formula that guards against the growth of mildew, fungi, and bacteria. The durable thermoplastic construction is designed for the moisture and humidity of hot yoga studios. It has shock absorbing cushion for less stress on the body and reduces the risk of slippage. With all of these new systems in place, OYP creates a safe and environmentally friendly facility for students. •

Winning the Inner Battle By Megan Moriarty, Certified Hypnotherapist
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 33
a chocolate treat whenever she was upset, sad or lonely. Throughout her childhood, she loved these treats because in the moment they gave her joy and a sense of relief. After repeating this pattern for years, it became a part of her subconscious programming without her even knowing it. She now automatically goes for the sweets whenever she is experiencing a negative emotion. Growing up, this behavior didn’t affect her weight, but now that she’s older the chocolate treats seem to be the main culprit for her weight gain. She consciously wants to lose weight, be healthier, and feel more attractive, but she can’t stop eating sweets no matter what she does! This inner battle drives her crazy and she feels like she has no willpower and negatively judges herself. The vicious cycle of losing a few pounds just to put them back on keeps her trapped in a frustrating reality. Can you relate this scenario in any area of your life? Have you ever had a deep desire to create a positive change but felt like you were your own worst enemy? In one way or another, this story relates to all of my Hypnotherapy clients. Most people want to expand and develop themselves but are struggling against deep, subconscious programming that they are not even aware. There is an easy solution to this inner battle. It is natural, pain-free and highly effective. Hypnosis is the ultimate state for creating permanent change at a subconscious level. In this relaxed, peaceful state the subconscious mind easily accepts new, positive suggestions that align with your conscious desires. Once the positive suggestions are accepted, the battle is resolved. 100% of your mind is on board with your goals and deepest desires. This kicks willpower out of the equation and makes positive change easy and automatic. It is time to end the war against yourself and utilize the power of hypnosis to become the happiest, healthiest version of you. •
Megan Moriarty, Certified Hypnotherapist considers herself a professional belief enhancer. Through hypnosis, she guides clients to break through limiting habits and beliefs. After working together, you will embody the belief that you are the powerful creator of your life that can manifest anything you desire. 860.808.4672. www.meganmoriarty.com. info@ megan-moriarty.com.

o you ever feel like you are in a war against yourself to create the change that you desire? Do you want to lose weight but can’t resist the sweets? Do you want to kick a bad habit but have tried countless times with no luck? From a Hypnotherapist’s standpoint, this is not your fault. This inner conflict happens because your conscious desires are fighting against your subconscious programming. What most people don’t know is that your conscious mind, where all of your thinking takes place, makes up only 12% of your mind; the other 88% is made up of your subconscious mind. When I first tell clients this they are baffled. How could their 60,000+ daily thoughts make up only 12% of their brainpower? It all comes back to automatic behaviors and thought patterns. You live the majority of your life on autopilot. You do not have to put a lot of thought into performing daily tasks like driving your car or performing your morning routine. These are automatic; you do them without thinking. All of your automatic behaviors and thoughts are stored in your subconscious mind. This deep part of your mind also stores your knowns. As humans, we are motivated towards what we already know because it is usually an easier option that takes less energy. You are more likely to take your usual route to work rather than taking a new direction every drive. Automatic behavior and having stored knowns do make life easier. If you had to relearn routine tasks or what you liked and disliked daily, you would not be able to function efficiently. However, we often have stored information in our subconscious mind that no longer serves us. This is where the 12% of your mind (conscious mind) fights the more powerful 88% (subconscious mind). If you are fighting someone seven times more powerful than you, do you think you have a high chance of winning? An example of this 12% vs. 88% battle is a woman who grew up with parents who gave her

Salt Cave Therapy

“Salt therapy helps with strengthening the immune system and improving lung function to build an inhospitable terrain for COVID-19.” - Andrea Geresdi
I
n 2009, Andrea Geresdi had a dream (the kind you have while sleeping). In her dream, she was standing in a beautiful salt cave. The dream was so powerful, she woke up and immediately woke her husband and said to him, “We have to build a salt cave!” A week later they had ordered twenty tons of Himalayan Salt. Her story is one of belief, persistence, and laser beam focus. At first, they couldn’t find anyone who would lease space to a couple that wanted to haul twenty tons of salt in and build a salt cave in an office building. Understandable. But Andrea didn’t give up. “Sometimes, I feel like life tests you to see how bad you really want something,” she said. I couldn’t agree more after trying to launch this magazine during COVID-19! We also agreed that when something is supposed to happen, then things will eventually fall into place. And so it happened that she did find a space, twice the size she was looking for, which allowed her to expand into providing more treatment rooms to offer Biofeedback, massage therapy, light therapy, far-infrared sauna and a lovely shop with crystals, jewelry and salts for purchase. It all happens exactly as it should and Andrea and Peter opened the first salt cave in the US in 2009.

ma, bronchitis, colds, Cystic Fibrosis and sinus conditions. The skin benefits from salt cave therapy include decrease of itching, reduction of edema on post-surgical scars, reduction and clearing of inflammation of the skin. Psychological and emotional benefits include reducing stress, relaxation and rejuvenation. Research shows salt cave therapy normalizes certain levels in the brain, improving a person’s positive outlook and mood. Negative ions also help you sleep by regulating your serotonin secretion, reduce headaches and sickness and increases the flow of oxygen to the brain resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy.
DH: What can clients expect at Salt Cave Naples?
AG: I want my clients to feel at home when they come here. They have two options on how they can use our center: 1. Spa services: Clients can pick and choose what they feel they need from our menu of many amazing spa services like massage, sauna, detox foot bath, or spiritual healing. 2. Wellness clinic: Clients can start with a non-invasive bioenergetic body scan with our EPFX/QXCI Biofeedback System.
DH: Tell us more about Biofeedback, it sounds fascinating!
AG: Biofeedback is a new field of energy medicine that addresses the electrical properties of the body through stress reactivity testing of the entire energetic body field. It’s a non-invasive

way to gather data about weak areas in your body. Once tested, energetic therapy helps to neutralize disease and imbalances to harmonize the system. Our therapy works to relieve stress by balancing physical trauma and emotional trauma by stimulating the mind to naturally balance the body. The QXCI and the SCIO technology offers a rapid, comprehensive and guided approach for health care. It can provide answers to many questions, such as what foods to eat, if exposed to environmental toxins, and any chemical sensitivities one may have. EPFX/QXCI can: • De-stress the body and mind • Strengthen the immune system • Boost vitality and stamina • Relieve pain • Sharpen memory and clarity • Balance hormones
AG: We offer Biostimulation, which is a form of Electrotherapy that utilizes electrical impulses to rejuvenate and reshape the body. It uses advanced microtechnology that electrically stimulates the muscles through the skin. The therapy can be applied for purposes of muscle

Our Ionic Detox Foot Bath Neutralizes and eliminates toxins from the body with ions. Ionic detox foot baths work by sending a small current that goes in a circuit through the body and generates negatively charged ions in the water. Your body absorbs millions of these negatively charged ions, which alkalize the blood and tissue. The high concentration of the ion field attaches to the positively charged toxins neutralizing them and the body is then able to discard them through the approximate 2000 pores that are on the bottom of your feet. Detox foot baths can assist with enhancing the immune system; speeding up the recovery time from injuries and surgery; relieving arthritic pain; improving sleep patterns; removing heavy metals and blood clot material; and the improvement of liver and kidney function. We also offer lymphatic therapies and weight reduction treatments. •

DH: Tell us about some of the other treatments you offer?
Polarized Light Therapy is a device that acts to regenerate cellular activity by the use of polarized light. The healing power of polarized light works in the treatment of general health disorders, is a therapeutic use of artificial light as a source of well-being, relieves pain and accelerates wound healing and repair of broken bones and is a revolutionary skin care device that works to alleviate cellulite, wrinkles and acne among others. We are beginning to realize that we keep breathing polluted air, are eating “poisoned” food, and drinking impure water. But so far, most of us have overlooked one of the most important life-giving forces – LIGHT. Membrane activity is enhanced on a cellular level, along with stimulation of the metabolism and regenerative processes. Damaged tissues are then regenerated and normalized as a result of changes on the cellular level. The organism as a whole is then able to experience a wide range of therapeutic effects with practically no contraindications or known undesirable side effects. Polarized light ideally completes traditional forms of treatment and is distinguished by non-contact, antiseptic application.

This technology is based on over 20 years of research in bio-energetic and bio-resonance medicine. It works naturopathically to stimulate and harness the tremendous capacity of the human body. Since biochemical processes are fundamentally electrical in nature, this computerized system can measure the subtle energetic information in your body, correlating it to thousands of health indicators, quantifying imbalances, and locating precursors to disease, allergies, and environmental sensitivities with computer accuracy. It works by measuring minute electromagnetic signals of our bodies down to the cellular level. In essence, it reduces stress and stressors in our bodies, like toxins and pathogens, which can therefore remove energy blockages and boost immune function. Simply by freeing up these energy blockages and boosting immune function, you unleash the body’s natural power to heal itself.

The Herbal Treatment for ESSENTIAL Naples
Sleep Apnea By Steven Frank
SUMMER 2020
36 “The appropriate solution to prevent sleep apnea is to increase the ability of the brain to communicate with the diaphragm so that you breathe deeply and steadily throughout the night.” - Steven Frank
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 36
S
leep apnea is one of the most common sleep disturbance problems in America. It ruins the sleep of 25 million Americans with likely millions more un-diagnosed sufferers. The condition prevents the sleeper from entering REM and Delta sleep causing them to become anxious, cantankerous and tired during the day. There are very serious health consequences of prolonged sleep disturbance and deprivation. When diagnosed, the patient is told to lose weight, drink less alcohol and quit smoking. Beyond that, surgery is offered, though it is painful and has provided only limited success. Dental mouth-pieces can be difficult to sleep with and long-term effects on tooth alignment are questionable. Another common option is CPAP. This is a forced air mask, worn during sleep, that insures proper inhalation. Experience has shown that 60% of patients are not able to tolerate the mask and ultimately discontinue using the equipment. Some users develop respiratory infections from the mask. Finally, there is an herbal and natural approach that we can explore.
What Causes Sleep Apnea?
Before we evaluate the “solutions”, let’s consider what is causing the condition. When we begin to fall asleep, we move from stage one (drowsiness) into stage two sleep. Stage two sleep is the transition stage before entering REM (rapid eye movement). REM sleep is where we dream. Dreaming is critical to a good night’s sleep. When we enter stage two sleep in preparation for dreaming, muscular activity is inhibited (blocked). It is called “reduction of muscle tonus”. This is a function that occurs primarily to keep the dreamer from physi-
cally acting out the movements of their dreams. The first problem is that the inhibition of signals from the brain tends (inadvertently) to reduce the signal that tells the diaphragm to breathe. In some individuals, upon entering stage 2 sleep, the breathing will actually come to a stop (Sleep Apnea means cessation of breathing.) As breathing becomes shallower, the blood oxygen level drops and the carbon dioxide levels rise. In a young and healthy individual, this would elicit stronger and deeper breathing from the physiological control system that regulates these activities. In an older individual the respiration reduces in intensity and the blood oxygenation drops. This is where the safety back-up system comes in. When the blood gas levels get too far imbalanced, the brain intervenes and causes the body to make a large and immediate inhalation. This causes a large pressure differential in the pharynx and literally sucks the sagging-soft palate into the airway. This obstructs the air flow and causes a loud “SNORT” partially or fully awakening the subject. Most times, the subject is not fully awakened and thus isn’t aware that this is even happening. It still disturbs their sleep enough so that they return to stage 1 sleep. Upon awakening or returning to stage 1 sleep, the inhibition causing the reduction of muscle tonus for entry into stage two sleep is released and respiration begins again in a somewhat normal manner. As the subject starts to drift off to sleep again, they move into stage two, the muscle tonus drops, the soft palate sags, the signal to the diaphragm diminish and the cycle repeats. The resulting snorting awakenings typically occur every 1 to 5 minutes or so.

LOBELLIA when used in small doses, acts as a respiratory stimulant. It has been used for thousands of years to treat respiratory conditions. This herb, when taken before bed, can actually increase the quiescent level of respiration sufficiently so as to avert the dangerous drop in blood oxygen level that occurs upon muscular inhibition. It can maintain deep steady breathing throughout the stage 2 sleep period.
Let’s Get Moving Again!
ESSENTIAL Naples
If your breathing was sufficiently deep enough, then you would not make a rapid inhalation, suck your soft palate into the airway and snort; disturbing your sleep. The appropriate solution is to accentuate (increase) the ability of the brain to communicate with the diaphragm so that you breathe deeply and steadily throughout the night. Sure it is beneficial to strengthen the muscles of the soft palate. Yes, it is advantageous to reduce muscular tension in the neck. Both of these things will make a noticeable improvement in the condition. In fact, some foods like wheat products and cheese should not be eaten near to bed time as they can cause congestion which aggravates the condition. However, the most dramatic impact can be made by the administration of just a few common herbs.

he gains in the market have lasted for 15 straight months, and now the thrill of the ride has been swept from under our feet. I have started to go through my own catharsis with the stages of grief. The denial was the most fun, I have to admit. Like adolescents, we all started this arduous journey with disbelief and a laissez-faire attitude. I might have even been a tad rebellious. Of course, being of Middle-Eastern descent didn’t help; I had always stood strong against the control taken from myself and my sisters as we grew up. I wasn’t going to let this disease stop me. We rolled our eyes at the first people who wore masks. We insisted that this would be over in a week, and many even compared this pandemic to a flu. We were brazen...until we started to witness local businesses close before our eyes. An invisible enemy laser-focused on taking our health and our livelihoods. We did purposeful planning and things as simple as beneficiary check-ups so that we were always sure to have all bases covered. These are the times we did all of these things for. The power of having a plan elevates you from the pandemonium of a pandemic. We don’t know how long this will last and we don’t know if it will rear its ugly head once more with a vengeance. But here is what we do know: A volatile market could have you rethinking some long-held retirement plans. Before you make any moves, take these steps to check your plan and/or put it back on track.
Step 1:
Step 3:
The key determinant of retirement readiness is balancing withdrawals to supply enough money to live on, but not imperil your plan’s sustainability. If your balance has dropped, assess whether a 3%-4% initial withdrawal amount is enough to supply your desired living expenses. Additionally, because the market could drop even further, it is reasonable to stress-test withdrawals even further.
If your plan looks uncomfortably tight based on your findings from Steps 1 and 2, there are a few adjustments you can make to get it on track. The most obvious is to delay retirement, continue making contributions, and defer spending from your portfolio. Deferring withdrawals helps ensure that you are not pulling from a declining portfolio; and making additional contributions can add up. Also take time to consider your in-retirement budget. Downsizing and/or relocating to a different geography can deliver a high payoff.
Stress-Test Planned Withdrawals
Step 2:
Weave in Your Social Security Strategy
It is a good sign if your portfolio withdrawals look sufficient after factoring in the potential for further losses. However, you should also maximize non-portfolio income sources like Social Security. Enlarge your eventual benefit by delaying Social Security filing. After all, the roughly 8% guaranteed benefit increase is difficult to match with investment products.
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 38
Determine Whether You Need to Course-Correct
Step 4:
Assess Your Asset Allocation Relative to Your Drawdown Plan
Turn your attention to your portfolio’s asset allocation based on your proximity to retirement and your planned spending. Focus on your portfolio’s weighting in cash
and high-quality bonds. The yields on such investments have shriveled, but bonds and cash have historically held their value in periods of equity market weakness.
Step 5:
Take Steps to Improve Your Tax Position
With balances down, converting a portion of traditional IRA assets to Roth can make sense, in that you will have more assets available that are not subject to taxes or required minimum distributions upon withdrawals. However, IRA conversions are not for everyone; some investors are better off paying taxes in retirement, at lower tax rates, than when they are working. I spend my life and my love planning for the people I care about most. •

8 Secrets
to Find Lasting Love Online By Ronnie Ann Ryan

Post Great Photos. Your pictures are the first thing people see, so don’t post selfies. Choose flattering outfits that you’d wear on a dinner date. Feminine, form-fitting clothing will catch his eye, along with bright, solid colors, makeup and heels. And, no kids, animals, or other people in the shots because that is distracting.
3
Reach Out to Men. Don’t rely on matches the dating sites send. Do your own search and contact 3-5 men when you get online. Send a short message that asks a single question. If you’re on dating apps, don’t swipe right on 100 men. Try 20 and save some for the next session. Don’t say, “I like your profile” or “We have so much in common.” Everyone says that! If you want a response, be engaging or clever. For example, if a man likes hiking and you do too, say, “I see you like hiking – me too. What’s your favorite spot?”
01 ESN Layout v5.indd 39

Get Clear on What You Want. Think about the kind of person you want. Are you looking for a kind, generous, and fun partner? Maybe someone with an active, healthy lifestyle? Are faith and politics a must? What kind of relationship do you seek? What are your deal breakers? Clarity is essential to recognize a good match.
6
Talk by Phone & Videochat. You can learn a lot from a brief conversation. Listen to the sound of his voice and ease of conversation. Consider your comfort level with the person and if he seems confident. Even 15 minutes is enough to get a good idea if you want to meet. With social distancing, videochat has become very popular and a productive extra step.
39 SUMMER 2020
Write a Short Profile. The best profile is less than 300 words and doesn’t describe everything about you. It’s written conversationally, as if you were talking which makes it fun to read. Your profile has only one purpose – to get someone to send you an email. How do you write a captivating profile? Avoid lists, starting every sentence with “I” or talking about what you don’t want. Stay positive and share highlights about your life that a prospect would find interesting.
4
Know What to Expect. Understanding what to expect will keep things real and prevent disappointment. Everyone gets a low response rate of 10 – 20% at the most. This is NORMAL. Many people start out interested and then disappear, it’s not only happening to you.

any singles despise online dating. They don’t like how few people respond or all the texting and confusion when connections disappear. It’s not perfect but looking for love on the web is a highly useful tool that millions of people use successfully when you know how to make the most of it. And now with Covid-19, it’s the safest way to start meeting the prospects. Understanding what to expect and what is considered “normal” will make navigating the process easier. This is written from a woman’s perspective, but most tips work for men too.
7
Cut Your Losses. Many singles text, but never meet. To avoid this, limit emailing and texting to seven days prior to meeting. If you haven’t met, suggest it! Send a message saying, “Emailing/texting is fun but let’s try a video date to see if we have chemistry.” If he makes excuses or is too busy, STOP communicating. He is NOT serious.
8
Lift Your Energy. There are five elements that must align to find lasting love online. Your profile, photos, skill at interacting, activity level and your ENERGY! Before you get online, center yourself, imagine being with your ideal mate and how wonderful that feels. With the right mindset, you send out good vibes which come back to you. Uplift your energy before you reach out and your results will definitely improve. It’s hard to argue with the positive results and statistics that online dating delivers. Over 30% of relationships now start on the web including sites, apps and social media. •

t will be uncomfortable, but it’s essential that we have an honest, informed conversation about the proper role of government in a perceived public health crisis. First, shouldn’t we have some criteria that establishes the need for extreme interventions? And second, who can we trust to provide the evidence based information we need to make sensible decisions? When the 2020 statistics are in, it’s quite likely we’ll learn that the knee-jerk reactions from bureaucrats and politicians will have produced a far greater toll on human life than the pandemic itself. For over two months, cancer screenings, pain therapies and other “non-essential” medical services were put on hold. People who were afraid to go to the ER waited too long to address heart attack and stroke symptoms, suicide hotline calls exceeded the previous twelve months and people are still waiting in food lines because they can’t feed their families. We cannot deny that the economy is intricately related to public health. During hard financial times the potential for health neglect, malnutrition, suicide, physical abuse, alcoholism, drug abuse and overdose is significantly increased. Many small businesses won’t survive this year, many jobs will never come back, fear and isolation are causing severe mental anguish, graduates will be starting their new lives in a recession, parents are wondering what kind of schools their children will return to – and all of this is for a virus that will never compare to the number of deaths from heart disease, cancer or even as the 2018 John Hopkins study suggests, medical errors. Without engaging in a war of statistics or arguing that hindsight is 20/20, let’s examine the evidence we have thus far and begin talking about sensible ways to go forward. We have over six months of data from around the world, and CDC statistics from the past three months in the US pinpoint exactly which populations are vulnerable and which are not. The natural laws of virology have not changed, only the politics have. Since a virus must run out of hosts before it “burns out”, why prolong the potential for natural herd immu-
nity for an infection that is benign for an estimated 97-99% of the population? Whether from natural antibody building or vaccination, the principle is the same – the vulnerable are best protected when herd immunity is high. So, how can we protect the vulnerable in the interim and let the rest of the world return to normal; and what if there is still potential for a major outbreak? For starters, let’s be honest about the arbitrary shuttering of medical and commerce activities. Very few of us were able to completely isolate ourselves for the entire two and half months of “lockdown” in FL. It is likely that our heightened awareness and changes in personal hygiene habits helped us reduce our viral loads or avoid contagion more than any mandated “social distancing measures” did. Even masks are a topic we must logically explore from all angles. For the first four weeks of lockdown we were still being told not to wear masks and yet, mask-less essential workers survived those weeks without a major outbreak among them. So, just from a common-sense observation, how much benefit might masks offer? Is it possible that masks might even be dangerous for many people? Epidemiologists, doctors and respiratory therapists have expressed their concerns. Some tweaks to public policies are still in order, but most “social distancing” measures for the general population still have no concrete data and probably never will. It’s just not one of those things that can be accurately measured or compared because of the arbitrary applications and the variances in human behavior. If future outbreaks are a concern, we should identify and designate COVID centers so that the bulk of our hospitals and medical facilities could continue uninterrupted. We could implement better sanitation practices such as Air/Surface Scrubbers in nursing homes, medical centers and even businesses. Proven effective technology exists and is quite affordable, even to a small business. We could eliminate the need to shutter medical and commerce activities by continuing to protect and isolate the vulnerable with sensible

but not draconian measures. For instance, stores could continue to have dedicated hours for senior shoppers, and restaurants could have dedicated sections that are set up for those who need to social distance. Schools and colleges could return to normal as statistics demonstrate, and epidemiologists agree, that children and young people are not significantly impacted by this virus. Online classes or special social distancing classrooms could be setup for those students who may be vulnerable or who live with someone at risk. Throughout this crisis, there is no denying that politicians acted to protect their own reputations with a total disregard for the unintended consequences of their actions. Bureaucracies stood in the way of supplies, testing and accurate information. Politicians acted on media hype and projections that turned out to be overestimated by astronomical proportions and then refused to relax their heavy-handed mandates because the media continued to drive the fear deeper into the minds of the populace - every hour of every day. How could politicians contradict the media, or worse – admit they were wrong? If we don’t have these conversations about the facts now that we have statistics available and discuss our future, will mainstream media, bureaucrats and politicians be brazen enough to do this to us again? Or worse – could they mandate some type of medical procedure under the guise of critical protection? Let’s put political divergence aside and talk objectively about the impact from this crisis and the proper roles of individuals, business and government. We the People CAN be trusted with many more decisions than politicians give us credit for. •

ind a partner,” one of the facilitators said. “When you do, draw an invisible line between the two of you and each take a turn trying to get the other to cross over to your side.” This was the icebreaker exercise that introduced a forty-hour mediation and conflict-resolution certificate training sponsored by the law school of the university near where I live. I registered for the course in the midst of a career change; a couple of years after leaving an executive job in non-profit management and before a dive ahead into the world of alternative healing and neo-shamanic studies, where I landed as a mediator of an entirely different sort, one who parlayed between the visible and invisible worlds. The attendees were mostly attorneys expanding their skills to meet the growing demand for non-adversarial, collaborative alternatives to handling personal, business, and community disputes. Others came from human-resource, civil-service, and advocacy backgrounds. Besides the lone ombudsman, I was the odd one out with no affiliation or title. My only real mediation experience was as a kid, being caught in a tug of war by parents who battled more with silence than shouting before they eventually split when I was twelve. As I looked around for a partner for the icebreaker, my eyes caught the gaze of a friendly guy I’d talked to earlier. He’d recently completed his law degree and was looking to open a family-law practice. “You go first, Don,” I said, taking a few steps back from the imagined line we had drawn between us. “Sure thing… Well … so Pat, how about coming over here to my side of the line? You look a little lonely over there.” I smiled tolerantly at what sounded to me like a lame pickup line.
“Well,” Don said while clearing his throat, “it’s a real great view from over here. I know you can’t see what I see from where you’re standing.” He glanced left and right with an exaggerated look of marvel on his face. “In fact, it’s so wonderful, you really need to see it from my perspective.” Don held out his hand as if to pull me across the imaginary line. I decided to play the role of devil’s advocate. “You know, Don, I’m really happy that it all looks good on your side of the line. But I like it over here. I may pay you a visit one day, but right now, I don’t want to give up what I have.” After a little back and forth, Don recognized I wasn’t ever going to concede and gave up. Around us, all sorts of negotiations were occurring among our classmates, from the half-comic to the wildly exaggerated. People were breaking the ice and having fun, obviously taking advantage of the permission to act in ways they usually suppressed. One man pulled a wallet out of his suit-jacket pocket and tried to bribe his partner across the line. The various spirits of conflict rose, gleefully liberated, on this makeshift stage in the shadow of a statue of Lady Justice, unleashing the separation stored in the collective DNA of all of the wanna-be mediators in the room. As I prepared to take my turn at the icebreaker task, I knew I needed to go beyond the various charades of seduction, power struggle, logical appeal, bribe, and threat to find another approach. I looked at Don, put my hand in my pretend back pocket, and wrapped my fingers around something invisible. I dropped into a squat and rubbed the pretend item in a zigzag over the highly polished wood floor. I stood up, placed the mimed object back in my pocket where it came from, and smiled across at Don.

“What was that all about?” he asked with a dumbfounded expression as he tried to maintain his best bridge-builder, fledgling-mediator tone. “Well,” I replied, after careful pause to select my words, still trying to digest my own response and surprise at what I did, which seemed to rise from a deeper memory stored in the ancient, collective DNA of the room, “we drew an imaginary line together, didn’t we? So, I just took out an imaginary eraser and erased the imaginary line.” It was an automatic response that came from beyond thought. It was instinctive, like something an animal might do, to rewind and access the point before separation ever began, rather than to cleverly employ habitual approaches that seemed often to repeat history rather than transcend it. I was reminded that day of the mythic Garden story held precious by Judeo-Christian culture. Eden was the place where self-awareness dawned (along with fear) after eating the forbidden fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. It was the ultimate metaphor that traced how human beings moved from living in harmony with nature in the land of “And” to the land of “Or,” from which the story of separation has radiated ever since. Now it’s sped up to meet us in the garden of 2020, where “we’re in it together” has become the buzz phrase in a year of uncertainty, suffering, protest and imposed change. At this halfway point of summer, maybe it’s time to dig beneath the layers of human-centric falsehood to expose even a peek of the well hidden paradise. Maybe it’s time that the land of And and Or call us home to our rightful place in the garden, without trading the gifts of distinction, difference and self-apart-from-other awareness. Time will certainly tell. But maybe, just maybe, as the sun rewinds and days inch shorter again, 20/20 vision will be restored so we can finally reclaim our rightful place in the garden. After all, we’re in it together. •

Where Do You Want To Go and How Does a Wound Heal?

“If you were not loved as an infant there are probably many things you fear and also find it difficult to seek goodness and love because you are not tuned in to that mode of communication and relationship.” - Bernie Siegel, MD

T
he title of this article may not seem to make sense but believe me the topics do relate to each other. I heard the first question from someone who was in the White House when the Pentagon was hit by the plane the terrorists took control of on 9/11. The White House was evacuated and when this person got into a cab the cabby turned and asked, “Where do you want to go?” It made her think about her life. Where are we safe? Where do you want to go with your life? Why are you here? I think we each need to define for ourselves what life is about and understand why we are here. I believe we are here to serve and one needs to define who we are here to serve, how and when. Who is the lord you serve? For many it is a lord of accumulation and impressing others, but believe me that will not bring happiness or meaning into your life. I know from my experience counseling people who learn they are mere mortals and then truly begin to live a meaningful life. This begins to happen when we seek goodness in the world and do not project our inadequacies upon others. It happens when we stop making excuses and make meaningful choices about how we live and when we stop seeing evil and envying others. Then your life changes and you go in a meaningful direction with it. If you live in fear this is hard to do. So ask yourself another question. What am I afraid of? If you were not loved as an infant there are probably many things you fear and also find it difficult to seek goodness and love because you are not tuned in to that mode of communication and relationship. I hadn’t thought of it but I bet there are people who never consider themselves worthy of a massage or are afraid to be touched because of their treatment as infants. The ones who never have time to sit down for a few minutes of chair massage let alone an hour on the massage table. They are not capable of receiving love because they never experienced it. Their nervous system is different from the one of a child who has been loved.
Many of you are aware that a mother is changed by breastfeeding both physically and psychologically and the infant is changed by breastfeeding and even a pacifier. A woman who breastfeeds loses weight faster after delivery as she gives of her body to nourish her child. She produces more oxytocin, the ‘love’ hormone and feels the love and bonding with her infant. The infant also produces more oxytocin and feels loved and connection to his or her mother and gains weight faster than an infant tube fed the exact same number of calories without a pacifier. If a pacifier is given the weight gain increases even with tube feedings. When we study the heart we see why these wounds of childhood are hard to heal. More studies are showing that the heart is not merely a pump. We all are aware of the stories of memories being carried with transplanted hearts from the donor’s life experience to the organ recipient’s consciousness. When the heart is forming it contains nerve cells like the brain and glandular cells like an endocrine organ and so it functions as more than a muscle. I would add that even as a pump there is a reason a heart rate of 60 is beneficial when you study rhythms and their effect on the body. To truly heal one must be a part of the minority who were loved as children, or become educated and open to love due to a loss or major illness, reparent oneself and stop being afraid of experiencing life and vulnerability. If you know who you are, you are not vulnerable to the thoughts and actions of others. The ugly duckling had a hell of a life and was a part of the small minority who make it on their own, but he did, and you can too. •
Bernie Siegel, MD is an American writer and retired pediatric surgeon, who writes on the relationship between the patient and the healing process. He is known for his bestselling book Love, Medicine and Miracles. www.berniesiegelmd.com.
