POINT OF VIEW

Travel with Intent When asked why we’re passionate about travel, our answer is easy: Because travel is a catalyst for connection. Given today’s increasingly fast-paced digital world, the need for authentic connection may be at an all-time high. When we travel and experience new destinations and cultures, we are inevitably changed. Perspectives shift; stereotypes fade. Compassion and curiosity is piqued. And, perhaps of top note, travel is fun! We all have an adventurous side—whether it’s defined by outdoor pursuits in remote locales, or foodie and cultural immersions in urban hot spots. Within these pages we celebrate our shared desire for new experiences. We’ll take you from Antarctica to Austin, and from Thailand to the Taj Mahal. Lastly, we’re often asked what the top benefit is of working with a travel advisor. And that answer, too, is simple: access. We are proud to share our expert knowledge about where to go, when to go, and why go. We are meticulous about researching the next “it” locations yet are also uncovering new reasons to return to favorite locales. We aim to deliver every whim on your travel wish list while also ensuring peace of mind. We think outside the box so your travel blueprint is constantly fine-tuned and your fun meter is maxed.

HAPPY ADVENTURING -

THE INSPIRATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN YOU.

“On day eight of a 71-day march, Kevin Fedarko and a hiking companion enjoy a rare stretch of beach below the tangerine light of sunrise, before clamoring up into the maze of rock and time above them. Due to the steep cliff and many layers of rock, we rarely hiked near the river.” —Pete McBride

WILD at HEART Award-winning National Geographic photographer Pete McBride and author Kevin Fedarko hiked 750 miles through the Grand Canyon. Why? A new book tells all. “The minute you leave the river, by even just a few hundred feet, you enter a different Grand Canyon—a world of secret labyrinths, mazes, ecological pockets of splendor, and one of the widest ranges of biodiversity in any national park in the United States, including Hawaii,” writes award-winning National Geographic photographer and author Pete McBride in his book, The Grand Canyon: Between River and Rim. As just one of a few dozen daring souls who’ve through-hiked the Grand Canyon (less than those who’ve orbited the Earth), McBride’s mission reveals two men willing to suffer and soul-search for a cause. The recent release, published by Rizzoli, tells the story of the 750-plus-mile hike through the entire length of America’s iconic national park. With a foreword by Hampton Sides and an introduction by Fedarko, this beautiful coffee table book takes readers on a gorgeous visual journey while also posing critical questions about wilderness conservation. “If we cannot protect this space, the seventh natural wonder of the world, what can we protect?” McBride asks.

ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES November 2018

As the new Miraval Austin makes its debut (page 52), the 220-acre Texas Hill Country wellness retreat has rapidly climbed my list. And that’s the power of bucket lists. While we evolve and change, so do our dream trips. As we keep reaching for

Check Mate What is a bucket-list check? For me, it’s an aspirational trip that pushes my comfort zone and elevates my world view, as discovered on a recent trip to Kenya and Tanzania. For some, it’s exploring a country that defines their family origin. For others, it may be an adrenaline-packed feat, like summiting a daunting mountain peak or

those trips that perhaps once seemed out of reach, the true nature of travel is revealed: Imagining the ultimate journey keeps shaping our perspective, prior to even boarding the flight. Plus, the anticipation is half the fun. Happy Reading!

surfing Jaws. For most, it’s a trip that impacts us on a profound level. As a result, it has a ripple effect: Wish-list trips can positively push the needle in how we relate to ourselves and the world. With this issue we celebrate bucket-list bliss and destinations that have extra oomph. Much like our own personality types—locations pulse with authentic blueprints. Australia (page 58) is gregarious and inviting, teasing most any type visitor. Fiji (page 66) is seductive and sublime—and not just for honeymooners, as witnessed in our story about island-hopping with the family. Mexico City is sophisticated and adventurous, showcased in Editor at Large Ignacio Maza’s recent visit (page 72). And weekend escapes to U.S. cities?

Pay it Forward Conservation travel customizes safaris and brings you up close and personal with endangered African wildlife. BY A M I E E W H I T E B E A Z L E Y

The first time you see an animal in the African bush, it changes you. To be close to an elephant calf as it nuzzles beneath the hinds of its mother, or watch a full-grown, two-ton rhino running in the hills is testament to the raw power and beauty of wildlife. Connecting people to these places and experiences is the mission behind Swain Destinations, and via interactions between people and animals, modern conservation is being redefined.

“When a person experiences the raw, wild beauty of African wildlife, they learn to appreciate the world around them,” says Dorota Ladosz, animal caretaker at Care for the Wild Rhino Sanctuary, the largest rhino orphanage and sanctuary in the world and a destination for Swain guests traveling in South Africa. “Seeing a pride of lions drinking from a river during a drought may teach and encourage a traveler to conserve water and use it more wisely, as water is life. By experiencing first-hand the basic necessities of the wild, it stirs an emotional feeling which is often more powerful than any digital advert or billboard. Conservation travel touches a person on a deeper level.” Conservation tourism can help serve endangered wildlife, creating income to employ rangers, support breeding, and educate local communities on the need to keep animal populations thriving. This curated list of immersive safaris not only showcases the Big Five, but celebrates travel with intent.

WORK WITH ORPHANED ELEPHANTS AT CAMP JABULANI

Camp Jabulani is a luxury safari lodge in Kapama Private Game Reserve, near Kruger National Park. In addition to its safari, the lodge offers opportunities to care for elephants that have been orphaned via its Elephant Experience. Meeting the caretakers, feeding the animals, tracking them on foot and watching elephants swim and play in one of the property’s dams allows guests to interact with animals in their natural state. Camp Jabulani also partners with the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. Here guests experience a personal and highly immersive interaction with the Jabulani Herd of elephants. The Centre is active in research, breeding, rehabilitation, and the release of endangered animals back into the wild.

CARE FOR WILD RHINO AFRICA SANCTUARY

South Africa is home to the densest population of rhino in the world but has also seen a 9,000 percent increase in rhino poaching from 2007 to 2014. Last year alone more than 1,000 rhinos were killed for their horns, a luxury item in Vietnam and China. At Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary,

travelers can work with the center as they rescue orphaned rhinos due to poaching. “All the rhinos that are orphaned through rhino poaching in the Kruger National Park, South Africa, are taken to Care for Wild where they are cared for, rehabilitated, and reintroduced back into the wild,” says Ladosz. “Research on successful rehabilitation and future release back into the wild is being done daily.”

CHEETAH OUTREACH

Cheetah Outreach is an education and communitybased program created to raise awareness and campaign for the survival of the cheetah, an animal that took four million years of evolution to become the fastest land animal in the world, and then endangered in only 100 years of humans hunting them. According to Cheetah Outreach, at the turn of the 20th century, an estimated 100,000 cheetahs lived throughout Africa and in parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. Today there are

only about 7,100 of these cats left in the wild. A visit to the Cheetah Outreach project—where they handrear cheetah cubs in Cape Town—can be organized as a full- or half-day excursion. Travelers will have an opportunity to encounter adult cheetahs, cheetah cubs, bat-eared foxes, meerkats, and carcal. “Being able to see these wild animals up close and being able to connect with them, look them in their eyes and see their soul, it makes a person humble,” adds Ladosz. “Caring for orphaned, injured, and abandoned animals gives a great feeling of accomplishment. “When deciding where to go and what to do, does the experience have wow potential?”

Clockwise from left: The Seven Seas Explorer entices discerning oenophiles; former pro baseball player Bret Saberhagen and author Risa Feldman; Portofino, Italy.

plan vacations with a rating system called the wow factor. Translation? When deciding where to go and what to do, does the experience have wow potential? As such, when a vacation was much needed, I started planning a trip with my friend and Major League Baseball star, Bret Saberhagen—a two-time Cy Young award winner and World Series MVP. Our criteria? Travel somewhere international that offered a mix of relaxation and sightseeing, was no more than 10 days long, and of top note, had all the ingredients for wow factor. With many enticing options on the table, I decided to research luxury cruising. Bret and I had both cruised before, but never on a truly luxurious ship. In researching the finest cruise lines, Regent’s Seven Seas Explorer won out. It matched my “wish list” in terms of size, dining options, and ports: Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Sete, Marseille, Monte Carlo, Portofino, Florence, and Rome.

SUITE TALK We step aboard, and I immediately realize I’ve made a smart decision. With a glass of champagne in hand, Bret and I check out the floating hotel. Each deck is beautiful, with majestic chandeliers and inspiring art work. Perhaps most enticing is the enormous Canyon Ranch spa and its infinity pool. My first wow occurs when we enter our magnificent suite. The bathroom is made of marble and stone; the bed linens are 1000-thread count. Sliding glass doors span the living room and bedroom and open to a huge balcony. I choose this category suite for its round-the-clock personal butler service (why not indulge?). Having a butler for a week at sea is a true luxury. Clothes are pressed right before wearing, and a perfectly chilled glass of fine champagne is served within minutes of asking for one—pampering at its peak.

Land Rover Top 5 Mediterranean Port Excursions AIX-EN-PROVENCE: CHEESE AND WINE Explore Aix-en-Provence with a private guide. Highlights include the Holy Savior Cathedral (which took 10 centuries to build), and the Mousse Fountain, where the Romans bathed. As the birthplace of Paul Cezanne, Provence houses his former studio space, where he painted “The Woman with the Coffee Pot.” Stop at La Fromagerie du Passage, and sample local cheese and wine pairings. MALLORCA: TASTE OF THE PAST Navigate the circular Bellver Castle, which has amazing views of Palma. Learn about the agricultural traditions in the Pla de Sant Jordi region at 18th-century manor house Els Calderes. In Montuiri Village, watch local artisans create unique Majorca pearls using a time-honored technique.

Guests aboard the Seven Seas Explorer enjoy an enticing menu of complimentary shore excursions.

DECADENT DINING For me, dining aboard cruise ships can be hit or miss. Seven Seas Explorer changed that. Bret is a meat-and-potatoes guy, whereas I—a host of Epicurean Exploring— look for authentic, locally-sourced dishes when traveling. Pacific Rim, Chartreuse, and Prime 7 are the ship’s exclusive restaurants, each with a uniquely elegant theme. Compass Rose and La Veranda are the main dining rooms, with a more casual vibe. Not only are the dishes innovative and exceptionally prepared, they’re matched by seamless service from the staff. And as a self-proclaimed wine snob, Bret was thrilled to find such an extensive wine list. We sip Belle Glos and Caymus each night. On the night of our first evening meal, we opt for a nightcap in one of the stylish lounges. As we pass the theater, where the evening’s live show is performed, we peek in. We’re lured in by the exceptional talent and watch the show in its entirety, which then becomes our go-to every night.

PORTS, PLEASE! The Seven Seas Explorer includes impressive complimentary shore excursions, with enough choices to please discerning travel types. While anchoring in Marseille, we visited Châteaneuf-duPape (in the Southern Rhone Valley), for a private wine tasting. To gain a different perspective of the incredible coastline of Portofino, we sailed around the island, before stepping off to explore its charm. In Monte Carlo, we compromised: Cocktails at the renowned Hotel de Paris Hotel (my choice) followed by a trackside walk of the Grand Prix of Monaco, which was taking place the following week (Bret’s choice). The nutshell? Regent Seven Seas Cruises had wow factor to spare. It exceeded every expectation, was worth every dollar spent, and made a former Kansas City Royal baseball player feel royal again.

In Convo With … Lindblad Naturalist and Citizen Science Coordinator, Dr. Jimmy White How is the Lindblad onboard experience different than other expedition cruises? People often ask me, “why Lindblad?” My answer is always the same: You are choosing the people with whom you will experience these remarkable places. There are many expedition ships now. Many are well appointed and offer similar destinations. The difference is the people onboard. My first day in Antarctica I was on the bridge of the National Geographic Explorer. Looking across the bridge, the expedition staff present had 215 combined years of experience in Antarctica. You are part of the experience, immersed in it. From the open bridge policy, to dining with the expedition team, the culture is very inclusive.

What do guests most comment on when first experiencing Antarctica? Antarctica gets into your soul like no other place on earth. People often have a preconceived idea of what it will be like. When you are in a zodiac, surrounded by walls of ice and the silence is broken by a humpback whale coming up for a breath— so close you can feel the vibration in your bones—nothing else matters. Culinary Capital Top Tables in Cartagena

“Colombia celebrates cuisine, family, music, and people. It’s what makes the culture warm and expressive.”

radled in the Andes, Medellin is a breathtaking city flaunting serious views no matter where you stand. In town, the backdrops are stunning; take a cable car to overlook the city, and you’re surrounded by Instagram-worthy panoramic views. This is how I first experienced Colombia when I visited nearly a decade ago. The natural beauty was inspiring, yet it was the people, music, and culture that led me to book a return trip just a year later. This time, I traveled to Barranquilla and Bogota. And two years after that, I was fortunate enough to experience Cartagena. All cities are wonderful in their unique way, but there’s a common link each place shares that compelled me to visit time and again. Locals say the country has flavor. It can be as simple as sipping guarapo with friends at an al fresco café, or as dramatic as exploring native wildlife in the unspoiled countryside. Colombians celebrate cuisine, family, music, and people. It’s what makes the culture warm and expressive. Colombia is a hub for diverse musical styles, from Caribbean and salsa to electronic and pop. All are woven in perfect harmony with the rhythm of the country. In fact, music served as the soundtrack to my Colombian travels. Salsa music set a spirited scene at night on the cobblestone streets of

MARIA. If wanting to splurge, this is your spot. Chef Alejandron Ramirez serves a contemporary twist on traditional Colombian fare. Sip a Cactus Margarita and take in the restaurant’s unique artwork. COCINA DE PEPINA. This simple yet tasty outpost dishes a unique fusion of Colombian and Caribbean ingredients, like fresh eggplant, lemon, and tomatoes served with fish and tropical fruits.

Cartagena. Live Caribbean beats brought a sense of place to the island of San Andres. And dance tunes at nightclubs in Bogota were infectious. Music makes Colombia special, and it’s celebrated throughout the year with must-attend music events like the Cartagena Classic Music Festival and Stereo Picnic Bogota. Music is an inherent and integral aspect to Colombian culture—you’ll find merengue and salsa dancers at famous restaurants, while traditional cumbia dance (with drums, flutes, and percussion), can be experienced in public squares. James Rodriguez, a famous Colombian soccer player, is known to do the merengue at public events and after scoring goals at World Cup; Sofia Vergara is always catching a beat at awards ceremonies including the Emmys and Grammys; and native Shakira introduced Colombian hip shaking to the world. The flavors and the rhythm of the country is the reason I kept returning. You feel its energy in the lively streets, and at top attractions such as Cartagena’s Old Town, the trendy Lleras Park neighborhood in Medellin, and Bogota’s famous colonial town of Candelaria. Colombia is more enticing with every visit, and it gives me every reason to return to experience additional unforgettable journeys.

PATA NEGRA. Located in a charming colonial house and considered one of the most popular restaurants in Cartagena, Pata Negra features a tapas bar, rooftop lounge, and a colorful main interior. EL GOBERNADOR. Nestled in the Bastión Luxury Hotel in the historic district, the menu is created by the Rausch brothers and helmed by Viviana Liebano, who serves locally sourced ingredients with a modern twist.

Packing for a Purpose With each Micato Safaris trip sold, AmericaShare sends a child to school. BY MEREDITH DIERS

Adventurists have long traveled with purpose and good will. Fortunately, creating global impact and sustainable connections across the globe is becoming increasingly easier. AmericaShare, the philanthropic arm of Micato Safaris, gives travelers a deeper understanding and appreciation of Africa. For more than 30 years, Micato-AmericaShare has worked to improve the lives of those in Nairobi’s Mukuru slum, a grossly impoverished neighborhood. Its main efforts are to provide children with a quality education in carefully vetted schools and equip other community members with basic educational and career-building resources—the manifestation of AmericaShare’s belief that “education is the most lastingly effective way to erode the cycle of poverty.” With each safari sold, Micato-AmericaShare sends a child to school.

“When Micato-AmericaShare helps a child, we’re helping the child’s family as well as the community. And by association we’re giving our travelers something really special—the satisfaction of knowing their safari is making a difference,” says Lorna Macleod, AmericaShare co-founder and executive director. While experiencing the luxurious safaris hosted by Micato, guests who opt to spend time in AmericaShare’s Harambee Community Centre in Mukuru, Kenya, will witness daily Kenyan life firsthand. “While my son Jack gained a new love and appreciation for wildlife on safari, nothing compared to the thrill of visiting Harambee Centre,” says longtime Micato General Manager Patti Buffolano, who recently took her son, Jack, on safari for the first time. “To say Jack was welcomed with open arms would be an understatement. It truly was one of the greatest experiences of his life.” Guests are inspired by hardworking locals who run the library, computer center, and education programs, and can witness how the Mukuru community is evolving, despite many challenges. People left behind by ill parents and poverty are getting a second chance. It touched us all so profoundly. Our kids decided to sponsor two children, and [then] we sponsored eight more.” Additionally, the School Sponsorship Programme lets travelers stay connected to Africa and their AmericaShare experiences long after the end of their trips. The program matches inspired Micato travelers with children aspiring to attend primary and high school in Kenya. ne moment there’s nothing but sea. The next, a pod of 39-foot-long whale sharks have taken up position beside me. I’ve sucked water through my snorkel in shock, but now I gather myself and stare each gentle giant in the eye. In the weightlessness of the ocean, these massive creatures seem to float in air, as if we’re flying together in formation. I’m so overcome by their presence that hot tears smudge my goggle lenses. As a Sydney native, I’ve grown up exploring the vast Australian coastline. Here, visitors can meet the ocean’s most extraordinary creatures and lounge on the world’s finest beaches. Put simply, there’s nothing quite like Australia. Its personality is as diverse as its explorers; its mystique has inspired many to change course and stay much longer than originally planned. Further north is the stunning outback of the Kimberley, Western Australia’s remote northernmost region defined by rugged coastlines, incredible gorges and waterfalls, and an ethereal savanna. Spanning the entire northwest corner of Western Australia, the Kimberley is three times the size of England yet home to barely 25,000 people— mostly indigenous Australians. Trek the coastline or traverse the heart of this ancient landscape via a guided 4x4 ATV excursion. In Western Australia’s capital city, Perth, take a 25 minute boat ride to Rottnest Island, where top dive sites are located near a capital city—a rarity. Snorkel and dive in secluded coves across the island, and if surfing gets you revved, discover some of Australia’s most coveted breaks. On the other coast of Australia, Dwarf Minke whales congregate each June and July at the Great Barrier Reef. Take a live-aboard dive boat or a day trip from Cairns and snorkel on drift lines with the world’s most gregarious ocean creature (and one that was only discovered in the mid-1980s).

If you’re shorter on time, fly from Brisbane or the Gold Coast to the southern Great Barrier Reef and Lady Elliot Island. Spend the day swimming with manta rays, sea turtles, and hundreds of species of fish over the reef’s mesmerizing coral. Here, you’ll find why the Great Barrier Reef is such a cherished part of the earth and how conservationists are working tirelessly to protect it. Considered the most scenic 185-mile stretch of terra firma on the globe, the “Great Walks” of Tasmania include many stunning routes, several of which snake along an unforgettable coastline. Accessible only by ferry, take a day trip to the mountainous Maria Island. Where to stay while adventuring in Tasmania? The Bay of Fires Lodge is perched in the hilltops and overlooks Australia’s most unique flora and fauna, while Cradle Mountain Lodge is located on the edge of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, an iconic wilderness region that begs for exploration. Charter a yacht and sail the 74 islands of the Whitsundays, one of the world’s most alluring—and safest—yachting destinations. All but six islands are uninhabited, offering hundreds of deserted anchorages. Stop at the famous Whitehaven Beach, a four-mile stretch of sand only accessible by boat, seaplane, or helicopter from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island. Hugged by turquoise waters, this part of Queensland ensures Instagram envy. SOLE SOUL to

Long regarded as a posh honeymoon hideaway, the South Pacific’s tropical island-nation of Fiji is also a playful family favorite. BY CL ARA WOODBRIDGE

IT DIDN’T TAKE LONG TO REALIZE I WAS OVERDRESSED. I HAD ONLY JUST ARRIVED AT NANUKU AUBERGE RESORT WHEN A GIANT COCONUT PIERCED WITH A BRIGHT PINK PAPER STRAW WAS THRUST INTO MY HAND, AND I WAS USHERED TO THE POOL.

Opposite: Scuba diving with brilliant anemones and corals; family quality time at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa; Nanuku Auberge, a 21-villa retreat on Viti Levu; a local drummer at Nanuku resort.

68

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

A quartet of Fijian men dressed in swaying grass skirts surrounded me. Suddenly, my linen buttondown shirt seemed entirely too formal. I was even wearing shoes—an island faux pas of the highest order, no doubt. Still, my new companions were ebullient (as I would eventually discover all Fijians seem to be), singing and clapping, with wide grins stretching ear to ear. I couldn’t help but meet their enthusiasm, kicking off my shoes and slapping my free hand against the behemoth coconut whose water was a sweet relief from the tropical sun above. It would be several days before I’d put my shoes back on. They’re hardly necessary when you’re sailing through mangroves on a traditional bilibili bamboo raft in search of fresh crabs. They’re totally optional while preparing fresh kokoda—Fiji’s signature ceviche dish made of raw fish marinated in lime, with coconut cream and peppers—in a warrior cooking class. And they’re downright verboten when snorkeling through the crystalline waters just off the resort’s beach. To be sure, I had come to Fiji expecting a significantly less adventurous experience. In the past, a trip to this legendary South Pacific island-

nation meant little more than sipping cocktails on the beach—a diversion largely left to honeymooners and couples. But, lately, resorts like Nanuku—a 21-villa retreat located on the main island of Viti Levu—have expanded their offerings to lure not just romancing twosomes, but the entire family, to their idyllic shores.

ISLAND LIFE: CULTURE + CUISINE

At Nanuku Auberge, that means more than the typical kid’s club. Engaging with local communities and exploring the tropical terrain are immersive experiences that span all ages. The resort’s Cakava Creative Workshop offers cultural classes where guests learn traditional Lali drumming, Meke dancing, grass-skirt weaving, and tapa printing. Just off the beach’s golden sands, opportunities to explore the Beqa Lagoon include stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, sailing, and kayaking. There’s even a host of adventures for intrepid families, from spearfishing with a local fisherman to overnight safaris on a private island. The accommodations at Nanuku are also made with families in mind. Designed like private homes, each of the 18 beachfront villas includes a living room, a full kitchen, and a welcoming private pool (literally—stones arranged at the bottom of it spell out an enthusiastic “bula!” or hello). Some villas also come with home theaters. And villa managers— dedicated concierges who can book everything from sailing excursions to private dinners made by a personal chef—cater to each family to ensure that every activity is seamlessly planned.

BLISSFUL BLENDING: YOUR POOL, MY POOL, OUR EXPERIENCE

Perhaps the most vital element to ensuring a successful family resort, however, is the ability to preserve the experiences that aren’t for everyone. At the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, that means a combination of adult-only and familyfriendly experiences, all seamlessly orchestrated throughout the 35-acre property. Adult zones, including the spa and some pools, ensure tranquil moments for those who desire them; kid-friendly

zones are ample, too, with dedicated pools, clubs, group sports, and excursions. Then there are the opportunities to blend everyone together: The championship golf course offers family tee times on various days, and even the finedining Navo restaurant accommodates children with early dinner reservations for families.

SIX SENSES FIJI—a new resort that opened in April on Malolo Island, set within the Mamanuca Islands archipelago— has mastered this art of “blending” in a host of innovative ways. The property’s spectacular private estates are the ultimate accommodations for families to commune in paradise: With up to five bedrooms and a full kitchen, each of the estates comes with its own private pool, deck, and beachfront. Culture nights offer a combination of kid-focused experiences (including performances by Fijian warriors and maidens) and adult after-hours entertainment (kava ceremonies). Six Senses’ emphasis on health and sustainability has also been extended to the family offerings, with a pizzeria featuring cooking classes that use herbs from the on-site garden; workshops that teach guests about the local ecosystems and marine life; and, come evening, movies under the stars. Six Senses’ Fiji property is indeed a striking departure for the wellness brand. With resorts Opposite, from in places like the Seychelles, Singapore, and top left: A birdsthe Portuguese wine country, the holistic hotel eye view of the chain is best known for its extensive spa retreats InterContinental Fiji Resort & Spa; a and healthful cuisine. AFTER A WEEK AT FIJI’S BEST RESORTS, MY BARE FEET HAD EXPERIENCED MORE THAN THEIR FAIR SHARE OF ADVENTURES FOR EVERY AGE. I had tried my hand (or rather, feet) at surfing with the TropicSurf experts at Six Senses. I had sunk my toes into golden sands, soft green grass, sapphire lagoons, and sparkling pools. And my arches had been blissfully kneaded and rubbed by the therapists at the InterContinental’s nine-treatment-room spa. But it was my final night at Nanuku—when the warriors of nearby Beqa Island arrived—that gave my soles their greatest taste of Fiji. Just as the sun crept below the horizon, a crowd assembled around a pile of rocks covered with broad leaves. It looked innocuous enough—until I spotted the bright orange embers glowing just underneath: These were the legendary hot white stones of the Beqa Island fire walkers. Four large men in traditional grass skirts surrounded the stones, and one by one, after stoking the fire with their long spears and performing a loud and guttural howling chant, walked—slowly, casually, and completely barefoot—over the scorching pile. I couldn’t help but wonder: Was this a mere performance? Or was the legend of these warriors, blessed by birth with the ability to withstand the heat against their flesh, real? After the crowd disassembled and the stones were left in the dark, I tiptoed back to the site, removed the broad leaves once again, and leapt from rock to rock. The heat was searing— the pain was real. And with that, my feet had seen and done it all in this land of tropical bliss. It was finally time to put my shoes back on.

Senses Fiji.

It Takes Two Fiji’s romantic resorts are still among the world’s most captivating. Here, four adult-only escapes for a secluded sojourn—sans the fam. LIKULIKU LAGOON RESORT

NAMALE RESORT & SPA

Set on Malolo Island, not far from the Six Senses, Likuliku is legendary for its overwater bungalows (a rarity in these parts). For the ultimate couple’s retreat, book one of the resort’s 10 stilted bures, and tell your butler to keep the Champagne coming. For more privacy, book a day alone on nearby Mociu, an uninhabited island with a heavenly crescent-shaped white-sand beach.

A favorite of celebrities, this five-star resort set on 520 acres of the northern island of Vanua Levu is an A-list escape with luxurious villas, an expansive spa, and farm-fresh Fijian cuisine. Divers take note: Namale is close to world-class sites including Rainbow Reef and the Namena Marine Preserve.

MATANGI PRIVATE ISLAND RESORT

This northern island feels completely off the grid with rustic-chic villas surrounded by a lush tropical forest and empty private beaches at every turn. Don’t miss the Jungle Spa, where therapists perform warm seashell massages and Fijian coconut body wraps to the sounds of swaying palms and chirping birds.

Nothing says romance like a private island, and Matangi— which occupies a 240-acre island in the lush northern Vanua Levu Group—is one of Fiji’s originals. Of the 12 villas scattered across the island, stay at the treehouse bures, which are nestled into a hillside for total privacy and panoramic views.

VIVA

MÉXICO!

Ignacio Maza’s insider guide to Mexico City celebrates an urban escape that is buzzing with cultural front-runners and plenty of posh retreats.

74

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

f Mexico City has been on your travel radar, you’re onto something. As a must-see of the Americas, this enormous and sophisticated urban hub will expand most any traveler’s horizons. Herewith, insider advice to a city defined by history, fine dining, shopping, and the arts.

DON’T MISS

To best understand Mexico City, start at the Zócalo, or Constitution Square, located in the heart of the downtown historic district. Visit the National Palace, home to Mexico’s Presidential offices and witness beautiful murals by Diego Rivera, one of Mexico’s premier 20th-century artists. Other major downtown sites include the enormous Metropolitan Cathedral, built in the 1500s, and Templo Mayor, a massive Aztec temple discovered in the 1970s. The historic district is currently experiencing a renaissance, with new shops, restaurants, and the hip Downtown Mexico—a Design Hotel that celebrates its historic architecture. Plan to spend a morning exploring the Castillo de Chapultepec, found within the city’s largest park of the same name.

ARTS + CULTURE

With more than 100 museums in Mexico City, culture buffs will find plenty of inspiration. In my opinion, the best (and largest) is the Museo Nacional de Antropología, which houses ancient archaeological treasures from Mexico’s varied pre-Columbian cultures. Marvel at the famous Aztec Sunstone, a masterpiece of native American art, as well as the sarcophagus and treasures of Lord Pacal, buried in a Mayan pyramid in Palenque and discovered in the 1950s. It’s every bit as impressive as Tutankhamun’s tomb in ancient Egypt. Additionally, the ultra-modern Museo Soumaya debuted in 2011 and houses more than 60,000 works of art— definitely worth a half- or full-day visit. Frida Kahlo fans should visit Coyoacán and her former home, named Casa Azul, or Blue House. Now a museum, it’s near the studio of her husband and artist Diego

Rivera. Another museum highlight is the Museo de Dolores Olmedo, which features Diego Rivera masterpieces. Design enthusiasts must see the master works of Luis Barragán, Mexico’s most revered 20th-century architect and the first Latin American to win the coveted Pritzker Prize, the highest honor in architecture. To truly appreciate his work, visit his home, Casa Studio (by appointment only).

TASTE OF MEXICO

Mexico City’s vibrant and sophisticated dining scene will satisfy discerning gourmands. Topping an impressive list of award-winning restaurants are Pujol and Quintonil, both named to The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. They serve new Mexican cuisine and are always packed, so advance reservations are a must. Taberna del León is one of the most enticing seafood restaurants, and for travelers seeking traditional Mexican menus, try Azul Histórico (downtown), or Hosteria de Santo Domingo, one of Mexico City’s oldest restaurants. The finest margaritas and mariachis are found at Villa Maria restaurant, and Limosneros is where preHispanic dishes meet modern Mexican cuisine.

76

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

MARKET WATCH

No visit to Mexico City is complete without strolling through the city’s local markets. Gourmands flock to the San Juan Market, open seven days a week and known for such exotic meats as venison, crocodile, and wild boar (top city chefs shop here). For antiques and art, visit El Bazar Sábado, and if on the search for unique Mexican crafts, try Mercado Artesanal La Ciudadela.

ROAD TRIP

Venture to Teotihuacán, which is well worth the hour drive. Built 2,000 years ago and the Western Hemisphere’s largest archaeological site, Teotihuacán is enormous, spanning more than 100 square miles. Climb the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon and wander around the courtyards and temples. Day trips to Cuernavaca (one hour from Mexico City) and Taxco (about three hours) also never disappoint. Taxco is a charming small village known for its jewelry making, and Cuernavaca’s city center features the 16th-century Palace of Cortés, former home of the aforementioned Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés.

AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES

Opt for a sunrise balloon ride over the ruins of Teotihuacán followed by breakfast and traditional mariachi music, or take a helicopter expedition to Guanajuato’s best vineyard. Visit top museums and archaeological sites after hours with an expert guide or enjoy a private dinner at the Frida Kahlo Museum’s garden (simply unforgettable!).

WHERE TO STAY

The St. Regis Mexico City is located on Paseo de la Reforma and features spacious, well-appointed rooms, as well as a rooftop pool and spa, with great views of the city. Las Alcobas, a Luxury Collection Hotel, is intimate, with just 35 rooms and suites. The ambiance is cozy, understated, and residential, and the property is located on Masaryk Street—Mexico City’s Madison Avenue. If seeking a younger, vibrant design hotel, I recommend W Mexico City. A 10-minute walk from Las Alcobas in the Polanco district, it features cuisine by celebrity chef José Andrés. Two other centrally located and superbly managed properties are the Hyatt Regency Mexico City or the Presidente InterContinental Hotel. If a chic apartment is more your style, consider Siqueiros Dream, the former home of Mexican artist David Siqueiros.

Ignacio’s Stats+Tips >Built by the Aztecs 700 years ago, Mexico City was originally located on an island over the former Lake Texcoco. Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés arrived in 1519 and evolved the city into a vast empire— which at one point stretched all the way to what’s now Washington state. Over the centuries, the lake waters were drained, city borders were redefined, and eventually it became today’s modern megalopolis. >Plan your Mexico City over a weekend, when the traffic is lighter and hotel rates are 30 percent lower than during the week.

>Mexico City is located on a high flat valley at nearly 7,300 feet over sea level. Adjust to the altitude with lots of water. Enjoy your main meal at lunch, with a light supper in the evening, and avoid or minimize alcohol. >With a population of over 21 million, Mexico City is one of the largest metropolitan areas and one of the 10 largest cities in the world. Work with your travel advisor to plan ahead on an itinerary that decreases decision fatigue, as there’s so much to see.

Does Mexico City top your travel wish list? This urban mecca is one of the most unforgettable cities of the Americas. Visit the website on the back cover, enter OFFER M18176, and discover the keys to the city.
