I wasn’t surprised to see

“new clothes” at the top of my 14-year-old daughter Savanna’s wish list this past Christmas. But what she asked me a few days later floored me. “Will you and Mom watch me model my new outfits? I like to match my boots with my clothes, and I’ve got to make sure I’ve got the right ones with the right outfit.” My wife and I spent the next hour watching Savanna trot in and out of the room, sporting a variety of great new outfits—each with a different selection from the 30 pairs of BEARPAW boots in her closet. Being the CEO’s kid has its benefits. If you’ve been following BEARPAW Style, you’ll know Savanna is an awesome softball player. (She’s now a member of the Grapettes, one of California’s top girls’ fast-pitch softball leagues.) I’ve always thought of her as a tomboy. I’d never paid much attention to what she wore. But as I sat there, I was astonished to see a gorgeous young fashion plate emerging in place of the little girl I’d seen in sweats for so many years. “Wow,” I told her. “You’ve got style. You’re quite beautiful.”

“I really like trends, but I also like to be comfortable! You can be fashionable and cute and still be an athlete and true to who you are! The most important thing is to be comfortable in your own skin.” —Savanna Romeo

“Don’t act so surprised, Dad,” she quipped. Savanna had been back in school about a week when I asked her how the new wardrobe was working out. “Everybody’s copying my style,” she said, looking radiant. “The girls at school keep coming up to me and saying, ‘Oh, I love BEARPAW boots. And I love the way you wear them with your outfits. You look really cool.’” I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t beaming with pride in both my daughter and my brand at that moment. I was elated to hear that the girls in Savanna’s school deem BEARPAW “cool.” I was even more thrilled to see my daughter gaining the confidence to cultivate her own look—becoming an individual rather than a follower. Without even realizing it, Savanna was channeling one of the hottest new trends driving fashion today. As US Weekly magazine Style Director Sasha Charnin Morrison told BEARPAW Style when we interviewed her for this issue, “Personal style, street style, and Instagramming your own look is what’s moving everything forward. Fashion is about the admiration of real girls. Girls want to be their own style plates. They don’t want to be told what’s cool. They make it cool. They’re doing it themselves. We deliver news, but we don’t dictate it.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. At BEARPAW, we take our cues from you, our customers. We pride ourselves on creating relaxed, natural-comfort boots and shoes to fit not just your feet, but your interests and your lifestyle. Whether we’re making our famous sheepskin boots for fall and winter or our new espadrilles and flip-flops for spring and summer (you’ll see a lot of them in the following pages), we work hard to make sure the look, feel and fit are relevant to the way you live. In many ways, BEARPAW’s style has evolved in the same way Savanna’s has. We’ve absorbed current trends but developed our own unique flair and sensibility along the way. As the father of a 14-year-old (not to mention, a frequent chauffeur to softball games and host of team barbecues), I’m fortunate to have a window into the lives of teenage girls. I see Savanna’s friends doing the same thing she does when it comes to fashion—interpreting the latest looks to carve out their own sense of style. They wear their BEARPAWs with everything from skinny jeans to sundresses. They make the look theirs. They own it. So should you. I hope the fashions in this issue will inspire you to unlock your creativity. When you come up with a look you love, share it with us and your fellow BEARPAW fans by posting a “Mirror Modeling” shot with Instagram. Turn to page 5 to see a bunch of really cool examples and where to post yours.

WHAT'S HOT Beauty Beat : We asked Petra Guglielmetti, beauty blogger for Glamour magazine, to share her picks for the hottest beauty trends for the upcoming warm weather.

Hair:

UNBALANCING ACT: Taking a note from the music world’s half-shaved hair trend (P!nk, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna), trendsetters are faking the look by slicking it back or braiding half their hair into small cornrows a la Carmen Electra and Ke$ha. It’s all about asymmetry. SHE’S A RAINBOW: Bright, unnatural colors burst into the mainstream in 2012, and the trend hasn’t cooled off since. You might not want your whole head the color of cotton candy, but consider dressing up your tresses with a few bright multi-colored streaks. Hair chalk and temporary style-in/ wash-out dyes work well. Too timid? Go for colorful clip-in hair extensions instead. For a subtler approach to multi-hued hair, there’s the ombre look popular with celebs like Drew Barrymore and Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester. In stylist speak, ombre means high-contrast, gradated hair that usually involves two or three tones fading out from darkest at the roots to lightest at the ends.

Makeup: LASH OUT: There’s no such thing as too-dramatic lashes anymore. To help you make the most of the tarantula-sized trend, there are lots of new lash enhancers, from easy individual fake lashes to vibrating mascara wands to long-lasting eyelash extensions and the prescription treatment Latisse.

THE EYES HAVE IT: Pops of rich jewel-box colors on the eyes are replacing traditional muted pastels. Try sapphire, emerald or deep purple to line your eyes instead of browns and other basics.

PUCKER UP: You can thank Taylor Swift for the return of R-E-D lips, but Hollywood’s juiciest shade for spring seems to be sun-kissed orange when it comes to lipstick. If orange crush isn’t to your taste, why not experiment with a fresh, new in-between shade of red-orange or tomato?

Nails: ombre

NO FRILLS: Wave goodbye to lavish nail art. Fashionistas are once again gravitating to simple, solid nail color. In fact, classic nude polish dominated the spring runway shows. If you can’t bear to part from nail art, opt for simple designs like swipes of red against a nude backdrop.

GO TO GEL: Gel manis and pedis are becoming super popular. They cost a little more, but the color lasts two weeks or longer—without chipping. Don’t think of it as a splurge. Call it a low-maintenance way to look good when you lead a hectic life.

T THIS SPRING? Style Watch :

Sasha Charnin Morrison, author of Secrets of Stylists: An Insider’s Guide to Styling the Stars and fashion director for US Weekly magazine, gives BEARPAW Style readers the inside scoop on 20 fashion must-haves for this season.

1

Bermuda shorts in prints, solids and denim mixed with shirts and blazers.

10 11

Ruffles. They’re replacing the feathers that were popular in fall/winter.

Peekaboo cut-outs and slit skirts that expose skin but also cover it up.

2

Black-and-white in stripes, checks and checkerboard patterns.

3 4

Collage-like computer prints that don’t match for tops, dresses, coats, skirts…everything.

5

Gold A-line dresses.

12 13 15

Unexpected plays on proportions; for example, a small top mixed with large pants or shorts.

6

Electric colors like bright pink, green, red and blue—sometimes color-blocked and mixed together on bags and other accessories.

Exotic colored snakeskin bags.

Sporty tennis dresses.

16 17

Mixing clashing colors. Mixed metallics—gold with silver; silver with bronze; bronze, silver and gold together.

+

Floral prints in lightweight fabrics mixed with anything from a motorcycle jacket to boots to give them edge.

Pure white belts, sunglasses, earrings, and other accessories.

Big, bright plastic statement-making sunglasses.

Orange in everything. Think of it as the new neutral. Blue is also big, for bags, jewelry, statement necklaces and earrings.

7 8 9

14

Big eternity scarves in large prints mixed with neutral clothes.

20

18

Clear plastic cuff bracelets with jewels pasted on.

19

Beading everywhere—on dresses, tops and skirts. Don’t think sequins; think rich, beautiful, hand-beaded looks.

Personalizing your look. “That’s what’s moving everything forward,” says Sasha. “Rather than everyone gravitating to one specific look, girls really want to be their own style plates. They don’t want to be told what’s cool. They want to make it cool.” BEARPAWSHOES.COM 4

The Write Stuff

Your signature can tell people a whole lot more than your name. Below, leading handwriting analyst Bart Baggett reveals the clues hidden in six famous scrawls. Find out which celeb your John Hancock most closely resembles—and what it says about your personality.

đƫFluidly connected letters show a

natural tendency to connect words. She’s a born writer.

đƫƫThe straight downstroke on the “g” suggests deep determination and independent thinking.

đƫƫA wide letter “o” with no inner

loops signals blunt honesty. Ask her opinion, and she won’t mince words.

đƫƫDistinctive upward strokes pointing

to the top of the page are a mark of someone who likes to stand out from the crowd.

đƫƫA looped “t” stem signals that you’re sensitive to criticism, while tall “t” stems suggest pride and concern with public image. In graphology speak, R Patz’s bravado is bigger than his true self-esteem.

đƫƫA strong upward slant toward the right is a sure sign of optimism. The higher the slant, the more optimistic you are. Gaga clearly anticipates a bright future.

đƫƫThe quirky

đƫFigure eight shapes point to fluidity and coordination in thought, movement or both. Odds are, you’re a good conversationalist, a smooth talker, and—in LeBron’s case—a smooth mover.

Camryn: J US T She’s got what millions of girls around the world would call the ultimate dream job. And she’s only 13 years old.

Camryn says being the opening act for 1D does have its perks. Yeah, we can only imagine.

WA

MEET UP-AND-coming songstress Camryn Magness, the opening act for One Direction during the popular boy band’s sold-out, 63date European tour this year. And if that’s not enough to make half the female population pea-green with envy, she’s got chops: a golden voice, a knack for songwriting and personality to spare. Success hasn’t gone to Camryn’s head, though. She’s still down-to-earth, genuine and unassuming. “I’m terrified at the beginning of every single show, whether I’m performing in front of five people or 20,000. Walking out there feels like I’m walking to my death,” confesses Camryn, who follows the tradition of icons like P!nk and Beyoncé by using just her first name professionally. Fortunately, in a few seconds she forgets the crowd and loses herself in the music. “Once I’m up there, I gain my confidence,” Camryn says. “I try to find the people who are really excited. I feed off their energy, then try to get everyone else to stand up and enjoy it, too.” Despite her young age, Camryn is already a seasoned performer. This will be her second stint with 1D; she warmed up for the fab five during their Up All Night Tour in 2012. Before that, she toured with Greyson Chance and Cody Simpson. She still vividly remembers the day she found out about the 1D gig. “I was a big fan,” she says. “So getting a call saying I was going on tour with a band I was actually in love with was crazy. I told myself, ‘Okay, you’ve gotta be cool. Don’t be weird.’ It was a great experience. One Direction and their crew were very welcoming and sweet. Everything you see on camera in terms of them acting crazy and seeming like such good friends happens off camera, too. They really are good friends.”

WARMING UP! Camryn has loved singing for as long as she can remember. She took voice lessons briefly but gave up after her teacher kept forcing her to sing chestnuts like “When the Saints Go Marching In” instead of more modern songs that spoke to her. She gave her first performance at age 7, when she entered a talent show in her hometown of Denver, Colorado. “I sang Gwen Stefani’s ‘Hollaback Girl,’” she remembers with a laugh. “It was a really fun song, but I was petrified. I stood there like a stick the whole time.” By the time she was 8, she knew she wanted to be a professional singer. With her mother’s help, she cut a demo and mailed it to an acquaintance in the music business named Jeff Pringle, hoping he would at least offer some advice. His response? “No way. I’m not managing an 8-year-old.” But then he heard Camryn’s voice and he’s been her manager ever since. That same year, Camryn’s mother’s work in film led the family to relocate to L.A. Today the blue-eyed blonde looks like the quintessential California girl, though she doesn’t get as much time to soak up the SoCal sun as she would like. Touring has taken her from Manchester to Malaysia, and her jam-packed schedule regularly involves 15-hour days. She often gets up at 6 a.m. to prep for early-morning radio interviews and doesn’t call it quits until 9 p.m., even on non-concert nights, after three hours of private tutoring that begin when she finishes dinner. “When I tell people I’m homeschooled, they automatically think my mom teaches me, but I have an actual teacher who comes with me on tour. I’m always doing schoolwork. If I didn’t do this, I’d probably still be in sixth grade,” says Camryn, now a high school freshman. On the other hand, “It’s bad because I have to do my schoolwork in what would be my downtime. I don’t get to see my friends

much, so I try to keep in contact with them through Facebook, Skype, phone calls and texting.” [Note: Be sure to turn to p. 20 and check out our hysterical texting bloopers.] Gal pals and downtime aren’t the only sacrifices you make to become the No. 1 Most Added Independent Artist on Top 40 Radio and the No. 1 Independent Female Artist on the pop charts when you’ve just reached your teen years. Camryn is well aware that she’s missing out on parts of typical teenage life that other girls take for granted. “I’m going on tour with the cutest boys ever, but I don’t really get to hang out with boys my age. My band is great, but they’re like big brothers,” she says. So where does she get inspiration for songs like her new single “Now or Never,” which is at least in part about “forbidden love,” in her own words? “Luckily, I’m not alone,” says Camryn. She works with a number of songwriters, who help her craft both her lyrics and melodies. “I want my lyrics to have real feeling, but I’m still young. I base things on what I’ve seen in movies and TV or things that have happened with friends.” Her dream, she says, “is to make music that never fades away.” And the drive to make that dream come true outweighs the sacrifices. “People think artists have the easiest jobs in the world, but you actually work really hard,” she says. “There are times when I say, ‘This sucks.’ But then having people come up to me and say they liked my music makes it all worthwhile.”

The rising star dishes on stardom, stage fright and being the opening act for 1D. First song I ever bought on iTunes: Jessie McCartney’s “Beautiful Soul.” I was obsessed with it. Biggest musical influences: Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera and anybody with a huge vocal range and a big voice What I’m listening to now: Harder rock and metal, but also country, pop and rap. It’s a crazy mix. You’d look at my iPod and say, “Who is this person?” Who’s inspiring me now musically: Ed Sheeran. His lyrics are amazing. My musical style is: Pop rock at the moment, but as I grow older I want to make it a little bit of everything. My style is: A little preppy, a little edgy and sometimes very girly. Favorite clothes to wear on stage: A really cool pair of jeans, a cool top and cool sneakers. Best quality in a guy: A good sense of humor. Favorite store: Brandy Melville, but I love H&M and Forever 21 and Topshop, too. Favorite pastimes: Chilling with my friends, swimming and being outside, shopping or catching a movie. Favorite guilty pleasures: I’m a sugar fiend. I love anything with candy in it. French fries and milk shakes are definitely a soft spot for me, too— especially together. BEARPAWSHOES.COM 10
