publisher's note
One Step At A Time AS WE ENTER
October, here is a little food
for thought. Fall is a perfect time for a personal reset. However, before we act, I feel it’s important to reflect on our past. Two years ago I was forced to deal with one of the most profound challenges any business could ever
The Northshore’s Best
endure—the loss of Sophisticated Woman's founder Joanne Gallinghouse. Although I was heartbroken and facing a personal and professional loss, I chose to embrace the challenge and not look back. Fast forward two years later, we are again challenged with another life-altering situation. Just like most every other business, we have had to alter the way we do things—from client meetings and in-person events to photo shoots and even editorial interviews. But perseverance in the face of adversity is what we do best! But it's not only about change. It's about doing things more efficiently and effectively, and finding solutions and adaptions to obstacles. Our monthly publication continues to flourish and, in addition, we are also embracing a larger presence on social media. We want to promote our customers and local businesses in any and every way that we can, and to see our local community not only rebound—but flourish. I can honestly say that I’m over 2020 and believe I speak for most others. Once again, I choose to see challenging times as an opportunity and have set new goals with fresh intentions. My reminder to all of you is to love each other and to seek out possibilities within you that can make a difference. On behalf of the Sophisticated Woman Magazine team, I hope you enjoy this October issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you. And in the words of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, "Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time." Happy harvest!

Devan Szczepanski, MD Catherine Fussell, MD DS FAMILY MEDICINE THE FEELING ONE gets when arriving at DS Family Medicine is like coming home. From the outside, patients see an Acadian cottage—a nod to Dr. Devan Szczepanski’s Cajun heritage. Stepping inside reveals soothing muted green walls dotted with artworks. An aromatherapy diffuser sprays therapeutic essential oils as relaxing spa music wafts through the air. Her “granny’s” chandelier provides gentle lighting in her office. While most waiting rooms tend to make patients restless, Dr. Szczepanski’s unorthodox office provides a serene escape, fitting for this physician whose mission is to rediscover the "Art of Medicine" through personalized, comprehensive care. Dr. Szczepanski believes that the future of medicine will not necessarily be found only in a prescription bottle. Where science alone falls short, the art of medicine effortlessly fills in the gaps by providing true individualized “whole-person” care; ultimately placing the highest value on the patient-doctor relationship. This philosophy is truly what defines and sets apart her practice, DS Family Medicine. Today, Dr. Szczepanski’s staff numbers more than 20, whom she considers her second family. And now, she is excited to announce the addition of her new partner, Dr. Catherine Fussell. Together, they offer traditional services that include in-house ultrasounds and lab work, providing convenience with real-time diagnostics in order to efficiently and effectively care for each of their patients. When applicable, this is complemented with the DS Therapeutics division of the practice, offering the ultimate individualized regimens of vitamins and supplements that can be further customized for each patient based on nutritional genetic testing. Using her gene-based nutritional approach to healthcare, Dr. Szczepanski enjoys discovering what's going on with her patients “down to the cellular level.” This type of custom-tailored holistic medicine is the first of its kind, and

Fun Fall Foods Without Guilt WRITTEN BY LIZ TARABOUR, MS, RDN, CDE, LDN
OCTOBER IS A wonderfully festive month with fall weather, harvest festivals (if it’s not 2020 Covid year) and Halloween lurking around the corner. It’s hard not to be tempted by yummy treats, warm desserts and Halloween candy. Even if you don’t have kids, these treats always find their way on to someone’s desk at work, on the counter at the doctor’s office, or at get-togethers with friends and family. While we can’t always control what others put in front of us, we can make small changes at home—or in what we take to school, work or a party. There are always ways to make a recipe more figure-friendly. Here’s a recipe for Boo-berry Muffins with a nutrition facelift. Enjoy! Ingredients:
“Drizzle” ingredients:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup blueberries
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons sugar
1/3 cup raw cane sugar
1 teaspoon water
1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 2 eggs 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup blueberry jam 1/3 cup canola oil 3/4 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
Preparation: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease or line 12-cup muffin
tin with muffin papers. 2. Combine dry ingredients in large bowl. 3. In smaller bowl, whisk together eggs, yogurt,
blueberry jam and oil. 4. Mix wet and dry ingredients, stir until just
combined. Some dry flour will still be showing. 5. Fold in blueberries. 6. Divide batter evenly between muffin cups. 7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out
clean when inserted in the middle. Let cool. 8. Mash “drizzle” ingredients together in small bowl, heat
in microwave for one minute, stir. 9. Spoon “drizzle” on top.

THE YOU NIGHT CLASS OF ST. TAMMANY 2020
You Night: Empowering Women To Embrace Life Beyond Cancer WRITTEN BY LISA MCKENZIE PHOTOS BY TRACIE MORRIS SCHAEFER, STUDIO U
THERE ARE OVER 15 million cancer survivors in the United States. In growing numbers, women in our communities are struggling with the emotional and physical aftermath of cancer. This includes everything from depression, lack of concentration and low energy, to psychological issues such as fear of recurrence or lack of self esteem due to the harsh physical changes from surgeries. Most physicians simply do not have enough time during routine office visits to deal with the psychosocial care that women require. Established in 2013, You Night’s mission is to create alternatives to traditional support groups by providing year-round empowering experiences for women who desire a sisterhood of support. You Night teaches cancer survivors how to overcome the physical and psychological challenges of cancer treatment through teamwork, coaching, and skills training. We work with women year 'round with a focus on our signature "runway training program," where participants work for nine months together to eventually show off their skills and teamwork in front of friends, family members and health care providers. Throughout their experience in our programs, participants are taught many powerful skills that cultivate a positive attitude of support. By asking survivors to step outside their comfort zones and become "runway superstars," they discover an inner strength and inner beauty that many of them did not know they had. After the program is over, the ladies remain in the 14 Sophisticated Woman | October 2020
program as "alumnae" and continue in activities that support each other's ongoing needs while they use their newfound strength to pay it forward to new participants. To date, You Night has helped 250 survivors adapt to and embrace their life after cancer in St. Tammany and New Orleans. Women who are looking for support from our organization and from women who "get it" (even if they don't want to walk the runway!) are encouraged to write us at: teamyounight@gmail.com, join our SOAR Facebook page or visit: younightevents.com. You Night will hold a three-day, live-streaming event on November 6, 7 and 8. The "Purple Reign–Let Love Reign" themed event filming day was September 20 at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center with limited in-person tickets. VIP Patron passes to the three-day, live-stream broadcast and VIP Wrap Party, which will be held on November 14 at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center, are still available. À la carte event options and model sponsorships are also available at younightevents.com. The You Night Runway Empowerment program is funded by sponsor donations and gifts to the "We Lift You Up" Fund, a 501c3 non-profit fund established to help women embrace life beyond cancer. You Night Events, LLC can be reached at P.O. Box 2134, Mandeville, LA 70471. For more information, call 877-591-5936, follow us on Facebook or visit younightevents.com.

T hinking Beyond T he Bouquet
cover story
WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
A NATIVE NEW ORLEANIAN,
Samantha has been an avid artist her entire life. After studying painting,
drawing, printmaking and ceramics in college, she found her home in floristry. “I met my husband, Cyrus, at Southeastern and we both fell in love with this area and wanted to stay.” Samantha had the good fortune to be let go from her first job. She then fashioned her own future using a diverse art background to bring a unique perspective to floral design. “The owner of Especially For You Florist gave me a shot. Nine months later I bought the business, and I’ve been growing here for ten years.” But don’t let Samantha’s quaint location in “America’s Antique City” fool you about her abilities or her ambitions. When she’s not traveling around the country competing in—and winning—floral competitions, Samantha channels her fun and fearless demeanor into exceptionally beautiful designs for clients big and small from South Louisiana to surrounding states. Influenced by her love of architecture, Samantha says she’s built an industry reputation as an armaturist on the competitive circuit. Traditionally, an armature is a metal framework on which a sculpture is molded. In the floral world, the design possibilities are as endless as the imagination, and Samantha is known for the intriguing inner muse that inspires her. Her list of accolades is too long to recount, but along with being named The Northshore’s Best Florist multiple times, highlights include being named to Florist Review Magazine’s 2017 "Top 35 Under 35" in the United States and winning the coveted Jim Johnson Cup in 2018 and 2020. She was also selected to compete in the America's Cup in Washington DC where she impressively won 3rd runner up to represent the US in the World Cup. Samantha says that regional and national competitions she has won are akin to competing on Chopped. “They’re live, stage competitions. You’re given a bucket of flowers and a time limit. Sometimes there’s a theme and sometimes it’s freestyle.” Even as she openly explains the artistic process amongst colorful arrangements and towering, in-progress floral sculptures inhabiting her shop, there is an air of mystery as to how disparate elements are transformed into beautifully compelling pieces. Her magic has transformed a humble piece of driftwood into an elegant, beach-inspired centerpiece bursting with blooms; ping-pong balls have been charmed into giant pearls arranged in cascading circles surrounding yellow and white blossoms; and for her cover shoot, she has created an elaborate wedding ceremony piece that celebrates the Louisiana landscape. The seven-foot armature is constructed in two pieces with a backdrop of pampas grass and metallic-pink-dusted palmetto fronds adorned by pink Mondial and Candlelight roses, contrasting rust-colored chrysanthemums and dried eucalyptus. “This piece is inspired by the local landscape, but it has a fun and festive take on it. I put the base greenery on the frame before transporting it here to Carter Plantation but constructed the rest of it on-site in just about an hour.” Combining her award-winning artistry with the innate ability to tell a client’s story is the most fulfilling aspect of her business. She has manifested and elevated seeds of an idea into works that range from fiery to fairytale and everything in between. “I especially like working with brides. I treat every wedding as if it’s my own because mine didn’t go smoothly. My mission is that they are one thousand percent satisfied with minimal stress.” Samantha starts with the bride’s inspiration pictures. “Some are consistent, and others are all over the place,” she laughs. “I tell them not to overthink it and go with their first instinct. The most fun is when they give me free reign—even if it’s just for one aspect like the sign-in table. Then I can blow them away by pushing the boundary of their theme in some unexpected way. I want to expand people’s overall thought and expectation about what can be done with flowers.” Because she works in national circles, Samantha sees trends before they make their way to Louisiana. “Color is the key trend. There needs to be a contrasting pop of color in the bouquet that coordinates with the overall scheme. I know what’s in season and can get flowers from all around the world, so I try not to overwhelm them with the hundreds of flower choices. They can leave that up to me once we decide on the palette.” With the chosen hues in mind, Samantha sets to interpreting the bride’s vision as she has done hundreds of times before, creating fantastic arrangements that are like no other. Whether it’s the small detail of crafting the groom’s boutonniere to reflect his love of mallard ducks or orchestrating a fantastical flowerscape for a high-end wedding, Samantha’s muse has certainly inspired her to think ‘beyond the bouquet’ to elevate her floral work into works of art. Samantha Bates, AIFD is the owner of Especially For You Florist, located at 124 East Pine Street in Ponchatoula. tttttt As tradition would
The Things We Do For Love tttttt
have it, Fall is the time that Sophisticated Woman releases our Sophisticated Weddings bridal issue and holds our annual Bridal
Expo. But as 2020 would have it, all things have changed. But we like to think of it as a challenge and not a road block. Just like the rest of the world, our events have been canceled or postponed, and the way that we have had to do photo shoots, interviews and even client interactions has changed. Where there's a will, there's a way! Perseverance in the face of adversity is what we like to call it—and persevere we have. We could not let this season go by without observing our traditional bridal feature and paying a fashion tribute to one of the most cherished days in a woman's life. We would like to thank everyone who took part in our special photo shoot which took place at Carter Plantation in Springfield, where Event Director Lauren Sadler graciously gave us full access to the beautiful grounds and facilities. Our selection of exquisite bridal gowns was provided by Tricia's Bridal Boutique in Franklinton and Olivier Couture Bridal Boutique in Mandeville. The accompanying floral designs were created by our Enterprising Woman, Samantha Bates, owner of Especially For Your Florist in Ponchatoula. Wildflower Hair and Makeup owner Karen Carson and her artists, Allyssa Hutchinson and Bobbi Wamsley, beautifully styled our bridal models' hair and makeup. And all of the magic was captured by photographer Crystal LoGidiuce as we shuttled from location to location within the spectacular Carter Plantation grounds on a very sultry September day. In this special Sophisticated Weddings section, you will also find the featured wedding story of our 2019 Bridal Expo winner, Amber Whiteside, and her husband Eli Murphy. And, we’ve also included a story about how, despite adversity, some brides and wedding vendors are coping amidst ongoing restrictions and modifications. We hope you enjoy our bridal feature and gain renewed faith that somehow, love will always find a way! Amber & Eli
AMBER WHITESIDE AND ELI MURPHY met in 2013 when they were set up by friends to attend a school dance. Eli was 15 and attending Hannan High School and Amber was 16, attending St. Scholastica Academy. Amber received her Marketing degree from Southeastern, and Eli will graduate in December of 2020 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Eli proposed in February of 2019 during a stroll on the Mandeville Lakefront after a romantic dinner. He had secretly arranged for a photographer to be on site to capture the moment and had a surprise party waiting for them at the home of Amber’s mother, Karen Celestin. The date was set for August 29 and the wedding planning started immediately, recalls Amber, with Benedict’s Plantation the choice for both the ceremony and the reception. “I liked their layout because I wanted an outdoor ceremony and an inside reception. Everyone there was very nice to work with.” On the recommendation of a friend, Amber and Eli selected Paige Kirkland to capture the event in pictures with videography by Chuck Billiot. The couple also chose those with personal connections to help celebrate the day. Eli’s former baseball coach, Jeff Tircuit, with Mobile Beat Entertainment provided music along with lighting and a photobooth, and family friend Lucien Gunter presided as the officiant. After searching locally without luck, Amber said ‘Yes to the Dress’ at Azarue’s Bridal and Formal in Bossier City while celebrating Thanksgiving in Ruston with Eli’s family. The bridal outfit was a low-cut, shouldered ball gown accented in lace with a button-up back and extremely long train. 28 Sophisticated Woman | October 2020

For Every Special Occasion Hello, my name is Tricia Wood Thomas and I am the proud owner of Tricia’s
Bridal Boutique. I’ve always loved bridal and the pageant world. I was a pageant
girl growing up, and now I am honored to represent my state as Mrs. Louisiana 2020 for the Mrs. United States Pageant. It’s my mission to inspire women to be themselves and feel beautiful. Helping women find their perfect wedding gown, bridesmaid's or mother-of-the-bride dress is not just my business–it's my passion. When a bride comes through my doors, I want to make her feel like she is a princess and know that her big day is my top priority. We make appointments for our brides in order to get the best one-on-one experience with us. To help our brides feel even more special, we offer them complimentary mimosas and petit fours as part of their shopping experience. Our inventory includes a full selection of designer wedding dresses and bridal gowns that are exclusive to Tricia’s, and we also special order for our clients. For the icing on the cake, our full line of unique accessories lets each bride perfectly personalize her look. For the groom and his men, what’s exciting about today’s tuxedos are the varieties available to rent. If he wants the trendy shorter pants or slim fit, we have his tux. His style might be classic, a long-tail tuxedo, or dinner-jacket style. We can help him and his groomsmen find just what they want including vests, bow ties or cummerbunds and ties. We welcome the whole wedding party to the store to see all the options and to get sized for “The Look” that fits the big day. It’s important that the bride tribe feels confident and happy in their bridesmaids’ dresses too, and that the whole bridal party is coordinated for the perfect dream wedding. We encourage the whole bridal party to make an occasion out of visiting the store together to see all the beautiful options. We have a great selection for wedding guests also. Special occasions, proms, cocktail dresses or the go-to little black dress, we have it all. My expert team and I love helping our special ladies find the outfit that will WOW at the event. From the first step in our door until the event’s last twirl in that dream dress, I want my ladies to feel like the princesses they are! Love Will Find A Way WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST
WHILE COVID-19 saw the postponement or cancellation of many wedding plans amidst stay-at-home orders, social distancing and safepractices guidelines for hospitality venues, other hopeful couples and creative business owners had faith that love would find a way. When our feature story couple, Amber Whiteside and Eli Murphy, got engaged in February of 2019, they had no idea their plans for August 2020 would be in jeopardy just months before the big day. “By mid-March, I was very nervous watching all the updates on shutdowns,” Amber recalls, “but I was determined to get married on August 29—and we did.” The Whiteside/Murphy wedding went on almost as planned at Benedict’s Plantation with the only difference being a guest count of 150 rather than 200. “The venue had to follow state guidelines of half capacity which was 150. Luckily, the RSVPs showed that just enough people declined out of caution to meet that limit.” Carter Plantation Events Director Lauren Sadler also found ways to make wedding dreams come true at the sprawling golf course community and venue in Springfield that offers many alternatives to safely accommodate guests. “We have a lot to offer with multiple venues for ceremonies and receptions. Brides can customize their event with all our options. With distancing and capacity concerns, outdoor ceremonies are popular in our two courtyards and under the oaks of the Carter house. We also have indoor ceremonies in our atrium or ballroom. The atrium has an outdoor feel with walls of windows that can open, but it’s climate-controlled making it perfect for any weather. Our main ballroom has removable walls so if it’s a smaller wedding, they can close off part of it, or for those concerned about distancing, we can open it up to provide plenty of room.” Lauren also says that they address food service concerns by having masked and gloved servers rather than an open buffet. With one wedding a weekend at Carter Plantation the norm, Lauren says she experienced an unexpected change in booking numbers. She explains that, at first, wedding parties simply rescheduled their dates. “We only had one couple cancel, opting for a small gathering in their back yard – and we were happy to return their deposit. The postponed weddings began rescheduling in June, so now we’re busier than ever with those that were pushed back and ones already on the books.” With ample room to accommodate multiple events in a weekend, Lauren is also booking weddings with the shortest lead times she’s ever seen. “Even with guest capacity cut and a ban on live music, couples just want to get it done. When they ask for October or November, I no longer assume it’s for 2021—they mean now.” Throughout the uncertainty, Lauren has reassured clients that there’s not a single deposit they’ve kept due to cancellation, understanding that circumstances change 32 Sophisticated Woman | October 2020
bridal feature from week to week. “The deposit holds their date, but if there’s any interruption, it will be returned. That’s the scariest thing—the risk of losing that money, and we don’t want that to be the focus. We just want happy couples to enjoy beautiful and fun celebrations that focus on family, friends and an outpouring of love.” Not everyone is maintaining business-almost-asusual as it relates to the wedding industry during the pandemic, though. Samantha Bates of Especially For You Florist, which serves the Northshore, New Orleans and surrounding areas, says she had about 42 weddings affected during the months of shutdowns and restrictions, but that some brides found a silver lining. “For weddings that had to be canceled at the last minute, the girls donated their flowers to nursing homes. Those generous acts even caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens. Some postponed their entire event, others had a small ceremony and rescheduled their reception until next year, but only maybe two canceled everything outright. I’m looking forward to making those postponed events even more special than we originally planned.” Photographer Steve Randon says wedding inquiries have been almost non-existent during the pandemic with any existing bookings postponed until 2021. He too, though, has found an upside. “I think once COVID is under control there will be an avalanche of bridal business. Luckily, I didn’t have to photograph with restrictions requiring me to wear a mask—that wouldn’t have been nice. I was able to shoot some engagement sessions. One couple even wore masks for a few shots just for a future historical image.” While there are mixed reports of weddings happening as planned, the success rate for uninterrupted honeymoons seems much lower. With international travel all but nonexistent and air travel limited, grand nuptial getaways have given way to shorter, closer-to-home options. As for our feature couple, Amber and Eli, they settled for a quick trip to Ft. Lauderdale and Miami after having to cancel two other trips—first, a cruise to Mexico and then a stay at a Cancun resort. Grateful to have successfully had their wedding, they happily look forward to rescheduling their vacation to Cancun for their first anniversary. Sophisticated Woman | October 2020 33

Bringing The Future Into Focus WRITTEN BY MIKE COOPER, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT
AS PARISH PRESIDENT, one of my primary goals is to establish an open dialogue with citizens. It is crucial that every person who wishes to be heard is, and their concerns noted, to shape the future of St. Tammany in ways that work well for all of us. With this goal in mind, my administration has begun the process of updating the current St. Tammany Parish Comprehensive Development Plan adopted in 1999. This is one of my key initiatives. Through this multi-phased process, we hope to achieve resilient, sustainable guidelines for future growth in St. Tammany.

My goal is to hear the desires and concerns of citizens and business owners, and work to achieve a vision that will guide our growth. This plan will take a comprehensive, in-depth look at the way we are developing our community now, and how we—our citizens, builders, and Parish Government—ultimately want to see future development evolve. This is an opportunity for every citizen to have a stake in authorship of the plan and in our future. Several key elements will be addressed during the public input process, including: land use, transportation, housing, stormwater impact, flooding, impacts of development on natural resources, and the affordability and sustainability of future developments. The planned outcomes include: providing a factual basis for land-use

A Very Special Reunion WRITTEN BY SUSIE KAZNOWITZ, NHS DIRECTOR OF MARKETING
AFTER A YEAR at Northshore Humane Society, an 11-year-old pup named Jada was reunited with her family all from a video shared on Facebook! After the passing of one of her beloved owners, filled with overwhelming grief and lifestyle changes, Jada's mother surrendered her to a municipal shelter in Plaquemines Parish, a decision she deeply

regretted later. The family followed Jada's journey, but when the original shelter shut down for financial reasons, they thought Jada had been put down. Euthanasia is often the outcome for so many "pitbulltype" breeds in our state. What the family didn't know was that our no-kill rescue had saved Jada and five other pets to be placed into our adoption program. Eight months later, Jada was still searching for her forever home and so we turned to Facebook for help. In a video capturing her uneasiness at the shelter, our rescue pleaded for someone to adopt her. The video posted on September 1st was seen by over 30,000 followers and caught the eye of the extended family of Jada's original owners. Danielle Bondi of Venice, LA recalled seeing the video for the first time, "I couldn't believe it. Jada was alive! We were shocked when my mother-inlaw gave her up, and it's been heavy on our hearts ever since. My father-in-law died and that dog meant the world to him."
