By Bruce Holmquist General Manager, Canadian Simmental AssociationA Great Place to Be!
At the time of writing this article, many Simmental breeders are well in 2023 calving. Each trip to the calving barn is an opportunity for a new calf to be discovered, and to see if our mating decisions that were made over nine months ago have paid dividends. Bull sale catalogues are also being prepared along with the process of taking pictures and video while doing daily chores and calving. It is an incredibly busy time for all.
2022 wrapped up in fine fashion with some very successful female sales that were some of the highlights of the entire beef cattle seed-stock sales. These culminated with two record setting dispersal sales that saw several new breeders join the Simmental family with their first purchases, as well as some other operations that will grow and strengthen their existing herds through animals they bought. While it is always sad to see breeders and friends move onto the next chapters of their lives, it is inevitable, and we are fortunate to still have their genetics as part of the Simmental breed going forward.
2023 is shaping up to be another busy and exciting year for Simmental in Canada. The bull sales are going to be stocked with a deeper selection of top-quality animals than ever before, and there will be bulls available in all price ranges.
Some of the events being organized for the CSA membership are led by the redevelopment of the YCSA Youth T.E.A.M Leadership Conference that will be held in Calgary in May. Following that we will be hosting the 2023 CSA Convention in Ancaster, Ontario. The Ontario Simmental Association is hard at work planning a busy and entertaining schedule that will play host to Simmental breeders and other industry partners. Included in the schedule is the CSA Annual General Meeting, the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation auction, and also the Young Canadian Simmental Association National Classic. We expect a very large group of YCSA members to participate from all regions of Canada.
As we move into the fall, there will again be numerous shows and events that will be held across Canada and will feature the 2023 National Simmental Show which will be held during Brandon Ag-Ex in Manitoba. It is going to be a busy year so be sure to check the Simmental Country calendar of events, and e-news for further information.
Come out and enjoy the Simmental excitement, it’s a great place to be!
How to Tattoo an Animal
Tattoo letters are a unique combination of three (3) or four (4) letters allotted to a person by the National Breed Association for that person’s exclusive use in identifying, tattooing, and registering animals with their association.
All animals must be identified with an ear tattoo in order to be eligible for registration in the Canadian Simmental Association books as follows:
• All calves born in Canada must be identified by an ear tattoo before the animal is six (6) Months of age
• All imported animals must be identified by an ear tattoo using the Canadian owners tattoo letters or such other letters as may be required by the association.
• An ear tattoo is a unique combination of tattoo letters, followed by a number of up to 4 digits to identify the animal, followed by a year letter. The first number in a letter cannot be a zero (0).
• No two (2) animals, regardless of sex, may have the same ear tattoo within a 22-year cycle of the year letters.
• The letters I, O, Q, and V are not used.
• As proper identification of animals is the basis for the purebred industry, this is the most important factor a breeder should consider. Animals can be turned away from shows, sales, and for export purposes because of improper, indistinct, or just plain erroneous tattoos. Placing a tattoo on an animal should be a simple matter, but it seems it causes many breeders problems mainly because not enough care is taken at the time the tattoo is applied. Read these tips over, inspect your cattle tattoos when you have a moment, evaluate your present technique, and see if you can improve on your own tattooing method.
• Tools of the trade: tattoo pliers, small brush (a toothbrush works well) for rubbing paste into the tattoo letters, rag for cleaning ears, alcohol as solvent to wet rag to remove wax, tube of paste ink. Don’t store the tattoo letters in a pile at the bottom of a container, the points will become bent or dull. Clean, sharp, straight needles make for good tattoos.
• Applying the tattoo: select a spot between the ribs, well into the ear and well away from the hairy edges of the ear. Press firmly and release, pressing the ear away from the pliers if necessary to avoid tearing the skin. Note that if the punctures made are indistinct or ripped, leave it to heal for a week and try again. Avoid hitting a rib, as this causes excess bleeding and will result in one side of the puncture being too shallow and the other side too deep, making a poor tattoo. N.B. Extremely important to thoroughly clean the dirt and wax from the ear.
• Apply the ink to the ear. There are many types of ink, but paste is recommended. Colors vary, but green works best.
Hints on a successful tattooing
• Don’t put the paste directly on the tattoo needles, work the paste into the punctures with the brush. If any blood appears, apply more paste, and rub it in until the bleeding stops. If the tattoo is a good one, the excess ink may be removed immediately, but usually it is left on to help minimize bleeding.
• Don’t place tattoos in the hairy edges. Remember when doing calves, place the tattoo well into the ear. As the calf grows, the hairy edge works into the ear.
• A good tattoo, well into the ear, away from the hairy outer edges and plainly visible is the desired result. Place the breeder letters in the top, running between the first and second ribs.
• The use of a flashlight speeds up the reading of tattoos, but well placed, distinct tattoos should require no aid to read them. Don’t confuse 6s and 9s. Once you’ve placed the tattoos in the pliers, check on a piece of cardboard before placing in the ear.
Do what you love and call it work...
Breed IMPROVEMENT
By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental AssociationThe Accountable Cow Herd
One of the definitions of Accountable is to be “subject to giving an account of: answerable” (Merriam Webster). I think this is a valuable concept when thinking about performance reporting, particularly in the context of Whole Herd Enrolment (WHE).
The concept behind WHE is reporting on the production of every cow, every year. This has several valuable outcomes. Perhaps the most obvious is making each cow “answerable” or “giving an account of” her production each year. Having an accountable cowherd is essential for getting at the genetic components of fertility which have a major impact on the profitability of users of Simmental seedstock. Understanding what a cow produced, when and why she did not produce and when/if she exited the cow herd are important measures for breeders and their customers.
Over time, we all have favourite cows that end up aging well in our herds. These cows likely represent a mating or genetic combination that worked really well, however they also often provide a distorted or nostalgic picture of genetic merit. These old cows are a good example. That favourite old cow from Herdsire A may produce a fond remembrance of Herdsire A and his maternal excellence and how well his daughters performed. By holding each cow accountable, every year it may present a very different picture. Herdsire A may have sired some winners but may have also had a very high proportion of daughters fall out of the herd early. Is the maternal value of Herdsire A the same if 80% of his daughters make it to 6 years of age, or if 10% of his daughters make it to 10 years of age? Is a Herdsire worth more if 60% of his daughters produce 5 average calves in their lifetime or if 20% of his daughters produce 5 above average calves in their lifetime.
These questions don’t necessarily have straightforward answers, the key concept is that by providing an account of each cow’s production every year, we can examine and answer these questions for the various situations that Simmental genetics are expected to excel at.
The other area that is sometimes overlooked is the impact of making every cow accountable to give true credibility to the mating decisions and cattle that really excelled in a production system. It is tempting to report on just the better calves in a herd, for example sending weaning weights on the calves that are worthy of registration. This approach does not hold each cow accountable, but also fails the best calves in the herd. If for example,
we don’t report on the bottom 25% of calves (or cows) are we giving those subpar cows a free pass? Perhaps it is simply a mating that did not work. Is there value in measuring mating combinations that do not produce the desired results? As well, by not reporting on the bottom end, we have artificially raised the herd average and disadvantaged the better calves as they cannot be compared to their full contemporary grouping. In other words, the amount that the best calves excel over the entire group is higher than the amount they excel over the top 75%.
An example scenario using 100 calves with weaning weights ranging from 600 to 700 pounds in 1 pound increments can show the potential impact. The impact in real life with a greater spread in weights will be much greater, but in this simple scenario, we have negatively impacted the top 25 weaning weight calves in the cow herd by 11 pounds. Remember, in real life, failing to report the bottom calves will have a much larger impact on those top calves.
Cows are cows and they do cow things that may in fact make 100% complete reporting an impossibility sometimes (ever have a cow escape on weaning day or get lost in a large pasture?), however it is important to the best of our ability to hold each cow to account every year. Doing so provides the best possible picture of fertility and maternal genetics and ensures that our best calves are given due credit for how well they are performing. Failure of a cow herd to provide an account is unfair to the herd and the breeder of that herd. Members are encouraged to submit complete breeding, pregnancy, calving, weaning and disposal data on their cowherds. This level of accountability provides benefits to the cow, the herd and the breed moving forward.

Vets ADVICE
By Roy Lewis, DVMThe Cold Weather May Make Semen Evaluating Frustrating.
Winter and cold weather don’t make for great semen evaluation. This winter has been great so far except for one deep freeze but cold weather at the wrong time can really raise havoc with semen evaluating plans. Semen results on young bulls and herd sires may not be all that desirable to start with. As a result, we may see more bulls deferred especially because of semen defects in winter. Don’t panic and work with your veterinarian as they can best advise what the final outcome might be and even give a rough idea of when the bulls could potentially see their semen scores rise if there has been an extended period of stress from really cold weather.
The extremely cold weather causes anything from inactivity in the bulls and stagnant semen to issues with cold shock to the sperm. Both these things can cause sperm abnormalities and a failing semen score. Defects like bent tails, DMR’s, detached heads and other defects. The bull may be tried right there again a second time to see if any improvement. Mature bulls are even tried a third time right then and there.
Some veterinarians are doing a real good thing in the cold weather knowing tests may be iffy at best. They are going through and measuring the bulls at least palpating both the testicles and palpating the internal sex glands such as the seminal vesicle’s for any signs of enlargement scarring etc. They then lightly ejaculate the bulls to get protrusion of the penis so they can be proactive checking for warts, cuts, hair rings or ligamentous tie backs (persistent frenulum’s) on the penis. Persistent frenulum’s are an interesting phenomenon. They are heritable and there is no female counterpart. Commercial cattlemen then have no issue to buy a bull that has had a frenulum as all male offspring become steers. Purebred breeders on the other hand want to avoid using one as a herd sire as incidence in his purebred bull calf offspring will go up. The best example I can use was a small Angus purebred breeder had three out of eight bulls with persistent frenulum’s an extremely high number whereas on average I might see one every 100 bulls or so. If any pus (white blood cells) in the semen the bull is potentially treated with anti-microbials. Checking all these things goes a long-ways to insure when the bulls are breeding soundness examined later that they are much more likely to pass with no unexpected problems. The beauty of this system is the actual test day then becomes a recheck day as well on these other problems.
We can test bulls in pretty cold weather but we must have heat to look after the microscope, the veterinarian and the semen sample. We need to be careful to not coldshock the sample as this may lead to bent tails which are caused by the cold shock itself and not the fault of the bull. You as a producer must realize that many of these so-called rusty loads are just that and the bulls simply need to be redone. If the bulls can be naturally stimulated by having cycling cows or heifers even if cull ones near by that will go along ways to insuring they have fresh semen to examine and it will be a truer test of their real fertility.
Frostbite is always hard to assess as the bulls can pull up their testicles and even though the scrotal skin may be scarred and sloughing off you don’t know until you test as to the degree of damage to the formation and maturation of the sperm. Also, damage may be reversible and of course there is lots of inflammation with the scab sloughing off. Other bulls have lots of tag on them and if tag freezes onto the testicles that can also lead to frostbite. Other bulls even though lots of bedding stand backed into the wind and experience huge wind-chill. Again, each case needs to be assessed on its own merits.
All purebred breeders should also test their main herd bulls as they are often assumed to be okay, but one never knows. Also, purebred breeders at least initially run with single sire mating’s so if the one bull is infertile can have disastrous consequences to their breeding program. Commercial breeders commonly test every bull every year. Even if a bull has two breeding seasons yearly it is wise to test just before each breeding season as you never know what may have happened over the winter or between the two breeding seasons. I am sure many of you advise your commercial customers of the great benefits of semen evaluating. I am always amazed as to how consistent veterinarian to veterinarian we are in this procedure.
We can find bulls with one testicle severely damaged but from an ability to breed and get cows pregnant standpoint they may still be fertile (good semen coming from the one undamaged testicle) and are good to perhaps keep as a spare even. The breeding capacity may be reduced somewhat as only one testicle is functioning but still can be a functional bull. Your veterinarian would be best to advise as the future use for your bulls. Again, most veterinarians will advise giving the necessary vaccines to the bulls and possibly treating for internal and external parasites. Let’s hope semen evaluating goes well for you this spring and there are no unexpected surprises. There are newer and newer technology making the procedure of electroejaculation much smoother. There is way less vocalization, going down and the amount or success of the collection is improved.
Most purebred breeders semen collection and evaluation is a very big day and lots rides on it. Pick the appropriate day and make sure you have adequate help and that the veterinarian can set up his microscope in a warm location. Restraint will depend on the veterinarian as I like to keep the heads free in the chute and find less will go down as well. Happy Semen Evaluating this spring everyone and I hope all the bull sales go as well as last year. There are lots of variables with every semen evaluation day from age of the bull. If you get no sample and all other things seem fine it may just be he ejaculated on the way to the chute and you simple have an empty tank of semen. Patience and tincture of time goes a long ways when it comes to semen evaluation day.

Saskatchewan Farm Girl
FOCUSED ON THE 2024 OLYMPICS
BY LEE HARTIf you think carrying pails of grain to feed cattle might have little to do with career development, ask Saskatchewan farm girl Alexis Ashworth what activities might have helped her become one of the top women weightlifting competitors in the Commonwealth.
It wasn’t just feeding buckets of barley to Simmental cattle, or 10 years of playing female hockey that led Ashworth to earn a silver medal in women’s weightlifting at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England last August. But that physical conditioning certainly helped.
“I didn’t have a lot of professional coaching, but I did have natural strength,” says Ashworth. “And I have to credit doing chores on the farm and playing hockey, at least in part, for helping to develop that overall strength. “
In the coming months she will take that natural strength and talent, add in some professional coaching, participate in qualifying events and hopefully be part of the weight lifting sport on even bigger stage—the 2024 summer Olympics in Paris France.
Her plans for the Olympics were greatly encouraged by the Commonwealth Games success. She hadn’t been with the sport very long before the COVID-19 Pandemic locked down much of the world in early 2020. So in-person training and competing were somewhat limited for more than a year.
To place second in her sport at the Commonwealth Games is a great achievement but attempting to make the Olympics is a whole different ballpark.
It will involve much physical and mental training over the next year and a half. Ashworth will need to partake in several qualifying meets, where she must do very well in at least one to quality. The new qualification process has been revised since the 2020 summer Olympics.
“It seems it is becoming more and more challenging to qualify for the Olympics,” she says. “First, you must be ranked top 10 in the world in one of the five
respected weight classes. However, Canada is only allowed to send three females this go around. That means, for example, if five of us qualify for the Olympic committee then it goes on to look at who is ranked higher in the world. So you actually have to be paying attention to where other females are ranked in weight classes that normally have nothing to do with yours.
“I just have to stay focused,” says Ashworth, who also wrapped up 2022 by achieving a nursing degree from the University of Saskatchewan in Regina. “Weightlifting requires physical strength but there is also a huge technical and mental component as well. It involves just thinking about every aspect of the lift, staying in the moment, and not thinking too far ahead. So for the next year and half I am devoting myself to training and giving it my best shot.”
Ashworth was born and raised on the family-owned Ashworth Farm and Ranch, a purebred Simmental cattle and grain farm at Oungre, about 45 minutes south of Weyburn.
Along with her parents, Kelly and Janice Ashworth, family members include her three siblings, brothers, Kyle and Owen, and sister Brittany. Annual crop rotation includes durum, spring wheat, winter wheat, canola, flax, peas and lentils; while they also produce pasture and hay land to serve their 300 head of purebred Simmental cows.
The 23-year-old Ashworth says she didn’t grow up with her sights set on being an Olympic athlete. It just sort of happened.
It started in Grade 12 as her sister introduced the sports-minded teenager to Cross Fit training just as a way to keep active and fit. Cross fit involves a number of physical activities, including weight lifting.
“I had played hockey for about 10 years and was looking for something to keep me in shape during the off season and my sister suggested cross fit training,” says Ashworth.
She found she had somewhat of a natural talent for the weightlifting component, and an observant coach encouraged her to attend a weight lifting meet. She attended her first weightlifting meet in the fall of 2019, did well and after participating in subsequent events it wasn’t long before she qualified for both Western Canadian Weightlifting Championship as well as the Senior National Championships.
But early in 2020 as restrictions related to the COVID19 Pandemic were imposed, the in-person aspect of many activities came to a grinding halt. There were no meets, no training facilities open, everything went virtual including her University of Saskatchewan nursing studies. Ashworth returned home, set up a gym in part of the farm shop and continued training on her own.
As COVID restrictions relaxed in 2021, sports meets resumed and she got to attend a live weight lifting competition in Kelowna, B.C.
“I had been training and still had very little experience at competing, but I did well at the Kelowna event,” says Ashworth.
She competes in the women’s 71 kg weight category. The objective is to have her own body weight as close to 71 kg as possible without going over. The competition involves three lifts in two standard weightlifting disciplines — the snatch (a one-more lift with a wide grip), and the clean and jerk (a closegripped, two part lift).
At the Kelowna event she achieved a personal best, lifting 90 kilograms in the snatch and 110 kilograms in the clean and jerk.
There were more competitions ahead, and Ashworth’s big opportunity came in February 2022 as she attended the Canadian Invitational, a sanctioned International Weightlifting Federation event in Scarborough, Ont.
At the Ontario competition, Ashworth won three gold medals and broke three Saskatchewan records by posting a 98-kilogram snatch and a 122kg clean and jerk for a total weight of 220kg in the women’s 71-kilogram division. That result gave her the current No. 1 weight class ranking in Canada and a berth in the Commonwealth Games.
With those medals under her belt, and in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, she decided to hire a professional coach and began working with Wil Fleming based in Bloomington, Indiana. Initially Ashworth and her coach connected through virtual on-line training sessions. The well-respected American coach was impressed with what he saw, according to an article in the Regina Leader Post.
“It is so unusual to hear of somebody getting that good without a coach,” Fleming told Leader Post reporter Greg Harder. “You have to be so mentally tough and strong-willed to do that. Obviously, Alexis is extremely talented. Having spoken to Canadian coaches and fellow American coaches who are aware of her, they’re drooling over her talent. They’re saying “oh my goodness, this girl could be anything. She could be an Olympic medalist. The sky is the limit.”
Prior to heading to the Commonwealth Games, Ashworth spent about a week in Indiana training with Fleming in person. She says being able to improve her technical weightlifting skills was extremely valuable at the Commonwealth Games.
At the Commonwealth Games in August, with her parents looking on, Ashworth posted an impressive performance, finishing second in the women’s 71-kilogram division with a total lift of 214kg. Sarah Davies of England was first at 229kg while India’s Harjinder Kaur (212kg) earned the bronze medal.
After the Commonwealth Games, she returned home, continued training and also completed her nursing degree at the U of S.
“For the next few months I am going to concentrate on training,” says Ashworth. “It is important to have that nursing career to come back to at some point. I will see how far I can go with the weightlifting, and while I don’t like to talk about it, there is always a risk of injury, which could sideline the sports career. The nursing career will be there.”
Ashworth says she can’t underestimate the value of growing up on a farm has played in the success of her sport and nursing careers.
She started out with the 4-H beef club at the age of 6 and remained active in 4-H through until her late teens. She was also always actively involved with farm chores as time permitted. That ranged from helping out with meal preparation to feed farm workers, working with the cattle, or being out in the field running a combine at harvest as needed.
“I believe anyone who has grown up on a farm recognizes the benefits that it plays in your life,” says Ashworth. “You certainly learn it can involve hard work, leading to a strong work ethic. You also learn how to deal with adversities, realizing that not everything turns out the way we’d like. Living with adversity is part of life. And along with that you also learn to have a positive attitude. There are a lot of things you can’t control, but if you stay focused and do your best you’ll get to where you want to go.”
Elevating the Importance of Genetics in the Beef Production
Sandy Russell, CEO Canadian Beef Breeds Council
2022 was an extremely busy and exciting year for the Canadian Beef Breeds Council as we worked to focus on our key priorities for the organization and ultimately drive value for our members by advancing the importance of genetics within the Canadian beef industry. We were thrilled to see a large number of our members, industry partners and stakeholders gather for our Annual General Meeting on November 28 at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina where we were able to reflect on the progress that had been made and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.
At our 2021 Annual General Meeting we outlined four key priority areas for CBBC. Those priorities were:
1. Strengthening the financial standing of CBBC long term;
2. Advancing membership value and growth;
3. Elevating industry engagement; and
4. Driving the Canadian Beef Improvement Network (CBIN).
We have worked hard to deliver tangible results in relation to these key priority areas and were pleased to report our achievements in relation to these priorities and acknowledged the work that still lies ahead. Along with the traditional reports, we were able to showcase the progress made on the CBIN initiative and have Dr. Steve Miller, Director of AGBU from Australia provide a thought-provoking presentation reminding us of the value of genetics in beef cattle production to a large room of CBBC members and industry stakeholders.
During the AGM the CBBC members also confirmed their support for the current focus of our leadership on the aforementioned priorities and the work being done to achieve results for the membership by re-electing the Board of Directors for 2023. As a result, we are pleased to report that our 2023 CBBC Board of Directors are as follows:
• David Sibbald - Chair
• Marlin Leblanc – Co-Vice Chair
• Shawn Wilson – Co-Vice Chair
• Kevin Blair
• Ken Friesen
• Amanda Matthews
• Graham McLean
• Rod McLeod
• Hal Nixdorff
• Scott Severtson
• Dennis Serhienko
• Brett Wildman
Throughout the past year these directors have provided invaluable direction and considerable time to achieving the vision of CBBC and its initiatives. I look forward to continuing to work with this diverse group of leaders in the industry to achieve further outcomes for our members and continue to elevate the recognition of the role that genetic advancement plays in the overall success of the Canadian beef industry.
Throughout the past year, the CBIN initiative has been the focus of much of our work and continues to advance rapidly. As we have outlined on several occasions, the following four-step development plan for CBIN remains our overarching goal:
1. Build the Data Foundation: Build an operational system that will standardize data collection amongst participating Breed Associations;
2. Facilitate Data Linkages: Develop a cross-sector genetic data hub that will facilitate linkages of genetic data to traditional production metric.
3. Translate Data: Create the analytical resources to assist in the translation of genetic data into informed decisions that allow increased value capture from conception to consumption; and
4. Drive Adoption: Advance the understanding of the value of genetic data incorporation and resource utilization across the entire beef production system.
With this broad vision in mind, we will be able to provide genetic information and analytical tools that will help capture the full value of genetics across the entire beef production chain.
Those in attendance at our AGM were able to see first-hand the new registry portal that is being developed. The new system was met with very positive feedback, much excitement for what has been accomplished through the collaborative effort and hard work of many and anticipation for the opportunities that the system will provide for our members. With the first stage of development advancing, we are shifting our focus to facilitating the data linkages that will truly capture value across the entire industry. The leadership from within our CBIN Advisory Panel, along with our CBBC Board of Directors continues to drive for success through focused advancements in CBIN. While we know the task ahead is large and there will be bumps in the road along the way, collectively we continue to make strides forward in achieving that broad vision.
Often it feels as though there isn’t much we can control in the beef industry but with the right information and resources there are things within our control that will generate increased value within our individual businesses and at the broader industry level. Genetic selection decisions are one of those things. The importance of genetics in the beef business has often been minimized or even forgotten altogether at times but CBBC has worked hard recently to shift the conversation and raise the awareness of the value that genetics offers to our industry. While changes and advancements seldom occur overnight, we hope you have started to see some of the fruits of our labour with genetics being discussed around more tables and being part of the solutions for success in the Canadian beef industry. The seedstock sector has a large role to play in driving value in beef production and through the collaborative effort of CBIN we are collectively building the resources to allow the Canadian beef industry to fully capture the value of genetics. The work ahead is substantial but so too are the opportunities. CBBC members, stakeholders and members believe the reward is worth the investment.

It didn’t take long for board members and staff at the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) to get back into the swing of things following the holiday season. The promise of a new year has brought a renewed energy to push forward on key policy files impacting cattle producers across the country, investing in our next generation, and continuing conversations with government and consumers about how raising cattle in Canada is part of the climate change solution.
January 1, 2023, saw new regulations come into force designed to further improve safety and address driver fatigue. These regulations mandate the use of Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) by federally regulated carriers and work hand in hand with Hours of Service rules for commercial drivers. These new regulations are in addition to the recently amended Humane Transport Regulations for Livestock, which limits the withdrawal of feed, water and rest (FWR) to 36 hours for weaned cattle in transit.
Safety is paramount and should never be compromised, but for the livestock industry this important issue extends further than motor vehicle safety. Commercial drivers are responsible for the welfare of the livestock they are hauling and any changes to the regulations should also consider their unique needs.
While all commercial drivers must be prepared to handle possible emergencies and adverse driving conditions, the transport of livestock can have additional unforeseen delays that can result in impacts to welfare of the animals. Any delays in loading, unloading or at border crossings count as “on-duty time”. This is problematic for livestock haulers as a driver cannot simply pull over and go “off- duty” as they could with inert freight. Most livestock trailers are passively ventilated and require movement to maintain an appropriate environment. It is often not feasible to unload animals during unexpected delays due to limited rest facilities, animal stress, and biosecurity risks.
CCA is working with a coalition of national livestock associations to actively engage the Government of Canada to address the aspects of the regulations that may unintentionally compromise the welfare of live animals (and bees). Collectively, we are proposing harmonization with the transportation regulations in the United States (U.S.), which provide an exemption of drivers’ on-duty time with a 150-mile air radius (240 km) of their load origin and destination. We are also asking for clarity on enforcement so drivers know how and when emergency situations can allow them to extend their time driving to best manage the welfare of the animals in their care. This flexibility is key and should come into play only occasionally.
As we move forward on this file, it’s impossible not to think about Reg Schellenberg and his strong dedication and passion for animal health and care. He strived to bring common sense recommendations to government that acknowledged the unique circumstances facing the Canadian beef industry, while ensuring the proper care and welfare of animals. Traveling to his funeral it was striking to me how vast Canada is, reminding me that policy and regulations need to take this into account.
CCA also continues to push on one of our key budget asks for the establishment of a Canadian vaccine bank for foot and mouth disease (FMD) through conversations with Parliamentarians and department officials. In recognition of the strong integration of the North American beef value chain, the CCA has collaborated with our counterparts in the United States (U.S.) and Mexico to call with a united voice for continued investment in FMD vaccine banks in each country.
Canada’s establishment of this critical infrastructure will be a major milestone in our preparedness against the threat of FMD. In anticipation, CCA is providing leadership to national and international collaborative efforts on emergency planning and preparedness. Domestically, through Animal Health Canada, CCA is working with government and other at-risk commodities to ensure the vaccine bank can be operationalized effectively in an emergency situation. Internationally, we have identified a shared need for continuity of business plans for use in a possible FMD outbreak in North America.
Our young leaders also kicked off the year on a strong note with a total of six representatives from our leadership development programs travelling to Denver, Colorado. Trip participants took in the National Western Stock Show, industry tours, and networking opportunities with representatives from the beef industry in the U.S. to better understand how cooperation and collaboration between our countries supports and maintains our integrated supply chain, helps add value on both side of the border, and dealing with issues of importance to Canadian and American beef producers. A special thanks goes out to the Consulate General of Canada in Denver for their efforts in coordinating an interesting program for our young leaders and providing funding to support their travels.
We are very proud of the opportunities our youth programs provide to strengthen the next generation of our industry. We encourage any youth, ages 18-35, interested in getting more involved in the Canadian beef industry and wanting to make an impact to consider applying for the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders program. The application period is now open and closes on March 31, 2022. Apply today using the QR code below.
In closing, I am looking forward to being in Ottawa to celebrate Canada’s Agriculture Day on February 15. This event provides an excellent opportunity to build on the conversations we have been having with Parliamentarians, government officials, and consumers about the important contributions that Canadian cattle producers make to addressing food insecurity, helping secure our economic recovery following the pandemic, and being a part of the climate change solution.

Our Deepest Condolences
Frank Rodney James
July 26, 1932 – December 2, 2022
Rod passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Tudor Manor, Okotoks. We were so happy to have celebrated his 90th birthday this July with many family and friends. Rod is survived by one sister Marjorie, brother in law Herb, his three children Bob (Heather), Lorna (Cathy), Ann (Ron), stepdaughter Heather (Keith), stepson Rob (Barb), 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson, plus a very large extended family. He was predeceased by grandson Randy.
Rodney had cattle, especially purebred cattle, in his blood from an early age. Improving Canada’s beef herds was paramount through his life. He was one of the first to bring Charolais from the States in 1958, (at the age of 26), was instrumental in bringing Charolais, Simmental and other breeds from Europe, started several beef breed magazines, set up a beef operation in Nova Scotia, and started Purebred Sales Management companies to market these new breeds. Charcan and later Transcon Livestock Corp. sales management companies and selling Simmental and Charolais, were the passion for most of his life. He was supported by his first wife Pearl through these endeavours. Then in 1985, in a major departure from the beef industry, Rod and second wife Mernie purchased the Ginger Tea Room on main street Okotoks. When there wasn’t a square inch in that building not filled with merchandise, and tea room area was too small, they decided they had to expand and built the new Ginger Room on Riverside Drive, moving in May of 1990. That business they ran until 2001.
The Ginger Room and land base became important in different ways. The back acre was sold and it and an adjoining parcel became the Heartland Retirement Complex where he resided after selling his house. The Ginger Room building was purchased by the Okotoks United Church and they built a beautiful sanctuary on the back where his service will be held.

Scholarship Won: Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation $3,000 Treherne MB
I was first introduced to the Simmental breed when I began dating, my now husband Anthony Wilcox, back in 2009. We are married and have had three children, Emma, Daxson, and Cade. We decided to move back home to rural Manitoba where we built our home on the Wilcox farm. Wilcox Simmentals was where we started and we have now embraced Wilcox Livestock, as we have extended into breeding purebred Speckle Park cattle, as well as increasing our purebred Simmental herd. We are raising our children in the cattle program and our oldest will be in her first year of 4H this year. We currently reside on the farm in Treherne, MB where we work both on the farm with our cattle, as well as off in our careers. I work in emergency medicine as a Registered Nurse providing care to our rural population, many of which are our farmers. I grew up in rural Manitoba and attended the University of Manitoba where I graduated with my bachelor’s in nursing degree. I decided to apply to return to school this fall to obtain my master’s degree, where I was accepted at the University of Manitoba. I am working hard to push for positive influences on our health care system and create changes regarding our rural health care. Although I am not in an agricultural- based study, once completed, I intend to bring my advanced education back to rural Manitoba and continue with our progress in the cattle industry.
