Retailers have informed us that sales have been rather quiet these past few months, so here’s a recap of the recent industry trade shows and some lovely feature editorials. Californian based ‘XR (Xtreme Restraints) Brands’ have been going from strength to strength with a heavy initial focus on BDSM items and have in more recent times, expanded to include almost every category of adult product. Synergy recently interviewed President Rebecca Weinberg on the current and future plans and also covered Director of International Marketing and Business Development Michael Guilfoyle. Andy Green, President of Pennsylvania based adult distributor and vendor XGEN Products is also the manufacturer behind quality lingerie brands such as Lapdance, Baci, Envy, Teacher’s Pet and adult toy brands Bodywand, Ovo, ZOLO, the Rabbit Company and more. The Rostock-based insurtech hepster has developed the first sex toy insurance in the world. This means that customers purchasing a Womanizer now have the option to also buy comprehensive and carefree insurance for only 20 euros per year. The policy works like the nowwidespread cell phone insurance. The sex toy insurance comes in handy for cases of damage, destruction and theft. For example, this includes improper handling and operating errors like the use of the wrong lubricant, which is protected against, just like falls and breakage. Germany is acting as the test market. If success follows, then a global launch will be the second step. The concept “The idea for sex toy insurance came to us when
one of our colleagues told us about the unfortunate end to her surfing vacation. On the last evening of her trip, she and her friends were celebrating with another group of girls in her hotel room. Once everybody had left, she realized someone had stolen her Womanizer. At first this made us all laugh, but after looking closer, we saw an obvious problem had been revealed. Even when the Womanizer is covered by the warranty against damages, a protection against unforeseen issues like theft is missing. The loss of an item can hurt a lot, especially with sex toys, which often sit in a mid to high price range. US Adam & Eve Acquires Australian Retailer Excite The American retailer Adam & Eve has announced the acquisition of the Australian adult company Excite Group PTY. The Australians operate several adult brands and online retailers particularly under the brand name Wild Secrets, including Fantasy Lingerie, Linspree and FGMO.

Security Tames Crowds at ANME “Bucked” Booth by United Consortium United Consortium galloped into the Adult Novelty Manufacturers Expo (ANME) this January with their new “Bucked” brand, and pandemonium ensued. “The booth was so crowded at one point that security had to come and disperse the crowd because of the fire hazard it was causing,” says David Greer, Brand Sponsor for United Consortium’s Bucked brand. “It was the equestrian-themed models that put us over the top, but the products are pretty fabulous too.” Bucked was featured in the main show room to an overwhelmingly positive reception as the models posed for photo ops and handed out Bucked-branded whips for people to continue the fun at home. It was easily the most popular booth at the show, with deserved buzz around the exciting new products. The Bucked line is developed by gay men for gay men, with products like “Smokey Wrangler,” a luxurious leather-scented masturbation cream, and “Phantom,” a slick and stringy white lubricant that looks and feels almost exactly like semen, billed as “realistic cum play.” The sumptuous packaging puts people right in the saddle for an exhilarating ride, bringing to mind intoxicatingly masculine imagery and colors. Satisfyer report that several meetings to find agreement between the two companies in the last few weeks with the focus on a cross license patent which would allow each company to use each other’s license freely, has failed. “In the end, the main point of issue was in regards to the 5 years or longer term”, says Jasmin Wagner, press spokeswoman of Satisfyer. “The confidence got lost particularly on the last step on the way of a cross-license on the weekend”. www.satisfyer.com

Sexual robotics technology has taken another leap forward with Cloud Climax’s announcement that it is now offering Emma the Sex Robot with artificial-intelligence functions. Emma, which costs about US$3,900, is an alternative partner that is here to provide companionship for all, Cloud Climax officials said. It has the ability to recognize voices and winks at companions with animated eyes that can move and blink. Emma’s head tilts and rotates and her animated mouth lip syncs while speaking, smiling and delivering different facial expressions to provide barrier-free communication in both Chinese and English — answering questions and conversing as she learns. Emma’s body features integrated touch sensors, offering different responses according to different stimulations. It

Chi Chi LaRue’s to Open Second LA Store Award winning retailer Chi Chi LaRue’s is proud to announce the opening of a 2nd store on the east side of West Hollywood. Chi Chi LaRue’s Circus will open at 8230 Santa Monica Boulevard in the historic and legendary Circus of Books location. For decades the world famous Circus of Books has been a source of nostalgia for many gay men who entered through the saloon doors in search of porn, cruising, sex toys, lube, poppers, books and magazines. The store originally opened as Book Circus in 1960. How and When XR LLC started 20 years ago in 1999. It was born from the founder’s true passion for fetish. XR LLC identified a need for highquality, innovative fetish products at affordable pricing. We really got our stride about 10 years ago with the launch of our first full line, Master Series. Since then we have grown to over 30 brands in our lineup. Most reputable; Master Series, Frisky, Tom of Finland, Tailz and Cleanstream. It’s been a burst of growth ever since.
Our Premises We own a 40,000 sq. ft. building in beautiful Huntington Beach, California and a 2nd 10,000 sq. foot warehouse for over flow storage. Our building consists of office and warehouse space housing over 4,000 products. We not only stock our own brands, but we stock thousands of items in bulk packaging to cater to private label customers.
How and to what countries are you selling to? We currently sell to distributors all over the world; countless countries within Europe, Australia, Africa, Latin America, China, Korea, Japan, Canada and the United States.
In terms of growth, where do you see yourselves now? Although we have seen huge growth over the last few years, we feel strongly that we are just getting started. There is so much room for growth for XR.
How are the markets developing globally for you? Since opening relationships with key Distributors in international countries we have worked hand in hand with them to introduce XR Brands products to retailers and end users. Our distributors are an extension of the XR team and help to grow their business and ours on a daily basis.
How do you promote and create awareness? Promoting our brands is a top priority for the XR team. Each of our sales reps has a constant focus on promoting our brand within their customer base and territory. We exhibit at many trade shows per year all over the world. Our Marketing teams focus is connecting tour customers via social media, e-blasts and industry magazines.
Retail Cooperations I really enjoy working with retailers. Understanding what the store needs and what their customers need directly from someone that is on the frontline is super valuable information for us manufacturers. It helps us design everything from point of purchase displays to item reorder tags, signage and sale/ spiff programs.
Distribution Agreements Distributors are an extension of us manufacturers and are truly our boots on the ground when we can’t be there ourselves. They have a tireless job with many days on the road working with the majority of the retailers on our behalf. We support distributors wherever we can, from training materials, signage, testers, regional trainings, to cooperated road trips to trade shows.
Our Best-Selling Items Our Booty Sparks line has taken off like crazy! The Aluminum Alloy plugs available in 3 sizes each are adorned with ceramic roses, hearts and gem accents. They are priced to sell and have been a huge hit for us. We have other stand out items such as our Frisky Ass-Spinner butt plug. Imagine a fidget spinner for your rear. Focus Distribution and Retail – An Evolving Landscape This industry is ever changing and with e-commerce being a new outlet for private purchasing our industry’s growth has been absolutely insane. Not to mention worldwide brand awareness has improved so much. We receive emails from all over the world looking purchase our products.
Country Specific Trends A countries disposable income is relative to the types of items they typically purchase. For instance, South Africa and Latin America prefer to purchase more low priced items, items that the majority of their customers would be able to afford. Australia, I feel is just getting warmed up to the idea of BDSM. We have seen much more acceptance there for harder core items as of late.
What brands/product categories are you now manufacturing? Our latest items we are making are a line called Thump It. They consist of Silicone butt plugs

that use kinetic energy to move an inner ball up and down inside the plug. This creates kind of like a firm thumping feel to the toy. If you have it inserted, it would feel similar to a thrusting action in you. They were a huge hit for us at the latest tradeshows and we are already in the works of expanding the line.
Manufacturing Our Director of Product development works hands on from the initial idea to the finished product. Our customers’ feedback is very important to us. We strive to create innovative products to satisfy our customer’s needs. Typically we begin with an idea and we brainstorm and give feedback amongst the team. Next we move on to the creation phase by providing a sketch to create a hand sample from. Once the sample is created and approved we’re ready to forward to the molding process and then full production. During all of this, the artwork for packaging is being designed to be ready as soon as the product is.
Behind The Scenes There is a ton of work behind the scenes on each and every item that I don’t think a retailer would understand unless they were developing items themselves. To outline it would consist of tons of meeting, data and 100s of details per item. The upside is that we’ve been
making products for years. We’ve all learned our lessons and harnessed our strengths within product development. Through decades of learning the process and everything that could go south, we are extremely efficient at successfully launching hundreds of items every year.
Staff Our team consists of about 70 employees. From everything from Purchasing, Accounting, IT, Warehouse Pick and Pack Personnel, Marketing and Customer Service to our seven XR Brands Sales Reps.
Staff Resources and Technology The advancement of tech has helped us so much. With the ability to automate orders using data feeds and sending tracking back the same way has enabled us to work with other tech savvy customers to ease the day to day workload of data entry. Utilizing digital catalogs instead of printed is the next step for
us. Cutting down on paper use and moving to a greener way is our goal. Most exciting is we are currently installing a new price shopping shipping tool which will allow us to find the most inexpensive method of shipping to our customers. This will be a huge savings to our customers that ship under our account.
The Future Everyday a new opportunity or synergy arises for us. In 5 years I see expansion on many levels. Increased partnerships and cobrands, improved knowledge, a powerhouse team, a larger facility and improved global availability of our entire lines.

CELEBRATES 10 YEARS How and when did the company start? I had left the industry for a year and a half after being in it for ten years. I needed a break. I went in to a totally different industry, but always felt I may wind up back in the adult biz at some point. I kept in touch with a lot of my former customers and we discussed the trends that were taking place, namely the decline
of DVD and needing to draw in more female customers, couples, etc. I was looking for things that I could distribute, never even thought about manufacturing until later. So, I started with 1 line. We were distributing Seven ‘Til Midnight lingerie. And everything just grew from there.

In terms of growth, where do you see yourselves now? We are continuously adapting to the markets and industry. With our recent acquisition of new brands in the last fourteen months, we now offer a very diverse range of products. Female-focused pleasure products, male-focused products, couples kits, lingerie, apparel, shoes, jewellery, accessories, and more.
How do you promote your company and create awareness? We host an annual warehouse show where we invite our top customers to see all of the newest products and go on a “shopping spree� in our warehouse. We also attend and exhibit at the majority of the shows in the industry, across the globe. ANME Founders, Expomark, Altitude, XBIZ. You can always find us there. As for social media, we have really just begun to scratch the surface. It is an additional way to reach our best customers, and possibly find new ones. What are some of your bestselling items? Without a doubt it is The Bodywand. Since its birth, we have sold over 2 million units. Between the traditional wands, USB rechargeable wands, mini massagers, gift sets, and more, there is something for everyone. The Bodywand also has a very successful international following. All plug-in wands can be used with multiple foreign plugs, such as AUS, EU, and UK. Four different languages are also printed on all of the packaging. It is not just another American knock-off. It is the real deal.
How is the global market in terms of distribution and retail evolving? Consumer knowledge and interaction has changed dramatically with the internet, social media, etc. I am full on right now educating store staff 48
and consumers about our items. I hired a person to literally travel the USA 48 weeks out of the year to do trainings, store events, etc. We will spend a week canvassing a particular city and teaching anyone who will listen!
What brands/product categories are you now manufacturing and how did you select these? We are manufacturing more products than ever before now, with the acquisition of brands such as The Rabbit Company, Baci Lingerie, OVO Lifestyle Toys and Whipsmart. Our brands reach all aspects of the industry, including apparel, lingerie, accessories, shows, jewellery, adult toys, and more!
Staff resources? I truly love our staff. They are dedicated, loyal, and hard working. We all spend time with
each other away from work too. We genuinely are all friends. It’s always a blast to work a trade show together. They each have their own techniques, but it is generally a combination of phone/email/text. For larger customers we go on the road and train them and their staff and get in to the stores to see what they need and want. We are always looking for customer feedback to improve our items and procedures.

When and how I got a job at IVD and Pleasure Productions my senior year in college. It was 1997. I changed all of my classes to night classes and worked during the day picking and packing VHS and beta tapes. It was great, it
A typical day was the heyday... Jenna, Vivid, Wicked, customers couldn’t wait to get new releases every day. A whole different world from what it is today. East Coast News had barely been started at this point.
I wake up at 6am, answer emails that came in overnight from China, then get to the office by 7:30. Start getting orders together for the warehouse and then get them started on their day at 8. I personally handle some store chains and distributors in the states and also most of our international clientele. I’ll work with the international customers in the early part of the day before they go home. Being that we are unique on the east coast we can correspond sooner than if we were on the west coast. I’ll check on the warehouse during the day and help pack or ship if needed.
The most significant influence in my working career I cannot thank Michael and Frank Koretsky enough. They believed in me at a very young age and allowed me to grow within their system and hone my craft. When I started the offices were very small. My office was directly between their 2 offices. We would laugh and joke but work hard all day and in to the night. This was before email!!! When we got our first AOL email account we all shared it, can you imagine? They were great times. Hustling and selling.
One of the most memorable moments After working in the warehouse for a year I transitioned to managing Pleasure Productions and our video licensing rights. I would manage international accounts, TV stations, hotels, cruise lines, and more. I started traveling a lot and meeting all sorts of amazing people around the world.

We are also active in sponsoring events such as Prides, Leather Contests, parties at local clubs, print magazines, online magazines and trade shows. 53
Focus Direct sales? Amazon, Ebay, your thoughts? I refuse to sell to both Amazon or eBay because I believe in a fair market place. Amazon is a massive company that wants to buy our brands at an extremely discounted price. This would be unfair to all the brick and mortar stores/customers that stock our brands.
What percentage of your product do you think is sold online vs brick and mortar stores? Our percentage of sales to online retailers have and continue to increase where as the brick and mortar stores constantly struggle to maintain their sales/ presence and keep up with online retailers. I have seen many of my customers go out of business. The latest customer to close their doors was Circus of Books in West Hollywood, California. They used to be one of my biggest customers 10 years ago, but the internet and online sales put them out of business.
What can you tell us about working with retailers? I enjoy working with retailers. They are the ones that are in front of the end consumer. The more supporting material they have in their stores, the easier it is for them to sell our brands.
What can you tell us about working with distributors? Distributors are a bit different to deal with, many are extremely good at what they do; however, some of them lack qualified sales staff and thus become “order takers�.
What are some of your best selling items? Our best-selling brand is still the Original Elbow Grease Cream. After 40 years in the market place, it is still our best-selling formula. The item we sell the most of is the Original Elbow Grease Cream 15 oz. Jar.
How has the global market in terms of distribution and retail evolved? Due to the internet, the world is now a small place and has made it easier for interested parties/ customers to be able to reach us.
Are there any country specific trends globally or are some countries more receptive to certain product categories over others? Certainly, there are trends that impact our sales. I would say it is more culture than trends. For example, our Elbow Grease Brand sells very well in the European Union, these countries

tend to have more of a liberal and accepting view about sex and sexual acts than a country like Mexico where religion is a huge part of their culture, thus making sex a taboo topic.
Tell us about the manufacturing process. What does it involve? Are there any aspect that retailers don’t have a great understanding or patience for? Perhaps you can outline the process from inception to delivering a finished product. Well, I do not want to bore your readers with such details but what I can say is that normally it takes an average of 10 weeks from step one of the manufacturing and mixing process at the laboratory to having the finished product in our warehouse.
What brands/product categories are you now manufacturing and how did you select these? We manufacture the following brands: Elbow Grease Creams, Elbow Grease Gel H2O, Fusion bodyglyde, Encounter Lubricants and Black Beauty Latex Polish.
What legal and compliance issues are there to deal with in regard to manufacturing? Compliance and legality issues are constantly changing everywhere in the world and we must constantly keep adapting to new regulations and procedures.
Where do you see the company now and where would you like it to be in 5 years? The company is doing well right now. We are experiencing an increase in sales and I believe it’s due to our focus on different age demographics, use of social media while maintaining focus on our loyal clientele. In 5 years, I still see our brand having a stronger presence in both local and global markets. I want us to continue to have fun while maintaining the high quality products that our customers have come to expect.

When and how: I began my employment with this company in January 1991. I was hired as a warehouse employee. A few years later I was promoted to office clerk, then I moved on to the sales department, after a while I was promoted to head the sales department. I eventually started overseeing the day to day operations and was promoted to Vice President. On August 2016 I purchased the company.
A typical day: My day starts out very early, I’m up at 5:00 am and in the office by 7:00 am. I like to come in before anybody else does so I can catch up on paperwork, look over the plans for the day.
The most significant influence in my working career was: My parents! They have always been such hard workers (they are retired now). They instilled in me the concept of not just being satisfied with doing a job but doing the best job possible! They taught me to be proud of my daily accomplishments. To treat everyone as I want to be treated with respect regardless
of their circumstances and accomplishments.
I’m most proud of: My mother, my father and my wife! They have all taught me patience, hard work, honesty, equality, kindness, I could go on forever, I am so very proud of them.
One of the most memorable moments was: When I graduated from college. I became the first member of my immediate family to become a college graduate.
Last book I read was: My taste in books varies, I read anything and everything, at present I am reading George R.R. Martin’s, A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms. It’s the prequel to his Game of Thrones book series.

Within lay an attractive, hot-pink cardboard Press pack and, like a pass-the-parcel of discretion, inside that again in its own branded box lay our Naked Addiction Rotating and Vibrating Dildo (henceforth ‘RAVD’).
Sometimes sex toys come in such gorgeous shades it’s hard to decide which one to choose. Take for example the Chaiamo vibrator which comes in either black, teal or burgundy: being a magpie for bright colours instinctively I’d probably choose the teal (although truthfully, it’s more of a Tiffany turquoise). However, the burgundy Chaiamo we received from Rocks-Off was quietly tasteful and very elegant, and ultimately I was pleased it’s the shade we were sent.

Closing with a clicking magnetic clasp, the white and rose-gold box was made of a superior quality card almost as heavy as its 8½” contents. The dildo itself was safely sealed, with a stickered warning on the plastic wrapping stating, ‘…silicone based lubricants…damages the finish and will void the warranty. Use water based lubricants only’ [sic]. Included is also a silky, fluff-defeating, storage bag! In keeping with the high standard of packaging and shiny satin bag, the slick design of the Naked Addiction RAVD pleasingly integrated its two control buttons in line with the realistic dorsal vein running the length of the dildo. Manufactured using platinum-cured IncrediFeelô silicone, this delightful cock featured a soft exterior over a firm interior, similar to the real thing. Boasting 5½” of insertable length and two cute and perfectly formed testes, unlike the real thing the RAVD had a circular suction cup at the base, which was also where the USB charger pin connected through a tiny, selfsealing hole. We were sent the black Queen size fitted sheet which came neatly packaged in a neutral, PVC, re-useable, zipped bag.
