Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest 2018–2019
The monumental museum building was created in eclectic neoclassical style. Its opening ceremony was held on 1 December 1906, in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph. The Hungarian Parliament provided for the foundation of the Museum of Fine Arts for the 1896 millennium of Hungarian statehood. The new museum was aimed to collect and present a chronological overview of Hungarian and European art. Contrary to many European national collections, the museum was not based on a royal art collection, but on the donations of Hungarian aristocrats, prelates, and wealthy citizens. The museum was composed of paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings from the Hungarian National Museum, together with European paintings, prints, and drawings deriving from the collections of Hungarian noble families, most importantly the Esterházys. Because of the Esterházy family’s financial difficulties, the Hungarian state purchased their precious art collection in 1871, which was added to the items of the Hungarian National Picture Gallery. These two collections formed the basis of the new, most important national fine art museum, whose building was erected on Heroes’ Square at the end of Andrássy Avenue. Through the past hundred years the collections of the museum have been enriched and modified, and as a consequence, new departments were formed. Originally, the Museum of Fine Arts also comprised Hungarian art, but as both the Hungarian and foreign collections have in creased significantly, their separation became inevitable. After the Hungarian National Gallery was established, the Museum of Fine Arts’ profile became the exhibition, collection, and scientific processing of international art. The institution became a centre for intense international collaboration and research. The Museum of Fine Arts not only organises independent exhibitions in different museums around the world, but also hosts various foreign exhibitions. The institution has developed a major role in the international art scene. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Hungarian National Gallery were reunited in 2012. The reconstruction of the museum building at Heroes’ Square started in 2015. The reconstruction is now completed and the museum has been reopened with enlarged and modernised exhibition spaces in the autumn of 2018. The works of Hungarian art before 1800 will be exhibited here again, in the context of European art. The newly arranged exhibitions display the masterpieces of Egyptian and Classical Antiquities, Old Masters’ Paintings, the Sculp tural Collection, the Old Hungarian Collection, and the Collection of Prints and Drawings.
The historic building amalgamates the features of various historical styles. The imposing spaces of the Marble Hall, the Renaissance Hall, the Romanesque Hall, and the Baroque Hall are suitable for receptions for 1000 people or seated dinners for 750 people. The classical sites for various events are currently enjoying a renaissance: the newly reconstructed Museum of Fine Arts offers all the comforts of a modernised building. Upon request, the organised event may also include a cultural experience in a form of an exclusive guided tour in one of our permanent or temporary exhibitions. We also offer customised event packages with special gifts.
Event Venue
Marble Hall
The hall that opens by the entrance is a representative reception area. Its name originates from the marble floor and wall covering. On the two sides of the hall two staircases with balustrades lead up to the first floor. Their columned resting galleries offer view to the hall.

Renaissance Hall
The Renaissance Hall of the Museum of Fine Arts is dec orated by the finest pieces of our unique fresco collection of Bergamo and Perugia from the 14th–15th centuries. The Venetian wells exhibited in the hall recount of the high expertise of Italian stone-cutters and sculptors of the time.

Romanesque Hall
This hall evokes a medieval church interior. Its colourful paintings and the copies of the gates of the Freiburg and Alba Iulia cathedrals make the area even more sublime. The wall paintings follow Christian iconography: figurative, ornamental, and heraldic symbols surround the images of Hungarian saints and historical figures. The hall was greatly damaged in World War II, and had been closed for the past seventy years. It has now been renovated and reopened for visitors. For this hall, a special set of gifts is available to be distributed at the events.

Baroque Hall
This hall was designed to represent a baroque-style palace court and to evoke the atmosphere of aristocratic collec tions. The paintings shown here belong to the Italian ba roque collection of the Old Masters’ Paintings. The hall will open for visitors in Autumn 2020.

Michelangelo Hall
The freshly refurbished room had housed museum offices before the renovation. From 2018 it will be the ideal space for small exhibitions or conferences, partner meetings, and banquets.

Schickedanz Hall
The charming room on the first floor was named after Albert Schikedanz, the architect of the museum building. It is ideal for holding workshops and small conferences, and is equipped with all necessary built-in technologies.
