<< FOCUS How did you first start in adult retail and what were you doing previously? I had spent 13 years with K-Mart rising from trainee manager to managing the Caboolture K-Mart. I was retrenched in 1992 in the last recession along with several thousand others at Coles Myer including 200 managers who left on the day that I did. At first I was anxious as there was a lot of competition for a limited number of management positions. Then I got three job offers in a couple of weeks and my confidence bounced back. I decided to go into business for myself. I paid out our house, bought a brand new Harley out of the crate, and opened our first BeDaring. The idea to open an adult shop came about when my wife Tracey and I tried to buy a vibrator for a friend’s 21st Birthday. We couldn’t find a store and that was an ‘aha moment’. I learned an enormous amount about retailing while working for K-Mart and while quite angry at the time for being retrenched, I am grateful for all that they taught me and the payout that I walked away with enabling me to start a business from which I have never looked back. What do you like most about your business? It is gratifying being able to offer people jobs and hopefully pass on a number of skills. It is also great to be able to offer staff promotions or opportunities. Of course I love it when a planned promotion is successful or a major task completed and everyone gets a buzz. How does a typical day look for you? I’m embarrassed to say most of my time is spent in the office. I know that I am out of touch with the stores and need to spend more time in them. I have a weekly and daily routine which starts with a review of sales entered into budgets and then I write a CEO message every day which appears on store POS. I check our social media and make comments. I review postal and email and half my day is gone ha ha. I now have a routine calling to one of the stores each week for a good look around. We prepare a newsletter every week to pass information to the team. I meet with my web team Monday, Accounts staff Wednesday. In between, I am trying to plan ahead and manage any problems. We hold a managers meeting once a month and there are always lots of other meetings to be held. I try to attend various Chamber of Commerce meetings and regularly attend seminars. I have recently been selected as a member of State Government retail crime committee. What have been some of the greatest influences in your life that have assisted you with your business’? While at K-Mart I worked at numerous stores and worked with some fantastic mentors. Each had their own strengths. Some in people management, others follow up, others in merchandising. I certainly walked away from K-Mart with a ‘can do’ attitude as nothing else was accepted. I would also have to include my Mum who has a very strong sense of empathy and I think I try to see

others points of view. There are a couple of people in the adult industry who influence me. My accountant has played devil’s advocate in a number of major decisions and I respect his opinion. My martial arts mentors bring out the warrior in me when mental toughness is called for and my wife can ground me when I get carried away ha ha! What lessons have you learnt? Many expensive lessons but I would say any time that I have lost a lot of money on a project it has been due to inadequate planning. I cannot over emphasise the necessity to plan every detail & researching as many of the variables as possible. Preparing a well-researched budget and sticking to it. One thing I find most difficult is having an exit plan that pulls you out at the right time. It is so tempting to keep pouring funds into something that you think will work and thinking that it will turn around soon if you keep trying hard enough. But success is more than working hard it is working hard on a good plan. If we look at your adult retail business 10 years ago versus now, what changes can you see and how have you responded to them? Adult products have without doubt become more mainstream appealing to a wider audience. We try to continually tailor and our range to suit. There has been a move from categories to brands and we have been a little slow to maximise this but are re-merchandising to brands now. Generally adult shops have become a lot more professional in their appearance with expensive shop fit outs and the size of stores is increasing. What are some of the best things BeDaring has done? We have a sensational team of loyal hard working staff. We have prepared comprehensive Policy and Procedure Manuals which standardises and improves training. Introduction of server based POS system and document systems were major steps forward. What are you especially proud of? My daughter Jayme is working her way up our business hierarchy and after spending two years in our admin office undertaking a cert 4 in Bookkeeping and Accounting she is now the store manager at Bribie Is. Jayme is my succession plan. My son is now also working in the business and I hope to see him climb the ladder as well. What have been some of the best moments? Worst moments? Best moment: Three generations working together with my son and my dad to build our Alderley store and then launching it as it was our flagship store at the time. Worst Moment: Pulling out of our Alderley store. We had used a lot

moving back to the mainstream. Our typical customer would be heterosexual partnered 35-55 so this is the demographic that we aim at. What type of activity does BeDaring engage in, in store, to ensure the maximum customer experience/ best chance of maximum sale? Clean well-presented well stocked stores. Good music and a pleasant fragrance. We also train our staff not to pounce on customers but to leave them to browse and offer advice and engagement before trying to sell. How important are sales staff/store staff? Critical. Sales staff can easily double store sales. What makes a great adult retail staff member? What sort of individual (prerequisites) are required for working in adult retail?

Personally, spend more time in the stores, spend more time reviewing big picture issues at the pointy end of the business and not get bogged in the day to day. What would you never do again? Settle on a lease because there is nothing better around. Wait, wait, wait until exactly what you want comes along. What are a few of the key variables in order of importance to ensure the best chance of success in adult retail? 1. Retail experience. It is really hard to change professions without a good grounding. 2. A good business plan including (1) Vision (2) Budget (3) Marketing Plan (4) Operation Plan - Policies and Procedures. 3. A good POS system to control inventory. 4. Wait for the right location. What makes a great store location? I believe that busy roads do not always the make the best location. We discovered this hard way at our Alderley store. This is traffic in transient. 90% of your customers come from a 10 kilometre radius around your store. You can’t count on lots of passing traffic who don’t live in the area. So you need to be able to count on your local demographic to support you. You need to be visible (to avoid lots of marketing to let people know where you are) but discrete so people who want to discreetly slip in can do so. Parking is critical. People will happily drive 20kms but not walk 100 metres. Again we learned this the hard way at our Alderley store which had limited parking. Does BeDaring target a demographic? How would customer base?

And people like to feel informed. I have an open door policy and any of the staff can refer issues directly to me. What do staff most love about their jobs? Helping people with their sex lives and making them happy. Working in a helpful friendly team where we (the owners) do our best to address any problems , be they equipment requests through to personal issues, so that everything runs smoothly. The Queensland adult pleasure market has cause to be optimistic and opportunities exist, but for sure all retailers are suffering from the GFC and general belt tightening in the community. You only need look at the discounts major retailers are offering to realise the pain is being felt across the retail spectre. In Queensland the current LNP government is taking a similar line to the Federal government blaming the previous Labor state government for the parlous state of the Qld economy. This talking up our economic problems at both levels creates additional anxiety and people are very cautious spending. Housing prices have been slower to rise in Queensland and this also effects how home owners view their financial position.

What have been some of the best selling items of all time? We-vibe, Lelo, G-Vibe, Fleshlight, we have a penis vibrator called Pathfinder which has been a huge seller. Several bullets and tinglers have also sold large quantities, Smartballs, and Bathmate. What proportion of your business is online versus brick and mortar? Unfortunately our online is only a small % however I am aware it could be as big as or bigger than bricks and mortar. We have thrown lots of money at online and had many extremely costly technical problems. How do you view the trend toward online shopping and the changing role of physical shops? How will this change your business? The move to online is undeniable. We are about to re-write our online business plan and undertake another expensive but necessary re-build of our site. How is BeDaring responding to the rise in ecommerce sales? We have a separate web business. It carries its own stock with all lines held in stock and dispatch staff ensure all orders are dispatched in full, same day. We send weekly e-newsletters and continually add product and features to our site. What are the online challenges?

Each state government has passed their own Social Tonics laws and Queensland’s are particularly broad and open to interpretation. This places any retailers selling social tonics in a legal minefield. What advice could you give someone intending to start in adult retail today? It is not the goldmine that people imagine to be. It is becoming increasingly competitive leading to lower gross margins as businesses reduce prices to compete. If this is your first business, think carefully about the stress that it will place upon you and your family. I know many people from non-retail backgrounds have successfully bridged the gap but retail requires many special skills and you if you do not have retail management experience get ready for lots of expensive mistakes unless you can afford to hire that experience.

Online is a difficult one to crack. It is highly labour intensive or that is our experience. It requires regular graphics work from an experienced artist, new lines to be added with associated , graphics and text prepared. New banners, frequent newsletters, and SEO are an ongoing task requiring resources such as blogging and use of social media. You can’t set and forget a website, there are always lots and lots of ongoing tasks.

It is a niche which by its nature sells products on the fringe of the law otherwise Coles and Woolworths would be selling our products (indeed Woolworths recently had a brief foray into vibrators) so make sure that you are aware of state and federal laws as violation can have serious repercussions. Test the waters before over committing and have a sound well researched business plan.

Making lubricant for sex is an art form that works with textures, and fluids to change the experience of friction to a tantalising, expression of delight, love, connection, excitement building to ecstasy. My friends tell me that their first meeting with their favourite lubricant changed their sex life forever. They had time now to explore intimacy. There was no worry of drying out. No rush to get off before something changed or skin wore out. Foreplay could now take ages, an open ended expanse of communication and pleasure. There was easy leisure with their love making to explore the body and all the sensations that went with sex. They could stop, talk, massage, wrestle and everything stayed moist and slippery waiting for the waves of passion to build, pass and return again. Others with different tastes say, “there used to be just the sticky lubricants and now I can get straight to it, have fun and be on with my day with little messy wash up”. A man in his 70’s when talking about being with his new girl friend said to me, “that Wet Stuff Gold of yours has me feeling like I’m 16 all over again! I’ve never had sex as good as I’m having now.”

Just as with the very best foods, wines or perfumes where the first taste or experience changes or develops through a journey with each sip or mouthful, so it can be with lubricants. At sales conferences some shop owners try to impress me with their knowledge of the lubricant market with comments like, “all water based lubricants are the same” or “all silicone based lubricants are the same”. I just laugh. I think all humans are the same. We all came from and spend some time dwelling in some way on sex. The details are so different when you get to find out what sex is for a person that the similarities end at that point. One of the very first pleasure products from antiquity, almond oil, has been revered for massage and sexual pleasure. It’s oily texture delights but stays the same as it slowly moves into the skin. With modern lubricants we have moved well past this simple range of textures. The vegetable oils have a small range of ingredients when you analyse the ingredients with modern laboratory machines. Just as with the oils, the first water based products gave a simple experience of just getting thicker a short time after beginning to use the product. Today, with the longer lasting lubricants in all varieties, the manufacturer’s pallet of ingredients is so much wider now, that changes in texture over time can be quite complex and we can choose what effect we want without love making and when that effect is to happen.

The attitude I hold that surprises people the most, from my experience, is that I have heard every lubricant on the market passionately praised by someone, “as the best lubricant they’ve ever tried”. I’m very happy about the very large range of lubricants on the market these days, so that whatever the preference is, whether it be for water based, silicone, synergy of both water and silicone or oil based, there is an adult shop that will have your near to perfect lube! Most consumers will adore or praise about a third of the market at most and show little interest in other ranges. I ask people to listen to their bodies as they try lubricants to see what suits them and what they do with sex. The main function lubricants have is protecting the tissues from wear and condoms from breaking from stress. There as so many variations on this basic function that many different kinds of pleasure effects are possible.

While all lubricants can work for sex with fully healthy people, the nature of each formulation and the wide range of properties make some patterns of love making much more suited to just a few products.


<< FEATURE This is so varied that all the products in the market have their fan base of devoted users that find it “the best”. The quickie now has many lubricants to choose from that work exceptionally well for the zipper-less experience. In water, silicone and synergy of water and silicone, there are products that last a short time as an excellent lubricant and then appear to vanish. What they have in common is lots of water for the water based products. Wet Stuff Ultra that is used in many Gay clubs leaves little trace after 10 or 15 minutes from use. For the silicone products the ideal quickie lube has lots of fast flash-off silicones with very little or none of the medium time dry-off silicones. I’m about to put a new silicone on the market called Wet Stuff Touch that will last for about 10 minutes and at 20 minutes little trace is left on the skin. It’s great for massage and something quick. The low level of other ingredients means there is no residue to be washed off. The lazy Sunday afternoon of sex and pleasures certainly have many formulations that will not only last the distance but change with the action or add tingles before becoming a protective glide surface. These days, there are both leave on and wash off products that do very well in this kind of slowed down love making. The longer lasting silicones and water based, do tend to need to be washed off. But even with the silicones, the medium drying time products like Wet Stuff Premium can last for longer periods and still vanish without need for wash off. Wet Stuff Secrets, the first water/ silicone synergy product I made in 1997, has had a revamp, boasting three kinds of textures before vanishing into the tissues as a moisturiser. It gives a light cream texture to begin, that firms to add sensations of friction, before switching into a wear protective glide surface at about 20 minutes. Wiping it off with a good lube removing wipe like Wet Stuff Swipes can see the next application of lube go through the changes all over again. Wet Stuff Ignight adds tingles that peak in about 5 minutes and wain in about 20 minutes of cooling and a warm flush that can give many interesting peaks to a quiet afternoon of pleasure.

The tender tissues needs are very wide indeed and take very good listening, to get a good match with a customer’s needs and what lubricants they will love to use the most. I start by asking what the doctor says about the skin condition if there is anything medical involved. There are many solutions to a skin condition that the medical profession have, that first get seen as if it’s caused by a lubricant.

The golden rule is that if a skin condition begins after using a lube and has not gone an hour after washing it off, see a doctor. Some women have challenges that are well met by the Wet Stuff with Aloe Vera lube. It has carbopol as the thickener, which holds moisture well, but does not change the natural viscosity that women have naturally. Wet Stuff Naturally also has its fans from the women who like the feel from their own innate lubricant and just need a little more water. The very varied nature of the health conditions have many of the wider commercial range being just right to un-usable for some people due to their condition. Adult shops these days have lots of supplies of free samples so that those issues can be dealt with, by just trying out many products. I did not commit to being a sex lube scientist when I was going through Uni. I started making oil based lubricants for pocket money when completing my final year of course work in Chemistry. Through the research years studying

natural product chemistry, then oil chemistry, the lube making grew to be larger than my research stipend and there was no stopping me. Gel Works was formed in 1982 and Wet Stuff was first made in 1986 to help in the lubrication of condoms. Most of my business contacts died in a few years after that from AIDS. I was in the last generation of young people to explore sex before HIV. Personal lubricants are made in factories that either cosmetics or pharmaceuticals can be made in. The tanks, purified water process, mixing machines, filling machines, testing and quality system, that documents each step, from design through production and into dispatch, are almost the same. A small upgrade to the quality system and certification can see a cosmetic manufacturer make personal lubricants (classed as a Medical Device) or simple pharmaceuticals. The raw materials used, need to be assessed in a formally documented risk analysis that fits the needs of Australia’s Medical Device legislation and regulations, particularly the state of the legislative art the Essential Principles for Medical Devices. It’s a list of 13 points of safety derived from the European CE marking process by the Global Harmonisation Task Force GHTF, now taken over by the International Medical Devices Regulatory Forum IMDRF. The regulatory process takes some months for a newcomer to read through and understand. 31

As a member of international scientific committees connected to personal lubricants, I get to talk with scientists and manufacturers from around the world about safety issues. The research effort is expanding currently with new papers being published every month or so that, “turn the lights on,” in areas of personal lubricant science. A new study by the US CDC with monkeys and rectal lubricant demonstrates no addition risk, with a high osmolality water based lube, as an example of a new finding that has made some waves. For an ingredient to be selected in a personal lubricant, a monograph needs to have been placed in one of the large pharmacopeia, by it’s manufacturer, and pass a series of tests in the product that are becoming more stringent each year. There are about 100 different compounds that can be found in lubricants so I can’t go into details except that almost all are found at similar levels in either foods, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals. The basic structure of a lube is common to all. There is a base like water, silicone or oil that is usually but not always texturally improved with a viscosity modifier. This is about

the pleasure properties of the lube, it’s drying time and the range of viscosities it goes through in use. The water based products, mostly, but not always have water retaining compounds to extend dry times. They also need a preservative and pH buffer system that many of the tests check before marketing the product. The tingling lubricants also have spicy ingredients that delight the healthy but some medically challenged folks may not be able to handle. Doctors can help decide if a medical condition puts limits on a person’s sex life or sex products. The warming lubricants are based on high levels of glycerine and propylene glycol, and heat, using the heat of dilution when body fluids dilute the lube at the start of use after a few minutes. The interesting thing about warming lubricants is that they are osmotic pumps that make their own moisture in contact with tissues that give water to the lube, greatly increasing the drying times of this type of water based lube. Depending on exactly which way the action goes, a warming lube will be thicker or thinner as the amount of exposed skin changes the water content. ‘Hide the sausage’,and the lube gets thinner, with more exposure of skin it becomes more viscous. As a chemist I have a hobby of testing the markets formulations. I’m very impressed by some of the new lubricants I see. I’ve been researching the silicone markets’ formulations this last year or two and I’m

impressed by the wide diversity that I’ve found. All of the theoretical extremes are found in the market currently. Thicker, thinner, quickie, fast glide surface formers, slow glide surface formers, silicones who’s viscosity stays the same for very long period, silicones that quickly get thicker then stay at that level, others that dry with no wash off, some need warm soapy water to remove. The chemistry of the silicones is simple and completely visible with gas chromatography as almost all of the silicone market use volatile silicones as the base. The range in the volatile silicones is very wide going from product to product. Like the colours in a rainbow. The silicone gum that gives the very low friction effect is a small part of the silicone products. There are very many possibilities with the silicone lubricants that are all determined by the mix of the very fast flash-off and slower less volatile silicones. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has the discretion to impose whatever level of control it wishes on Australian manufacturers and depending on the situation may audit a manufacturer without notice. The TGA keeps very close control over the testing labs that receive the samples of every batch made in Australia so if things go wrong they know about it quickly as part of the ordinary testing and audit process. It’s a very effective way to keep a close eye on an industry with very low cost to the consumer. Because of local lubricant manufacturing and the free market approach to regulation adopted by the TGA for lubricants, Australia with it’s decision to class personal lubricants as class 1 medical devices, Australia has lower lubricant prices with world class quality, than most OECD countries. Anyone who travels, can easily see the challenge other countries have, in getting well priced lubricants out to the bulk of the population. The TGA conducts regular independent testing of lubricant quality of it’s lube manufacturers, testing microbiology and preservative effectiveness, near the end of shelf life. Especially in third world countries, lubricants for the population at large are in very short supply with only the highly priced and limited types of formulations of the supermarket brands available. By comparison, the adult shops in Australia have a tremendous range of personal lubricants. It’s like a golden age where pleasures can flourish with so much more than what most people are aware of!

ME >> What I love about my job The people and the process! I really enjoy trade shows, customer visits, and opportunities I have to travel and see our customers. It’s a great way for me to get inspired with ideas for expanding our product lines to hear what our buyer’s customers are asking for as well as brainstorming with them on how to fine-tune our ideas. The design and product creation process is still very exciting for me still after 20 years to see final product and enjoy successes from our line as we launch them with key customers and at trade shows like ANME.

I had always enjoyed creating games for my friends to play growing up, so it was a passion of mine that has stayed with me from a very early age. I still remember the feeling of how excited I was to see my friends so entertained by a game of dares I had written at age 10. The prize was a tub of gummy bears and the party guests all wanted to win, so they were willing to lick the drapes, sizzle on the floor like bacon and do all sort of other crazy dares.

How did Kheper start? I tried first to have my first book published, A Partier’s Guide to 51 Drinking Games, after I finished writing it a few months later. Every path I followed led to a rejection letter and I finally decided if this book was going to get published, I was going to do it myself. I wish I had saved my rejection letters to write back after we sold our ½ millionth copy. I worked my full time job as a technical writer at Microsoft, AT & T Wireless, and Boeing for the next five years, all the while writing more games and publishing three more games books. Two of which I coauthored with a good friend, Allison Kent. In 1999, I got my “ big break” when Spencer Gifts tested two of our games books and rolled out A Partier’s Guide to 51 Drinking Games. Shortly after in 2000, I pulled in a handful of investors, including my brother Tony Pellham (who later became our Operations V.P.), and launched Kheper Games, Inc. I started launching romance games, drinking games, and other adult party games. Many were instant successes that still are best-sellers for us today. What the F*ck?, a drinking games of outrageous questions, Beer! a strategy drinking card game, Sex! a card game of sex positions, and Weed! A strategic game of growing pot plants have all sold so well that we’ve since then launched product lines to extend each brand.

A typical day I usually start the day with answering emails and calling customers. We have some customers in the U.K. and Netherlands that I work with directly and then often I try to reach U.S. customers on the East Coast before 9 a.m. P.S.T. Then I work my way west. Midday I’ ll work on product development and if I need to communicate with customers in Australia or vendors in China, I’ ll make those calls or emails at the end of each day.

My close relationships with both men and women. I love couples and learning how different friends of mine in relationships tackle their issues. Also to understand what helps people feel that they have a well-rounded social life as well. I have had some amazing conversations with other vendors and buyers in our industry that openly speak about their relationships and have become close friends. It leads to the inspirations and therapeutic values we build within our products.

I’m most proud of Today we are quickly approaching our 20 millionth game sold. Our products can be found in Spencer Gifts, Urban Outfitters, Francesca Collections, Go! Games Stores, and adult boutique stores internationally. We reach over 100 countries with our products, with our strongest distribution channels outside of the U.S. in Europe, Australia, India, Canada, Mexico and Latin America. Products of ours are in up to 12 languages with the most prevalent being English, German, Spanish and French. We offer our customers value and an abundance of creative ideas within the games we write, produce, and market. Our romance games are designed to help couples resolve issues in their relationships in fun and playful ways, and our party games are designed to keep people laughing and entertained.

One of the most memorable moments was The first large order I received from a 600 store chain in 1999. Knowing that I could soon leave my technical writing job to start my own company. I remember holding the paper PO and showing it off to friends of mine as our first product, A Partier’s Guide to 51 Drinking Games, had finally taken off after 5 years of hard work promoting it.

Last book I read The Good Guy from Dean Koontz. He’s the only writer I remain loyal to where I try to read all of his new releases. I enjoy the supernatural elements that he includes in each of his suspense novels as each one creates a unique reality and helps encourage creative thinking.

Favourite movie/TV show My favorite movie would have to be one I watched growing up over 20 times, Escape from NY. Favorite TV series is Modern Family although I did really enjoy watching all 6 seasons within a few weeks of Breaking Bad last year.

What would most people not know about me Socially I actually am quite shy. I have to push myself many times to socialize and part of why we do so well with party games is that it stems from my own issues I have in being more comfortable in large groups.

My favourite place In our trade show booths at a busy show. The energy of releasing new products is exciting and often feels like the reward for the hard work and 100s of hours I put into developing the content of our games each year.

If I could change one thing I would like to be more adventurous and wish I had been more so earlier on in my life. I was a late bloomer, so to speak, and wish I had known at the start of Kheper Games, Inc. what I know now about human sexuality.

Design wise, the Sakura looks wonderfully innocent and it’s purpose is not obvious. Slightly parted at the tip in a ‘V’, the Sakura completely envelopes the clitoris. Looking at it, there is certainly a resemblance of lips (or Mrs Pacman if we’re being cheeky) and that adds an extra eroticism to it, so it’s more than just a pretty looking sex toy. In total there are four vibration functions to enjoy: three constant buzzing speeds ranging from a soft to a powerful buzz and then one pulsation setting. All four functions are whisper quiet. Controlling the Sakura couldn’t be simpler, something I always look for in a quality, designer vibrator. There are only two buttons on the base of the vibe: a ‘+’ and a ‘-’ button. When the Sakura arrives it is housed in a weighty display case, which also doubles as the charging dock. On the base of the black charging base are two magnetic prongs that are the same shape as the buttons on the vibe. Align the buttons with the prongs on the base, you’ll feel the magnets attract. A small USB port is on one side of the charging dock. A USB cable and USB plug attachment are included and in a separate box to the toy.. Having the choice of how to charge is excellent and being someone that is always around a laptop or computer, it’s a very convenient way to keep my Sakura topped up with power. During charging a small light on the base will come one and when full this light will turn off, meaning it’s play time! Completely waterproof, cleaning is simple. With the Sakura just make sure you wash thoroughly between the gap in the tip. As the material is nonporous and completely smooth and sealed, this is easy and shouldn’t take long at all. When not in use keep your iroha product in the case with the lid on to prevent dust or dirt getting to it. Turn on and it with start an initial thrust. Press the minus button and it will take you on a pleasure road of three algorithmic modes. Starting at a moderate speed and then slowing down to a deep, slow, thrust, of, pleasure. Depending on how you like your love making, this was easily our favourite setting. From short vibrations to deep pulsations, escalating thrusts and the final mode which feels like random setting and mixes it all up, it means you really can vary the sensations at the touch of a button. Well any sex session, whether with a person or a toy, is always a lot more interesting when you get to mix it up. The difference is, the Stronic Eins keeps the fast pace you want, for longer, without getting tired or achy legs. Just something to bear in mind. We-Vibe 4 Eva Sless I really like We-Vibes. I have tried, tested and reviewed quite a few of their products and have always enjoyed them, especially their couples toys. I will admit that some of the earlier versions had some issues with certain usability factors but they were still fun and enjoyable and, as each update came along, those issues were sorted out to make it better and better. The We-Vibe 4 is different to the others in a few ways. The first being the material it is made out of. Gone is the slick, shiny silicone which, especially when all lubed up, had a tendency to move about a bit and lose it’s hold. It’s been replaced with a more matte silicone that is smooth and velvety to the touch and doesn’t get anywhere near as slippery. They have also changed the size and shape a bit. The toy itself is smaller and the insertable end isn’t as bulbous as the previous ones, but still manages to hit the spot like the We-Vibe III did. The vibrations also seem to have improved with more intensity to the buzzes and, although there are a few differences to the pulse patterns, all six of the settings are good and suitable for everyone’s different preferences of strength and vibration. The remote is a bit different too. On the III there was just one button to push through the modes, the We-Vibe 4 has four easy to use buttons that can increase the intensity (up for more, down for less and to turn off) and change back and forth (side to side) through the settings so you don’t always have to go right through the whole sequence to get back to the one you like best. To use it all you have to do to turn it on is push down the little button on the front end of the toy for about two seconds and then either push through that to get to the sequence and intensity you like, or use the remote. Just hold the remote next to the toy and press the top button down for a few seconds and it syncs up. If you need to, use a bit of lube (always use a water-based lubricant with toys as some silicone ones can damage the material) to insert the smaller end and then the larger end rests nicely against your clitoris. It can be a great toy to use solo, but as a couples toy, it really comes into its own when your partner slides in next to it. The G-Spot is stimulated, the clitoris is stimulated and the penis is as well. The remote control (which comes with a lithium coin cell battery) has a range of around three metres and, because the toy has a really quiet motor. It’s fully waterproof (not the remote though), and charges via usb. All in all this new version of the We-Vibe is a real winner. I give this new version a 9/10 and think it is definitely an upgrade We-Vibe lovers will enjoy.
