A visit to Sri Lanka and its beautiful coast reveals both ancient traditions and modern escapes. THE HIGHLY VISUAL AND CHALLENGING ART OF STILT FISHING IN SRI LANKA, as framed here, is a revered tradition. Famous photographers have traveled to this enchanting stretch of coastline to document the determined fishermen—who patiently wait atop logs and sticks to lure a school of fish in shallow water. Though this generational practice is in jeopardy of becoming extinct in today’s modernized world, visitors can step back in time while visiting the swath of sea between Unawatuna and Weligama. A journey to Sri Lanka also reveals surf and sand along the Boho beach town of Hiriketiya, in addition to such cultural surprises as the stunning art that lines Colombo’s streets. Travel southwest to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle Fort and discover an 18th-century Dutch walled town with stylish shops, charming colonial houses, and gorgeous beaches. And with the high-end Shangri-La in Colombo and the Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa in the Southern Province, there’s no shortage of romantic hideaways.

Ultimate Experiences April 2020

Snorkeling off the beautiful coast of Abaco Island, Bahamas.

Global POV WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, my Texan grandmother was an avid traveler. Stacks of travel magazines lined the shelves of her living room and I’d spend hours devouring the pages, learning about African wildlife or a far-flung community in South America. She passed away in 2006, but I still think about her every day. She had the softest hands of anyone I’ve known. I imagine them wrapped around the railing of a cruise ship in the Mediterranean, or gently unfolding a dog-eared guidebook while discovering Alaska. I see them unpacking her suitcase during a glamorous trip to Paris. When I visited her as a child, she’d place her hand over mine and trace my tiny pointer finger along a framed world map on her bedroom wall, telling me of the many places I’d someday see. We all have mentors that inspire us to get out and see the world. With this edition of Ultimate Experiences, we strive to capture the unique and the unusual, and we hope you continually dream big, like my grandmother taught me. Where will your wish list take you next? ENJOY THE ISSUE!

BUCKET LIST TRIP: A summertime roadtrip with my husband and son through France and Italy. We’d follow a bit of the Tour de France, eat our weight in cheese and pasta, and get lost in the seaside villages of Cinque Terre. CURRENT OBSESSION: Any and all of the Aman Resort properties. They’re opening a new one in New York City this year with a three-story spa, and Amangiri in Southern Utah is built into the desert canyons.

ON MY SUMMER RADAR: Copenhagen. It seems so utopic to me with its clean harbors, sustainable initiatives, and incredible food scene. .

ON MY SUMMER RADAR: I want to go to the Caribbean on my annual pilgrimage and do some of my favorite things: swim, kayak, sleep, read books, and catch up with friends on the beach. TOP HIGHLIGHT OF MY TRIP TO BRAZIL: Visiting the Sítio Roberto Burle Marx west of Rio, the home and gardens of the greatest landscape architect ever.

THE SUITE LIFE

Tropic Wonder Fontainebleau’s glamorous reputation precedes itself—but pay a visit to the Miami icon, and you’ll find, after 66 years, it still lives up to the hype.

THE SUITE LIFE

Opposite: Lapis Spa at Fontainebleau Miami. From top: Creative poolscapes celebrate sand and sea; rooms frame Miami’s serene side.

A MiMo Legend

You don’t have to be an architecture buff to recognize the chic Neo-Baroque of Miami Modern, a movement led by Morris Lapidus during the 1950s and ‘60s—and the best example of the trademark style can still be found at Fontainebleau. Those minimalist lines. Those sleek white walls. Those sexy curves. It was all about fun and glamour, two things Miami—and Fontainebleau—excels at. Today, the hotel isn’t just an architectural landmark on Collins Avenue, it’s a modern chateau that can hold its own among ritzy Millionaire’s Row’s ever-growing hotel scene. Its pedigree stretches for decades: Built on the estate of tire magnate Harvey Firestone in 1954, it’s a luxury retreat for the ages, home to big names and impressive connections at every turn, from restaurants by Michelin darlings such as Michael Mina and Hakkasan to artworks by the likes of James Turrell and Ai Weiwei—not to mention famous patrons from Heidi Klum to Leonardo DiCaprio.

All of Miami in One Place

Miami’s hotels are destinations in their own right, featuring world-class restaurants, nightclubs, and more to lure travelers for a visit, whether they’re staying the night or not. And the city’s crème de la crème—whether you’re looking for an incredible meal or a night to remember—can all be found at Fontainebleau. Check in and you’ll find few excuses to leave: All of the hot MIA scene is right there at the hotel. In the lobby, find the neon Bleau Bar, a lively gathering place both day and night; the massive pool complex is one of the most action-packed, seeand-be-seen party spots in town; and upstairs, LIV is the hottest nightclub in all of Miami, playing host to the biggest DJ talent around. To see it all in one night, you’d better have a jampacked itinerary. Start with a cocktail at Bleau Bar, then take your pick between dim sum at Hakkasan or

a prime beef filet at StripSteak. The best way to get into LIV? Go for bottle service, of course. And if all that partying has your stomach grumbling at 2 a.m., not to worry: Michael Mina’s Pizza & Burger is open late with a menu full of hangover-busting plates.

R&R in MIA

Glitz and glam aside, there’s plenty of Zen to be found at Fontainebleau, too. The Lapis Spa has been called the “most beautiful spa in America” by those who know, and you’ll agree the minute you step into the marble-clad space. Pulsating Miami is but a distant memory here, especially when you’re indulging in an Ayurvedic ritual or a transporting hammam bath. Meanwhile, the bright and breezy rooms are little oases of their own thanks to oversized marble bathrooms, rainfall showers, and soothing views of the brilliant blue Atlantic for miles. Book a specialty suite for the ultimate Miami escape. With a sprawling private terrace overlooking the whole of the city and the beach, you’ll feel a million miles away and right in the middle of it all.

All’s an Isle

InterContinental’s collection of French Polynesian resorts offers one-of-a-kind experiences in four fabulous properties. YOU’D BE FORGIVEN FOR THINKING THAT ALL FRENCH POLYNESIAN RESORTS WERE THE SAME. After all, each of those overwater bungalows and palm-lined beaches looks as dreamy as the last. But travel with InterContinental—which boasts properties across the South Pacific territory’s most sought-after islands— and you’ll find something special at each stop along the way. Here’s how to see paradise with four different stays.

12

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

For the Overwater Obsessed: INTERCONTINENTAL TAHITI RESORT & SPA The overwater bungalow was born in Tahiti—and the best of the island’s floating fantasies can be found at this resort set along 32 acres of stunning gardens on the edge of a lagoon. Of the 245 rooms, 32 suites hover above the crystalline water, modeled after traditional Polynesian fare houses with added luxuries like spacious lounges and private terraces primed for perfect sunset views. If you can pry yourself away from your water-bound haven, experience dinner at Le Lotus, another overwater building that excels at French cuisine and romance. There’s also a tiki bar, where fruity cocktails are served in coconuts, and at the Tiare Restaurant, a nightly Polynesian dance performance complements elevated Tahitian dishes.

ROOM KEY

Opposite: A birds’-eye view of the InterContinental Bora Bora. From top left: Thalasso Spa’s Brando Suite in Bora Bora; Le Moana Bora Bora Junior Suite Bungalow; the view from InterContinental Tahiti.

For the Castaway:

INTERCONTINENTAL MOOREA RESORT & SPA Set in the shadows of Moorea’s magnificent green mountains, on the edge of a crystalline lagoon that’s home to dolphins and sea turtles, this tropical resort is a jungle utopia set on 17 lush acres. A Robinson Crusoe vibe finds its way into every experience, from the thatched-roof bungalows that blur the line between the verdant outdoors and the bambooand-mahogany indoors, to the rusticchic spa—where signature therapies use local vanilla, wild miri (a tropical basil), and fresh coconut—surrounded by wild rainforest. Commune further with nature at the resort’s dolphin and sea turtle rehabilitation center, where you can glimpse local wildlife rescued by marine specialists.

For the Beach Bum:

INTERCONTINENTAL BORA BORA LE MOANA RESORT Claiming a coveted place along the famed Matira Beach, this intimate retreat on the main island of Bora Bora was made for landlubbers with a penchant for powderfine sand. The 62-room property is about as authentically Polynesian as it gets, with bamboo architecture, thatched-roof bungalows, and palm trees as far as the

eye can see. You’ll want to waste no time indoors when you have this heavenly slice of sand just outside. Luckily, you can do almost everything that’s worth doing right on the beach, from relaxing with a massage to sitting down to a romantic dinner.

For the Elite Traveler:

INTERCONTINENTAL BORA BORA RESORT & THALASSO SPA This luxurious resort located on its own private motu (reef islet) has sybarites flocking as much for its incredible Brando Suites as its thalassotherapy spa. The former, a collection of four two-bedroom overwater villas, are some of Bora Bora’s most impressive accommodations, with each boasting 3,229 square feet of indooroutdoor living space—not

to mention the largest private pools in all of French Polynesia. The latter, meanwhile, is a destination unto itself, making rejuvenating use of seawater in every treatment, from the Deep-Sea Hydro Massage Bath—a therapeutic soak in deep-sea water that leaves the muscles and skin oxygenated—to the Relaxing Pearl Rain Massage, which combines the effects of soothing touch with a fine mist of warm water.

TRIED &KEY ROOM TRENDING

Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection Hawaii’s Mauna Lani has been a Big Island mainstay for decades, but thanks to the esteemed Auberge Resorts Collection, the 333-room property is shining like a well-polished penny after an extensive renovation. There’s plenty new to explore (top priority: three brand new pools) but perhaps most impressive is the beach, a golden slice of heaven that, thankfully, hasn’t changed much over the last 30 years. SUITE GPS: You still have plenty of options for highclass Hawaiian living in any of the guest rooms. All of them feature that classic Auberge look—breezy with light woods punctuated by cheerful pops of color—and the bungalows have the extra bonus of private swimming pools and personal spas.

SEA and SCENE

You can have it all—sun and sand, culture and cuisine—when you factor these two exquisite hotels into your 2020 travel plans. CAN’T DECIDE BETWEEN A CITY SOJOURN AND A BEACH RETREAT? Neither can we—and we don’t mind at all. The beauty of travel, of course, is that you really can have the best of both worlds: A cosmopolitan getaway in one of the world’s biggest—and most vibrant—metropolises (did we mention margaritas?), plus a quintessential island escape where your every whim, whether it’s whale watching or beachside yoga, is at your fingertips. Make sure these two singular escapes are on your must-see list this year.

14

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

DISCOVER: The entire Big Island is outside your room at Mauna Lani, whether you want to get closer to the kainalu (ocean wave) with surfing, snorkeling, and stand-up paddle boarding or find your piko (peace) at the spa with a lomi lomi healing massage using Hawaiian ti leaves and ancient techniques. EAT: Organic, locally sourced cuisine rules the day at the four restaurants. Dine on fresh oysters, crab legs, and Kona lobster at CanoeHouse; get a dose of Mediterranean flavors at the poolside HāLani; kick back with toes in the sand at the casual Surf Shack; or watch the sun go down with a tiki cocktail in hand at Hā Bar.

The St. Regis Mexico City Mexico City has come a long way. Once a city mainly for businessmen (who would only travel with a large security detail), today the CDMX, as the capital is known among locals, is as chic as it is safe. You can catch the best of it all right in the heart of the city, on the idyllic Paseo de la Reforma, where this 31-story hotel rises like a beacon of mirrors. SUITE GPS: Each of the 189 rooms are spacious and contemporary, with that quintessentially sophisticated St. Regis touch. Green marble bathrooms,

plush velvet furnishings, and butler service? You might forget where you were—Paris? New York?—if it weren’t for the panoramic views of the city through your floor-to-ceiling windows. DISCOVER: No trip to any St. Regis would be complete with a visit to the King Cole Bar—especially in Mexico City, where the well-heeled watering hole (named after the original in New York City) goes extra-local with drinks like the Sangrita María, a mezcal-andchili twist on the Bloody Mary.

EAT: Come hungry. With seven dining options and incredible chefs behind the restaurants here—including French Michelin master Jean-Georges Vongerichten—you’ll be spoiled for choice. The only solution is to try them all, from the contemporary Mexican flavors at the alfresco Restaurant Diana to the over-the-top Champagne tasting menu at the Chef’s Table by Krug. Elevated Escapes. SITES TO BEHOLD UNESCO dreams take flight with TCS World Travel’s private jet journeys. BY JACKIE CARADONIO

16

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

THE UNESCO BUCKET LIST IS DAUNTING— THE WORLDWIDE AGENCY EARMARKS MORE THAN 11,000 SITES AROUND THE GLOBE AS HISTORICALLY, CULTURALLY, OR SCIENTIFICALLY SIGNIFICANT TO HUMANITY. Though it’s probably impossible to see them all in a lifetime, TCS World Travel’s private-jet journeys tick off some of the most extraordinary sites in one fell swoop, thanks to multi-continent itineraries featuring direct routes to the farthest corners of the world. Here, we jet off on two of TCS’s most over-the-top 2020 journeys. AROUND THE WORLD The Itinerary: TCS’s flagship journey is the one that started it all, wowing travelers with incredible continent-hopping adventures and touching down on some of the world’s most sought-after destinations since first launching in 1991. The Details: It’s wheels up on October 24, 2020, for this 24-night sojourn starting in Orlando, Florida. From there, it’s due south to Peru and Easter Island, then off to the Far East with stops in the South Pacific and Southeast Asia. Australia, Tanzania, Morocco, and Jordan are also on the route. The UNESCO Factor: Get ready to see the biggest names in UNESCO World Heritage sites. Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, and the massive moai of Easter Island are all among the nine designated stops along the way. You’ll also count two sites in Jordan (the Lost City of Petra and the otherworldly desert of Wadi Rum), the Great Barrier Reef, Serengeti National Park, and Australia’s Daintree Rainforest. It all ends with a visit to one of UNESCO’s most colorful cultural destinations: the medina of Marrakech, where the maze of merchant stalls filled with snake charmers, musicians, and entertainers will sweep you away one last time.

A Personal UNESCO Site Itinerary For the history buff on a mission, TCS World Travel offers the extraordinary opportunity to create an entirely bespoke itinerary to the UNESCO World Heritage sites of your choice with the company’s Luxury Custom Travel team. Available on firstclass commercial or chartered private jet, these journeys afford discerning travelers all the same luxuries as a scheduled itinerary, plus the flexibility of a totally one-of-a-kind route. Want to see the Great Migration in Kenya, take a hot-air balloon ride in Cappadocia, then stand on the edge of the world’s largest waterfall in Argentina? Not a problem. While you’re at it, add a few more UNESCO must-sees, like Old Havana and Machu Picchu.

Opposite: The iconinc Taj Mahal in India. From top: Wake-up calls in Africa include ballooning over the bush; uncovering history in Petra, Jordan.

EPIC KINGDOMS BY PRIVATE JET The Itinerary: For the UNESCO connoisseur, this elevated journey hopscotches across Europe, Africa, and Asia to drop in on lesser known (but no less significant) sites in remote destinations that few will have the chance to see in their lifetime. The Details: This high-flying adventure aboard TCS’s reconfigured all-first-class Boeing 757 is indeed epic, packing seven exotic stops into 19 days. Hosted by travel writer and National Geographic alum Andrew Evans, the journey begins in historic Athens, then heads east to India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Thailand. It then circles back to Africa for adventures in Ethiopia and Egypt before returning to Europe. The UNESCO Factor: No doubt, you’ll be the first among your friends to see these hard-to-reach UNESCO World Heritage destinations. In Jaipur, the Pink City’s rosy walls are a vibrant backdrop for the city’s legendary culture, cuisine, and royal architecture; in Kathmandu, it’s a treasure hunt of sites, with seven UNESCO locales to see, including Durbar Square and the Monkey Temple. Other highlights include Cairo’s pyramids, Ethiopia’s 900-yearold carved mountain-side churches, and Sicily’s magnificent Mt. Etna.

JOY MARTINELLO, ABERCROMBIE & KENT PRODUCT MANAGER, EXPEDITION CRUISING What does adventure mean to you? Adventure means traveling into the unknown to experience something so unusual you can’t possibly imagine it ahead of time. It also means experiences that bring you fully into the present moment, like witnessing the earth’s powerful and majestic beauty or encountering people and cultures so vastly different from yours yet so similar at heart that your world view changes. How does A&K help guests feel like adventurers? At the heart of A&K expedition travel is the commitment to offer guests the

most inspiring experiences possible. In the care of our award-winning expedition team of highly accomplished explorers and experts, our guests venture to locations only accessible by ship. How would you describe the landscapes of Greenland and Iceland? Because these places are so close together, you might be tempted to think they’re similar, yet in reality they’re quite different. I was completely surprised by the vast, dramatic landscapes I encountered in Greenland. Ice swirled across massive mountains in patterns I had never seen before. Iceland is also spectacular yet with a very different flavor. Formed and altered by volcanoes, it’s a hot spot for geological activity and this volatility is reflected in dramatic landscapes that are literally different at every curve of a road. The Arctic is such a fragile region. Why is it important to experience it firsthand? A&K is passionate about doing everything it can to support and protect this very fragile region. When guests travel with A&K to the Arctic, they will return home with a comprehensive climate change education as well as memories of breathtaking vistas, cultural insights, and wildlife encounters that will last a lifetime. And these memories just might influence the choices they make when they return home.

As one of the Lesser Antilles in the Southern Caribbean Sea, Aruba is brimming with potential—the scent of the ocean, the entice of sea-tofork cuisine, and a serene vibe that calls for plenty of down time, too. A not-to-miss excursion is a day trip to Oranjestad. Fuel up for the day at the Dutch Pancake House, as your destination is Flamingo Beach, located on Renaissance Island. Accessed via a quick, 10-minute boat ride, you’ll arrive at a dock lined with oversized mangroves only to feel perfectly removed from the real world as you encounter and photograph a sea of pink flamingos that are beachcombing, too. And what’s better than a scuba dive to a sunken ship in Aruba? How about two dives. Regent’s Two-Tank Certified Dive takes scuba pros way down to the depths of the Caribbean Sea to explore a pair of World War II ships. The first, the German ship Antilla, which sank in 1940 when its captain chose to scuttle his vessel rather than surrender to the Dutch, is a 60-foot dive teeming with coral formations, tropical fish, and other marine life. The second is the legendary SS Pedernales, a British oil tanker that met its untimely end when the Germans torpedoed it while anchored in Aruba. A short dive at 25 feet, the site is another diver’s paradise—not to mention a history buff’s delight with its cabins and pipeline system still largely intact.

THE BEST OF MIAMI’S OCEAN DRIVE

While traveling with Regent and overnighting in Miami, restaurant- and boutique-hopping along Ocean Drive will pulse with the sounds and scents of the famous port city. Begin at the Art Deco Welcome Center, where knowledgeable guides will reveal the history of Miami’s intriguing architecture. After visiting some of the top Art Deco buildings, lunch is at the iconic Front Porch Café. A visit to South Beach calls for a pool party, and most any day of the week international DJs fuel a sonic scene at Miami’s hottest venues, including the famous Fontainebleau Miami. If low key is more your vibe, rent bikes and cycle along Ocean Drive, where shops for all ages call for plenty of stops. Once the sun sinks into the sea, Miami gets revved, with so many restaurants and clubs that decision fatigue is almost a given. You can’t go wrong with dinner at Gianni’s at the Villa located in Casa Casuarina, the former home of fashion designer, Gianni Versace.

Opposite: The Seven Seas Mariner® deck. Clockwise from top: Robust produce lines the streets of Cartagena; exploring Miami’s vibrant Ocean Drive; sun seeking in the Caribbean.

THE CALL OF CABO

When the Seven Seas Mariner drops anchor at Cabo San Lucas, passengers with a thirst for mescal and tequila can embark on a highspirited adventure with a visit to the countryside, where agave is harvested and coaxed to perfection. The plant has played a pivotal role in both Mexico’s economy and social life and visitors can explore various farms with meticulous agave production. Afterward, return to San Jose del Cabo and make time for lunch or dinner at the famous Flora Farms, a 25-acre organic working farm in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. Flora’s Kitchen dishes seasonal, handcrafted cuisine, while the adjacent Farm Spa features decadent, natureinspired treatments.

THE FLAVORS OF CARTAGENA

As the capitol of the Bolívar region of Colombia, Cartagena is a foodie’s paradise. Ideally situated to benefit from the many flavors of land and sea—mountain grown herbs, Caribbean seafood, and locally grown pork and beef—the city is sprinkled with inspired mom-and-pop restaurants and delicious street food. Just what to try? Your insider cheat sheet includes arepas, made of Colombian ground maize flour whipped into a tasty flatbread, and patacones, traditionally crafted by frying green plantains. After satisfying your appetite, Cartagena’s history and culture await. Visit Cuidad Amurallada, the former walled fortress which used to protect the city from pirates and is today home to diverse restaurants, shops, and bars. Lastly, the San Felipe de Barajas castle is a must for history buffs. It took 150 years to build, and visitors can wander through battlements and underground passages.

ABOVE and BEYOND A ONE-OF-A-KIND ANTARCTICA JOURNEY ABOARD CRYSTAL ENDEAVOR® IS A REMOTE ADVENTURE DONE RIGHT. BY JACKIE CARADONIO THERE’S NEVER A DULL MOMENT ON ANY ANTARCTIC EXCURSION—BUT WHEN YOU’RE SAILING CRYSTAL ENDEAVOR’S INCREDIBLE NEW ANTARCTICA AND THE ROSS SEA EXPEDITION, THE ADVENTURE AT SEA IS EQUALLY AS RIVETING ONBOARD AS IT IS ASHORE. Together, this magnificent expedition ship and itinerary make a perfect pairing for a far-south sojourn. Here’s everything you need to know about both. 30

Crystal Expedition Cruises®

Crystal Cruises® Antarctica and the Ross Sea Expedition doesn’t follow the usual path to the Southern Continent. Rather, it takes passengers to a place few know—and even fewer have seen—offering a rare glimpse into the history and exploration of this desert of ice and snow. THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED • The journey starts in a most unusual way, skipping the typical South American launch point for an Australian start out of Hobart, Tasmania. From there, the ship sails through the Tasman Sea and the Southern Ocean, past the Balleny Islands to eventually make

landfall on eastern Antarctica—far removed from the usual visits to the Antarctic Peninsula all the way to the west. On this side of the continent, rare discoveries abound, from the vestiges left behind by history’s most intrepid explorers to some of Antarctica’s most important research bases. INTO THE WILD • Of course, any Antarctic cruise is brimming with wild encounters, from massive floating icebergs measuring miles across to steep glaciers accumulated over centuries. Living amongst them are but a few rugged species that must fight for survival in their frigid territory: blue whales swimming in graceful pods, wandering albatrosses swooping down to snatch up prey from the water, and on shore, thousands of Adélie penguins waddling about. And Crystal Cruises expedition megayacht lives up to its name by endeavoring further than other ship to uncover the most untouched of these habitats.

HOME, SWEET HUT • When Ernest Shackleton made his original Antarctic expedition in the first decade of the 20th century, his stop on Ross Island—located just off the mainland—became an extended one. It was there that he and his crew survived the winter in a ramshackle hut from 1907 to 1909. When the weather at last allowed for safe passage, the great explorer left behind a place of warmth and sustenance for future visitors—including provisions and equipment to last 15 men for a year. Today, Shackleton’s Hut, along with another hut built by British Naval officer Robert Falcon Scott, remain intact (provisions and all) on Ross Island, and Crystal Endeavor is one of the few cruises that afford passengers the opportunity to relive the history of this famed expedition. FROM PASSENGER TO EXPLORER • Throughout the entire itinerary—which also visits explorers’ huts on Cape Adare, the snow-free oasis of Cape Hallett, and the Emperor penguin colonies on Coulman Island—Endeavor’s passengers become true pioneers, uncovering the past and present of this wild and wonderful continent at each stop. ME TO WE & THE SACRED GANGES

This journey from New Delhi to Kolkata includes 11 stops along the way to India’s most intriguing cities and sites. The first leg of the trip is devoted to a multi-day, immersive experience in rural Rajasthan, Udaipur, and Araveli, followed by a cruise along the Ganges River on the Ganges Voyager II. DO GOOD: After an evening of rest and recuperation at The Oberoi, Gurgaon resort, a quick flight lands you in Udaipur, where you’ll make your way to a bespoke cottage and tented camp in Rajasthan. There, ME to WE experts will guide you through a primer of basic Hindi phrases (“namaste” is more than a yogi blessing) and prepare you for your introduction to the local culture. A puja—traditional Hindu prayer ceremony—will bless the beginning of your important work and journey. The following morning, you’ll meet with community women in Araveli who will invite you into a day of their rural life: Accompany them through the village on their morning duties, then return to their home where chores may include feeding the livestock, hauling water from the well, and making meals (traditional chapati is a mainstay). Next stop is a visit with a local farmer who will explain his agricultural methods and crops (likely to include wheat, barley, sugarcane, and oilseeds). You’ll finish the day working on a sustainable development project—a task deemed necessary by the community, such as 36

The following day you’ll travel to nearby Udaipur to gain a greater understanding of the local culture, meandering through the colorful bazaars, lunching along the shores of Lake Pichola, and visiting the stunning City Palace. BE ADVENTUROUS: The next leg of your journey begins on the Ganges Voyager II—traveling along the sacred Ganges, known as the world’s holiest river—with seven stops along the way, each one more inspiring than the next. Explore architectural wonders including Hindu temples, the neoclassical Hazarduari Palace, and the famed Katra Mosque, built in 1723. Hop on a trishaw (a three-wheeled rickshaw) for an insider’s view of local markets and artisan villages, and, in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), visit Mother Teresa’s home and tomb. All the while, take in the stunning views from your ship, keeping your eye out for a rare sighting of the endangered Ganges river dolphin. BE WELL: Yoga is an important aspect of this journey, beginning with a sunrise session facing the Aravalli mountains. Once onboard the ship, Uniworld’s wellness program is centered around the practice with a resident yogi inviting you to begin each morning with classes, holistic lectures, and individualized instruction for every level. LUXURY Meets WILDERNESS Riding the rails with Rocky Mountaineer is the peak of quintessential Canadian adventure. BY JACKIE CARADONIO TO RIDE WITH ROCKY MOUNTAINEER IS TO WITNESS CANADA’S MOST STUNNING LANDSCAPES. The luxury trains aren’t your average locomotives; rather, their glassdomed coaches are panoramic portals slicing through the snow-capped peaks, thick green forests, and turquoise glacierfed lakes of the Rocky Mountains, a truly elegant experience on rails. Its two- to 13day journeys through the Fraser Canyon, Spiral Tunnels, Jasper National Park, and beyond are proof that travel isn’t about the destination at all when your journey looks this good. 38

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

YOU COME FOR THE SCENERY… Of course, the Rocky Mountains make for a stunning backdrop, but this scenery has levels. It’s hard to imagine landscapes more pristine—or more historic—as you pull into Kamloops, the old Gold Rush town at the junction of two rivers and surrounded by mountains. Cruising through the Shuswap region, you’ll glide past glistening lakes on one side and a multi-colored palette of pines, spruces, and firs on the other. As you glide through the heart of the Canadian Rockies onward to Jasper, you’ll pass serene lakes, rushing waterfalls, and the magnificent Mount Robson. …AND THE WILDLIFE These beautiful landscapes are home to beautiful creatures, too. As Rocky Mountaineer’s glass-domed trains make their

way through mountains and valleys, they offer front-row seats to fleeting wildlife. Moose, elk, and bighorn sheep are especially easy to spot, but the bucket-list sightings are the bald and golden eagles that regularly soar overhead, along with raptors and great horned owls, as you pass through Jasper National Park—and every time a passenger spots one you’ll be sure to hear a gasp (or even applause). And when you’re dashing through the thick of the rainforest, keep your eyes peeled for grizzlies and black bears—the elusive animals enjoy a healthy population in these parts. YOU STAY FOR THE CUISINE… Cresting Mount Robson and crossing the Continental Divide certainly work up an appetite—even if the trains are doing all the work. Luckily, you can eat your way through your journey, starting with decadent breakfasts (fresh scones and scrambled eggs, anyone?) and diving into daily three-course lunches of local delights like fresh salmon and wines from the Okanagan Valley. Come evening, when your train pulls into Quesnel, Whistler, Kamloops, Banff, or Jasper, you can continue sampling the local cuisine at hotels like Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and Fairmont Banff Springs, the latter of which is home to five restaurants alone, including a Canadian chophouse and an alpine stube. … AND THE ELEGANT STYLE With Rocky Mountaineer’s glass-domed coaches, the panoramic scenes unfold all around you—and even above you (all the better to glimpse the peaks of the incredible range as you zip past). Queen Mary 2 sails the waters surrounding New York City.

Sailing Tales CUNARD’S QUEEN MARY 2® IS TAKING BOOKWORMS ON A SCHOLARLY SAILING FOR THE AGES. BY JACKIE CARADONIO

THERE’S SOMETHING UNDENIABLY SCHOLARLY ABOUT A TRANSATLANTIC CROSSING. Maybe it’s because the vast ocean between New York and England has been the site of so many heroic and romantic tales, all told with the eloquence and elegance that befits only the grandest of historic journeys. Or perhaps it’s because Queen Mary 2®, the Cunard® ship that specializes in sailings across the pond, has a storied history all its own, bearing the name of a North Atlantic–going ocean liner that carried Britain’s most regal and noble to America (and later, Allied soldiers during World War II). This December, a transatlantic sailing on the Queen Mary 2 will be cultured in an entirely new way. Departing Southampton for New York on December 1, 2020, the 2,620-passenger ocean liner’s second annual Literary Festival at Sea will bring the greatest stories and authors of our time together in one Champagne-fueled voyage. Launched in partnership with the Cheltenham Literature Festival, The Times, and The Sunday Times, this stimulating sailing will feature seven days of events, talks, and interactive workshops led by some of the world’s most respected novelists, historians, poets, critics, and journalists. Literary greats like Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin and English novelist Kate Mosse will speak about their life and

work, while columnists for the British newspapers will recount the year’s most compelling stories. More talks and workshops will dive into the best books, films, and musicals from both sides of the pond. For this holiday cruise, the Queen Mary 2 will look as stunning as ever, dressed in glittering red and gold for the season. In-between program highlights, passengers can live out their own seafaring stories, sipping Champagne on the observation decks while watching the churning Atlantic sail by, dining on crêpes suzette and suckling pig croquettes while dressed to the nines at the Britannia dining room, and sitting in on readings of some of the best holiday-time writings in literary history, from Rudyard Kipling’s heart-rending homesick poem, Christmas in India, to P.G. AS THE SAYING GOES, GETTING THERE IS HALF THE FUN. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO AN EXPERIENCE ABOARD A BELMOND TRAIN, GETTING THERE IS APPARENTLY ALL THE FUN. Whether it’s rolling through

the craggy coasts of Ireland on the Belmond Grand Hibernian (with incredible train interiors inspired by Dublin’s Georgian architecture) or discovering the heart of Peru’s ancient kingdoms on the Belmond Andean Explorer (with an onboard spa and plush alpaca accouterments), each Belmond trip has all the trappings for some major joie de vivre. Yet the company’s newest package takes the cake—and the Champagne, too. Come November 7-9, 2020, Belmond is hosting a legendary journey for LGBTQ+ guests, traveling from Venice to Paris aboard its Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, a state-ofthe-art train featuring vintage carriages that have been meticulously restored by hand with beautifully authentic Art Deco details. A trio of handsome dining cars are helmed by a master chef, while wine courses are selected by the onboard sommelier and an elegant bar car is replete with a Champagne bar and baby grand piano, resident pianist included.

But wait! With this special itinerary, the party gets started before the train even leaves the station—with a one-night stay at the storied Belmond Hotel Cipriani on Venice’s Giudecca Island and a gala dinner at the Granaries of the Republic. The entire adventure transports guests back to the Roaring Twenties, with plenty of surprises along the way. Here, five wow-worthy details about this exclusive excursion.

1. If the Granaries of the Republic sounds familiar, it might be because the property was the scene of George and Amal Clooney’s 2014 nuptials celebration, where they invited 100 friends for dinner the evening after their starstudded wedding. 2. Once onboard the Venice Simplon-OrientExpress, guests will settle into the lap of luxury with a three-course, silver-service lunch. 3. While the train’s interior is nothing but extraordinary, the scene outside is awe-inspiring as you course through the Italian Dolomites, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. 4. The dress code is part of the magical experience, calling only for your finest of duds. “Smart daywear” is required during morning and afternoon, which means jeans, T-shirts and sneakers are no-nos. When night falls, it’s time to break out the feathers and fringe, tuxedos and top hats, as the four-course dinner and dance party is a gussied-up Roaring Twenties affair. 5. If you ever find time to rest your weary head, it will be inside an original 1920s sleeping car, transformed into a plush private cabin (choose from a single or twin, or go rock star with a suite). Each comes with a 24-hour steward at your beck and call.

Visitors can join a cooking class or try their own hand at cheese- and buttermaking.

LONDON

Culture

Named the most popular destination by the Traveller’s Choice Best of 2020 Awards, the UK is a bucket-list destination when it comes to art, music, theater, and shopping.

THEATER IN LONDON

London’s Theatreland district is world-renowned for its exciting shows. In 2020, its stages will welcome some of the world’s most talented actors, actresses, and directors. Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal will star in the Stephen Sondheim and

James Lapine masterpiece Sunday in the Park with George at the Savoy Theatre, while actors Daniel Radcliffe and Alan Cumming headline a revival of Samuel Beckett’s comedy Endgame at the Old Vic Theatre. Beloved classics, like Mary Poppins, which returns to its original West End home at the Prince Edward Theatre, are back this year. And musicals will make debuts, including the Broadway hit Pretty Woman: The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre.

STREET ART IN BRISTOL

Banksy, born in Bristol and one of the world’s most recognized street artists, was instrumental in the urban art wave that swept through the city in the 1980s and 90s. Today his graffiti imagery can be found in London, Los Angeles, and New York, shining a spotlight on social issues and controversial subjects. A number of original works can still be viewed in his hometown along the Banksy Trail. Guided and self-guided walking tours pass famous images like the “Girl with the Pierced Eardrum” located near the Bristol Marina and “Mild, Mild West” in Bristol’s cultural quarter, Stokes Croft.

MUSIC IN LEEDS

The UK has enough music festivals to easily fill your calendar, year round, from Glastonbury in Somerset to the Isle of Wight Festival. Tickets for Leeds Festival are always some of the hardest to score. One of the largest music gatherings in the UK, this year’s event takes place August 28-30 at Bramham Park with former Oasis frontman and headliner, Liam Gallagher.

B BRAZIL IS A COUNTRY OF SUPERLATIVES: THE WORLD’S FIFTH-LARGEST COUNTRY, THIRD MOST POPULOUS, AND HOME TO THE AMAZON, EARTH’S LARGEST RAINFOREST. It’s also a land

of rhythms and contrasts, with vibrant cities, famous music, endless biodiversity, varied landscapes, stunning beaches, a fascinating history, and friendly people. Best of all, U.S. citizens no longer need a visa to visit Brazil, so now’s the time to go. Here’s my cheat sheet to best experience its playful personality and heartfelt hospitality.

RIO DE JANEIRO > NATURAL BEAUTY, MUSIC + JOIE DE VIVRE

Brazil’s most famous city has been enchanting visitors for more than 100 years. No city comes close to matching the sheer physical beauty of Rio or the allure of its beaches, music, and world’s largest carnival. The city’s two top attractions, Sugarloaf and Corcovado, won’t disappoint, no matter how many photos you’ve viewed of the mountains prior to visiting. Explore Sugarloaf at sunrise or sunset, when you can

marvel at the city waking at dawn or lighting up for dusk. Located 2,000 feet above sea level, Corcovado (“hunchback” in Portuguese) is accessed by driving up a winding ascent or by taking the funicular, which begins at the base of Corcovado Mountain. Rio is also all about sand and sea. Its best-known beaches? The alluring Ipanema and Copacabana. And if you’re seeking coastlines with fewer crowds and equally beautiful settings, check out São Conrado, Grumari, and Prainha. Afterward, visit Centro, the city’s oldest district, with grandiose buildings like the Municipal Theater. Don’t miss the Paço Imperial, a palace where emperors used to live and which today houses a beautiful museum. The stunning interiors of the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, Rio’s most

beautiful library, will certainly impress, too. Refuel with coffee and pastries at Confeitaria Colombo, a local institution, and then visit the Museum of Tomorrow in the newly renovated harbor district. Make time to wander around Santa Teresa, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, and don’t miss walking up colorful Escadaria Selarón, a handmade staircase. A visit to Rio isn’t complete without experiencing its vibrant music. Enjoy live bands and dancing in the bohemian Lapa district at top venues like Bar Carioca da Gema and Rio Scenarium, or unwind to classic tunes at Restaurante Vinícius e Bossa Nova Bar in Ipanema. The city also has a penchant for outdoor adventure, including hiking up Pedra da Gávea mountain, or rappelling, hang gliding, kayaking, sailing, and biking. If gardening is a passion, visit the Jardim Botânico, a fantastic showcase of indigenous flora.

WHERE TO STAY: Belmond Copacabana Palace, the most famous hotel in South America and Rio’s quintessential luxury hotel. When visiting Ipanema Beach, stay at stylish Hotel Fasano Rio or at the Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema, which has been recently remodeled.

The country’s first capital, Salvador, is a blend of Africa and South America, and nowhere else in the Western Hemisphere is the heritage of former African slaves honored in such a respectful manner. Salvador is the heart and soul of Brazilian music, cuisine, and traditions. What’s more, its carnival rivals Rio’s, welcoming two million revelers every year for six days of music and dancing. Start your visit in the Cidade Alta (Upper City), home to the largest concentration of colonial architecture in the Americas. The Pelourinho district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a beautiful labyrinth of cobblestone streets and colorful historic buildings. Of all the churches in the area, the most notable is Igreja de São Francisco, a spectacular masterpiece of Brazilian Baroque architecture. Visit the convent courtyard, which showcases the country’s finest collection of hand-painted, blue-and-white Portuguese tile murals.

Built from scratch in the country’s remote interior and opened in 1960, Brazil’s capital is the only 20thcentury city with UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Largo do Pelourinho is a beloved square, arguably the most photographed site in the city. Other notable attractions include the Mercado Modelo, the original customs house, as well as the Solar do Unhão, a historic building featuring the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia. North of the city is the Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, a site of pilgrimages and miracles for faithful Catholics and the followers of Candomblé, the religion brought by African slaves and still practiced today. Experience old forts such as the impressive Santo Antonio da Barra and catch a performance of the Balé Folclórico da Bahia, which features the most talented dancers and drummers in Salvador. Savor delicious regional specialties at my favorite restaurant, Casa de Tereza, located in the Rio Vermelho neighborhood. Salvador is also the gateway for many nature escapes, including Chapada Diamantina National Park and the beautiful beaches of Trancoso and Itacaré to the South.

WHERE TO STAY: Hotel Fasano Salvador. Perfectly located within an iconic building from the 1930s, it’s also the former headquarters of the newspaper A Tarde. B Hotel Brasília. Located on the Monumental Axis, the hotel is anchored in the contemporary architecture that defines Brasília.

BRASÍLIA > A BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE

For anyone interested in architecture and design, a visit to Brasília is a must. Built from scratch in the country’s remote interior and opened in 1960, Brazil’s capital is the only 20thcentury city with UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The story of Brasília is mind-boggling, as the city site was formerly a vast wilderness, with no roads to shuttle construction materials. The creation of Brasília was helmed by a brilliant team: urban planner Lúcio Costa, architect Oscar Niemeyer, and lauded landscape architect, Roberto Burle Marx. The city’s futuristic architecture, original design, and unique layout all create an unforgettable experience. The most interesting section of Brasilia is found along the Eixo Monumental; this central axis houses the Supreme Court, Palacio do Planalto (Brazil’s White House), and iconic Congress building. My two other favorite architectural wonders are the Palacio do Itamaraty, the Ministry of Foreign affairs, and the Cathedral—shaped like a futuristic crown of thorns without any supporting columns, illuminated with multi-colored windows. Don’t miss driving through the city at night, when design-forward buildings are lit up in a white, space-age glow.

The jewel of this region is the colonial gem of Ouro Preto, a two-hour drive from the gateway city of Belo Horizonte and home to more than 20 landmark churches (Nossa Senhora do Pilar and São Francisco are standouts). Ouro Preto is also the cradle of Brazil’s independence movement. Wander through the narrow streets and visit the Museu da Inconfidência for a new perspective on Brazilian history. Nearby, you’ll find the charming small towns of Mariana and Tiradentes, filled with priceless art and architecture.

IGUASSU FALLS > NATURE’S ARTWORK

Don’t leave Brazil without seeing Iguaçu Falls—the largest in the world at almost two miles wide and 270 feet high. Iguaçu is made up of more than 200 distinct waterfalls crashing down in two dramatic steps into Argentina. The roar of the cataracts, combined with the spectacular jungle setting, is remarkable. Feel a rush of adrenaline as you descend paths leading to the Devil’s Throat, the deepest and most dramatic area of the falls. For a truly unique experience, visit both the Brazilian and Argentinian sections for two completely different perspectives.

WHERE TO STAY: Iguaçu Falls> Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, a classic luxury resort with exceptional views and early access to the falls.

Ouro Preto> Hotel Solar do Rosário, an authentic, colonial-style hotel in the town’s center.

Opposite: The Rosario dos Pretos Church in Salvador da Bahia. From top left: Belmond Hotel das Cataratas; The Cathedral of Brasília, the city’s Roman Catholic church.

FOR THE ACTIVE TRAVELER

Vancouver is often lauded as being one of the fittest cities on Canada’s West Coast. Locals have plenty of ways to keep in shape, thanks to urban parks, innovative fitness studios, and the Seawall, a 17-mile waterfront path for biking and jogging. Here, Saschie MacLean-Magbanua, founder of Formation Studio, shares her perfect itinerary for a healthy long weekend.

FRIDAY

Kick-start the weekend with cocktails at the Botanist, a swanky downtown restaurant. Talented mixologists use the four elements as their muse to craft libations like the Deep Cove, a sea-inspired combo of gin, blue algae, and sea buckthorn. Non-tipplers can still celebrate with “free spirit” drinks like the Not Yet, a mix of carrot, golden beet, ginger, and lemon. For dinner, head to Miku, a seafood spot dishing some of the best sushi in the city that counts Beyoncé and Jay-Z among its many fans.

64

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

SATURDAY

Fuel up with a pour-over coffee and healthy avocado toast at the new Palate Kitchen on West Hastings and Hornby, then rent bikes and explore the Seawall or book a Stanley Park adventure with Cycle City. Come afternoon, head to Grouse Mountain, the ultimate playground for winter snowshoeing and summer hiking. If you’re feeling adventurous, reach the summit via a skyride surf, where you ride the gondola on the outside of the cable car. Cap the day at star chef David Hawksworth’s casual, veggie-forward restaurant, Nightingale.

Clockwise from far left: Handcrafted cocktails at the Botanist restaurant; The Douglas, Autograph Collection is located within Parq Vancouver; restaurant L’Abattoir is located on the site of Vancouver’s first jail; circling Vancouver’s downtown via bikes.

Opposite: Gastown, the oldest neighborhood in Vancouver. From top: Stanley Park offers a natural respite from the hustle and bustle of city life; Miku is known for serving the city’s finest sushi.

SUNDAY

Wake up with a Freedom class (essentially a fitness-fueled dance party) at Formation Studio in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. After class, hop over to The Juice Truck for a smoothie bowl or cold-pressed green juice. Wander through the neighborhood and explore the street art, as this area showcases work from the Vancouver Mural Festival. If weather permits, take a guided kayaking outing in Deep Cove with Deep Cove Kayaks. End your day with dinner at Burdock & Co, a hyper-local restaurant with a killer biodynamic wine list.

FOR THE FOODIE

Home to the largest Chinatown in Canada, a vibrant cocktail culture, and stellar seato-table restaurants, Vancouver’s food scene is more exciting than ever. Here, Justine Smith, Executive Chef of Sonora Restaurant on Sonora Island, shares how to soak up the many flavors of Vancouver.

FRIDAY

The oldest neighborhood in Vancouver, charming Gastown has no shortage of hip bars and restaurants lining its cobblestone streets. Start the night at the Diamond, a soulful cocktail lounge with drinks ranging from boozy (try the cedar-spiked Sazerac) to refreshing (the Aperol anchored Jolly Rodger). Wander over to L’Abattoir for dinner. Located between historic Gaoler’s Mews and Blood Alley, the restaurant is set within the site of Vancouver’s first jail. Skilled sommeliers will suggest wine to match such French-influenced fare as duck breast brushed with thyme honey.

Clockwise from top: Nightingale’s restaurant is helmed by lauded chef David Hawksworth; a serene day trip includes kayaking along Vancouver’s scenic waterways; colorful urban street art.

SATURDAY

Get schooled in dim sum, Chinese barbecue, and more on an Asian Eats food crawl with Vancouver Foodie Tours. The four-hour experience visits the neighboring city of Richmond, whose population is 54 percent Chinese. As you taste sensational hot soup dumplings and Shanghainese rice cakes, you’ll also learn about the area’s fascinating Canadian-Chinese community. Call in advance to snag a dinner reservation at Published on Main, the hot new restaurant from industry veteran Gus StieffenhoferBrandson. The menu of seasonal small plates—think lamb neck with lentil curry and spicy greens and beets with meadowsweet tahini—are super shareable.

SUNDAY

Jam Café in the Kitsilano neighborhood will most certainly have a line, but the eggstudded buttermilk biscuit melt and banana walnut pancakes are worth the wait, and breakfast is served all day. Get to know the region’s purveyors and artisans by browsing the Kitsilano Farmers Market, located at 10th Avenue and Larch Street (from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May through October). If still in a food coma post brunch, stroll along the shores of lovely Kitsilano Beach and you’ll be ready to table-hop again in no time.

POSTCARD FROM … NEW YORK CITY

with SHANNON

KNAPP

President & CEO of The Leading Hotels of the World I’D MOST LIKE TO DINE WITH: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Madeleine Albright, Oprah, Ellen, and the list goes on. Sitting around a table with women who changed the world and created a new reality for the next generation of women would be so fascinating. Their stories about struggles and successes would be incredible. NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT: Melatonin and an updated collection of downloaded shows. Since I fly quite often, I like to be prepared in case I have seen all of the movies offered by the airline. FAVORITE RECENT FOODIE FIND: My culinary choices are dictated by my two children who are 1 ½ and 3 years old. Mac and cheese and pasta and butter are dishes of choice for their sophisticated palates. 80

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

WHEN I’M NOT WORKING YOU’LL FIND ME: On a beach, where I am most happy and relaxed. It’s my mission to see as many beaches around the world as I can. Next up, a return trip to Anguilla and then hopefully Okinawa, Japan, this summer. TRAVEL THAT MATTERS: At Leading Hotels’ 2019 Annual Convention in Marrakech, our hoteliers and I visited The Center Fiers & Forts, a refuge for disadvantaged children, and Tameslouth Village, a community with a co-op supporting local women and other members of the village. Our member hotel, Royal Mansour Marrakech, partners closely with these organizations and it was a truly moving experience to have the opportunity to connect with the local community.

BUCKET-LIST TRIP: An African safari followed by a beach vacation in Mauritius would be a dream vacation. I’m hoping to make this trip a reality when my kids get a bit older. NEVER THOUGHT I’D … Hold the Lombardi Trophy. I am a major NFL fan, and back in 2010 I had the great fortune to ride in the Orpheus Parade in New Orleans for Mardi Gras right after the Saints won the Super Bowl. Sean Payton was one of the Monarchs of Orpheus and brought the trophy to the party. It was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had. CURRENT OBSESSION: The Economist. I have a long commute on the NYC subway and always have my AirPods handy. The digital weekly version of The Economist allows me to get through the whole issue in just a couple of days while commuting. I appreciate the alternative perspective to the U.S. media coverage of domestic and world events.
