INTRODUCTION How can I even begin to tell you how much we want to return with you to the Tabakalera terrace?! This summer, we once again welcome Ud-ha taking sunshade and camping chair with us: performing arts, openair cinema, and live music, with that lovely coolness of the good weather months.

Ah, and we’ll also be doing some walking, lots of walking, in Cristina Enea Park, for example. Because it’s right here, next to us, and is always so happy to have us. And because, on its lawn, under its starry skies, we shall screen…movies! 4 Dreams. Four Summer Nights. With Shakespeare observing us.

Chlorophytum comosum. Chlorophytum comosum. Chlorophytum comosum. Well, yes, that, or spider plant, or airplane plant, or St. Bernard’s lily, or ribbon plant. We’re not getting all highfalutin and encrypted here. We’re going to turn Tabakalera green! Summer and plant life, taking over the old tobacco factory.

And in September, International Film Students Meeting. But before that, let’s not go so fast, we shall once again be stopping off at the border with Mugak, a project in which we will be able to hear very interesting voices, as interesting as those we will also hear in the Programme for Artists, conducted by Itziar Okariz and Jon Mikel Euba.

And for the following months… another tricky question!: how can fictionalized reality help us to understand the world? We promise no answers (we’ll leave that in your hands) but we shall give you some clues, in our new exhibition: The Music of Ramón Raquello and his Orchestra, curated by Eric Baudelaire, one of the guests at the II International Film Seminar, entitled, What can an image do We shall reflect upon that through texts, processes and debates.

And let’s not forget two summer classics: campsites and intensive workshops. What would summer time be like without SummerLab at Hirikilabs, or without all the invigorating Summer Workshops of Ubik? Or if we didn’t have Kamaleoiak gara! for the whole family, or if we couldn’t enjoy all the other things we have in store for you…which you’ll find out if you continue reading! We’ll let you have our camping chair, so you can sit and do so quietly. Here it is, take it! This is where we’ll be pitching our sunshade.

Having set the ball rolling last year with our own look at musical cinema, we’ve decided this year to ask director and film-programmer Chiara Marañón to come up with something for our open air screenings. And what we’ve got is a season on the road-movie imaginary throughout the history of the cinema. She’s thought of seven films that strike at the heart of the imaginary of travel and the road. 14 JULY

ERIC BAUDELAIRE. THE MUSIC OF RAMÓN RAQUELLO AND HIS ORCHESTRA Artist: Eric Baudelaire

Tuesday to Thursday: 12:00 – 20:00 Friday: 12:00 – 21:00 Saturday: 10:00 – 21:00 Sundays and holidays: 10:00 – 20:00 Exhibition Hall

The Music of Ramon Raquello and his Orchestra is the first large-scale solo exhibition by Eric Baudelaire in a public institution in Spain. The work of artist and producer Eric Baudelaire naturally spans the artistic and cinematographic realms. Taking archive material, and sitting on the borderline between documentary, narrative fiction and the construction of a historical archive,

Also Known. As Jihadi. Eric Baudelaire

his work analyses the power of the image in a world oversaturated with images. Tabakalera has participated in the production of his latest work, Also Known As Jihadi (2017), which will be presented in the exhibition. It follows a young man’s journey from France to Syria, and back to France. The work employs the landscape theory called fukeiron, and draws on legal documents as narrative and editorial resources. Fukeiron originated in Japan and explores the political and poetic dimensions of landscape. This project is the result of the collaboration with Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam). Coinciding with the exhibition at Tabakalera, in September, the Centre Pompidou in Paris will present a special programme on Baudelaire’s latest work.

MALAS MADRES. LIVES HANGING BY A STRING

Jerรณnimo Hagerman

19:00 Square balcon

To bring greater vitality, from within, to the Tabakalera building, we have launched a series of artist interventions. From now on, we shall be taken across the length and breadth of the building through different eyes. Malas madres. Lives hanging by a string is the first intervention, proposed by Mexican artist Jerรณnimo Hagerman. From the Square of Tabakalera, toying with the balcony, we will discover a green cobweb made of plants, pots and ropes. Sponsor: Giroa-Veolia / Ondoan. Malas madres, Jerรณnimo Hagerman

MAÑANA GOODBYE. WOMEN WORKING TOGETHER Coordination: Marion Cruza, Pablo Marte. Storage

From February 2015 we are working with two artists, a group of former Tabakalera workers and a group of actresses on the project Mañana Goodbye. This is a 12-part series exploring the change in the production model by which the old tobacco factory became the current International Centre for Contemporary Culture. Lurking in the wings are two big questions: what do we need from the past when it comes to work and how and from where can one talk about memory?

RELATED ACTIVITIES Work process

ARE WE STILL WORKING TOGETHER?

Based on experiences shared during the Mañana Goodbye process, Are we still working together? is a space we have set up to bring together former and current Tabakalera workers. Every last Thursday of the month we meet to continue reflecting on Tabakalera's past and present. The aim of this process of collective knowledge construction is to generate a living, subjective, critical and collective archive. To this end, life experiences, memories, documents or stories that engage in dialogue with each other are collected and help to weave the history of this place by casting a reflective gaze upon it.

CARTES BLANCHES IKUSMIRA BERRIAK Ikusmira Berriak is a residence programme for the development of audio-visual projects organised by the San Sebastian Film Festival and Tabakalera, in collaboration with REC Estudio de grabación and the Basque Film Archive and is part of the legacy of Donostia / San Sebastian 2016 European Capital of Culture. Every year we select four projects which are worked upon, in terms of writing and development, by a group of international experts and film professionals, over six weeks, during August and September. The residents of this third edition have been invited to programme a film they consider crucial to their

career or that is in any way linked to the project they are developing. We want to know what images and stories have influenced their outlook and creative process. _CINEMA II INTERNATIONAL FILM SEMINAR 6 > 9 JULY (Thursday > Saturday) Registration required.

There are two points of departure for our second international film seminar: on the one hand, like last year, the Tabakalera summer exhibition is taken as reference, dedicated this time to French artist and filmmaker Eric Baudelaire. On the other, we have asked art curator Aily Nash to propose a series of films, filmmakers and contemporary artists whose work is in some way connected to Baudelaire’s work and concerns, and therefore allows us to reflect upon the historical, political and personal essence of image itself. For four days we shall share audiovisual material, texts, processes and films, as well as have debates, talks and exchanges on both sides of the screen, departing from one essential question:

The International Film Students Meeting (EIECINE) brings together, for five days, students from film schools all over the world. This meeting provides, on the one hand, the framework for an international short film contest, with works by students from international film schools. A jury, headed by a prestigious filmmaker and a group of students shall choose the film worthy of the Panavision Award. And a jury comprising students from Basque centres, coordinated by a professor from the Universidad de Mondragón, and directed by the Dirección de Desarrollo de Orona Fundazioa, shall award the Premio Orona to the most innovative short film of the Meeting.

A competition section open to the most unconventional film proposals of the year, for which there are no formal rules, or thematic limitations. A true open zone within the Festival programming.

THE WALL The Wall is a white space-cube of the Tabakalera building where for a month, via loop projection, international audio-visual artists are invited to present their works and in so doing bring this public screen to life. In July and August The Wall will be brought to life with works related to the Tabakalera audiovisual programme.

19 JULY (Wednesday)

Researcher Maite Garbayo Maeztu is developing throughout 2017 Mugak/Borders, a project within the framework of the second Artistic Research Residency launched jointly by Tabakalera and DSS2016EU. The aim of this call is to have research processes rest on projects in which society and civic responsibility are integrated with contemporary artistic practices.

MUGAK / BORDERS CHANTAL PEÑALOSA

Mugak/Borders aims to revisit the notion of border from (and with) artistic practices, writing practices and certain manifestations of visual and popular culture from border contexts, mainly, but not solely, from the Basque context.

Mugak / Borders - Chantal Peñalosa

Intervention

Chantal Peñalosa Workshop

Within the framework of the Mugak/ Borders project, Mexican artist Chantal Peñalosa explores the notion of limit as an element of everyday nature for those who, like her, live on the border. Peñalosa was born and lives in Tecate, a town on the most crossed border in the world, the one between Mexico and the United States. The artist proposes to transfer events of everyday life of that border to the Basque border, in order to rethink the notion of frontier, from different standpoints and points of view.

In territories where two languages obtain, it is normal for minority language writers to translate their own works, or do so in collaboration with someone else, not commissioning such a task to a translator. That also occurs here with the translation from Basque to the two other languages: the border is easily crossed. All these questions will be broached in this seminar, with people who have researched the notion of selftranslation, and with authors, male and female, who have translated their own works.

Social Dissonance is a score that contains instructions, created by artist Mattin, and performed by four musicians. It is part of an extensive concert that is taking place during the 163 days of DOCUMENTA 14, the quadrennial contemporary art exhibition to be held in Kassel and Athens. This concert, which places the emphasis more on the social than the strictly sonorous aspect of concertperforming, began on April 6 in Athens and will end on September 17 in Kassel. This performance is broadcasted via streaming through the Periscope application. A screen is installed on the 3rd floor of Tabakalera. This activity takes place within the framework of the Out of Sync (music and revolutions) programme.

Collaboration: CAPP (Collaborative Arts Partnership Programme) – hablarenarte.

How do the young people who hang around Tabakalera feel? What kind of relationship do they have with the interior of this building? How do they use it? What do they make of it? Departing from these questions, the Harrotu ileak project wishes to trigger a conversation with the young people who hang around Tabakalera, in order to reflect upon the use of the public spaces of the building and the type of co-habitation that develops among the users of Tabakalera. With this aim, this year we have proposed different actions such as: taking pictures and selfies that portray them in these spaces which later on have been part of a photographic exhibition, video workshops, Streetdance, rap music… We wish, from now on, to maintain that relationship and develop a programme designed in collaboration with young people. + more detailed information on the programme of activities are available on our web page.

Walks-workshops allow an introduction to Tabakalera. They are proactive sessions in which we seek the active participation of the group through different subjects

EXPLORING TABAKALERA! Workshop aimed at primary school groups.

A tour through different areas of the building goes into detail about the use and perception of the public space, as well as on the ways in which we operate and live in the everyday places. Through different dynamics and games, this workshop aims to transform the Tabakalera spaces to stimulate thinking about their collective use. PHOTO FAKE. WHAT DO IMAGES REALLY SAY? In relation with the exhibition entitled Eric Baudelaire. The music of Ramon Raquelo and his Orchestra. Aimed at Secondary School and Preuniversity High School students.

Today, we are constantly taking and seeing pictures. What truths do those images construct? In those photos we take, are there fictions with the appearance of truth? In the Eric Baudelaire exhibition, we shall talk about the power of the audiovisual. We shall then create narrative fictions through photographs and videos.

MAÑANA GOODBYE. WOMEN WORKING TOGETHER Workshop aimed at groups from associations and adults.

The workshop is inspired by Mañana Goodbye, an audiovisual installation in the Storage at Tabakalera. Using materials drawn from this project, we will conduct a series of dynamics and games that will lead us to reflect on notions such as work, memory and history. + info about Mañana Goodbye on p. 19.

ELKAR-EKIN. MID-TERM PROGRAMME Aimed at education centres and associations in the Donostialdea area. During the school year / Dates and times: To be defined with the person in charge of the group. Duration: 3-5 work sessions. (The duration of visits to Tabakalera will be 2 hours, while work in the classroom will be adapted to the scheduling needs of each group).

The mid-term programme Elkar- Ekin is designed and developed in collaboration between the mediation area of Tabakalera and school or any other group of the educational community. There is no specific topic or topics that has been closed in advance. We will be looking for a balance between the particular needs of the group and the Tabakalera cultural programme. 10:30 - 13:30 EU + ES / Age: +8 years old (+adults) Registration required. Ubik, Experimental screen

Summer gives us free time to enjoy being with the family. What if we made the most of it to create a camera obscura together? In this workshop, we shall experiment on how an image is made in a dark space, or camera. We shall darken a room at Ubik, using black cardboard. Once that space has been sealed off, we shall make a small hole in the plastic: magic! The exterior image will be seen, projected in reverse on the wall opposite the window! 18 > 21 JULY (Tuesday > Friday) Workshop

Intelligent cell-phones have changed our lives. We’ve always got them on us, but what would you say if, in addition to using their applications, you could also create them? Using App Inventor 2, and thanks to its easy, visual setting, you will be able to create mobile applications for Android without any special knowledge of programming. We shall learn to install and configure the App Inventor and we shall develop a few applications during the course, going at a pace suited to all.

10:30 - 13:30 EU + ES

What am I now going to do with my eyes? That is, effectively, the fundamental ethical question we ask ourselves after suffering or witnessing violence. From now on, how should we look, recall, or recount so that victims are recognized, violence is discredited and a horizon of co-habitation is forged? The aim of this thought workshop is to revisit the XX century through some of its most traumatic conflicts. To that end, we shall look at how the cinema has depicted these conflicts.

Through such a proposal, we shall work on body conscience and the creative process. We shall undertake a journey from the individual to the group. We shall give form to what is carried out via dance through plastic arts, and to complete our initiative we shall share through words what has been experienced.

Fancy being a volume craftsman? To put it one way, miniature models are a way of rendering in object form the reality around us. Carefully choose the size, the right materials and‌turn up the volume on reality!

11:30 - 13:00 EU / Age: 8-12 years old Registration required. Ubik

Cellars, basements and garages are usually dark places for keeping things. They store what we don’t use, and, like a warehouse, also house traces of our lives. The basement can also bear a direct relation to creation and invention, since it can be a meeting point for many young people, a place to be, to do things, to converse, create. That’s what Gazte xaia will be: a corner where we will allow progress and development, ideas and problems, inventions and unlikely things, to meet. Through teamwork, we shall develop the imagination, forge creation, foster critical thought.
