Different Views of the Rock ‘N Roll
Sue Berliner
I
Editor at Large Joan Westlake
stared apprehensively at the tiny ladder that was zip-tied to the metal scaffolding. As a disc jockey in a previous life, I hung my share of disco balls from the ceiling. I have walked theater and concert hall catwalks over the past decade as an audio describer for the visually impaired. But the ladder before me to a small platform at the finish line for the Rock ‘N Roll Kid’s Rock 1-miler made me nervous. I cautiously followed race announcer Ian Brooks up the flimsy ladder. I snaked through the thin cross bars to the platform. Mother Nature had better not call, I was here to stay. Worth the climb, the perch offered a great view of this Saturday prelude to the next day’s PF Chang’s Rock N’ Roll Arizona Marathon and Half Marathon. The kindergarteners through sixth graders stormed the parking lot surrounding Sun Devil Stadium. Parents gathered near the start and finish areas, cameras ready to shoot. Each grade took off in 15-minute increments on the 1-mile course. Some of the 3,300 children were completing the final mile of an accumulated 25.2-mile training journey offered by the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. With one in five Arizona children overweight or obese, the program is designed to help kids and their parents learn skills for a healthier lifestyle. Sunday, when I arrived at the marathon finish line, I cringed. To get to the scaffold’s platform, there was a two-legged ladder, attached to nothing. I made myself crawl up and joined my co-announcers for the day -- the voice of Ironman, Mike Reilly, and legendary John “The Penguin” Bingham. Mike called the exciting men’s finish, in which just half-asecond separated second place from the winner. Above the crowd of people, I noticed things I might have missed down in the throngs. I spotted Matt Hage, a friend who helped me through a thunderstorm in my first double crossing of the Canyon. Matt was again helping others as the pacer for a 3:15 marathon. He came in on the money, waited and greeted members of his pace group, giving everyone high fives. I felt like a fly on the wall observing many other special moments. I also spotted always festively dressed, Arizona running ambassador, David Bluestein. In a red wig, he traded his pace-leader jersey for two, 5-foot-long plastic pipes that he used to guide Steve Gokey, a running veteran of more than 24 marathons – including Bostonwho has been blind from birth. David, with 37 marathons under his shoes, said his sore legs would be nothing compared to what Steve was accomplishing. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of my favorite dance rival (SWEAT, Nov. 08), Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman, who was running the half. He rallied 220 runners and raised more than $250,000 for Tempe YESS, the Youth Education Social Services charities. He ran an amazing 2:01, including stopping to shake hands and smile for the cameras. As the final runners were winding their way to the finish, a group of about 40 Team in Training coaches gathered and danced while cheering in all the remaining finishers. As I struggled down the precarious ladder, I was reminded that whether facing challenges of training for a competition or what life throws your way, there is the promise of rewards beyond what we can imagine. A new view of you and others is waiting.

And you’ll save the $15- each admission fee if you book your visit from Feb. 14 through16. Make reservations for morning, afternoon or late afternoon time slots. When Paul Langworthy was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 27, he fought on his own. But, when his daughter Hannah was diagnosed with the same disease at the age of 11 months, everything changed. He became involved with the American Diabetes Association, first as a Diabetic Counselor at Camp AZDA, the ADA’s summer residence camp for children with diabetes, then on the Community Leadership Board and with the organization’s other local events. For Langworthy, who has a degree in Exercise Physiology, it was a natural for him to take an active role in the ADA’s fitness events. A four-time participant with Team Diabetes, the association’s marathon training program, he has completed eight marathons and also cycled in the ADA’s Tour de Cure with Hannah for several years. He has raised more than $ 30,000 participating in these events. You’ll see the Langworthy father-daughter duo at this year’s Tour de Cure, March 14. Osa]p Odknpo Deadly risks outweigh dubious benefits of hormones SWEAT has been publishing the deadly research evidence for decades that taking menopause hormone pills significantly increases the risks of cancer. Yet the dangerous drug that rarely delivers more than a placebo effect remains one of the most popular on the market. Here we go again… Reported at the December San Antonio Breast Cancer Instituted was a follow-up federal study of the Women’s Health Initiative that reveals that the risks of the use of combination (estrogen plus progestin) hormone therapy in healthy, postmenopausal women persist even a few years after stopping the drugs and clearly outweigh the benefits. Researchers report that about three years
after women stopped taking combination hormone therapy, many of the health effects of hormones such as increased risk of heart disease are diminished, but overall risks, including risks of stroke, blood clots and cancer, remain high. Breast cancer risks doubled. After being on combination hormone therapy for several years, the women’s risk of cardiovascular disease was significantly higher – from a 29 percent increase in heart attacks to a 41 percent increase in strokes and nearly twice the risk of serious blood clots – compared to the women who did not take hormones. The WHI is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

HEALTHY
HEART TIPS
1 2
Stop tobacco use – don’t smoke or chew or be around those who do.
3
Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish, and wholegrain breads, beans and rice.
4
Monitor your booze. A glass of wine or beer daily can be beneficial but too much alcohol can damage the heart muscle, increase blood pressure and make you act stupid.
5
Get active. The heart is a muscle so work it out with at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a day.
6
Manage your weight. Bottom line, excess body fat is dangerous.
7
Check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. High levels of cholesterol can lead to fatty deposits in your coronary arteries.
8
Lower stress levels. Stress contributes to strokes and other ills plus may spark food binging or other negative coping behaviors.
9
Know your family history. You should take extra precautions if you find out coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer or other physical problems are or have been experienced by close relatives.
10
Recognize the early signs of coronary heart disease. A first sign may be tightness or discomfort in the chest, neck, arm or stomach, which comes on when you exert yourself but goes away with rest. Women should beware of persistent indigestion.

Better Brain Buzz
There are moments your brain just shuts down while your body screams, “No more caffeine,” especially loaded with preservatives, sugar or fake stuff like Aspartame. We tried Brain Toniq, an organic, kosher, botanicalbased, non-caffeinated think drink. It tastes light and citrus refreshing. The results were fairly quick but mild. There was a sense of feeling good, motivated and back on task. The beverage is ideal for when that report or article is due. Brain Toniq contains many traditional energy and stamina ingredients such as Rhodiola root, Choline and DMAE (two natural compounds), Eleuthero root (also known as Siberian Ginseng) and wild-harvested Blue Green Algae. To a mix of natural citrus extracts, organic agave nectar is added for sweetness without spiking blood sugar. Nutrition info is 80 calories, no fat, no sodium, no protein, 20g of carbs and sugar. Find it for about $2.60 an 8.4-ounce can at Whole Foods, independent grocery stores and coffee shops. Save by the case at www.braintoniq.com.

Antarctica Marathon Musings
Its penguins, melting glaciers and dismal finish lines, oh my, in The Coolest Race on Earth: Mud, Madmen, Glaciers and Grannies at the Antarctica Marathon (Chicago Review Press/$22.95) by sportswriter and marathon runner John Hanc [pronounce Hance]. This is an entertaining sports memoir that follows Hanc’s 2005 attempt to complete the 26.2mile icy adventure. It traces the wild history of the Antarctica Marathon and delivers a lot of Hanc’s musings on what drives humans to run any race. There’s inspiration and whimsy in his descriptions of participants such as the wheelchairbound doctor or three law-breaking grandmothers. This is a good gift for runners or anyone who enjoys an unusual tale.

Train Together Remain Together
You see them at fun runs and marathons. You know – the happy couples that cycle and swim and play sports with their kids. Or, the dynamic duo that trains together for triathlons. In this age of tough times for lovers, SWEAT offers this Valentine’s Day romantic suggestion – perhaps perspiration might be part of the inspiration that binds couples together. We asked some of Arizona’s athletic pairs for the scoop on their pursuits of love and fitness. Audra and Steve Krell The Krells – Audra, 38 and Steve, 40 – have been together for 24 years. The Scottsdale couple has three boys – 15- , 12- and 10-yearsold. Audra, a freelancer, and Steve, a Chief Financial Officer, met in a candy store in Manitou Springs, Colo. Prime family activities are hiking, working out, playing golf and going to movies. The Krells say that golf became a major family fun pursuit when their middle son was 4-and-a-half and his Grandfather was teaching him the game. The grandson proved to be a natural. “Steve and I knew we needed to learn to

play golf before our boys passed us by,” she says. “We had so much fun learning the game together and discovering Arizona through its golf courses.” Audra points out that a few years ago, she and Steve made a pact that they were not going to live separate lives and began by scheduling workouts together. Daily they wake up early and head to the gym with Steve driving so Audra can eat her oatmeal. Side-by-side on elliptical trainers, they chat and catch up on family life. Before 8 a.m., they’ve exercised and spent quality time together. The Krell’s advice to couples is to follow in their footsteps and invest in quality time together every single day.

Janell and Tim Bolen After 15 years together, this Phoenix couple has twin 4-year-olds, Cole and Cloe. Janell, 38, is executive director for Chances for Children-Arizona and Tim, 42, is the owner of Excel & Beyond Coaching and general manager for Onsite Design. Janell says that the twins, “…have made us excited parents but we also realize the importance of depending on one another at all times, no matter the cost. They are two gifts that we promise to love until the end of our lives, as we will with each other.” They met in Lubbock, Texas at the Buffalo Springs Half Ironman. That active genesis continues as they enjoy mountain biking, hiking, running, competing in triathlons, playing with the kids and the occasional swim together. Members of the Landis Racing Team, Landis Tri Club, Excel & Beyond Racing, and Team Chances, Janell said since the birth of
Pamela and Jeff Baylor It’s not exactly the romantic bicycle-builtfor-two, but the Baylors of Scottsdale, in their mid-40s, find training for and riding Saturday mornings with the Bicycle Ranch Club puts a togetherness spin on their relationship of 17 years. Hiking and going to the gym together are also activities the IT systems engineer [Pamela] and professional services consultant [Jeff] share. Jeff says that their commitment to working out means they have more energy to play with their children -- Zack, 13 and Kyle, 11. He adds that being a positive fitness role model for your kids has rewards, pointing out that Zack goes to the gym with them, is interested in biking and even watches what he eats. Riding on the weekends with Bicycle Ranch, a bike shop that has been serving the community of Scottsdale for 15 years, also gives Pamela and Jeff a group of friends that shares a lifestyle and a goal to be healthy. Jeff offers this advice to couples, “Work and support each other as a team in all aspects. Make it fun.”
their twins, they alternate years for participating in big races, even though they value the experience. She says of the Newton’s 24 Hour Triathlon Relay, “We learned how each of us could dig deeper even at times when our bodies were ready to be done. We just looked at each other, threw out another challenge and we went for it. Sixteen hours into the race, we were still trying to out-split each other. Now that was fun! We also surrounded ourselves with the best friends for support, the Egans, and we had the world’s greatest relay partner, Kim Margel, on the team as well.” Even their work is fit oriented. Chances for Children-Arizona is a nonprofit that supports sports and physical education programs, as well as character education programs. One of the organization’s programs, First Step Fit Kids, challenges school children to run or walk 25 miles during each semester. They are given tools and incentives such as Nike running shoes, team shirts, clinics on nutrition and entry fees into a race.
Their advice to other couples is to “Give of your heart endlessly and unconditionally. Live with purpose, be present in the moment and find the positive in life. Surround yourself with others who believe and act as you do. Always remember to give to others, even when things are tough.”
Always make time for fun. Life is too short and working out and races are hobbies and lifestyles, not everything. Erin and Mike Scheidt
Erin Scheidt
This Scottsdale pair of 35-year-olds met on a blind date in January of 2006. Erin, banquet and catering director for Monti’s La Casa Vieja, said she and the Tempe firefighter dated briefly but it wasn’t until they were in a workout group the next year that love blossomed. The couple enjoys swimming, biking, running, snow skiing, snowboarding and competing in running and triathlon events together. Erin said the 2007 Ironman Coeur d’Alene helped bond them, “It was my first Ironman and Mike’s seventh. We had trained together the entire time, but still never expected to be anywhere close to each other while racing. As I was heading out of the town on my bike, I heard Mike say, ‘Hi sweetie!’ We rode the entire 112 miles of the course together, stopping, as our friends joke, for a picnic, at the half-way point. It was the most memorable and amazing race day for both of us.” She adds that the next amazing event for the couple is the baby they are expecting in August. Date night is usually working out as a couple, which brings them closer, says Erin. “We are able to share our personal achievements, as minor as having a fantastic speed work session to setting a new PR, knowing that our partner is truly excited and
February 09
understands the work it took to achieve it,” she explains. Even their social network is fitness-oriented. As officers of Haus Triathlon, they enjoy a tri-sport community of mutual friends. Erin says their formula for a strong relationship is “…communication, support, laughter and encouragement. Always make time for fun. Life is too short and working out and races are hobbies and lifestyles, not everything. It also helps to plan races at locations you want to visit, so there is time for both racing and the enjoyment after.”

Turn Loss into Triumph

isa Smith-Batchen won Death Valley’s Badwater ultra marathon twice, finished the Kona Ironman five times and was the first American to win the six-day, 151-mile Marathon des Sables across the Sahara Desert of Morocco. Great accomplishments, indeed. However, she says, “I’ve learned so much more from the things I wasn’t successful at than from winning a race or placing well. Those are the times when you really learn.” In the fall of ‘08, Batchen turned a glaring race loss into a success story. After raising half-a-million dollars for charity through publicizing her 810-mile endurance challenge, she failed to finish the competition. Instead of hanging her head, Batchen used the notoriety of her DNF to keep fundraising. An additional $30,000 – more than most individuals raise during any race - poured in after she dropped out. The renowned athlete says that the financial “win” for the charity meant more than any medal to her.
810 Challenge The original $500,000 goal was for her to bike and run 810 miles under competition conditions. The challenge included a 302-mile, point-to-point run from Las Vegas to Mount Whitney in California followed by the 508mile Furnace Creek cycling race in Death Valley. The money raised benefits the organization AIDS Orphans Rising. However, after weeks on the road, Batchen dropped out of the race with only 80 miles to go.
16 SWEAT magazine
Serious health issues, not a failure of spirit, stopped the athlete in her tracks. An abnormal heart rhythm made her face a dangerous reality. Batchen admits that when she withdrew at Furnace Creek, her eight-member crew was disappointed and confused. “When I walked away, I never, ever, for one minute regretted my decision,” she says. She asserts that whatever an athlete’s goal, dealing with the concept of quitting is important whether you are a novice or an elite veteran.
Right Choice “Even the best of the best who want to win the money or break the record can wake up on race morning and have the worst day of their life. It happens to everybody. It’s never anything to feel bad about. The process of deciding, ‘Why am I not going to finish this?’ is really making the right choice for you that day,” Batchen explains. Many factors can lead to a dread DNF from lack of preparation to race conditions to unforeseen obstacles. Batchen warns not to equate dropping out with failure, if the decision is made for the right reason. She says that is why she feels as she does about her decision to end the 810 challenge. With her asthma and heart rate out of control, she prayed for guidance as she tried repeatedly to get back on her bike. Then, a stranger pulled over from the road. He told Batchen he thought it looked as though she’d done the best she could.
February 09
“I kept thinking about my own kids, that they needed their mom to come home,” Batchen said. “This perfect stranger gave me permission, and said, ‘It’s OK.’” An endurance coach, Batchen says that she watches her own clients struggle and tries to let them know that, at times, it is acceptable to give themselves permission to quit. She points out that competitors need to experience failure in order to fully understand success. Dropping out can be motivation to train differently or be better prepared. Offering a dose of reality, she asserts, “It’s just a race. There is a race somewhere every day.”
Tucson Camp Dividing her time between Tucson and the Grand Tetons, Batchen recommends a balanced training regimen. She typically prescribes a mixture of jump roping, strength-building and run-walk cycles for endurance runners. She also sponsors interactive training camps. In March there is an all- women’s Dreamchasers camp in Tucson. The jampacked schedule includes running, hiking, swimming, yoga, cross training, core work and meditation. Batchen points out that the regime is flexible enough to accommodate first-timers who want to lose 10 pounds as well as ultra runners who want to put 100 miles under their competitive footwear. Health and personal issues are emphasized. An obstetrician-gynecologist is part of the camp staff. Open dialogue is encouraged including discussions about failure. Find our more at dreamchaserevents.com. “We can talk about absolutely anything, the sky’s the limit,” Batchen says. While coaching students toward their goals, she continues pursuing her own including possibly the very first “around America” competition. Whether it is coping with failure or just “life happens,” she offers this advice, “It’s a great thing to be comfortable with who you are and where you’re at. We can all get better [at doing that].” S

DAWN TO DUSK The awesome upper-70s temperatures and clear skies at the 2008 Dawn to Dusk endurance mountain bike race, Dec. 6, at McDowell Mountain Regional Park was in sharp contrast to the 2007 inaugural race that was notable for its rain and mud bogs. This year, 600 riders on 219 teams pedaled counter-clockwise laps through the 15.5-mile loop Pemberton Trail. The camp site at the Pemberton Trailhead was a hot spot well into the evening. The solo geared, Overall Men’s category seemed to draw the most attention with local studs Kimo Seymour [November 2007 SWEAT cover], Brian Bennett and Taylor Lindeen in and out of the exchange tent within five minutes of each other for the better part of the race. Taylor, who was gaining ground, suddenly dropped out and Seymour and Lindeem battled it out for the remainder of the day. RideClean and Bicycle Haus fielded riders who hammered the Duo category. In the four-man team division, Bicycle Haus was strong but Focus Cyclery prevailed.

Osa]p Odknpo Aflac Iron Girl Tempe 10Mile and 5K Run/Walk A favorite among Zonie women, the Aflac Iron Girl Tempe 10-Mile and 5k Run/Walk returned to Tempe on Dec. 6 for the fifth time. The females-only event drew approximately 1,900 participants to Tempe Beach Park, ranging in age from 5 to 81 and in fitness levels from beginner to elite. It was an ideal day with temperatures in the sunny 70s along a flat and fast course beside Tempe Town Lake. In the 10-mile event, Paige Higgins, 2008 USA 25k champion (1:30:49) left last year’s winner, Katie Ellis, 23, in the dust with a pace of 5:52.5 per mile. Higgins, 26, trains in Flagstaff with McMillan Elite. In October of 2008, she set a new personal record of 2:33:06 and finished eighth at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Vanessa Yelton, 26, Phoenix, edged out sister Phoenician Magaly Burciaga, 22, by a margin of 15 seconds in the 5k. Ann Fruciano, 81, Tempe, participated in her second Aflac Iron Girl Tempe Run/Walk with her daughter and granddaughter. Fruciano plays tennis and takes water aerobics classes. She finished the 5k with a time of 59:05, a minute behind her age group winner Dorothy Brunker, a regular at Arizona running events. Phoenix resident Lori Dobbin, 34, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a year ago but was proud to continue participating in the Aflac Iron Girl Tempe events. She finished the 10-Miler with a time of 2:15:03. More than 15 states were represented, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington. More than 100 Mother/Daughter

Teams participated. The Iron Girl Brand, with a mission of empowering women toward a healthy lifestyle, offered a competitive platform and amenities such as a post-race catered Breakfast Café, performance shirts sized just-for-women, personalized race bibs, custom finisher medals, post-race giveaways and more.
