Quante declinazioni può conoscere l’arte? Tra le infinite sfumature con cui l’artista plasma la propria visione del mondo abbiamo cercato d’indagare le vie per cui si snodano le suggestioni dei nostri cinque scultori.

Cinque. Un numero non certo casuale. Un numero simbolicamente evocativo che fin dai tempi antichi è associato all’atto di sperimentare, alla conoscenza concreta dei fatti, del cambiamento, del “mutamento di stato” di una situazione.

Gli antichi greci lo riconducevano a Hermes, messaggero degli dei, tramite tra cielo e terra. Cinque sono anche i sensi che fanno da bussola per l’essere umano nella sua esistenza: da un punto di vista emotivo, mentale e fisico, ad una condizione sempre nuova.

Il numero cinque è simbolo di una mente polimorfa, costantemente votata all’intelligenza e alla curiosità, porta con sé la tendenza ad avvicinarsi, a volte anche in modo pericoloso, a linee di confine, di trasgressione.

How many declinations does art knows? Among all possible nuances employed by an artist in order to shape a vision of a new world, we have tried to analyse the ways where are running the perceptions of our five sculptors.

Five artists: is not an number like the others. It is a highly symbolic and evocative number which, since ancient times, is associated with experimenting, with the concrete knowledge of facts, with transformation, with the “changing aspects” of a situation.

The ancient Greeks associated this number with Hermes, the messenger of the Gods, the connection between sky and earth.

Five are also the human senses which serve as a compass to the human being through all the life: from an emotional, mental and physical point of view to an ever-changing condition.

Number five is the symbol for a polymorphic mind, which is constantly devoted to intelligence and curiosity and has the tendency to reach extreme limits and transgressive boundaries, sometimes in dangerous ways.

Il Numero Cinque è legato alla quinta lettera dell’alfabeto ebraico : Hey ( ‫) ה‬, che significa intuizione, illuminazione. I cabalisti, individuano tre stadi per la lettera Hey, i quali si pongono su tre livelli diversi, successivi, in merito allo sviluppo della consapevolezza dell’essere umano nell’arco di tutta la sua esistenza.

Il mistero della nascita, la totale inconsapevolezza con cui l’essere umano è “gettato” in questo mondo, viene qui superata dall’entusiasmo nello scoprire quanto di bello e fertile è presente nel mondo che lo circonda. Arriviamo, qui, a intuire quella misteriosa potenza all’interno della nostra esistenza che ci sospinge al di là della contingenza.

Ma non dimentichiamo che questo numero conserva in sé la forza dell’auto - espressione. E Infatti, le componenti fisiche corrispondenti alla capacità di parlare, sono esattamente cinque: lingua, denti, palato, labbra e gola.

Proprio per la complessa interazione tra intelletto e parola, il cinque suggerisce di utilizzare ogni tipo di disciplina interiore ed esteriore, al fine di “traghettare” la nostra personalità, da uno stato di disagio, di ricerca di un aliquid, allo stato desiderato.

Solo governando bene la comunicazione, l’espressione di idee, sentimenti e fatti, è possibile giungere a uno scambio equilibrato e quindi crescere.

Una simbologia tanto intensa che trova le sue diverse impressioni nelle opere di questi cinque scultori. Armonia e contrasto, ricerca e sublimazione si fondono nelle loro opere.

La scultura riunisce in se il concreto tentativo di plasmare il mondo che ci circonda e allo stesso tempo di infondere ad esso le suggestioni che s’imprimono con maggiore forza nell’animo umano. Un’interpretazione di cui l’artista si trasforma in un medium privilegiato.

La scultura nella mostra tenutasi presso officinacento5 si rivela un tentativo di plasmare il mondo che ci circonda con un’ acuta analisi dei propri sensi e una declinazione fatta di suggestioni che si concretizza in cinque diverse anime d’artista.

Number five is associated with the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet: “Hey” ( ‫) ה‬, which means intuition and illumination.

The Kabbalists identify three stages in the letter “Hey”, based on three different, subsequent levels, regarding the development of human awareness throughout one’s life.

The mystery of birth and the complete unawareness in which the human being is “flung” into this world, are overcome by the enthusiastic discovery of the beauty and richness existing in the world around us. We thus succeed in understanding that mysterious power within our lives which drives us beyond existing reality.

We should not forget that this number withholds the power of self-expression. In fact, the physical components corresponding to our ability to speak are exactly five: tongue, teeth, palate, lips and throat.

Indeed, the complex interaction between the intellect and word is precisely what allows the number five to indicate the usage of every kind of inner and external discipline in order to shift our personality from a state of uneasiness and a search for an “aliquid” to a desired condition.

Only by mastering communication, the formulation of ideas and feelings together with the expression of facts, can a balanced exchange and personal development be achieved.

Such intense symbology is to be found in the various forms of the works presented by these five sculptors. Harmony and contrast, research and sublimation merge in their works.

Sculpture represents the concrete attempt to shape the world around us and, at the same time, to infuse it with perceptions, which impress the human soul in the most powerful way. By offering their personal interpretation and their acute analysis of their own senses, each of the five artists is transformed into a “privileged medium”.

Mieke VAN DEN HOOGEN Her professional training began at the Hogeschool in Maastricht in 1987 which she completed in 1991.

From February 1992 she founded her own studio, first in Elsloo, and after in Nijmegen where she moved in 1997.

La sua formazione professionale inizia presso la Hogeschool Maastricht nel 1987 che completa nel 1991.

Dal febbraio 1992 fonda il suo studio, prima a Elsloo, ora a Nimega dove si traferisce nel 1997.

“Le immagini delle donne svolgono un ruolo importante nel mio lavoro. In queste immagini cerco una combinazione di elementi naturalistici, forme astratte ed emozioni.

Non sono affascinata dal corpo della donna in sé in quanto rappresenta un ideale di bellezza, ma come una rappresentazione corporea, un corpo in cui vivono le persone, le cui emozioni possono essere lette attraverso le forme.

Pensiamo ai nostri corpi: sembrano essere costruiti simmetricamente, ma interiormente noi sperimentiamo la differenza e l’asimmetria.

Per questo io lavoro la materia per esprimerlo costruendo un'immagine asimmetrica. Poiché queste immagini sono in ceramica, quindi vuote, il contenuto deve essere espresso nel frammento.

In questo frammento rappresento il sé interiore con tutta la sua fragilità e impalpabilità”.

“Images of women play an important role in my work - she says- In these images I look for a combination of naturalistic elements, abstract forms and emotions.

I am not fascinated by the body of the woman itself as it represents an ideal of beauty, but as a body representation, a body in which people live, whose emotions can be read through the forms.

We think about our bodies: they seem to be built symmetrically, but inwardly we experience difference and asymmetry.

This is why I work the matter in order to express it by constructing an asymmetrical image. Since these images are ceramic, therefore empty, the content must be expressed in the fragment.

In that fragment I represent the inner self with all its fragility and impalpability”.

As Flaubert wrote: “If there is something to worship on Earth and between all things dominated by the Vacuum, if there is something holy, pure, sublime, something that should be able to support this enormous desire for Infinity and vagueness, it could be called soul, then this is art “.

Fare l’arte, crearla, plasmandola con le proprie mani, darvi forma e animarla di un senso che possa convogliare in sé tutta la complessità di quel labirinto interiore in cui la nostra anima si confonde. Questo è il dialogo che Mieke Van den Hoogen instaura con la materia.

In queste immagini, Mieke cerca una combinazione di elementi naturalistici, forme astratte ed emozioni. Non è un semplice corpo, ma è la rappresentazione di un corpo, un corpo che viene vissuto, che può essere letto emozioni nell'immagine.

Importante è il messaggio che queste sculture lasciano trapelare con tutta la loro charme. E se ogni opera d’arte è un artefatto lo è nel suo senso più vero e completo nelle opere di Mieke Van den Hoogen in cui si realizza attivamente il concetto di Arte-Facere.

Tutta la fragilità della condizione umana, con particolare attenzione a quella femminile, è espressa nel ciclo dei volti e dei busti di donna. Essi rappresentano le continue asimmetrie interiori che attraversano l’animo di noi donne, fonte di riflessione costante e mai esauribile.

Le opere di Mieke trovano il loro archetipo nella femminilità.

Following his studies at the Hogeschool, she focused her study of the subject on ceramics and the possibilities of expression of the fragment.

The study of thefragment in monumental objects continues alongside teachers such as Desiré Tonnaer (Maastricht) and Piet Hermans (Venray).

A sculpture where we are looking for a combination of naturalistic elements, abstract shapes and emotions. It is a representation of a body, but not an ordinary one: a body that is able to express emotions in the interrupted images.

Van den Hoogen models with clay sculptures where bodies and faces that reveal with charm all the secret between matter and soul. If every work of art is an artefact it is in its most true and complete sense in the works of Mieke Van den Hoogen where she actively realizes the concept of Ars-facere.

All the fragility of the human condition, with particular attention to the female one, is expressed in the cycle of faces and busts of a woman. They represent the continuous inner asymmetries into the soul of humans beings, especially women, a source of constant and never exhaustive reflection.

Mieke’s works find their archetype of femininity.

Femininity that transcends the ideals of classical composure to become an authentic experience of inner life.

Olivier BERTRAND Olivier Bertrand è nato nel 1975 a Marsiglia, da padre francese e madre asiatica. Fin dalla tenera età, si appassiona al disegno, alle arti plastiche e in particolare agli origami.

“Sono sempre stato affascinato dalla metamorfosi del semplice foglio di carta, che in alcune curve apprese, prende vita e suscita emozione”.

Assemblando pezzi di cartone tra loro, riesce a realizzare animali fantasmagorici nelle loro dimensioni naturali.

“Il cartone offre molti vantaggi, è facile da ottenere ed è un materiale leggero che ti permette di fare creare opere di grande formato... Mi piace l’idea di creare arte da un prodotto della vita quotidiana, che le persone scartano, e di restituirgli una nuova vita.

Scolpendo animali di cartone, mi sento completamente in sintonia con il mio tema preferito, l’ambiente. Mi piace scegliere animali con una certa imponenza fisica che, a prima vista, risulta antinomico con la fragilità del cartone che uso. Con questa dualità tra soggetto e soggetto, cerco, a modo mio, di mettere in guardia sulla precarietà delle specie animali “.

Olivier Bertrand ha ricevuto il rinomato riconoscimento dell’ Association des Artistes Français nel corso di Art Capital 2019, presso il Grand Palais di Parigi, dove il suo Gorilla è stato fra le opere più ammirate di tutta la kermesse.

Olivier Bertrand was born in 1975 in Marseille, from a French father and Asian mother. Since his early childhood, he became passionate about drawing, plastic arts and, in particular, with the origamis.

By assembling bits of cardboard together, nowadays he creates extraordinary and amazing life-sized animals.

Olivier Bertrand received the renowned recognition of the “Association des Artistes Français” of Art Capital 2019, at the Grand Palais in Paris, where his Gorilla was among the most admired sculptures of the whole art fair.

La sua è una capacità tanto preziosa e rara da risaltare in modo preponderante ai nostri occhi di uomini e donne del ventunesimo secolo.

Olivier possesses such a precious and rare ability that it stands out in a predominant way to the eyes of men and women of the XXIth century: he knows how to create value from what our society, spasmodically consumerist, throws away. He succeeds in using, what is considered as waste and destined for oblivion to create such a powerful and direct message.

Siamo stati travolti, soprattutto nell’ultimo secolo e mezzo dalle gioie e dai dolori della globalizzazione, siamo stati persuasi, in un crescente delirio di onnipotenza, di essere noi i padroni del mondo, di poterlo plasmare a nostro piacimento, di piegarne leggi sempiterne al nostro capriccioso desiderio del “qui e ora”. Abbiamo reciso un legame fondamentale, quello che per millenni ha garantito la nostra sopravvivenza sul pianeta terra. Abbiamo dimenticato, in un’eternità fatta del susseguirsi senza tregua, di ere geologiche, di non essere altro che un rapido giro per le lancette dell’orologio del Pianeta Terra. Potremmo dire che abbiamo dimenticato, non tanto “chi siamo” ma, “perché siamo”.

Especially in the last years, humanity has been overwhelmed by the joys and sorrows of globalization. We have been persuaded, in a growing delirium of omnipotence, to be the masters of the world and to be able to shape it as we prefer, to bend everlasting laws to our whimsical desire for “here and now”.

We have broken a fundamental bond: the same that, for thousands of years, has guaranteed our survival on the planet earth.

Perhaps, we have failed to remember, in an Eternity made of an endless succession of geological eras, that the humans beings are nothing more than a quick turn of hands around the of the Earth’s clock. We could say that we have forgotten, not so much “WHO we are” but, “WHY we are”.

Olivier Bertrand tries to take up the thread of an interrupted speech with our planet. In order to do so he uses a waste material, the cardboard, removes it from its destiny of recyclable waste and transforms such a raw element in a medium for his Art. Magnificent animals come to life thanks to the cardboard sculptures: proud and majestic animals but also with an almost certain future of extinction.

Art conveys an immortal appearance and makes a new light to the idea, the message of the artist that appear to us, finally, adamantine.

Taking care of Mother Earth, becoming her guardians, starts by rediscovering treasures even where our eyes are not trained to looking for. That is the new way to follow.

Ora Bertrand cerca di riprendere il filo di un discorso interrotto e per farlo utilizza un materiale di scarto, il cartone, lo sottrae dal suo destino di rifiuto riciclabile e ne fa materia prima per la sua arte. Fragile e alterabile, proprio come i maestosi animali che dalle sue sculture di cartone prendono vita: fieri e maestosi ma con un futuro di estinzione quasi certo. L’arte rende immortale la forma ma, ancora di più rende adamantina l’idea, il messaggio di quest’artista. Avere cura del nostro mondo, esserne i custodi, parte dal riscoprire il prezioso anche laddove il nostro occhio non è allenato a cercare. Così, nell’evidenza delle cose, così come in noi stessi e nel modo in cui dialoghiamo con il nostro pianeta, troviamo il nuovo modo di proseguire il nostro viaggio. ©

Karen TREVISANI Nata in Colombia, Karen Trevisani, dopo aver vissuto a Chicago e New York, vive a Parigi dal 2000.

Born in Colombia, Karen Trevisani, after a long period in Chicago and New York, lives in Paris since 2000.

Graphic designer di formazione, ha lavorato prima nella pubblicità e poi si è dedicata esclusivamente alla scultura astratta.

First, trained as graphic designer, she worked first in advertising and then she dedicated herself exclusively to abstract sculptures.

Concepisce il suo lavoro come una ricerca sulla decostruzione dei volumi, sulla frammentazione della materia e sul dialogo tra fissità e mobilità.

Allo spettatore è concessa la piena libertà di appropriarsi delle sue opere, disporne in base a come si sente a rispondere alle domande che queste ispirano in lui.

She conceives her work as a research on the deconstruction of volumes, on the fragmentation of matter and on the dialogue between fixity and mobility.

When we find ourselves admiring Karen Trevisani’s sculpture, we are allowed the full freedom to take possession of her works, to dispose of them based on how she feels about answering the questions they inspire in us.

Da una parte c’è la catarsi della materia che prima nella mente dell’artista poi, plasmata dalle sue mani sapienti, accetta di abbandonare il sicuro rifugio di forme e volume convenzionali per mostrarsi nella sua purezza ideale: il potere sconvolgente di essere tutto e niente in un solo istante.

On the one hand there is the catharsis of matter. From the artist’s mind finally shaped by her skilled hands. The matter accepts to abandon the safe haven of conventional forms and volume and shows itself in its ideal purity: the shocking power of be nothing and everything at the same time.

Con amorevole fiducia verso e la sicurezza di chi conosce ormai ogni segreto della materia con cui dialoga, Karen decostruisce le forme e dona allo spettatore una straordinaria libertà: la scultura, nella sua primitiva bellezza, ci affascina, irresistibilmente siamo portati ad accettare la sfida di lottare contro le forme e i preconcetti che usualmente permeano la nostra concezione di opera d’arte e scultura.

Sperimentiamo, la nostra mente gioca con le forme che Karen ci offre, il nostro animo inizia a diventare malleabile e le barriere si sciolgono. Possiamo sentire in noi fluire la nuova consapevolezza di condividere con queste sculture una medesima dimensione. Non più solidamente definita, non più certezza precostituita ma nuova consapevolezza di essere presenti a noi stessi e al mondo attraverso l’arte.

With the loving confidence and certainty of those who know every secret of their interlocutor, Karen de-constructs the forms and gives us an extraordinary freedom. Sculpture, in its primitive beauty, fascinates us: we are irresistibly inclined to accept the challenge of fighting against forms and preconceptions about sculpture.

Our mind plays with the new forms of matter that Karen offers us, our soul starts to become malleable, all barriers melt. We can feel in us the new awareness of sharing the same dimension with these sculptures.

It is a new awareness of being present to ourselves and to the world through art, no longer solidly defined, no longer as a pre-established certainty.

La stabilità e l’immobilità sono la certezza di un nuovo mondo che si schiude alla nostra sensibilità estetica. Monolitica certezza che racchiude in sé il segreto del continuo divenire.

Carlo PAZZAGLIA Scrive di sè Carlo: Sono nato nel Gennaio del 1952. Ho studiato alla Facoltà di Architettura di Venezia. Ho fatto molte esperienze lavorative; l’ultima di queste è stata lo scalpellino. L’incontro con la pietra ha riacceso il mio interesse per l’arte ed in particolare per la scultura. Con il tempo, dalla lavorazione della pietra sono passato al ferro.

Ho sempre perseguito la semplicità e la sintesi. All’inizio la mia ricerca era improntata sull’aspetto formale, poi sono passato alla narrazione; al centro del mio interesse c’è l’uomo con tutte le sue vicende.

Racconto la vita, la morte, la sofferenza, il disagio esistenziale, l’amicizia, la bellezza del corpo femminile, l’attesa della maternità, l’ipocrisia, ecc..

Nel fare ciò, cerco di rispettare l’insegnamento del grande giornalista Ettore Mo, quando parlava di “castità verbale”. Spero di riuscirci sempre.

Carlo says about his life: “I was born in January 1952.

I studied at the Faculty of Architecture in Venice. I had many work experiences; the last of these was working as a stonemason.

The encounter with stone rekindled my interest in art and, in particular, in sculpture. Over the time, from the stone processing I switched to iron.

I have always pursued simplicity and synthesis. At the beginning my research was based on the formal aspect, then I switched to narration; at the centre of my interest is the man with all his stories.

In my sculptures I tell about life, death, suffering, existential unease, friendship, the beauty of the female body, the expectation of motherhood, hypocrisy, etc.

In doing so, I try to respect the teaching of the great journalist Ettore Mo, when he spoke of “verbal chastity. I hope to always succeed”.
