he following are references to reallife relationship situations that occurred in sessions. Thanks to some of my clients for these examples. I made sure that I knew enough background before commenting on the following. Of course these are partial responses and issues were thoroughly discussed. “After he hurt my feelings and we talked about it, we were in the den and I was sitting right next to him. I gave him the opportunity to tell me how sorry he was and just hold me and be loving.” What I heard in that second sentence: “I gave him the opportunity to use osmosis to think with my brain, instead of being direct about what I needed.” “I don’t understand why she doesn’t pay the bills in the way that makes the most sense. I even explained the whole process to her”. What was reflected back: “Because she is your opposite, she does many things much differently than you. That is something that attracted you to her”. “I don’t understand why it takes her hours to shop; I know what is needed, I can just go and get something and come home.” My response: “Because she shops differently than you and enjoys walking down each isle, taking her time”.

“I know that what I did hurt him. I’ve listened, apologized and just want to move on. Why can’t he just let it go?” My observation: “What she’s feeling is very human; she can’t just switch off her strong feelings. She needs time to process and move forward. No one but her can decide when she’s over it. This is part of the consequences that you both face. You can ask her how you can help but the rest is something you both have to give time.” “I don’t know why she has to avoid people so much and cancel plans with her friends. I love to hang around with friends.” What I explained: “She loves people, but unlike you, they overwhelm her as she is sensitive to their energy and she needs more time to herself to recharge between social situations”. “Why does he always have to try to fix things for me? Why can’t he just listen and understand? He always seems to be telling me what to do differently.” My suggestion: “Perhaps he is protective and compassionate toward you and wants to help you with a solution to your problems. It may help to gently ask him to tell you that he feels bad for you because it’s an awful situation - before he offers other options”.

“She always has to talk to other people at events and leaves me sitting alone. She makes me feel like I’m not important to her”. My response: “You know that by nature she is a social butterfly who loves her family and friends. She adores you and would love for you to make the rounds with her. She always comes back to you, but she just doesn’t sit quietly away from the social activity as much as you prefer to. I suggest asking her to connect with you at the beginning of an event with a gesture of affection and reassurance. Also, discuss a compromise so she can socialize and the two of you can spend some time together during the event”. Have a question for Chris? He included in this relationship both bliss and conflict. Bliss is intended to give us a glimpse of God the Son and His bride the church. Conflict is included in the relationship to refine those involved and help the couple look more like Jesus on earth. Marriage should include both and God designed marriage to include both! The issue is not, therefore, your comfort but doing marriage God’s way. To this God gives us a blueprint for a couple to enjoy the bliss and endure the conflicts. The husband must fulfill his role and the wife must fulfill hers. If only one is accomplishing their God-given role, there will be little bliss and it will make conflicts harder. Point is: it takes two to make One work. Each must do their role. So God again provides us detail for a blissful and enduring marriage. The Apostle Paul pens some wonderful work for mutual submission in a marriage in Ephesians 5. After a man is filled and controlled by the Holy Spirit, he can then go on with the Spirit’s help to love his wife with a Christ-kind of giving and sacrificial love. After a woman is filled and controlled by the Holy Spirit, she can then go on with the Spirit’s help to respect and submit to her husband. When both are filled and formed by the Spirit, the result is a blissful marriage. God also gives us some Valentines’ romantic help through the Apostle Peter. Peter gives the wife six verses in chapter 3 to help them become better wives. He gives wives good advice on how to help and even change their husbands for God’s glory. He illustrates the impor-

tance of working on the inner-woman and character and not just outer beauty. Peter tells wives they are in fact change-agents and they can help turn their husbands into godly men. The way they must do it is without talk. Interesting! The inner-character is so important and powerful, that they can change a husband for the better and do so without using words. That’s the power of character. While the wives get six verses of instruction, Peter gives the guys only one verse (probably because men cannot multi-task?).1 Peter 3:7 “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” Husbands only get one verse, but it is equally hard to do, vitally important to a marriage and just as re-

warding if done correctly. Husbands must stop at every crossroads, every decision, every choice, every action and ask themselves two fundamental questions. The first question is “what would Jesus do?” and the second question is “what would my wife think?” In order to be considerate to your wife you must know her. You must know how she feels, what makes her tick? You need to know how she would feel about your decisions and actions. Whatever you do, husbands, you must take note to how it would affect your wives. This is the respectful thing to do. What would Jesus do? What would my wife think? These are two easy questions that can help a man’s relationship with God and improve his relationship with his wife. Note also this truth about what the Holy Spirit penned through Peter. Note what happens if husbands don’t do this. If husbands are not respectfully considerate to their wives, God will not hear their prayers. God will turn a deaf ear to a husband who is not considerate to his wife. Why? The reason is not because God is mean and vindictive. Simply, marriage His way is that important to God. God is basically saying, if you will not help your wife, I will not help you. An inconsiderate husband is ignored by God. The point is this: if you want romance and bliss and endurance till death do you part, God has something to say about how to do marriage. If you believe Jesus can get you into Heaven that is great. Go further though: believe that Jesus can help you with life and relationships and troubles and problems. Believe than He can help you experience the best marriage He intended. Believe Jesus and fulfill your role as a husband or a wife.
