US Chain Peekay Stores Plan Asset Sale after Filing Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Peekay Boutiques, which operates a US retail chain of sexual wellness products under various store brands, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, reporting $72.6 million in debts. Under four banners — Lovers, Christals, ConRev and A Touch of Romance — the company operates the bulk of its 46 stores in Washington state and Oregon, but also has locations nationwide. It also has affiliated ZJ Gifts stores in Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma. In the Chapter 11 filing, Peekay listed about $1.1 million in trade debt to various well-known sex toy and novelty manufacturers that are creditors with unsecured claims. The sex toy maker with the largest claim is owed $293,000 for unpaid merchandise. Peekay’s Lovers division consists of 23 stores in Washington

and Oregon, along with nine A Touch of Romance stores located in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. ConRev has four stores in Los Angeles and Orange counties, as well as 10 Christal’s stores in Texas, Tennessee and Iowa. Peekay has a total of 338 employees, 136 of whom are full-time employees. The chain, founded in 1982 by Phyliss Heppenstall as a family business, was acquired in 2012 by private equity investors who borrowed heavily to acquire several regional retailers in hopes of building a national franchise. The Chapter 11 filing for bankruptcy protection capped years of unsuccessful restructuring and sale efforts, including an attempted initial public stock offering and tentative sale agreements.

Playboy Founder Hugh Hefner Dies at 91 Hugh Hefner, the founder and creator of Playboy, has died. He was 91. It is reported that Hefner passed away of natural causes at his mansion in California. Hefner was the founder of Playboy magazine and related enterprises who revolutionized publishing and helped move the sexual revolution of the post war generation. Hefner started his business in Chicago, where in 1953 he laid out the pages for the first issue of Playboy. The magazine had financial issues several years ago when it announced it would no longer publish images of fully nude women. Sales plummeted, and early this year Playboy started publishing nude photographs again.

Born Hugh Marston Hefner on April 9, 1926, in Chicago, he became the marketing tool for Playboy — complete with silk pyjamas and a smoking jacket, along with his trademark pipe. After a string of marriages, in 1989, at age 63, he married that year’s 26-year-old Playmate of the Year, Kimberly Conrad. They divorced in 2010. A number of years later, at 86, he married Playmate Crystal Harris. Hefner remained as editor in chief of the magazine until his death. His youngest son, Cooper, assumed the role of chief creative officer. Hefner is survived by Harris and four children — daughter Christie and son David from his first wife Mildred Williams and

sons Marston and Cooper from his second wife. According to the Los Angeles Times, Hefner will be laid to rest in a Westwood, California, crypt beside Marilyn Monroe.

But for those of us who aren’t trained in digital marketing or work with SEO every day, it can feel like there’s a lot to get your head around. Keywords, page rankings, broken links and meta data are all concepts you know will help ‘up your SEO’, but implementing these strategies when you’ve never done it before can be daunting. Take it from someone that’s had to self-teach to get a foot in this game!

SEO means making sure your website includes elements that make it easy for search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo to read your site. This is how they know to return your website and pages as a relevant link on the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). Get into good SEO habits and you’re more likely to reach that coveted SERPs number one spot. But getting there takes hard work, a bit of time and discipline. Increasing your SEO ranking can be a slow process. The search engine bots can take their sweet time to crawl and categorise your site correctly. Well, the poor darlings have got millions upon millions of sites and pages to crawl, with new ones being added daily. Thankfully, there are some SEO strategies that allow for quick wins and visible positive results from the off. Unfortunately, it does come back to getting your head around keywords, backlinks and meta data, but we’ll break each one down in an easy to understand way so you can kick them straight into action.

Focus #1 – Avoid duplicate content As a content and copywriter, this is one of the first bits of SEO advice I give my clients. For the search engines to take you seriously, you need to avoid copycat content. Search engines (especially Google) penalise websites that have pages with exact matching copy, because you appear as being a bit spammy.

How does duplicate content make it onto your site? Product descriptions tend to be the main offender — so ecommerce owners, take heed! The Quick Win: Don’t hastily upload new products with the description provided by the manufacturer. Spend a couple of minutes playing around with the wording. Add a simple sentence at the beginning, middle and end to make it more original.

#2 – Fix broken links and claim backlinks Linking is a big thing in SEO. Both onsite and offsite links can affect your domain authority (how well trusted/reliable the search engine’s think your website is). First, deal with onsite links. A bunch of 404 errors (broken links) devalues your site. Make sure that any pages, menus and blogs that include links go to the right place. Next, tackle your offsite links. These are links on other people’s websites that should link back to yours. You may also hear them called ‘backlinks’. Getting a good number of backlinks from other trusted websites (so not any old spam-tastic site) helps grow your domain authority. The Quick Win: Free web tools like brokenlinkcheck.com and deadlinkchecker.com make it easy to identify any pages where 404 errors turn up. You’ll then need to redirect the page to the correct place in order to fix the link. For offsite links, you may need to do a bit of Google hunting to find where your brand name’s appearing. Contact the site’s owner and simply ask them to link back to you. If these sites include broken links, that maybe go to old URLs you’ve changed, then provide them with the correct redirect.

#3 – Use your keywords Once you’ve identified the keywords you want a specific page to rank for — ‘sexy red lingerie’, or ‘silicone G-spot vibrators’ for example — make sure you’re putting those chosen keywords in the right places. The Quick Win: Whether it’s a blog or a product page, your keywords should appear in your title tags (H1 titles, and H2 if applicable), within the first two sentences of any copy and in the page URL (www.YourSiteName. com.au/KEYWORDS). description no longer has to include keywords, since Google changed this in 2009, but it doesn’t hurt to pop them in. A standout meta description with key phrases in gives your audience a more specific understanding of what’s beyond the link, so it can help improve click through rate.

#4 – Aim for quick load time People don’t like waiting for things and web pages with slow load times are considered to be stuck in the dark ages. Slow pages get less traffic, higher bounce rates and as a result it affects your SEO. The Quick Win: Use free tools like Google’s PageSpeed Insights or gtmetrix.com to see what load time your site’s running at. These tools are great at giving recommendations on how to speed your site up so it loads quicker.

#5 – Set your locale People tend to search for services and goods that are local to them, which is why it’s important to tell Google where in the world you are. Especially if you’re using a dotcom rather than a dotcom.au web address. The Quick Win: It’s free and quick to set up a Google Places listing, so that people in your area can find your business. Also, check listing websites and business directories to make sure your name, phone number and address are all correct and consistent, so the search engines – and ultimately your customers – can find you.

Their sex lives in your hands As a content writer for the erotic trade I’m often asked by people outside the industry, “what do you love most about it?”. My handon-heart answer: “being part of a community that helps people have better sex.” As both a writer and a shopper of adult goods I know first-hand that there’s tons of great e-tailers with informative blogs. And there are amazing bricks and mortar stores with well-informed sales assistants. By-and-large, the info the adult retail industry is putting out there is awesome. But where there’s good, there’s also some bad. I spend a lot of time reading content that adult retailers put out and visiting adult stores. Sadly, there are occasions when I feel more pain than pleasure when browsing blogs or listening to sales assistants. Example: the time I read a blog about gags. As part of the “kinky play” the blog suggested heightening anticipation by leaving your partner alone in the bedroom, restrained and gagged.

Hopefully you’ve spotted the issue here. If not, this philosophical thought may help: if there’s no one there to hear someone choking on a ball gag, because a kinky games gone wrong and their hands are tied up so they can’t remove it, are they really making a sound? OK, I know this is an extreme example, but it highlights the responsibility that sits with adult retailers when it comes to providing safe and accurate customer advice. UK company Lovehoney, totally get it. They put such weight behind offering the best customer service and advice around sex that they’ve recently teamed up with a local college to create an accredited Sexual Happiness qualification for their staff. It’s a clear demonstration of a company

taking their responsibility to their customers so seriously, that they’re encouraging employees to want to be trained up properly on the products they’re selling and discover how they can help people have better sex. They’re not the only company taking their responsibility seriously. As I said, there are heaps of adult retailers out there doing great things, but so often there’s more we could be doing. But, where can you go to get good information? Or who can you call on to be confident that your blog’s full of accurate advice that helps rather than hinders, your customers? You don’t have to set up a qualification to make sure you, your staff and your online store are well-versed. There’s help a-plenty to tap in to.

Staff training on products Many manufacturers offer staff training. They know their product(s) better than anyone and they want you to know their product and understand it so you’re in a better position to sell


it to the right person. They can tell you who it’s been designed for, how it should be used safely, and more. Reach out to them and invite them to do a staff training session. Brands like Fun Factory and LELO are particularly awesome as they have heaps of literature and sales information specifically for retailers.

Invite an expert in While knowing how products work is one thing, in our industry it also helps if there’s an understanding of why it might be used, and the situations it may be used in. This means being somewhat familiar with the lifestyles some of your customers like to lead. If asked, “Why should I use a leather paddle, rather than a riding crop and how might this affect my partner?” and you can’t give an accurate answer, rather than BS-ing a customer fill your knowledge gap by asking someone that knows! Why not invite a professional Dominatrix to talk to your staff about the products they so often sell to the BDSM scene? Or an openly trans-woman to discuss how they may use various toys or packer? For online store managers, ask these experts to write for you? Work out a content budget and ask if they’ll write you a blog.

Sex and how each of us engages with it can be so beautifully varied. If you can go some way to understanding the how and the why, then the advice and product suggestions you’re able to offer to customers will be so much more worthwhile.

Blogs, books and trusted sites Should you choose to do some self-learning, or want to write online content yourself and be the expert, then make sure the information you’re getting is accurate and reliable. Check out trusted manufacturer sites like LELO, or well-established blogs like ohjoysextoy.com, kinkly.com or carasutra.com. Offline, search between the pages of books written by sex experts and trained relationship therapists to broaden your knowledge.

Final thought… I’m really proud to be part of the adult industry. It’s changed a lot, even in the short decade I’ve been a part of it; both the types of businesses that are putting their stamp on it, but also because of what customers expect. Crap sex toys and crap sex advice doesn’t cut it anymore (thank goodness!). We’re in a privileged position to help people enjoy sex to the maximum! The responsibility that sits with us as a result is one we should be proud to have.

There’s also a plethora of sex toy bloggers. Read through some of their content and if you think they’ll be a good fit, get them to be your expert. Many of them take what they do very seriously and go to great lengths to ensure what they write is honest and accurate.

The idea of Sally's Toy came from our personal adventures. The story began in 2010. The then 24-year-old me met the 30-year-old he. Each of us had a previous relationship that lasted more than five years. But either of us had a satisfactory sex life during that time. This time we wanted to make it right. Only then we realized how ignorant we have been our whole life about sex. Born in a traditional local family, studied in local schools, I had almost zero sex knowledge. With that in mind, we only offer products with the best quality, best safety and the ones that really perform well.

We are proud that some NGOs (non-government organizations) consider us as an NGO that is doing really well (like being able to sustain itself financially). In a way we are a social responsible company and we hope we can continue to be a successful one. We engage in a lot of activities that we don’t profit from. Like giving workshops and lectures to students, creating videos and flyers about sex knowledges, working with NGOs on various projects. These are our ways of contributing to our society. So when people buy from us, they are actually helping us to educate our society with more positive sex knowledge. We believe that’s what a good business should be. Channeling the wealth of the fortunate ones to help build a better world.

What are a few of the key variables in order of importance to ensure the best chance of success in adult retail? Find a market segment that you can be No. 1. Refine the market segment until you can be the best in that segment.

What makes a great store? The shopping experience. Good shops sell good products. Great shops sell great services. Extraordinary shops sells exceptional experiences, so when they remember your shop, they remember not the products they bought but the great experiences that they had in your shop.

What variables define a great store location? For us, it’s conveniently located in downtown shopping district but discreet enough so a customer’s colleagues or friends have small chance to see him/her walk in.

When we decided we were going to do start a sex shop, we had zero experiences in running a retail business. But luckily Picco was a good programmer so we created our online shop without outside help. From there we explored our way into our own sex toy adventures.

What are your store trading hours/days and how many days or hours a week do you work in your business? Our stores open from 12:00 noon to 8:00pm. We basically work 24/7, even in the shower we discuss what our next marketing campaign will be like.

What do you love most about your adult retail business? We don't have sales people, we don't have customer service personnel. We are Intimate 35


Focus What proportion of your sales is repeat business vs new business? Half and half. Repeat customers are important to us but we also rely on tourists, which might be one-time customers. Sex toys are still new to many locals, so every day there are newbies buying their first sex toy from us.

How do your sales staff present themselves to a customer? We conduct regular internal trainings and workshops to our intimate stylists on product knowledges, sex knowledge as well as how they can serve their customers better. Listening is a major part of our job. If the customers are willing to share, we always love to listen to their stories first so we can find the best products for them. What do staff most love about their jobs at your business? Helping others to explore and improve their intimate lives. Also we encourage our staff to explore their possibilities on our business platform. Some staff love hosting art events; some staff love writing online articles; some staff love giving workshops. It’s our intention to help staff explore and excel expertise of their own other than being a good staff in a sex shop.

What size are your stores? Each of our stores are around 500sq feet. And it’s already huge compared to other sex stores in Hong Kong. The size is just right to engage in intimate conversation with customers. We make it cozy and display products in a way that encourages customers to explore. We are not a supermarket so the products are not lined up neatly waiting for customers to pick up and pay at cashier. We collect vintage furniture and decorations so it’s almost like an elegant adventure for customers to visit our stores. 36

How often would your business change a store layout or re-merchandise? As much as we can.

Does your business target a specific customer demographic? How would you define your customer base? Although we refer ourselves as female-friendly sex shop, anyone looking for quality intimate objects are our potential customers. Our customers are those who look for something more for their intimate life; those who are willing to pay a bit more for better products.

If we look at your adult retail business 5 years ago versus now, what changes did you see and how have you responded to them? 5 years ago I only needed my own two hands for brands that are good. New products came twice a year. Marketing meant a Google ad and a bit of Facebook; Customer service meant email and phone. Now I need my hands and feet and my partner’s too, to count brands with great toys. New products every week. Marketing means Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google Ad, Newsletter,


What trends has your business observed in adult pleasure products? It’s getting harder and harder to differentiate true European/ American brands verses mywhole-team-is-Chinese-but-Ihave-a-UK-registered-addressso-I-am-an-UK-brand brands.

How does your business keep informed about adult pleasure products? Besides reading every issue of Synergy magazine, we also listen to customers recommendations. Sometimes they know things that we don’t!

What have been some of the best selling items of all time for your business? Interviews on Online and traditional media. Customer service means email, phone, Whatsapp, WeChat, FB Message, IG DM, maybe SnapChat or Line next year. We cope by working twice as hard, and stay true to our core values.

On the other hand, the convenience of online shopping is unparalleled and the demand will only keep growly. I believe successful physical shops will have to focus more on giving a great shopping experience instead of being a convenient way to buy a product.

What advice could you give someone intending to start in adult retail today? Don’t try to copy someone. Be original. Find a gap in the market and fill it with your business. Make sure you have strong advantages in being the best in that gap.

What promotional activity do you engage in? Online/offline Other than the standard online ads, social media stuff, we make YouTube videos on sex knowledge in general besides product videos. We share our story and what we know about sex in colleagues, NGOs. We participate in various art events, film screening. We host workshops in our shops. We go on interviews on various online and offline newspaper, magazine, TV, radio stations. We even participated in a reality TV show, although it was not really related to our business. But as owners we grasp every chance we have to put our face out there and let people know about us. We always look for crossover 37

In terms of growth, where do you see yourselves now?

My wife and I founded Mr & Mrs Toy® in 2015 together with my lifelong friend Sanjay Lad and his wife Varsha. We created the company with the aim of designing 'the world's most powerful body wand' and, after extensive customer research, our dream became reality with the creation of the O-WAND®.

Alongside our online store, we have signed an exclusive deal with EroPartner for European distribution. We are now looking at retailers worldwide to promote the O-WAND® to both existing and potential customers.

We have always intended that the O-WAND® be a global product, hence the supplied international plug adaptor. The steady growth in social media and online information means that today’s consumer can be ever more discerning in their pleasure product choice, and we have developed the O-WAND® in direct response to this.

Initially we promoted the O-WAND® on Twitter and Facebook and were overwhelmed with the response from bloggers and sex toy reviewers. Reviews and testimonials are vital in marketing the O-WAND® in order to let our customer make an informed buying decision. As a result of this feedback we entered the RedDot Design Awards and were over the moon to win 2 Awards for the O-WAND® this year. We have also taken on board some of the comments from bloggers and made various changes, such as creating imagery demonstrating the recommended holding positions for maximum O-WAND® comfort and we are shortly introducing a storage bag as standard with all O-WANDs®. 43


Focus What are your thoughts on direct sales channels such as Amazon/Ebay? We are not opposed to Amazon or EBay and are aware that some of our retailers use these mediums. However, you can’t beat distributors or retailers who have a passion for and knowledge of both their products and customer base resulting in great customer service. These are the ones that succeed in the long term.

What percentage of your product do you think is sold online versus brick and mortar retail stores? The internet is great for adult retailing, however many bricks and mortar stores offer our customer a personal touch, so for us it is approximately 50/50.

How have your experience been to date working with retailers? We want to support retailers in every way that we can. During the O-WAND® developing stages, we contacted many UK retailers to discover first hand what was missing in the personal wand sector. A high quality rechargeable was clearly missing from the market. Now we have developed it. It is essential to listen to your retailers in order to work alongside them in promoting and selling to their customers.

How is your distribution strategy evolving? We have established a strong relationship with EroPartner who were very impressed with the quality and design of the product. We relate to the way in which they operate and they will be taking the O-WAND® to EroFame this year.

Are there any country specific trends globally or are some countries more receptive to certain product categories over others? Customers globally are much better informed now than ever before when it comes to sex toys and what works. We have found that many of our customers own more than one sex toy. Wands have grown in popularity across the board as they are seen as a ‘sure thing’ for reaching climax. If they want something they know is going to work, they reach for a wand. The O-WAND® is unquestionably the best on the market – our customers aren’t restricted by cables as it is rechargeable; they can be safe in the knowledge that it is made with the highest-grade body-safe silicone, and it is fully waterproof.

Are you able to tell us a little about your manufacturing processes? At inception, we sketch initial product designs alongside planned technical specifications. This is transformed into a CAD Drawing and modified to produce the desired result. A 3D model is then produced. At this stage we present it to sex toy reviewers to gain their opinions, usually resulting in further refinements. At this point we produce a working sample, then the process is run through again – review… refine etc. Only after the team is completely satisfied do we produce a small batch for regulatory quality testing and the product finally gets signed off to produce. If I said 18 months from start to finish I am probably underestimating!

What legal and compliance issues are there to deal with in regard to manufacturing? All our products are thoroughly tested and exceed European safety standards. When the product is finished it goes through a final quality check to ensure it meets our criteria before being boxed and sealed.


Where do you see the company now and where would you like it to be in 5 years? As a relative newcomer to the market, we are excited at how well the O-WAND® has been received. In the short term we would like to expand internationally, concentrating initially on the Southern Hemisphere. In five years’ time… we have other toys at the development stage so we are aiming to have brought these to market.

One of the most memorable moments was... A female customer came with her then boyfriend, looking for a toy for herself and maybe even a couples play toy. Her boy-friend wasn't interested at the toys or what could potentially pleasure her at all. He just played with his phone the whole time. When she asked for his opinions, (I couldn't hear what he said), he looked a bit bored. The female customer was a little disappointed but her mood improved when we started to chat about we should do, what's good and healthy for our body and our mind and we should own our pleasure. I helped her picked a toy and she left happily. She came back a couple of months later, gave me a hug and told me the conversation we had made her realise that it's perfectly OK for ladies to be sexual. Dame Products are the cool kids of the sex toy industry right now, and in the last issue, I got the pleasure of trying out their newest vibrator, Fin, which is designed to sit comfortably between the user's fingers. After this, I was eager to try out their first product, which was what originally launched them head-first into the word of sex toys. I am, of course, talking about the Eva. While it may just seem like another small hands-free clitoral vibe, the Eva first launched on crowdfunding website Indiegogo to a resounding success, with over 8,000 backers and raising almost a million dollars. Clearly Dame were on to something, and everyone wanted it.

I was intrigued to test the new Turbo Thrust. In contrast to other masturbator models with openings designed to visually resemble an oral, vaginal or anal orifice, the Turbo opening looks almost mechanical or from a science fiction movie. It features a 3-point structure aiming to mimic the action from lips, tongue and throat. You can see why I was intrigued.

The Eva is possibly the cutest sex toy ever. Its tiny body features a large button which looks kind of like an eye, and this combined with its arms work to make it look like an adorable character straight out of a Pixar film. It also doesn't look at all like a sex toy, which I think has greatly helped its appeal to a far wider audience than usual. In the same vein as the Fin, it has a sleek minimal design made with a buttery feeling body-safe silicone. Similar to the Fin, the Eva is USB rechargeable and features three different, steady speeds of vibration that can be accessed by clicking the button on top. I found the motor to be fairly weak and a little buzzy. Those that are new to sex toys will likely find this fine, but for power lovers or more experienced users you may feel let down in this regard. The unit is water resistant rather than fully waterproof, and while it claims to be 'whisper quiet', I found this one quite loud. The Eva is designed to be hands-free, and it does this by wrapping its little arms around the vulva lips in order to stimulate the clitoris without needing to be held in place. This can be a little tricky to set up but once in place it works a charm. It particularly works well during sex with others, as it allows you to concentrate fully on your partner rather than your sex toy. Overall, the Eva excels at being a hands-free vibrator that can stay in place during masturbation or sex. More experienced users may find it lacking in power, but ultimately it was designed for people who don't often use vibrators, and I am not surprised that it has done fantastically well in that regard. With now two successful toys under their belt I look forward to seeing Dame Product's next innovations.

The two separate openings at the beginning, simulating the lips and tongue are amazing and once you continue and enter the narrower, all encompassing, throat region, and then you go back and forth, almost completely out and then dive back in, well, yes it really is an amazing sensation. And comparing to the real thing, well for a start there is no complaining, no teeth to content with and you can go all the way! Despite the initial stickiness of the sleeve, the material can’t be faulted. Cleaning is achieved by removing and inverting the sleeve and then leaving to dry.
