Interactive Life Forms, LLC Wins Litigation against Chinese Manufacturer After a lengthy Litigation process in China against Chinese Manufacturer Lemei, the Chinese courts have ruled in favour of Interactive Life Forms, LLC, owner of the #1 selling male sex toy, Fleshlight. Despite facing an uphill battle, the court recognised that the counterfeits Lemei manufactured and were seized, constituted as unfair competition against Interactive Life Forms. The courts also indicated that Lemei's use of Interactive

German Retailer Beate Uhse Files Bankruptcy to Restructure Pioneering adult retailer Beate Uhse AG last week initiated bankruptcy proceedings with the aim of restructuring operations of the European chain that sells lingerie, adult DVDs and sex toys and novelties.
Beate Uhse’s application for insolvency, which is equivalent to Chapter 11 in the U.S., would allow for a plan of reorganization to keep the business running and pay creditors over time under jurisdiction of the court system. Revenue has been on a long slide for more than a decade for the Flensburg, Germany-based company, which grew to 300 stores with sales peaking at €285 million in 2005. In 2015, Beate Uhse counted 200 stores owned and franchised stores across seven countries in Europe. It generated sales of €129 million. But in recent years, Beate Uhse, whose shares trade on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, has felt pinched with lower sales. It has closed scores of stores and dropped its print catalog to
focus on online sales because of increased competition from the likes of Amazon and others. Friday’s bankruptcy petition was related to an announcement that it could no longer be able to service its debt — €30 million due for repayment in 2019 — and that there was no agreement with creditors to refinance it. Michael Specht, who took over as Beate Uhse’s CEO in April, said in a statement on Friday that the company was late to the game as an online retailer — and that has been hindrance to sales. “It’s been a big challenge to continue the company’s rich tradition in a modern, digital form,” he said. But Specht said that he’s hopeful for the 71-year-old company, which started as a mail-order business and blossomed into the world’s first sex shop, particularly after Germany relaxed its antipornography laws in the 1970s. www.beate-uhse.ag

With the Pop Up Pleasure Machine, showgoers were delighted to learn that they could “tweet for a treat”, posting a designated hashtag to their twitter account as well as a photo of the event, to receive a free product from the machine. The Pop Up Pleasure Machine’s hashtag, #VIBEWITHDOC, was trending throughout the two-day show with various photos of customers posing excitedly in front of the hot pink vending machine. In an industry of ever-evolving trends and products, Doc Johnson’s presence at ANME proved some things never change, “Pleasing our customers and consumers is our priority,” Watkins concluded. “That’s what Doc is focused on.”

I loved it when the three of us would sit in a van outside a restaurant and watch how the final date was going. (We’d secretly watch the contributors via a camera and analyse how it was going after we had worked with them, compared to how they started out).
You have counselled for over 20 years, what have been some of the more unusual requests? I was once asked by a nun to help her lose her virginity to a priest. Yes really! They had met, fallen in love and run off together and were trying to have sex but physically her body wasn’t allowing her to do it. In the end they both ended up very happy!
You have been working with Lovehoney UK for some time, how did this come about? The multi-talented Tracey Cox is an international sex, body language and relationships expert as well as a TV presenter. Tracey is now living back in the UK, having spent many years in Australia, she was the Associate Editor of Cosmopolitan Australia, and also had a weekly radio show on Sydney’s 2-Day FM.
What can you tell us about sex in Australia vs sex in England? I think the UK is a few leaps ahead in terms of acceptance of sexual diversity – same sex marriage has been legal for a while now and only just passed in Australia. Otherwise, the differences between what the average Aussie and the average Brit get up to in bed, I think are minimal. The perception that Brits are uptight and prudish about sex is outdated now. But both nations are having less sex than they were a decade

ago. The world is a far more complicated place than it was and stress has an adverse effect on our libido.
You’ve already published 16 books, do you have a favourite? Writing books was my absolute favourite thing to do in the world and I am sad that the internet means people don’t buy sex selfhelp books anymore. My favourite book is the first one I wrote: Hot Sex: How to do it. I love it because I put my heart and soul into that book and it went on to become a bestseller in most countries around the world. I sold millions and it was – and still is – often the first sex book countries buy when they first start to embrace Western values. It still sells well now and I wrote it in 1999!
You also have an illustrious TV career- any favourite moments? Lots of favourite moments! My absolute favourite TV show though was Would Like to Meet. A team of three of us helped long-term singles find love. I was the body language expert and ‘flirt queen’, Jeremy Milnes did communication and Jay Hunt did style makeovers. That was filmed 10 years ago and back in the days when you were allowed time with contributors. We’d spend six weeks with each person which was enough time to radically change their lives. So many people named babies after us or invited us to their weddings. The show made a huge difference and people loved it.
My collaboration with Lovehoney was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I’d been approached by other companies before but I wanted control over the range and I needed to trust who I was working with. Within ten minutes of meeting Rich and Neal, the owners of Lovehoney, I was ready to sign on the dotted line. I love working with them to develop products and work closely with Product Director Bonny Hall on all products in both the Supersex range and Edge, a range for men designed to improve their sexual performance. My main aim with my ranges has been to produce impressive looking products, in stylish packaging, that actually work and to provide full instructions and tips on how to use them. It’s the practical “how-to” information leaflets that I think set my ranges apart from others.

In reality, the perfect date night for my husband and I is a night on the sofa watching a foreign box set and drinking wine. We love Nordic Noir and anything French!

Direct sales? Amazon, Ebay, your thoughts? We sell direct to Adult shops globally and in Australia. Amazon sell a lot in Europe and the USA, and it will be interesting to see what happens in Australia. I am sure some of our retailers will use that channel to sell
Astroglide, but there are established online retailers here that are efficient and will compete well with Amazon. The issue is lube is heavy and shipping from overseas can be expensive. We sell direct, so our retailers can have better margins and keener price points.
What percentage of your product do you think is sold online vs brick and mortar stores? Online is around 15%, brick and mortar is 85%. It’s similar in the US and Europe.
What can you tell us about working with retailers? Retailers love our sample sachets, as it allows them to cross promote when they sell toys etc. Customers appreciate receiving them and when they try them they come back instore to purchase Astroglide. Retailers in Australia want a responsive supplier, who deliver a quality product quickly. Above all they want a product that will lead to repeat sales and get customers back in their stores. When customers knows that a particular store stocks
Astroglide, it makes them a destination shop. Some Store Managers have seen long term customers’ switch brands in recent years and the Astroglide sample sachet program is a driving force behind that.
What can you tell us about working with distributors? We don’t work with adult distributors, we sell direct. This ensures focus and better margins for our retailers. We do have distributors in specialised channels like pharmacy which has its own requirements including having to visit every pharmacy across Australia.

What brands/product categories are you now manufacturing and how did you select these? We only do personal lubricants and we only do Astroglide. All products are made at our specialized factory in Vista California, near San Diego.

What are some of your best selling items? Astroglide Natural 74ml, followed by Astroglide Liquid 148ml and Astroglide Gel 113gm. We have a Sensitive Skin Ultra Gentle Gel product that sells well in all channels as it and the natural product are glycerin and paraben free. We pride yourselves in truth in ingredients labelling and we have been rewarded with this with regulatory action takes against some other brands. We have seen strong growth in our Certified Organic Product that is 99% organic and 1% natural. 48
Our silicone gel and liquid are also strong sellers in the adult shops.
How has the global market in terms of distribution and retail evolved? There has been a trend for more specialised online retailers carrying Astroglide in recent years, but the volume in bricks and mortar stores has also risen, so the percentage split is the same. Consumers appreciate quality with personal lubricants, they want to try it and being able to try the product is a major purchase factor. Having Doctors and Specialists across Australia recommend it is a major factor and this is driving sales through all channels. Astroglide is recommended by the manufacturers of the Pap Smear kits as it does not destroy the sample collected. We are
the only consumer available lubricant to attain this approval. The other two are surgical / medical lubricants.
Are there any country specific trends globally or are some countries more receptive to certain product categories over others? Personal Lubricant is now seen as an essential stock item for all stores that sell condoms, so there are no barriers. We are a premium brand, with quality ingredients and rigorous quality control, there will always be cheap brands made in Asia, so it can take time for consumers to realise this, hence the importance of our sample sachets program.
We take great pride in every phase of manufacturing to ensure your safety and superior quality. Our products are manufactured and tested in compliance with ISO 13485International Quality System Standard for Medical Devices, Medical Device Quality System Regulations (QSR) and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).
What can you tell us about the manufacturing process? The process is that we batch up a particular product in huge clean enclosed vats, then run tests and when tests are all correct, we run long manufacturing runs of 80,000 to 100,000 units. This ensures efficiency. At the same time the products are batched we have labels, tubes and cartons made and their arrival to the factory is timed to meet the product run.
The products are shrink wrapped in inners of 3 or 6 and then into cases or 24, 36, 72 or 144 depending on the product, market and customer requirements. The sample sachets are in boxes of 1,000. Products are either road, rail, air or sea freighted to global markets.
What legal and compliance issues are there to deal with in regard to manufacturing? Astroglide is a Medical Device, in fact all personal lubricants are medical devices in Australia and must be listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Canberra. Products that are not listed
cannot be sold legally in Australia, under the Therapeutic Goods Act. So Astroglide needs to comply with the Act. The TGA regularly test medical devices for stability, bacteria and use by date and we were tested in the early years and as we passed all tests the test regime is usually every 5 – 10 years after that. Retailers should check online that personal lubricants they are selling are listed with the TGA at www. tga.gov.au/australian-registertherapeutic-goods. With regard to manufacturing as the product is made in the USA, we needs to follow the USA’s Food & Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines, which are also rigorous and recognised by the TGA.
Tell us about your staff resources, how many do you have now, and in what sectors? We have a team of five in Australia, plus more in Asia. The team members are young and know social media backwards!! So that helps. We have grown from being a sole trader in 2008 to the team we have today. Selling is personal contact, so we visit as many stores as practically possible. This gives us good insights. We regularly call all our retail customers.
Where do you see the company now and where would you like it to be in 5 years? Astroglide has been growing fast in Australia as we add channels and get brand recognition and loyalty. The adult shop market has room from growth for us, as stores seek premium products which customers repeat purchase. Retailers know that lubes and not all lubes, and quality, repeat visit and purchases are keys to them growing their own businesses. There has been a shift in ownership for a few brands, and some have moved to low cost economies to manufacturer, so the premium market should really open up for us in the next 5 years.
The quick test is to rub different brands of lube between your thumb and forefinger. The quality, slipperiness and longevity of Astroglide is all too apparent in the first 10 - 15 seconds. It is an eye opener when 49

When and how did you get into your current business? Started my career in sales at NCR / AT&T the IT industry, when it was punch cards and mag tapes! Sold retail systems for 14 years and then moved into Retail and Supply Chain software and ran Asia Pacific for several US companies. Received a call in early 2008 from an American living in Japan, who I has helped out with a job in the 90’s. He said that Astroglide were looking for a Distributor and did I know anyone. I liked what I saw and decided I could do it on the side, which was fine for a couple years, but it got too big and now its full time. So this is our 10th year and we have seen exponential growth and have now expanded it to Asia. It’s a premium product and we have a great following with loyal customers.
A typical day It’s a 7 day a week operation, shipping orders every day. So the day starts at 6.30am with a walk, and then packing orders for the AM pickup and continuing for the PM pickup. 50
